Still Single? HAVE FUN! by

Virtuous Arevalos When you get into your 20's, it can be an interesting and fun time of life. Here you are in your world with your friends, busy trying to figure out life and how to #adult, and then before you know it, one by one, people you know are tying the knot. I’m over here like I don’t even have a rope to tie a knot with.

is the time to take advantage of the extra time you may have. People are attracted to passionate people, so if you don’t have a hobby, go and discover one! The possibilities are endless and consider it an adventure to discover what your passions are.

People are deciding who to spend the rest of their life with and I can’t even decide what I want for lunch. Wedding after wedding, dress after dress, vow after vow, you start to wonder, if you should be taking that step anytime soon. Truth be told, marriage is a big step that comes at a different time for everyone. If you, like me, feel like everyone around is getting married, or if the stress of marriage or lack thereof, is nagging at your every moment, here’s how to cope:

MODEL THIS!

What comes to your mind when I say the word “model?” If you think anything like me, what comes to mind is a tall, thin, and practically flawless-looking human being; one who is the picture-perfect example of all the latest trends. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a girl who loves keeping up with the latest trends and fashion shows, but I’ve found that true modeling doesn’t involve being a copy-cat of someone else. Rather, it is a way to express who you already are by wearing (and being) what fits you best!

How cool is it that something as simple as the clothes you wear has the potential to scream who you are louder than you can? Think about it this way— your personality and preferences are all intertwined in the clothes you wear. So who better to model you, than you!? Personally, when it comes to my wardrobe selection, I always stick by the quote: “Classy, never trashy, and a little bit sassy.” I love wearing anything cute, feminine, and trendy—all with a bit of a profes-

sional touch. But most of all, I love taking the latesttrends and making them my own. Why settle with what everybody else is wearing when you can take what’s popular, change it up, and tailor it just for you?

I also like to think that what it means to be a model involves staying true to who you are, and constantly asking yourself, “Does this outfit make me feel like I’m on top of the world?” If so, go for it! I’ve found that when I wear what makes me feel my absolute best, there is something on the inside of me that makes me feel like I can take on the world.

The truth is, YOU can model what is already on the inside of you—your smile, accessories, clothes, and shoes are all part of your unique original style that only you can create. So what are you waiting for?!? Fashioned has been looking forward to this issue for so many reasons––with the summer came warmth, heat, the sun, themes of weddings, celebrations, vacations, red-white-&-blue and freedom ... all things we love! So it seemed only fitting that most of this issue took place somewhere our magazine calls home ... the beaches of the West Coast. Morning, noon or night, Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall, many Cali natives will take the beach, with all of its wind, sand and waves--any which way we can! Our beach fashion and moments captured throughout this issue are no different (thanks to our stylist, Virtuous Arevalos, for her killer thrift-shop finds). Thankful for the freedoms we still have in this beautiful country called America, our photos are dedicated to life, love, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It's the stuff our magazine is made of. Thankful for women and what we represent, this issue also embodies strength, passion and hope. We are not perfect, but we are strong and we love hard. Lastly, grateful for the lives who have made sacrifices so great––the depth of which we may never know––this issue celebrates loved ones, freedom and the USA! You're the One that I Want!

Since the beginning of this magazine, Brittany Treglia (now Johnstone), has been a part of the Fashioned family, kicking off our magazine as our very first cover girl (September '15 Issue), eventually becoming our Director of Photography, sharing her beauty, gifts and talents with the Fashioned world. It made perfect sense to have her back on our cover, as she glowed beautifully as she married her best friend and man of her dreams, Coltn Johnstone. Here is this month's It Girl, as told to interviewer, Micaele Ricaforte.

FM: So every love story has a beginning... what's yours? How did the two of you meet?

BJ: I was up working at Camp Cedar Crest, helping run youth camps. I was in the snack shack getting some food (I’m pretty confident it was a cheeseburger ha!) when they called my name through the window cause my order was ready. I walked over and this guy with the most beautiful blue eyes handed me my food. I turned around and said “WOW! His eyes are gorgeous!” and he turned around to a friend and said “WOW! She’s gorgeous.”

I went to the snack shack every day the rest of camp. He won me over with his eyes and food, that’s a good man right there.

We dated on and off for about two years.

It was quite a roller coaster, but then one day he just contacted me and said, “Let’s do this, for real.” He sent me two dozen roses the next day and then came to dinner with my family. Our story had a lot of turns and twists, but it was so perfect because it was one of those “timing” things.

We were waiting for each other and when we had tried those other times, we were missing the timing. We were learning to dance with one another you could say, then one day, we just got it. He’s a great dancer.

FM: The mountains sound like a perfect place to fall in love. Tell us a little bit about what it means to the two of you and why you chose to have your wedding up in the mountains?

BJ: Well, Colton grew up in Arrow Bear, CA, so he is a mountain boy through-andthrough. But the mountains is also where we met … where we fell in love. I’ve been involved with camps for about four years now, so every time I would be at camp he and I would reconnect; Because of that, camp is just such a special place for us. We have a great relationship with the camp managers and so when we were looking at wedding facilities, they were more than happy to allow us to use the camp. Colton’s sister was actually married there, as well, so (Camp) Cedar Crest is like our second home.

FM: Some girls dream of their wedding from the time they were little. Did you already have an idea in mind when you were planning your wedding?

BJ: I have always dreamed of a huge, elaborate wedding…always. As I got older though, that kind of went out the window.

We had a big wedding, but it was very simple. Not until we started actually dating, did I have an idea of a “theme”. I knew I ALWAYS wanted to have a s’mores bar. I wanted my brother to play his guitar as I walked down the aisle, and I always knew black would be one of my main colors.

FM: How did you find that perfect dress to say “yes" to?

BJ: (Laughing) I went to David’s Bridal three weeks after I got engaged because they were having a sale. I had this whole style picked out in my head—a mermaid dress with some sparkling stuff, maybe a high-neck with lace—something super girlie. When we got there I absolutely HATED how the dresses looked on me.

HATED IT. God bless the lady helping me because she was a rock star. She ended up finding a dress for me from the discount rack. She brought it over and I took one look and thought, “Eew, no.” When she told me the price and I said, “Oh! Sure, I’ll try it!” (It was a GREAT deal!!) I put it on, took one look, and instantly fell in love.

It was perfect, simple, had a subtle lace design on the top, and my favorite part … POCKETS! My dad laughed because I found the dress within half an hour. He (Continued on page 32)

7 Conversation Starters that Will Ruin a First Date!

There are two types of people in this world when on a date––one that is calm, collected and can handle themselves well during a first date; and the other, who spews every detail of their life, leaving the other person sitting across from them, drawing a blank. For the second, your first date has now turned into a telenovela, and soon after, you leave the date crying because you know it could have gone better.

between us girls, and even then … ladies. Whoever started the trend about talking about sex with someone you are trying to get to know, had it all wrong. Ever heard of the saying, “Less is more”? If you’re on a first date looking for a serious relationship, talking about getting physical or anywhere near there, is a no-go (and you don’t want to give the wrong impression). Every girl is called to be a lady––every girl. You are worth so much more than cheap talk. If you’ve ever gone down that path before, pick yourself up, reminding yourself of who you really are. Don’t degrade yourself–– no man is worth that (it doesn’t matter who he is, what he owns or what he does). It’s time to hold yourself to a higher standard. Go ahead, you’re worth it.

I think we can all agree that conversation is the key aspect when on a date––especially when it’s a first. Conversation on a first date can prove to be difficult to come up with when you’re already fighting the nerves of just being there. We totally get it. A helpful hint? Remember that though you may be fighting even the strongest of nerves, there are seven topics to steer clear from when MONEY TALK conversing … and you’ll be set! Let’s start from 3) It’s rude to ask a person how much they make the bottom and make our way up, shall we? a year, for a reason. Let’s leave the money talk for the server who brings the bill at the end of the POOR ME date. Talking about finances is uncomfortable.

So many things to love about summer—June weddings, Fourth of July and that good old August as we ready for Fall. Of those, Fourth of July still stands out as personal favorite for so many reasons—good food, family and friends and celebrating Freedom: Freedom of speech, Freedom to love and Freedom to live. Living in a free country is a blessing of its own, but if your life doesn’t truly feel free then I’m hoping this past Independence Day you celebrated and experienced freedom in areas we can tend sometimes tend to overlook.

Here are some ways to help you find that feeling of freedom so that this year you can reach new levels of living as you walk in your newfound freedom!

Clutter Free This is definitely something I have struggled with for a while. I am always on-the-go and rarely have any down time. When I do, I am generally too tired to clean. Sound familiar? If so, looks like you and I are in the same boat. But I’m going to give you some steps to help you rock that boat and step into a clutter-free life!

1. Clean as you go … Clean on the go! One of my mom’s many sayings is, “When you cook you clean.” Now I know some of you may be thinking, well that’s great, but I don’t cook. I feel that this saying can be used universally such as, when you brush your teeth, clean. And so it is with other areas. When you’re finished doing or using something, clean. Sometimes when our lives are so busy we tend to forget those little moments of down time we have every day, but a little cleaning, goes a long way.

2. The five-minute clean up.

Okay confession-time … I love Oprah! I hope I didn’t lose anybody with that confession and if I did, well then deuces to you, too. Kidding, not kidding, but for real, I love Oprah. I’m stating this because of the millions of things I have learned from her; this lesson is definitely one of the top ten. All you have to do is set aside five minutes—just five, and just clean. Now this is not a deep clean, this is just picking up clothes, washing the dishes or vacuuming. Some sort of cleaning for five minutes straight. You’ll be surprised how much you can get done.

3. Get rid of excess. Now prepare yourselves, because this is the hardest step, removing items you have no use for anymore. If you’re like me and your daily trips to your closet or your drawers consist with you saying, “Wow, I forgot I even had this,” it’s time to … let it go (no “Frozen” pun intended).

Something I always say to myself when it’s time to declutter, just don’t look at it.

When we start to ponder on newly-rediscovered buried treasures, it becomes harder to let go. Just remember you went this long without it, you’ll be fine.

1. Breathe. I know it seems too easy, but believe it or not this is one of the best things you can do when under stress. In fact, Harvard researcher Herbert Benson coined the term, "The Relaxation Response" in 1975 and wrote a book on the entire subject under the same name. In it, Benson used scientific research to show that short periods of meditation, using breathing as a focus, could alter the body's stress response. According to the American Institute of Stress (AIS), to answer their most common question, the quickest way to relieve stress is to …. take a breath! Just taking a few minutes, wherever you are, to take a few deep breaths will help your brain to take a healthy dose of chill so that you can figure out your life, in a more, calm and stress-free manor.

4. Be positive, you can do it.

Some of us have been in clutter so long, that a clutter-free life seems like only a dream. But just remember you can do it! Don’t try to accomplish everything at once.

Just take things one step at a time, and then when you have mastered that step add another.

With so many things going on in our lives— school, work, bills, relationships, more … things can get pretty stressful. Here are some tips to help you “Free your mind” (thank you, EnVouge).

2. Write Things Down. This step has helped me through so many hurdles in my life. Writing things down,

whether it’s how you are feeling at the moment or a list of things that need to get done, writing will help clarify your mind. Also for some, writing is very soothing. When writing down your emotions, it is amazing to look back on them when you are better, because it always does get better. It’s good to see how far you’ve grown and that you did overcome. Writing down lists helps you to determine what task should be done first and/or if you truly are as swamped as you feel you are.

3. Talk to Someone. Let’s face it, whether you are an introvert, extrovert or ambivert, we were all born to talk—some of us more than other. Also, we all have those people or that person in our lives that are not only the best listeners but will be brutally honest with you because we all need, unfortunately, brutal honesty from time to time. For me it’s my mom. Anytime I’m in a pickle I call my mom and she gives me her insight, her very honest insight, whether it be what went wrong, what to do next or to just comfort me. Telling someone, you trust, about a situation that is very stressful is important for two reasons: 1. It’ll give you a perspective of the situation from a different angle; and 2. (Freedom, Continued from page 31) 4. Music. Music is a huge stress reliever for me. Anytime I’m feeling stressed, I put on some sort of background music. I love a broad spectrum of music so it can be anything from 80s classics to musicals to guitar instrumental music. Try it out! Next time you are swamped with homework or paying bills or sad because your significant other is cray cray, put on some music, turn it up, pump up the jam and sing or dance that stress away!

I love it so much.*** FM: What kind of look did you choose for your wedding?

BJ: Super simple. I wore my hair down with curls and a braid across the back for a little flair. I did wear extensions and my make-up was neutral shades, browns and natural. Again, with a mountain wedding I thought I would look ridiculous with bright red lipstick and glitter on my dress, plus natural is more my style. *** FM: Possibly even more important than makeup: skincare. What skincare routine did you use to get glowing wedding-ready skin?

BJ: I honestly didn't do a thing different than normal.

Just your normal face wash. Ha! I’m so lazy, to be honest. I had thought about doing a face mask the night before the wedding but I was too tired.

FM: Let's talk advice for brides-to-be. What did your preparations look like the day before the wedding?

BJ: We had to “travel” to our wedding venue, so we setup the day before. Also, the weather changed on us.

We were supposed to have an outdoor wedding and the weather forecast said it was going to snow … IN MAY! So the day before was a little hectic, though not bad. Nobody was fighting or anything crazy, just a lot of scrambling and reorganizing. Some of the best advice I received that I will also share, is to take a minute and soak it all in. One of our groomsmen grabbed us as we were setting up the day before and said, “Hey, just stop and take it in.” That was good, because I think we get so caught up in the task that we forget why we were doing it. The day of the wedding was great. We had the best bridal party and our families are amazing. My bridesmaids and I had breakfast together and all got ready, Colton and his groomsmen went out to breakfast and also got ready together. We just wanted

to enjoy our day. My mom made me a scrapbook with letters and pictures from my bridesmaids and family.

So I cried a lot. It’s true what they say though, it goes by so fast. So my advice is just take it all in. Try not to get caught up in the “To-do” list.

FM: What's the best way to deal with wedding stress?

BJ: Eat (laughing). KIDDING! I think I had to just keep going back to “What am I doing this for,” then I’d realize it’s for Colton and I. I truly got to the place where I could have cared less if the table cloths were the wrong color or if the food was burnt. I just wanted to marry Colton.

FM: What advice would you give to young ladies who are searching for their love story?

BJ: Stay the course. Don’t settle. Don’t make it happen.

Trust the process, he (or she for you guys) is out there.

Listen to your heart, don’t confuse your heart either.

Deep down we all know if it’s the right person or not.

Trust me, you’ll know when it’s right. in the meantime, while you wait. Enjoy your life. Love your family, love your friends. He’s (or she’s) coming. I promise. n

Summer Beauty Essentials!

The heat has reached her Summer peak, and that means summer is slowly wrapping up! While it is sometimes sad to bid Summer adieu, there’s no reason to turn in the Summer fun festivities. There are weddings, carnivals, and just your classic beach days to still attend to. What’s more? We’ve got a list of beauty must-haves to help keep your Summer glow. There’s no time like the present, so now is your chance to give some of those summer beauty trends a try … besides, it’s still very hot out.

Those gorgeous locks. The must have looks for your hair are “Beachy Waves” and braids, so let’s get down to the details on getting these fab styles.

For the “Beachy Waves,” simply use a sea salt spray on damp hair to add texture and use a curling wand to create those super loose curls. To dress up the “Beachy Waves” for a wedding or summer date, try adding a trendy waterfall braid. If you just want your hair up with this hot weather, then ditch the messy bun and go for the trendy fishtail braid and boxer braids. A fishtail braid can be worn to the side or toward the back like a classic braid. It’s simple to make, too. Just take two large sections of hair and weave small sections between the large sections.

Boxer braids are edgy and simply to do because they are just Dutch braids. With these gorgeous styles, you will be a total beach babe!

That summer glam. Obviously, makeup that is both heat-friendly and waterproof are going to be your best friend. Ditch the heavy foundation and opt for the trendy tinted moisturizers, CC creams, and BB creams. They are lightweight and won’t melt on 34

you in this crazy heat (some even come with SPF in them for extra protection). Once you have your base on, up the glam factor by using bronzers and golden highlights to emphasize that gorgeous summer tan. They are the current summer trend and look beautiful with that golden skin you have. Speaking of tans, using self-tanners are very trendy right now and safer for your skin, too! If you plan on going out this year’s last of the summer nights, you want warm Smokey eyes to be your go-to look. They are the current trend released in several eyeshadow palettes, and this look is flattering on many skin tones. To top your look off, wear a bold lip. Many celebrities and fashion-forward women have been wearing bright orange, hot pink, and of course your “classic red” lips this summer. Whether you try one of these makeup trends or use them all in one look, you will look like a summer goddess!

Don’t forget those nails. Baby pinks, reds, peach tones, and neon’s have been the top trending nail colors this summer. To make these trends better, minimal nail art is in, too, so don’t sweat it on those detailed nail designs. Whether you like your nails short or love the long stiletto nails, these colors and minimal nail art will be gorgeous.

There you have it––the end-of-summer trends for 2017. They are fun, practical, and easy to achieve.

No matter what the rest of your summer holds, remember to walk with confidence and strut your stuff because not only are you gorgeous, but you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalms 139:14).
