A TRIBUTE TO OUR BELOVED ADVISOR: THE LATE DR. AMR ASSAAD (1961 - 2021)

2022 Festival Catalogue

filmmydesign.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Amr Assaad, who was our advisor since Film My Design was born in 2017. Complemented by a plethora of research and journalism years, Dr. Assaad nurtured his passion for the arts in a myriad of ways that enabled him to expand his ever-growing ardor for the creative scene. He was highly accomplished in his line of work: through creating paintings and video art directly, project managing art events (including film productions and festivals where he both exhibited and curated), and providing consulting and management support to art institutions throughout the Arab Region and in the West. He continued to teach and nurture post-graduate students’ passion for arts with the introduction of new product concepts and advertising. Dr. Assaad had a sensitive and warm approach to people and took a personal and keen interest in his students’ welfare and work. His generous commitment, humility, selflessness and mentorship will continue to help and inspire us. With his passing, we have lost a member of the Film My Design family. We convey our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Though Dr. Assaad may have left us, his influences and guidance will live forever. Acknowledgements: As many of us continue to struggle with the sobering effects of a worldwide pandemic, with profound losses in health, community, and opportunity, we find ourselves looking for ways to remain strong, hopeful, and purposeful. The field of design has always allowed us to imagine a future beyond our struggles and limitations. Maintaining a strong connection to design will pave the way for the process of rebuilding and recovery from our current state. After 2 years in the making with keen observations and reflections, we are delighted to finally present the 2nd edition of the Film My Design (FMD) festival in 2022, bridging the worlds of design and film. Through a diverse series of film screenings and conversations around furniture, installation, food and landscape design as well as architecture, crafts and urban life, the FMD 2022 program will convey creativity’s ability in bringing about promise, purpose and change. You’ll find that the most groundbreaking innovations are often born out of disarray. Is this the case with design and film? Let’s find out together! There are many individuals and entities whose generous support was essential to the realization of the 2nd edition of the FMD festival. Our sincere and special thanks go to our sponsors that have supported the festival significantly. Our heartfelt appreciation also goes to our advisors Dr. Amr Assaad, media design professor, and Nedal Badr, founder of Nedalzone, whose continuous input and support are greatly valued. Finally, our appreciation and thanks go to FMD’s community and media partners, and contributors of designers and filmmakers for their collaboration and full dedication towards the 2022 program. Sincerely, FMD Cofounders

AMAL

4’

In times of loss, some turn to art for comfort while others create art to express their grief. In Amal’s case, art and music were what helped her process her mother’s loss after she had fallen ill. Through art and music, she began to see the light that she thought was forever dimmed and was fueled by creating mosaics that depict inspiring singers and performers. Amal turned her mother’s expired medication into a newfound passion and form of expression. “It took me months to even grasp the idea. I cannot say I am truly over it, but I am trying to cope as much as I can. I am learning.”

FRACTAL

Document

‘21

Within Fractal, in mathematics, you’ll find a never-ending pattern. Take, for example, the trunk of a tree – the way it diverges into smaller branches and twigs – is an approximate fractal pattern. The design thinking process is similar in the sense that it is a journey; one that diverts into every dimension, time and scale. It is a haphazard sequence of series of memories and experiences that are recalled to inspire the designer into developing an original masterpiece. As architects, we are programmed to examine everything we see or touch incessantly. However, in doing so, we forget to learn how to deal with mistakes and failures. In our field, we’re faced with these failures in the form of uncompleted projects everyday. While they deeply affect us, it is a fight we undertake everyday knowing there’s no room for losing. Luckily, as we search for inspiration, all that’s needed is to behold God’s creations and the wonder of nature, as nature’s beauty is unparalleled. For us, Design is Fractal.

MARMAR

12’

Translucency does not mean invisibility, but rather semi-transparency. Marmar is a white translucent stone that is not alabaster nor is it marble; it’s a stone native to caves known as onyx-marble. Marmar is found in Luxor, deep in the desert’s mountains. While its extraction and transportation are strenuous tasks, our entrepreneur, who appears in the film, tries to be present for both. A native Luxorian himself, Alaa knows the desert and Marmar by heart, and through his institution Habu Arts, his wish is that so will everyone else. As white isn’t a colour but all colours, so is Marmar. And what is white light but all light? From the golden dunes of the Luxor desert to the pale white cast of the stone itself, Marmar’s fusion of light, colours and textures tells a tale of beauty in the contrasts.

THE REMINISCENCE OF PORT-SAID

Create

5’

Port-Said has always been famous for its unique architectural and cultural heritage, which continues to impact and shape its people to this day. The main character and narrator of the film is Mohamed Ghali, a Semsemya maker. Semsemya is a traditional Port-Saidian musical instrument, whose music plays an integral role in Port Said’s cultural heritage. Throughout the film, we see the city through Ghali’s eyes and come to understand his motive to preserve Port Said’s identity by introducing younger generations to the musical instrument. The second character is Mohamed Abd El Qader, a poet from PortSaid. His voice is heard at the opening scene of the film reciting a piece of his poetry, in which he is reminiscing about Port-Said and the citizen’s relationship with the city.

Everyone deserves their own image – that’s the essence of an old Egyptian pop song. In reality, there used to be only one official image along the Nile for a long time – that of a strong and powerful Egypt, embodied by its rulers. However, the majority of the population had no place in it. The film takes a step back to look at the structures of the old power, revealing tableau-like shots taken on an insider’s tour of the apparatus of power – the oldest and most important national daily, Al-Ahram, in which official Egypt reshaped itself since Nasser’s day. Starting with the conference rooms, down to the basement garages, where the papers are bundled for delivery, we meet a multitude of employees doing their various jobs, while a narrator’s voice recites a firsthand account of Egyptian media history.

While Garden City is a small neighborhood in Cairo, it has been at the grandstand of Egypt’s political powers since the turn of the 19th century. The film takes us on a journey through abandoned villas, luxurious salons, foreign embassies, threatened businesses and rooftop living rooms. Houses become witnesses as they make flesh of history’s turmoil. While the residents departed, their memories live on by telling a story of patience, faith and hope. For a moment, a glimpse of truth can be seen – far from political correctness and all stereotypes. An allegory of contemporary Egypt, the film challenges us to reflect on the obsessions of our world today.

The film pays tribute to the notable career of the late famous Egyptian artist and designer, Nagy Shaker (1932-2018). Shaker was known mostly for his costume design and puppets-making in the musical spectacle “El-Leila El-Kebira” (The Big Night). Over the course of the past five decades, he encompassed all sectors of the visual art scene: cinema, painting, graphic works, sculpture, and interior and architectural design. In 2015, he was awarded the State Appreciation Award by Egypt’s Supreme Council for Culture for his lifelong achievement. The film includes an interview with Shaker himself in which he speaks ever so modestly about his experience as an experimental artist, production designer and filmmaker.

If you’ve ever asked yourself what it took for women to be prominent pioneers during the 20th century, these four renowned trailblazers ought to have all your answers: Phyllis Lambert, Blanche Lemco van Ginkel, Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, and Denise Scott Brown. Throughout their years of mentoring and inspiring generations of professionals, each has an extensive list of accomplishments in architecture, planning and landscape architecture dating back 60+ years. How have they envisioned our cities? Documentary filmmaker Joseph Hillel uncovers how each of these strong, independent thinkers has shaped the cities we live and work in. As the world becomes increasingly urbanized, the insights of these progressive women, who have built social and environmental values into their work, are more relevant now than ever. Supported by:

DILLER SCOFIDIO + RENFRO: REIMAGINING LINCOLN CENTER AND THE HIGH LINE

Create

2022 Festival Catalogue

ENGLISH

Founded in 1979, Diller Scofidio + Renfro first stirred interest with its unorthodox exhibitions that blurred the boundaries between art and architecture. With the revamping of both the High Line and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, the interdisciplinary design firm had galvanized the public’s attention. Between 2004 and 2011, DS+R, in collaboration with James Corner Field Operations, converted the derelict High Line into a sophisticated 1.5 mile elevated urban park. From 2003 to 2010, the firm redesigned Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall and The Juilliard School, and built a free-standing, grass-covered pavilion, inventively modifying the public spaces connecting the complex’s existing buildings. As the architecture critic Martin Filler states in the film, “Both the High Line and Lincoln Center have had a really euphoric effect on life in New York. So it’s populism of a very high order.” Supported by:

From 1941 to 1978, the husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames brought unique talents to their partnership. He was an architect by training, while she was a painter and sculptor. Together, they are considered America’s most distinguished and influential designers. Their work paved the way to shaping the second half of the 20th century and remains culturally vital and commercially popular until today. Eames: The Architect and the Painter is the first film to be made about Charles and Ray since their deaths, and the only one that peers deeply inside the link between their artistic collaboration as well as their occasional tortured love for one another. Despite their unrivaled impact on American design, the personas of the steadfastly private Eames have remained mysterious beyond the giddy publicity photos they doled out to inquiring journalists while they were alive. Piet Oudolf, the most influential garden designer in a generation, has radically redefined what gardens can be, moving them well into the realm of art. Five Seasons is an immersive documentary that gives its viewers a rare and rather poetic outlook on the creative process of this revolutionary figure. The mesmerizing film includes intimate discussions throughout all four seasons in Oudolf’s own private garden and on visits to his signature public works in New York, Chicago, and the Netherlands. He found inspiration from locations as far-flung as desert wildflowers in West Texas and post-industrial forests in Pennsylvania. Rams is a documentary that filmmaker Gary Hustwit directed as a tribute to the legendary designer Dieter Rams. For over fifty years, Rams has left an indelible mark on the field of product design with his iconic work at Braun and Vitsoe, and his influence on Apple. However, one might ask, why does he now regret being a designer at the age of 86? Rams is a design documentary, but it’s also a rumination on consumerism, materialism and sustainability. Dieter’s philosophy is about more than just design; it’s about a way to live. The film also features an original score by the pioneering musician, Brian Eno.

VISUAL ACOUSTICS: THE MODERNISM OF JULIUS SHULMAN

Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, Visual Acoustics celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, acclaimed by many as “the world’s most influential architectural photographer.” Shulman’s images embody the energy and optimism of Southern California in the second half of the 20th century, bringing its iconic architecture to the attention of an international audience. His photographs immortalize the work of the most prominent American modern architects from the 1930s until Shulman’s death in 2009, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, and Frank Gehry. Ten years after the passing of his wife and partner, Jeanne-Claude, Christo sets out to realize The Floating Piers – a project they conceived together many years before. Walking on Water is a cinema vérité look into Christo’s process, from inception to completion of his latest large-scale art installation. The film takes the viewer on an intimate journey into Christo’s world, unmediated by interviews, voice overs or reenactments, while drawing the portrait of a man who deliberately places visceral experience over demagogy. Yet, this intimate portrait of a man chasing a dream happens on the backdrop of the epic madness of it all: the complex dealings that merge between art and state politics, engineering challenges, logistical nightmares, and the sheer force of nature. This is the story of a family’s intertwined stories and how their first artistic carpentry studio, which opened in 1860, has turned into an international company – Lualdi – the protagonist of Italian design known for its doors and partition systems. In the 60’s, Lualdi experimented with and made doors and windows for the uppermiddle-class families of Milan. From the heart of the company in the 80’s, Milan, Lualdi opened up to the world to initiate a continuous internationalization process, thanks to architects Carl Magnusson, design director of Knoll, and Emanuela Frattini. LOVING GIO PONTI

Document

’15

ENGLISH/ITALIAN

This is a picture of the man and the architect, an aspiring painter and a promoter of Italian design. In more than 50 years of activity with vigorous energy, he has tried it all: arts, occupations, objects, architecture and material – from as small as the design of a handle to as big as the formulation of a town plan. “Architecture is an interpretation of life”, he used to write. A popularizer of modern art, and the one who risked indifference and being completely forgotten. The film seeks to enquire into the reasons for this diffidence; apart from stereotypes and the masses who “soon relegated him to a divine Olympus of underestimated fathers,” as described by Fulvio Irace. Why, paraphrasing Ponti, who used to say “art has fallen in love with industry”, has the industry of yesterday and today fallen in love with Gio Ponti?

Revisiting the genre of the road movie in a very diaristic manner, Tokyo Ride takes us along for a ride on Ryue Nishizawa’s vintage Alfa Romeo for a day, wandering in the streets of Tokyo. More than a portrait, in the classical sense, of one of the most talented and celebrated Japanese architects of today, the film renders in its pure spontaneity the experience of this friendly urban drift. Nishizawa narrates along the way his strong relationship with his hometown through some sites he personally affectionates, buildings that have influenced him, and some of his own architecture projects. The film questions how deep-rooted the architecture practice is and how much the built and cultural environment feeds and shapes our imagination. Supported by:

Temporality and age are inherent in every object and creature and, depending on one’s outlook, may transcend to infinity. How can this be imagined? What lies beyond it? Director Christoph Schaub starts his personal journey through time and space in his childhood when his fascination with sacred buildings began and his wonder at beginnings and ends. Schaub explores, together with the architects Peter Zumthor, Peter Märkli and Álvaro Siza Vieira, the artists James Turrell and Cristina Iglesias and drummer virtuoso Jojo Mayer, the magic of sacred spaces. These spaces are defined here as far more than church buildings. Who owns spirituality? The film follows “spiritual life” in architecture, fine arts as well as nature, liberating its audience of any limits of thought.

The film leads its audience through a ‘sea of chairs’. Revealed are 125 objects, dating as far back as 1807 to the latest 3D printed designs, arranged in the order of their production years and forming a timeline of modern seating design in the Vitra Schaudepot. Serving as a guide on this journey into the past of seating design is Rolf Fehlbaum, Chairman Emeritus of Vitra. However, which objects do you think would intrigue professionals in the design field the most? Some of the distinguished pioneers and experts know the answer: designer Hella Jongerius, the architect and collector Arthur Rüegg, architect David Chipperfield, Peter Noever as Director Emeritus of MAK Vienna/Los Angeles, and Vitra Design Museum’s director Mateo Kries, curator Amelie Klein as well as collection curator Serge Mauduit. MARIO BOTTA. THE SPACE BEYOND

78’

The documentary, directed by Loretta Dalpozzo and Michèle Volontè and produced by Swissbridge Productions, is a unique, in-depth and artistic journey into the work of internationally acclaimed Swiss Architect Mario Botta. The film deep dives into Botta’s ever-growing curiosity and reflections on the contradictions of society through his sacred spaces. Tirelessly passionate, Botta is one of the few architects who has built places of prayer for the three main monotheistic religions. After building many churches, chapels and a synagogue, he is now designing a mosque in Inner Mongolia. Through his thoughts and his interactions with artists, clients as well as family members around the world, the audience travels along with him all the way from Switzerland to Italy and from China to South Korea – catching a glimpse of the man behind the architect. Using simple and functional components, Zimoun, the Swiss artist, composer and musician, builds architecturallyminded platforms of sound. By exploring mechanical rhythm and the flow in prepared systems, his installations incorporate commonplace industrial objects. In an obsessive display of simple and functional materials, these works articulate tension between the orderly patterns of Modernism and the chaotic forces of life. The acoustic hum of natural phenomena in Zimoun’s minimalist constructions effortlessly reverberates, revealing an obscured emotional depth.

FOOD DESIGN

Document

The sound of sausage – when a bite produces a distinct crunch, it tastes particularly delicious. Fish sticks, on the other hand, don’t make such a great noise, but they can be arranged decoratively in the pan. Also, why tea biscuits must have precisely 52 notches is still not clear. Food Design shows how form, color, smell, consistency, the sounds made during eating, manufacturing technique, history and stories influence food design. Should foodstuffs be considered designer products in the same way as Armani suits, Alessi coffee cups and Ferraris? Of course! Food Design makes a case for a design discipline that has received little attention, inviting its audience to take part in a sensual journey through the wonderful world of food. Supported by:

After practicing medicine for ten years as a successful doctor, he decided to quit, dedicating his time to his lifelong passion of woodwork. PHARAOHS’ GOLDEN PARADE: THE MAKING OF On April 3rd, 2021, Egypt hosted one of the most memorable processions in history — The Pharaohs’ Golden Parade. The event witnessed the relocation of 22 mummies belonging to Kings and Queens of Ancient Egypt from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo’s Tahrir Square to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat. During the relocation, the mummies were placed in special nitrogen-filled containers to help protect them against external conditions and carried on boat-like vehicles, fitted with special shock-absorbers, that emulated the vessels used to convey ancient Egyptian pharaohs to their tombs. Accompanying the mummies were 60 motorcycles, 150 horses and hundreds of performers wearing pharaonic costumes. This spectacle marked the culmination of months of preparation and promotion. Some of the creative key players behind the parade will talk about their various roles and contributions from branding, production and costume design to cinematography and lighting design.

STORYTELLING IN ARCHITECTURE: A SPATIAL NARRATIVE Exceptional architecture is one that reels its audience in to tell a story. The materials chosen, the technology used to build, the transition from one space to another, the play of light and shadow, the relationship between the architecture and its surroundings, decoding the concept and the messages whilst moving between spaces – all these elements combined, convey a story, a concept, that the architect wants us to decode. For the past two years, GLC invited architects and designers to interpret their vision of its color trends, giving them total freedom to design whatever volume they saw fit. Each of these pavilions had a story. On this panel, we are looking forward to discussing the vision of these architects and listening to their narrative.

EGYPTIAN COSTUME HISTORY: 7000 YEARS OF CHANGING FASHIONS AND IDENTITIES A year ago, Yasmine El Dorghamy embarked on an odyssey to investigate the history of Egyptian costume for Rawi Magazine’s latest encyclopaedic edition. The undertaking was much more challenging than she expected and soon turned into a much bigger project dubbed The Egyptian Fashion History Project. One of the stumbling blocks was that almost everything on Egyptian costume history is limited to the ancient Egyptian era, and there is little visual evidence on dress for over 1000 years following the Byzantine Era. In particular, there is almost nothing left of the lavish costumes of the Mamluks who were famous for their extravagance and luxurious fabrics. In spite of this, with the help of textile and costume history scholars and collectors from Egypt and around the world together with illustrators and artists, she was able to piece together a fascinating picture of Egypt’s evolving fashions, influences, and identities over its entire 7000-year history.

EGYPTIAN FILM POSTERS: A DESIGN REFERENCE Since 1927, the visual exposure to the film-poster industry in Egypt created a new reference for design in the Arab world. This linked design in Egypt to its history, politics, and popular culture. With their vibrant graphics, famous cultural elements, and social reflection, film posters are of great relevance to the Arab world and are considered treasured reflections of the past. The film industry changed the visual culture of Egypt completely, particularly in Downtown Cairo, where cinemas and theaters were prevalent. This emerging visual culture invaded the Arab world, and Egyptian films captured the imagination of Arab audiences all around the world. Cinema became a strong vehicle for expressing political agendas and for reflecting the social, cultural, and economic status of Egypt. People were observing new ways of illustrating images and writing Arabic script. The posters were witnesses to the evolution of different illustration styles that advertised the new faces of heroes and heroines that would appear on the silver screen.
