Humble beginnings, lasting stories

EVERY GREAT STORY STARTS SOMEWHERE. In this issue of Fig Lehigh Valley, we’re honoring those first chapters—the sparks of ideas, the leaps of faith, and the deep roots that have shaped our community.

From beloved businesses that have stood the test of time to fresh retail spaces bringing new life to our neighborhoods, this issue is filled with stories of passion, perseverance, and purpose. You’ll meet local leaders who rolled up their sleeves, trusted their vision, and built something that now plays a meaningful role in the fabric of the Lehigh Valley. We also highlight nonprofits that have poured decades of heart into serving others and celebrate the milestones, anniversaries, and well-earned recognitions that remind us how much can grow from even the simplest beginnings.

Inside, you’ll find our annual Holiday Gifting Guide to help you shop with intention this season, and our Nonprofit Giving Guide, which showcases the incredible work of mission-driven groups across the region. A heartfelt thank you to Capital Blue Cross for supporting this special issue and for their continued investment in the health and wellness of our community.

As we reflect on how far we’ve come as neighbors, creators, and change-makers, may we be reminded that every small start holds the potential for something remarkable. Here’s to the roots that ground us and the dreams that guide us.

Humbly yours,

A note from Fig

Hometown Values, National Reach:

The Pride of Place Behind One Firm's Success

TONY D A R E FOUNDED BSI CORPORATE BENEFITS at a kitchen table, shaped by stories from his parents about steady work and community loyalty, and by the hands - on example of his great- grandfather, Americo “the Bull” DaRe. Americo emigrated from Italy in 1911 at just 16 years old and, alongside his son, dedicated more than 80 combined years to the Lehigh Valley steel industry. Those early lessons forged a business ethos: listen first, simplify complex problems, and reinvest success back into the community. Tony’s declared mission—being an advocate on a human and financial level—has guided every decision since.

What started as a local effort to provide competitive benefits for small employers became a model of measured growth. BSI’s first clients were family shops, neighborhood

nonprofits, and chamber partners who became advocates and referrals. Those relationships, combined with a disciplined focus on measurable improvement, propelled the firm beyond its region. Today, BSI serves clients of every size in nearly every state in the nation while maintaining the consultative, relationship - driven spirit of its kitchen - table origins. That commitment was nationally recognized in 2023, when BSI was named the number one employeebenefits-only consulting firm in the country.

The firm’s current success rests in the capable hands of the 57 dedicated professionals who deliver a mix of benefits design, employee education, and client advocacy. Their day - to - day work turns Tony’s mission into practice: advising with empathy, modeling financial prudence, and translating policy into clear action for employers and employees alike.

Tony’s fierce commitment to independence is central to BSI’s identity. By avoiding outside investors and the pressures they can bring, the firm protects its ability to serve clients without decisions driven solely by margin targets. That independence lets BSI put client outcomes and long- term relationships first, honoring the values Tony learned from his family and the labor that grounded his lineage.

BSI’s civic investments are tangible. The team has donated millions of dollars and thousands of hours to strengthening local nonprofits and small businesses. As Fig celebrates “Humble Beginnings,” BSI’s journey reminds readers that legacy businesses are built from generational values, a devoted team, and the courage to grow without losing sight of the community that made them possible.

Joining forces for the future

GOOD SHEPHERD REHABILITATION AND LEHIGH UNIVERSITY have partnered to advance the future of rehabilitation through joint research opportunities addressing innovations in care for a range of injuries and conditions.

Lehigh’s research excellence is combined with Good Shepherd’s hands-on clinical expertise and century-plus track record of caring for people with disabilities. Early examples of key projects include joint appointments of Lehigh faculty who also serve as research scientists at Good Shepherd, an indoor wayfinding app for people with disabilities, a community health needs assessment, and more.

“This partnership helps deeply integrate engineering, neuroscience, and data science expertise—all things Lehigh University excels at—directly into Good Shepherd’s programs and services for people with disabilities,” said

Michael Spigel, PT, MHA, President & CEO of Good Shepherd Rehabilitation.

“Together, we can turn research into practical solutions— new tools, techniques, and discoveries that make a real difference in our patients’ lives.”

“Growth of research and enhancing partnerships are important priorities within Lehigh’s Inspiring the Future Makers strategy,” said Nathan Urban, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Lehigh University. “Partnerships like this one with Good Shepherd will be critical as Lehigh seeks to play a larger role in research connecting health data, technology, and policy.” To watch a video about the partnership, visit goodshepherdrehab.org/lehigh.

Starting in the high $300s A once-in-a-generation opportunity

St. Luke’s Match Debt Relief Program makes medical school more affordable

TAJ SINGH, MD, DIDN’T TAKE THE TRADITIONAL PATH TO MEDICINE. Before donning a white coat, he was shaping young minds as a high school chemistry teacher. But the call to serve his community more deeply led him to Temple/St. Luke’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine.

Now an internal medicine resident at St. Luke’s University Health Network, Taj is continuing a family legacy. His father was a primary care physician in Mahanoy City, and his sister is an oral surgeon. “I grew up in this community and trained in this community that cares about me,” Taj said. “Now I am able to give back to this same community. It is a special feeling.”

Medical school is a rewarding but costly endeavor. Nationwide, about 70% of graduates carry student loan debt. Taj and several classmates benefited from St. Luke’s Match Debt Relief Program, which offers a $20,000 stipend at residency placement and may provide up to $175,000 in total loan repayment for those who stay with the Network post-training.

“The Network is really encouraging students who grew up here and went to medical school here to stay in the area,” said Taj, a Parkland High School and Muhlenberg College graduate. “It gives the medical students and residents a backing to stay in this community.”

Launched in 2020, the program initially supported careers in family and internal medicine. It has since expanded to include psychiatry and pediatrics. The amount of debt relief depends on the specialty and years committed to working at St. Luke’s.

Temple/St. Luke’s students already benefit from reduced tuition thanks to generous donors. The Match Debt Relief Program adds another layer of support as they transition into residency.

In 2025, Taj joined fellow Temple/St. Luke’s graduates Kyle Tio, MD, Brianna Talbot, MD, Roshanara Diaz Mejia, MD, Kelly Riccio, MD, and Patrick Foran, MD, as recipients of the program. Since its inception, at least 20 graduates have received this financial boost.

“It’s an incredible program,” Taj said. “It helps me not worry about the financial part and allows me to put more of my efforts into patient care and our community.”

Blending humble beginnings with a bold future

GROSS MCGINLEY, one of Lehigh Valley’s largest law firms, continues a remarkable journey in 2025 shaped by growth, innovation, and a renewed investment in community. The firm’s roots in Center City Allentown run deep, anchored in a landmark building constructed in 1900 that has served as everything from a public library to a crockery store before becoming a hub for local enterprise.

Since purchasing the building in 1986, Gross McGinley has transformed this storied structure into a cornerstone of Lehigh Valley’s legal community. The extensive renovation, completed in December 2024 and recognized as a 2025 Top Project, blends centuryold character with modern design and technology.

Guided by Managing Partners John F. “Jack” Gross, Loren L. Speziale, and Samuel E. Cohen (pictured), the firm continues to drive innovation in legal services while prioritizing meaningful partnerships. In 2025, Gross McGinley attorneys and staff have actively contributed to local organizations, supported arts and cultural initiatives, and maintained the trusted, client-focused service that defines the Gross McGinley brand.

Board leadership, monthly charitable giving, and community engagement exemplify a future-minded approach that celebrates humble beginnings and invests in the promise of Lehigh Valley’s continued growth.

Music unites

FANS OF BETHLEHEM’S MUSIKFEST

have reason to celebrate early. Painter and illustrator Doug Boehm returns as the festival’s official poster artist, bringing his signature style and energy to the 2026 design. Doug first created a Musikfest poster in 2020, but the pandemic meant he couldn’t fully experience his role. Six years later, he returns with the full Musikfest experience and the opportunity to design a poster for a historic moment: America 250.

Doug’s 2026 artwork celebrates both Musikfest and the semi-quincentennial of the United States. Inspired by music’s unifying power, the poster reimagines the Great Seal of the United States, conveying the theme “Music Unites.” “We’re a little divided as a country right now, but when the music starts, we’re all singing the same song, dancing in the same street, and feeling the same good vibes,” Doug said.

Inviting Doug back felt especially meaningful in a year of national celebration. Lisa Harms, ArtsQuest Senior Director of Visual Arts and Education, noted that the Musikfest poster has always been more than a piece of art. “It is a symbol of the festival’s energy, creativity, and connection to community,” she said. “His design beautifully captures both the joy of Musikfest and the spirit of this historic moment.”

Doug’s artistic process blended traditional and digital techniques. He sketched multiple concepts, painted in black and white, and then added vibrant color in Photoshop. A former Banana Factory Resident Artist, his work has appeared in galleries worldwide, in national publications, and on tour posters.

The 2026 poster is the latest addition to Musikfest merchandise, including mugs and other collectibles, all available at the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks and online. Musikfest 2026, set for July 31 through August 9, continues the tradition of the nation’s largest free, non-gated music festival, packed with performances, fun, and beloved festival fare.

Celebrate the return of Doug Boehm and Musikfest by visiting musikfest.org for updates, merchandise, and the latest festival news.

The beauty of collaboration

THE FABULOUS ANDREA LEE,

owner of A-List Salon in Bethlehem, is as passionate about her community as she is about great hair. Every day, she and her team deliver confidence and expert styles to clients. Outside the salon, Andrea is also one of the proud co-founders of the Lehigh Valley Hair Showcase (LVHS), a platform that champions local beauty industry professionals while giving back.

LVHS provides a non-competitive stage for talented Lehigh Valley stylists to shine while raising funds for the Boys & Girls Club of Bethlehem, reflecting Andrea’s commitment to community and generosity. After a successful debut in 2025, the Showcase returns on March 22, 2026 , at Wind Creek Bethlehem, promising an even bigger celebration of artistry and collaboration.

This year, festivities kick off early with LVHS’s first-ever Holiday Party at Black River Farms Winery on Tuesday, December 9, from 5–8pm . Guests will sip fine wines, enjoy passed hors d’oeuvres, and take in live entertainment. A portion of the proceeds will go directly toward funding LVHS 2026 and continue the tradition of supporting the Boys & Girls Club of Bethlehem.

Save the date for both events to experience how A-List and other local salons are bringing beauty, creativity, and community together in the Lehigh Valley.

WHEN WALKING THROUGH THE DOORS OF WIND CREEK BETHLEHEM,

guests enter more than a resort; they step into the evolution of a local landmark once defined by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. Today, Wind Creek Bethlehem honors the city’s industrial legacy while creating opportunities for connection, celebration, and continuous growth.

Wind Creek Bethlehem’s story began with the transformation of the former Bethlehem Steel grounds into a premier luxury resort and casino. Since opening in 2009, the property has become a destination where entertainment, hospitality, and community converge.

Now a AAA Four-Diamond hotel with two towers, a bustling casino, Chop House at Wind Creek, Urban Table, the Spa at Wind Creek, the Wind Creek Event Center, and The Outlets at Wind Creek, the resort continues to evolve. Each season brings a fresh reason to visit, and none shines brighter than the holidays.

This holiday season, magic and cheer fill every corner. Stroll through the festively decorated Outlets at Wind Creek and shop from artisan vendors at the Holiday Market Craft and Vendor Show, launching the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Seasonal promotions, Black Friday giveaways, photos with Santa and friends, gift wrapping benefiting local organizations, and holiday performances offer opportunities to support the community while finding the perfect gift.

The celebrations continue with Wind Creek Bethlehem’s exceptional dining. Restaurants throughout the property feature festive specialty menus, cozy winter cocktails,

and experiences designed to bring people together. This Thanksgiving, enjoy a classic feast at Chop House at Wind Creek, featuring roasted turkey breast, Yukon gold whipped potatoes, brioche stuffing, creamed spinach, and cranberry sauce, finished with a decadent pumpkin pie with cinnamon Chantilly and spiced caramel sauce. Urban Table offers roasted herb turkey breast, sage and apple stuffing, Yukon gold whipped potatoes, and haricot verts, followed by rich pecan pie cheesecake topped with cinnamon whipped cream. Thanksgiving menus at Chop House at Wind Creek and Urban Table are available only on Thanksgiving Day, and reservations are highly encouraged.

Amid the festive dining and celebrations, Wind Creek Bethlehem continues to honor its past while creating new traditions. “What was once a steelmaking operation has evolved into a destination that brings people together to celebrate milestones and build lasting memories, especially during the holiday season,” said Patrick Ryan, Executive Vice President and General Manager at Wind Creek Bethlehem. “From festive seasonal décor and specialty holiday dining to live entertainment and community gatherings, Wind Creek Bethlehem continues to honor its heritage while creating new experiences for every guest to enjoy.”

This holiday season, Wind Creek Bethlehem invites everyone to come to shop, dine, and celebrate at a destination that keeps growing. For more information on holiday offerings, visit windcreek.com/bethlehem and outletsatwindcreekbethlehem.com.

Raising the bar (and spirits)

IT CAN BE SWEET. IT CAN BE TART. IT CAN BE ZESTY. “It’s also gluten-free—pretty versatile,” said Mike Manning, chief meadmaker and co-founder of The Colony Meadery, as he poured a dark coffee mead.

Founded in 2013, The Colony Meadery evolved from Allentown roots to open its South Bethlehem tasting room, and later its primary production facility in Easton.

Along the way, it helped shape Pennsylvania’s craft beverage scene, becoming one of the first meaderies in the state to can its products for distribution.

The Bethlehem tasting room is uber colorful. Murals, high-tops, and retro gaming consoles invite guests to settle in with local takeout and a flight of mead. Fridays buzz with the Lehigh Valley Trivia League, while Saturdays transform the tasting room into a karaoke lounge or variety show venue.

So, what is mead? It’s the world’s oldest alcohol, fermented from honey with a surprising depth of flavors. Colony’s lineup ranges from crisp and citrusy to intensely

spiced, with seasonal standouts that include Black , a blackberry-currant mead released each Black Friday, and Moravian Spice Cak e, a holiday nod to Bethlehem’s heritage.

First-time drinkers can explore a flight of five meads, while the Connoisseur Club delivers quarterly, foundercurated releases for the true enthusiasts. For those craving variety, the bar also features Colony ciders, Weyerbacher beers, and occasional Pennsylvaniadistilled spirits.

With old-world origins and new-world flavor, The Colony Meadery keeps the buzz alive in the Lehigh Valley.

Share the love, and the cookies

THE AROMA OF CARAMELIZED BROWN

SUGAR fills the air at La Madame Biscuit, the coziest bakery in Bethlehem. At the front, Owner Despina Giampilis stands confidently with an iPhone camera in hand. Her husband, Michael, puts on a stoic expression for the camera, while her friend Michelle tries not to laugh as she passes him a cookie and a cup of coffee. They’re helping Despina film the shop’s latest social media skit, but moments later, someone breaks character in a raucous burst of laughter. This is the spirit of La Madame Biscuit.

Their mantra is “Share the love, not the cookies.” Despina’s team bakes small batches of fresh cookies, with a variety of seasonal flavors always on rotation, such as Santa’s Hot Cocoa, Nutella Stuffed Ferrero Rocher, chocolate peppermint, and the viral Dubai chocolate.

Some cookies are available year-round, like Despina’s signature chocolate chip cookie, made with a uniquely decadent dough that was created with the help of her three-year-old son.

As a passionate foodie and mom of three, Despina began baking in 2020 for her family, friends, and neighbors. But as word spread about her irresistible treats, her hobby exploded into a full-fledged business. With a little encouragement, Despina leapt from fulfilling part-time online orders to shipping nationwide. Eventually, she and Michael opened La Madame Biscuit’s first brickand-mortar location in SouthSide Bethlehem. There’s a cookie to satisfy even the pickiest sweet tooth, alongside a menu of velvety-rich espresso and coffee drinks, and a generous sprinkle of good-natured fun.

Care & community

AS WINTER ARRIVES and the holiday season fills the Lehigh Valley with activity, the Capital Blue Cross Connect health and wellness centers are more than places to explore health insurance coverage. They are spaces for connection, where neighbors come together, nonprofits mobilize, and simple acts like giving blood become part of a larger mission to care for the community.

Designed to serve both Capital members and non-members, the centers provide personalized guidance on coverage options, offer wellness services and resources, answer questions year-round, and support individuals during open enrollment periods. A legacy of compassion:

Justin K. McCarthy’s enduring impact on hospice care

OVER A DISTINGUISHED LEGAL CAREER

spanning more than five decades, Justin K. McCarthy, Esq., built a legacy defined not only by professional success but by deep compassion and generosity. Among his most meaningful contributions was his unwavering support of St. Luke’s University Health Network, particularly its hospice programs, which continue to touch thousands of lives.

Justin, who passed away in August 2023 at age 95, served for many years on the Board of Trustees for St. Luke’s Visiting Nurses Association (VNA). He was a passionate advocate for hospice care, helping shape it into a vital part of the VNA’s services. His commitment went far beyond boardroom leadership—he donated more than $2 million to support St. Luke’s mission.

Lisa Giovanni, president of St. Luke’s VNA since 2012, remembers Justin as a kind, insightful presence. “He really cared about the organization,” she said. “He offered sound advice and supported us in so many ways. He was incredibly generous with his gifts and talents.”

In the early days, hospice care was unfamiliar to many. Justin’s early and vocal support helped establish its credibility and importance. “His vision laid the foundation for growth,” Lisa said. “His actions have reverberated through the years.”

Justin’s stepdaughter, Barbara Niedland McCarthy, said his dedication stemmed from a deep sense of kindness.

“He understood the impact of these programs. Supporting their mission was very important to him.”

His contributions to the Hospice Endowment fund services not covered by insurance—bereavement support, remembrance events, staff education, and volunteer training. “His generosity narrows the gap between reimbursement and the services we offer,” Lisa said.

“It’s our privilege to support families during such vulnerable times. His legacy makes that possible.”

Justin K. McCarthy’s life was a testament to the power of giving—and the enduring impact of compassion.

2025 GIVING GUIDE

BETTER better TOGETHER together

Lehigh Valley has long been known for its spirit of generosity. In our annual giving guide, you’ll get to know a collection of impactful local nonprofits working every day to support our neighbors. We invite you to learn more about their missions, milestones, and ways to invest in a better community for all.

Thank you to our Giving Guide sponsor—Capital Blue Cross. Dedicated to improving health and well-being across Central Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley, Capital Blue Cross supports local nonprofits to help build stronger, healthier communities for all.

THE HEART OF LOCAL IMPACT

FOR OVER A CENTURY, THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION has been at the forefront of lifesaving science, education, and advocacy. Since its founding in 1924, the organization has helped cut deaths from cardiovascular disease in half and continues to drive progress nationwide.

Here in the Lehigh Valley, the Eastern Pennsylvania Heart Association team carries that mission forward in meaningful, local ways. Led by Executive Director Abby Silfies alongside Development Directors Marisa Carrodo, Jessica Escobar-Eck, and Courtney Deignan, the team works relentlessly to improve the health and well-being of their community.

Through initiatives like blood pressure control programs in YMCAs, libraries, and community centers, widespread Hands-Only CPR training, and heart health education, they’re equipping neighbors with tools to protect their health and the hearts they love.

Their collaborations with local organizations, sponsors, and businesses strengthen this impact, creating a network of support that helps families live longer, healthier lives.

As the Association continues into its second century, its mission shines brightly in the Lehigh Valley, where lasting change begins with local hearts. For more information, visit heart.org or email abby.silfies@heart.org.

GROWING TOGETHER

FRIENDS OF THE ALLENTOWN PARKS is celebrating 18 years of dedication to park care with its first-ever Growing Together Awards Luncheon, recognizing people and programs helping the city’s green spaces flourish.

Held on December 18 at Cedar Crest College, the luncheon will honor philanthropist Barbara Bigelow with the Friend of the Parks Award and the Clean Team Workforce, a program of the Allentown Rescue Mission, with the Parks Stewardship Award.

Founded in 1900, the Allentown Rescue Mission is celebrating 125 years of service to the community. Since 2008, the Clean Team Workforce has provided transitional employment to graduates of the Rescue Mission, teaching workforce skills, supporting independence, and helping men save money as they rebuild their lives. Among the team’s many jobs is maintaining parks and streets, ensuring they remain spaces where families gather, neighbors connect, and nature thrives.

The luncheon celebrates these partnerships and encourages continued support for both Friends of the Allentown Parks and the Allentown Rescue Mission. Guests will share a meal, honor extraordinary contributions, and recognize the collective effort that keeps Allentown’s parks welcoming and beautiful for generations to come. Find tickets and sponsorship opportunities at allentownparks.org/events.html.

Just down the street, New Bethany serves more than 100 hot, nutritious meals, including breakfast and lunch, daily in its Southside Drop-in Center. Families leave nourished and respected, not just fed.

New Bethany’s residential services (54 units in all) include a family transitional facility, one of the few in the region welcoming parents and guardians from all circumstances. It provides an immediate place to stay, along with tools and resources to secure permanent housing, integrated social services, and partnerships with local organizations that help residents work toward lasting self-sufficiency.

HEALING ON FOUR PAWS

AT TAILS OF VALOR ® , PAWS OF HONOR, recovery begins with a wagging tail. Founded in 2014, this nonprofit in Upper Bucks and Lower Lehigh County supports Veterans, law enforcement, and emergency personnel through no-cost canine-assisted programs that bring rehabilitation and comfort. Canines are carefully selected for temperament and focus, then trained to serve as steadfast companions who help ease stress, anxiety, and depression. Each recovery-oriented program celebrates the bond between humans and dogs. Journey with a Purpose ® helps participants navigate psychological and physical trauma while rebuilding confidence alongside their service canine partners. Community Canine places highly skilled dogs with

full-time handlers in therapy centers, independent living communities, and schools, where their calm presence fosters emotional well-being. Paws of Honor extends the mission beyond graduation, sending human-canine teams to senior centers, hospitals, schools, and hospice facilities to share the unconditional love of a dog.

Every interaction at Tails of Valor reflects the organization’s guiding values of honor, respect, and service—a reminder that healing can come on four paws. Community members can support by donating, volunteering, or sponsoring a Puppy Love Day to bring teams of staff and pups to workplaces, classrooms, and other facilities to spread joy. NURTURING NEW BEGINNINGS

PREGNANCY IS A LIFE-CHANGING TIME, AND VALLEY HEALTH PARTNERS (VHP) makes it easier for expectant mothers in the Lehigh Valley to access care close to home.

VHP removes barriers and serves high-risk populations through innovative programs. The Damarie Lugo Baby Store is a donor-funded initiative that encourages women to prioritize their maternal health. By attending prenatal and postnatal appointments or parenting classes, expectant and new mothers earn points redeemable for baby essentials at the Center for Women’s Medicine at the 17th Street Hospital in Allentown. Fully stocked with diapers, infant clothing, books, and other new items, the store provides essential support for families in need.

This program complements the Center for Women’s Medicine’s comprehensive services. From the first ultrasound to regular check-ups, VHP supports mothers throughout every stage of pregnancy, regardless of insurance or ability to pay. The center provides gynecologic exams, vaccinations, cancer screenings, prenatal care, and minimally invasive surgery, ensuring women receive complete, high-quality care under one roof. Additionally, they offer transportation to and from visits, a nurse care manager to help navigate services, integrated behavioral health, and social workers to help patients integrate continuity of care in the community.

Support VHP’s mission to provide extraordinary, accessible care by contributing to the Baby Store wishlist. Learn more at valleyhealthpartners.org/babystore.

A PLACE TO CALL HOME

FOR 140 YEARS, THE CHILDREN’S HOME OF EASTON (CHE) has been a safe haven for youth in need. In 1885, a group of visionary women opened a modest farmhouse to care for children without families. That humble start has grown into a 38-acre campus that has served thousands over its tremendous history.

As demand increased, local businesses and organizations stepped in to help expand the space. In 1917, Joseph P. Smith purchased and donated what is today’s farm estate. By 1960, CHE had evolved from an orphanage to a residential treatment home, offering children of all ages shelter and guidance from caring adults. Today, CHE provides housing, a community behavioral health clinic, emergency shelter, and family support to help adolescents build paths toward successful futures.

Every program is guided by the principle that all children deserve a secure, nurturing environment. For many former residents, CHE remains a lifelong source of connection to siblings, friends, and the compassionate adults who believed in them. That sense of family is at the heart of its mission, inspiring and empowering youth every day to reach their full potential.

Celebrate this legacy of impact by donating to the Children’s Home of Easton’s programs and services. Visit thechildrenshome.org to learn more and get involved.

SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP

SINCE 1922, THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF THE LEHIGH VALLEY has been a powerful force for change. This organization of women advances leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training.

Today, roughly 140 members carry that legacy forward, championing educational equity, literacy, and food access through signature programs like the Backpack Give-Back and scholarships. They’ve assembled and donated thousands of bookbags filled with essentials, built holiday food baskets, and partnered with schools and nonprofits such as Community Services for Children. The League also helped found several key Lehigh Valley nonprofits, including the Da Vinci Science Center and Perfect Fit for Working Women.

Beyond service, members develop leadership, confidence, and community-building skills while connecting with neighbors who share a commitment to making a positive impact.

Grounded in purpose and compassion, the Junior League of the Lehigh Valley continues to shape lives and strengthen the community. Learn more at jllvpa.org.

FOR 40 YEARS, Camelot for Children has been building brighter futures for children living with serious medical challenges, from cancer to cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and beyond. Through year-round programs and community events, the nonprofit provides a safe space where these kids and their siblings can laugh, play, and experience belonging. Join the growing Camelot community by donating, sponsoring, or volunteering, and help create magical moments for children.

MIKAYLA’S VOICE inspires the next generation to celebrate abilities of all kinds, and the nonprofit’s newest co-presenter, Anna Freyhof, brings that mission to life. Accompanied by her service dog, Patches, Anna visits local schools to share how they manage anxiety together, with Patches specially trained to provide support during anxious moments and panic attacks. They teach students about mental health, service animals, resilience, and compassion, helping young people develop empathy and kindness toward themselves and others.

HOPE IN ACTION

WHEN AMY AND RICK BUCHER LOST THEIR DAUGHTER, Arden Quinn, to neuroblastoma at just three years old, they promised to keep her light shining. Today, through the Arden Quinn Bucher Memorial Fund, they’ve turned heartbreak into hope, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and pediatric cancer research.

Each year, the Buchers rally the community for Shave for the Brave, an uplifting event where friends, family, and supporters shave their heads in solidarity with children fighting cancer. What began as a tribute to one little girl has grown into a powerful movement, uniting neighbors, schools, and local businesses to fund life-saving research. This year alone, their efforts raised over $240,000 to support St. Baldrick’s mission of finding safer, more effective, and less toxic treatments for childhood cancers.

Amy and Rick have built a legacy rooted in action and compassion. Arden’s name has become a symbol of courage and community, and a reminder that one family’s love and determination can bring hope to countless others. Their work honors their daughter while inspiring the Lehigh Valley to join them in creating a future where every child has the chance to grow up cancer-free.

RELOCATING TO THE LEHIGH VALLEY

for a new job or life chapter is exciting, but this big change often comes with questions. Where should I live? Where will my kids go to school? Where’s the best place to meet people? The answers can be found at LINC, a nonprofit that has welcomed newcomers to the region for ten years.

LINC connects people to the resources, networks, and support they need to build a life in the Lehigh Valley. Their clients have come from 48 states, Puerto Rico, and 20 countries. 25 YEARS OF SERVICE, STYLE & SUCCESS

FOR 25 YEARS, THE PERFECT FIT, a program of YWCA Allentown, has been transforming the lives of women across the Lehigh Valley. Founded in 2000 by five community organizations, it was built on a shared belief that every woman deserves the opportunity to succeed. Since then, The Perfect Fit has empowered more than 13,000 women with professional attire, career support, and the confidence to ace interviews and step boldly into the workforce.

The program’s success is powered by the Lehigh Valley community coming together to uplift other women. Each year, individuals and local organizations donate over 20,000 items of clothing, shoes, and accessories to stock The Perfect Fit. A dedicated team of staff, along with more than 40 volunteers and board members, keeps the program thriving— helping women prepare to enter or re-enter the workforce with dignity while strengthening families across the region.

YWCA Allentown’s Perfect Fit Resale Boutique on the ArtsWalk in Downtown Allentown offers a shopping experience that’s both meaningful and stylish. Shoppers can browse new and gently used pieces at affordable prices, knowing every dollar spent directly supports women in the community. The boutique offers a fun, welcoming atmosphere in person, as well as virtual appointments.

This year, The Perfect Fit celebrated its 25th anniversary with Outfit to Empower, a luncheon honoring the women who have walked through its doors and the volunteers, donors, and partners who make each transformation possible.

Guided by the women it serves, The Perfect Fit reflects their voices, ideas, and experiences in every decision. Each pressed blazer, clasped necklace, and shared smile tells the story of a community united by purpose and compassion. Join in that mission by donating items, shopping the Resale Boutique, or volunteering time, and help local women step into their full potential.

A LEGACY OF GIVING

FOR THE ZELLNER FAMILY, giving isn’t reserved for a season— it’s a lifelong commitment.

A proud member of Kutztown University’s Class of 1986, Jim Zellner has deep roots in the Lehigh Valley and a lasting bond with his alma mater. His impact includes over a decade of service on the KU Foundation Board and continues through student support and strategic partnerships.

Inspired to help students facing personal loss, Jim established an endowed scholarship in 2005 for Kutztown business or education majors who lost a parent, providing both financial support and a lasting gesture of compassion.

In 2022, the Zellner family helped bring KU and Folds of Honor together, aligning the organizations to provide scholarships to families of fallen or disabled service members and first responders, extending opportunity to those who need it most.

Jim, his wife Joanna, and their three children (Ava, Conor, and Brooke, who just completed her master’s degree at KU) continue to give with open hearts—season after season.

“Giving back is how we honor those we love and the values that shaped us. It’s how we help others find hope through education.”

Giving Back: Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites

TUCKED ALONG THE MONOCACY CREEK, Bethlehem’s Colonial Industrial Quarter (CIQ) is considered one of America’s earliest industrial parks. The collection of 18thcentury mills and workshops was built by early Moravian settlers. For 60 years, Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites (HBMS) has cared for these landmarks, ensuring their stories continue to educate and inspire.

HBMS oversees an extensive collection of historic buildings, artifacts, tours, and community programs that bring Bethlehem’s unique history to life. Founded by the Moravians in the 1740s, the city’s preservation has long been a local effort sustained by generations of volunteers and advocates. “If it weren’t for the vision of those early volunteers who wanted to preserve the Colonial Industrial Quarter, everything could

have gone in a different direction,” said LoriAnn Wukitsch, HBMS President & CEO. “Now this beautiful space is one of the most photographed locations in Bethlehem.”

That vision was championed by preservation leader Ralph Grayson Schwarz, who would have turned 100 this year. His dedication laid the foundation for the ongoing work HBMS continues today. Nearly every artifact across its 20 historic sites has been donated by community members, reflecting Bethlehem’s shared commitment to keeping its story alive.

This year, HBMS proudly celebrates 60 years of preservation and the recognition of Historic Bethlehem as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. “Sixty years is an exciting milestone,” said Lindsey Jancay, Vice President and Managing Director of HBMS. “It’s given us a moment to reflect

on the needs of our community and historic sites, and to look forward to the future.”

Looking ahead, HBMS has embarked on the Overlook on History Project, an ambitious $1.5 million initiative that will link the restored Grist Miller’s House to the Luckenbach Mill with a striking glass-and-steel classroom and exhibition space. Expected to open in early fall 2026, the project will expand educational programming, welcome more students, and create new opportunities for engagement.

Through the dedication of its volunteers, staff, and supporters, HBMS continues to protect the tangible reminders of Bethlehem’s beginnings while creating space for new stories to unfold.

75 years of putting members first

MEMBERS 1ST FEDERAL CREDIT UNION

is celebrating 75 years of people helping people, a legacy that began in 1950 when nine individuals on a central Pennsylvania naval base pooled their resources to support one another. “We have very humble beginnings,” said Michael Wilson, President and CEO of Members 1st Federal Credit Union. What started as a small act of community has grown into a member-owned, not-forprofit financial institution serving more than 600,000 members across nearly 60 branches throughout Pennsylvania, including five in the Lehigh Valley.

Rooted in its founding philosophy, Members 1st has built its success on a culture of care. Every decision begins with the belief that when associates are supported and empowered, they, in turn, uplift members and communities. This spirit of connection continues to define the organization’s mission to serve through support, empowerment, and relationships that help members live well financially through life’s moments and milestones.

Over the past 75 years, Members 1st has evolved to meet the needs of its members, investing in innovation and

developing digital tools that make financial wellness accessible anywhere. Its award-winning MyConcierge ™ service connects members directly with a personal financial concierge for one-on-one support.

The credit union’s commitment to community runs just as deep. Associates volunteer thousands of hours each year to local charities and causes, while the Members 1st Charitable Foundation strengthens nonprofits across the region. The team embraces servant leadership, giving back to the neighborhoods they proudly call home.

Members 1st recently earned national recognition as one of Forbes and Statista’s 2025 Best-In-State Credit Unions—an honor achieved for the fifth consecutive year. Fewer than three percent of credit unions nationwide earn this distinction, making the recognition especially meaningful during this milestone year.

As Members 1st celebrates 75 years, it continues to look ahead, investing in people, technology, and community with the same neighborly care that has guided its journey from day one. Learn more at members1st.org.

NESTLED IN THE HEART OF THE

LEHIGH VALLEY, The Painted Petal is a boutique guest house and intimate event venue that stands as a testament to the art of preservation. Painstakingly rescued and restored by Owner and Innkeeper Maggie Fischer, this beautiful 1910 Craftsman-style home was once on the brink of demolition. “When we found her, she was about ready to be torn down,” Maggie recalled. “But underneath it all was an absolute work of art waiting to come back to life.”

Renovations began in 2023, revealing exquisite architectural details—intricate woodwork, artisan leaded glass windows, and ornate light fixtures—each lovingly revived to its former splendor. From the moment guests step through the door, they’re greeted by vintage charm and craftsmanship. Every detail tells a story and transports visitors back in time, reflecting Maggie’s meticulous eye and respect for history.

Guests can unwind in one of five unique bedrooms, the parlor with its terracotta fireplace, or the music room adorned with period décor and carefully chosen antiques. A fully functional 1920s kitchen, complete with a restored stove and refrigerator, adds a nostalgic

touch mirrored by a curated collection of vintage dishware, books, magazines, and art throughout the home. Plush linens and premium toiletries make every stay feel luxurious, while charming gathering spaces and outdoor terraces provide perfect spots for entertaining or relaxing.

At the heart of The Painted Petal is Maggie herself. With a background in marketing and design, she brings a modern sensibility to historic spaces, blending her passion for preservation with a flair for creating memorable experiences. Her commitment extends beyond these walls through her work with the Knauss Homestead Preservation, a continuing effort to honor local heritage through restoration and community engagement.

Easton shines bright

THIS SEASON, Easton is celebrating the stories that shape the city—the milestones, growth, and dreams turned into legacies. From long-standing familyowned shops to fresh retail spaces, and nonprofits like the Greater Easton Development Partnership (GEDP) weaving it all together, Easton thrives because of the people who invest their hearts here.

Easton’s story has always been one of humble beginnings and bold vision. Founded as a riverside trading post, the city grew through creativity, commerce, and community. Generations of makers, shopkeepers, and dreamers built the foundation that still stands today. That same spirit lives on in every bustling market, café, and storefront lining the historic streets.

During the holidays, Easton shines even brighter as downtown transforms into a winter wonderland. Every weekend from November 28 to December 21, the Easton Winter Village sparkles with twinkling lights, artisan vendors, and festive treats that bring magic to Centre Square. Just steps away, one-of-a-kind boutiques, handmade goods, cozy restaurants, and craft beverages deliver local flavor.

Small Business Saturday brings extra excitement with the Easton Winter

Market, where regional farmers and makers showcase their best, and the new Vendor Pop-Up at the Bank Street Annex. For an extra dose of holiday cheer, stroll through the circle, enjoy live music, or take a carriage ride under the glow of the Peace Candle.

Collectors can pick up the 2025 Holiday Ornament honoring Pearly Baker’s Alehouse, a hallmark of Easton’s dining scene for nearly 30 years. Known for its lively atmosphere, seasonal menu, and dedication to craft beer, Pearly’s has welcomed generations of locals and visitors. Each ornament purchase supports the Easton Main Street Initiative, making it a gift that gives back. Looking ahead, GEDP’s A Night of Bourbon returns in February, inviting guests to toast, mingle, and support the city they love at this exclusive fundraising event.

From its modest roots to its modernday renaissance, Easton is a city built on community. Every corner tells a story. Through sponsorships, volunteerism, and active participation, Unity Bank demonstrates that strong communities are built together. Their collaboration with the Easton Library is just one example of how they help create spaces where neighbors of all ages can learn, grow, and thrive.

Where learning comes to life

IMAGINE A PLACE WHERE STUDENTS ARE FREE TO EXPLORE THEIR PASSIONS, stretch beyond their comfort zones, and take charge of their learning.

That’s the experience at Moravian Academy, founded in 1742 on the philosophy that every child—regardless of background or belief—deserves an education centered on their growth and potential.

Two distinct campuses serve students from Preschool through Grade 8, each offering a unique path to discovery. Families may choose the Swain Campus in Allentown, a fully secular, values-based program, or the Historic Downtown Campus in Bethlehem, infused with inclusive Moravian traditions. Signature programs such as Swain’s outdoor education and the Historic Downtown’s Spanish Immersion Program foster curiosity, confidence, and communication skills.

In grades 9–12, all students join together on the MerleSmith Campus, a vibrant, college-like environment where experiential learning brings academics to life through internships, service projects, and real-world collaborations.

Supported by Moravian Academy’s College Counseling Program, which provides individualized, relationship-driven

guidance, students are empowered to find their best-fit schools—with 95% of the Class of 2025 attending one of their top three choices.

Moravian Academy nurtures joyful learners and inclusive global citizens who are confident, curious, and ready to excel. Learn more at moravianacademy.org.

Where the holidays meet history

AS THE SUN SETS ON A COLD WINTER DAY IN BETHLEHEM, the day isn’t over—it’s just beginning. Street lamps glow, snowflakes drift from above, and the clatter of horse hooves blends with the chiming of bells. There is a sense of possibility in the air, a feeling of magic.

Founded in 1741 by Moravian settlers, Bethlehem was built on faith and determination. During the Great Depression, city leaders sought to bring hope to neighbors and embraced a bold idea: naming the town Christmas City, USA. With support from the Chamber of Commerce and community letter-writing campaigns, Bethlehem earned the title. Today, the Citizens Christmas City Committee, formed in the 1960s, continues to preserve that spirit for generations.

Every holiday season, Bethlehem transforms into a storybook scene. Red ribbons adorn lamp posts as music fills the air. Bundled up, locals and visitors stroll along Bethlehem’s award-winning Main Street, cupping warm beverages as they browse unique shops. Guests admire handmade Polish blown glass at Bethlehem Christmas Shoppe at Hand Cut Crystal, step back in time at the iconic Historic Hotel Bethlehem, or search the Moravian Book Shop for the perfect bedtime story. Families delight at Dear Santa’s whimsical workshop, where they can write letters, meet Santa himself, and peruse ornaments, nutcrackers, and locally made gifts.

draw thousands from across the globe to experience its holiday magic.

“Bethlehem was built on incredible history, and it shines with wonder each holiday season,” said Tom Dubreuil, owner of Dear Santa.

“Come for the history, stay for the magic. This is Christmas City, USA.”

ENTREPRENEUR DEVIKA

KNAFO, motherhood sparked a shift in priorities and inspired a movement. After returning to the Lehigh Valley to raise her family, she noticed how difficult it can be for mothers to find authentic connection and creative outlets. Her answer was to establish The Mom Market, a seasonal pop-up at the Bethlehem Rose Garden that brings together moms who are building businesses, pursuing passions, and balancing it all with grace.

Free and open to the public, the familyfriendly event features entirely momowned and women-owned vendors. Attendees enjoy food, entertainment, crafters, and local merchants, plus activities like yoga, storytime with Ms. Rachel, and a Disney Princess and Hero dance party.

“Motherhood is a role I deeply honor,” Devika said. “At the same time, I believe

it’s equally important for women to have a meaningful source of income and a space for creative expression beyond being a mom.”

Devika runs The Mom Market as part of her marketing firm, The Digital Attaché. She’s visited more than 30 countries and brings a global perspective to her local work. Drawing from a family of entrepreneurs, she connected with other women in business across the region and quickly recognized a shared desire for collaboration.

“Talking with these women proved that thoughtful ambition and family dedication can go hand in hand,” she said. “That’s the beauty of The Mom Market. It removes the challenges of finding other entrepreneurs by bringing together a diverse group of women who are building businesses rooted in their skills and passions.”

The Mom Market has grown rapidly. Following a successful summer debut, the fall event expanded to 60 vendors and multiple sponsors, signaling the strong demand for the supportive space Devika is creating.

“Getting to know all the women involved has been so fulfilling,” Devika said. “As a parent, having people around you to support you is so important. This is designed to uplift business-minded women who want to grow on their own terms amidst the chaos of motherhood.”

Devika’s work with The Mom Market is a powerful catalyst for connection and empowerment. “Together as a collective, we’re building more than just a market,” she said. “It’s a community grounded in mutual support, respect, and shared ambition.”

A regional vision

BOWTIE? CHECK. FUNKY SOCKS? ALWAYS. BIG VISION? ABSOLUTELY. For nearly three decades, Tony Iannelli has been the driving force behind The Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, transforming it from a handful of local chambers into one of the top ten in the nation.

What began as a few groups banding together has grown into a regional powerhouse, serving nearly 5,000 businesses and 280,000 employees across Pennsylvania and New Jersey. With more than 30 Affiliated Chambers, committees, and Diversity Councils working alongside over 1,500 volunteers, The Chamber’s impact is felt on every main street.

The Chamber’s mission goes beyond membership, strengthening the economy and the quality of communities in the Greater Lehigh Valley. The dedicated Chamber team works daily to create opportunities for connection and growth through business networking, professional education, signature events, and local advocacy. Through its nonprofit foundation, over $1 million has been poured directly back into the community for Main Street beautification projects. And Tony? He’s kept the conversation going as the host Business Matters on WFMZ-TV, a columnist The Morning Call , and a familiar voice on iHeartRadio.

From humble beginnings to a regional force for good, The Chamber’s story—like Tony’s trademark bowtie—is tied together by community, enthusiasm, and a whole lot of Learn more at lehighvalleychamber.org.
