This year, we’re inspired by this beautiful quote from Maya Angelou: “To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power.” It’s a reminder that motherhood is a force— powerful, loving, sometimes chaotic, but always deeply impactful.
On May 11th, may you get a moment to breathe, sip your coffee while it’s still hot, or enjoy a peaceful mimosa brunch. And here’s hoping for a temporary truce in the never-ending sibling squabbles!
In this issue, starting on page 8, you’ll find fresh ideas to help make Mother’s Day extra special— from thoughtful gift guides to relaxing outings and pampering treats.
As the school year winds down (the last day is Friday, May 30th), we know many of you are already deep into summer planning mode. No stress—we’ve got your back! In the spirit of Palm Royale, darling… Mother’s Day isn’t just a holiday—it’s a moment. And whether your mother is a garden party queen, a spa-going sophisticate, or just someone who deserves the royal treatment, we’ve curated a list worthy of the Palm Beach elite. From brunch by the beach to baubles on Worth Avenue, here’s what’s topping our publisher’s wish list this year. Because let’s face it—second best simply won’t do.
massage, a facial, perhaps a mimosa by the water? Treat her to a day of serene indulgence where the only decision she’ll need to make is hot stone or deep tissue.
With its signature pink façade, swaying palms, and unapologetic glamour, The Colony feels like it was plucked right from the set of Palm Royale. Treat Mom to a stylish brunch where every table is a scene, and every mimosa feels like a moment.
Tucked away like a hidden gem worthy of a well-connected tip, Serenity Tea Room offers an elegant escape filled with fragrant teas, vintage china, and dainty delights. It’s the perfect setting for a Mother’s Day moment steeped in charm and floral-infused conversation.
Elevate Mother’s Day with a selection of artisanal pastries from Aioli, West Palm Beach’s cherished bakery-café. Recently honored with a Michelin Bib Gourmand award, Aioli is celebrated for its housemade sourdough breads, vibrant salads, and delectable sweets like the bold and bright lemon loaf.
Put together a gift box with a copy of Mr. & Mrs. American Pie (the novel Palm Royale is based on), a vintage-style bookmark, a cozy throw, a bottle of sparkling or rosé, with a cute wine tumbler. Invite her to start her own glam reading circle.
So this Mother’s Day, go beyond the ordinary—because if there’s one thing Palm Royale taught us, it’s that every mom deserves to feel like the main character.
According to the National Retail Federation, Mother’s Day spending is expected to be a total of $34.1 billion this year. The amount is up from last year’s $33.5 billion and follows closely behind the record of $35.7 billion in 2023. As with previous years, 84% of U.S. adults are expected to celebrate the holiday. On average, those celebrating plan to spend $259.04 on Mother’s Day gifts and celebrations, about $5 more than they budgeted in 2024. Most of those celebrating the holiday (57%) are shopping specifically for a mother or stepmother, followed by a wife (23%) or daughter (12%). The most popular gift categories remain flowers (74%), greeting cards (73%) and special outings such as dinner or brunch (61%). Consumers will spend a total of $6.8 billion on jewelry, $6.3 billion on special outings and $3.5 billion on gift cards. Total spending on flowers is expected to reach $3.2 billion, while total spending on greeting cards is expected to reach $1.1 billion. Consumers are also continuing to prioritize thoughtful gifts this holiday. Nearly half of consumers (48%) say finding a gift that’s unique or
different is most important to them, followed by 42% who say finding a gift that creates a special memory. Gifts of experience continue to be popular post-pandemic — 36% of men plan to gift experiences this year, up from 29% in 2019.
Below are some simple and thoughtful ways to celebrate Mom. Maybe you can subtly send this list out to someone...give them a little hint!
1. Give Mom a Break: Nothing says, “I love you,” like walking into the house and finding your partner has already cleaned it. I love when my son or daughter does chores without being asked. This Mother’s Day, relieve mom of her usual to-do’s by making it your responsibility. Are you too busy to do it yourself? Maybe hire a cleaning service to come in and do a deep clean or gift her a few cleanings for the next couple of months. Help Mom organize the clutter and pick up your toys! Maybe have the kids go through some items to donate. Less items less to clean!
2. Let Mom Sleep: It doesn’t matter if you have a newborn or a 10 year old, or if you are a stay at home mom or a working mom, I am guessing you are sleep deprived. Let mom sleep in, offer to take the children out so she can have a quiet house to rest in. While you are out, pick up some coffee or pastries and come home and surprise her. In the afternoon, let her take a nap. Is the baby still getting up in the middle of the night? Instead of her getting up give her a break and do the nighttime routine.
3. Brunchin’ it: How many times does Mom make pancakes and eggs for everyone? Now it is your turn! Make her favorite items for breakfast. Surprise her with coffee or tea in bed. If cooking isn’t in your skill set, take her somewhere nice to enjoy their cooking or let her have some alone time brunching with her friends. Bonus points if bottomless mimosas are included.
4. Pamper Mom: Moms take care of everyone else’s needs but what about hers? Pampering can fit many gift giving budgets from a full day at the spa (We love Eau Palm) to something as simple as a manicure at her favorite nail salon. You can even pamper her at home with a nice foot rub or run her a bath, light some aroma therapy candles and give her some undisturbed time in the tub. I assure you any thoughtful gesture of some much needed pampering won’t go unnoticed.
5. A Day Together: Set aside all other plans, grab the whole family and head to mom’s favorite park or the beach. Spending the time together (preferably outdoors) is what really counts, so have a picnic, go for a bike ride, take a hike. Enjoy the outdoors together as a family. If mom isn’t the outdoorsy type, take her to the movies or a museum. Just spend the day with her doing something she WANTS to do.
6. Keep the Peace: If you have more than one child you know about the ‘sibling squabbles” and how mom is often a referee in her own home. Talk to your children about a “peace treaty” for the day to give mom a break from the constant
back and forth bickering.
7. Plant some flowers. Instead of buying flowers that will die in a week use some extra space in the yard to plant a flower garden for mom. Maybe even look at plants that attract butterflies and make a butterfly garden. An extra bonus present would be to have the kids paint and decorate some rocks (don’t forget to seal them). There are also plaster kits the kids can use to make “stepping stones” with their feet or hand prints that would make some memorable garden keepsakes.
8. Take Mom to the Theatre! There are some great shows coming in May and June including Kenny G, Cimafunk, Comedian Nikki Glaser, and the Broadway Musical, Ain’t Too Proud – The Life And Times Of The Temptations Check out www. kravis.org for upcoming shows.
9. Put Mom Back in the picture and schedule a Family Portrait session! Mom takes a lot of photos of the kids but where is she? Make her feel glamorous and schedule a family photo session. Check out Lynn Studios, Inc www. lynnstudios1.com. When the photo session is finished make sure to frame them nicely or have canvases made to display in your home.
10. Create a piece of treasured art or a craft. If you’re not super creative, the experts can help! Head over to Picasso’s Creative Workshop in Lake Worth and give mom a handmade painted pottery piece (They even have funtional pottery pieces such as cute candle votive holders, jewelry holders and more) or sign the kids up for a fun art class at artNEST in Delray Beach and Boca Raton where they can create mom something special that she can treasure for many years. If mom is a creative herself sign her up for classes and workshops at the Armory Arts Center.
No matter how you celebrate your Mother’s Day, PB Parenting wishes the best to all the moms out there! We hope you have a relaxing day filled with love and surrounded by your loved ones!
End-of-year parenting tips to help you stay calm, connected, and maybe even have a little fun
The month of May comes with a unique blend of excitement and exhaustion. It’s the final sprint of the school year, and for many families in Palm Beach County, it’s packed with class parties, recitals, sports banquets, field trips, and the evergrowing pile of artwork and papers making their way home. And while visions of summer beach days may be dancing in your head, the reality of juggling it all can feel a bit overwhelming. Here are some sanity-saving tips to help you navigate the chaos and finish the school year strong— without losing your cool (or your car keys).
1. Calendar Clarity: Avoid the Surprise Spirit Day
May is notorious for being the “everything month.” One child has a “Wacky Hat Wednesday,” another needs snacks for a field trip, and someone’s class is hosting an ice cream social… at 10:30 a.m. Take 15 minutes to sit down with your school emails, group texts, and classroom
apps and consolidate everything into one central calendar—digital or paper, whatever works. Then, add 15–30 minutes of buffer time before each major event. It’s not just about showing up—it’s about not showing up flustered. Pro Tip: Hang a big family calendar somewhere visible (fridge, mudroom, kitchen wall). Color code for each child and check it every night so you know what’s coming.
The end of the school year is emotional— especially for younger kids who don’t always have the words to express it. Teachers they love, classmates they may not see again, or even changing schools can cause anxiety masked as misbehavior. Gently introduce the idea of summer routines: will there be camp? Check out page 20 for Summer Camp Ideas. Will they get screen time after breakfast? Let them help create a summer wish list or daily rhythm to look forward to. Try this: Make a “Summer Bucket List” poster together. Include big things like a zoo trip
3. Celebrate the Teachers (Because They’re Surviving May, Too!)
From tie-dye disasters to end-of-year testing and restless students, teachers are also riding the May mayhem wave. A heartfelt thank-you card, a hand-drawn picture, or even a simple email of appreciation goes a long way. If your class is organizing a group gift, consider pitching in—or offer something practical like a gift card to a local coffee shop or bookstore. Local Idea: Pick up a treat from a local favorite like Johan’s Joe, Subculture Coffee, or Aioli for a meaningful, delicious gift.
4. Capture the Memories (Before You Recycle the Backpack Papers)
There’s something sweet about the “lasts” of the school year—the last morning drop-off, the last packed lunch, the last scribbled worksheet. Take a minute to snap a photo or write a short
note about what your child learned this year, what they’re proud of, and what you want to remember. Bonus Idea: Create an end-of-year interview with your child—ask about their favorite book, subject, lunch, friend, etc. Save it year over year for a keepsake you’ll both treasure.
5. Find Joy in the Simple Stuff
Between the scheduled chaos, leave space for small family rituals. A backyard dinner under string lights. A spontaneous visit to the beach. A board game after dinner. These everyday moments—when you’re not rushing, just being—help anchor kids during transitions. Inspiration Stop: Check out one of our gorgeous local parks for a quick reset in nature.
6. Lower the Bar, Raise the Connection
Spoiler alert: You don’t have to do everything. You can skip the elaborate Pinterest-worthy end-of-year gift and still be a great parent. What matters most is showing up—with love,

patience, and a willingness to laugh when the schedule inevitably goes sideways. Kids don’t need perfection. They need you—present, supportive, and maybe a little silly.
The lazy days of summer may be calling, but don’t forget: August will be here fast. Use May to quietly prep for what’s ahead. Stock up on essentials when they go on sale—lunchboxes, sunscreen, bathing suits, pool toys. Sort through school supplies and donate what’s still usable to places like Resource Depot. Take advantage of early camp registration discounts or start researching fun, affordable staycation activities. Quick Win: Create a summer folder (digital or paper) with camp schedules, registration confirmations, vacation plans, and any paperwork you’ll need to keep handy. May is messy, magical, and full of meaning—so take a breath and soak up the final stretch before summer begins.
Saying farewell to the school year can be emotional—for kids and parents. These moments sneak up on you… keep an eye (and tissue) handy.
• That final walk to the classroom or bus stop.
• The last “Have a good day!” as they run off to join friends.
• Handing over the teacher gift with a heartfelt thank-you.
• Seeing your child’s growth in their class photo vs. now.
• One more spelling test or math packet.
• Taking down the art wall or emptying the backpack bin.
• Watching your child sign yearbooks with inside jokes you don’t understand.
• Hearing them say, “I’m really going to miss my teacher.”
• Packing the lunchbox one last time—maybe with a little note.
• Realizing just how fast it all flew by.

May is National Water Safety Month
Living in Palm Beach County means year-round access to pools, beaches, and water parks—but with that comes the responsibility of ensuring every family member stays safe around water. As we head into summer, May—National Water Safety Month—is the perfect time to refresh your water safety knowledge and practices.
Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause for children under 14. Most drowning incidents happen quickly and silently, often within seconds and without a splash or cry for help.
Florida, with its abundance of water, ranks among the highest in the nation for child drownings. The good news: nearly all of these tragedies are preventable with a few simple precautions and increased awareness.
1. Always Supervise Children Near Water
Designate a responsible adult as a “Water Watcher” whenever kids are swimming or playing near
water. This person should avoid distractions, including phones, and stay within arm’s reach of inexperienced swimmers.
Children can begin learning water survival skills as early as age one. Local programs such as local rec centers, and the Drowning Prevention Coalition offer low-cost or free lessons. Even basic instruction—such as floating, turning to the wall, or exiting the pool—can make a life-saving difference.
Home pools should be surrounded by a fence at least four feet tall, with self-latching, self-closing gates. Door alarms, pool covers, and water surface alarms can provide extra layers of protection, especially during non-swim times.
Quick action can be critical. CPR training empowers parents and caregivers to respond immediately in an emergency while waiting for first responders. The American Red Cross and local fire departments offer classes both in person and online.
Only swim at beaches with lifeguards. Teach children what beach flags mean and how to recognize rip currents. Avoid rough surf and strong undertows, and ensure children understand not to go into the ocean alone.
For boating, kayaking, or paddleboarding, everyone—especially children—should wear a properly fitted life jacket. Florida law requires children under age 6 to wear one at all times on vessels under 26 feet, but it is a good habit for all ages.
Discuss water safety often. Rules should include: never swim alone, no running on wet surfaces, and no diving in shallow areas. Ensure caregivers and older siblings know how to enforce these rules consistently.
• “I’ll hear if something goes wrong.” Drowning is almost always silent. Children don’t yell or thrash like they do in movies.
• “It’s safe because we’re nearby.” Most drownings happen when children slip away unnoticed during non-swim times.
• My child is a good swimmer.” Even strong swimmers can become overwhelmed by fatigue, water temperature, or currents.
• Enroll your child in swim lessons before summer begins
• Review and secure all home water features
• Take or renew a CPR course
• Talk to caregivers, grandparents, and babysitters about water rules
• Share this information to raise awareness in your community
Water safety starts at home. By taking simple, proactive steps, we can make every pool day, beach outing, and boat trip a safe and enjoyable experience. Let’s protect our children and set the tone for a safer summer across Palm Beach County.
Have a fun and safe summer at the pool or beach!

• Hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes
• Sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 45. Pro tip: Apply sunscreen before leaving home - send a bottle for reapplication pack a hat/ sunglasses
• Insect repellant wipes and/or insect repellent wristband (do not send an aerosol can of insect repellant–the spray will sting if it gets in your child’s eyes.)
• Bathing suit and towel
• Bring two water bottles one that is frozen to enjoy later as it melts.
• Comfortable running shoes or closed-toe sports sandals WITH socks
• Extra set of clothes (especially a pair of socks and shirt if they get wet from the rain)
• Rain poncho (rolls up small)
• Medication: All camps should have your child’s medical information on file. Having an extra note with details in their backpack and attached to their Prescription medication and/or Epi-Pen is helpful.
• Food: Some day camps will provide lunch and snacks. If you pack a lunch it should be easy to eat on the ground. A sandwich (avoid peanut butter since most camps are nut-free), fruit and a juice box or water makes for a healthy lunch. Granola bars make an excellent snack.
Some camps may have snack bars or vending machines. Notify the camp of any food allergies your child may have.
• Do not bring valuable items like electronics.
BY AMY BERGMAN
Walk into any family home on a random afternoon, and you might see toys scattered across the floor, dishes piled in the sink, laundry half-folded on the couch, and a calendar packed with obligations. To the casual observer, it’s just clutter. But to many mothers, it’s more than that—it’s the physical manifestation of something few people talk about: the invisible labor of motherhood. We tend to treat clutter as a purely physical problem. Something to be tackled with a bin, a label maker, and a Saturday afternoon. But if we look more closely, we’ll see that the mess on the surface often mirrors the chaos beneath it. The forgotten permission slips, the overflowing diaper bag, the drawer full of uncharged devices—these aren’t just disorganized items. They’re signals of mental overload. And it’s time we start seeing clutter not as a personal failure, but as a systems failure.
Hidden
of “Remembering Everything” - Invisible labor refers to all the planning, managing, and anticipating that mothers (most often) do to keep a household functioning. It’s the mental checklist running 24/7: Have we outgrown these shoes? Did we RSVP to the party? When is the next doctor’s appointment? It’s grocery
lists in your head, school events in your email, emotional support on demand—and very little time to breathe. This mental load takes up space. And when there’s no room left in our brains, it spills into our homes. The clutter becomes a feedback loop: more stuff = more decisions = more fatigue = less bandwidth to organize. The cycle continues.
as Emotional
- One powerful benefit of decluttering is the mental clarity it can bring. When we reduce the number of decisions we have to make (“Which jacket should they wear?”“Where does this even go?”), we reclaim mental space. But here’s the key: the solution isn’t just getting rid of things. It’s creating systems that reduce the cognitive burden. Here’s how to start:
Your Clutter Hotspots - Where does clutter pile up the fastest? Entryways, kitchen counters, kids’ rooms? These are often where your systems are breaking down. Don’t just clean them— ask why they’re hard to maintain.
Set Up Drop Zones and Routines - Create designated spots for everyday items: keys, backpacks, mail. Set up weekly resets: a Sunday 15-minute sweep can prevent weekday chaos.
3. Make Systems Visible and Shared - Put chore charts, meal plans, or school calendars where the whole family can see them—not just in mom’s mental vault. If you’re the only one who knows what’s happening, you’re also the only one responsible for it.
4.Delegate With Intention - “Asking for help” is not the same as delegation. If you have to manage the task and remind someone, you’re still carrying the load. Share responsibilities by assigning ownership: “You’re in charge of the morning lunch routine” instead of “Can you help pack lunches today?”
5. Let Go of the Myth of Perfection - A perfectly organized home doesn’t exist, especially with kids. Aim for “functional and calm,” not “Pinterest-ready.” Your home should work for you, not the other way.
A Collective Responsibility - This Mother’s Day,
instead of candles or kitchen gadgets, what if we gave moms what they really need: mental space, shared responsibility, and systems that support their wellbeing? Clutter isn’t just about stuff, it’s a signal. And when we start to listen to it, we open the door to homes that aren’t just cleaner, but kinder. Homes where moms aren’t drowning in invisible labor.
