Boldly curious
GREAT IDEAS OFTEN BEGIN WITH A SIMPLE QUESTION.
In this issue of Fig Lehigh Valley, we celebrate the thinkers, makers, and dreamers who ask those questions every day: What if? Why not? What’s next?
Across studios, stages, and classrooms, local creatives, educators, and entrepreneurs are shaping what comes next for our community. This season, we’re highlighting the fresh perspectives they bring to the region.
Our arts and culture guide takes readers behind the scenes with organizations like ArtsQuest, Pennsylvania Youth Theatre, The Arts at Lafayette, Lehigh University Art Galleries, and Kutztown Presents!, where imagination and artistry go hand in hand. Education also takes center stage in features on Muhlenberg College
and Moravian University, where students are encouraged to explore boldly, think critically, and stay endlessly curious.
On our cover, Fig Lehigh Valley proudly features Brandon Avery of The Social Tour, a visionary whose work uplifts local innovators and sparks meaningful connections. Inside, we also shine a special light on Guy, Jamie, and Dakota— the talented creatives who help bring each issue of Fig Lehigh Valley to life.
Let this issue be a window into inspiration. Whether trying something new, supporting local arts, or simply pausing to wonder what if , may it serve as a reminder that curiosity is always the first step toward change.
Stay curious, Ashley Russo

World-class cyclist’s journey to peak performance
MANDY MARQUARDT
is a powerhouse on two wheels. As a community ambassador for St. Luke’s University Health Network and a world-class cyclist, her determination inspires others. But behind the medals and accolades lies a deeper story— one of resilience in the face of health challenges. Mandy lives with Type 1 Diabetes, a condition that adds complexity to her life as an elite athlete.
Years of intense training began to take a toll on Mandy’s feet, prompting her to seek help from Casey Gerety, DPM, of St. Luke’s Podiatry. She was diagnosed with hammertoes and hallux valgus— a painful bunion condition. These issues not only caused discomfort but also affected her cycling performance.
Recognizing the need for specialized care, Dr. Gerety referred Mandy to Elizabeth Scifers, DPT, a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy. As the program manager for foot and ankle care at Physical Therapy at St. Luke’s, Elizabeth understood the added risks diabetes posed. She designed a custom rehabilitation plan for Mandy, starting with orthotics—specialized shoe inserts tailored to her needs.
“The orthotics are a super-thin design, custom-molded to Mandy’s feet,” Elizabeth said. She crafted orthotics tailored to every part of Mandy’s routine—from walking to sprint cycling.
“We also analyzed Mandy’s gait and foot posture and recommended conservative therapies such as taping and bracing to address the hammertoe and hallux valgus,” Elizabeth said.
The goal was to reduce pain and prevent complications, especially given the importance of foot health for those with diabetes. Mandy ’s progress was evident.
“The orthotics in her cycling shoes have already made an impact on her hip impingement. She is able to activate her hip flexor and feels more centered on the bike,” Elizabeth noted. Exercises to improve ankle mobility and biomechanics were added.
Jill Eisenberg, DPT, observed changes in Mandy’s leg alignment, which led to muscle soreness as her body adapted. Her treatment included hands-on techniques, shockwave therapy, and targeted exercises.
With continued care and support, Mandy pushes her limits and advocates for foot health, especially for those managing diabetes. Her story is a testament to teamwork, perseverance, and the power of expert care.

From survivor to changemaker: Annabella’s Gold Award journey
EVERY DAY, GIRL SCOUTS are out in their communities using their talents as a force for good. For some, that journey leads to the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn—the Gold Award. Achieved by fewer than three percent of Girl Scouts nationwide, this prestigious award recognizes girls who identify a need in their community, develop a sustainable solution, and lead others to make it happen.
Annabella, a Girl Scout for 13 years, has proudly joined this elite group. As a stroke survivor, she transformed her personal experience into a mission by developing brain injury prevention toolkits for students, families, and the community. “I gained confidence in speaking publicly and convinced others to join the effort by making it personal to my stroke experience,” Annabella said. “I overcame the trauma of my stroke and learned that through true collaboration, we can change the world.”
Her project taught her the power of teamwork, resilience, and inspiring others through authenticity. Now, as she pursues a career in occupational therapy, Annabella will carry the skills and courage she gained from Girl Scouts into her next chapter.

Open enrollment made simple
AS THE LEAVES CHANGE, so do life’s seasons—and for many, fall signals the start of Medicare and healthcare open enrollment. Whether approaching retirement or aging out of a parent’s plan, choosing the right coverage is one of the most important decisions an individual can make. That’s where the Capital Blue Cross Connect health and wellness centers come in, offering an innovative, welcoming space where anyone, member or not, can explore options, get answers, and even purchase a plan on the spot.
One-on-one consultations are available in-store or virtually, meeting people exactly where they are. From understanding the fundamentals of Medicare to re-evaluating an existing plan, the team of experts tailors solutions for medical, dental, vision, and prescription needs. This personalized
approach is far from average and was designed with the community in mind.
In October, the Capital Blue Cross Connect health and wellness centers will host public Medicare seminars, creating a space for conversation, clarity, and confidence. More than just a place to buy insurance, the centers blend health and wellness with customer service and education, positioning Capital Blue Cross as a trusted community resource and industry leader.
The Medicare annual enrollment period runs from October 15 to December 7, 2025, and open enrollment for under-65 individual and family plans runs from November 1, 2025, to January 15, 2026. This open enrollment season, visit the professionals at Capital Blue Cross Connect or schedule a virtual appointment at CapitalBlueCrossConnect.com.

MEDICAL SCHOOL

John Sankari – Class of 2028 | Northampton, PA Northampton Area High School Muhlenberg College
Temple/St. Luke’s student John Sankari believes that when it comes to medical care, everyone deserves to feel heard and understood. Sankari views his medical training as a gateway to advocating for those who can’t always advocate for themselves. “There is a place for me in medicine to connect in one-on-one situations, take away the middleman, and make the patient more comfortable,” he says. “I could have gone anywhere and tried to work on the things I really care about, but I’m so glad I had the chance to stay in my hometown for medical school. Here, you can throw out an idea and they’ll try to find a way to help make it happen. I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to learn at Temple/St. Luke’s.”

A second life for art & local families
AT HABITAT LEHIGH VALLEY’S HELLERTOWN
RESTORE, forgotten treasures find new life—and so do the local families they serve. Every week, longtime volunteer Cindy Miller works with teammates Joyce and Lynn to comb through stacks of donated artwork, including paintings, prints, sculptures, and delightfully quirky oddities.
“Working with donations at ReStore is like opening Christmas presents,” Cindy said, recalling finds as varied as African masks and a bowl fashioned from welded keys.
These discoveries are researched, curated with care, and offered at the ReStore, a mission-driven marketplace for new and donated furniture, lighting, tools, and salvaged materials. Proceeds directly support Habitat’s Home Repair Program, helping Northampton and

Lehigh County residents stay safely in the homes they love. When the volume and quality of donations allow, select items from the ReStore are offered in a silent Art Auction. These auctions make creative expression affordable and accessible while supporting critical home repairs. The next auction date will be announced online.
Through the ReStores and Art Auction, Habitat transforms overlooked objects into opportunities and exchanges beautiful art for stronger, safer homes. There are many ways to build with Habitat: volunteer, donate gently used items, shop at the ReStores, or attend fundraisers like the Art Auction. Join the effort to help local families frame a brighter future for themselves at HabitatLV.org.

Autumn in Easton
EASTON IS A LIVING GALLERY, and fall is one of its boldest exhibits. As leaves turn and crisp air rolls in, the city bursts with creative energy, inviting exploration at every corner. Mural-lined alleys, sculpture gardens, and open studios welcome visitors to experience art where it’s made and hear artists’ stories firsthand. Public art, grassroots spaces, and a thriving independent theater scene help define Easton’s creative identity.
Art, culture, and community converge in events like the Easton Fall Sweet Stroll, the Easton Farmers’ Market Hot
Pepper Showdown, and Sunday Jazz Brunch at Easton Public Market. The season crescendos with the beloved PA Bacon Fest, Peace Candle Lighting, and Easton Winter Village kickoff.
Behind these events and initiatives is the Greater Easton Development Partnership (GEDP), a nonprofit committed to supporting local businesses, building community, and celebrating creativity.
Whether sipping cider at an outdoor concert or supporting a local maker, Easton invites curious minds to wander, connect, and be inspired.

Standing strong, together
FOR MORE THAN 60 YEARS,
Community Action Lehigh Valley (CALV) has strengthened the region through initiatives that address housing, food access, economic development, neighborhood revitalization, and youth empowerment. Its programs reached over 114,000 people in 2024, helping families secure stable homes, connecting youth with mentors, supporting small businesses, and providing fresh, healthy food.
Each program addresses a vital need while reinforcing the others, creating a network that lifts the entire community—because when one

household thrives, neighborhoods grow stronger. However, many programs that rely on state and federal funding now face uncertainty, putting these vital lifelines at risk. With dedicated program directors leading the charge, CALV continues to champion compassion, equity, and opportunity across the Lehigh Valley. Community involvement through volunteering, collaboration, financial contributions, or advocacy helps ensure these essential programs reach those who need them most. Breaking through the Sea of Sameness:
How BSI Corporate Benefits and Liquid Collaborated to Deliver a Fresh Website Experience
Working with an enthusiastic team is always such a fulfilling experience—and BSI was no exception! Their openness to new ideas that pushed their visual presence forward made this such a rewarding collaboration. I’m so thrilled I got to be a part of it!”
— Alyssa Sopko, Art Director, Liquid
Creative Credits: Alyssa Sopko and Becca Scott

IN AN INDUSTRY CROWDED with websites that look and feel alike—filled with templates, buzzwords, and generic messaging— employee benefits consultants face a daunting challenge: standing out and truly communicating what makes them different.
BSI Corporate Benefits recognized this and saw their website redesign as more than a visual update. Partnering with Lehigh Valley-based Liquid, a digital-focused marketing agency known for strategic creativity, they set out to break the mold.
THE BSI TEAM FOCUSED ON THREE MUST-HAVES.
First, they wanted to rise above the “sea of sameness” by avoiding industry clichés and templated designs that make it hard for buyers to see what sets one firm apart. BSI’s site needed to tell a unique story grounded in their client promise of “No Lazy Answers” and their stellar Net Promoter Score of 94%.
Second, they aimed to balance complexity with clarity. Employee benefits is a nuanced field, but the site needed to feel approachable, like a conversation with a knowledgeable team member.
Third, they sought to align the design and tone with their consultative, human approach to client relationships and their commitment to being “an advocate for our clients on a human and financial level.”
By combining BSI’s dedication to client advocacy with Liquid’s digital strategy and storytelling expertise, this collaboration built more than a website. They created an engaging story-driven experience with intuitive navigation and content focused on real client challenges, not just jargon. Together, they redefined how BSI could stand apart in a crowded marketplace by telling a story about a team being true to their uniqueness. It’s a fresh, forward-thinking take on a traditionally complex field, driven by two curious teams unafraid to ask, “What if we did it differently?”
What visitors to the site see today is just the beginning. Stay tuned for more updates on the horizon.
Partnership in the park
FRIENDS OF THE ALLENTOWN PARKS and Community Bike Works are teaming up this fall to make a difference. From October 6–10, they’ll host a food drive to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Donations of non-perishable food items, household essentials, and hygiene products can be dropped off at Community Bike Works Monday through Friday, 10AM–4PM. A full list of requested items is available at allentownparks.org/events.
The collaboration highlights the strengths of both organizations. Community Bike Works, known for teaching life
skills through bicycles, also grows and distributes fresh food to those in need, while Friends of the Allentown Parks enhances the city’s green spaces and brings neighbors together.
Their shared efforts come to life at Keck Park, a hidden gem near the Lehigh River. Beyond its basketball courts, football field, skateboard park, and picnic pavilion, Keck Park is also home to Bike Works’ raised garden beds and community food pantry.
Learn more about this partnership and how to get involved at allentownparks.org.

Where history & hospitality meet
WHEN GUESTS WALK THROUGH WIND
CREEK
BETHLEHEM, they step into more than a luxury resort. They are stepping into history, artistry, and innovation. Nearly every corner has a story of the property’s past, and some striking details are hidden in plain sight. From replicas of authentic blueprints lining the hotel walls to murals and art installations, Wind Creek Bethlehem offers a piece of history that connects the past and present, turning every visit into an enriching experience.
“Wind Creek Bethlehem isn’t just a resort; it pays homage and respect to the creativity and resilience that define this region,” stated Patrick Ryan, Executive Vice President and General Manager at Wind Creek Bethlehem.
“These details transform a visit, giving guests a deeper connection to Bethlehem’s roots while showcasing a vision for the future.”

The “X” Structures on the Hotel Towers
As guests approach the Wind Creek Bethlehem Hotel, they’ll notice the striking “X” structures accenting the building’s exterior. This design is a purposeful homage to Bethlehem’s industrial past, mirroring the framework of the historic Ore Bridge, a massive 542-foot steel structure that is now a proud landmark at the property’s front.

Original Bethlehem Steel Blueprints
In select rooms of the new hotel tower, guests will find a unique tribute to the city’s steelmaking legacy: wallpaper featuring replicas of Bethlehem Steel blueprints. Once used to build the city, these original plans are a powerful nod to the craftsmanship that shaped Bethlehem’s identity.

Dean Cornwell Mural
Above the escalators located off of the hotel lobby, a striking mural by illustrator Dean Cornwell captures the spirit of American industry and Bethlehem Steel’s heritage. Originally created for Bethlehem Steel, the restored mural blends depictions of machinery and laborers with golden figures symbolizing progress and innovation, honoring the legacy of the region.
Skylight Shadows at The Outlets at Wind Creek
When walking through The Outlets, look up at the staggered skylights. Their rhythmic design symbolizes the rise and fall of the sun, creating an interplay of light and shadow that shifts throughout the day— a subtle detail that recognizes both movement and balance, like the evolution of Bethlehem itself.

Hands-on history
JUST STEPS FROM BETHLEHEM’S
ICONIC
BLAST FURNACES, the National Museum of Industrial History (NMIH) packs a powerful punch of history, horsepower, and hands-on fun. Housed in a former Bethlehem Steel building, this Smithsonian-affiliated museum invites visitors to crank, press, and explore their way through America’s Industrial Revolution.
Their permanent collection of more than 200 artifacts from the booming American industries of iron, steel, textiles, and more invites visitors to witness two centuries of innovation. Much of the machinery on display is in working order thanks to the tireless efforts of the museum’s historic conservators and machinists.
Popular attractions include occasional live demonstrations of “The Big Green Machine,” a massive 1895 Corliss steam engine that rumbles to life, and the Steel Locomotive Experience, where guests can step inside a fully restored 1941 Whitcomb
narrow-gauge diesel-electric locomotive—Locomotive No. 7, affectionately known as “Tug ”—and even learn how to operate the original controls.
NMIH just released their latest Halloween-themed title, belonging to an ongoing series of children’s books featuring Tug the tow tractor. “Tug’s Trick-or-Treat” was created by museum professionals Emily Marchello and Katie Rymon, and follows the lovable orange tow tractor on an adventure when he sneaks out of the steel plant on Halloween night to go trick-or-treating.
Families can meet the real Tug in person on October 11 and 12 during the museum’s annual Steel Weekend celebration, which highlights America’s steel legacy and features free admission, family-friendly activities, as well as live demonstrations including blacksmithing and even a molten iron pour.
Curious minds of all kinds are invited to fire up their imaginations and visit the Museum year-round, Wednesday through Sunday, from 10AM–5PM

The art of custom jewelry
FOR SUSAN BELLA, custom jewelry is about honoring memories. Many heirlooms carry deep history and meaning, but aren’t always in a style that fits—sometimes too fancy or outdated. Susan thoughtfully reimagines these treasures, giving them fresh life as stylish, wearable keepsakes.
She also enjoys working closely with clients who come in with an idea, a gemstone, or simply a desire to treat themselves to a Susan Bella one-of-a-kind. Through her discovery questions, sketches, and examples, every element is refined until the design feels just right—pieces are inspired as much by her clients’ energy as by the gems themselves.
Every custom project is personal and meticulously detailed, requiring a great deal of time, collaboration, and artistry. Because of this, she only accepts a limited number of commissions and is often booked months in advance.
When inspiration strikes, Susan creates her own one-of-a-kind designs from gemstones that “speak” to her, resulting in a select few true Susan Bella Originals each year.
Designing is Susan’s passion. She’s excited about expanding her BellaMani® line, continuing to create her own unique pieces, and developing her newest innovative line of jewelry. Connect with Susan Bella Jewelry today to begin a custom jewelry journey.

Named for Marlene “Linny” Fowler—an artist, philanthropist, and lifelong advocate for the arts— the awards honor individuals and organizations whose work carries forward her legacy of creativity, equity, and access. How sleep care helped reclaim energy, health & life

JACK DOPIRA has faced a series of serious health challenges over the years, including heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer. He was hospitalized in March with sepsis—a life-threatening condition that marked a turning point in his health journey. During his treatment, Jack discovered the critical role sleep plays in overall wellness.
Following his hospital stay, Jack began a personalized treatment plan for obstructive sleep apnea at St. Luke’s Sleep Medicine. The results have been transformative. Now 70 years old, Jack wakes up feeling refreshed, tackles household chores with renewed energy, and says he feels 20 years younger. “My neighbor even calls me the Energizer Bunny,” the Summit Hill resident shared.
Expert sleep care has significantly improved Jack ’s health, underscoring
the value of a comprehensive sleep management plan through St. Luke’s Sleep Medicine.
Despite losing 55 pounds through GLP-1 therapy to address chronic health issues, Jack continued to experience fatigue and discomfort. In March, after eating a haddock dinner, he developed stomach pain and vomiting. The next morning, he lacked the energy to even shower. He drove himself to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with sepsis and required gallbladder surgery. Transferred to St. Luke’s Allentown Campus, Jack began recovery. It was nurse Bridget who noticed his oxygen levels dropped into the low 80s during sleep—a red flag that led to further evaluation.
Although Jack had used a CPAP device for five years, it wasn’t effectively improving his sleep. Jill Lechner, CRNP at St. Luke’s
Sleep Medicine, conducted a sleep study in April that confirmed obstructive sleep apnea. A second overnight study at St. Luke’s Miners Campus and consultation with neurologist and sleep medicine specialist David A. Cohen, MD, led to a revised CPAP treatment plan. The impact has been life-changing.
“Jack has been a wonderful patient to work with,” Jill said. “He is very receptive to recommendations, and I expect his outcome to be excellent, as he is very motivated to make the necessary changes to improve his health.”
Now off GLP-1 medication, Jack is working with a clinical dietitian to reach his goal weight of 225 pounds. His story highlights the importance of proactive health management.

Authentic: Corinne
BEFORE THE VINTAGE GLAM AND SOULFUL VIBES, Corinne’s journey to becoming an American jazzpop chanteuse began at Bethlehem’s Musikfest. Inspired by the artistry and varied styles she encountered there, her passion for music grew into a career shaped by years of jazz and musical theatre performances. For the past decade, she has proudly returned to perform at Musikfest every year.
“I love performing live,” Corinne beamed. “The energy and authenticity are unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. It feeds my soul!”
Her influences draw heavily from Brazilian Bossa Nova, the early 1960s genre blending jazz with rhythmic guitar.
“I’m passionate about bending genres,”
she explained. “Pop, jazz, Bossa Nova— any sound that helps me tell my story.”
That love of eclectic styles connected her with Eric Todd, Founder of iProdigy, a Grammy award–winning development program connecting artists with new fans. Their partnership led to Corinne’s upcoming album, Stories in Pink . “I’ve waited for years to find a composer who shares my passion for music and genrebending style,” Corinne said. “And I found him right here in Bethlehem!”
Stories in Pink weaves vintage essence with modern edge, creating a lush, sophisticated sound. “Eric helped me grow into the artist I always knew I could be,” Corinne said. “My goal is to tour worldwide for my album, starting and ending in Bethlehem.”
This fall, she will release the new album and take a career-defining step onto the stage at Casa Cipriani New York, an exclusive private club where A-list stars mingle. For a local artist, this is a remarkable leap onto the international stage.
A self-described late bloomer in the industry, Corinne hopes to inspire others. “My mission is to remind people that it’s never too late to achieve your dreams.”
On December 7, she’ll partner with The Children’s Home of Easton for a performance and private Q&A benefit dinner at the Musikfest Café. For tickets or to see where she’s performing next, visit corinnemusic.com.

Giving Back: Cancer Support Community of the Greater Lehigh Valley
CANCER AFFECTS MORE THAN THE PERSON DIAGNOSED family, friends, and caregivers feel its impact, too. Cancer Support Community of the Greater Lehigh Valley (CSCGLV) is a beacon of hope for anyone navigating this journey. The nonprofit offers free programs to help patients and loved ones feel connected and supported through diagnosis, treatment, remission, and beyond.
“A person’s entire world changes when they receive a diagnosis,” said James Pepe, Director of Development and Marketing. “While they focus on treatment, we focus on supporting their emotional well-being and that of their caregivers.”
CSCGLV provides counseling, support groups, art and mindfulness classes, and social programs that nurture emotional strength. Their wig salon, stocked with a variety of styles and colors, helps restore confidence for those undergoing treatment. “This place gave my mom the grace and dignity she was looking for during her diagnosis, all through a wig,” reflected Gina Stano, Executive Director. “Every woman should have that opportunity to feel the way she did.”
Every staff member, facilitator, and volunteer at CSCGLV shares a personal connection with cancer. “All of us here have a why, and it’s what makes us do the work every day,” said Gina.
“It keeps us focused on what we’re doing and why we’re doing it, so we can give everyone a positive experience.”
“Community is stronger than cancer,” added James. “The proof is in the programs we provide.”
Reaching out for help can feel daunting, but CSCGLV is ready the moment someone does. “The hardest and most important step is reaching out to us,” James said. “Once people do, we’re all in and ready to support them.”
Take that first step toward finding community. Visit cancersupportglv.org to schedule a tour, explore programs, or get involved.

New home for pain management & injury recovery
THIS FALL, Good Shepherd Rehabilitation’s expert outpatient physician team will open a brand-new, 4,700-square-foot office at Promenade Saucon Valley to help people get back to work, play, and their community.
From chronic and back pain to stroke, concussion, amputation, and brain injury recovery, Good Shepherd’s physical medicine and rehabilitation doctors, also known as physiatrists, specialize in restoring the body’s function.
“Our new location at Promenade Saucon Valley will provide centralized, convenient outpatient access for the patients and families we serve throughout the Lehigh Valley,” said Sandeep Singh, MD, FAAPMR, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs.
Located behind Red Robin, the new office will feature plenty of general and accessible parking for patients and visitors.
Good Shepherd’s outpatient Physician Group also serves adult patients in South Allentown, Wind Gap, and East Stroudsburg. Pediatric patients also receive outpatient physiatry care at Good Shepherd’s Bethlehem Campus.
Using the latest treatments and technologies, Good Shepherd’s physiatrists care for people with disabilities, as well as patients recovering from stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic injuries, chronic pain, and more.
Having a physiatrist guide recovery is like having a primary care physician who also specializes in diagnosing and treating certain musculoskeletal conditions. Physiatrists have a keen understanding of how the body works. They focus on patient goals and consider the body and mind to understand the source of patient pain, as well as limitations. Good Shepherd is accepting new patients. Get answers for pain. Regain independence. Choose Good Shepherd.
