Letter From the Owner September, 2024 Dear Readers, I doubled down on my reading in August. More accurately, I devoured more books in the month than I normally get to in a year, smashing my Goodreads goal and creating a bit of a supply issue as my to-be-read pile disappeared almost completely. Over the past few months, I had found myself in a slump and, in addition to medical and professional help, taking time for myself has helped scrape my mental health off the floor.

I shouldn’t have been so surprised that disconnecting from technology and spending an hour or so before bed getting lost in a story, instead of stressing about life, would greatly improve my mood. I knew that I was doing a horrible job taking care of myself but as spring flew by, and then summer, there were always a hundred and one things to do and taking care of myself didn’t make the top seventy-five. Bogged down with work and family obligations, a good dose of financial strain (thanks grocery store CEOs), and the state of the world as a whole right now, self-care can feel selfish.

I’m not here to tell anyone that taking a bath will solve their problems, or that reading an hour a day guarantees happiness, but that doesn’t make it unimportant. Amid a never-ending to-do list and reminders pinging from our phones throughout the day, it’s easy to lose sight of what we’re really doing here, living our lives.

Forgive my flair for the dramatic, I honestly can’t help myself. Each time I pen something for our Small Talk magazine I feel like a broken record, but perhaps if I talk about slowing down and embracing the season enough my brain will catch on. Because I really, truly am excited for fall – the layered outfits, vibrant yellow, orange, and red leaves collecting along the sidewalk, those first few mornings when you can sense a change in the air, and sipping a hot chai, curled up with a good book.

Luckily, that dwindling to-be-read pile is about to receive a healthy injection of new titles as our Far + Wide Book Swap returns next week. This free event is open to anyone with the desire to swap their gently used, current (within the last 10 years) novels for new titles while being cost-effective and environmentally conscious. This year, we’re excited to extend the event beyond one evening to allow for wider participation – for more details visit our social media channels or contact the shop.

My wish this season, for all of us, is stillness. Whether it’s enjoying the sun streaming through the windows as you get ready for the day, indulging in each bite during a great meal, the coziness of your blankets as you settle into bed, or even a delicious bubble bath at the end of a long day. Don’t forget, you matter too.

FALL IN KAMLOOPS WHAT TO DO ON A DRIZZLING DAY DOWNTOWN

A PERFECT FALL DAY IN DOWNTOWN KAMLOOPS MORNING There’s nothing like picking up a seasonal latte from your favourite cafe to start your day. Bring a book and relax in the chatter of the coffee shop. Next, wander through Barnacle Records and find new tunes.

MIDDAY Grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants in the downtown core. Choose a Kamloops staple like Hello Toast or try a new spot like The Chook Eatery.

AFTERNOON Enjoy an afternoon strolling through our local boutiques.

Find unique clothing, vintage items, plants, home goods, and so much more. Then wander down to the Kamloops Art Gallery to browse the incredible art exhibits.

EVENING Finish off the day with dinner and a movie! The downtown food scene offers something for everyone - and delicious cocktails too! Then catch an independent film at the Paramount Theatre.

Cold mornings and warm afternoons make dressing for the day a challenge. But never fear, button-ups are here. They work with any outfit. Do up two buttons and rock an off-theshoulder moment or leave it open with rolled sleeves and your favourite t-shirt!

TIGHTS AND LEG WARMERS

Don’t put your skirts away just yet! Give them a cozy vibe with tights and leg warmers. I recommend tan or black sheer tights and some chunky knit leg warmers. Don’t stretch out the leg warmers all the way up your legs, but let them fall into a natural place around your lower calf.

Extra points for pulling them over the ankle of your boots for a Bratz doll look.

I also love a long sleeve shirt under a dress. To top it all off, this way of layering is a great way to add a pop of colour to a seemingly neutral outfit.

ULTIMATE RECIPES TO SPICE UP THANKSGIVING DINNER

APPLE

STREUSEL

MUFFINS

2 cups all purpose flour

1 large apple, peeled and diced

1/2 cup, plus 2 tbls sugar

2 tsp lemon rind (optional)

3 tsp baking powder

1 egg

1 tsp. salt

2/3 cup milk

1/2 cup butter or margarine

1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Sift flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Cut in butter using a pastry blender or your hands until the mixture is crumbly.

Reserve 1/2 cup of this mixture to top the muffins and set aside. Add diced apple, and 1 tsp of lemon rind to the flour mixture. Beat egg and milk in a separate bowl and add to mixture. Stir to lightly combine, do not over mix. Fill greased or papered muffin tins 3/’4 full. Taking the reserved topping, blend it with 1 tsp lemon rind, chopped nuts, and 2 tbls. sugar. Sprinkle topping over muffins.

Bake at 425 F for 20 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.

Makes 1 dozen medium sized muffins.

A true taste of fall! Best with local, in season apples. Don’t skip the streusel topping for texture and crunch!

5 cl of Whiskey 2.5 cl of Brut Hazelnut Syrup 2 drops of chocolate bitters 1 dash of orange juice 1 orange zest Add an ice cube and mix with a spoon.

COLD GIN AND TONIC

4 cl of gin 10 cl of tonic 2 cl of Raw Yuzu Syrup lemon slice and rosemary sprig Put all the ingredients in a shaker. Add ice and shake for a few seconds then pour into a stemmed glass. You can garnish the glass with a slice of lemon and a sprig of rosemary.
