Women of Stephens Pipe and Steel

In this issue of "Fence News" we salute six more of the women who have helped make our 50 years successful. With 19 locations, we think it is important to include ladies from our branch locations as well as those from Russell Springs. Some have been with us for 20 years while others have enjoyed a shorter tenure. That loyalty is appreciated. They work in different areas of the company. Laure has worked in reception for 20+ years and is likely the first person you talked to the first time you called Kentucky. Kim started with us right out of high school. We couldn’t be prouder of these six ladies and all the other women who work to make Stephens Pipe & Steel the company we are today.

I started at SPS as a general office adminstration in 2005. I worked up to Executive Assistant, Office Manager, and I’m now a full time sales representative. I have built amazing relationships with both clients and co-workers over the years. It has been an honor to work for and grow with this company and I look forward to many more years to come.

Roberta Branem

I have been in the fence industry since 2007, learning the trade from my Dad. I started knowing nothing about fence and now it’s all I think about. I was blessed to join the Stephens Pipe and Steel team when Terry opened the Kansas City branch 4 years ago.

Heather Blessing

Stephens Pipe and & Steel has been my home for the last 27 years. Managing the phone operations has given me the opportunity to get know our customers. Talking and laughing with them is what makes my job the best!

Laure Irvin

I came to Stephens Pipe in Nov. 2015. I never imagined making a career in the Fence Industry. Now I am a Sales Rep with endless opportunities. Having a customer service background, it's only natural to cultivate lasting relationships with co-workers, customers, and vendors. I don't mind lending a hand where it's needed. Working for SPS has been a great experience. We work together like a well oiled machine.

Shelley Taylor

My career at Stephens Pipe and Steel began in September 1996 in the billing department. I moved to accounts payable and sales tax a few years later. Currently, I am the accounts payable manager. Our department pays the bills and invoices for all 19 branches. We also work with sales people to invoice all direct orders. I’m thankful for the relationships I have made in the last 28 years.

Donna Shaw

I started my career at SPS in April, 1991 in the accounts receivable department and continued until April 2014 when I took over as Sales Tax Manager. Today, my job is to file all of our sales tax for the 45 states that we are registered in and approve all sales tax exempt forms. I have truly been blessed to work for such a wonderful company for 33 years in which I have seen grow tremendously throughout the years.

Gate Safety is Priority Within ASTM Steps toward safety and professional growth

Gate safety is top of mind in the fence industry and even more so, after the tragic death of seven-year-old Alex Quanbeck in 2019 due to an accident with a rolling gate at his school. Alex’s family founded The Hummingbird Alliance to raise awareness about gate safety.

Unfortunately, his was not an isolated incident. Others have been harmed or killed by unsafe gates. Many safety initiatives have surged within the industry to ensure no one is harmed by an unsafe fence or gate.

Through the American Fence Association (AFA), education channels are in place to guide professionals in the industry. Recently, more resources have been dedicated to guide and implement programs to drive safety awareness and adherence to industry standards.

Ben Shirley, director of marketing and training with Ameristar Perimeter Security, is the ASTM F14 chair.

“The tragedy that happened to Alex Quanbeck and his family is devastating,” says Shirley. “Within ASTM and our industry, we made a commitment to review and seek changes to our standards. The first of those changes was ASTM standard F1184, a specification for manual slide gates. By adopting language from ASTM F2200, we were able to update the manual slide gate specification to include instructions that will help mitigate safety concerns. What may seem like a minor change in language within a document has a huge ripple effect to an industry.”

“What may seem like a minor change in language within a document has a huge ripple effect to an industry.”
—Ben Shirley, ASTM F14 Chair

Leading the charge for gate safety, the AFA, The Hummingbird Alliance and industry leaders are working with multiple groups to create requirements for gate construction using ASTM standards.

“The state of California, International Code Council (ICC), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are just a few of the groups feeling the ripple effect of our industry pulling together to ensure gate safety,” Shirley says. “The AFA not only created dedicated resources for education but also government relations. These roles help our industry remain relevant and grow professionally by protecting our contractors from unforeseen risk.”

Shirley has been with Ameristar for over 20 years in various capacities. “A common theme that continues to increase is the demand for engineering services. Earlier in my career, I might see one request every other week for

load data on a project. Today, it’s common to have multiple Architect & Engineering (A&E) firms requesting engineering services on various projects daily. Architects want products that meet specific ASTM standards and the data showing how products meet these standards. This increased demand is directly correlated to A&E firms ensuring every project is installed in a way that is safe and will mitigate risk.”

“It’s exciting to be a part of and see our industry grow professionally through the impact of an engaged association,” he says. “The efforts our industry leaders have had through the AFA and its educational programs continues to be the spark that ignites positive change. As A&E firms continue to demand project specific engineered fence and gate systems, I foresee an increase in the development of ASTM standards. Industry leaders have an opportunity to help better define installation and application requirements through expansion of ASTM standards. Our industry is in its infancy stage of identifying fence and gate safety. It’s important to the growth of our industry and the safety of generations to come that we take an active role now to ensure the progress of the important topic of gate safety.”

a donation for life

Some high school friendships last a while, but most people lose touch after a few years. Andrea Hogan, CEO with Fencing Supply Group, has a distinction very few hold: she donated a kidney to benefit her high school friend, Kathy Everlof.

While the kidney was not a match for Kathy, Andrea’s donation moved Kathy up on the waiting list at University of Pennsylvania Health System, also known as Penn Medicine.

The cause of Kathy’s kidney disease is unknown. She went into kidney failure in June of 1988 and received a kidney from her mother which lasted 35 years. “Most kidney transplants last about 20 years, so I am very fortunate that mine lasted 35,” Kathy says. Her mother continues to thrive, but the kidney Kathy received began failing about a year ago.

Family members were eager to step up and many were tested for compatibility. Unfortunately, none were a match. “It was a difficult time,” Kathy shares. “Several of my friends were tested, too. They would get so far into the process and then would be told they were unable to donate for various reasons.”

Andrea investigated the possibility of donating a kidney for Kathy. “I figured I could check into it and see what it was all about and then decide,” Andrea says. “I registered to be tested through Penn Medicine. They sent information letting me know about the process. I stepped my way through it, getting the screenings done, and I got the call that I was authorized to become a kidney donor, but I was not a match for Kathy.”

Even so, a kidney donation from Andrea would move Kathy to the living donor list through a program at Penn Medicine known as the paired exchange program. “This was Kathy’s chance to get on that list,” Andrea explains.

Andrea talked with her husband and her grown children, they went over the risks, research, and data. Ultimately, with her family’s support, Andrea made the decision to donate. “I gave up very little to be in a position to help improve and possibly save two lives: Kathy’s and the person who received my kidney,” Andrea says.

Andrea Hogan, left, with Kathy Everlof, right

The surgery was done October 3, 2023, and went well. Andrea’s kidney was flown to Massachusetts. She doesn’t know who received it, but the outcome was successful.

“The decision process was a slow progression,” she says. “Every step led to the next step, but through it all, I felt like I was doing the right thing. The data is encouraging; no donor under the care of Penn Medicine has developed kidney disease, none have died. The outcomes are great.”

In early May, Kathy received the good news she’d been waiting to hear for many months: she had a match. On May 21, her new kidney was transplanted. Today, Kathy is doing great and recovering well.

“Her recovery will be a lot like mine,” explains Andrea. “Lots of walking, no lifting for a while, and she is working with her doctor to get the anti-rejection meds to the right levels. She and I text often, and every time, the news is better and better!”

Penn Medicine set a worldwide record with 100 kidney-paired donation transplants in 2023. More than 90,000 people in the US are waiting to receive a kidney transplant, and 4,000 people in the US die each year waiting to receive a transplant.

Coordinated through the National Kidney Registry, paired exchange helps those in need of a kidney transplant who have a willing, but non-compatible living donor. Paired exchange gives each of them another chance to help both their loved one and others, expanding the pool of potential donors and recipients.

“I was compelled to do what I could do, especially when I found out 90,000 are waiting,” Andrea says. “There are probably millions who would qualify to become a donor, but they don’t know enough about it. I’m hoping that by sharing my story, someone else might check into it, especially if they have someone in their circle of friends or family that could benefit from it.”

Andrea continues to thrive. “I’m doing great,” she says. “I feel like I did before the surgery, I haven’t noticed anything different. I was back to work part-time after a week, and in another week or so, I was working full-time. Penn Medicine continues to monitor me, and everything looks great. I am so excited that Kathy is now ready to begin her next chapter and I’m thrilled to celebrate with her.”

“I am in awe of Andrea,” Kathy says. “She stepped up and did not even tell me she was going through the testing until it was almost over. I am truly blessed to have her as my friend. How do you thank someone for giving you a kidney? She is an amazing person. I am not surprised she did it because she has always been a wonderful, caring person and she comes from a very kind, loving family.”

women in fencing

“Women have helped pave the way for me and I will do the same for those coming behind me.”

MADELEINE DIERLING , Thomas Fence

As business manager with Thomas Fence in Arkansas, Madeleine Dierling says the change that comes with the job is exciting.“My favorite part of my job is putting my problem-solving skills to use in helping our employees and customers.”

She started with Thomas Fence in 2021 as a part-time secretary. Prior to that, she was the office manager for another construction company in Northwest Arkansas. “I enjoy the challenges and learning that comes from a management position and it was an easy decision to accept a position at Thomas Fence. Career-wise, I took a step back to be in a better position to take a much larger step forward in my career and in support of my family,” she explains.

“My position has evolved over time, quite dramatically,”Madeleine says.“As a full-time business manager, I now have accountabilities for all our inhouse bookkeeping, accounting, accounts receivable and accounts payable. I oversee our human resources related matters, including benefits, payroll, recruiting and hiring and I keep the day-to-day office operations running smoothly. Challenging myself to accept

change at a fast pace, understanding the ever-changing business dynamics and keeping my skills relevant to those business dynamics is just a part of what I enjoy as a business manager.”

She’s learned through the years that it’s perfectly fine to ask for help.“I used to think that asking for help meant I did not know how to do my job. However, today I know that asking for help not only demonstrates I know my job, but it also shows courage, willingness to learn and improves productivity so that my tasks are completed on time and correctly. I win, the company wins and the customer wins, all in part because I was willing to ask for help.”

Madeleine likes to find creative ways to solve business problems. That, combined with analytical thinking, has proven useful in her career. Learning new skills along with learning what not to do, has formed the foundation for a solid career.

“Although the fencing industry is historically maledominated, I believe that women who were and are successful in this industry helped pave the way for me and I will do the same for those coming behind me,”

she says.“I have a big personality and I tend to make my points loud and clear whether you ask for it or not. It is important to me that I’m prepared to do whatever job is before me. Being willing to accept and conquer the challenge is key.”

One of those challenges was a group goal at Thomas Fence among the leadership team at the end of 2022. “We wanted to achieve $3.8 million in sales for 2023 and reach at least one-month sales of $500,000, a record for a single month,”Madeleine explains.“I am proud to say we met both goals. There was hard work on everyone’s part, but I’m especially proud of our fence crews. They worked in the summer heat and the cold of winter. The leadership of our company truly care about people and make sure all employees have what is needed to do our work in a safe, productive, and fun environment. I like to think I have had a part in that.”

A quote that has inspired her along the way is by Eleanor Roosevelt:“Never allow a person to tell you no who doesn’t have the power to say yes.”

“My customers are like family.”
KIM RAGAN, Iron World

Kim Ragan, account manager, is celebrating 17 years this October with Iron World. Having been in the fencing industry for 32 years in November, she’s seen many trends come and go, but knows quality customer service is timeless.

Ragan is responsible for all aspects of sales, including new business, assisting with technical support and logistics, quotes, orders, collections, and shipping assistance, to name a few.“It’s like having my own Iron World branch out of my home office where I can do inside work and also be on the road when I’m able to sell,”she explains.

Knowing challenges are part of the day-to-day job, she says it’s how the challenges are handled is the key in having a successful career.

“Recently, one of my customers received the wrong

posts for a job that was going to be installed that week,” Ragan says.“I was able to coordinate with my shipping department to have a truck in that area to resolve the issue the next day so that my customer did not have to change his installation schedule. I believe my customers know I will go to bat for them in any given situation. My customers are like family to me, and I’ve known many of them for over 30 years. They know they can rely on me to help make their business as successful as possible.”

Motivated by pride in her work, she says her competitive attitude helps push her to aim high.“Selling an excellent product is great motivation, too,”Ragan says.“I strive for excellence every day to make Iron World a force to be reckoned with in the fencing industry.”

“Look for opportunity and seize it.”

Playing competitive sports from a young age and through college gave Courtney Blann the foundation for a successful career.“Being coachable was a critical factor in success as a student athlete. This also instilled in me the importance of teamwork and adaptability,” she says.

Prior to joining Trex, Blann worked in both retail and professional sale roles.“Through these experiences, I learned I really had a passion for sales that involved daily engagement with customers, so I completed an undergraduate degree specializing in sales, economics, and marketing."

Blann joined Trex in 2015. While initially unfamiliar with the brand and the building

COURTNEY

BLANN, Trex

materials industry, her sales background led her to pursue an open retail sales associate position with the company.“It was a chance to contribute fresh ideas and strategies,”she says.“Within three years on the Trex retail team, I progressed to become a sales representative, leading to a subsequent promotion to account manager, and then retail district manager. Soon after, I took on the role of regional sales manager for the Southeast.”

Trex is the world’s leading brand of sustainably made, wood-alternative decking and deck railing and a leader in high-performance, low-maintenance outdoor living products. Trex employs more than 1,900 people worldwide and boasts the industry’s strongest distribution network with products sold through more than 6,700 retail outlets across six continents. The Southeast region encompasses Tennessee, the Carolinas and Florida, and currently holds the top ranking for growth across the company.

Blann now oversees the creation and execution of the strategic plan for her region's growth. “For me, it’s all about the synergy between people, products, and the company itself,”says Blann.“Guiding a team and making a positive impact on someone’s career has been the most significant experience for me. We strive to empower, support, and challenge them every day.”

Blann says during her earlier years at Trex, she had minimal interaction with, or awareness of, other female managers or colleagues in the industry.“I forged my own path and feel like I earned continuous support and respect from our team, partners, and customers, with no regard for my age or gender. I believe much of the uncertainty among women in this male-dominated field stems from its

uncommon nature and a general lack of female candidates.”

However, in recent years, Blann says she’s witnessed a tremendous rise in the number of women in the industry. “It fills me with immense pride to be part of the company’s top sales region, which boasts four female managers and five female sales representatives, the most across the entire Trex sales team. The increasing presence of women in these sectors not only cultivates workplace inclusivity but also helps to break stereotypes and sets a foundation for future generations.”

Blann says the best advice she’s ever received came from her parents, who made it a point to instill the importance of consistently choosing the right path, regardless of the situation.“On the professional side, one of the most impactful pieces of advice I received early in my career was to prioritize listening over speaking. Actively listening, rather than focusing on responding, is crucial to understanding the needs of both our team and customers."

For young women starting their careers, Blann’s advice is to seize opportunities and remain open to diverse paths, even if it’s not the dream job you were seeking.“In such a rapidly expanding industry, everyone holds equal potential to succeed, especially young females. It’s also important to embrace what makes you unique. Your viewpoint as a woman in a predominantly male field is precious. Shape your own narrative and craft your distinctive story. And finally, never stop learning. Keep asking questions, gain practical experience, and be aware of industry changes. The field constantly evolves through innovation, so make sure you’re a part of it.”

“Let your work ethic speak for itself. ”

SABRINA LEIGH WIGGINS, Zekelman

Industries

A love of numbers, a strong work ethic and the ability to work well in high pressure situations led Sabrina Wiggins to her career path. She earned two degrees in accounting, a Bachelor of Science and an MBA. She has 18 years of experience in the accounting and finance field; the last 10 of those have been with Zekelman, where she worked her way up through various finance roles in the organization to her current position as finance manager and plant controller for Zekelman’s Wheatland Tube company’s Illinois plants in Chicago and Rochelle.

Zekelman is a family of companies with 20 manufacturing locations (and growing), and over 2900 team members across North America. The company is the leading independent manufacturer of hollow structural sections (HSS) and steel pipe, and the top producer of electrical conduit and elbows, couplings, and nipples in North America.

“Zekelman is a great company to work for,”says Wiggins.“I’ve been given the opportunity to grow and learn, and to challenge myself while working in different finance roles supporting corporate, tax and plant manufacturing."

Her primary responsibilities are planning and coordinating plant budget and finance activities in alignment with corporate goals, policies, and practices.“I enjoy the use of numbers, data and collaborating across departments to maximize insight for problem-solving and projections that impact the results of the organization. Being organized and working efficiently allows me to contribute a lot more to my team when they need me most.”

Wiggins says the continued support of companies like Zekelman, that provide resources and opportunities for women to build successful careers, help women overcome any obstacles that exist in the male-dominated manufacturing industry.

An ongoing challenge in her industry is the ever-evolving regulations put upon manufacturing and finance.

“No one has made it to where they are today without help along the way,”says Wiggins.“I’ve been very fortunate to have a lot of mentors and supporters throughout my life, who have shared their wisdom with me,”says Wiggins.“Some of the best advice I’ve ever received is that asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength. Don’t be afraid to ask, and then remember to return the favor when someone asks you for help.”

She encourages women to not be intimidated when working in a male-dominated industry.“Allow your work ethic to speak for itself and partner with people and an organization who will recognize and support that.”

Linda Sheehan

Linda Sheehan was named CEO of Trident Enterprises on her dad’s 82nd birthday, March 2, 2021. The company was founded in 1984 by her parents. Growing up in the business, Linda is now at the helm, directing it into new growth. Her people-first commitment is evident among employees and customers alike.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN CEO OF TRIDENT ENTERPRISES?

My parents started the business almost 40 years ago. My father ran the business until he named me CEO on his 82nd birthday, March 2, 2021, just a few months before he passed away, a little over three years ago.

WHAT WAS YOUR POSITION IN THE COMPANY PRIOR TO THAT?

I’ve been part of the business from the day it began, when I was about eight years old. I have been working around or participating in the fencing business my entire life. My MBA and professional experience in human resources allowed me to assist our small business with functions such as payroll and benefits administration before the company was large enough to justify a dedicated full-time employee to handle these responsibilities.

WHAT WAS YOUR CAREER PATH?

I attended the University of Florida and received a bachelor’s degree in business administration and an MBA. Over the course of my career, I have worked in the transportation industry, for a defense contractor, and in executive and university recruiting, all the while running a small business consulting firm on the side.

As Trident grew, I knew it was likely that I would be given the opportunity to take over and lead the company, which appealed to my entrepreneurial side, and I welcomed the opportunity.

HOW DID THE NAME TRIDENT COME ABOUT?

The name Trident originated from my father's background as a Navy man who initially worked on Trident Nuclear Submarines. The name stuck, carrying with it a legacy of dedication and precision, qualities that we strive to uphold in our company's ethos.

Trident Enterprises has ventured into new growth throughout its 40-year history. What has been the evolution?

It was originally established as a livestock fencing installation company and led the way as a wildlife exclusion expert company for over 35 years. Our knowledge of installation and distribution gave us the expertise to develop our own line of deer fencing accessories.

We’re proud to work with diverse groups and landowners throughout the U.S. and Canada to safely protect gardens and outdoor spaces from animal intrusion. We’ve worked with vineyards, garden centers, federal agencies, and wildlife conservation groups, as well as animal rescue organizations.

WHAT ARE A

FEW BUSINESS-RELATED

CHALLENGES THAT YOU’VE FACED AND OVERCOME?

Navigating the challenges of leadership transition wasn’t just about fitting into the traditional mold of business owners. Leading through this transition, I faced the challenge of not fitting the traditional mold of business owners in our industry. This was mirrored internally as our team wasn't accustomed to having a woman at the helm of our organizational chart.

I spent the first two years restructuring the company foundation in a way that was most important to me: people first. Culture changes take time and aren’t always smooth or easy. However, three years into my CEO role, I believe my team now trusts me to guide the business toward continued growth and to navigate

challenges with confidence and resilience.

One of the most significant challenges we faced during this time was overcoming supply chain issues, particularly amidst rapid growth and external disruptions like the pandemic and the more recent disruptions affecting major shipping routes such as the Suez and Panama Canals, as well as the Port of Baltimore closure. Despite these hurdles, we leveraged our broad network of suppliers, adapted sourcing strategies, diversified our supply chain, and implemented agile logistics solutions. By maintaining close communication with our partners and proactively addressing potential bottlenecks, we successfully mitigated the impact of these disruptions.

To address rising shipping costs, we took proactive steps by launching our Logistics division, leveraging our volume to negotiate continuing discounts with carriers, and ensuring efficient and cost-effective shipping solutions for our operations.

WHAT IS THE ORGANIZATION FLOW OF TRIDENT ENTERPRISES AND ITS SUBSIDIARIES?

Trident Enterprises is the corporation behind Trident Fence, DeerBusters and Easy Pet Fence Brands, as well as Trident Logistics. We sell wholesale to contractors and fence installers through our TridentFence.com site, and direct to the public via our retail sites: Deerbusters.com and Easypetfence.com. We ship across the U.S. and Canada.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

I learn something new every day. I enjoy watching employees grow and take on the challenge of developing our product offerings to meet customer needs. This is something we have always done well: listening to our customers and working hard to develop product solutions that meet their needs. I have a bird’s-eye view of the fencing industry, and I am fascinated by its continuing innovations.

WHAT IS A TYPICAL WEEK FOR YOU?

It involves a lot of meetings, reviewing financials and executive administration. But I regularly take the opportunity to travel and attend tradeshows across the country to meet with our customers face-to-face.

We’ve recently partnered with a few “influencers” to find ways to give back to our communities on a national scale. We already support our local humane societies and rescues and were looking for ways to expand those efforts for a greater reach. A large team from Trident recently traveled to Oklahoma to volunteer to help with the Beagle Freedom Project and in May we are headed to California to support Milo’s Sanctuary as they build new facilities and celebrate their 20th anniversary serving the community.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE FENCING INDUSTRY?

Most people in and around the fencing industry are environmentalists at heart. They love nature and being outdoors and work hard to preserve natural resources. It is a common thread that is a passion of mine, as well. I appreciate the opportunity to support these diverse efforts across the nation.

HOW DO YOU MENTOR YOUR EMPLOYEES?

When I took over as CEO, I focused a great deal of energy on employee retention. We currently have 27 employees who are experts in their fields. Product knowledge and continuous customer interactions are so important to our success. Some of the ways we retain our best employees are by offering employee-sponsored healthcare plans, a matching 401(k), and a generous profit-sharing program. For a small business, we work hard to offer our employees thoughtful, comprehensive benefits programs.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

A challenge. I have a responsibility to my employees and stakeholders to continue challenging the status quo to bring about greatness in our organization. Knowing they rely on our ability to navigate obstacles with determination and creativity inspires me to continually seek out challenges and turn them into opportunities for growth and success.

Belgard Partners with Queer Eye’s Tan France to Help Create His Salt Lake City Home

Tan France, well-known television personality and stylist, and one of the stars of Netflix’s Queer Eye, enlisted the help of Belgard®, the leader in outdoor living essentials, to bring the outdoor living spaces at his Utah home to life. Several Belgard hardscape products are featured in the home’s outdoor designs, which were highlighted in the Architectural Digest series, “Home At Last.”

Designed by The Fox Group and landscape and garden designer Emily Brooks Wayment, the English Tudor-style home includes several unique outdoor spaces, like a glass gazebo and Tuxedo Garden, as well as lush landscaping, with Belgard products that complement the overall style of the home.

"Working with Belgard has been such a joy,” says France. “Their innovative products and excellent service helped us create the amazing outdoor spaces that make up our dream home. My family is looking forward to making many happy memories here, thanks in part to Belgard."

Belgard’s new CharlestoneTM paver, which mimics the look of hand-cobbled stone, was used in the driveway and patio areas to enhance the home’s Old English aesthetic. This paver was the perfect choice for the long, sloped driveway, as the design team wanted a grand and stylish entrance to the property. The driveway is lined with the Shelton WallTM, and the entryway features a classic black-and-white checkered floor pattern made with Glocal porcelain pavers.

Shelton Wall was a large component of the France home, as the build required extensive retaining wall structures. The Garden Wall in the backyard was constructed with Shelton Wall, with Brooks Wayment adding native Utah florals and grasses, as well as classic shrubs like boxwood and laurel hedge, to recreate the classic English style.

While not typically English, the home features an incredible poolscape designed with coping from Belgard, as well as Glocal porcelain pavers laid into the surrounding turf.

“It was wonderful working with Tan, Emily and The Fox Group to bring their amazing vision for this home to life,” says Courtney DiSalvo, senior brand manager, Belgard. “The Belgard products used throughout Tan’s outdoor spaces amplify the beautiful English style of the home, which cuts a striking figure against the surrounding Utah mountains. We’re proud to be part of this project and hope Tan and his family enjoy their outdoor living areas for years to come.”

IG Railing Partners with Coffman

IG Railing has announced a partnership with Coffman Stair Parts. Coffman will now stock and distributed IG Railing’s frameless glass railing from its Texas and Georgia warehouses.

“2024 continues to be a strong year dedicated to making our products easy to buy throughout North America” says Mike Kunard, co-owner of IG Railing. “As a young company, we are excited to work with Coffman who has navigated success for an impressive 150 years in the railing and stair parts industry.”

“Our vision is growing to include strategic partnerships allowing us to leverage our expertise of inventory management, logistics, national customer relationships and product solutions beyond our heritage of stair parts,” says Coffman president Derek Barksdale. “IG Railing is a first step in that direction which we are excited to enter. We have been preparing for this evolution to our business and look forward to serving our dealer base of customers with an expanded service and product offering.”

IG Railing is built on a patented base, called a spigot, that houses a Wi-Fi controlled LED light, holding ½-inch (12mm) tempered low iron glass. By day, IG Railing eliminates sight obstructions of traditional post and framed rail systems. By night, the low-iron glass and LED lighting allow illumination to flow throughout the panels. Glass connector accessories, top rail and spigots are available in matte black or polished finishes.

Pool Fencing Best Practices

Families look forward to the warm summer days spent out by the pool. A focal point for entertaining, homeowners often have high expectations for the design of their pool area.

Todd Bingham, president of Top Rail Fence, offers key considerations to keep in mind when working on pool fencing projects.

PERMISSIONS AND REGULATIONS

Before a fencing project begins, always review local laws and municipality regulations for any permitting requirements. Homeowners should also review any homeowner association agreements for fencing restrictions. “A homeowner may have a certain fence style in mind, but if they must meet certain parameters, knowing this information will help you work with them on what options are possible,” says Bingham. He also recommends having homeowners review their insurance policies for any fencing requirements. Typically, policies do not include fence requirements, but it is possible.

MATERIAL OPTIONS

The most common styles of pool fencing are vinyl and ornamental. Depending on building

restrictions and the geographic area of the project a homeowner may prefer one material over the other. “Families in densely populated areas may prefer vinyl fencing for an extra layer of privacy,” Bingham explains. Other considerations for homeowners should be the type of posts used for their fencing. Top Rail suggests smooth top panel instead of spear top to protect children and pets should they find a way to climb over the fence.

POOL FENCE CODES

Current pool fence code states posts should be a minimum of 48 inches high with no more than a 2-inch gap from the ground. Pickets should be no more than 4 inches apart. Latches should be at the top of an entry gate and placed on the inside of fencing (54 inches above ground). Gates should also have self-latching design and

hinges should swing out from the pool. “The current standard in pool fencing is 54-inch height. Self-latching mechanisms add a layer of security against children or pets entering the pool area unattended,” Bingham says.

SAFETY FIRST

Bingham says it’s never a bad idea to review pool fence safety with homeowners. “We encourage homeowners to not leave furniture or other outdoor items near a pool fence so children and pets cannot easily climb over to the other side. Be mindful of vegetation around fencing as well, large tree limbs can also be an access point for climbing over the fence. In general, no strings, ropes or pool equipment should be kept on the fencing.”

The Carolinas Fence Association has completed seven projects with Purple Heart Homes over the last five years. These projects provide a fence as a portion of a larger Military Makeover project spearheaded by Purple Heart Homes. The material cost for these projects totals over $70,000, and it’s completely free for the veteran.

Military Makeover with Montel Williams is produced and broadcast on Lifetime Network. The next project is scheduled for July 2024 and another one will air later in the year in the 4th quarter.

“Purple Heart Homes partnered with Military Makeover in 2023,” explains Scott Galpin, sales and operations manager with SRF Fence/Trex Fence Products. “One of their fence contractors couldn’t work on the project in Texas. Through the relationship of Purple Heart Homes and the Carolinas Fence Association/American Fence Association, we reached out to the Texas AFA Chapter, and they were able to step in to help. Purple Heart Homes had other projects lined up in our chapter area, so the Carolinas chapter was able to get involved. It’s been an honor to work with their organizations and the veterans.”

Galpin, along with Jon McCoy with Eastern Wholesale Fence – Fort Mill are the primary contacts with Purple Heart Homes for the Carolinas Chapter. Purple Heart Homes is an organization dedicated to helping disabled veterans with a variety of needs. It could be a bathroom remodel, wheelchair ramp, a new tiny house or even a fence. It was a great partnership when they collaborated with Military Makeover with Montel Williams because their goals are so well aligned.

“In a recent project that we did in Statesville, North Carolina, they needed a new fence to ensure the children of the veteran could play safely outside,” Galpin says. “The children were home schooled, so they used their back yard for a playing and learning environment since a new shed was brought in by the show to be their outdoor classroom.”

Another project was done recently in Lake Worth Beach, Florida. The veteran sustained injuries while overseas. A hot tub was installed where he could soak his damaged muscles. He needed a fence to provide privacy and security. “The makeover team came in and installed the hot tub along with an amazing tiki hut that his family is enjoying,” explains Galpin. “We

Fencing Companies Give Back MILITARY MAKEOVERS

provided the fence for the hot tub and backyard to give them the security that many veterans need to feel safe.”

“All of the families have specific needs that the show and volunteers try to meet,” he says. “It’s been an overwhelming success. The looks on the veterans’ families faces at the reveal prove that all the hard work is worth it. These families can now focus on being together while that veteran is healing and enjoying time with their families.”

The Carolinas chapter reaches out to local AFA membership to invite anyone who would like to participate. Galpin helps get materials donated and works with the local contractors on the fence layout, making sure material counts are correct, and getting utilities marked ahead of time. “We have been blessed to have so many great companies that are willing to support a great cause by donating their time and products,” he says. “This would not be possible without the generosity of these companies.”

“The focus of these projects is simple - service. It is an amazing feeling to help someone else in need and for us to focus our energy and efforts to serve,” Galpin says. “One of my favorite moments was at the end of the Statesville, North Carolina, project when one of the fence crews said, ‘I can’t believe we had four different fence contractors working on the same project and no one argued over how to put in the fence.’ That proves we’re all focused on the veteran’s family.”

The suppliers include:

Eastern Wholesale Fence

– Fort Mill

SRF Trex Fencing

• Iron World Fencing

• Nationwide Industries

• Mid Atlantic Entry

• Antebellum Manufacturing

• Carolina Vinyl Products

• Master Halco

For Galpin and McCoy, serving others is a priority. “We’ve both been chapter presidents, AFA board members and we look for opportunities to partner with organizations doing great things,” Galpin says. “Purple Heart Homes allows us to serve those who protect us. I get way more out of these projects by serving our veterans than they get from a fence. My sincere appreciation goes out to everyone who has served on these projects, and I look forward to future projects.”

Industry Veterans Share Leadership Insights

not the only way to develop strong leadership skills, the people-focused nature of the military offers invaluable lessons to anyone interested in growing as a leader. I spoke to several industry veterans to highlight four areas where their military experience prepared them to lead in their current roles.

DECISIVENESS AND TEAM COLLABORATION

Military leaders are trained to make swift, informed decisions, often under immense pressure. This decisiveness is complemented by the ability to gather and synthesize input from diverse team members to form stronger, more effective decisions.

In our industry, this skill translates to evaluating situations quickly, consulting with relevant team members, and making decisions that incorporate the best available ideas. McKay Lundgren, an Army vet and owner of Siren Operated Sensors, shared this perspective, “A leader who can quickly pull together a team, listen to their insights, and make clear, decisive choices will keep projects moving forward and maintain team morale. This approach leverages the group's collective intelligence and instills confidence in decision-making.”

PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY AND CARE FOR THE TEAM

The military instills a profound sense of personal accountability, emphasizing the leader’s responsibility for the welfare of their subordinates. This fosters a leadership style focused on empathy, support, and growth of team members.

“Leaders who prioritize the needs of their people create a supportive work environment, leading to higher job satisfaction and productivity,” shared Navy vet and Controlled Products System Group Senior Analyst, Brian Boutte. “Being accountable to your people, providing opportunities for their growth, and recognizing their successes will foster greater teamwork.”

STRATEGIC THINKING AND MISSION PLANNING

Strategic thinking and meticulous planning are cornerstones of military training. Military leaders are adept at understanding their mission, developing comprehensive plans, and inspiring their teams to follow through with unwavering commitment. This strategic acumen is crucial in business, where leaders must navigate complex challenges and drive their organizations toward long-term goals.

Brad Howard, an Army vet and business development manager for Security Contractor Services, Inc., and this year’s AFA president, explains, “With strategic thinking and mission focus, business leaders can set clear, achievable objectives and develop detailed plans to reach them. By communicating a compelling vision and involving their team in the planning process, they can inspire their people to achieve extraordinary results.”

STRONG SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND SERVICE ORIENTATION

John Gallina, a National Guard veteran and CEO of Purple Heart Homes, described a feeling voiced by all the leaders highlighted in this article. “Military service builds a deep sense of pride that can be extended out to the community to make a difference. This camaraderie and collective identity are potent motivators that enhance teamwork. By engaging the broader community, individuals are shown that they matter.”Veterans often bring a strong sense of service orientation to their teams; they understand the value of service to others and how that makes everyone feel valued and connected.

AFA IS WHERE YOU LEAD

While military training is not necessary for developing leadership competencies, understanding and applying these principles can significantly enhance leadership development for you and your organization. If you’re looking for a way to grow your leadership knowledge and skills, look no further than the American Fence Association. The veterans highlighted here are involved with AFA and through their efforts, are helping to make the world a safer, more beautiful place.

Michael Reed has been involved with the American Fence Association for eight years, the last two serving as the executive director. Michael loves AFA’s history and culture and believes in the power of associations to solve problems big and small. He’s focused on building an AFA that develops leaders, increases professionalism, and plays a leadership role in our industry's growth and success. His passion is leadership, and he’s currently finishing his doctoral dissertation on trust and leadership development.

NEW INNOVATIONS IN RAPID DEPLOYMENT AND TEMPORARY FENCING

For over 40 years, Ameristar Perimeter Security, U.S.A. has strived to remain at the forefront of innovative fence and gate products that are high-quality, aesthetically pleasing, and of superior design strength that maintain ease of installation. With the increasing demands of the high security industry, their goal is to continue to provide the most advanced products that help customers feel safe, secure, and experience a more open world.

“In recent years, critical sites such as data centers have expressed a need for a new kind of security fence,” explains Mike Elmore, product manager with Ameristar Perimeter Security. “A system that can be rapidly deployed, deter would be intruders, provide superior delay, and easily be relocated unlike traditional ‘temporary’ fence offerings. Hence the introduction of Ameristar’s GridLock® rapid deploy fence, a one-of-a-kind industrial security barrier.”

Designed for fast one-sided installation, this system starts with industrial grade 2-7/8" plated posts. This unique plated post design provides options for installation with ground anchors, or optional baseplate extensions utilizing an innovative twist and lock design, eliminating the need for ballasts.

“The real magic of this system is the patented Talon Bracket,” Elmore says. “These innovative brackets feature a quick attach, twist-lock tamper resistant design and allow for infinite directional changes during install, eliminating the need for multiple fastening components and simplifying the installation process.”

High Security mesh panels feature a .5” X 3” X 10.5 ga welded wire mesh boasting high levels of cut-through and climb resistance. The Gridlock mesh panel design incorporates three V-folds, providing for increased lateral strength and the ability to self-nest during storage. CASE STUDY: Wallace Perimeter Security Spearheads Project for LRT Transportation Hub

Overview

The project was with an LRT (light rail transit) Intermodal Stop for a regional agency responsible for coordinating and integrating all modes of transport for one of North America’s largest cities. This multi-year project is nearing completion and has involved coordinating the manufacturing and delivery of different types of gates and fencing configurations over that time. Project stakeholders included the Transit Authority, Wallace Perimeter Security, the site architect, the general contractor and the fence contractor. In addition to the securing the intermodal facility itself, Wallace also supplied the fencing for parts of the six miles of track along the line.

Project Scope

What made this project unique was that the gate systems had to accommodate side-by-side laneways and work for both roadway and rail lines. In addition, the fence materials had to offer the highest level of security but still allow for good visibility while meeting a high aesthetic standard.

Our Solutions Gates

When it comes to optimizing space and enhancing security, Wallace Perimeter Security’s FoldSmart automated folding gates stand out as an exceptional solution. “We built four FoldSmart automated gates, two over the train track and two over the roadways. The trackless system of our FoldSmart gates provided the perfect solution for maintaining train track clearance, and their small nesting footprint fit seamlessly into the existing site, eliminating the need for expensive infrastructure changes.”

Folding gates are designed to save both space and time. Rail projects benefit from these gates because they ensure rapid and secure access control, which is crucial in high-traffic environments. The ability to quickly open and close prevents unauthorized access and enhances the overall safety of the area. This is particularly important in rail yards and along track lines, where

the movement of trains needs to be carefully managed to prevent accidents and ensure smooth operations. Unlike other gates, folding gates require significantly less room, saving valuable space for other uses. Their compact installation allows for effective security setups even in the most confined spaces.

Wallace also built a pre-hung pedestrian gate to complete the access triple play (people, trains and automobiles). Wallace’s pre-hung pedestrian gates are designed to ensure smooth and secure passage for foot traffic while seamlessly integrating with the overall security system. These gates provide a reliable and durable solution, enhancing the safety and accessibility of the site.

Fencing

The solution for both the rail yard and train track line was Wallace’s Rampart 354 Security Panels with the Defender bracket solution. This fencing solution is designed to offer the highest level of protection. These 6-foot high, custom RAL 7045 anti-climb panels have proven to be the ideal solution for both rail yards and train track lines. The fence contractor installed 2300 linear feet of these panels around the perimeter of a rail yard and along parts of the track line, creating a secure corridor through a heavily populated urban landscape.

The strength of these panels lies in their construction. The small mesh size combined with additional horizontal double wires makes these panels exceptionally rigid. With a mesh opening of 3 x .5 inches, the panels prevent climbing and cutting. The horizontal wires are 2 x 8 gauge (4 mm) with an extra wire every 6 inches, adding an additional layer of strength. The vertical wires are 1 x 4 gauge, contributing to the overall sturdiness. These specifications ensure that the panels are not only anti-cut but also anti-climb. In addition, the custom grey color blends seamlessly into the background, enhancing the aesthetic appeal while maintaining security.

One significant benefit of these panels for rail projects is their ability to prevent people from

jumping onto the tracks, a critical safety concern in heavily populated areas. By securing the perimeter effectively, these panels help in deterring unauthorized access and reducing the risk of accidents and disruptions.

By combining meticulous design with high-quality materials, Wallace’s Rampart 354 Defender Welded Wire panels meet and exceed the most stringent standards. Whether securing a commercial property, public space, or transportation infrastructure, these panels provide the peace of mind that comes with top-tier security features.

Challenges

While being available to accommodate requests is important for any project, it is especially important with extended project timelines. The Wallace team was constantly in touch with their fencing contractor and the customer, reviewing layouts, changes and adapting as needed. One example was making custom flange plated posts that were in use around the property. These custom-made additions had to fit to the concrete edges of the piles that were already in place for light stands and transformers and had to tie into the sides of the gates themselves as no more concrete piles could go into the ground.

Summary

As urban populations continue to grow up and around aging transit infrastructure, many transit authorities are looking to upgrade their facilities and improve their perimeter security. Automated gates and fencing are a critical part of these infrastructure upgrades. However, the solutions are not always easy or obvious. Every urban landscape has its unique challenges created by site limitations, tunnel and bridge configurations, topography and other quirks that put a premium on working with partners that can be flexible and can adapt their solutions as the project evolves. Latest Advances in Physical Security for Critical Infrastructure Protection

The physical protection of critical infrastructure facilities is essential to the quality of life and the economic future of everyone in North America. For example, physical attacks and shooting of transformers inside electric substations with the intent of causing large scale power outages made national news. This doesn’t even cover local incidences of break-ins with the intent of stealing copper.

According to Markus Erbeldinger, Ph.D., senior product and marketing manager with AMICO Security, the planning for physical security should follow the Deter, Detect, Delay, Deny principle. He explains:

Deter is the first step, it aims to discourage the adversary’s actions of attempting to breach a facility with intimidating signage and fence designs.

Detection is the next step. The monitoring of assets can be done remotely with CCTV (closed circuit television) PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) cameras , PIDS (perimeter intrusion detection system), alarms, motion detectors, lights, etc. Detection includes an assessment which is most often done via automatic software analysis. The time between an alarm and assessment must be short for an effective on-site response.

Delay is often accomplished with heavy duty physical security hardware. The goal is to thwart forced entry attempts with physical security products such as passive vehicle barriers, cut and climb resistant fencing, and cameras. The delay time required is directly linked to the facility specific response time of emergency responders.

Deny is the end result of the combination of the first three steps, in which unauthorized access is denied.

The ASTM F2548-20 Standard for Expanded Metal Fence Systems for Security Purposes addresses the Deter and Delay part of a physical perimeter security system. This standard is applicable to fencing for commercial, industrial, governmental or institutional facilities as applicable to homeland security needs. “Expanded metal fencing addresses the drawbacks of chainlink fencing by providing a significant improvement against cutting and climbing the fence,” says Erbeldinger. Key design recommendations of the standard are that the expanded metal panels weight at least 1.4 lbs/sf. Depending on security needs and requirements the weight can go up to 3.9 lbs/sf. The weight and thickness of the expanded metal panel has a direct correlation to cut through times, and indirectly to climbing, as higher weight panels have often smaller openings which make climbing difficult. Erbeldinger says AMICO Security Chameleon2 7100 anti-cut anti-scale fence is a good example of this. The minimum height of the fence is recommended to be at least 8 feet.

ASTM F2548 also recommends the use of a horizontal rail system between the fence posts to provide more rigidity. “Most critical infrastructure facilities prefer a square post bypass rail system as it simplifies the installation of the fence and the addition of electrical conduits required for lighting and detection equipment, such as AMICO Security Chameleon2 7100 fence with square posts from secure side,” says Erbeldinger.

He adds that labor is a major contributor to the costs of a physical security system and should be part of design considerations. “For example, the number of fasteners per linear foot of fence is a key number to consider. Many utilities often specify 10 feet, or even higher, fences with barbed and razor wire toppers. Barbed and razor wire toppers, which are standard practice, are not covered by this standard.”

LED lights which are triggered by motion detectors are a great example of an effective and relatively inexpensive tool that can help with costs. A bypass rail system with square posts is a great example of a fence system for physical security as electric conduits for detection system and lighting can be easily integrated into the fence.

Chameleon2® 7100 Duel Line Fence

The ASTM F2781-15 Standard for Testing Forced Entry, Ballistic and Low Impact Resistance of Security Fence Systems addresses the Delay aspect of physical security of substations. Breach testing is defined in the amount of time it takes to create a 2’ x 2’ opening in a security fence barrier. Erbeldinger says the standard allows for three classes of tools: Low Threat Level (L), Medium Threat Level (M) and Aggressive Threat Level (A). Due to the prevalence of portable power tools most tests focus on the Medium Threat Level (M) category.

Considering that Delay is an important aspect of the security planning, Erbeldinger says critical infrastructure facilities have taken two principal methods to increase breach times of their fencing systems with the goal in mind to buy sufficient time for first responders to capture the bad actors. “One strategy is to have two independent lines of security fencing run in parallel about 10 feet. The AMICO Security Chameleon2 7100 dual fence lines is a great example of this method,” he says. “The second method is to rely on specially designed fences with the goal of making power tools less efficient. A popular method is to create extra thick fencing infills which are difficult to cut or use specifically designed infill material which is tough on power tools. Fiberglass Reinforced Plastics is a good example as it is extremely tough on most power tools. Another example is to space two independent meshes a few inches apart, as with AMICO Security DualGuard mesh. While access to the first panel is straight forward, access to the second panel is extremely difficult if bad actors have to rely on a small 2’ x 2’ opening. They either have to cut a larger opening into the first mesh or have to cope with limited access to the second panel. Either way will require significantly more time to breach the fence.”

When implementing ballistic protection, Erbeldinger says it is highly important to take distance and terrain of a critical facility into account. The distance from the perimeter to the protected equipment weakens the effect of bullets. The terrain around a critical infrastructure facility is also important to consider. An adjacent hill requires a higher ballistic fence, at least on the hill. Perimeter fencing with small openings to screen the inside of a substation are also an important part of ballistic protection. Fences with small openings are often a cost-effective ballistic protection method especially in smaller less important facilities.

“Every single piece of security equipment, from perimeter fencing, to detectors, alarm systems and lights plays an important role in ultimately denying bad actors access to a critical infrastructure facility,” stresses Erbeldinger. “It is highly important to adjust to site specific needs rather than do one-type-fits-all designs. A cost-benefit analysis is also very important as it is not economically feasible to protect every single critical infrastructure facility to the maximum extent possible.”

Effective Use of Event Barricades for Crowd Control

Event barricades are essential for ensuring the safety and smooth operation of events. When used effectively, Jim Erhart with SelectSpace® Partitions, says these barricades can provide extremely effective crowd control measures to help manage crowd movement, create designated areas, and enhance security. He provides an overview of the benefits of using decorative metal fence panels from SelectSpace for event management:

CREATING A PERIMETER

By creating a defined area for guests, event barricades will establish clear boundaries and control the movement of attendees. These event barricades are lightweight but still sturdy, and can be easily put into place, reducing labor costs. The perimeter established prevents unauthorized access and maintains a secure environment within the event premises.

ESTABLISHING ENTRANCE QUEUES

Once the perimeter is defined, event barricades can be used to establish entrance queues to enhance security. Event barricades allow you to strategically place each panel at specific entrance points, which ensures a controlled flow of attendees to prevent overcrowding and maintain order. In addition, event barricades can be used to establish multiple entrances if needed, for performers, VIPS, etc. As an added feature, SelectSpace panels provide a modern aesthetic that can serve as a beautiful backdrop for photos.

ADVERTISING SPACE ON EVENT BARRICADES

SelectSpace barricades allow for custom graphics panels, providing an excellent opportunity for organizers to showcase sponsors. These custom logo panels are laser cut into metal, creating an incredibly elegant look that gives sponsors a highly visible and impactful advertising platform. The panels can display logos, event details, or engaging graphics that create a cohesive branding experience to elevate any event.

DESIGNATING VENUE AREAS

Defining specific areas within the venue creates order and helps to manage crowds. If needed, event stanchions can be used to create separate sections of the venue area. For example, an event may need an area specifically for VIPs or media, or for a meet-and-greet or a private backstage area. In certain situations, event barricades might be needed to restrict access to some areas or limit the number of attendees in specific venue sections. This could be for areas such as kitchens, supply storage, or administrative areas. By using modular panels, you can ensure authorized individuals have access to these areas while keeping attendees in the event space. Modular partitions can easily be arranged and rearranged as needed.

“Our event barricade panels have become a preferred choice for event planners because of their versatility,” says Erhart. “They deliver security, functionality and aesthetic value, and are customizable and easy to put in place for any event space.”

HIGH SECURITY Isn’t a Brand –It’s a Problem Solver

Ever since 9/11, our industry has been consumed by the need to produce and deliver “high security” fencing for almost every end-use market that exists.

But what exactly does “high security” mean? I’ve heard of High Society, but I think that is something different.

I’ve heard of High Noon. That was close because that is when the train with the bad guys was coming to town.

I’ve heard of high school. We did have some fences there, but we were not really in a tough neighborhood, so there was no barbed wire (like in “Blackboard Jungle”).

High Security fencing has two meanings: First, it means that people understand quite well that we live in very uncertain times, and security is something that has risen to the top of people’s priority list.

Second, it means that people want a product that provides the highest level of security available for their businesses, homes, facilities, or institutions.

Combined, those two meanings describe an environment that has never provided a better opportunity for the fencing industry to come to the forefront of the safety and security fields. There has never been a better chance for the fencing industry to be a problem solver for people and project managers. In just one portion of the high security market (the chain link portion), demand has been growing at a yearly rate of more than 10%.

Part of the challenge in growing your company’s business in the high security market is establishing your company’s high security credibility with potential customers. This is especially true if you are new to that particular part of the market because customers (as noted above) have a different level of expectation from perimeter security systems labeled high security than they do with other levels of fencing. Here are a couple of ways you can establish your credibility in this high security field.

1) Be able to clarify to customers exactly what makes your product high security. You can’t just call it that and be believable. Remember to focus on benefits, not features. They don’t really want to know what your fencing material is called; they want to know what problems it can solve on their job (deterring intruders, protecting people and property, integrating with electronic security systems, etc.)

2) Be ready to back up what you claim your products can do. The high security market is made up, for the most part, of some pretty sophisticated customers. They may not know a whole lot about fencing, but they are not going to invest in any perimeter security system unless they are confident of its value. You need to know what ASTM standards and guidelines are applicable to what you are claiming your systems can do. You need to show, if possible, what testing has been done with the system you are recommending and what the results were. It never hurts to have a testimonial from another similar customer.

3) Do not kid yourself – even in the high security market, “green” sells. Almost every type of customer you will encounter in this market – industrial, military, municipal, institutional, correctional, commercial, educational, etc. – will be concerned about the environmental impact of high security fencing systems. Will the fencing rust or corrode, leaching into the surrounding landscape? Will it be so heavy or impenetrable that local wildlife will be impacted? Can local fauna remain as is or will that be disrupted? Is the fencing recyclable if it needs to be replaced? Those questions are just as prevalent in this market as they are in the residential market in 2024. Government mandates, agency requirements, landowner concerns, and corporate policies are increasingly likely to mean contracts will include environmental impact clauses. Know your products’ characteristics in this regard. Again, be ready to back them up.

4) When it doubt, partner with your suppliers and manufacturers. The high security market puts that manufacturers-supplier-contractor partnership to the test. The communications among these three cornerstones of our industry will be able to create a lot of win-win-win-win situations (that last win is for the customers). The contractor has to hone in on the customer’s needs, and the supplier understands those priorities. The supplier and manufacturer need to be on the same page regarding the products’ capabilities, characteristics, and specifications.

There are other things to consider when focusing on the high security market. Some of those include: does the product meet domestic content requirements (a big issue on governmental projects in the U.S.)? Is there local availability (to reduce transportation costs and potential project delays)? Is high security fencing harder to repair or maintain?

As I have said before in this column, this is, unfortunately, a good time to be in the high security portion of the perimeter security business. But if that is the case, let’s provide these vital services to the public by establishing credibility to be problem solvers, being able to deliver on what we promise, and working together to create a safer work and living environment for everyone.

ENTRY PRO

Understanding the New Non-Compete Clause Rule

On May 7, 2024 the Federal Trade Commission issued the Non-Compete Clause Rule. The final rule provides that it is an unfair method of competition for persons to, among other things, enter into noncompete clauses (“non-competes”) with workers on or after the final rule's effective date. This final rule is effective September 4, 2024.

John Arensmeyer, founder and CEO of Small Business Major comments, “The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) final rule banning noncompete agreements is a victory for the U.S. economy because it will help fuel small business growth. Small businesses overwhelmingly want a level playing field, and non-competes don’t deliver because they are a threat to the free, fair, and open competition that is essential to a thriving and equitable economy.”

While I agree that free competition is the backbone of our nation, I can also see the flip side of the coin and I do not necessarily agree with his conclusions. The original intention of creating a non-compete agreement in the first place was to allow the employer the ability to invest time and money training trusted employees without having the fear that, after investing so much in training and educating, the employee would them take that skill and training and leave the company. Not having that ability to hold employees accountable

for the expense of training them could, and will, lead to lack of education and training. That is not a good thing.

Also, I have many clients that are small to mid-size fence company owners and managers, and they are constantly struggling to keep good workers.

Starting a fence company in and of itself is not a bad thing, if the new owner understands the complexity of things like overhead calculations, licensing, regulations, insurances, and all the unforeseen expenses that go with running their own business. Trust me, knowing how to be a great installer, having a truck and a post hole digger is not enough to start a fence company.

This trend could be even more prevalent, and this could lead to a greater fracturing in the supply chain and a saturation of many small, sometimes unqualified competitors in the marketplace. That could lead to a downward spiral of bid prices and diminishing profits for the entire industry. I am not in favor of that, and I believe most Fence News readers would agree.

So, I caution any reader that IF you are a skilled foreman, talented sales staff or an operations person of any kind in the fence industry, and were thinking of leaving your current situation, know what you are getting into before you leap into the

fire of self-employment.

I can promise you that owning a fence company is not as easy as it looks.

If, however, you are determined to go it on your own, write or give me a call and possibly I can help steer you in the right direction. Good competition is healthy for the industry, but inequitable and/or unprepared competition can be devastating for the unqualified new companies.

BREAK THE ADDICTION TO STRESS

Do you equate stress with success? That surge of energy felt as a deadline approaches can become habit-forming.

Stress, often linked with success, can become addictive due to the rush it provides from hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. While some stress can enhance problem-solving abilities temporarily, prolonged stress wreaks havoc on health by depleting nutrients, raising blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels.

Warning signs of stress overload include poor sleep, weight gain, irritability, and detachment from work.

Research indicates that excessive workload, often seen as a path to success, can actually have the opposite result. High stress is the leading cause of disability leave and contributes to numerous health issues, with an estimated 80% of health problems being stress-related.

Stress management is critical for both mental and physical well-being. Breaking the stress cycle requires a conscious effort. Simple steps like organizing your workspace, creating to-do lists, and pacing yourself can make a significant difference. Prioritizing tasks and managing time effectively help avoid feeling overwhelmed.

When stress becomes overwhelming, taking mental breaks, such as going for walks or venting to a colleague, can help diffuse tension.

Self-care, including adequate sleep, proper nutrition, and regular exercise, is vital for minimizing the potential negative impacts of stress. Accepting limitations and simplifying life can also restore a sense of control and alleviate stress. Most importantly, recognizing that you cannot fulfill every demand or solve everyone's problems immediately can bring relief and improve overall well-being.

Barrette Outdoor Living Features Aluminum Post and Rail Fencing

When it comes to adding a touch of rural charm and character to your property, while still providing boundaries with a feeling of open space, few fence styles can rival the simplicity of post and rail fencing. They define spaces but also naturally blend in with the landscape. However, if made from traditional wood, they can be a maintenance hassle, demanding repair and replacement as they wear and deteriorate due to weather.

With a simplistic design, post and rail fencing features a sturdy construction that consists of vertical posts and horizontal rails to define property in a natural, unobtrusive way. The simplicity of this style works well in any setting and can enhance the popular country or modern farmhouse aesthetics.

Post and rail can be both functional and attractive, while providing clear views depending on how many rails are added. If you are looking for charm and rustic beauty, post and rail could be the way to define your property's boundaries with classic style.

One solution from Barrette Outdoor Living, a brand of Oldcastle APG, is a post and rail fence option that features the strength of durable, powder aluminum that also blends rustic charm and character. The fencing features SolarGuard, a material composition for aluminum products that provides fade resistance so that your outdoor living products will look good for years to come.

“The simple design and character of our aluminum post and rail fencing blends tradition with technology, as an option for any residential or commercial applications,” says Rachel Fousch, brand manager, Pro Fence, Barrette Outdoor Living.

Barrette Outdoor Living’s Aluminum Post and Rail fencing features a premium powder coat for maximum durability that meets and exceeds AAMA 2604 standards. it is available in seven colors — including Black and Matte Black — a popular trending color option that is being used more frequently in other exterior applications as well. Styles include 2, 3 and 4 rails in heights of 3, 4 and 5 ft. and widths of 8 ft. The fencing also includes matching gates available in 3' to 6' and 6' to 12' double widths.

The decorative cap options include Ball Post Cap (aluminum fencing), Post Cap, Solar Post Cap (aluminum fencing). All aluminum fencing products manufactured by Barrette Outdoor Living offer a transferable limited lifetime warranty and feature a premium powder coating.

Keylink and Superior Outdoor Products Celebrate Long-time Partnership with Tri-State Forest Products

Superior Outdoor Products and Keylink are celebrating a multi-decade partnership with TriState Forest Products, Inc. that’s long benefited both companies. Keylink, a manufacturer of aluminum railing systems, and Superior, vinyl railing, fence and pergola manufacturer, have long relied on Tri-State as a distributor partner in the Midwest region.

“Distribution is key to our business model, so having valuable partners like Tri-State is essential to getting product to our dealers,” says Javan Lapp, Keylink and Superior CEO. “TriState was our first distribution customer and we’ve worked with them for nearly 30 years. We appreciate their commitment to growing with us.”

Tri-State says they’re proud to stock Keylink and Superior products because of the quality and innovation that the products represent.

“We’re an American-owned company and we want to support American manufacturing, engineering, and design,” says Rob Latham, Tri-State’s president. “Keylink and Superior make products that we are proud to have on our shelves and supply to our customers, either as stock items or job lots.”

One innovative new product that Latham is excited about is Keylink’s brand-new Discovery Series railing, a product that Tri-State recently brought into stock. “Discovery checks all the boxes for us,” he explains. “It meets a need in the market while being a unique installer-friendly railing that’s going to move off the shelf.”

“Their readiness to bring Discovery into stock illustrates Tri-State’s commitment to their customers and to their business growth,” says Lapp. “As we roll out new products, we know we can depend on Tri-State to work with us, and as a result, both companies—and our customers—benefit.”

The value of their long-term partnership is evident in the business relationship they’ve built.

“We trust each other,” says Latham. “We know that Keylink and Superior are going to supply us with the best products and be terrific partners, and they know they can rely on us to successfully take their products to market.”

RailFX® Oasis™ Combines Simplicity and Style in a Versatile Railing System

The new RailFX® Oasis Railing System makes it easy for contractors and homeowners to create beautiful outdoor living spaces by offering a blend of style and simplicity in aluminum railing systems.

David Lord, senior product manager at PrimeSource Building Products, says the goal of the Oasis system was to simplify planning and installation without sacrificing aesthetics. “The Oasis system brings a high-end, custom feel to outdoor spaces, while minimizing installation time and cost.”

What makes the RailFX Oasis system unique is its versatile infill options, including picket or horizontal cable infills to match diverse aesthetic preferences. It also features three-inch posts, which are available in 36- and 42-inch railing heights. The posts can be spaced up to eight feet apart with a cable brace. For cable railing installations, the posts are pre-drilled, ensuring cable runs are perfectly aligned, evenly spaced and level.

The RailFX Oasis system also features tension-fit balusters, which make it easy to secure the railing systems together tightly. That means the railing components won’t rattle like many aluminum railing systems, helping contractors create peaceful, relaxing outdoor living spaces.

The RailFX Oasis Railing System is made of extruded aluminum that will never rust and exceeds IBC and IRC requirements to provide the structure you need. It features single corner posts, maximizing cable runs and reducing the overall project cost.

The result is a beautiful railing system that is designed to last. Made of extruded aluminum, posts and pickets are finished in textured black to complement any deck or outdoor space. The system is backed by the RailFX Limited Lifetime Warranty, giving homeowners peace of mind, and minimizing callbacks for contractors.

Is an Automated Gate the Correct Solution?

Automated gates offer many benefits to a site, whether it is residential or commercial. Improved access control, ease of entry and egress, a resultant heightened sense of security, these all feature heavily on the list of pros, as does aesthetic charm and curb appeal.

Gate Safe, a non-profit organization in the U.K., is in favor of the installation of automated gates but there are clearly some instances where an automated gate does not represent the best solution for the client.

“We have put together a list of questions to consider when discussing the introduction of a new automated gate to a specific site,” says Richard Jackson, founder of Gate Safe.

Is the customer looking to introduce vehicular access control or pedestrian access control, or a combination of both? Vehicular access control is ideally suited to an automated gate system, but if pedestrians will be required to use the same point of entry / exit, consideration should be given to providing segregated pedestrian access.

Who will be using the gate and what level of usage is anticipated? A smart automated gate which is rarely used will not deliver the required return on investment. In addition, if the gate is to be frequently used by persons requiring security clearance, is an operated barrier a more appropriate installation? Should the gate be installed as a fully automatic operation or would a hold-to-run system of control be better suited to the setting?

Is the size of the gate that is being specified capable of handling the loading associated with an automated system? Is the gate itself suitably robust and of the rigid construction required for this type of installation? What plans does the customer have in terms of how the gate will be

operated and access control granted? If visitors to the site are going to be required to use an entry device such as an intercom or keypad, this must be mounted in a safe position well away from the gate to prevent the risk of coming into direct contact with the gate whilst operating the controls. Does the gate setting allow for this?

Finally, there are two critical questions which will determine whether an automated gate is determined to be the most appropriate means of access control. While the customer might be comfortable with the cost of the gate itself and the associated installation fees, are they aware of the additional investment required to ensure the safety of the gate, ie the cost of photocells or light curtains or laser scanner and safety edges and associated labor costs?

“No responsible installer should be prepared to install any automated gate without the requisite – and legally required - safety features,” says Jackson.

And equally important, is the customer aware of the requirement for the gate to be regularly maintained (minimum of six months) by a competent and suitably trained installer? Once again, no installer should be discussing the relevance of an automated gate system if the client is not willing to uphold its continued safety via regular maintenance checks.

These checks are a legal requirement for any commercial installation – which would of course include residential gates. It is also worth remembering even if the property is officially a residential dwelling, if it is also used as a place of work, for example, if the client works from home, it will be deemed a commercial setting.

Encon Electronics Celebrates its 40th Anniversary with Three Industry Events

Encon Electronics, in celebration of its 40th anniversary, hosted a vendor dinner, golf tournament and NorCal Expo in May. These events, with a vibrant 1980’s theme, were a testament to the company’s achievements in the gate, door, and access control industry.

Twenty-five leading manufacturers participated and sponsored the events, including AES, All-O-Matic, Ameriline, BD Loops, BEA, BFT, Byan Systems, D&D Technologies, DoorKing, EMX, FAAC , HySecurity, Infinity RFID, LiftMaster, Linear, Locinox, Maximum Controls, Micanan, Miller Edge, Nice, Northstar Controls, Security Brands, Torxun, USAutomatic, and Viking Access Systems.

A best-ball scramble tournament was held at the Las Positas Golf Course in Livermore, California. The tournament kicked off with a Caddy Shackinspired “Be the Ball” putting contest where

participants putted while blindfolded. No one successfully made a putt, but Paul Jones putted his ball closest to the hole, earning him a Par 1 golf game courtesy of DoorKing.

First-place honors in the subsequent golf game went to the R&S of Hayward team, Paul Jones, Mike Laake, Shawn Trask, and Jerry Trask, Jr., with a combined best-ball score of -4.

For the first time since 2019, Encon held its NorCal Expo at their office in Hayward, California. The 1980’s-inspired trade show featured 25 exhibiting manufacturers. Throughout the event, over 30 raffle prizes were given away, thanks to the generous support of the Encon sponsors.
