Alternative Fashion

Punk, gothic, rock, emo, tattoo, piercing and alternative hairstyles are like the fashion and trend these days.

It looks kind of weird and exaggerated, people who are not into it find it rather odd and crazy, but the world is getting weirder in a way, we live in a modern creative time and generation and everybody wants to be different, to be artistic and unique and they want to be noticed for their own style.

05

Alternative artists and designer students hold an Alternative Fashion Week annually, it is something these young designers are so excited about. It gives them the freedom to express their imaginations in a very elaborate and exaggerated way, bring to life some fantasies and just be crazy about it. It may seem rather wild, but it is a lot of fun to play around colors and textiles and various materials and piece them altogether.

06

Most alternative fashion week shows are open to all young designers to join, as well as open for public viewing. It hopes to promote love for art as well as it give introvert people an outlet to express their thought and feelings and express themselves although in a different way.

It始s amazing to see how much talent there is, how creative and artistic most of young designers these days, they deserve credits for their passion and love for arts and Fashion should give alternative a chance and have its own place. We live in a free world, we should be able to wear whatever we like and feel comfortable on, no matter how odd it may look to others.

Maryland Institute College of Art Annual Benefit Fashion Show The Maryland Institute College of Arts hosted its Annual Benefit Fashion where senior student designers spent almost a year perfecting their designs and collections which will be showcased in this must anticipated fashion show packed with hundreds of professionals and experts in the fashion industry.

By Jordan Matthews; Photo by Derek Blanks ʻ00 The theme of the show was called “transcend,” it is a fresh and brilliant and cool idea ‒ the show explored manifestations of the unconscious minds.

12

The designers found really challenging because they have to go beyond what is expected of the whole concept and must reveal something hidden about themselves through their designs.

By Luis Rivas It was surprisingly good to see how creative and imaginative their ideas were and see how each designers approach. People wear clothes that they feel and fashion is an art that caters for the need of people to express their inner self and what we wear often expresses how we feel and think, it either reveals something or conceals something.

13

Either way it tells something about us, truth or what we want people to perceive of us. People identify with clothes or garments and it mirrors oneself and the internal impulses.

By Lizzy Farley; Photo by Derek Blanks Ęť00 This is what the theme of the show was about. Transcend represents a place that is metaphysical, emotional and spiritual. The concept of the show was not the typical kind of show that most have. It rather deep but it is also strikingly good. Apart from the fact that the show is for a good cause and it aims to aid

14

charities programs, the good thing about the show is that, after wards the audience gets an up-close conversation with the designers. They continue to mix and mingle down to the exhibition of fashion-inspired photography, illustration and fiber arts. It was a great show, all the hard works of the student designers is worth it with the huge success of the whole show.

San Diego’s Annual “IT” Student Fashion Show San Diegoʼs Annual “IT” Fashion Show was on its 4th year and already the people who came to watch the show are anticipating the 5th IT Fashion Show. For fashion experts, it definitely is the one runway show you should not miss.

15

Every year, San Diego始s finest and most talented student designers come together for a spectacular show and fashion competition. The whole show takes almost a year of preparation and more six months for student fashion designers to create their own original designs and collections.

16

Winners of the competition will earn prizes and awards and the most coveted MARCOMM Scholarship and Internship. Student designers then will get the opportunity to work with professionals, make a huge step towards making it big and start their own career and make a name of their own.

17

On the other hand, being part of the show is already as good as winning the scholarship for these young designers; the chance alone of being recognized by many of the industryʼs top and influential names and be discovered is a huge honor. Only selected designers get the opportunity to showcase their work on the show, perhaps the reason why the show is called “IT” Fashion Show, because only those who have got IT can get the spot.

2013 South African Fashion Week Autumn/Winter Collection The South African Fashion Week 2013 Autumn/Winter Collections was a 3 day show featuring promising and upcoming designers and local talents as they compete and showcase their interestingly creative and unique designs, so captivating and each piece left the audience is awe, ceaselessly cheering and wanting for more.

Clive Rundle

20

Clive Rundle The show started on September 27, 2013 at the Rosebank Crowne Plaza. The first day showcased spectacular designs from Clive Rundle, Fundudzi by Craig Jacobs, Black Coffee and Two among many other equally talented and creative designers.

Clive Rundle showcased designs that have interesting cuts and choice of colors. He puts together pieces of clothing in layers ‒ wearing blazers over a blazer or jacket that is over another piece of clothing like polo short or a tight low cut layered blouse combining different colors and textiles of different textures.

21

Interesting also are the leg tattoos the models wore, probably henna or mendhi designs from their thighs down to their toes.

Fundudzi Fundudzi showcase its collection at The Zone, Rosebank, Gauteng SA. Most the pieces were made of thick, somewhat knitted and sweatshirt type of fabric but is tight and perfectly outlines the contours of the body. Perfect winter outfit as it mostly thick but designed to bring out sexiness of both the male and female models.

22

The female models also wore some kind of an interesting bonnet; printed ones that often have colors that are not exactly in contrast but not matching with the colors of the garment worn. They look a bit strange, but in a way interesting, it gives the wintry feel for the collection.

Fundudzi

23

Black Coffee What is interesting about the designs showcased by Black Coffee is the tiny and loosely knitted headdress that the models had on. The design had various layering and the pieces of garment worn one over the other may seem bulky and it hides the contours or silhouette of a woman始s body yet looks very feminine and sexy. The hidden pockets for each piece makes it perfectly fit for the winter season.

24

Black Coffee

25

Two The collections showcased from another interesting designer called, TWO were trendy yet classic. The creation is sophisticated, unique and somewhat playful because at some point you may think that some pieces do not mesh so well and even seem odd, but looking at the oddness is what makes it even more interesting. They used soft quality and comfortable fabrics, fit and body-hugging and thus shows the wearers fit physique and they look and feel minimal and simple. TWO created designs that were comfortable and people can actually wear.

26

Two Part of SAFW day 1 is the Renault New Talent Search, where each finalist for the search from 2012 previewed the judges Renault Megane Coupe and was asked to write down one word about the emotion it evoked in them while watching and then that would be used as the theme or inspiration for each of the designers始 collection. Each designer then after months of preparation presented their collection at the end of the show, they all created captivating designs and magnificent collection that made judging tougher that they already thought it would, amazing overflow of talents.

27

Scorzch by Zano Sithetho was the winner, along with prizes that will help him further his career path in the world of fashion and design. All the finalists were a standout but he stood out the most and thus the win a well-deserved one. Day 2 was on September 28, 2013 was still at Crowne Plaza in Rosebank. Following the success of day 1 was another spectacular display of talents and creativeness. The night showcased some old and new faces in the fashion world. Amongst the many are Amanda Laird Cherry, Kottin & Twille, Kathrin Kidger, Bianca Warren, Hanrie Lues, Rubicon, PALSE Homme and Gert Johan Coetzee.

28

Amanda Laird Cherry

29

Kottin & Twille Amanda Laird Cherry and Kottin & Twille were the first designers whose collections walked the runway with their mesmerizing and elegant garments. Amanda始s was plain with classic hues and Kottin & Twille始s used interesting prints and flowingly soft fabrics. Different but both were very captivating.

30

Kathrin Kidger

31

Bianca Warren Promising new talents and newly established Durbin Designers; Kathrin Kidger, Bianca

Warren and Hanrie Lues also showcased amazingly unique collections, with what they showcased on the show gave proof that they are designers to watch out for.

32

Hanrie Lues After the models walked the ramp wearing designs and collections from 3 of the best newly established Durbin designers, it was followed by yet another amazingly collections from an equally talented designers that accordingly need no introduction at all. Just the look at each garment they have created speaks a thousand words about them.

33

Rubicon These designers were Rubicon, PALSE Homme and Gert Johan Coetzee. They each created individual and unique pieces that are so distinct says so much about the designer. They were all elegant pieces; Rubicon went for checkered fabrics and minimal yet elegant designs.

34

PALSE Homme

35

Gert Johan Coetzee PALSE Homme on the other hand are not the typical design you would normally see, they were rather strange and odd in some way using blood red for a wedding gown making it look somewhat 驶gothic始 but the strangeness is what makes the designs unique and interesting. As for Gert Johan Coetzee, the designs were classy and elegant. Using vivid and striking single colors and the accessories woven in each piece are intricately designed and one can tell that they are carefully thought of and most probably handmade.

36

Then the night ended with astonishing designs from Mzantsi and Karen Monk Klijnstra.

Mzantsi They showcased collections in collaboration with WOW Bag. Mzantsi featured male designs that were hip yet elegant, pairing trendy and hips pants and knickers with elegant blazers or coats, so perfect for autumn and winter. Each ensemble were comfortable looking and perhaps comfortable to wear as well. It is one of those designs that you would love to wear yourself

37

without any reservation of doubting if it would fit you or make you look trying so hard to be like a ramp model. On the other hand Karen Monk Klijnstra created elegant dresses using metallic colored but soft quality fabrics with some interesting cuts, fits the body so well, aiming at bring the contour of the body and making the wearer look so sexy, but not too revealing and simple yet classy.

Karen Monk Klijnstra

38
