A legacy of arts and culture

Interesting fact: while I was a student at USC, one of our projects was to produce a magazine. And now, 16 years later, you’re holding issue #44. Thank you to our team and the small businesses that make this possible!

Welcome to the Arts & Culture issue of Fig Columbia magazine. This issue, we’re diving into the theme “Express Yourself,” celebrating the incredible talent and vibrant creativity that defines our local community.

Columbia’s entrepreneurs, dancers, artists, makers, actors, and musicians are the heartbeat of our city. They appeal to our senses, enrich our lives, and transform our surroundings into something truly extraordinary.

Imagine how dull Columbia would be without their passion. It’s their creativity that brings color and life to our streets, businesses, and homes.

In this issue, we showcase the work of our local artisans, whose handcrafted items bring unique beauty to our daily lives. I’m proud to be wearing items by local artists in my photo for this edition. It’s a testament to the incredible craftsmanship and hard work that thrives in our community.

As a product of the University of South Carolina, I am especially excited to feature Meena Khalili in Fig Authentic. Her illustrations and view of Columbia are inspiring.

As we embrace the fall season, whether you’re sipping locally-roasted coffee on a campsite along the Palmetto Trail or cheering on our Gamecocks, remember: it is through our support and celebration of local talent that we continue to nurture the creative spirit that makes Columbia so special.

Together, we can ensure that Columbia remains a vibrant and dynamic city, where creativity and culture flourish.

Support small, save local—always.

Selling made sweet

The Sweeten Group @ RE/MAX At The Lake has been making waves in the Columbia real estate community for the last 13 years. This year, not only did the group break personal records with $7 million in sales in the month of May alone and an average price point of $720,800 for the month of June—founder Kate Sweeten was named to the RE/MAX 40 under 40 North America list for the fourth consecutive time. These numbers speak for themselves, but they don’t convey the personalized effort and attention Kate and her team deliver their clients.

Whether you’re buying or selling your home this season, you want a trusted agent on your side. Kate Sweeten respects and cares about your home just as you do— she understands that this decision is far more than a transaction. Her average days on market is eight days, her listings sell for over 100% of list price on average, and she stages all of her listings for free to command top dollar. Kate and the rest of The Sweeten Group are dedicated to guiding you through every step of the process.

A snapshot of the Midlands real estate market:

Houses are selling for $340,000 on average, which is 4% higher than last year’s average price.

If you’re looking to sell, be prepared for your house to spend slightly more time on the market. It’s now taking 38 days for a home to sell, versus a 35-day average in June of 2023.

Midlands residents are choosing to keep their homes for longer: this year’s number of new listings is down 16.52% from this time last year.

Things are looking up for buyers! This year only 26.4% of homes are selling for more than list price. In June of 2023, over 33% of listings were selling above list price.

*All calculations are based on the CMLS data from June 2023 and June 2024 for Richland and Lexington Counties.

Culinary artists

For Southern Way Catering, culinary excellence is more than simply pairing together the right ingredients or utilizing the best, well-honed recipes in their repertoire. It’s about presenting each dish with its own artisanal flair, giving your senses something to feast on before you even take the first bite. Their chefs plate the food with precision, topping with ingredients and seasonings that highlight all of the flavors found within the recipe. Combined with their Southern hospitality, it’s a dining experience you and your guests will be hard-pressed to forget!

Hallmark heritage

Nestled amidst the forested outskirts of Columbia, Magnolia Way epitomizes Southern charm, offering a picturesque setting for life’s most memorable occasions. Imagine hosting your special event where timeless history and natural beauty converge along their tree-lined drives and expansive green spaces.

Originally established in the early 1970s as a cherished horse farm, Magnolia Way was

renowned for breeding Arabian and Saddlebred horses. In 2018, the Fawcett family acquired this historic property, embarking on an ambitious renovation project that transformed the farmhouse into a stunning, modern venue. Preserving the essence of its storied past, the family retained much of the original wallpaper and molding, giving Magnolia Way its distinctive and antique elegance.

Social Mission South Carolina Wildlife Federation

Protecting the natural wildlife that thrives in South Carolina’s rivers, wetlands, and forests isn’t an easy task—nor can it be done alone. Sara Green, executive director of the South Carolina Wildlife Federation (SCWF), knows this well. Lasting conservation stems from a group effort, the kind that only comes to fruition based on a deep connection to the environment.

“If you don’t know about something or you’re not connected to something, you’re not going to feel the need to conserve it and protect it,” said Sara.

This connection is exactly what SCWF is seeking to foster with these initiatives. Through artistic creation and experiential learning in the outdoors, South Carolinians are forming their own singular attachment to the natural world around them and ultimately becoming more likely to protect it.

POWR: PALMETTO OUTDOOR WOMEN’S RETREAT

SCWF hosts several hands-on opportunities each year for women looking to gain outdoor recreation expertise, regardless of current skill level or ability. Whether you’re looking to learn more about archery, hunting, fishing, or nearly any other outdoor activity, SCWF is dedicated to providing options that offer something for everyone. Learn essential skills at POWR, or take your specializations to

a more advanced level at POWR UP. No matter what you choose, you’ll come out of your experience empowered to enjoy the outdoors on your own terms.

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST For over twenty years, SCWF has inspired amateur photographers to venture into nature with cameras in tow. Their annual wildlife photography contest features three categories: Carolina Critters, depicting the state’s indigenous wild animals; Scenes of South Carolina, focusing on natural spaces; and People in Nature, showing humans interacting with nature in an ethical manner. For Sara, her personal favorite submissions include animals you can usually only find deep in nature, like wood storks, bobcats, and black bears. Contest photos are due by October 31, and the winners will be notified by the end of the year.

STAMPS FOR CONSERVATION Federal duck stamps provide a direct opportunity for citizens to protect wildlife in South Carolina. Available for purchase through SCWF’s website, these duck stamps not only feature beautiful artwork—they have also helped preserve nearly 38,000 acres of South Carolina land with their proceeds. This is just one of many ways that SCWF demonstrates how group action can result in significant environmental change.

Shine around town

Our community shines brighter when we give back to it, and Lucy from the Upside Down Collection exemplifies this light with her exquisite handmade jewelry, each piece adding a touch of sparkle to our collective spirit. Next time you’re strolling about the town, keep your eye out for one of Lucy’s many pop-ups found at local boutiques and Soda City! Whether you shop in person or online, each beautiful necklace, bracelet, and pair of earrings purchased allows Lucy to share her story and bring the upside of Down syndrome into the spotlight.

Paint that endures

When South Carolina’s historic State House, which has been around since 1855, was in need of an interior facelift with a fresh coat of paint, there was only one company for the job. Rose Talbert Paints manufactures all of their products just 3.5 miles away from the Capitol and was up for the challenge of precisely matching the existing paint color inside the building. Their paint stands the test of time and will look as freshly painted in legislative sessions years down the road as it does in the ones today.

Their exceptional quality and resilience make them suitable for any occasion, from casual outings to formal affairs, effortlessly enhancing any ensemble with their sparkle and shine. Whether you pair your diamonds with denim or a stunning evening gown, they’ll add a touch of sophistication and brilliance to every outfit.

History in the making

Columbia’s very own Town Theatre has two major milestones coming up: in addition to launching the theatre’s 105th season, which will run from September to May, they are celebrating the 100th year of business in their iconic Sumter Street location! During this special season, expect a mix of classic stories and new adventures alike on the stage from Monty Python’s Spamalot to Anything Goes . Come to Town Theatre and celebrate the history and longevity of this staple of Columbia’s arts and culture scene.

Where young artists flourish

At Ben Lippen School, their vibrant Fine Arts program challenges students to create music, art, and theater at the highest level. Through captivating musicals, students not only learn theatrical and musical techniques but also deepen critical thinking skills and collaborate with professionals across South Carolina. Rooted in their Fine Arts motto, “Better Together,” students are equipped to reflect their Creator, serve their communities, and thrive as young artists.

Ben Lippen’s three musicals each year provide endless opportunities for students to learn theatrical and musical techniques.

Preserving beauty

Felini Art Conservators, formerly named “ReNewell,” is now under the dedicated stewardship of Veronica Davis, a specialist in the conservation of paintings, frames, and objects. Veronica’s tenure at Felini has solidified her reputation for achieving remarkable restoration work, preserving the beauty and integrity of important artworks using updated conservation techniques, including consolidation, stain removal, canvas repair, and beyond. If art is in the eye of the beholder, Veronica and Felini’s fine art conservation honor that beauty, ensuring that Columbia’s special artworks can be enjoyed by all for generations to come.

Creating community

Art, in its many forms, empowers imaginative expression where color, lines, and sentiment know no limits. This is certainly the case for The Vista’s newest art gallery, SoulHAUS. The founders of this modern gallery are committed to showcasing a rich variety of pieces by both established and underserved artists who use passion and determination to create the art they want to share with the world. Art lines SoulHAUS’ walls in all shapes, sizes, and price points. Inclusivity and beauty dwell in each work, and owners Preach Jacobs, Eric Duncan, and Kat Hunter know the best way to bring a community together is to make room on the canvas for everyone.

Authentic Meena Khalili

Columbia is full of devoted artists who draw inspiration from its charm and character for their artworks. Inspiration is everywhere, nestled between the brick and mortar of the small businesses that make our home city grow. For award-winning Iranian-American artist and University of South Carolina design professor Meena Khalili, Columbia and its small businesses serve as one of her many muses. Design has a story to tell—and so does Meena, our Fig Authentic spotlight.

You may know Meena from her daily drawings, a project she started five years ago with a pocket sketchbook, a pen, and a vision to bring the stories of Columbia to life on the page. After six moves in the span of four years, Meena craved a sense of belonging in her new surroundings.

She spoke with her partner, Brent, about how she could make the unfamiliar feel a bit more like home.

“What if I did a drawing of a place here everyday…so I would know one place?” she asked.

“Every city loves to be complimented,” said Brent.

In that moment, her plan became clear: to draw a place in Columbia every day and help its citizens, new and existing, weave renewed threads of affection for their town.

Since then, Meena has found even more ways to showcase Columbia, with a special focus on its local establishments. In 2021, she began a multimedia project highlighting how six determined shop owners sustained their businesses during COVID-19.

She transformed her recordings and sketches into augmented reality postcards, placing them outside storefronts where people could listen and learn about each business.

“My work is about the human experience, and it is about my experience,” said Meena. “My goal is always to take what has been personal to me and make it something that other people can understand and to start a conversation.”

Her journey to Columbia was entirely unexpected. During the move with her partner and infant daughter, their moving truck crashed, scattering their destroyed belongings along the interstate. When their new neighbors heard about what happened, they all came together, bringing groceries, bedding, and even a crib to help the young family settle in.

“We just got here, and the community was already there for us…it was wild to experience that,” said Meena.

That community has proven strong in the ensuing years. Now, Meena and Brent watch their daughter grow up alongside the children of those same neighbors who first came to their aid.

From class lectures to her daily drawings, Meena is rekindling the curiosity of Soda City’s residents, encouraging them to discover new ways to love the city.

Columbia has been the canvas for her illustrations these past years, and this artist shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.
