Our culinary landscape is equally inviting, with restaurants crafting new comfort dishes that promise to wrap visitors in warmth. This issue highlights perfect spots for a winter gathering with friends and family, including the inviting ambiance at Porters’ Pub in Easton and the dining experiences at Wind Creek Bethlehem.

We’re also proud to spotlight local nonprofits making an impact in our region. Organizations such as New Bethany, Second Harvest Food Bank, Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley, Mikayla’s Voice, Meals on Wheels, The Junior League, and many others are doing incredible work, creating a community spirit that truly embodies the season of giving.

Celebrating Beauty, Supporting Community

ANDREA LEE, owner of A-List Salon, is excited to launch the inaugural Lehigh Valley Hair Showcase on March 30, 2025, from 1-4 PM at The Wind Creek Event Center. This event, co-founded with Joel Goyco of East Coast Hair Co. and Alison Leigh of Eskandalo!, aims to unite local beauty professionals in a celebration of artistry and collaboration. “I’ve always wanted to create something that brings our industry together,” Andrea said.

Featuring up to 20 salons, the event promises an exciting, fashion-week-style production filled with creative hairstyles, music, food, and drinks. Best of all, 100% of the net proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Bethlehem, supporting its mission to help local children reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens. This organization holds special significance for Andrea and played a pivotal role in her childhood.

All the salon participants will prepare up to five models, demonstrating their passion for hair and commitment to a cause close to their hearts. “It takes a community to raise a child,” said Andrea, emphasizing the impact of the funds collected for the Boys & Girls Club.

Tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available at lvhairshowcase.com. For updates, follow @lvhairshowcase on Facebook and Instagram.

ALTHOUGH JOSEPH “JOE” AND ROSEANNE “PENNY” BEIDLER spent their lives traveling the world, nothing was more important to them than helping to make quality health care available to members of their community. Upon their deaths, their estate gift of $1.5 million to St. Luke’s University Health Network (SLUHN) is now helping to ensure that graduate students and clinical leaders can begin and sustain their medical educations.

The Joseph and Roseanne “Penny” Beidler Endowed Scholarship Fund provides $1 million for scholarships to students attending Temple/St. Luke’s School of Medicine and other academic programs or affiliations created by the school’s leadership.

“Thanks to the generosity of the Beidlers, we can address the high cost of tuition and loan debt our students experience by supporting them financially through their medical journey,” said Shaden T. Eldakar-Hein, MD, MS, Senior Associate Dean, Temple/St. Luke’s School of Medicine. “This also provides access to students who may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend and inspires other students of similar backgrounds to aspire to become physicians.”

A gift of $500,000 established The Joseph R. & Roseanne Y. Beidler Medical Education Lecture Endowment Fund to support periodic talks, seminars, and workshops for students and practicing clinicians given by noted clinical leaders and visiting scholars. It will help stimulate advances in care across numerous specialties by supporting the professional development of current residents.

“The Beidlers truly understood the value of medical education that keeps our students and care providers current and stimulated, and that keeps the best providers at SLUHN who bring their advanced knowledge directly to their patients,” said James P. Orlando, Ed.D, Chief Graduate Medical Education Officer.

For Joe and Penny, the Lehigh Valley was always home and investing there was personal. They selected several local charities to include in their estate plan but, according to Penny, “It was important to us that St. Luke’s continue to receive our support when we are no longer around so they can continue to do the excellent work they do every day.”

A SouthSide Bethlehem Music Haven

FOUNDED IN 1976 by local musician

Dave Fry, Godfrey Daniels Listening Room has become a beloved fixture in SouthSide Bethlehem’s music scene. Named after a W.C. Fields euphemism, the venue was created to offer artists an intimate, supportive space to share their stories through song. Over the years, Godfrey Daniels has hosted legendary acts like Ani DiFranco, David Bromberg, and Doc Watson, while launching the career of John Gorka through its renowned open mics.

A charming tradition at the venue is the use of “wooden nickels,” handed out with each ticket purchase. Worth 50 cents at the snack bar, these tokens never expire and can be collected and used at future shows, with many guests bringing back nickels from years past.

Current events at Godfrey Daniels include a diverse lineup of performances from local and touring musicians, along with workshops and open mics. In an era of digital entertainment, Godfrey Daniels stands as a testament to the enduring power of live music and human connection. Its mission goes beyond entertainment, fostering a community where artists can thrive and audiences can experience the magic of live performance. Today, it remains one of the longest-running acoustic music venues in the country.

Visit godfreydaniels.org to discover their full calendar of upcoming live performances and events.

A Heavenly Christmas

THE BACH CHOIR’S CHRISTMAS CONCERTS explore the heavenly firmament through the music of Bach and Philadelphia composer Kile Smith. They begin with Bach’s Cantata Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern, BWV 1 ( How Brightly Shines the Morning Star ), based on a Philipp Nicolai hymn reverently known as the “Queen of Chorales.” Virtuosic vocals and the warmth of French horns combine with a shimmering violin obbligato in Bach’s response to this evocative text and regal melody.

A profoundly moving accompanying piece, Smith’s The Consolation of Apollo , captures the awe of the Apollo 8 crew as they witnessed the Earth rise over the moon as shared in a historic 1968 Christmas Eve broadcast. Weaving passages from Genesis and lunar radio transmissions, this illuminating work exudes glimmering choral textures and sparkling percussion.

Celebrating the inscription of the Moravian Church Settlement to the UNESCO World Heritage List, the choir will debut a Moravian hymn text composed by Smith as part of the choir’s Carol Commission Project.

At the concert’s conclusion, the audience is invited to sing carols with the choir, offering a joyful and cherished celebration of the Lehigh Valley’s Christmas season.

The Bach Choir of Bethlehem invites community members to experience these infectiously joyful performances that are a cherished part of the Lehigh Valley’s Christmas season.

So Many Peaks, All in One Valley

LEHIGH VALLEY continues to soar to new heights in 2024, earning accolades that highlight the region’s growing appeal. Bethlehem was named one of the “Top 100 Best Places to Live” by Livability.com for its third consecutive year. Allentown’s West End Theatre District was highlighted as one of “America’s Most Underrated Nightlife Neighborhoods” by Wealth of Geeks, while Easton earned a spot on WorldAtlas’ list of the best downtowns in Pennsylvania.

The region’s real estate market also shines, with Realtor.com ranking local zip codes among the nation’s hottest for the last four years: 18062 in Macungie, 18064 in Nazareth, and 18017 and 18018 in Bethlehem. The Lehigh Valley was lauded for its close-knit communities, scenic surroundings, unique festivals such as Das Awkscht Fescht car show and Musikfest, and rich historical landmarks, which now include a UNESCO World Heritage site. The 18-to-34 age group has grown nearly three percent since 2020, with Northampton County ranked among the Top 100 U.S. counties for growth in this demographic. Additionally, Site Selection magazine ranked Lehigh Valley as the number one mid-sized market for economic development in the country, and employment is at a record high.

Authentic: Katie P. Desiderio

KATIE P. DESIDERIO is a passionate advocate for personal growth and leadership, dedicated to helping others realize their potential.

As a professor at Moravian University and co-author of The Beekeeper: Pollinating Your Organization for Transformative Growth , she inspires audiences to step out of their comfort zones and confidently embrace the challenges associated with personal development.

At the core of Katie’s work is the belief that mindfulness and self-reflection drive personal and professional growth.

“Many people think leadership begins with a title or managing a team,” Katie explained. “However, true leadership starts with self-understanding.

What we dedicate our time and energy to is what flourishes.”

Her journey as an educator inspired her to collaborate with her growth partner Michael Frino on a book designed to cultivate leaders. Using the metaphor of bees as pollinators, they draw parallels between the way bees contribute to the hive and how individuals can spark growth and change in their own lives.

“Writing a leadership fable pushed us outside our comfort zone,” Katie admitted. “However, we aimed to encourage readers to embrace discomfort, approach leadership with a beginner’s mindset, and cultivate curiosity, along with a readiness to learn and unlearn.”

Through her role at Moravian University and her writing, Katie is a champion for change, inspiring others to lead with authenticity. “I struggled in my own leadership journey, often trying to emulate others. It was only when I embraced being authentically myself and recognized that ‘I am me’ that I began to see endless possibilities,” she reflected.

Katie and Michael’s next book in their leadership series, The Stargazer: Unleashing the Brilliance of Building Brighter Teams, is available for pre-order on Amazon and will debut in March 2025. Their Wall Street Journal bestseller, The Beekeeper, makes an impactful gift and a powerful investment in personal leadership development.

UWGLV focuses on key areas such as education, food access, emergency services, and healthy aging, ensuring children have resources to succeed, families have access to nutritious meals, and older adults live independently with dignity.

BSI prides itself on being a for-profit company with a nonprofit heart. BSI employees have contributed countless hours to initiatives like Day of Caring, where teams engage in service projects for local nonprofits. Together with United Way, BSI aims to create a future where individuals and families feel safe, supported, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.

Yes, Chef!

BEHIND THE APRON

PHOTOGRAPHER ELAINE ZELKER recognized the talent and heart of her community reflected in the local chefs. Inspired by their creativity and dedication, Elaine embarked on an ambitious project to highlight their talents. The result? “Yes, Chef! Behind the Apron,” a unique portrait series and official calendar celebrating the artistry, passion, and skill of Lehigh Valley culinary masters.

Through months of secret photoshoots, community voting, and social media teasers, Elaine captured the personalities of chefs responsible for the region's beloved restaurants. Each portrait blends sophistication, allure, and a touch of playfulness, offering a glimpse into the character and story behind each apron.

The highly-anticipated unveiling of the calendar and chef portraits will take place during a celebration at The Club at Twin Lakes in Allentown on Tuesday, December 10. Attendees will enjoy an exclusive first look at the gallery of chef portraits, the 2025 calendar of chefs and their recipes, light bites, a cash bar, raffles, and more. The evening promises to be a must-see event for the entire community.

In addition to honoring these local culinary artists, “Yes, Chef! Behind the Apron” also serves a greater purpose. All proceeds from the calendar sales and event are being donated to Second Harvest Food Bank, supporting their critical efforts to combat food insecurity in the community.

THE DEDICATED TEAM at Second Harvest Food Bank works tirelessly every day to distribute nearly 13.2 million meals annually to neighbors in need. Meet two leaders who play crucial roles in ensuring local pantries, soup kitchens, and partner agencies can effectively serve the community.

Leslie Avecillas, Agency Relations Coordinator for Lehigh and Northampton Counties, provides essential support and technical assistance to partner agencies. Many of the pantries she assists are operated entirely by volunteers who generously donate their time and energy. Leslie also offers invaluable emotional support to pantry directors as they navigate daily challenges.

“Working in agency relations at a food bank makes me feel impactful and collaborative, knowing I am strengthening our partnerships with agencies to enhance food distribution and community health,” Leslie said.

Mackensie Kirchner , Community Programs Coordinator, manages the Service Insights program, a free platform provided by Feeding America. This tool helps pantries track clients receiving food through The Emergency Food Assistance Program, funded by the USDA. Mackensie’s work with the platform streamlines operations for volunteers and makes it easier for pantries to serve their clients.

“It’s a humbling and rewarding experience to see the direct impact of innovative practices on the community, knowing that every effort contributes to a healthier, more equitable food system,” Mackensie said.

Together, Leslie and Mackensie are part of a larger vision: a hunger-free Lehigh Valley. Support Second Harvest Food Bank’s mission by donating to help end hunger today.

“Before we knew it, food vouchers were sent to our hospital room; we had gas gift cards to help with the trips back and forth to CHOP; we had grocery store gift cards for buying dinner when cooking was one thing too much for the day... Knowing we are so supported by this organization, along with our village of friends and family, has helped us be strong and present for Sam.”

Giving Back: Joshway

AFTER THE TRAGIC LOSS OF HIS BROTHER, David Robertson transformed his grief into a force for good by founding Joshway, a nonprofit honoring his brother’s legacy by empowering youth to learn, inspire, and lead.

At its heart, Joshway is dedicated to nurturing Lehigh Valley’s next generation of creative talent, guiding future leaders to discover their strengths and potential. Through collaborations with local organizations such as El Sistema and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Allentown and Bethlehem, Joshway provides innovative programs that build technical skills and instill confidence in children and teens throughout the region.

Joshway’s programs harness the positive potential of technology while addressing its challenges. “With my background in tech, we saw an opportunity to show kids that technology can be a healthy and constructive tool,” David said. Through recent events at the Apple Store, participants learned coding, music production, and graphic design, gaining valuable skills and confidence to face future challenges.

The experiences offered through Joshway’s programs inspire youth to envision futures they may not have thought possible. “They are the future leaders, and it’s essential they tap into that potential,” David said. “Joshway is dedicated to unlocking opportunities and cultivating competencies so that

participants can confidently lead and teach their communities.”

Looking ahead, Joshway is excited to expand its offerings with new programs in financial literacy, mindfulness, sports, and nutrition. Additionally, the organization has established a scholarship fund at Northampton Community College (NCC) to support students aspiring to further their education.

Donors “Give Back” to support St. Luke’s Nurse-Family Partnership Program

THIS YEAR , the St. Luke’s NurseFamily Partnership (NFP) program reached several milestones in its mission of providing home visitation support to families affected by social and economic inequality. The program is celebrating its 23rd year supporting families in Lehigh and Northampton counties.

“Our specially trained nurses visited over 440 mothers from early in pregnancy through the first two years of the child’s life,” said Tiffany Grabinski, MSN, RN, Director, Maternal Child Programs.

“We believe this is a truly wonderful program. The stress of a newborn is significant and unfortunately most of us have no training in how to handle a baby’s arrival and first two years.

The help and support of the program’s nurses make a huge difference both to the mother and newborn child,” noted Peter and Odete Kelly, long-time supporters of the NFP program.

In addition, NFP is in its first year of launching the Moving Beyond Depression (MBD) model as an additional resource to support maternal mental health.

So far, the MBD program alone saw 70% of the mothers who completed the program no longer meeting the criteria for depression, and 80% of the mothers surveyed reported decreased parenting stress.

“Our NFP program is funded to mentor 300 families at any given time,” said Tiffany. “Last year, we saw a 30%

increase in referrals, more than 1,000 families in need of our support.”

“At Two Rivers Health & Wellness Foundation, we are proud to support the Nurse-Family Partnership. Through St. Luke’s evidence-based initiative, they are investing in brighter futures for our community’s most vulnerable families. Together, we are ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive and every mother feels supported during this critical time of life,” said Daniel McMahon, Vice President.
