NACDA COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD – GEORGIA TECH

NACDA MCLENDON SCHOLARSHIP KURT RUSSELL

For the fifth year, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the Fiesta Bowl presented the annual Community Service Award to a deserving collegiate athletics department.

The Fiesta Bowl is committed to supporting individuals pursuing postgraduate studies in athletics administration through the John McLendon Minority Postgraduate Scholarship. This year’s recipient of a $10,000 grant was Kurt Russell, who is completing a law degree and a master’s degree in Sports Law and Business at Arizona State University. Before moving to Arizona, Russell graduated from Ohio University with two bachelor’s degrees, in Business Administration and Sports Management.

Georgia Tech received the 2021 award for its #AllVoteNoPlay initiative. The campaign championed new NCAA legislation petitioning for Federal Election Day, as a day off from all athletics activities, allowing student-athletes and staff time to practice their civic right to vote. Additionally, a voters engagement pledge was created, detailing ways to engage student-athletes in voting and non-partisan voter education – more than 5,000 student-athletes were aided in registering to vote.
