Fun Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Your Kids

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about romantic love or relationships with friends. Now that you are a parent, there are many fun ways to celebrate your cutest valentine of all - your kids! Show your kids how much you love them by doing some of these fun V-Day activities together.

1. Host A Tiny Tea Party

Hosting a tea party can be fun. Right now, the Target dollar spot has some cute themed Valentine’s day items, including a tea tier tray and cake stand for your sandwiches and treats. If the weather is nice, You can take this outside or host it in your dining room. Some fun hats and accessories can make it even more fun!

2. Make Heart-Shaped Pancakes for Breakfast

Kids love to help out! Give them an apron and spoon and have them help mix. We even have a video on our website to show you step by step how to make them. Go to our website and click on news/blog for a fun Sunday morning breakfast on Valentine’s Day.

3. Decorate Their Door

Each day add a heart-shaped love note to your child’s door that tells them how you feel. You can start at the beginning of the month or the beginning of the week before Valentine’s Day. Each

day post a heart or two that tells them how you feel or things you love and appreciate about them Some examples are “you are a good friend,”“you are smart,” or “you make us laugh”.

4. Read Them Valentine’s Day Theme Books

Reading books to your child is an excellent way to bond. Read some of your favorites or pick up a few new ones. Some of our favorites are “Pete the Cat: Valentine’s Day is Cool,” Llama Llama I Love You,” “Guess How Much I love You,” and “Sesame Street: My Fuzzy Valentine”.

5. Celebrate With Some Pampering.

Have a fun at-home spa day! Put on some fun masks. Recently at Target, I saw a fun unicorn themed mask that even sparkles! Have fun with mini manis and pedis. You can even draw hearts on your nails with nail art pens!

6. Have A Photo Shoot

Create your own shoot with fun props such as chalkboard, balloons, tutus, and candy or get in front of the camera and have an expert take your photos (Lynn at Lynn Studios is great www. lynnstudios1.com.)

7. Be Kind to Others

Valentine’s Day happens to fall on the start of

8 February 2023| PB Parenting |

Random Acts of Kindness Week (Feb. 14-20).Do you know a friend or perhaps an elderly neighbor that might not have a Valentine this year. Make their day by dropping off a homemade card, some candy or flowers. You could also arrange to give treats to first responders. Call up your local station or hospital and see if you can drop off some cookies or individual cakes like Nothing Bundt Cakes to nurses, EMTs, firefighters, or police officers to show your appreciation. For more ideas go to www.randomactsofkindness.org.

8. Make Gift Certificates For Each Other. Decorate and come up with some good “gifts” for each other. This mom would really love a “I will do a chore for you card” or maybe “I will clean my room card”. Other ideas include: “Play your favorite board game,” “Make Pancakes together,” or “Pick Dinner tonight”. You can come up with many ideas.

9. Get “Heart Healthy” Together

February is American Heart Month. So use Valentine’s Day as a way to exercise together as a

family. Plan a family walk, hike, or bike ride. Is the weather not so great? Stay indoors but crank up the music and have a heart-pumping dance party!

10. Have a Special Valentine’s Family Dinner

Finish the day with a special meal together. No ordering pizza, Valentine’s day deserves something more fancy! If you are staying in have the kids help make beautiful place settings or decorate the table. You could make dinner (pasta is always a big hit with my kids) or order takeout from your favorite restaurant. If you are feeling very adventurous, everyone could dress up and go out together!

If you have plans with your partner on Valentines these things can be done leading up to Valentine's Day.

I hope you found some good ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your kids. This day is a great reminder to tell those we love them, especially our kids.

Check out these easy party planning tips to help make planning your child’s birthday party as easy and stress free as 1, 2, 3!

Start with an invite list. It dictates everything: How large a venue, what kind of theme or activities you pick, etc.

What about siblings? Before age 7, inviting siblings is a nice gesture if you have the space and funds. However, other parents understand your predicament firsthand. If it’s not feasible, don’t be afraid to say no. If childcare is an issue for the sibling perhaps offer to have them drop the birthday guest off.

If your child’s friend list is a mile long consider making it Just Family - Don’t be afraid to make your child’s party just family plus a few friends.

Skip the paper invite. Everyone is online

Easy as 1...2...3 Party Planning Tips

these days (even grandmas have email and Facebook!) Utilize any of the many free services out there or create a private Facebook event!

Get creative. Regardless of your theme, there are lots of places to go for inspiration including Pinterest. By the time your child is 3 or so, they’ll have lots of input on what they want too maybe too much input!

Skip the Goodie Bags! There! We said it! We love the generous spirit behind goodie bags and party favors, but we could all do without random tchotchkes that get played with for five seconds (if that) and then stuffed in a drawer. How about hosting a simple craft activity and letting the result serve as the parting gift? Or taking a group photo and printing out copies (at the party or after) for each child to keep?

10 February 2023| PB Parenting |

Food- Offer a variety of foods. Ordering a few pizzas takes care of the main course, but think about including fruit, nuts, cheese, crackers, or popcorn for snacking. Serve food in single serving containers (not group bowls) to keep germs at bay. Visit the venue- Plan a visit to your venue if you are throwing it outside your home before the party so you can scope it out and anticipate any issues.

Instead of lugging a trunk full of gifts suggest NO GIFTS - If you are overflowing with toys, try something new, host a book exchange. On the invite, ask that everyone bring a book in lieu of a gift, which they will then exchange for a new one. Keep it short! You need one or two activities that will take you to cake time!

Party experts recommend 90 minutes for children under 5. Two hours for ages over 5. Set an End Time. Always err on the side of a shorter party, and note a specific end time on the invitation. As kids get older, most parents will expect to drop off their kids and pick them up at the end of the party. If you’d like some grown up assistants, be sure to arrange for them ahead of time.

Take a lot of Photos. When the party is done all you have left is pictures. Make sure to designate someone to or hire a photographer like our friend Lynn at Lynn Studios (www.lynnstudios1.com).

Write thank-you notes. While sending email invitations is standard these days,

For more information about the Schoolhouse Children’s Museum. please visit

schoolhousemuseum.org

129 E. Ocean Avenue, Boynton Beach

most guests still appreciate a good oldfashioned physical thank-you card— particularly one written by the birthday child. It can even be a picture if your child

can’t write yet. Can’t stand the thought of more wasted paper inevitably ending up in the trash? Send a personalized thank-you email and include pictures of the party.

Consider Throwing Parties Every

Few Years - Everyone should feel special on her birthday, but there’s no rule that says your kid has to have an elaborate party every year.

Planning a birthday party doesn’t have to make you want to pull your hair out! It also helps to connect with the right vendors to make sure your party goes off without a hitch! Check out Page 14 for PB Parenting’s bi-annual party planning guide which is also online all year long at pbparenting.com.

Valentine’s Day---the holiday filled with LOVE, right? Well, I would argue that it can be a holiday filled with the LOVE of Organizing! We are just one month into this new year where many have goals to declutter and create an organized life or space. Let’s keep that momentum going using Valentine’s Day as another motivating force. Who knows? It may even help improve your love life.

It's no secret that disorganization can cause tension in relationships. I mean, who wants to have another first-thing in the morning argument over “where are my keys?”. Having an organized space that you share with another person will not only diffuse these types of daily squabbles, but it will also give you the gift of time, which is something every

couple could use.

So, how do you start? Believe it or not, one of the best and easiest places to start in a home is in the primary bedroom, which is perfect in anticipation of Valentine’s Day. Your bedroom is where you start and end your day, and it can set the tone for what kind of morning or evening you are going to have. It is also a space that is easier to organize because you can easily identify items that belong somewhere in the home, not in the bedroom, allowing you to quickly declutter the space. And while a romantic primary bedroom is not THE secret to a happy relationship, of course, when you work to improve your bedroom and get it looking like a space that only requires some regular maintenance rather

20 February 2023| PB Parenting |

than a complete overhaul, you’re well on your way to inviting more romance into your relationship.

Here are 5 Tips to Organize Your Bedroom in Time for Valentine’s Day:

1. Make sure the bed is the focal point---not shoved into a corner

2. If you fold laundry on your bedroom, get it put away that same day

3. Make your bed

4. Dim the lights

5. Get rid of non-bedroom items, i.e., kid’s toys, exercise equipment and paperwork

Once you have decluttered your bedroom, try moving on to other spaces in your home. Let this be the start of your LOVE of organizing,

You know the feeling you have when you find a new place you love and that your kids love too? You can’t wait to share it with all of your friends because it is so unique? This is it. This is that place. It happened as soon as we visited Milking R Dairy at Sutton Farms in Okeechobee, FL. I couldn’t wait to tell all of my other parent friends and set up a weekend playdate.

Palm Beach Parenting was invited by Florida Milk to tour Sutton Farms and see precisely what happens on a dairy farm each day. Florida is home to approximately 55 dairy farms but did you know Okeechobee is one of Florida’s leading dairy counties? A simple drive from Palm Beach County and it can feel like you traveled a world away. The laid back town, the

friendly locals. Everyone there has a story to share about their fun times at Milking R Dairy.

When we first arrived at the farm, it was different than expected. There was a cute house structure that welcomed all visitors and an open field, filled with play structures for kids of all ages to play. There were lasso roping stations and water pump relays. Tire swings, a ball pit area and three large tube runs (think of a hamster on a wheel). My boys took off running from one play area to another and I was able to sit an relax while watching them from the adirondack chairs. If you are looking for a special location to host your next event or birthday party, this would be ideal.

22 February 2023| PB Parenting |

Adjacent to the playground is an adorable ice cream truck with their custom specialty ice cream. There are plenty of picnic table and seating to take a picnic lunch or snacks. The ice cream truck had too many different flavors to count and we tried quite a few. All were delicious of course, but the Banana Pudding ice cream is one of their most popular. Their ice cream truck and farm playground are open every Thursday 2-6, Friday 11-6, Saturday 11-4 and Sunday 1-3. Make sure to check their Facebook page for current hours - Milking R Ice Cream Fan Club.

Sutton Farms, owned by Sutton and Kris Rucks, is a fourth-generation family-owned farm and home to 1,200 milking cows. Daughter Lindsey and son Garrett also grew up and work on the farm. While on tour I could feel the connection

both owners had with the farm and the pride they took in the work they do there. Seeing the cows, how well they are treated by the workers, and knowing that at the end of the day it is a family run business makes a huge difference for me as a consumer and parent. Their Holstein and Brown Swiss cows are milked twice a day and are fed a grass-based diet balanced with the perfect amount of proteins and minerals. Seeing the work and care that goes into this farm and the products they make inspired me to seek out their brands for purchase. To make sure I can support farmers local to where I live.
