M Y FAV O R I T E F O O D S are those made by hand, prepared by a real person with real ingredients. Whether it’s a main course or a dessert, a loaf of bread, or a glass of wine— knowing that simple culinary craft and local ingredients went into the making of a meal makes it taste even better. That’s why I love Lancaster’s food scene. It’s a serious maker community with an abundance of local flavor and culinary creativity that is on par with so many of the big foodie cities, but on a more intimate, welcoming scale.

In this issue, we take you on a journey exploring the tastes, ideas, and passion that go into innovative dishes served in restaurants around our City. From our incredibly talented chefs to the individual makers and bakers who are setting the standard for what it means to be “Made in Lancaster.” We also open the door to the authentic world cuisines that are expanding our City’s palate and teaching us that every dish has a story, a reason for being. And we toast the exciting new businesses who are adding flavor and bringing good taste to our community. We welcome our new friends and

at the same time celebrate fashion pioneers like Festoon as they commemorate a milestone birthday.

So, whether you’re dining out at one of the many fabulous restaurants, enjoying a cocktail al fresco with a friend, or preparing dinner at home, join us in sharing and savoring the local bounty of Lancaster this summer. Fresh Face: Floyd’s Cafe AS FORMER PROFESSIONAL CYCLISTS, Floyd Landis and Jake Sitler were accustomed to pain management after traumatic injuries. Seeking to avoid opioids, Floyd and Jake turned to CBD to manage pain and promote healing.

Bike cafes are common in Colorado, where Floyd founded his company Floyd’s of Leadville, and he is eager to bring his products back home to Lancaster after successfully retailing them nationwide through bike shops, online sales, and convenience stores.

CBD is one of many compounds in the hemp flower (not mind-altering THC which marijuana is known for), extracted and sold in creams or oils. Floyd is pleased to open Floyd’s Cafe in Lancaster, a friendly coffee shop that also retails bikes and his full line of CBD products. Furthermore, Floyd’s Cafe will have its own proprietary brand of CBD coffee.

Floyd and Jake love the growthoriented, progressive vibe of Downtown Lancaster, and foresee excellent conversations with athletes and others curious about the benefits of CBD. As their packaging says, “relax and recover.” In addition, Floyd and Jake are tremendously excited to have hired local Amish farmers with about 100 acres total who began growing CBD hemp

this spring, allowed by Pennsylvania for the first time this year. For farmers who formerly depended on growing tobacco, CBD hemp is the new cash crop with similar labor and storage requirements. “Let’s make Lancaster the hemp capital of the world again!” says Jake enthusiastically. Floyd’s Cafe is on the leading edge of the CBD boom, looking for FDA approval and doing their own independent lab testing and quality control. “We welcome regulation so people don’t get ripped off—we care about what people put in their bodies. After all, we’re athletes and that’s why our company was founded,” says Jake.

BS SF LOCAL BREW TOUR:

Levengoods of Lancaster The craft beer movement has been sweeping across the country, led by a desire for high quality flavors and an urge to support local economies and communities. Lancaster City is no exception, and BSSF wanted to showcase some of the unique local breweries with a new sponsored series called BSSF Local Brew Tour that will appear in each Fig Lancaster issue in 2019. Cheers! L A N E L E V E N G O O D spent years perfecting his homegrown cider as a personal pastime, playing with his recipe and learning about the fine art and exact science of making cider. Then one day, he realized he had come up with a product that was really good, and worth sharing. Lane opened the doors to his West King Street Cidery,

Levengoods of Lancaster, in the summer of 2017. It took him a year to negotiate the paperwork, permits, and financial aspects that go into starting an establishment that makes and sells alcohol. Today, all cider is made on premises, with a tasting room where guests can sample a selection of eight rotating ciders and choose from locally sourced snacks. Levengoods cider is made with juice of apples grown on a local fifthgeneration farm in Lancaster County. That juice is fermented on the King Street premises for about six weeks in a unique process that focuses on precise filtering methods to produce an effervescent, crystal clear product. The unique, celiac-friendly beverage draws people with dietary restrictions who

104 WEST KING STREET LEVENGOODCIDER.COM ADDRESS, ###.###.#### WEBSITE 20 LANCASTER

want that microbrewery vibe without the glutens. Every season brings new flavors of cider to Levengoods, but loyal cider drinkers can taste the popular cherry cider and hopped cider year round. All ciders are also available in togo bottles at the cidery on King Street, and can be found on tap in select bars and restaurants across the city.

This feature is sponsored by BSSF. Committed to their profession and to their community, BSSF is proud to support Lancaster County breweries, small and large, who are shaping the impact that the craft beverage industry has on the future of this county. BSSF is your premier advisory firm for accounting, assurance, tax, and consulting services. BSSF.COM

F R E S H FA C E Welcoming new businesses to the City of Lancaster. Rose & Nelson Rohrer with Laura Lapp “Lancaster Central Market is iconic and we are grateful for the eighteen years we have been able to be a part of it. Our grandparents, parents, Rose and I, our children, and our grandchildren have all worked at Central Market over the span of the last one hundred and fifty years and market is still going strong and getting better. Thank you for a wonderful life at market!” —rose and nelson rohrer

Fresh Face: Central Market Flowers by Perfect Pots L A U R A L A P P grew up in the world of flowers. As a young girl, her mother had a flower shop across from Longwood Gardens. Laura observed the way her mother built relationships with her customers, compelling those customers to return again and again to the place where they were known, not only by their favorite color or variety of flower, but also for who they were and what was happening in their lives and families. Laura remembers traveling with her mom to the greenhouses in Lancaster to collect beautiful blooms for the shop, and the deep-seeded belief that Lancaster was the best place for flowers was born alongside ideals of connection and relationship in business.

L ANCASTER CENTR AL MARKET

Years later, Laura’s mother was working at Rohrer’s flower stand in market and suggested Laura reach out to proprietor Nelson Rohrer for the pussy willows she was hunting for her Strasburg business, Perfect Pots. That introduction led to a working relationship between the two as Laura continued growing her business, Perfect Pots. Nelson and Rose Rohrer beautified Lancaster Central Market with their cut flower stand. When Nelson and Rose decided it was time for them to pass their market stand on to someone else, they reached out to Laura who was thrilled to accept. “We always felt something was missing from our presence in the city,” said Laura, who dreamt of being a part of the rich

history of Central Market. Nelson and Rose Rohrer have served the community for eighteen years through their market stand. They will continue to work with Perfect Pots behind the scenes and are excited for the Perfect Pots team to continue a legacy of bringing life and color into the homes of market-goers downtown. Laura says, “Nelson and Rose have laid a beautiful path and we aren’t straying too far from that.” With fresh cut flowers as the base, Perfect Pots plans to add some fresh ideas, succulents, house plants, and air plants to the mix and are excited to be more accessible to their downtown customers while carrying on the legacy of service, quality, and connection of their predecessors.

Fresh Face: Hempfield Botanicals H E AT H E R K R E I D E R believes hemp could change the world. When it’s processed, every part of the plant can be used for super-strong fiber, CBD oil, and high-protein food for humans and animals. CBD is just one of the many molecules found in the hemp plant, and although the research is still developing since last year’s farm bill allowed farmers to grow hemp again, CBD is proving to be beneficial for health and pain management. As a former RN, Heather was disillusioned with “big pharma” and the push for pills; now she and her husband Nathan are invigorated by improving peoples’ quality of life through Hempfield Botanicals which spun off from their

other business, Makes Scents Natural Spa Line, on North Charlotte Street. Hempfield Botanicals is poised to move to a new eco-friendly building planned for a brownspace on Hazel Street. The heart of Hempfield Botanicals, now a certified B-Corp, is the team who formulates, packages, ships, and markets the CBD wellness products. “We have a daily huddle with our team to plan priorities for the day and give a shoutout to somebody who went above and beyond,” says Nathan. “We involve our team in everything: they see the bigger picture.” For Hempfield Botanicals, the big picture is making a positive impact

on the local community through jobs and empowering new growers, while selling certified cruelty-free, vegan, and environmentally-responsible CBD products. Currently, they source CBD from Kentucky and Colorado, but are hoping within 5 years to buy it entirely from Pennsylvania farmers once the supply is available. Hempfield Botanicals has done its research and is passionate about the future of hemp. “We want to do our absolute best to make our community better in many different ways,” says Heather. Get your Greek on. Owner Michael Kambouroglos: “Finished with Balsamic glaze and fresh mint, the Watermelon and Feta Salad is a versatile dish—great as a starter, a light meal or snack, or as dessert. This salad precedes our Summer Village Salad, which will showcase local vegetables, particularly the amazing tomatoes of Lancaster County, later in the summer.” For at-home Greek grilling, Mike suggests to counterbalance the char-flavor with an acid as food comes off of the grill, to cut the bitterness but retain the smokey, savory effects. Lemon juice is the most common choice in Greek cooking, as it has bright acidity and a touch of sweetness.

Series

A FUNNY STORY ABOUT JA M ES M ALFREG EOT: A native West Virginian who has lived and worked in cities across the Southeast for the past seven years, he fell in love with Kate, a woman from outside Philadelphia. When they were looking to get married, they chose a “destination” wedding in Lancaster at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with a reception at Cork Factory Hotel. Cut to a few months short of their paper anniversary, when James and Kate are asked to move to Lancaster with his role as Senior VP and Market President at BB&T. “We were elated!” says James. “Our family and friends have all already been here, and fell in love. And we chose to get married here because the city had so much to offer. We had no idea we’d end up in Lancaster when we chose to get married here a year ago.” James and Kate dove headfirst into their new city the day they arrived, and haven’t stopped discovering more to love about Lancaster. Huge live music fans and avid foodies, they

Cabalar Meat Co.

spend their weeknights and weekends sampling the brunch menus, microbrews on tap, and concert venues across the city and county. We wanted to see our city through their eyes, so we asked them for some tips.

and eclectic games in the mezzanine area, plus we can get a great meal and have some tasty beer in their garden with Tucker in tow. Lancaster Brewing has a great outdoor patio too.

You know more than some locals we know. How have you learned so much so quickly? People are often surprised at how much we know about Lancaster already. But we don’t have children yet, so we eat, indulge, travel, and explore almost every night.

Have you ventured outside of the city to other towns in the county? I have to give major credit to Lititz. We love going to see live concerts, but it’s amazing that the best acts in the world will come right here to Lancaster County to work on their sets at Rock Lititz. We love to spend a day bopping around Lititz, hitting custom artisan shops, swinging by Rock Lititz to see the laboratory of world music, and then having a down country meal at a locally owned eatery.

The Imperial Restaurant

Let’s hear what you’ve discovered. What is your absolute favorite go-to restaurant? Luca is so special. We initially wanted to try Luca because some high profile food critics rave about it, and we fell in love. It can be hard to get a table, but the bar always seems to have seating. We like to share a bottle of wine and some small plates after a long day of work, and always bring visitors from out of town.

At BB&T, James is an especially young and visionary leader. As President of the Lancaster/Lebanon Market, he and his team are helping to bring innovative technologies with a personal touch to this growing area. Lancaster joins a list of power cities like Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, and DC as a regional headquarters location for BB&T. With a new merger on the horizon, BB&T is investing in the future, investing in young talent, technologies, and the local communities it serves. In Lancaster, BB&T associates have completed community service projects with the YMCA, YWCA, Girls on the Run, Aaron’s Acres, and the United Way through its Lighthouse Project, just to name a few.

Where do you like to listen to music in Lancaster? We are big fans of the Horse Inn. It has a real speakeasy feel to it, feels like something you’d see down in Savannah, Georgia. They will have soulful southern blues type live music in there, and plus the bartender is truly a mixologist! Where do you go for a special occasion meal? For a phenomenal meal, we will get a table at Amorette and enjoy their spectacular wine selection. It’s the closest place to a five-star meal you can get in Lancaster. But we also love the bar area, which plays fantastic music and has great cocktails. Have you been able to pick a favorite Lancaster brewery yet? We love anywhere that is dog-friendly and has outdoor seating, because we like to bring our goldendoodle Tucker along with us to eat and drink al fresco on the weekends. Spring House Brewery has an old turn of the century warehouse feel with spectacular food

AUTHENTIC Leading the way through innovation and example.

Authentic: Oliver Saye A S T H E C H I L D of Liberian and Guinean immigrants who worked fulltime, Oliver grew up cooking for himself and his brother. “My first dish was probably eggs,” he says with his big laugh. As a high school senior faced with career decisions, he chose the only thing off the vo-tech list that looked familiar: culinary track. The gifted instructor “blew my mind,” says Oliver. “I never looked at cooking as a profession—I just cooked to eat.” Oliver went deep into celebrity chefs, top restaurants, and gourmet magazines. Oliver still loves the fancy stuff, but his motivation is the joy on peoples’ faces when they taste his food and talk together. At the Boys and Girls Club where he is chef, the kids know that they can’t just pepper him with “Mr. Oliver! What’s for dinner!” when they see him: he wants a conversation, find out how they’re doing, visit with them during the dinner he made them. Oliver has his hands full cooking for 400 kids daily, as well as Culinary Services by Chef Oliver where he caters and makes prepared foods, mostly vegan and gluten-free. Oliver has an educator’s heart, explaining how West African jollof rice is the parent dish for Cajun jambalaya. Daily, Oliver researches and posts snippets of black history to Facebook to satisfy his love for history, his desire to educate, and to correct balance in the history books. He also hosts cooking videos called Quick ’N Easy with Chef Oliver on the TCP Network. If he ever decided to open his own restaurant, it would be West African food served home-style: “Like you are entering somebody’s home and the bowl gets passed around, the platter is there; I feel it’s a conversation, getting to know each other, who are you talking to, what are you talking about.” Find Chef Oliver's ready-to-eat meals and jarred jams at Lemon Street Market. Creating and sustaining learning gardens. T H E J A PA N E S E C O N C E P T O F I K I G A I that has received a lot of attention in popular culture is defined as the “sweet spot” or “genius zone” where one’s skills, passions, and talents meet. For Grace Julian, that spot bloomed from a passing question that grew into an idea, took root in our community, and began to blossom into what is now known as The Edible Classroom. Blessed to have three children later in life, Grace embraced opportunities to speak into the lives of her own children and other young people as a parent volunteer. She noticed an unused playground, asked the school about

turning it into a learning garden, and the concept of The Edible Classroom was planted. Today, The Edible Classroom is a non-profit that provides various garden programs in schools across the county. Although each program is uniquely tailored to the needs of the school and community that plants it, the commonality is providing children with opportunities to witness the magic of a single seed and to learn through hands-on experiences with growing, harvesting, tasting, experimenting, and tending in a garden. For Grace, being able to bring together her passion for healthy eating, fun learning, and empowering children to learn through play and exploration is the sweet spot that she grew into as her own children grew and branched off on paths of their own. “I believe all the

important parts of you converge into a beautiful something at some point in your life, and I feel like this is that for me.” On the surface, The Edible Classroom is a place for students to get their hands dirty, learn about where their food comes from, take pride in growing things, and have fun doing it. Beneath the surface, the learning that happens through The Edible Classroom’s various programs supports science standards, encourages healthy eating habits, draws kids outside, and reinforces the importance of the environment to our sustainability. “Every mom wants their kids to eat their veggies, every teacher appreciates experiences that support their curriculum, and every child wants to forget that they’re learning and just have fun!” Learn more at theedibleclassroom.org.

Clark Associates

In 1971, Glenn and Lloyd Clark founded Clark Associates as an electrical service company, with just 7 employees. Today, Clark Associates has grown into a diversified family of companies with more than 3,000 employees, nationally known for its food service equipment distribution channels. Headed by a leadership team that includes Fred Clark, Lloyd’s son, and Gene Clark, Lloyd’s grandson, Clark Associates is making national headlines for its incredible growth. Even as he continues to serve as CEO, Fred Clark has already begun to prepare for the future without him at the helm at Clark Associates. He has assembled a visionary leadership team, including his son, Gene, who is president of Clark Food Service Equipment, Dave Groff, president of Webstaurant Store, Steve Leaman, president of The Restaurant Store, and Charlie Garber, Chief Information Officer. These young executives have been with the company for many years, learning the different businesses and honing their leadership and collaboration skills. An investment in developing this leadership team has allowed the nearly 50-yearold family company to prepare for a seamless transition when the time comes, without sacrificing all that momentum. The secret to their incredible growth? According to Gene, it’s rooted in his dad’s entrepreneurial spirit. “When we talk about an entrepreneurial spirit we are referring to how as a company, we are always willing to make mistakes and learn from them. And that spirit comes from my dad. Through taking risks, he created so much growth for this company. That entrepreneurial spirit will continue to be that visionary guiding force long into the future.”

Eating vegan in Lancaster is becoming easier and easier every year. Not only are new plant-based restaurants opening, but traditional restaurants are showcasing their veggie skills by adding more delicious vegan dishes. There are many different reasons why residents of Lancaster County are choosing to

forgo animal products and stick to plants. Some choose it for health. Others for the environment. Some are driven by compassion. No matter the reason, there is one thing we can all connect over, and that’s food.

The Lancaster vegan scene is not only supported by restaurants; there are many other initiatives that are making going vegan easy. Lancaster VegFest is a free annual vegan festival that occurs the 1st Saturday of June in Buchanan Park. Lancaster Farm Sanctuary is a local non-profit that rescues farm

animals and hosts plant-based events including pop-up dinners and various speaker series. There are also many plant-based chef demos and meetup groups around Lancaster that offer knowledge and support to those transitioning to a more plant focused diet. If you’re still questioning whether Lancaster is a city that supports a vegan diet, just look at all these amazing vegan dishes! – Courtney

Landmarks G R I E S T B U I L D I N G — G O O D E N O U G H T O E AT ! Lancaster’s first skyscraper designed by architect C. Emlen Urban in 1924 turns out to be highly edible and delectable in ways even its author never imagined. The richly ornate Beaux Arts and Italian Renaissance Revival style structure is loaded with mouthwatering architectural detailing including eleven symbols of abundance and nourishment—Grecian cast stone urns overflowing with fruits and vegetables of every sort. Just below the stone tablets, and hidden within the deep architrave, are hundreds of eggs and darts. The architrave is supported by eleven Corinthian capitals, each bearing the lush foliage of the acanthus leaf. The striking curled leaves cast deep shadows across the otherwise sparse pilasters below. Just above the Roman arches are eleven festoons, each laden with flowers, leaves, and festive ribbons. A bit of imagination provides all of the color from the bright green acanthus leaves to the yellows, oranges, purples, and reds of the fruit and flowers adorning the building. Perhaps the best treat of all lies 175 feet above street level and barely detectable to the naked eye. Above each of the 18 segmental arches are more cast stone tablets depicting fruits, flowers, and foliage in a vast array of designs. All of this savory abundance is under the watchful gaze of 40 lion heads. Bon appétit!

O R I G I N A L LY F R O M F R A N C E , Sylvie Bonin and her family relocated to Lancaster. She knew she wanted to do something that she loved and hoped to share a part of herself with her new community by sharing her love of cooking. “Lancaster is a cosmopolitan place that welcomes people from all countries and cultures, and food is a big part of that. French culture is no exception—what better way to share my culture than through cooking?” A life-long learner, as well as a dedicated teacher, Sylvie goes back to France often to learn new things to bring to Lancaster. Most recently she took a course in Paris on working with chocolate. Sylvie’s classes and culture offer more than the fundamentals of French cuisine—she also introduces her students to a new way of thinking about food and cooking. For her youngest students, she encourages a

sense of curiosity and ownership. She delights in introducing young palates to the colorful and healthful variety that our farm-to-table community has in abundance. She adores seeing how relationships between friends, lovers, parents, and children blossom and grow in the kitchen. Sylvie passes on to her students a fresh mindset on time spent in the kitchen as time gained (not lost) in a shared experience with family and friends. Sylvie offers courses for every kind of learner; from children to adult couples, to chefs with some culinary experience already, there is something for everyone. Although you will walk away with whatever delicacies you create, the deeper enrichment gained will stay with you long after the last macaron, rillette, or truffle is eaten. “We put all the ingredients together, your personality, your experiences, and at the end we have made a beautiful memory and delicious meal together.”

F R E S H FA C E Welcoming new businesses to City of Lancaster.

Fresh Face: Functional Freedom J U S T I N & KO U RT N E Y R A N D S D O R P met at one of the least likely places you might imagine a romance to bloom: a nursing home. The young occupational therapists shared a dedication to providing compassionate care for their patients, and eventually fell in love, got married, moved to Lancaster, and had a baby. In the meantime, the Randsdorps also went into business together. “We saw pelvic floor dysfunction with patients of all ages, with symptoms including urinary leakage or complete incontinence, bed wetting, pelvic pain, or sexual dysfunction,” says Kourtney. “We had a vision to provide treatment for these symptoms via pelvic floor therapy with a compassionate business model that rehabs patients discretely in their natural environment: in their home.” After completing intensive training in biofeedback for pelvic muscle disorders, the Randsdorps took their mobile business plan on the road. “By treating our patients in their homes we not only keep our treatment of this sensitive issue completely confidential, but we also have the unique opportunity to see firsthand the ways our patients live their lives and how those demands can be contributing to their issues,” says Justin. On a small scale, the Randsdorps are helping a patient retrain pelvic floor muscles and incorporate behavioral or environmental modifications to reduce symptoms, but on a larger scale they are completely changing a person’s quality of life. From the senior patient who is no longer getting up four times a night, to the new mom who can attend group exercise again without embarrassment, to the middle-aged man who can now enjoy a healthy physical relationship with his wife, “functional freedom” means something different to each person. Social mission: SWAN At Fig, we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. Because of this, the Social Mission Partner Program began. Each year Fig partners with a nonprofit organization working to transform the community. This year we are partnering with SWAN: Scaling Walls A Note At A Time. When we change the trajectory of one child’s life, we impact generations. Invest in SWAN’s mission now and let’s make that change for many more children. Visit SWAN4kids.org.

Scaling Walls a Note at a Time provides life-changing intervention for children affected by parental incarceration by mentoring them through the disciplines of music lessons and performance. We interviewed SWAN student 17-year-old Bryanna Still to get her take on how SWAN has impacted her life over the past 7 years. Fig: Bryanna, SWAN has two aspects to their mission: Music and Mentoring. How has their music instruction helped you? Bryanna: When I enrolled in SWAN, I would describe myself as a 10-year-old who had no control in her life. I had experienced abandonment, poverty, and homelessness. I’d been passed around like a football and was always told what I had to do, could not do, and what not to say. Emotionally, I allowed

100

myself to be calloused as a way to numb myself and to lock the world out. When SWAN gave me voice lessons, I found a new language. Music freed me and I discovered something beautiful that I could control and a way to succeed. Within months I was singing the national anthem at the Clipper Stadium and shortly after that I sang a solo on stage at the Lancaster Convention Center for an audience of 2,500 with featured speaker Dr. Ben Carson on stage. Those were things I never dreamt I could achieve. In these past 7 years, there have been many other performances and musical training to improve my skills. Fig: How has their mentoring impacted you? Bryanna: SWAN gave me a moment

to slow down and helped me to put the puzzle of my life together. Instead of throwing puzzle pieces at me or dragging me down a path, they created a path for me. Fig: Who would you say you are? Bryanna: I am a musician, an artist, and a girl who has strong empathy and really wants to help others. Fig: As an incoming senior in high school, what are your future plans? Bryanna: I want to be a music and art therapist. I see the callouses that others have but I know there is a softer side to them and know that music and art can help them express their feelings without words and it is a way for them to gain control. As an artist or musician, I have full control over what I create, what colors I will use or what song I will sing. It is freeing and gives life. I want to give that to others.

The Lancaster Architecture Series

SECOND EDITION

THE LANCASTER SCIENCE FACTORY (LSF) is part of the

cluster of revitalized historic brick buildings on New Holland Avenue, several of which were designed by C. Emlen Urban, the late Lancaster architect known for the Watt & Shand building and other Lancaster landmarks. The Lancaster Saw, Bark, Spoke & Bending Mill was the first to operate there in 1865, followed by Armstrong Cork Company who bought the property in 1875 and then sold it to Kerr Glass in 1969. In 2004, the Baldwin family bought the property and resold parts of it, including the Lancaster Science Factory to Shirk & Sons. Today, the buildings make up a vibrant mixed-use complex that includes upscale apartments, the Cork Factory Hotel, and a number of businesses as well as the LSF. The LSF first opened in 2008, and it has become a mecca for young people to be inspired by the principles of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The LSF Executive Director Emily Landis said, “More kids are visiting us than ever before—from Lancaster and Pennsylvania but also from out of state, even out of the country.

The original first floor of what was to become the Lancaster Science Factory.

Last year we reached a milestone of 500,000 all-time visitors, and with the continued emphasis on STEM education, we expect our numbers to steadily climb.” To help “keep up with demand,” the LSF embarked on a capital campaign several years ago. In April, the organization unveiled the results—a dramatic renovation that has increased its footprint by 50%. Emily said, “This has been an incredible undertaking, and we are grateful to the many individuals and businesses that have supported this project. The outpouring of community support has been fantastic!” She added, “And the Armstrong acoustical ceilings have made a world of difference! Our spaces look great and sound so much better. It’s much easier to communicate with the kids, and the special design touches add to the fun, engaging nature of our space.” AWI Exposed Structure VP Sue Rhoades said, “Lancaster Science Factory was an exciting place to be before the renovation; now there’s just more to love. The only thing there’s less of is noise! This cool industrialstyle space is ‘exposed structure,’

where the ceiling is open and building systems are exposed. It’s a popular look, but it can be very loud, sound reverberates everywhere. We have tons of solutions for open spaces that can help them sound and feel better. This reno illustrates the power and beauty of good acoustical design, and we are thrilled to be part of such a special Lancaster institution.” Architect Rachel Haynes, with Tippetts Weaver Architects, said, “We believe we have been able to truly impact the experience everyone has when they visit the LSF. It’s a colorful, dynamic space and the sound levels are just right. Active and spirited…not noisy and out-of-control. That’s the balance we were after—fun, inspiring, and comfortable.”

Lancaster keeps looking up! Armstrong World Industries is committed to better buildings and making a difference in spaces where we live, work, learn, heal, and play. AWI created the Armstrong World Industries Foundation in 1985 for the sole purpose of “giving back” to Lancaster County and communities where it operates. The AWI Foundation has awarded a grant to the Lancaster Science Factory for its recent renovation, and AWI has contributed acoustical ceilings and walls: colorful SoundScapes ® Shapes in the form of acoustical ‘molecules’ on the walls; floating SoundScapes ® Blades in Kiwi and White; a custom printed Soundsoak fabric wall panel with the LSF logo; black InvisAcousticsTM ceiling panels tucked into the I-beams to absorb sound; black Total Acoustics ® Calla® panels in a DesignFlexTM pattern in the Maker’s Space

Better acoustics though innovative ceilings and wall solutions are just one way employees at Armstrong World Industries are making a real difference in how people live, work, learn, heal, and play. To learn more, visit armstrongceilings.com

Smart kids doing great things R ACHEL OLSEN IB Diploma Senior at J.P. McCaskey High School McCaskey Swim Team Studying Environmental Science this fall at Skidmore College “I want to become a voice for the environment. I am passionate about protecting wilderness for future generations. I am driven to be someone who will work to protect the earth’s ability to awe and inspire. Without remarkable scientists and environmental leaders, the natural world will continue to slowly be destroyed and the resources necessary for our own survival will disappear. To be able to share all of the magnificence of earth with future generations, we must continue this fight.”

“I hope teaching my passion may light a spark for a child’s future.” — Chef Fernando Garcia-Aguila, Willow Valley Communities

Doing Their Part for Lancaster Willow Valley Communities teams up with Power Packs Project to support children’s healthy eating in Lancaster City

While known as a leader in senior living, Willow Valley Communities’ commitment to helping to build a stronger Lancaster community includes doing their part for Lancaster’s children. They’ve teamed up with Power Packs Project to pilot a new initiative that supports healthy eating among the children the organization serves.

One of Willow Valley Communities’ professional chefs, Fernando GarciaAguila, is delighted to be involved in these hands-on demonstrations, with a focus on educating children about nutritious, affordable food choices, including produce. The goal is to teach the children about where the food comes from, how to cut, cook, and prepare it, and especially to experience what it tastes like. With the help of Chef Fernando, Power Packs hopes the children will be excited to share their knowledge with family and friends. READ THE FULL STORY AT WILLOWVALLEYCOMMUNITIES.ORG/LANCASTERKIDS

HYPERLOCAL FRESH PRODUCE is the year-round standard rather than the exception at Garden Spot Village. The community’s state-of-the-art Aeroponic greenhouse allows Executive Chef Michael Pezzillo to use ultra-fresh herbs in his recipes. Greenhouse-to-table literally takes minutes when salad greens are harvested mid-morning and served at noon. “Quality, fresh ingredients make all the difference,” Chef Michael explains. “Garden Spot’s on-site greenhouse opens possibilities for a year-round, seasonal

and sustainable menu. Plus, the carbon footprint for fresh produce in February is minimal when our lettuce, tomatoes, and spinach only travel 2,700 feet instead of 2,700 miles. In the summer we partner with Lancaster County farmers to source additional seasonal produce like corn, beans, and asparagus.” Your best meals have yet to be enjoyed.
