April showers bring May flowers

Welcome to the spring issue with the theme of Spring Forward.

The change of seasons is always exciting. I find the transition to spring the most magical. We get to see bare trees burst into color, tulips and daffodils push through the soil, and my favorite thing...our clocks spring forward!

Our whimsical cover and entire issue revolve around the timeless saying, “April showers bring May flowers.” It’s funny how those rainstorms in January perfectly set the stage for this edition, don’t you think?

We’re excited to introduce our Social Mission Partner for 2024, the South Carolina Wildlife Federation. Last year, I enrolled in the Midlands SC Master Naturalist Program by SCWF, and it was an absolute game-changer. It breathed inspiration into my spirit and connected me with a diverse group of nature enthusiasts. Together, we rediscovered our childlike wonder, marveling at the beauty of the natural world. Witnessing the vibrant, little yellow warbler for the first time was an

unforgettable highlight! But SCWF offers more than just nature education. Since 1931, they have been tirelessly serving our state, making a positive impact on our environment and wildlife.

Much like the natural world, we can be inspired to plant our own roots right here in Columbia. This spring, let’s embrace the season of growth and renewal. Step into the sunshine and get your hands dirty planting your very own vegetable garden. Stretch your body through invigorating yoga sessions or challenge yourself with running your first 5k! Read that book or take that class you have been putting off.

We hope this issue makes you proud to live in our city and encourages you to bloom. Thank you to the creative hands that design, write, photograph, and produce Fig and the incredible businesses that make Fig possible.

BRYNLEY FARR

with gratitude on behalf of the entire Fig Columbia Team

A trail for all

With beautiful weather returning to South Carolina, you can hit the trails this season with the whole family. The Palmetto Trail is on a mission to connect the entire state through a system of winding trails—across mountain ridges of the Upstate, through forests rich in wildlife, into the Midlands’ towns and cities, and across swamplands of the Lowcountry. Established thirty

years ago with 380 trail miles of their 500 mile goal already complete, the Palmetto Trail is one of just 16 crossstate trails in the country and seeks to connect all South Carolinians with the beauty that abounds statewide.

As a way to get more kids and families actively engaged in nature, the Palmetto Trail has formed a partnership with the Kids in Parks TRACK Trails program. Funded by the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation, TRACK Trails give families a chance to utilize self-guided materials to engage with the natural world, as children and grownups alike learn more about the trees, birds, and other features

that can be found along the trail. Kids can “track” their activities through the program’s website, kidsinparks.com, and earn prizes for each outdoor adventure completed. As the grant continues to roll out over the next three years, there will be a network of 150 TRACK Trails spanning the entire state —because every child should have access to the great outdoors.

Social Mission South Carolina Wildlife Federation

With the turning of a new calendar year, the quarterly Fig magazine begins again. As the natural world springs to life, South Carolina overflows with budding flora and wildlife awakens across the state. What better time than now to select the South Carolina Wildlife Federation as the focus for this year’s Social Mission? Since 1931, this nonprofit has committed itself to conserving and restoring South Carolina’s wildlife and habitats through education and advocacy. Originally founded by outdoorsmen who wished to preserve the lands and protect wildlife for future generations, the South Carolina Wildlife Federation (SCWF) has now grown to serve South Carolinians all over the state. From a young student who might be interacting with nature for the first time to hikers, birders, and backyard gardeners, the SCWF aims to level the playing field so that all might become inspired by the diverse ecosystems teeming with life across the Palmetto State.

“We have two arms—our education and our advocacy side,” says Sara Green, Executive Director of SCWF. “We have programs that are designed to connect people with the outdoors to learn about nature, outdoor skills, and getting people of all ages outside.” She continues, “Other educational programs focus on habitat enhancement. That might be creating a pollinator garden in your backyard or at a school.” Programs like the Wildlife And Industry Together (WAIT) programs help corporate landowners learn how to integrate wildlife habitat needs into land management.

From advocating for wetland preservation on a national level to protecting wildlife across the state, SCWF is no stranger to the state house. With legislature back in session now, this passionate team is in constant conversation with lawmakers about how bills might impact wildlife. Whether it’s helping tighten up bills that regulate the sale of reptiles and amphibians or incentivizing land conservation for farmers, Sara remarks, “We try to be the connection to nature for everybody and not just one side of the aisle.”

As spring takes shape across the state, the SCWF staff and volunteers are almost as busy as the flora and fauna this season. “A lot of birds start nesting in the spring. It’s breeding and migration season, so we’ve been getting bird boxes ready. We’re also distributing milkweed seeds for monarch butterflies. We send out 6,000 packets of native milkweed seed packets every year,” Sara says. With outdoor women’s retreats, birding workshops, and the wildly popular Master Naturalist program kicking back up, there’s no one way to get involved. By joining a community cleanup, attending oyster roasts or fundraising dinners, making a taxdeductible donation, or even helping out around the office, you make a direct impact on keeping South Carolina wild. The chances are that, if you find yourself caring about the state’s wildlife and habitat and want to protect it for future generations, there’s a place for you at the South Carolina Wildlife Federation.

Authentic Daniel Rickenmann

As the son of Swiss immigrants, Daniel Rickenmann was born and raised in Spartanburg, South Carolina. In ‘87, he found himself at the University of South Carolina to attend the only program in the Southeast for students with dyslexia. He fell in love with the Capital City and decided he never wanted to leave. “The people make up Columbia,” Daniel says. “We are a creative community and that’s what drives people here. We’re an incredible city with so much to offer,” he continues.

A former small business person himself, his passion for voicing concerns on behalf of the community eventually landed him in a multitude of public service roles. As the 71st Mayor of the City of Columbia,

Daniel’s passion for the city is self-evident, and so is his passion for young people. While Columbia rekindles opportunities for young adults to remain here rather than move away, Rickenmann knows how crucial it is to feel at home. “It’s important to foster a sense of community where people can raise families, launch businesses, and preserve that local vibe. Columbia is continually improving the environment for residents to thrive and grow,” he says.

A family man, Daniel and his wife raised their two daughters here. Daniel’s dream is for his daughters to come back to the Midlands to grow their own families. “Columbia is getting back to opportunities. While it’s an asset to be conveniently

located just a few hours from the mountains and the ocean, that isn’t all we have to offer,” he says. Rickenmann is passionate about Columbia’s unique identity as more than just a university town —the capital city of South Carolina, a land of winding rivers, and of distinct personality.

Hitting the ground running while in office, Rickenmann dives into a few upcoming initiatives. “We’ve teamed up with a marketing team to help us market Columbia. We’re coming up with a comprehensive solution to homelessness, and we’re continuing to invest in keeping talent in Columbia,” he says. With the public’s concern for environmental health becoming increasingly important, Daniel’s background and passion for a healthy planet is rooted in his experience as former CEO of W2E, a waste-to-energy facility. “One thing I’m very proud of is that we are the only city in South Carolina to be Gold LEED Certified,” he says. A rigorous certification process designed to help buildings, communities, and cities thrive in key areas of human and environmental health, this prestigious distinction ensures that Columbia is actively implementing solutions that aim to improve sustainability and the standard of living.

So, where might you find the Mayor on an ideal spring day in Columbia? He’ll tell you. “I could be walking through Soda City, talking with the locals, and learning about our communities. I’d fill up on delicious food, then head off to a baseball game, or even walk along the river,” he says. For Daniel, it’s all about immersing yourself in the place you call home. He reminds us, “Visit where people eat and where they live. Absorb yourself in the atmosphere.”

Let the showers bring the flowers

When was the first time you learned about the life cycle of a flower? Maybe it was in grade school or on a field trip with your science class. When we think of what a plant needs to spread its roots in the soil, branch out, and bloom, that phenomenon starts to look like a metaphor for growth right here in Columbia.

We are the roots that keep our community thriving and strong, through the sunshine and the rain. It’s just as important to nurture ourselves as it is our relationships and community as a whole. When we all come together, we can bloom right where we’re planted.

Get rooted

Each of us play a vital role in making Columbia a unique place to lay down roots. After all, a city wouldn’t be a city without people to call it home! Before we can branch out, we’ve got to give ourselves the care we need not only to survive, but to thrive.

Let's get growing, Columbia! For those strong, firm roots to take hold, we have to nourish the vessels we are in. They say that the taller the tree, the deeper the roots.

Before we can get up and get active in our community, let's make sure to take those steps to keep ourselves strong and healthy for years to come. Here are a few ideas to get you moving:

• Explore the trails of our river systems and use sctrails.net as your guide

• Try a fun new workout class like Goat Yoga at Fit Columbia

• Join a walking club or local sports league like kickball with Columbia Parks and Rec

• Sign up for your first 5k through Strictly Running

The health of our bodies and our minds are intertwined. As we nourish our minds, beautiful things begin to grow. Thoughts turn to action, dreams are realized, and ideas that were once seedlings can take shape. Here are a few ideas might spark inspiration:

• Find a new favorite author at a local book store

• Dive into a world of free eBooks, music, movies, and events at Richland Library

• Plant a garden and connect your mind with the soil on your hands

• Enroll in a creative class at the City of Columbia’s Art Center

• Take a nature course through South Carolina Wildlife Federation

• Join a book club locally or online

Branch out

Now that our own roots are firmly planted, it’s time to branch out! Columbia is a thriving city in the heart of South Carolina and there’s a little something here for everyone. Columbia’s unique charm and long term livability are made possible by its people who grow our sense of community everyday through rich ideas and collaboration. Wondering how to branch out? We’ve got a few ideas to get you started:

• Register to vote and make sure to take part in local elections

• Get involved with a local non-profit and volunteer with a cause you care for

• Attend free local events like the Soda City Market and First Thursdays on Main

• Volunteer with the Rosewood Orchard, Columbia’s community-based garden

• Support local business owners and shop small as often as you can

With our own roots firmly planted and branches spreading outward, we’re finally budding and ready to blossom and grow.

and bloom!

These past few years have been a reminder that supporting the local economy is vital to a flourishing Columbia. Small businesses are the backbone for any city in bloom and contribute to economic strength, job growth, and culture and arts in big ways.

What happens when you shop locally?

• Your dollars spent locally will recirculate 2-4 times more than when spent at a non-local company, according to Civic Economics.

• For every $1 dollar spent at a local business, over two-thirds of that dollar (~$0.68) will remain in the local economy compared to less than half remaining (~$0.43) when spent at a big-box store, according to the 2022 Small Business Economic Impact Study.

• You help make Columbia a thriving destination with a distinct personality and unique flair that no other city has! When we come together as a community, there’s nothing we can’t do. Each of us plays a vital role in a thriving city so we can all grow.

How will you bloom this year?

When the showers do roll in...

Not every day will be filled with sunshine, but we know that the rain is just as important as the sun in order to help us grow. Whether it's a gloomy day outside or you find yourself needing a little pick-me-up, we have a few ideas to share when the showers do roll in.

• Grab a friend and go bowling at The Grand

• Treat yourself to a self-care spa day or relaxing massage

• Catch a movie at The Nickelodeon Theatre

• Visit the Columbia Museum of Art or South Carolina State Museum

• Indulge in a sweet treat or cup of coffee at a local coffee or dessert shop

A home away from home

Since Ronald McDonald House Charities of Columbia, South Carolina, opened its doors on May 18, 1983, the organization has served as a “home away from home” for families who have children receiving critical care at Columbia area hospitals through its two cornerstone programs: The Ronald McDonald House, located beside Prisma Richland Hospital, and the Ronald McDonald Family Room, located in the main lobby of Prisma Richland Children's Hospital. The charity offers private rooms with bathrooms, warm meals at dinner time, self-service laundry, and hospital transportation, among many other services so that the family’s sole focus can be on the care and treatment of their child.
