A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Welcome Home, SJGC Alumni!

Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence in Journalism!

Dear Alumni and Community Members,

It is with great pride and excitement that I welcome you back to the Hill for the annual “Grads Are Back” program. This year’s gathering holds special significance as we celebrate 50 years of excellence in journalism education at the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication (SJGC). For half a century, SJGC has remained committed to developing talented storytellers who elevate their craft and shape the future of media and communications.

We are fortunate to have a community of accomplished alumni who return year after year to invest in the success of our students. Your willingness to share your time, wisdom, and expertise continues to inspire the next generation of FAMU graduates. Thank you for your unwavering dedication to giving back.

I also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the members of the Board of Visitors and the “Grads Are Back” committee for their hard work in making this year’s program possible. Despite challenges from two hurricanes and an important election season, your commitment has ensured the success of this event.

This year’s theme, “Grads Are Back 2024: Unified Voices of Truth, Integrity, and Impact,” reflects the values we uphold as a school and as a “FAMUly” of professionals. I am honored to once again participate in a fireside chat, this time with Laura J. Downey, executive editor of WebMD Magazine and former editor-in-chief of Journey Magazine. Laura’s career exemplifies the excellence SJGC fosters in its students, and I am excited to share her story with you.

In addition to the fireside chat, we will celebrate a major milestone—the 40th anniversary of Journey Magazine, FAMU’s student-run publication. Since its first issue in 1984, Journey has empowered young reporters, editors, graphic designers, and photographers with hands-on journalism and publication experience. We look forward to honoring this legacy during the anniversary reception.

I also encourage you to attend the SJGC Colloquium, where two nationally syndicated radio mavens will discuss building thriving careers. The theme, “Future Impact: Building a Career Brand That Will Take You Anywhere,” perfectly aligns with our mission to prepare students for success in a rapidly evolving industry.

Thank you for being here and part of this journey. Together, we will uplift the future of journalism and communication. Let’s ensure that the next 50 years are even more impactful!

Sincerely,

A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF VISITORS CHAIR

Welcome Home FAMUly!

Dear FAMU SJGC Graduates,

Isn’t it a great feeling to return to SJGC? Thank you for making the trip back to Florida A&M University, a place we all cherish.

As chair of the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication’s Board of Visitors, I am truly grateful to see so many graduates back on the Hill to celebrate this milestone year for our program.

Educating the next generation of journalism professionals is essential to our future. We must share all that we’ve learned and continue to instill and uphold the values of integrity, truth, and responsible communication in an ever-evolving world. The insights you share with our students will help cultivate a new era of ethical, creative, and innovative leaders.

Please enjoy the many activities we have planned for this week. Take this opportunity to reconnect, reminisce, and find new inspiration.

FAMU is our shared home.

Welcome back, and may this homecoming be as memorable and meaningful as ever!

Warm regards,

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CO-CHAIRS

To the illustrious students of FAMU SJGC:

Twenty-four years ago, I walked in your shoes across the Highest of Seven Hills. My classes may have been in Tucker Hall, but I vividly remember several speakers who came to speak to us in Colloquium.

Ten years later, I was blessed to return as a panelist for “Grads Are Back” to discuss my career as an entertainment and higher education public relations professional. By that time, I had lived in Los Angeles for seven years, working on film and television projects such as “Ghost Whisperer” on CBS, “Welcome to Sweetie Pies” on the Oprah Winfrey Network, and “Sparkle” and “Jumping the Broom.” Working in Hollywood can be fun; however, my most memorable work has always been in higher education, where I have the pleasure of helping students discover where they want to go to college to pursue their dreams.

Today, I am pleased to be back home serving as your vice president and chief marketing and communications officer at Florida A&M University! This full-circle moment began at the “College of Love and Charity” with an Introduction to Public Relations class and the wisdom of many faculty who believed in me, including Professor Roosevelt Wilson, Professor Kenneth Jones, Professor Marcia Cross, Professor Joe Ritchie, Dean Robert Ruggles, and Dean James Hawkins.

I may have graduated before the new J-School building opened, but FAMU had already given me everything I needed to succeed: confidence, exceptional skills, and the determination to thrive.

So, as we welcome back our distinguished alumni for “Grads Are Back,” I encourage you to soak it all in! You are in the right place to accomplish every goal you set your sights on! Use this week of professional development to enlarge your territory and enhance your perspective on the possibilities that await you after graduation. I can’t wait to watch you exceed our expectations!

Sincerely,

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CO-CHAIRS

Dear Alumni and Students,

As co-chair of this year’s “Grads Are Back” event, it is a profound honor to participate in these milestone celebrations for the Florida A&M University School of Journalism & Graphic Communication (SJGC). This homecoming, we celebrate 50 years of journalism at SJGC and 40 years of Journey Magazine, our storied student publication. This year’s theme, “Unified Voices of Truth, Integrity, and Impact,” perfectly captures the spirit of SJGC and its influence over generations of media professionals.

It is truly inspiring to see so many alumni return to the Hill to give back to the school that played such an instrumental role in our personal and professional lives. The passion and dedication each of you brings back to SJGC strengthen our legacy and affirm our shared mission of excellence and integrity.

As we reflect on our achievements, let us look to the future with commitment and purpose. Our esteemed Dean, Dr. Lowe, and the dedicated SJGC faculty and staff continue their vital work to educate and prepare the next generation of journalists and communications professionals. In a time when integrity in our profession has faced significant challenges, we must ensure that SJGC remains a beacon of truth and a foundation of ethical practice for our students as they step into the world.

Thank you for your commitment to SJGC. Let’s make this homecoming an unforgettable celebration of our shared legacy and our ongoing dedication to truth.

Warm regards,
