Greetings, March is marching in and bringing with it talks of Summer Camp! It seems soon, but the school year will be over before you know it. A pro tip: it is never too early to book camp. Many camps fill up quickly! To help you decide where to send the kids this summer, PB Parenting has put together our 12th annual Summer Camp Directory which starts on page 18. There is a camp for every age, interest, location, and budget. If you go online to our website, we even have an interactive map and drop-down menu to help narrow your search. Coming up even faster than summer, Spring Break is about two weeks away! Still trying to figure out what to do? We have you covered there with Spring Break camps on page 30. If you are taking some time off for Spring Break and spending it with the kids, we also have some suggestions for fun things to do right here in your backyard! You don't need to travel far. We live where people want to vacation, and the weather is usually warm and sunny. It is the perfect time to go to the beach, science center, or zoo. The Importance of Day Camp: ReasonsSeven to Send Your Child to Camp

Whoever coined the term, “the lazy days of summer” must not have had young children! Certainly it’s great not to have the pressures of the school year, but many working parents still need childcare when school is out. Summer day camps not only fill this gap, but can provide an enriching atmosphere where children can thrive and grow during the summer months.

Social growth

Children attending day camp have the chance to socialize in a way that is not always possible at school. Whether engaged in team building in sports or problem solving puzzles, children are encouraged to interact with each other. This is likely to be a very different experience than being at school where individual accomplishments are often the focus.

Michelle Renfrow, licensed professional counselor and owner of Colorful Creations Art and Therapy services, “It also offers an opportunity to meet like-minded individuals who share a passion for something that they do.” She says of two of her campers who bonded over an interest in trains, “They weren't the same age; they didn't go to

the same school; they didn't have the same upbringing; but they had something in common that connected them. From a clinical standpoint, finding somebody that you have a connection with is greatly important to the development of our children.”

New skills and learning

The variety in day camps is really incredible. Some day camps offer a range of activities each day. Other camps may focus on learning specific skills like science or magic tricks, arts and crafts or sports. Children can often switch activities week by week, giving them exposure to many different experiences. The learning and growing doesn’t stop there. Says Renfrow of her art themed day camps, “We do a lot of taking moments for students to show off their artwork and allow others to give them constructive and positive feedback.” In this way the children learn not only the artistic concepts being taught but also how to give and receive feedback.

gymnastics, dance, soccer, or other sport related day camp will obviously get your child moving. But even day camps focused on arts and crafts or theater may offer daily swimming or time outdoors.

Time unplugged

Screens are becoming more and more integrated into our lives both in and out of school. But there are good reasons to limit children’s screen times. Day camps can vary in their use of electronics from those that don’t allow them at all, to those that rely on them for various activities. If you want your child’s eyes to have a break from screens, find out the day camp’s policies on screen time in advance.

Building confidence

Day camp can be a place to increase confidence as children are exposed to activities they may not have experienced during the school year. Many camps offer the opportunity to build skills in sports or in the arts. This can be especially beneficial to a child who struggles at school, giving them a

chance to excel and explore talents that might be less obvious during the school year. Renfrow has watched children blossom before her eyes. “I cannot tell you the excitement and relief they feel when they finally ‘get it’ and then they just flourish from there!" she says of her campers who have begun to master knitting and crocheting.

Flexibility

While school has the same rules all year long, day camp is more flexible. Your child might go to theater camp one week but baseball camp the next. Each will have its own routines and expectations. This can help encourage your child to stay flexible in their expectations. Children who need more time to adjust to new experiences may benefit from multiple weeks at the same camp. Many summer day camps operate on a week by week basis, so that if your child is not enjoying the experience, he or she can opt out when the week is over.

Positive Role Models

Day camps may employ teens or college aged youth for their first summer jobs. This can expose children to a new dynamic they may not have encountered, especially if they do not have older siblings. Renfrow believes having people of all ages is essential to running a great day camp. Even middle schoolers are included in her camps as well supervised counselors-in-training. According to Renfrow, this relationship can be every bit as good for the young employees as it is for the campers.

All in all, quality day camps offer an incredible chance for children to learn and grow all while having fun and getting a much needed break from the rigors of school. They can explore their interests in a healthy environment, and make new friends and fond memories while they’re at it!

Educational "Field Trips"

Just because school is out doesn't mean the learning has to stop. Day trips to some area attractions can teach the kids a few things and help them have fun while away from the classroom. School may be out, but Schoolhouse is in! The Schoolhouse Children's Museum offers hands on exhibits and hosts many fun activities, including an interactive storytime on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10 AM, free with paid admissions. The Cox Science Center and Aquarium has one of our favorite backyards to play in! Check out the Fisher Family Science Trail. Enjoy the outdoors while continuing your science exploration! The quarter-mile trail connects 15 new exhibits, including a Physics Forest, FPL SolarScape, splash pad, gem panning station, shark tooth dig pit, a dinosaur walk, picnic areas and much more! You can also play a round of mini-golf at their conservation course. Stay cool inside and check out their Dinosaur Explorer exhibit. How about feeding some sharks and stingrays? Sandoway Discovery Center is a beachside nature center located in a historic home. The nature center’s activities include daily shark and stingray feedings at 1 PM. Sandoway Discovery Center offers a glimpse into South Florida’s fragile marine and freshwater environments through educational exhibits and programs Tues.-Saturday at Noon. $6 per a person. Loggerhead Marinelife Center, is committed to the conservation of ocean ecosystems through public education, research and rehabilitation with a focus on threatened & endangered sea turtles. The newly renovated center, is located oceanside in Loggerhead park features an on-site sea turtle hospital, learning exhibits, gift store, aquariums and so much more. 2023 TurtleFest is just around the corner and LMC can’t wait to welcome guests back for the 18th year. This year’s theme: respect the locals— 40 years of sea turtle & ocean conservation.

TurtleFest is a free all-day event hosted on Saturday, March 18, (10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) located at Loggerhead Marinelife Center and surrounding Loggerhead Park in Juno Beach. This ocean-inspired event will have something for everyone such as educational kid’s activities, live music featuring some of our best local bands, art vendors, and MUCH more!

During this event, guests will have the opportunity to meet our patients, experience programs at the Center, and learn more about our mission. We have opened our newly expanded campus since the last TurtleFest. Don’t forget to stop by our new tanks that are home to nurse sharks, stingrays, porcupine pufferfish, and seahorses!

DAY CAMP CHECKLIST

• Hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes

• Sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 45

• Insect repellant wipes and/or insect repellent wristband (do not send an aerosol can of insect repellant–the spray will sting if it gets in your child’s eyes.)

• Bathing suit and towel

• Water bottle filled with ice-cold water

• Hat and Sunglasses

• Comfortable running shoes or closed-toe sports sandals WITH socks

• Extra set of clothes (especially a pair of socks and shirt if they get wet from the rain)

• Rain poncho (rolls up small)

• Medication: All camps should have your child’s medical information on file. Having an extra note with details in their backpack and attached to their Prescription medication and/or Epi-Pen is helpful.

• Food: Some day camps will provide lunch and snacks. If you pack a lunch it should be easy to eat on the ground. A sandwich (avoid peanut butter since most camps are nut-free), fruit and a juice box or water makes for a healthy lunch. Granola bars make an excellent snack. Some camps may have snack bars or vending machines. Notify the camp of any food allergies your child may have.

SPRING PLANNING = STRESS-FREE SUMMER

It’s almost spring! Now is the perfect time to do some planning so the “future summertime you” won’t be stressed! Summertime as a parent can be complicated. Between ever shifting schedules, busy social calendars, sleepovers, camps and the days when the kids are home in between, parents have a lot on their plates and the living isn’t always easy. The key is preparation. So, here 7 things you can do NOW to organize your summertime, to assure that your summer is organized and fun!

1. Start a family calendar for the summer months now so you can capture all activities that you and your children will participate in including camp, playdates and travel. This way you will know what is coming up and what weeks or days you still have to fill up. This can be as simple as a paper calendar or wipe board that can be hung in your home or use a digital calendar on your phone to share with everyone in family (this is great especially if your kids are older and have their own devices).

2. Book Your Plans-Look for activities at home or at a camp that will keep your children engaged and learning about the world around them. Solidify your family vacation plans, make sure you also ask for vacation time off (even if you

aren’t going anywhere). Don’t forget, summer is also Hurricane season in South Florida so make plans for potential storms while you are away on vacation---what neighbors or friends can handle things to protect your home while you are away?

3. Go shopping-Stock up on paper, craft items and anything else that your children love to use when they are at home. If your children are heading to camp, buy name labels that can easily be applied to anything and everything that they will take with them (check out Label Daddy). Start stocking up now on sunscreen and bug repellant and check your first-aid kit to see what needs to be replenished. Grab extras to make “to go” packs that can be popped into bags on the way out of the house in the morning. That way everyone is covered no matter who is taking care of the kids that day.

4. Assess the closets-Use this time to go through your kids’ summer clothing – sandals, sun protective clothing, bathing suits and hats – to make sure that they still fit so you know what you need to buy for when the temperature and humidity start to climb. Sometimes a “try on” session is needed – turn it into a fun Spring Break “fashion show” if you have any reluctant

participants! Take the kids with you to donate outgrown items so they can feel the good about passing on their items to someone else.

5. Plan for some self-care -Take some time this summer to take care of yourself, maybe an adult weekend away or just a plan for what you will do if you just get a few minutes in the evening after everyone is in bed.

6. Rally the troops- Plan with a group of parent friends and create rotating play dates with 3 or 4 kids. You will have to host once or twice a month depending on the size of the group, but on the other weeks you can drop off your kids and have a little free time all to yourself.

7. Start new traditions or keep up the old onesThink of some fun things to break up the hot and humid days of summer and enjoy the time with your friends and family. Make sure you have lots of INDOOR activities, especially for all of the rainy afternoons. Creating a fun ritual or activity can help make memories and before

you know it, the summer will be over!
