Adam Smrekovský

Adam Smrekovský (* 1996) pracuje výhradně s médiem pohyblivého obrazu a filmovou narací. Navazuje na zcizující postupy experimentálního filmu a také na výtvarné postupy videoartu, který zkoumá a dekonstruuje aspekty narace vytvářející z díla celistvý fikční svět. Jeho filmy na první pohled působíabsurdním humorem a minimalistickým dějem. Reaguje tak na všudypřítomné a přetrvávající krize „velkých“ vyprávění. Postavami jeho filmů jsou často zvláštní outsideři, bizarní postavy, které však i přes neobvyklý zjev a řeči dávají větší smysl než skutečnost, vůči níž se vymezují. Kočičák, vyhořelý korporátní manažer chytající ztracené psy nebo prekarizovaný zaměstnanec z fabriky, který ve volném čase jezdí donekonečna autobusy, mohou sloužit jako příklady. I přes celkové absurdní pojetí lidského údělu nalezneme v jeho dílech citlivě reflektovanou sociální realitu a témata konspiračních teorií, zhoubného vlivu neoliberálních strategií internalizovaného self-managementu i prekarizované práce. Celkově Smrekovský svými filmy popisuje jakousi existenciálně laděnou odsouzenost k fungování uvnitř systému. Formálně autor tíhne k DIY estetice, angažuje neherce nebo amatérské herce, kamera, střih a mizanscéna technicky leckdy působí spontánním a nahodilým stylem. Čerpá z estetiky sociálních sítí nebo DIY YouTube koláží. Žánrově se jeho díla pohybují někde mezi fikčním dokumentem a filmovou esejí, přibližuje se také mock-dokumentárnímu žánru – herec mluví s kameramanem, hrané záběry jsou v juxtapozici s found footage materiálem a jedna postava prochází několika filmy. Z jejich sledování si divák odnáší pocit dezorientace z mísení náznaků fikce a skutečnosti. I přesto opisují jeho filmy svou narací autentickou atmosféru, která se v jistých okamžicích přibližuje až specifické filmové mystičnosti (nebo její ironizaci). To vše diváka nutí dívat se dál a opakovaně. V rámci výstavy prezentuje svou diplomovou práci s názvem X-Y-Z (2023). Adam Smrekovský nejprve studoval v Ateliéru intermédií na FaVU VUT v Brně. Je absolventem Ateliéru video u Martina Mazance a Jana Šrámka na téže univerzitě. Zúčastnil se stáže na Cooper Union v New Yorku. Jeho filmy byly promítány například na festivalu PAF Olomouc v rámci soutěže Jiné vize CZ (2021) nebo Letní filmové škole v Uherském hradišti (2021). Vystavoval na skupinových výstavách v Praze a Brně (Galerie FaVU, Berlínskej model nebo Galerie Jelení) nebo v Uničově na Festivalu současného umění (2022).

Adam Smrekovský (* 1996) works exclusively with the medium of moving image and film narration. He follows the alienating practices of experimental film and the visual practices of video art, which explores and deconstructs aspects of narrative, creating a holistic fictional world. At first glance his films have absurd humour and a minimalist plot. In doing so, he responds to the pervasive and persistent crisis of “grand” narratives. The protagonists in his films are often strange outsiders, bizarre characters who, despite their unusual appearances and speech, make more sense than the reality they define themselves against. The cat person, the burnt-out corporate executive who catches lost dogs, or the precarious factory worker who endlessly rides buses in his leisure time can serve as examples. Despite the overall absurd conception of human destiny, his works reflect sensitively on social reality and the themes of conspiracy theories, and on the destructive influence of neoliberal strategies of internalized self-management and precarious work. Overall, Smrekovský’s films describe a kind of existential destiny to function within the system. Formally, the author tends towards DIY aesthetics, engaging non-actors or amateur actors, while the camera, the editing and mise-en-scene often appear to be spontaneous and haphazard. Smrekovský draws on the aesthetics of social media and DIY YouTube collages. In terms of genre, his works are somewhere between fictional documentary and film essay, and they also come close to the mock-documentary genre—the actor talks to the cameraman, the staged footage is juxtaposed with found-footage material, and one character appears in several films. What the viewer gains from watching them is a sense of disorientation from the mix of fiction and reality. Despite that, his films describe an authentic atmosphere through their narration, which at certain moments approaches a specific cinematic mystique (or its ironizing). All of this makes the viewer want to keep on watching. As part of the diploma exhibition, he presents his final work entitled X-Y-Z (2023).

Adam Smrekovský first studied Intermedia Studio at the FFA BUT, then at the same university under the guidance of Martin Mazanec and Jan Šrámek he studied Video Studio, of which he is a graduate. He completed an internship at the Cooper Union in New York. His films were screened at the PAF Olomouc festival (Other Visions CZ 2022), and at the Summer Film School in Uherské Hradiště (2021). He has exhibited in group exhibitions in Prague and Brno (FFA Gallery, Berlinskej model Gallery, Jelení Gallery) and at the Festival of Contemporary Art in Uničov (2022).
