FAYETTEVILLE CITY CENTER PARK PLAYGROUND UPGRADES NEARLY COMPLETE UNEXPECTED CHALLENGES have delayed the last phase of playground upgrades at Fayetteville’s City Center Park, but Public Services officials say the popular “tot lot” section should reopen soon, complete with its new sunshade structures. When Fayetteville’s new City Hall & City Center Park opened in early-summer 2021, the community immediately flocked to the awesome playground, which features equipment for children of all ages. And although the popular spray pad keeps kids cool in the summer months, many residents and guests complained that other parts of the playground, especially the slides, were uncomfortably hot in direct sunlight.

Public Services staff went back to the drawing board, and in the summer of 2022, large sunshades were permanently installed in key areas. A temporary sunshade was installed over the slide on the preschool playground, otherwise known as the “tot lot.”

We’re addressing these challenges now, well before the next summer season. This year, contractors were hired to install permanent sunshades over the tot lot, and that work began earlier this month. However, they faced infrastructure challenges due to the tot lot’s proximity to underground water and

stormwater utilities, and that has led to construction delays. “We had hoped to reopen the tot lot before Thanksgiving break, but now we’re aiming to reopen before the December 2 Miracle on Main Street event,” said Public Services Director Chris Hindman. “I’m glad we’re addressing these challenges now, well before the next summer season.” The City has completed other park improvements in 2023 as well, including the installation of artificial turf on the east side of the great lawn and a permanent rubber mulch treatment around the playground.

CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE HONORED WITH ARC’S REGIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR VISIONARY PLANNING

THE ATLANTA REGIONAL COMMISSION (ARC) has honored the City of Fayetteville and planning consultants HKS with its 2023 Regional Excellence Award for Visionary Planning based on the success of the City’s “Moving Fayetteville Forward” downtown redevelopment plan. Mayor Ed Johnson and other City representatives received the award on October 27 at ARC’s annual State of the Region breakfast meeting in Atlanta. “This long-range plan envisions a vibrant downtown that is more pedestrian friendly, safer for bicycling, with new parks and green spaces, and architecture that honors the City’s rich history while also

“This long-range plan envisions a vibrant downtown...” looking to the future,” stated an ARC press release. “This vision grew out of an ARC Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) planning process that featured online surveys, virtual community meetings, and a digital ‘scavenger hunt,’ where residents submitted photos of what they liked best about their city. The plan will serve as a guide for developers looking to invest in the community, ensuring that Fayetteville remains a great place to live.

3 - November 2023

The City in 2020 launched a robust study funded through ARC’s LCI program to prepare a detailed analysis and action plan for the revitalization of Downtown Fayetteville. The City employed HKS and their consultant team to prepare for this plan. The multi-disciplinary team also included PEC+ (planning and landscape architecture), Office of Design (character analysis), NV5 (zoning), Novell (economic development and market study), and Blue Cypress Consulting (community engagement).
