From Music Teacher and Conductor to Med School Student

AT AGE 39, KELLY RICCIO IS FOLLOWING HER DREAMS as a student at Temple/St. Luke’s School of Medicine. The average age of a U.S. medical student is around 24, but this wife and mother of three sees age as no issue as she pursues a bright new future.

The Temple/St. Luke’s School of Medicine at St. Luke’s University Hospital in Fountain Hill is the Lehigh Valley’s first and only four-year medical school, where the region’s brightest minds go to become doctors. By cultivating home-grown medical talent, such as Riccio, who has deep roots in the Greater Lehigh Valley, St. Luke’s is helping the region to secure its health and well-being amid a worsening doctor shortage nationally.

As a child, Riccio played her family’s physician, donning a white coat and “listening” to hearts at home with her plastic stethoscope. But when the resident of Gilbertsville in Montgomery County wasn’t acting out her fantasy, she was practicing her clarinet, piano, or singing.

As an undergraduate, Riccio followed her quest of becoming a performing musician and music teacher. After earning her bachelor’s in music education and a master’s in conducting, she taught for twelve years, first in the Allentown and East Penn School Districts, then at Lehigh Valley Academy RCS, a Bethlehembased public charter school.

But in the back of her mind was her vision of caring for the ill or injured as a St. Luke’s doctor. In 2019, instead of pursuing a doctorate in conducting, she opted to begin working towards obtaining a Doctor of Medicine degree. Fast forward to 2023, Riccio finds the training stimulating and demanding, if not a bit daunting being around her younger classmates—one of whom, Rana Moawad, age 22 and a second-year medical student, she taught as a high schooler at Lehigh Valley Academy!

“I loved teaching and performing music, and I’m sure I’ll love being a doctor,” said Ricco, who still plays the piano, mostly to de-stress and entertain her family.

St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital: Designed for Kids

ST. LUKE’S UNIVERSITY HEALTH NETWORK IN JUNE ANNOUNCED THE OPENING OF ST. LUKE’S CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL based at the Network’s Bethlehem Campus in Fountain Hill.

“St. Luke’s is the first established hospital in the Lehigh Valley and has been caring for children for the 150 years since its founding in 1872,” St. Luke’s President and CEO Richard A. Anderson said at the time. “This new children’s hospital designation recognizes the incredible depth of pediatric expertise developed across our network over its long and storied history, including an array of specialty services added in recent years.”

The announcement was the culmination of a coordinated, years-long effort to reorganize pediatric care under the concept of a children’s hospital.

In 2020, St. Luke’s Bethlehem Campus added a $5 million, 8-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), which provides advanced care to critically ill children.

In 2022, St. Luke’s 17-bed pediatric inpatient unit was renovated and relocated to include 24/7 hospitalist coverage, support from pediatric trained respiratory therapists, and specialty trained pediatric nurses, pharmacists, and pediatric surgeons.

Also new in 2022: St. Luke’s Pediatric Specialty Center, conveniently located at 5425 Lanark Road off Route 309 near I-78. The center is the region’s first and only free-standing facility dedicated entirely to children, allowing families to coordinate multiple specialty appointments in the same day at one convenient location.

At St. Luke’s the focus is on children. This focus is reflected in the award-winning designs that provide an environment that is both safe and resonates with many children’s interests. These designs feature colorful undersea, land, and outer space themes that allow caregivers the opportunity to interact with both the child’s caregiver and the child in a very relaxed and comforting environment.

AT 14,000 SQUARE FEET, SPA AT WIND CREEK is a full-service salon featuring ultra-luxe amenities including a cryotherapy room, relaxation pools, swinging chairs over a wading pool, nail spa, infrared saunas, aromatherapy steam rooms, and breathtaking views of Bethlehem.

Designed in partnership between Wind Creek Hospitality’s top in-house architects and a leading spa consultant, the spa’s design is as intentional as its primary offerings and amenities. Natural elements contrast with glamorous finishes—balancing an aura of opulence and nature.

Upon entry, Spa at Wind Creek’s lobby captivates the eye with a lavish beaded wall-covering and a custom light fixture fitted with white and gold leaves—sitting in front of a lush, green backdrop. Evoking elegance through luxe velvets and textures, Spa at Wind Creek’s touch of modern deco pays homage to the property’s rich Bethlehem Steel history.

Hope in Flight

HOPE IN FLIGHT IS BETHLEHEM’S LATEST PERMANENT ART INSTALLATION and its very first mosaic stair mural. It is a colorful collage of porcelain tiles jam packed with vibrant imagery of birds, flowers, and music. Local artists and school teachers Tiffany Anderson (Donegan Elementary School, South Bethlehem) and Carla Majczan (East Hills Middle School, North Bethlehem) conceived the idea for Hope in Flight with the help of the SouthSide community and their school communities.

They engaged in conversations and polled local residents, families, and students about the imagery that should be included in the mural and what kind of art folks wanted to see in their neighborhood.

“When working together to come up with an overlying theme, we thought about our schools and the communities around them… The images we chose symbolize our theme and focus on hope,” Anderson commented. “The flowers and colors were chosen to symbolize many of the cultures found in Bethlehem. Birds represent flight and movement, similar to how the Southside was formed. The piano keys are representative of the rich musical culture that continues to grow throughout Bethlehem. The rainbow represents beauty, hope, and acceptance for all which is what, as teachers in Bethlehem, we want all of our students and the members of the community to see and feel.”

Over several months, Tiffany and Carla broke, cut, arranged, adhered,

and ultimately transformed tiles into mosaic panels with the help of volunteers from their school families. In July 2023, they installed and weatherproofed the panels onto a centrally located staircase which connects the local neighborhood to the South Bethlehem Greenway walking and biking trail as well as the Bethlehem Skateplaza.

This public art project is part of the Bethlehem Economic Development Corporation’s SouthSide Art District Program, a continuous revitalization initiative for the SouthSide of Bethlehem. This project was made possible, in part, by funds from the County of Northampton PA, and SouthSide Tomorrow. SouthSide Tomorrow is a 6-year revitalization program of Community Action Development Bethlehem and the City of Bethlehem with support from Univest Bank & Trust Co., Embassy Bank for the Lehigh Valley, People’s Security Bank & Trust, PPL Electric Utilities, and Provident Bank.

A Journey of Resilience, Passion, and Literary Ambition

Fig Authentic: Chaz Hayden

CHAZ HAYDEN’S LIFE IS A TESTAMENT TO RESILIENCE, DETERMINATION, AND UNWAVERING STRENGTH.

Raised in New Jersey and diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy at the young age of three months, Chaz has defied odds and expectations to live an extraordinary life. Where medical experts doubted his survival, his mother’s relentless advocacy shaped his outlook on life.

Beginning his mobility journey with a powered wheelchair at two years old, Chaz never let his disability define him. Instead, he embraced life with full throttle, taking on challenges, battling illnesses, surgeries, and emerging

stronger each time. Sports played an essential role in his family, and though physically limited, he mentally mastered the games, turning apparent obstacles into intriguing puzzles to solve.

Chaz’s education path was unconventional; he started college at 15 and graduated with a finance degree from the University of Arizona at 18. His ambition led him to intern for the football team and later land a finance job in New Jersey. However, it was during the transition between studies and professional life that Chaz discovered his passion for writing. Crafting stories reflecting friendship, love, and experiences like his own, he worked diligently to hone

his skills as a writer. His debut novel, “The First Thing About You,” published in September 2022, marks an exciting step in his literary journey.

Most recently, Chaz has partnered with The PEAK TV, a local newsmagazine show, to spread awareness about living with a disability and showcase accessibility around the Lehigh Valley. His positive outlook and passion for storytelling are a compelling combination that makes him an exciting voice in the literary world. Whether riding in his “sick wheelchair” or enjoying his favorite chicken nuggets, Chaz’s energy and creativity set a vibrant example for many. Learn more at chazhayden.com.

Fathers and Sons Help Bolster Health Care in Rural Region

MARK FEGLEY, MD, IS FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF HIS FATHER AND GRANDFATHER, providing vital health services to the northern reaches of the St. Luke’s University Health Network.

“It’s pretty remarkable that I work at the two hospitals where my dad and grandfather were passionate about expanding rural healthcare access,” said Dr. Fegley, a St. Luke’s critical care and anesthesiology physician at its St. Luke’s Carbon and Miners campuses, among other locations.

Dr. Fegley was a member of the first class of the Temple/ St. Luke’s School of Medicine, which graduated in 2015. The medical school, at St. Luke’s University Hospital in Fountain Hill, is the Lehigh Valley’s first and only four-year medical school. He returned to St. Luke’s after completing a four-year residency in critical care and anesthesiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

The 37-year-old resident of Center Valley shares his elders’ passion for improving health services access in those areas that historically suffered from a dearth of advanced medical

services. These are being remedied since St. Luke’s rescued the struggling Blue Mountain Health System in 2018, and Coaldale Hospital (renamed St. Luke’s Miners Campus) in 2000.

William Fegley, Jr., Dr. Fegley’s father, who was born nearby and lived in Tamaqua for many of his pre-college years, has long been a supporter of the Carbon County community as a businessman and 13-year board member of Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital. He’s now a trustee of the new St. Luke’s Carbon Campus, which he calls “a godsend” for the health of the community.

Dr. Fegley’s grandfather, William Fegley, Sr. was born and spent most of his life in Tamaqua. As a longtime member of the Lions Club there, he was instrumental in bringing advanced medical services to Coaldale Hospital after it was turned over to the community by the state. He spent five years as its board chairman following its merger with St. Luke’s University Health Network in 2000.

He passed away in St. Luke’s Miners Campus in 2015, where a room was named for him in honor of his service there.

Lehigh Valley Ranked #2 Nationwide in Development Projects

LEHIGH VALLEY’S PROXIMITY to consumers and its plethora of skilled workers made it one of the most popular places in the country for businesses to open or expand in 2022.

The region had the second-most projects completed or announced among mid-sized regions (population 200,000 to 1 million), according to Site Selection Magazine.

The new projects included expansions such as B. Braun Medical’s $200 million investment that doubled the size of its manufacturing facility. Other companies, such as Easy Signs of Australia, debuted new manufacturing facilities.

Manufacturing is flourishing, with an annual output of $8.4 billion, representing 18% of the Lehigh Valley’s record $47 billion Gross Domestic Product (GDP). By comparison, nationally, manufacturing is 12% of the U.S. GDP.

Innovators in life sciences, technology, health care, advanced manufacturing, and other sectors choose Lehigh Valley because it is within a day’s drive of one-third of the U.S. population, providing a speed to market advantage. With 11 colleges and universities and three career and technical schools graduating 11,000 students annually, employers have access to a pipeline of talent.

Creating

Family Solutions

VULNERABLE, AT-RISK YOUTH HAVE BEEN CALLING THE CHILDREN’S HOME OF EASTON “HOME” FOR NEARLY 140 YEARS. Since 1885, CHE has been a place of support, safety, opportunity, and inspiration to youth in Pennsylvania who are not able to remain at home. Located on forty-one acres of land, CHE is a private, nonprofit agency providing therapeutic, campus, and community-based programs with the goal of creating family solutions. Youth come to The Children’s Home after cases of neglect, trauma, abuse, and truancy.

Through comprehensive programs and services, the aim is to not only better the lives of the youth but to build, strengthen, and preserve the family’s full potential.

The Children’s Home remains true to their four pillars: compassion, respect, integrity, and perseverance. They are dedicated to the youth and families of the community and believe all children deserve a safe and supportive place to call home.

Cultivate. Create. Empower.

HEALTHY DIETS TAKE MORE THAN JUST FOOD. That’s why Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania is focused on empowering our neighbors through innovative programming that gives people the opportunity to explore culinary creativity, cultivate gardening skills, and weigh in on foods that are important to them.

Their dynamic and diverse programs teams are working in Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon, Monroe, Pike, and Wayne counties to share their tools for healthy eating. They encourage people to get their hands in the soil at one of their Garden Partners food pantry raised gardens, taste a new healthy treat through the Healthy Pantry Initiative, or find their inner chef at a hands-on Cooking Matters class.

Their Agency Relations team works closely with their partners to ensure neighbors have access to the fresh foods they want to eat and assists pantries in developing choice models.

Learning from the community and sharing their own knowledge through programs is just one of the ways Second Harvest Food Bank is Moving in a Fresh Direction. Follow them on Instagram to see more!
