After one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history burned over 50,000 acres of Los Angeles County, immigrants are already cleaning up.
After one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history burned over 50,000 acres of Los Angeles County, immigrants are already cleaning up.
With 28 known deaths, up to $275 billion in estimated damages, nearly 17,000 structures destroyed and over 150,000 people who have had to evacuate or lost their homes, quick recovery will be crucial for the future of the city and the economy at large.
But amid deportation threats under the new presidential administration, the construction industry faces massive labor shortages in LA County and nationwide.
After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, President George W. Bush paused employer sanctions for undocumented immigrants. In 2025, business leaders in industries already facing a dearth of workers have called on the incoming administration’s promises to deport as many as 10 million migrants.
‘These threats are real’
“The need for cleanup and rebuilding is immediate,” said Nik Theodore, professor of urban planning and policy at the University of Illinois Chicago, at a Friday, January 24 Ethnic Media Services briefng on the LA fres and deportation threats. “We’re seeing ash with lead and other toxins
being leached into the earth, going into the groundwater and the air.”
“Unfortunately, this urgency creates opportunities for worker exploitation,” continued Theodore, who has been researching with the National Day Laborers Organizing Network (NDLON) for nearly 25 years. “In
all urban disaster recovery zones we’ve studied, we’ve seen unlicensed contractors, often coming from out of state, who tend to hire local day laborers and other immigrant workers to assemble work crews rapidly.”
“Even in the best of times, in industries where many immigrants
St. Michael’s Parish Hall Reunion of Filipino Priests, Diocese of San Diego
work, like construction, government enforcement of labor standards has never been what it needs to be to safeguard workers,” he added.
These standards are often unmet by inadequate provision of personal protective equipment and wage theft, which undocumented workers fear
contesting due to deportation threats — especially now.
Nationwide, roughly 30% of construction industry workers are immigrants; in states like California and Texas, the share is 40%.
Last year, the industry’s workforce shortage topped half a million workers
needed nationwide.
“We’ll have to depend on immigrants to rebuild from this disaster. But folks are going to be too afraid to show up for these jobs,” said Jennie Murray, president and CEO of the National Immigration Forum (NIM). The 2028 Olympics, which LA is still slated to host, “is right on the heels of this. The industry would have to be growing robustly even if it weren’t for the fres.”
A Department of Homeland Security memo released Thursday also allows immigration enforcement agents to quickly deport migrants who came to the U.S. under Biden parole programs; this puts 1.5 million migrants at risk, mostly from Haiti, Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.
“When we see more overreach and start to see folks being prioritized who are contributing, not violent criminals, not eligible for deportation, I think we’ll start to see American voters say ‘This is not what I signed up for. This was not a blank check,’” added Murray.
A nationwide poll of 1,200 adults nationwide, released by NIM and The Bullfnch Group, found that 60% of Republicans and 67% of voters overall said immigration enforcement should prioritize violent criminals and those with fnal orders of removal rather than “all individuals without legal status.”
CCDPH is providing waivers, adding flexibility, and expanding support for those impacted by wildfires
What You Need to Know: The California Department of Public Health is expanding ways in which Californians can receive help and support as Southern California continues to battle wildfres and begin to recover.
SACRAMENTO, CA -- In the wake of the devastating fres in Southern California and as part of Governor Gavin Newsom’s proclaimed State of Emergency (PDF) and Executive Order (PDF), the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is taking steps to support and make things easier for Californians as recovery continues across the region. These efforts span the department’s many public health programs and include issuing widespread approval for expanded response, eliminating or limiting fees and processes, expanding areas of coverage, and more.
“Across our entire department, our teams are working toward the shared goal of supporting Californians impacted by these wildfres and easing their pain in whatever ways possible,” said CDPH Director and State Public Health Offcer, Dr. Tomás Aragón. “Public health isn’t just about supporting physical health, but also mental health, document recovery, food supply, logistics, recovery safety, and other essential needs."
CDPH understands that recovering from these wildfres will be challenging and has developed a single online space for wildfre response information: go.cdph.ca.gov/wildfres Supporting Expanded Capacity at Health Care Facilities • CDPH, which oversees
hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and more care access points across the state, has coordinated with local public health and emergency response teams to facilitate and ensure proper transfer of individuals in health care facilities to safe and secure locations. More than 130 long-term care residents have been transferred to safety and CDPH continues to work with 120 facilities across the region to assess additional capacity and other facility needs.
• This approval allows for more rapid and expanded coverage and an increased ability to serve residents and patients that have been evacuated.
• CDPH is providing guidance through All Facilities Letters for these facilities on how to submit additional waiver requests. These waivers are designed to support all facilities experiencing fre and windstorm related surges in capacity, as well as those dealing with staffng shortages due to impacted personnel. • CDPH issued blanket approval for these facilities in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties to quickly add bed capacity and services to their licenses. The blanket approval also allows facilities to set up additional beds in areas not traditionally used for patient rooms.

Happy Valentine’s Day Next Week, my pampered friends! May you give and receive love in great abundance. You deserve it!
This week, I share with you This words of love that have stood the test of time. These professions of passion and commitment continue to make hearts melt to this day.
May these famous love letters serve as inspirations for you to write one of your own this Valentine’s Day!
“Pamper yourself or someone you love with a famous love letter.”
If you haven’t noticed the red and pink store displays trying their best to remind you…Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, my pampered friends.
Sure, we could debate regarding the commercial nature of this “holiday.” Instead, let’s embrace the good excuse to show our affection to those who are important in our lives!
Walking down aisles of sugary confections and mass-produced cards this weekend, I wondered, “Does anyone write their own love letters anymore?”
Not everyone considers writing
their forte. The mere thought of putting feelings into words makes some people nauseous. Plus, the extra gushy love letters of folks whose affection you do not reciprocate can be equally nauseating as it is flattering, too, right? With that said…a well thought out personal message meant to commemorate a relationship can be one of the most beautiful gifts anyone may be lucky enough to receive.
On embedded dried flower stationery or on a Post-it…written in dipped feather calligraphy or written in block handwriting… sealed with ring-pressed wax or sealed with a kiss…a really good love letter knows no particular length or recipe. A really effective letter captures the all-consuming love between two people--a link only they two will ever fully understand and share.
Here are some sweet examples from well-known men to their lucky ladies…Soak ‘em up, and swoon away, my pampered friends…
From John Keats: “Sweetest Fanny, You fear, sometimes, I do not love you so much as you wish?
My dear Girl I love you ever and ever and without reserve.
The more I have known you the more have I lov’d. In every way – even my jealousies have been agonies of Love, in the hottest fit I ever had I would have died for you.
You are always new. The last of your kisses was ever the sweetest; the last smile the brightest; the last movement the gracefullest.
When you pass’d my window home yesterday, I was fill’d with as much admiration as if I had then seen you for the first time. Even if you did not love me I could not help an entire devotion to you: how much more deeply then must I feel for you knowing you love me.
My Mind has been the most discontented and restless one that ever was put into a body too small for it. I never felt my Mind repose upon anything with complete and undistracted enjoyment – upon no person but you.
When you are in the room my thoughts never fly out of window: you always concentrate my whole senses.”
From Voltaire: “No, nothing has the power to part me from you; our love is based upon virtue, and will last as long as our lives.
Adieu, there is nothing that I
will not brave for your sake; you deserve much more than that.
Adieu, my dear heart!”
Cheers to romance, and those brave enough to declare it! What words make YOU melt?
Remember, respect and gratitude are precious incarnations of love itself.
This Upcoming Valentine’s Day, make sure to spend some time pampering yourself as
you do the ones you love, my pampered friends! I wish you great romance and send you so much love, * Francine Maigue “The Pampered Pinay”

SAN
DIEGO,
CA -- For the most ardent of those wanting to turn their dreams into reality, the chasing doesn't end until they're living the life - one that is cinematic yet for real; one that is personal yet universally inspiring.
Sofronio Vasquez reached that high point when he won The Voice USA last December. He said he felt like he already won when he shared the stage with his coach Michael Buble whom he now considers as his second father. That thought emphasized the magnitude of his victory which inspired a whole nation and in essence everyone in Asia hoping to make it to the world stage and actually make it.
Sofronio, a unique-sounding name which Concert King Martin Nievera likened to the musical term soprano, is the frst Asian champ of the NBC singing competition which wrapped up its Season 26 with a Filipino - a native of Misamis Occidental who moved to New York in 2022 - being the last singer standing.
“I’m always inspired by people who know how to dream. My dream became a reality after so many tries so never stop,” the former Tawag Ng Tanghalan fnalist said while being interviewed on ASAP stage by the likes of Gary Valenciano and Ogie Alcasid.
The guy didn’t win on It's Showtime’s well-watched competition and no chair turned for him on The Voice Philippines. We wonder what if he had stopped and just focused on working as a dental assistant to provide for his family.
Sofronio’s victory on The Voice USA recently led him to appearing on ASAP performing with some of the biggest solo acts in the Philippines, a scenario which he described as “overwhelming.”
Last January 20, he was honored by the Philippine Senate at its Plenary Session, with Senator Joel Villanueva making a manifestation to congratulate him, saying that his journey has been “nothing short of extraordinary.”
A courtesy call to Malacanang Palace to meet the current President Bongbog Marcos and First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos stressed the fact that the 32-year old singing sensation is now a global Pinoy pride.
You may have seen that video clip showing the defnition of cool rapper Snoop Dogg circling around him like he’s some deity, acknowledging his talent and triumph, or that one where he was singing “Every Breath You Take” with Memphis native Jeremy Beloate, backed by a band that featured on bass some guy named Sting.
Sofronio, who is also happy to have headlined a show at Waterfront Cebu City and taped a Family Feud Philippines guest appearance upon his “I’m back Pinas” trip, just announced on social media that he will do a show at the Bal Theatre in San Leandro, California come March 15.
While there’s no doubt the durability of Filipino resiliency is forever embedded in his bones, there’s no denying the gratitude that comes through his searing voice to refect the signifcance of him moving to America to continue eyeing for loftier goals. He calls Utica, New York as his second home and felt privileged to have sang The Star-Spangled Banner for a hockey game between Utica Comets and Rochester Americans.
One can clearly hear someone praising “great job” after he’s done singing the US national anthem.
At an event in Milwaukee in March last year, a portion of his sound check performance of the James Ingram classic “Just Once” was captured and it has been garnering thousands of views.
Small wonder that all four coaches of The Voice USA (with Gwen Stefani and Reba McEntire joining Buble and Dogg to complete the panel) wanted to work with Sofronio from the start. He has this confdent voice that charms the
and reminisced about the years she spent in London.
"A few seconds of my life in London since 2021. I am temporarily closing this chapter as I prepare to work full-time again. And yes, I should have taken more pictures. I should have kissed and hugged my loved ones as much as I needed," she wrote.
The actress then refected on her time in the European city.
"Even if London will forever be the city that made me question everything I know in life, and forced me to square my shoulders, walk faster and be more vigilant…it will also always be the city
that allowed me to smell fowers in spring and summer. And boy did I stop and smell the fowers constantly. They were the highlights of my day. On days when I forgot what I sounded like because I wasn’t talking to anybody, I had the fowers to remind me that God wanted me happy by giving me the most beautiful fowers just around my neighbourhood," she said.
The Kapamilya star went on:
"London made me embrace the sad colours of autumn so hard that it would crush my soul every time I swept my garden before winter. Always weeping for the big tree I have, dying temporarily… as did I, with every sad day, quiet room entered and moment of complete confusion."
Bela then further enumerated how London transformed her as a person.
"Because of London, my instincts
are now sharper. I stayed as healthy as I could while navigating my auto immune disorder. I very quickly learned to walk, ride my bike and eventually drive cars on the left side. The education I got from in and out of the classrooms, embedded in me now," she stated.
The actress also shared that the city opened the doors for her to meet new friends.
"London also gave me the best friends that one could develop in adulthood, abroad. Our shared love for food, pints of Guinness or ciders, homesickness, overpriced takeaway and complains about the bitter cold of winter glued me to them in ways that sometimes saved my sanity," she said.
The actress also opened up why her frst house in London would always be memorable for her.
"I had to fgure out grief alone in my high ceiling bedroom when I got the call that my dad had passed away…so my frst house in London will always be the one I hold dearest to me. The sadness ate me whole so I took a train to Scotland where, shockingly, the sun made me feel like I was in the Philippines for a few days. I will still have my house in London and maybe one day, I will call it home again," she stated.
She added: "London is polite but shouts when you’re wrong. Beautiful but rough around the edges. Kind but has a darkness that could scare the tough...my friend, London."
Back on January 2, Bela shared that she wrote a screenplay that she was looking forward to flm.
"Starting the year with a new script breaking my writers block of two years with something special that I’m about to create with friends," she announced.
Bela is also currently hosting the noontime show It's Showtime. (MNS)
ears and warms the heart. He went to Team Buble as it was obvious he is a fan of the Canadian traditional pop icon.
He won $ 100,000 and a recording contract for his feat, but more than both of these is what it brought to his run as a dream chaser. We have a long list of Filipinoborn or of Filipino-descent singers entering international contests and going deep down the competition,
but not making it all the way. He did it, and songwriter Rey Valera’s video clip telling that he noticed him often just by himself during his try at Tawag Ng Tanghalan went viral.
Sofronio is no longer alone; he is on top of the world. In interviews, he shed tears of joy or the fact that his father Oniol Vasquez, who died in 2018 and whom he considers as his frst vocal coach, couldn’t
live to see him get through the big break.
Good gracious that his mother Aida Parojinog, a lady he calls a “solid rock for everything,” has always been supportive of him. He sang for her a key line from Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings” while on ASAP, acapella.
There may have been ups and downs but Sofronio has no anger in his heart. When asked what frst comes to mind from all the words of wisdom he’s gotten from Buble, he said of the bestselling act who performed with him The Miracles’ “Who’s Lovin’ You” – “He would always tell me to be at peace everytime. You don’t have to be technically perfect. Just send love and hope.”
Proof of Sofronio being a true artist is mirrored on his plan to invest his winnings on his music career, which he noted in an interview. He pointed out that he is set to produce himself if need be and reach out to other big names in mainstream America.
“Pinangarap ko lang mapansin and I have always been rejected. Di ako nawalan ng pag-asa,” Sofronio expressed, “Mangarap po kayo.”

MANILA -- Kapamilya actor Seth Fedelin was thrilled by the success of his collaboration with onscreen partner Francine Diaz in their Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) debut flm, My Future You.
During the Star Magic Spotlight press conference, Seth shared his experience being part of the 50th edition of the local flm festival.
“Yung experience namin ni Francine sa pelikula nakakapagod pero hindi namin ramdam yung pagod kasi lahat naging worth it. Hindi namin ineexpect yung pelikula,” Seth shared. The young actor also recalled how he and Francine had been discussing their future projects for 2024 before My Future You came along.
“Bago dumating ang My Future You, lagi na kami magkausap ni Francine kung ano na yung susunod na proyekto na gagawin namin. Lagi kami magkausap kung anong gagawin namin. Maraming hindi natuloy. Naiintindihan naman namin iyon pero it doesn’t mean na mawawalan kami ng pag-asa ni Francine,” Seth admitted. Seth emphasized how the two worked hard to make a strong impression in their frst leading movie roles. “Talagang naghintay kami hanggang dumating yung My Future You. Habang nagshoshoot namin ito, sinabi talaga namin na dito kami makikita ng tao. Kahit iilan ang makanood, dito pa rin tayo makikita ng tao. Sabi namin magiging portfolio namin ito para sa karera namin,” Seth said. He further shared that they were always open to suggestions and corrections from each other throughout the process.
“Nag-brainstorm kami ng Francine. Lagi kaming magkausap palagi. Sa suggestions, open kami sa isa’t isa. Sa corrections din open kami sa isa’t isa,” he stated.
Seth praised his and Francine’s good teamwork in doing their roles in the fantasy romance flm.
“Nagwork yung team namin. Nagwork yung pagtatrabaho naming dalawa atsaka sobra niya akong tinulungan. Sobrang concern niya sa damit ko, sa itsura ko. Talagang nagtulungan kami. Hindi namin
ginawa itong pelikula dahil trabaho lang namin. Talagang isinapuso namin itong pelikula,” he added.
My Future You, produced by Regal Entertainment, was one of the offcial entries for the MMFF’s 50th edition.
This flm marked Seth and Francine’s frst time as lead actors in a movie and their frst time joining MMFF.
“Hindi ko inexpect na ang MMFF ay napakalaki. Ganito pala rito nakakalula. Ibang klase. Kung makapasok ako rito talagang hindi mo makakalimutan,” Seth described his experience.
He also shared his excitement when he learned that their flm was selected as one of the top ten entries.
“Noong inaannounce na pangMMFF kami, ayon agad yung pumasok sa isip ko na ‘Ay dadating ang kapaskuhan na pagpipiliin yung pelikula namin’,” Seth shared. Seth was also impressed by the caliber of actors he was surrounded with in the festival.
“Nagulat ako sa mga tao. Yung line up ng MMFF, lahat po ng entries yung sampung pelikula namin, ang gaganda atsaka ang gagaling po ng mga kasabayan namin na mga senior actors at mga magagaling na mga aktor at aktres, ang dami,” he continued.
The experience also allowed him to connect with other stars who shared the same mission of promoting Filipino
up
flms.
“In short period of time, naging magkaibigan, nagkakatagpo kami at isa lang yung mission namin na itulak yung bawat pelikula namin at ipakilala sa tao at buhayin muli yung pelikulang Pilipino. Ayon po talaga ang pinaka(mission) ng MMFF noong 50th anniversary,” Seth remarked.
“Hindi ko makakalimutan na naging parte ako ng 50th anniversary ng MMFF.”
Seth’s debut in the festival was extra special as he won the Breakthrough Performance Award and was nominated for Best Actor at the Gabi ng Parangal. However, receiving such recognition brought a sense of pressure for him.
“Sa totoo lang, yung nakuha kong award, sobrang napakalaking bagay at nakakatakot dahil dapat sa susunod na hindi na lang Breakthrough. Napressure po ako kasi may mga nabasa akong comments,” Seth shared.
“Natutuwa ako pero at the same time din kinakabahan ako kasi hindi naman laging best, hindi naman laging maganda yung mapapakita mo at hindi laging lahat ng tao magugustuhan mo,” he added.
With a motivation to be better actor, Seth expressed, “Kailangan sa susunod mas buhayin ko ulit ang character. Ayon yung pinaghahandaan ko.” (MNS)

MANILA -- "You defne your own success."
These were the words of Janine Gutierrez as she refected on her showbiz journey, coming from a family of accomplished artists.
In an interview with Karmina Constantino-Torres on her podcast
KC After Hours, Janine was asked if she felt pressured to achieve the same level of success as her mother, Lotlot de Leon, and grandmother, Pilita Corrales, who have established their legacy in the industry.
"No kasi imposible and that's what I had to remove from my brain din when I was starting. Kasi how can you compete with the women in my life, parang hindi talaga kaya," she said. Janine admitted that her family's legacy was one of the reasons she was initially hesitant to join showbiz.
"I guess that was one of the things din that was stopping me before from trying to enter showbiz, kasi feeling ko hala paano pa, ano pa ang mapapatunayan ko diyan. They've done everything," she recalled. Janine then realized over the years that "there's space for everyone."
She pointed out: "That's why I also hate it when they pit women against each other because everybody can be successful. There's space for everyone and just be true to your own journey. Don't compare yourself to your peers or don't put too much pressure on what other people have achieved kasi you defne your own success. And I've learned that also from my mom, and
from my grandmother, and everyone."
In the same interview, Janine was asked how she learned to embrace the ups and downs of her own journey.
"I think it's also really getting to know yourself, and I think it comes with age and experience talaga," she highlighted.
She also learned to appreciate how things happen in their own time as they should.
"And there was that part of me when I was younger na [I wondered] did I just waste my time studying?
Dapat ba 16 pa lang nag-artista na ako? But then when I got to do the things I really wanted — for example going to Venice (Film Festival) or even getting roles, or even like going to ABS-CBN — na-realize ko that there's really no experience that's wasted,” the actress went on. "And I am so happy that I really had that time din to go to school, which is a privilege not many
actors have. I am so blessed to have that part of my life before going into show business. It has really helped me talaga."
The actress shared that she also realized that everything happens for a reason. "I've learned that through many rejections, many missed opportunities. Eventually, I realized that everything gets explained or replaced with something better and everything happens for a reason and timing is everything."
Janine recently starred in the Kapamilya series Lavender Fields alongside Jericho Rosales and Jodi Sta. Maria.
"Sobrang saya na mapabilang sa cast ng ‘Lavender Fields’ kasi sobrang husay ng lahat ng artista at sobrang ganda ng kwento at nabigyan kami ng oras ng lahat ng manonood. Fulflling, kapag nagawa mo ‘yung mga bilin ng mga director and lalong mas fulflling if nagustuhan ng mga Kapamilya o ‘yung mga nanonood," she remarked in a previous interview.
Back in August 2024, Janine attended her frst Venice International Film Festival as part of Phantosmia by Lav Diaz.
"It's been a dream of mine to be part of Filipino flms that make it to the global stage. I know there's so much talent in the Philippine flm industry and there's so much potential there and I'm so happy to be with the group of people who feel the same way," Janine said during the press conference of the movie at the flm festival. SAN DIEGO, CA -- As FilipinoAmericans, we all know that we certainly love our own country, but when a foreigner loves our old homeland, we feel vey proud of being a Filipino.
I’ve been reading a lot of articles lately about the old country – I’ve seen travel writers who’ve been there, planning to go there or who dream of going there and staying for good – and I absolutely love how many writers are showing the world what an amazing place our beloved old homeland is.
So, please check out this particular edition about far-fung foreigners in our archipelago who have fallen in love with the Philippines!
As our “kababayans” usually tend to talk about news items of international personalities like Jessica Sanchez, Bruno Mars, Apl de Ap, Darren Cris, Rob Schneider and Dave Bautista that has Filipino roots; this time – I say – why not converse about stories of individuals of 100% foreign blood that has the heart of a genuine Filipino?
It only took one random act of goodwill, a smile and the positivity that Filipinos have to convince some foreigners that they have indeed found a new home in the Philippines.
No doubts or ifs about it at all, it’s not just the beautiful beaches and the festive festas for the foreigners, but the genuine warmth and friendliness of Filipinos that make the Philippines more fun to visit and eventually settle in and stays on for good.
Marcus Davis, an American singer lauded the Filipinos’ spirit of volunteerism and reaching out even if no one asked for it. When he frst arrived in the Philippines, he never thought that a complete stranger will be there to help him out. He was defnitely touched by the “bayanihan” ideals of Filipinos who are willing to stick out to those who are in need even if the solely object they can offer is the only thing that was left to him or her.
(FYI: The Filipino term “bayanihan” refers to the spirit of communal unity, work and cooperation to achieve a particular goal. It is truly the core essence of the quintessential Filipino culture.)
“When I arrived in the airport, I was a bit lost. Someone saw me and walked up to me and offered me to use their cellphone. While I was calling, he (the Filipino) actually went and got me a drink,” Davis said.
“I think that was one of my fondest memories because I never showed in a country and someone just walked up and offered to help you like that,” he added.
It so inspired Marcus that it made him a true-blue Filipino not only
by heart but a citizen in terms of naturalization papers.
Wow!
Isn’t that something?
Another American musician, David DiMuzio, who’s from North Carolina, is a frequent Manila visitor but has now relocated to the Philippines and has collaborated with a number of Filipino artists.
“I love the country’s fun-loving and carefree nature. And I’m a good judge of that since I’ve traveled to 75 other countries,” he pointed out.
Asked what brought him to the Philippines, DiMuzio readily admitted: “Love. What else could make someone move to the other side of the world? Love for a girl, love for a country and love for music.”
And when we do talk about love, Filipinos will always be that romantic person trying to pursue their regards no matter how hard the challenges they will encounter or endure.
One of the lucky recipients of that Filipino endearment is a beautiful lady from Siberia.
Anna Rabtsun-Baylosis, a Russian singer who now lives in the old homeland, said she fnds her Filipino husband Eric very sweet, loving and caring.
At frst, she never thought that the love that her Filipino husband has for her will last long because of the distance between them. But she was truly amazed with all the efforts of her husband’s willingness to do anything for her – and closing the gap – and made her fnally part of his close-knit family.
“It’s so personal here in the Philippines. There is no handshake, there’s kissing and hugging. You really feel taken care of,” she shared.
“The frst time I visited, I instantly fell in love with the people and the place,” she recounted.
It was destiny, she insisted. “It’s all a part of God’s plan.”
It was also fated that DiMuzio and Rabtsun would wound up collaborating on a video that went viral on YouTube.
Even more interesting is their song choice: “Kahit maputi na ang buhok ko”/Even if my hair turned white – which was originally recorded by noted singer and actress Sharon Cuneta back in the Philippines.
Surprisingly, the dynamic duet of DiMuzio and Rabtsun has scored 8 million views…and counting!
“Anna commented on one of my YouTube videos,” DiMuzio recalled.
“I looked up some of her videos and I realized that we shared a common passion for Filipino music.”
“Working with David was fun and easy,” Rabtsun related. “This song is special to me because it’s one
of my husband’s favorites. Every time I sing it, I think of growing old with Eric, ‘ang aking asawa’ (my husband).”
DiMuzio remarked: “I think Filipinos are sharing the video because the song means a lot to them. Every Filipino knows it…I hope Filipinos feel proud that we spent so much time and effort on it.”
Certainly, they may struggle with the language but there’s truly something about Original Pilipino Music (OPM) that has hooked both of them.
And why OPM, if you’re patiently waiting to ask, perhaps?
Replied DiMuzio: “I enjoy the fow of the language within the music. It’s different from and unique compared to the sounds of other languages.” He singled out the “ng” sound and the repetitive syllables and vowels as fascinating, musically.
Rabtsun agreed: “Filipino songs are touching and melodic. I can feel a song’s message even if I can barely understand the lyrics. Filipinos are
naturally romantic.”
“I love Filipinos. They’re a very sweet and kind-hearted people. I feel like I have an extended family of Filipinos living in every country around the world. It’s a great feeling. The Philippines is no doubt one of the best vacation destinations on the planet. The beauty of its beaches is unmatched,” DiMuzio concluded.
Hospitality is essentially what Shu Wang of China experienced when she frst visited the Philippines.
Just like Marcus, she, too was lost and don’t know what to do. But for her, Filipinos will always extend their hands in friendship and to those who are in dire need. Now, in her 18th year of stay in the Philippines – she absolutely fnds home in the country with her Filipino friends that she now called her family.
“Filipinos are always there to help. Before I used to be alone, but my friends are now my family,” she fully admitted.
Bryan Gallinger, another American businessman in Manila, said that he had only one thing in
mind when he frst arrived in the country – make and do business!
He wanted to build a company in the old homeland but instead of the employer of the group he wanted to have – he became instead a volunteer worker for an organization that protects children from violence.
He discovered the concept of “bayanihan” just like Marcus but this time Bryan is now part of that very same process of reaching out to others in need.
After “falling in love” with the positivity of the Filipinos, he decided to stay.
“I can honestly say that I’m a better person by living here in the Philippines,” he confessed.
His name is Kyle Jennermann from Canada but he now has his Filipino name “Kulas.” It seems like the Canadian fellow is the only foreign blogger anyone would know who genuinely and really wanted to become a Filipino.
“I have never experienced before what I got to experience in the Philippines. I have never met such kind, giving, friendly, hard-working, outgoing, proud and happy people. I have never experienced a culture like the Philippines: a culture that every single day inspires me, and that I look up to. It is a place where the natural environment is unbelievably beautiful. The waterfalls, beaches, mountain, rivers…I could go on and on about it. But what really inspires me about the Philippines is the P-E-O-P-L-E. If you are Filipino and you are reading this: Thank you! Thank you for being Filipino. Thank you for being part of a culture where family isn’t only the family, but friends and strangers are family, too. Where smiling is genuine, giving is natural and sharing is a part of everyday life. A culture that goes through a lot of really tough times and suffering, but still shares a great big S-M-I-L-E,” he will absolutely answer if you’ll ask him why.
No doubts about it at all, I do believe that we – Filipino-Americans – certainly love our country but when a foreigner loves our old homeland –we feel justifably so very proud of being from our beloved Philippines.
Am I right?
Indeed, most active users of the internet – “NETIZENS” – who commented were touched by the
glowing words the foreigners had for our “kababayans.”
We saw how Filipinos reach out to one another from times of calamity, friends helping neighbors or simply extending their hands in periods of emergency and when help are needed the most.
This is really what we call genuine Filipino “bayanihan” –heroism in small ways but positively give a big impact to other people’s lives.
And aside from that, Filipinos will always fnd ways to smile and have brighter faces even when they confront all the hardships in life but always believing that they will soon have their triumphs over it all.
“Assuredly, other nationalities and cultures are genuinely hospitable as well but ours is arguably on a league of each own. Filipinos are known to have this very admirable characteristic. Filipinos love to help others. We smile and go out of our way to go the extra mile even for people whom we consider to be strangers. We love to please others even when we are inconvenienced by it,” commented another “kababayan.”
“I lived and worked in the Philippines for a year. But when I had to return to the US, I felt I was leaving home rather than going home. The Philippines was the frst place that ever really felt like home to me and I have been many places. Friendships feel like family, and the people for the greater part were warm, generous and helpful. My dream is to return and to spend the rest of my days there,” one American by the name of David Robinson expressed.
“Despite the Philippines shortcomings, I keep coming back because of the authenticity and friendliness of the people,” noted another foreigner by the name of Bill Sanders.
Seeing all the stories above of Marcus, Anna, Shu, Bryan, “Kulas” and all the others – it truly is an inspiration that made each day as we can positively impart in our everyday lives that – “Sarap maging Pilipino.”
It’s great to be a Filipino (or Filipino-American, for that matter)! Cheers!!
Mabuhay!!!

Thank you so much for the Filipino Press and the invaluable service it provides not only to the Filipino community but beyond. Through the Filipino Press, our family was able to fnd someone to care for a disabled family member. She provided exceptional care for nearly 8 years. I heard a description once that totally applied to her as an angel having a human experience. The Filipino Press was indeed a lifesaver for us, and we hope that it continues to serve for decades more to come.

When the month of February comes around, red hearts and red roses with the letters LOVE abound. Greeting cards and text messages are sent to friends and lovers all in the name of love.
But what is love?
I first associated LOVE with my first memory verse in my Sunday School kindergarten class, God is love. The idea is so abstract, that the word LOVE has become a catch-all in expressing our affection to others and even to objects. We mistakenly associate love with like. Love has a deeper meaning and should not be taken lightly, but we could not really find the right words to define it. Hence, even lovers ask themselves, what is love? How do you know if or when you are in love?
I have read so many oneliners about love, such as “Love is blind and lovers cannot see.”; Love means never having to say, I’m sorry.” “Love is a many splendored thing.” All these are so vague and leaves so much to the imagination.
The best quotes about love are the ones found in the Holy Bible, particularly in 1 Corinthians 13, popularly referred to as the
A friend is a sky-diving, mountain-climbing, hang-gliding thrill-seeker, but in the cave he felt sheer panic. He was terrifed. He tried fghting his fear, but he kept picturing his dead body moldering in the cave. Finally, he told his guide he was about to lose it, and the guide said, "Hey, close your eyes and listen to my voice. I will keep talking, calmly, and guide you through this. We will be okay. I have been here before. I will get you to the other side. But you must listen to my voice. It will not work for you to let your thoughts run wild. Just focus on my voice." He did so. What freed him from panic and fear was not trying hard to quit thinking fearful thoughts. It was listening to another voice. What voice do you listen to when you're in the cave and it's dark, when the ceiling is low and you can't back out? The Spirit longs to fow in our minds all the time. One reason why people have found memorizing Scripture helpful is that it helps us listen to the voice of our guide when we are in the cave. We set our minds on those thoughts that equip us for life. God does not want us to live in worry or fear. He wants us to live with bold confdence in his power. "For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and selfdiscipline."
Prayer to Saint Expedite May the intercession of the glorious martyr , St Expedite, recommend us, O my God, to Thy goodness, in order that his protection may obtain for us what our own merits are powerless to do.
Amen.
We supplicate Thee, Lord , to inspire by Thy grace all our thoughts and actions, that thou being their principle, we may, by the intercession of St. Expedite, be conducted with courage, fidelity and promptitude, at the time proper and favorable, and come to a good and happy end, through our Lord, Jesus Christ
Amen St Expedite, honored by the gratitude of those who have invoked thee at the last hour and for pressing cases, we pray thee to obtain from the all powerful goodness of God, by the intercession of Mary Immaculate, (today or such a day) the grace we solicit with all submission to the Divine Will
Amen
Aurora S. Cudal-Rivera My Personal Testimony
LOVE Chapter. “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast. It is not proud. It is not rude. It is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects,
always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
With these description about LOVE, many lovers or even spouses would fall short. This is the reason why there are so many broken relationships in our midst. There is lack of patience and kindness. Spouses makes record of wrongs. There is lack of humility and forgiving attitude.
Love is a feeling, an attitude, and an action word. When one says, I love you. It should be matched by action. Be patient, be kind, be humble and be polite to the one you love. Valentine’s Day should not only be for a day. It should be every day.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Today is the fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Last Sunday I mentioned in my refections the need for each one of us to have, read, study and pray over the Scripture for as St. Jerome said in the past “ignorance of the Bible is ignorance of Jesus.” This is a reality that is so urgently demanded of us Catholics today. Many of us know about Jesus from stories told about him by our friends and sometimes old members of the family. Oftentimes the knowledge that we have about Jesus come from stories that often make us know only a part of the life of Jesus if not stories that would lead us to know him but fear him and not love him in order to follow him as our Master and Savior. Hence, oftentimes we do practice the faith in God in accordance to the knowledge that we have of the Jesus that is told to us, but not the Jesus who revealed himself in the Gospels and taught by the Church in the doctrines that she has been handed over for many years. This fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, however, happens to also be the day when we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the temple. This is one of the most ancient feasts of the Church which dates back to the fourth century in Jerusalem. A celebration that began with the custom of holding lighted candles during the liturgy. For this reason in the middle ages this feast became known as the
“Candlemas.” This tradition has become worldwide and St. John Paul II made mention in one of his messages that “God enters the temple not as a powerful ruler but as a little child in his Mother’s arms. The king of glory comes not with a show of human force and power, not with great fanfare and noise, not causing fright and destruction. He comes into the temple as he came into the world, as an infant in silence, in poverty, and the company of the poor and the wise.” Truly this celebration of the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, honoring his presentation in the Temple as a young child is a fulfllment of the Old Covenant which prescribed that a “sacrifce had to be offered in the Temple when a child was consecrated to the Lord. The Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, ever faithful to the Lord observed with love and devotion this tradition as narrated by St. Luke describes in chapter 2:22-24.
The presence of two devout faithful, Simeon and Anna is worth noting in this episode of the Holy Family. In the words of St. John Paul II, “they acted as representatives of the Old Covenant – recognizing Jesus’ Lordship as Messiah in this culmination of their watchful waiting for their salvation.” Truly the celebration of this great feast is very signifcant, as it has taken over the fourth Sunday liturgy, because it allows our church to faithfully connect with the observance the precepts of the old law and puts into actuality the hopes and dreams of humanity for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ, the Lord. This also happens when our church celebrates the “Jubilee Year” that is a practice that has taken its roots in the old testament, allowing us to always remember the providence and mercy of God and seek forgiveness and reconciliation among ourselves and blessings from the Almighty.
Finally, I wish to note that this feast day of the Presentation of the Lord has been declared by Pope Francis also as a day of prayer for the those who have consecrated their lives to the Lord. Let us, therefore, offer prayers for the many men and women have offered their lives to the Lord in the service of the church. May Jesus, the light of the world, always bless them and keep them under his protection and guidance.

In the Bible, we see a pattern in which God rarely sends people into situations where their comfort level is high. Rather He promises to be with them in their fear. It is God's presence - not comfortable circumstances - that brings people to the best version of themselves.
Paul said that when we live in the fow of the Spirit, he does not make us timid, but instead gives us power and love. This is not the only place in the Bible where we see a close connection between receiving love and living in power. The apostle John makes the same association in one of the most famous statements in the Bible: "There is no fear in love... perfect love casts out fear."
When we live in the fow of the Spirit, we let the perfect love of God wash over us until our fear begins to leave. Modern science has confrmed what John wrote so many centuries ago. Love and fear are literally incompatible in our bodies. God wants to love
you - and in loving you, to cast out your fear.
Jesus was facing adversity when he told his followers that if they had faith, they could command a mountain and it would be cast into the sea. When my focus is on the mountain, I am driven by my fear. When my focus is on God, however, I am made alive by my faith. But if I did not have the mountain, I would not know that faith could be in me.
Use your imagination to picture being shepherded by the Lord in green pastures beside still waters. Is there any room for fear?
God knows that you can stand that trial; He would not give it to you if you could not. It is His trust in you that explains the trials of life, however bitter they may be.
God knows our strength, and He measures it to the last inch; and a trial was never given to any man that was greater than that man's strength, through God, to bear it. <(((><
In many ways, our life on earth could be likened to a candle. Of what use is a candle if it is not lighted? But even when it is lighted, it is not providing light for itself. It is providing light in a darkened environment. Every creation of God has a purpose and it is not for itself. The Sun is not providing light and energy for itself. Because of the sun, the grass thrives and grows. The grass in turn does not exist for itself. The grass offers itself as a food for the animals and the animals in turn offer themselves as a food for us human beings. There is an interconnection and harmony in the whole of God’s creation. And so it is for human beings. Our life is not about ourselves. It is about other people. We exist not for ourselves but for others. Our life will have meaning and purpose only if it is offered as a gift in service for our fellowmen. We are called upon to be the Light in this world to live a life of Holiness in union with the Divine life of God so that hopefully, people will experience the presence of God in the life that we live.
We have heard it said, “It is better to light a candle that to curse the darkness.” Ours is an imperfect and wounded world. There are many
things that we see and experience that we can complain about. But of what use is complaining? Will complaining solve the problem? It is okay to be concerned with our rights but we should equally be aware and committed in discharging our responsibilities. We could feel that we are entitled to a lot of things and if we don’t have them we respond with rancor and bitterness. Better to ask the question, “What can I do to help make this world a better place to live in?” The possibilities are limitless. If we ask God to direct our ways, He will lead us to ways which will glorify Him so people could experience the living presence of God in their lives. If we ask God to direct our ways, He will lead us to ways which will refect His Goodness and His Love. When we focus on building God’s Kingdom here on earth, that is when our life could be likened to a lighted candle. Our life will acquire meaning and purpose because spiritually, our life is providing light in a darkened world. We notice that as the candle is lighted and is providing light to our darkened environment, it is slowly consumed by the heat until fnally it is totally consumed then it is gone.
If we live a life of Service, our life is very much like the lighted candle. Our life in a way is being consumed because every second that passes is just a step closer to the day when we die. Our life however is providing light in this world because we continually try to empty ourselves by sharing our blessings in life. We focus on the well being of our fellowmen by sharing with them our gifts of Treasure, Time and Talent. When fnally our lighted candle is totally consumed, our earthly life comes to an end. Hopefully with God’s grace, we will God say, “Welcome, you had a life well lived, come then and live with me in my Eternal Kingdom!

MANILA -- Last December proved to be a challenging month for Alex Gonzaga and her husband MIkee Morada.
The latter revealed the news that his wife had suffered her third miscarriage last month in an emotional interview with Toni Gonzaga on her online show Toni Talks.
In the more than 28-minute vlog, Mikee shared with his sister-in-law the rollercoaster journey that he and Alex went through during the last month of 2024.
“Hindi namin talaga akalain. Wala kaming plano. Ang plano namin, baka posible maka-prepare muna ng katawan, IVF or kung ano man. Pero naturally pa rin gusto namin subukan. And then a few days delayed pa lang siya, pagtingin namin, positive. Nung nalaman namin na pregnant kami for the third time, nagpa-check up kami kaagad sa OB and okay naman. Tapos nag-decide kami na mag-iingat na talaga siya and the second week, okay pa yung ultrasound. Hanggang dun sa pangatlong linggo, sabi sa amin nung doctor, 'Naku, wala na namang laman. Blighted ovum ulit. So bumagsak ulit yung ano namin, pero mas kaya kesa sa una. Kasi, nakailan na kami eh,” he said.
The holidays were especially challenging for the couple, because they had to do multiple visits to the hospital to ensure that the pregnancy was stable after having experienced previous miscarriages. “Ginawa namin lahat. Triny namin i-save. And then ang sunod namin na check up ay December 23. So pagkatapos nun, masaya kami, baka ibibigay sa amin bago mag-Pasko, okay na. A few days before, sabi ng doctor, ‘Ay, hindi pala ako puwede sa 23. Baka puwede natin i-move sa 28.’ So siyempre hanggang 28 expecting ka. Nakalutang ka,” he
recalled. Alex admits that they received the heart wrenching news a few days after Christmas. “Nung dumating ang December 28, hindi ko makakalimutan yun. Nakahawak kami ng kamay, pagpasok namin nakita na namin kagad yung embryo, yung baby, pero wala na siya heartbeat. So nagkatinginan kami. Umiyak siyempre. Si Catherine nung una, strong siya eh. Pero nung umuwi kami ng gabi, dun siya nag-
breakdown,” he revealed. In the intimate interview, Alex also shared how they went through their frst two miscarriages, with the second one using IVF or In vitro fertilization. “Yung frst one, hindi ko naisip na possible pala na magkakaroon ng miscarriage. Iyon ang super pinakamasakit kasi excited talaga eh. Peri yun na nga, blighted ovum, ibig sabihin walang nagdevelop na embryo, walang baby. And kahit papano napag-usapan namin na mag-asawa na wala pa naman buhay doon. Hindi lang talaga time pa. Sa second one, yun ang IVF. We wanted
The current Lipa City councilor also shared how his relationship with his wife of more than four years remains strong and that he has never wavered in his efforts to give her support in the most challenging moments of her life.
In a span of two or three months. So kailangan mo talaga maximum tolerance, patience,” he shared. (MNS)
In recent years, rising infation has made it harder for many seniors to pay their expenses. This month, we’ll look at programs that can help with the cost of groceries and health care. If your income and resources are limited, you may qualify for assistance from federal and/or state programs.
<Q1> Did you know that only about half of eligible elders beneft from cash assistance for grocery shopping?
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the largest Federal nutrition assistance program. This program gives you a special debit card to help you buy food if you have a limited income and a few assets.

“The country is used to beneftting from migrant labor, but not everyone’s ready to accept their humanity,” said Pablo Alvarado, co-executive director of NDLON.
“Don’t fall into the trap that this administration wants to go only after ‘violent criminals.’ It’s what President Obama did when he used the phrase ‘felons, not families.’ The vast majority of people that he deported did not represent any threat to public safety.”
‘It burned away our differences’ At the NDLON center in Pasadena, a mile south of the Eaton fre, “Workers are feeing devastation of biblical proportions,” he continued. “Members are saying: ‘What I have on, it’s all I possess in this life. Not only my apartment is gone, but the house I clean is gone.’”
He estimates that NDLON is the largest community disaster response operation in the area, serving 1,000 people daily, including 500 cars coming to pick up donations of food, clothing, diapers and N95 masks.
“No one expects any government to be prepared for such a catastrophe. When that happens, that’s when

humble people lend a hand,” said Alvarado. “At a street corner by our center, a huge tree fell and was blocking the street … So we had an assembly of skilled workers and created a fre brigade.”
“We removed that tree, then the next, then the next one, and we posted a picture on social media, and all of a sudden hundreds, then thousands of volunteers came to Pasadena. The local government sent them all here,” he explained. “The fre destroyed so much, but at least with the people that have come here, it burned away our differences.”
“MAGA folks were helping handto-hand, with members of the DSA, clearing driveways with blocked access … They weren’t asking whether the owner of a home they’re clearing up was a Republican or a Democrat, a friend or a foe,” added Alvarado. “As we speak, there are 15 brigades removing debris across the city, and immigrant workers are leading the effort.”
“Many families have lost their identifcation papers — their passport, their consular papers, and it’s complicated to even pay for new documents,” said Anabella Bastida, membership director at the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA).

The coalition, which has over 51,000 members, has partnered with the Mexican consulate, “trying to convey all the people and contacts we can,” she continued. “We’re connecting immigrants to food assistance and social services … and particularly providing cash assistance to low-income families and those not eligible for FEMA, or fear providing their information. Yesterday, one family said: ‘I’m not going to risk providing my information to the government when I’m going to put my livelihood in jeopardy.”
CHIRLA is also partnering with local churches and the county school district to provide nearly 150 training sessions on knowing one’s rights in the event of an ICE encounter.
“We’re going to shelters, but not many members of the community are showing up. The undocumented population is really afraid of what is happening. We’ve seen ICE raids in Bakersfeld, and yesterday, ICE agents in LA County,” said Bastida.
“We’re trying to convey the message that this is happening, we need to be prepared, but at the same time, we can’t be paralyzed,” she added. “We can’t continue not going to school, not going to hospitals, not getting the help we need … if we’re going to rebuild LA.”

A household must meet both the gross and net income limits. For instance, a two-person household’s gross monthly income must not exceed about $2,215, and net income must not exceed $1,704. Additionally, their assets must be $2,750 or less. However, if there’s a member in the household aged 60 or older, they don’t need to meet the gross income test, and the asset limit increases to $4,250. These limits are updated each year.
While SNAP is a federal program, you must apply in the state where you currently live and meet the state’s requirements, as each state manages its own application process, eligibility criteria, and beneft distribution. Some states, such as California, New York, and Washington, have income limits higher than the federal ones, so it is worth applying to see if you qualify.
Currently, only less than half of eligible older adults are participating, meaning over half may be missing out on this valuable support. Please consider applying to see if you are eligible.
<Q2> Can I have both Medicare and Medicaid?
Yes, you can have both Medicare and Medicaid. Federal law requires states to provide Medicaid to certain groups, which includes many older adults and people with disabilities. If you receive SSI (Supplemental Security Income), you are automatically eligible for Medicaid. For those who don’t get SSI but want Medicaid as a senior, you need to meet limited income and asset requirements, which vary by state and change year to year.
For example, in California, a married couple can qualify with a monthly income of $2,432, and CA does not count assets in determining Medicaid eligibility. On the other side, in Washington, the monthly income and asset limits are the same as SSI’s --- $1,450 in monthly income and less than $3,000 assets for a couple --- so only SSI recipients qualify for full Medicaid as seniors.
If you are approved for FULL
Medicaid as a senior, your state
Medicaid will pay your Medicare Part B premium for Medicare Part B (and if applicable, Parts B and A).
Medicaid can help with additional Medicare costs such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. You’ll also automatically qualify for Extra Help with Medicare-covered prescription drug costs. Beyond this, Medicaid can offer more services than Medicare alone, including long-term care, eyeglasses, and hearing aids.
<Q3> I was determined I was not qualifed for full Medicaid when I turned 65 and enrolled in Medicare. Is there any way to get help if I am not eligible for Medicaid for the elderly?
If you are not eligible for Medicaid and can’t afford the costs of Medicare, you may still qualify for partial Medicaid through Medicare Savings Program (MSP). MSPs are a subset of Medicaid benefts sponsored by state Medicaid. They help people with limited income and few assets pay for Medicare costs such as premium or both premium and out-of-pocket expenses. You'll also get Extra Help with MSP approval.
There are three types of MSPs based on an individual’s income level, and each type provides a different level of coverage. Under federal guidelines, a single individual may qualify if their monthly income is up to $1,780 and assets are below $9,430, while couples may qualify if their monthly income is up to $2,399 and assets are under $14,130.
However, some states, such as New York, have more fexible MSP eligibility criteria. In the state of New York, single individuals with income up to $2,445 or couples with income up to $3,298 per month can qualify, and NY does not apply as asset test. Please note. While MSPs provide substantial fnancial assistance, they do not include additional coverage such as dental, vision, or hearing aids. Please call us if you have any questions or need assistance.
