News and Views New Cooking with Dad Project

Raising awareness of stroke in babies

It’s Saturday. Ten families are rolling up sleeves, donning aprons and preparing to make Spiced Salmon Fishcakes in their local school hall. The children range from 3 to 11, but the parents have one thing in common – they are all ‘male carers’ - dads, granddads, stepdads or foster dads, coming together to cook and learn with their children. ‘Cooking with dad’ is a new 4 year project set up by The Organic Cookery School, funded by the BIG lottery. Groups tend to meet monthly or fortnightly. Activities are free (although voluntary contributions towards ingredients are welcome). For more info on when and where courses run or to find out about starting up the project in your local area, visit www.organiccookeryschool.org or email info@organiccookeryschool.org.

Local Mum Paula contacted Families as she wanted to tell us the story of her son, Jaidon, who suffered a stroke shortly after he was born in 2006, to raise awareness that strokes, whilst thankfully rare in babies, can happen.

WWF’s Earth Hour Don’t miss WWF’s Earth Hour on Sat 31 March at 8.30pm. Join hundreds of millions of people turning off their lights for one hour on the same night, all across the planet. But it’s not just to save an hour's electricity - Earth Hour is about people coming together to celebrate the planet and focus on how we need to protect it, not just for an hour but every day. Sign up at www.wwf.org.uk.

“My pregnancy was normal, but my labour wasn’t great and I ended up having an emergency caesarean” says Paula. “Then, 15 hours after Jaidon was born he started Jaidon and brother Joshuah fitting. His left arm was twitching slightly and his lips went blue, but then it stopped. About 10-15 minutes later it happened again so Jaidon was moved to the special care unit. His fitting lasted periodically for three days. We remained in Frimley Park hospital, but they were working with St George’s hospital as no one knew why he was fitting. He had numerous tests, including a lumbar puncture to rule out meningitis, and then when he had an MRI scan it showed a blood clot on the right side of his brain.” “Essentially, he had had a stroke, which in a baby is called a cerebal infarcation. Apparently there is a 1 in 4,000 chance of this happening. It was a difficult time because the doctors didn’t know if there would be any brain damage. After 10 days we were allowed to take him home. Part of his brain will never be used due to the clot, but he has just had his 5th birthday and he has completely normal brain function. We feel so lucky that there was no lasting damage. Basically, because he was so young, his brain managed to make different pathways so that he didn’t lose any functions. The part of the brain where he had the clot is to do with physical movement, so he has had physiotherapy and he is still being monitored, but he is fine. I’m very grateful to both hospitals, and stroke isn’t something you associate with a young baby so we just wanted to raise awareness that it can happen.”

New Science Labs at Barrow Hills School

Zebedee’s Music has new owners!

Pupils at Barrow Hills School in Witley were told, “Science is the key to understanding the world” at the opening of their new science laboratories recently. Professor Sir Christopher Snowden, University of Surrey Vice Chancellor was guest speaker at the event and cut the ribbon to officially mark the opening of the St Albertus Magnus Science Laboratories. The new facility was named after the outstanding 13th century academic and theologian who is also the patron saint of science students. Both the labs, one for Years 3 to 5 and the other for Years 6 to 8, feature the latest technology. The refurbishment of the old science block was one of the initiatives set up to mark the School’s diamond jubilee last June.

Zeedee’s Music has been providing fun pre-school music classes in West Surrey for over 20 years. Becky has been taking her daughter for the last year four years and she says “Zebedee’s was the highlight of my daughter’s week - she really loved it. Last year I got the opportunity to teach the classes in the Waverley area, which I loved, so that is why I jumped at the chance to buy Zebedee’s Music when the business was recently put up for sale. I bought Zebedee’s together with Amanda, who had been teaching in the Guildford and Woking area, and we now run the business together.” Becky runs classes in Wonersh, Godalming and Cranleigh and Amanda runs classes in Merrow and Woking. They offer a free trial class, so why not take the opportunity to take your little ones along to see how they enjoy it? For Wonersh, Godalming and Cranleigh call Becky on 01483 272751 and for Woking and Merrow call Amanda on 01483 722434. www.zebedeesmusic.com.

News and Views children and adults under 40 than any other sort of cancer? Every year 16,000 families in the UK hear the devastating news that someone they love has a brain tumour. Many of those patients will be dead within months, and fewer than 20 per cent will survive the next five years. But it need not be this way.

Despite being the most deadly of cancers, brain tumour research receives less than 1 per cent of all the funds raised for cancer research – just 70p in every £100 raised. Now a concerted campaign is underway to raise public awareness and help fund the research that can literally mean the difference between life and death. 30th of March 2012 is ‘Wear a Hat Day’ - an annual awareness day which encourages people to make donations to wear a hat to school or in the office. Brain Tumour Research and its member charities will also be encouraging nurseries, schools, colleges, universities, public sector bodies and office workers to make a donation in order to nominate their ‘head’ to wear a silly hat for the day in aid of ‘Wear a Hat Day’. From sponsored silences to charity runs and office bake-offs, organisations around the country are being encouraged to raise money in any which way they see fit in order to sponsor their ‘head’ to wear a silly hat. Instructions to make your own bespoke hat will also be available to download from www.braintumourresearch.org alongside another downloadable PDF which will allow you to create your own hat simply out of paper.

Children’s Day Nursery

St Ed’s Goes Senior There are great changes happening at St Edmund’s Hindhead where plans have been unveiled to expand the age range to GCSE. Up until now the children have left after Common Entrance at 13 to go on to a wide range of senior schools including the most academically selective. Now there is another option for those parents looking for a high quality education at a day school with small classes and affordable fees. The Headmaster, Adam Walliker, commented “St Edmund’s is rated outstanding by OFSTED for the quality of its care and we will extend our outstanding academic and pastoral qualities into the new senior years.” St. Ed’s already runs very successful year groups in Years 7 and 8 and additional Year 7 places are available now for pupils starting in September 2012. The school’s very first Year 9 will open two years later in September 2014.

Fifty years ago less than 20 per cent of childhood leukaemia patients with the most common form of the disease lived more than 5 years – today almost 90 per cent do. That dramatic turnaround in survival rates could be possible with brain tumours, but it will only happen if money is raised for research.

Parenting

Setting Boundaries

R

elentless: That is the word I tend to mutter when I’m stomping around in a grumpy haze, steadying myself on walls and furniture, hand clamped onto forehead, begging the powers that be for strength as I surrender to the teethclenching exasperation that sometimes constitutes motherhood.

‘It’s just relentless.’ I hiss to myself. ‘Relentless! Why did no-one tell me just how damn hard this parenting thing was going to be?’ Actually, mothering is only really relentless when I am not quite rising to the challenges it is chucking at me. And the last few months, dear readers, I have mostly been struggling with: boundaries. Ah yes, that old brick wall that children just love kicking against, for as long as they possibly can, until their little metaphorical feet hurt too much to keep going. What is it with little ones? Why do they give us such a hard time? I mean, where is their respect?

Losing It Not long ago I found myself in that awful position of being the kind of mother I thought I would never be, losing my rag as I attempted to manage an all-guns-blazing tantrum, smack bang in the middle of town, at rush hour. Reasoning was not getting anywhere. Neither was shouting. In the end, I had to grab my boy by the scruff of the neck and yank him onto a bus, holding him at arms length to avoid his attempts to scratch me. Determinedly ignoring the bus full of tut-tutting commuters, I pulled him and his flailing limbs upstairs and mercifully found a place right at the back for him to howl himself into exhaustion. Not my finest hour. I really thought I knew about boundaries. Not only do I have a background in therapy, hey, I watched almost every episode of BBC3’s ‘The House of

By Helena Foss

Tiny Tearaways’ with child psychology expert Professor Tanya Byron at the helm. The theory is great; but practically speaking, I had no idea how tough it would be to draw that all important line without resorting to threats, bribery or a big stick. With the jigging motion of sitting on the back seat of that bus starting to calm us both down and normalise my blood pressure, I noticed that my internal dialogue was sounding horribly judgemental: ‘After all I have done for you,’ my inner embittered doormat moaned, ‘you ungrateful little...’ Cue the scratchy sound of a needle veering off an old vinyl record. ‘Noooooo!’ I yelled inwardly, sitting up with a jolt as if waking up out of a nightmare. This was not the person I ever wanted to be.

The Blame Game See, I know that blame is the easy option. The popular American family therapist Dr Phil insists that you have to teach people how to treat you. In fact, it is your job to point out when people are taking you for granted. But this takes courage, tenacity and, importantly, respect for oneself. It means giving up the niceness and need-to-beneeded so prevalent in the female conditioning. Lying in bed that night, still stunned at just how hellish my afternoon had been, it dawned on me that I had been giving into everyone’s wants apart from my own – and lost my sense of self in the process. It was indeed mortifying to mentally assess just how resentful towards my family I had become; how relentless everyone’s needs felt upon me. My son had given me the gift of reflecting back just how secretly angry I was at myself, for relentlessly ignoring my own needs. The art of taking good care of oneself, as well as our children, I have found, is being able to set ground rules as a matter of fact. ‘This is Mummy time’ has to be said in the same straightforward manner as ‘the grass is green’. It is just how it is; no need to defend it with barbed wire and machine guns. As a friend of mine likes to say, ‘once everyone in the family knows their place, even the dog and the cat, we can all relax.’ Helena is a hypnotherapist and writer about all things holistic and spiritual. Top 10 things you can do differently in 2012 to get the results you want with your children By Judy Bartkowiak

1. Focus your attention on what they do well. What we focus on

is what we get more of. Children need attention from you so give them attention when they do something well and they learn to do that thing more often as it gives them positive attention. 2. Use a feedback sandwich. When you want a change in behaviour comment first on what you like about them, then suggest what would be even better (what you’d like to see more of or less of) and finish on a good note; overall what you are pleased about.

3. Tell them what you do want.

Using the word ‘don’t’ draws attention to what you don’t want them to do. Instead reword the instruction telling them what you want them to do.

4. Avoid the word ‘try’ as it suggests they won’t succeed. Just tell them to do it!

5. Show them the behaviour you want. Demonstrate by example how you want your child to behave. They learn from you!

6. Keep your tone low and slow.

The more out of control you sound, the more they will tune out.

7. Ask them what they think they should do. Encourage them to

work things out for themselves and be resourceful then use the feedback sandwich. 8. Step into their shoes. A child’s world is very different from ours. They are not deliberately being difficult they simply see things in a different way. Understand that way and you’ll have the key to influencing them. 9. Be specific about feedback. When commenting on what your child has done well, point out the specific skill or quality so they learn from the feedback rather than generalising.

10. Decide whether they use a visual, auditory or kinaesthetic preference and match it. Children

have a preference whether they notice what they see, hear or do. Adapt your choice of words to match this and you will connect and communicate effectively. Judy Bartkowiak is the author of Teach Yourself: Be a happier parent with NLP and the Engaging NLP series of workbooks. They are available on her website www.nlpkids.co.uk . She is available at the Sunshine Clinic Woking for consultation.

The importance of Eye Tests

or years Sam and Paul Jones from Surrey suffered with an undetected eye condition that had a significant impact on their progress at school. Here mum Sue explains how she discovered that her two sons and husband all had the same disorder and why seeking professional help was the best thing she ever did. My two boys both attend a local independent junior school in Surrey. Sam, aged 9, the elder of the two is very creative and seems to have an amazing sense of balance – he was roller blading at 5 and could ride a bike at 3 without any help from mum and dad. Although he is bright in some ways, Sam struggled at school. He has a poor attention span and always found reading very difficult. Sam was identified as a child with potential learning difficulties and the school recommended that we sought help from an educational psychologist. I was horrified at the prospect of my young son being labelled and I initially rejected the idea of seeking help preferring to see if I could get to the root of the problem myself.

The school had tried everything they could to help Sam. No amount of extra lessons or varying teaching techniques seemed to make any difference to his progress. There were major concerns on the school’s part that they could not support Sam without the specialist teaching he may require. By this point I was at my wits end. I came across The Eye Academy by chance and decided it was worth seeing if they could help Sam. After talking to Romana Hashim, opthalmic director at The Eye Academy, Sam underwent a comprehensive 2 hour vision assessment. I was a bit worried that Sam would find the whole experience rather stressful. However, Romana quickly put Sam at ease and made him feel very comfortable. When Sam was first assessed he had a reading speed of around 40 words per minute. Romana detected a genetic eye condition known as convergence excess with accommodative insufficiency – basically this means that the two eyes are not working together. The eye muscles become over active which causes images to move around on the page when reading. As a consequence Sam also has a reduced ability to focus at close hand which causes blurred vision. Looking back on it now, I can see that alot of Sam’s problems stemmed from the fact that he could not actually see properly and this naturally hindered his ability to read. I feel relieved that although we may not be able to change the data processing side of things – he is dyslexic and this has subsequently been confirmed by an educational psychologist - but at least we have been able to identify and resolve the bit we can fix – the underlying medical problem. Sam now has a reading prescription and coloured filters which help rectify the problems he was experiencing. As a result he has better concentration and his reading speed has improved by 55%. Although Sam’s younger brother Paul is not dyslexic, he does have the same genetic eye condition, albeit to a lesser degree. He too experienced some difficulties and would talk of seeing rainbow colours on the page when trying to read. However, this time when the dreaded D words were mentioned dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia, I immediately knew what to do. We had Paul assessed in the same way and now he has also benefited from similar therapy. Although Paul has only been wearing his special glasses for a short while, he has improved his reading speed from 47 to 90 words per minute in less than six months. Romana suggested that as my two boys both had the same condition, the chances are that their dad had it too. So my husband, who up until this year had never read a book in his entire life, also underwent the same assessment. Now he too wears the special glasses. After spending years wondering how I could derive so much enjoyment from reading, he has become a convert himself and during the family holiday this year, for the first time ever, he read two books from cover to cover. So how does my experience leave me feeling? In general I think there seems to be a lack of awareness of the vision problems that may affect a child and what impact such a condition may have on a child’s ability to develop educationally. Some eye conditions are more prevalent in dyslexics and it would be beneficial if there was more awareness about these too. It is very easy to label children and to get an educational psychologist involved at the first indication that there may be something amiss. I feel very strongly that as well as an assessment with an education psychologist the first step should also include a detailed vision assessment with a specialist optometrist. Bringing in the expertise of a specialist has made a huge difference to my family and turned out to be the best decision I could have made. Both my children have significantly improved their reading skills and this has given them extra confidence which in turn affects them in so many different ways. My husband too is enjoying the pleasure of reading, so much so in fact that he has recently bought a Kindle!
