Raise a glass, Columbia

This winter, we’re raising a glass—to the business owners, the volunteers, and community members who make Columbia shine.

Each of our city’s districts has its own flavor—from the bold and creative to the smooth and refined—and together they blend together something truly unforgettable.

Whether you’re sipping a craft cocktail in The Vista, browsing for the perfect gift on Devine Street, or discovering your new favorite restaurant in Five Points, everything you're looking for is right here in Columbia. To add a festive twist to your holiday celebrations, be sure to check out our editorial section—where you can craft your own cocktail (or mocktail!) inspired by Columbia’s most iconic neighborhoods.

As you shop this season, remember that every purchase from a local business helps fuel another dream, another job, another reason to toast our community. And when you give, consider extending that generosity to our local non-profits. Our Social Mission

Partner, Palmetto Place Children & Youth Services, is a powerful example of how generosity can directly impact the lives of those in our community.

Many are facing funding challenges, and your donation—especially when made in someone’s honor—can pour hope and help exactly where it’s needed most.

And of course, what’s winter without gathering with friends, family, and loved ones? From intimate dinners to sparkling celebrations, let’s continue to support the local vendors—the caterers, florists, photographers, and event teams—who help turn every get-together into something magical.

So here’s to the season ahead. May your glass be full, your gatherings joyful, and your giving rooted right here in Columbia.

With gratitude, BRYNLEY FARR & THE FIG COLUMBIA TEAM

GIVING

Giving

The holidays are a wonderful time to celebrate, but they’re also a meaningful time for reflection, gratitude, and generosity. This spirit shines brightest through the incredible non-profits and organizations dedicated to uplifting our community year-round. These local heroes work tirelessly behind the scenes—providing critical support, resources, and hope to neighbors in need. From shelters and youth programs to charities and community resources, their impact touches countless lives.

As you make your holiday plans, consider how you can share the gift of kindness and make a difference in someone else’s life. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading awareness, your support helps fuel the heart of Columbia and brings real change to those who need it most.

This season, keep gratitude at the center of your celebrations, and give back to the many who are working to make our community stronger, safer, and more connected.

MAKING A

Pawsitive Difference

You may know the non-profit organization Animal Mission for its spay and neuter voucher program—but that’s only part of its mission. As the official “Friend of the Shelter” for Columbia Animal Services, Animal Mission also operates the Darla Fund, an emergency medical fund that ensures no treatable illness or injury stands between a shelter animal and a second chance.

Take pup Myrtle, for example: she arrived at the shelter with a complicated condition resulting from life on the street. Thanks to the Darla Fund, she received the surgeries and rehabilitation she needed. As the holiday giving season approaches, consider being part of stories like Myrtle’s.

TOASTING TO THE

THE COLA ROSÉ SHOWER is more than an event, it’s a movement . Rooted in honoring women’s strength, sisterhood, and health, this unforgettable celebration blends fun, fashion, and philanthropy while shining a light on critical, often overlooked aspects of women’s wellness.

Founded by Deonna Wylie, the Cola Rosé Shower was born out of her decade-long battle with uterine fibroids that ultimately led to a hysterectomy. From that personal journey grew a powerful space where women feel seen,

heard, and celebrated—whether battling cancer, fibroids, endometriosis, infertility, hysterectomies, menopause, or other healthcare challenges.

On Saturday, February 7, 2026, the 5th Annual Cola Rosé Shower will light up Williams-Brice Stadium in pink for a breathtaking show of solidarity. Guests are invited to wear their favorite shade of pink, sip unlimited rosé and frosé, savor delicious bites from Southern Way Catering, and dance the day away with Shejay T.O.

Guests are encouraged to donate feminine hygiene products to support women in need. The group or organization that collects the most will be awarded the coveted Cola Rosé Trophy, which will be presented live at the event. Product donations directly benefit Sistercare Women’s Shelter and The Period Project. Whether you donate, sponsor, volunteer, or host a product drive, there are countless ways to get involved and stand with women across our community. So grab your tickets, get your pink on, and join Deonna and hundreds from across the Carolinas in celebrating women’s health and empowerment. And yes, men are encouraged to join, too!

COME FOR THE CELEBRATION. STAY FOR THE MOVEMENT. Together, let’s raise awareness, and raise our glasses!

100 YEARS of United Way

1935

In the midst of the Great Depression, the federal government suspends all funding for South Carolina— increasing the need for community-driven support.

1925

United Way first begins as the Columbia Community Chest, an organization to help fund programs for the public good.

1939

1954

The organization is renamed United Community Services and launches an annual fundraiser, the United Fund campaign.

The Columbia Community Chest is now at 1520 Assembly Street, near several offices of other charitable organizations, including Richland County Girl Scouts, the YMCA, Family Welfare Society, and many more.

1949

1937

The Columbia Community Chest is now giving funds to 11 agencies.

1958

United Community Services now gives to charitable organizations within Lexington County, in addition to its organizations in Richland County.

The Columbia Community Chest merges with two organizations—the Volunteer Office and Social Service Index of Greater Columbia and Richland County and the Council for Social Planning—and becomes known as the Greater Columbia Community Chest.

1974

The organization is now known as United Way of Richland and Lexington Counties, Inc.

PAST

This year, United Way of the Midlands is celebrating one hundred years of giving back to the community—an incredible milestone made possible by every donor and volunteer over the past century. Much has changed since United Way first opened its doors as a community chest in 1925, and yet one thing has always remained the same: the organization’s dedication to creating a better tomorrow for everyone in the Midlands.

As you peruse this timeline of United Way’s history to the modern day, you’ll find a recurring theme of the organization establishing new goals and generating forward movement. That’s because those who have spent their lives and careers supporting its mission understand that there’s always more good to give in the world.

United Way of the Midlands recently crossed the monumental finish line—raising $10 million through its Campaign for Good, matching the 2020 donation by philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. With these funds, they’ll be able to create generational change for the Midlands, making our community a more equitable, opportunity-rich place for our children.

Congratulations to United Way, and cheers to the next 100 years!

Midlands

1977

United Way of the Midlands now covers Newberry County and helps support a total of 43 partner organizations.

1976

After merging with Fairfield County United Way, the organization is now named United Way of the Midlands, which it is known by to this day.

2016

United Way of the Midlands moves to its current headquarters at 1818 Blanding Street.

2003

United Way of the Midlands further grows its reach, now covering Calhoun and Orangeburg counties.

2018

1978

After moving around to several buildings in downtown Columbia, United Way of the Midlands moves to 1800 Main Street, where several of its partner organizations will also be based.

2020

Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott gives a historic donation of $10 million, prompting United Way of the Midlands to launch the Campaign for Good.

The organization’s annual impact is measured to be almost $17 million, given to 60 Community Impact Partners.

2025

United Way of the Midlands announces the successful completion of the Campaign for Good, paving the way to create generational change for the entire Midlands community.

PRESENT

At Watkins-Nance Elementary School and more schools across the Midlands, girls are getting hands-on experience in all things STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) like never before. United Way created the Midlands Reading Consortium (MRC) to improve literacy rates in community schools, providing children with one-on-one instruction and fostering a love for reading. In 2021, the initiative responded to lagging science and math scores by creating an all-new STEM component to their work. Now, girls across the Midlands can experience real-world lessons with after school programs designed to unlock the opportunities of STEM.

Want to make a difference? Scan the QR code to learn how you can support programs like MRC through donations or volunteering.

Students pictured at the Watkins-Nance BLAST afterschool program.

FUTURE

Since 2022, United Way of the Midlands has invested more than $5.5 million in affordable housing initiatives, leveraging more than $83 million in total project costs and creating or repairing 548 housing units. In 2024, United Way of the Midlands announced they are joining forces with several other community organizations— including the Mental Illness Recovery Center, Inc. (MIRCI), the SC Housing Authority, the Central Carolina Community Foundation, and more—to establish a transitional housing program for young, unhoused women. Millwood Pointe will house girls and women from the ages of 17 to 22 for eighteen months, providing a safe environment, extensive mental health resources, and community support. Once open, United Way knows Millwood Pointe will be a vital resource for Columbia and a true example of community partnership.

Social Mission Palmetto Place Children & Youth Services

As winter’s chill settles into Columbia and we gear up for a season of joy, hosting, and celebrating with loved ones, it’s important to remember that this time of year is also critical for unsheltered children and teens in our Midlands community.

Palmetto Place Children & Youth Services is an invaluable resource, providing everything from a warm bed, clothing, and school supplies to hot meals and a safe environment where unsheltered youth can feel at home. Winter can be an especially vulnerable time for children without guardians— and Palmetto Place steps in, without hesitation, to lend a helping hand.

“There are added layers of difficulty for youth without stable support and housing,” explains Damien Talley, Palmetto Place’s new executive director.

It’s not just the colder weather that makes this season more demanding for the organization.

“Increased needs around mental health, the isolation of being out of school, lack of reliable transportation, and limited access to proper clothing all become significant barriers to a healthy and safe life. We work to close those gaps as much as possible. The youth who come to us are like our extended family—we don’t want them to just survive this season, but thrive in it,” says Damien.

For the staff and volunteers, building trust with their residents is an important first step in ensuring a healthy, positive journey at Palmetto Place.

“When our residents realize that it’s more than a shelter—that it’s a community where they are valued—it unlocks their

confidence and their sense of peace and belonging,” Damien adds.

The team at Palmetto Place is dedicated to creating structure, safety, and love. They celebrate every victory, big or small— whether it’s passing a test or getting a first job. It’s more than just a roof over a child’s head—their programs focus on the whole child, from safety and education to life skills and emotional well-being.

“A lot of residents come to us with nothing but the clothes on their back,” explains Damien. “Every teen and young adult who walks through our doors is met with compassion and possibility. It’s more than a safe haven—it’s a launching pad for youth to build their lives.”

There are many ways to support Palmetto Place this season and into the new year—whether by donating your time, money, or essential supplies like socks, winter coats, personal hygiene items, or paper goods. No contribution is too small.

“When you invest in Palmetto Place, you’re investing in our youth—who will grow up and become leaders in our community,” says Damien. “We work to build resilience in our mission and in our residents, so we can continue to impact the next generation who come to us for help.”

As we reflect on what it means to give and gather this season, let’s not overlook the young people in our community who need a place to feel safe, seen, and supported. Palmetto Place is doing the work—day in and day out—to ensure no child is left out in the cold.

Stocked with care

Every child deserves to feel seen, safe, and supported. Midlands Orphan Relief is dedicated to uplifting children across the Midlands who are facing the unimaginable—neglect, abandonment, and abuse. Through carefully assembled care kits, filled with clothing, books, hygiene items, stuffed animals, and more, they offer more than just basic necessities. They provide comfort, dignity, and a powerful reminder that someone cares. This holiday season, you can be part of that moment of hope and joy. By joining the Stocking Drive alongside the MOR team, you’re helping to fill care kits that bring warmth and light into some of a child’s darkest days. Whether you choose to donate supplies, contribute financially, or give your time, your support makes a lasting impact—helping children feel seen, valued, and most of all, loved.

SISTER to SISTER

As any member of the Sistercare team will tell you, leaving a partner is the most dangerous time for someone experiencing domestic violence. It takes an unimaginable level of strength and courage to leave—just as it takes an extraordinary amount of community support and resources to help survivors regain safety, independence, and their sense of self. Sistercare offers comprehensive, wraparound services for survivors and their children. They help women, men, and all victims to recognize when they’re in an abusive relationship, make a plan to leave, and then to start a new chapter for themselves and their families. CEO Leah Wicevic and her steadfast team cannot do it alone. This holiday season, consider donating to Sistercare and giving the gift of a brighter tomorrow to someone in need.

Sistercare also has many opportunities for those interested in volunteering. Visit sistercare.org to sign up and learn more!

Give the gift of joy

This holiday season, help bring the gift of JOY to families during their most critical and challenging times. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Columbia, SC, a non-profit organization located directly beside Prisma Health Children's Hospital, serves as a "home away from home" for families who have children receiving critical care at local hospitals.

Your year-end gift ensures that the needs of these families are met, so their sole focus can be on the care and treatment of their child: a warm meal, cozy bed, and priceless family moments. Last year, RMHC Columbia, SC saved its families over $1.1 million in lodging, food, and transportation.

Be part of their impact and help them keep families close during their most difficult days.

Authentic Joel Lourie

To this issue’s Fig Authentic, Joel Lourie, philanthropy is simple. It’s about “seeing needs and taking action,” whether that’s through a monetary donation, volunteering, or civic leadership.

Joel enacted this philosophy throughout his 18-year tenure in the South Carolina State Legislature, following in the footsteps of his father, Senator Isadore Lourie, who advocated for working people and built a bridge between Black and White communities during the Civil Rights Movement. Both his father and his mother, Susan—who was incredibly active in the community in her own right—shaped Joel’s outlook on public engagement and the tremendous impact even just one person can make.

During his own time in the state legislature, Joel put in the work—treating his role as a true office job. He showed up at the South Carolina State House each day, working a nine-tofive and leading the charge on several bills aimed at creating lasting change: increasing insurance coverage on treatments for children with autism, mandating the use of seatbelts in vehicles, and reducing instances of underage smoking and drinking.

When he felt that chapter was complete, he began the next, founding Lourie Life & Health. With offices in Greenville, Columbia, and Myrtle Beach, LLH connects South Carolinians with a wide range of health insurance, life insurance, and Medicare plans. Always local and free from pressure, Joel and his team are ethically bound to work in their clients’ best

interests at no cost to them—and Joel wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Lourie Life and Health, to me, is just an extension of my work in the legislature,” Joel says. There, he continues his legacy of creating affordable access to health insurance, all the while giving back to the community through their company volunteer program, Lourie Lends a Hand.

For the past three years, the LLH team has visited a South Carolina non-profit each month, putting in several hours of work wherever they’re needed. The group rotates each month, with several members from different divisions within the company taking a paid day out of the office to volunteer.

Over the years, they’ve volunteered everywhere from the Palmetto Place Children & Youth Services (our 2025 Social Mission) to the Ronald McDonald House and United Ministries in Greenville. Joel’s only criteria for selecting participating non-profits: “Where can we take half a dozen people and make a difference?”

Lourie Life & Health donates to over 50 non-profits across South Carolina annually, but to Joel, the Lourie Lends a Hand program is just as important as a financial donation. "I think it’s important to give more than just money; to give time, to give work, to be ambassadors for this non-profit community.” he shares.

Whether he’s serving in the South Carolina State Senate or leading his company, Joel does just that every single day.

Your team, for life

Like many businesses in Columbia, Lourie Life & Health is at its busiest around the holiday season. With Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period from October 15 to December 7, and the Health Insurance Marketplace’s between November 1 and January 15, this team is constantly on the move—meeting new people, talking through their health insurance options, and providing meaningful insights based on LLH’s signature training and experience. Committed to serving their clients’ best interests, Joel Lourie and his team’s services are entirely free to you. They’re your resource for navigating an oftencomplex world of insurance and regulations, all through grounded, beneficial help and a friendly atmosphere. If you have any questions during the ongoing enrollment periods, their team is more than happy to help you!

A toast to COLUMBIA

Winter is such a special season in Columbia, the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another for our city. As we reminisce over all the wonderful non-profit and small business stories of 2025, let's raise a glass to the place we call home—and all the dreams and wonders we hope 2026 will bring.

Inspired by iconic Columbia neighborhoods and the small businesses that make them thrive, these cocktails are a perfect, bubbly addition to cap off a fun, Cola-based gathering. Happy sipping!

Main Street Manhattan

A classic for a reason, we're pairing the quintessential metropolitan cocktail with the heart of Columbia. Strong and smooth, this drink evokes all the things we love about Main Street: skyscrapers, glowing streetlights, and a fast pace that speaks to forward movement.

INGREDIENTS

Two parts rye whiskey (or bourbon, if you prefer it a bit sweeter)

• One part sweet vermouth • Two to three dashes of Angostura bitters • Shake with ice and top with a maraschino cherry or a twist of an orange peel!

The Devine Street Cranberry Couture

Brimming with holiday spirit, this cranberry mimosa calls to mind brunches on Devine followed by Saturday afternoons spent shopping the sales.

INGREDIENTS

Three parts sparkling wine (champagne or prosecco) • One part cranberry juice • Optional: Add a half-ounce of orange liquor to enhance the mimosa flavor!

Make it a mocktail: Simply swap the prosecco for sparkling grape juice or your favorite sparkling water!

The WeCo Whiskey

Just as chill, distinct, and rich with flavor as West Columbia, this whiskey and coke cocktail celebrates all the vibes of the River District. We recommend using South Carolina's own Six & Twenty Whiskey for the base!

INGREDIENTS

One part whiskey • Two to three parts Coca-Cola • Pour over ice and add a lime wedge or a twist to garnish!

Make it a mocktail: Replace the whiskey and vermouth with cranberry and orange juices, and add a dash of lemon juice to replace the bitters. Make it a mocktail: Keep it simple with Coca-Cola and a twist of lime.

The Vista Midnight Martini

Sweet and indulgent, an espresso martini brings a jolt of energy to every night out in the Vista. For all the Kaminsky's lovers, this one's for you!

INGREDIENTS

Two parts vodka • One part espresso • One part Kahlúa • Half-ounce of simple syrup • Shake with ice and garnish with three coffee beans!

Make it a mocktail: Leave out the vodka and coffee liqueur, and add your favorite creamer.

Dark & Sandstormy in Five Points

For our most college-centric neighborhood, it only feels right to mix an elevated take on a classic game day drink. Chilled vodka, ginger beer, and fresh-squeezed lime juice create a brighter version of a dark & stormy.

INGREDIENTS

Two to three parts ginger beer • One part vodka • Half-ounce of fresh lime juice • Pour over crushed ice, and garnish with a lime wedge or a sprig of mint!

Make it a mocktail: Leave out the vodka for a delicious, alcohol-free drink.

The Forest Acres Spiced Pine

Nothing says “holiday cheer” like a perfectly spiced mulled wine to warm you up after a brisk afternoon of shopping. This festive favorite nods to the beautiful pine trees and cozy charm that Forest Acres is known for.

INGREDIENTS

One bottle of red wine (dry or semi-dry, like merlot or cabernet sauvignon) • One orange (sliced, plus extra for garnish) • Eight whole cloves • Two to three cinnamon sticks • Three to four star anise • A quarter cup of sugar or honey • Half a cup of water or brandy • Optional: a few cardamom pods or a splash of vanilla extract for added flavor.

Make it a mocktail: Leave out the wine and use apple cider instead!

Every day, HUB’s employees live out their promise to protect their communities by tailoring insurance products and services to their clients’ unique needs and risks. In the pursuit of serving their local communities, HUB created HUB GIVES, a full day once a year dedicated to volunteering and encouraging employees to donate their time, creativity, passion, and connections to local community projects that provide real help, from fighting disease and working with families in need to improving the lives of senior citizens and youth. As we look toward 2026, we’re raising a glass to the dreamers, doers, and difference-makers who make our community shine. From new brands taking their first leap to established businesses redefining what’s next—we’re honored to help tell your story through thoughtful design, compelling messaging, and creative strategies that actually work.

HERE’S OUR BUSINESS TIP FOR THE NEW YEAR:

Your brand isn’t just your logo—it’s the feeling people have when they think of you. In 2026, focus on consistency: make sure your website, social media, and marketing materials all speak the same visual language. And when people enter your physical business, that same feeling, look, and energy should greet them. That’s what builds trust— and trust builds sales.

Whether you need a fresh brand identity, a custom website, or a strategy to elevate your social media and marketing, our team is here to help achieve your 2026 goals.

Beyond the business world, we love creating personal stationery that feels timeless, tangible, and uniquely yours. Every piece is designed to be heirloom quality, crafted for life’s most meaningful moments.

To those we haven’t met yet, we can’t wait to help you make 2026 your most successful year yet.
