Dear Santa Readers,

Small Talk magazine started out as a Holiday Gift Guide and a chance for us to share the personal stories of the beautiful brands that we carry. As it has grown and officially become Small Talk, our seasonal e-magazine, we ' ve been able to celebrate local events throughout the year, dive into trends we are seeing (and loving!), and go deeper Now, in our third season,

Letter From the Owner November, 2024

Small Talk is truly a labour of love and we hope you enjoy our seasonal editions; a holiday decor focus now, and the return of our gift guide in late November.

Far + Wide was built on a love for local, the intention behind a great gift, and a celebration of the everyday With ups and downs over the past few years, ensuring Far + Wide can help you gift thoughtfully and intentionally is so important to us and I'm proud of our product mix, throughout the year and now, as we enter the Holiday season Each year we work to maintain a balance on our shelves of customer and staff favourites (that you can share with loved ones!) as well as new brands and exciting products that we hope you'll love as much as we do.

As we enter November and slowly shift from fall and Halloween decor into holiday mode, we hope this intention comes through in the decor and home goods you find in-store - from collections built around fresh colourways and themes, ("Modern Baroque" is a personal favourite!) to a new and fun array of our popular foodie ornaments, to beautiful, functional, and intentional pieces that can grow and change with your family, becoming cherished heirlooms to pass on.

In addition to the inspiration you'll find on these pages, our full collections are now up online and may just provide a spark of seasonal ingenuity and excitement! Meanwhile, in store, we ' re preparing to create a winter wonderland as we take on holiday set-up over the next couple of days (we'll reopen on November 1st). And of course we can't forget about seasonal events!

I can't wait to show you what we have planned for Holiday 2024 As always, thank you for your trust and support, for being part of our incredible community, for loving and supporting local as much as we do, and for celebrating the season!

Wishing you a beautiful - and intentional - holiday season

PREMADE, DIYS, AND GIFT IDEAS

A LITTLE HISTORY

Where do advent calendars originate from?

Like many other aspects of modern Christmas practices, the Advent calendar is of German origin. From the early nineteenth century, at the latest, German Protestants began to mark the days of Advent either by burning a candle for the day or, more simply, marking walls or doors with a line of chalk each day.

in the early twentieth century, the first printed calendars appeared, followed by Gerhard Lang’s innovation of adding small doors in the 1920s. Therefore, he is often seen as the creator of the modern calendar.

Calendars filled with chocolate began to appear from the late 1950s around the time that they also began to spread around the world

DIY ADVENT CALENDARS

Classic Treats

You can never go wrong with the classics! A chocolate a day is always a good idea when it comes to an advent calendar. You can swap out the chocolate for candy or take it to the next level with baked goods.

Books

One of our personal favourites is an advent calendar of books! They can be thrifted finds, new reads, or a mix Wrap each one for a mystery book each day!

Christmas Spirits

A grownup advent calendar doesn’t get much more fun than this! Fill it with beer, wine, cider, mixed drinks, non-alcoholic, or your beverage of choice!

Scavenger Hunt

Up the anty and hide clues in the advent calendar that lead to little prizes or a long hunt that leads to a bigger gift on Christmas Eve.

Holiday Activities

Come up with little daily activities to make the most of the season. You can pick from a whole variety including watching a holiday movie, baking cookies, driving around looking at Christmas lights, going out for a seasonal drink, and so much more.

Handmade Goodies

There’s something so special about handmade gifts and the time and energy that goes into creating them. Try your hand at making bracelets, art prints, poems, bookmarks, special notes, or letters.

Craftmas

Utilize a great company like Craftmas, a Canadian company that makes advent calendar boxes. Fill them with whatever your heart desires - they even give examples on their website!

Little Gifts

It doesn’t have to break the bank to be unique! There are lots of little gifts that you can fill in an advent calendar like lip balm, stickers, bath bombs, jewelry, face masks, and much more.
