How cool are these two? "Gaining confidence, resilience, and forging new relationships are some of the amazing results that our mentors and their child mentees get from being part of The Kids Network," a spokesperson said. Set up five years ago, The Kids Network supported over 450 children last year across London and hope to support over 600 children this year. This can only be achieved with the help of volunteers. If you are over 18, have 1-3 hours a week to spare and would like to have a fun, rewarding, fulfilling volunteer experience, get in touch with thekidsnetwork.org.uk

Vaccine trial for babies
A new vaccine aimed at protecting babies from a respiratory virus is being trialled at the Royal Free London.
RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is one of the leading causes of hospitalisation in all infants worldwide and affects 90 per cent of children before age two. For most, RSV is no worse than a common cold but it is the most common cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in babies.

Don't screen out tantrums
Research has shown that using screens to calm upset children backfires in the long run because they never learn how to regulate their emotions.
The study of over 400 children age three to five, who were monitored for six months, found that those whose parents relied on smartphones and tablets to calm them down were more likely to have frequent emotional meltdowns, particularly if they were boys.
Scientists said this was because children could become dependent on screens to distract them from negative emotions and never learn to manage their own feelings or self-soothe.

Secrets of our first thousand days
Have you ever wondered why keeping healthy is so tough for some of us but seems easy for others?
And why so-called "non-communicable" diseases like cardiovascular disease and diabetes still account for most deaths around the world, despite the efforts of health care systems?
Did you know that unconscious communication with your baby in the womb helps their body’s control systems develop for lifelong health?
An increasing number of medical experts would say that we are missing a fundamental clue to what makes us healthy. Our lifelong risk of chronic diseases can be established during our first thousand days, from conception until age two. This critical time affects how our bodies are put together and how we will respond to the world we will live in, with its stresses, need for exercise and good diet, adequate sleep and healthy behaviours.
The secrets of the first thousand days of our lives start from the moment of conception. Once the egg and sperm have fused, the very early embryo begins "tasting" its environment. It detects signals about the world from the mother’s hormones and the nutrients from the food she eats. These leave small "epigenic" marks on the embryo’s DNA. It’s not just about the mother; the father’s sperm brings the egg its own marks too, affected by his diet and lifestyle. These change the instructions given by the inherited genes and can change how the unborn baby develops
As the foetus grows it senses more signals from the mother’s lifestyle and nutrition. This is important because some organs developed before birth must serve us for a lifetime, like the muscle cells in our hearts and the filtering units in our kidneys. Knowing the secrets of development and how they can affect risks of ill-health later in life makes us think: if all parents were better prepared before pregnancy they would give the best first thousand days to the next generation. Our children won’t remember it or grow up to thank us but they’ll stay healthier. For every couple, the period during which preparation is needed for the first thousand days of their child’s life is quite short - likely to be three to six months before conception. It is from this point that healthcare support needs to be in place.
Mark and Lucy, both at the University of Southampton, have spent decades researching the processes underlying human early development, now published in their new book What Makes a Person: Secrets of Our First 1,000 Days, available from www.bookshop.org

Ensuring your child is happy at nursery
By Kristen Harding
The process of introducing a child to a new care environment can throw up a number of challenges. However, some can be prevented if your child’s nursery gets to know upfront what you and your child need and want. Before a child arrives, staff should take time to understand your child’s home routine so that potential issues can be nipped in the bud. Settling In – A change in environment can upset a child and parents are generally worried when their child is unsettled. Communication is important at this stage. You need to develop a trusting relationship with the staff and settle into the new arrangement just as much as your child does. Communicating regularly and in as much detail as you need can ease your worry. In turn, any insecurity your child is feeling will also lessen.
Separation Anxiety – Regardless of the time taken beforehand, separation anxiety is a natural and sometimes unavoidable part of leaving a child at a nursery. Generally, separation anxiety lessens over time but you can help by ensuring that nursery staff understand as much as possible about your child’s individual needs, how they behave when they are sad, anxious

We can change: pupils reduce school's carbon footprint
Children hear about climate change from a young age, and this can lead some to feel what psychologists have called “climate anxiety”. Encouraging children to take action can do wonders to lessen their distress, and can teach them positive and impactful ways to help save the planet.
CFBL, a French-English bilingual school in Kentish Town, is empowering students to take action against climate change. In addition to classroom activities and school-wide projects, students can take part in several “Eco Committees”, which launch actions and policies to reduce CFBL’s carbon footprint. CFBL is proud to have been awarded the Eco Schools Green Flag award. www.cfbl.org.uk

or upset and what helps calm them. This will ensure that your child’s nursery cares for your child in the very best way during this difficult period.
Eating – Meal times at nursery can have a real impact on the confidence and comfort of a young child. What your child is used to at home may be very different, whether it’s the food or the way meals are taken. When you visit your child’s nursery, try to do so at meal time occasionally. Meal times at nursery, as at home, should be unpressurised and enjoyable.
Potty Training – Don’t start potty training as your child is starting nursery. When you do decide to begin, ensure it’s not at a time of change or a stressful period at home. Share training methods with your child’s nursery to ensure consistency of approach. For instance, do you want nursery staff to ask your child if he would like to go to go or do you want them to sit him on the potty at specific times of day?
Sleep – It is important that home and nursery work together over nap times, as the needs of individual children differ. If your child struggles to sleep at the nursery, a toy or blanket from home can provide comfort and help them drift off.
Challenges are bound to arise during your child’s time at nursery, most particularly at the beginning, but these can generally be dealt with as long as there is good communication between you and your child’s setting.

The importance of a holistic education
From before birth to age five, our brains develop faster than at any other time in our lives.
The way we develop, through our experiences, relationships, and surroundings at that very young age, affects everything from how we form relationships and thrive at work, to our mental and physical well-being as adults.
‘’The Early Years acts as a blueprint for our future," said Hendon Prep’s newly appointed Head of Early Years, Dominique RenoufSoar. She added that it is vital for education to be holistic at this age, supporting both children’s education and care.
"By inspiring the heart, mind, and spirit of every child, we can support the joy of childhood alongside preparation for the world beyond,’’ explains Mrs Renouf-Soar.
“Our aim at Hendon Prep is to deliver a broad and balanced curriculum which is pupil-centred, involves possibilities for child-initiated learning, and with differentiation and challenge for each individual child. We offer our children a stimulating learning environment to support discovery and creativity and we work hard to develop strong and effective relationships between staff, parents, and other children.
"We facilitate happiness and achievement, ensuring that by the time our children are five, they are ready to move on to the next stage of their educational journey at Hendon Prep with confidence and vigour.” www.hendonprep.co.uk
Know your pre-school from your nursery
By Andrew Campbell
Is a day nursery the same as a nursery school? Is there a difference between a pre-school and a playgroup? And where on earth does a kindergarten fit in? Here is Families helpful guide to the terminology.
Day nurseries provide childcare (usually from 3 months to 5 years) with a choice of full or part-time care and are usually open 8am to 6pm most of the year and can be run by private individuals, local councils, community groups, Montessori organisations, commercial businesses or by employers. Day nurseries run by councils or community groups tend to be cheaper but may have long waiting lists.
Nursery schools, school nursery class and pre-school offer a more structured early education experience for children age 3 to 5 years which prepares them for primary school. There are generally three types:
Local authority (maintained) nursery schools/classes –are associated with a primary school, run and funded by the local authority and either attached to the primary school or in a separate building. Most offer both full and part-time places and operate during term-time only.
Private nursery schools – can be privately run and may be part of a day nursery setting. A private nursery school may charge fees and have different approaches and philosophies to learning, such as Montessori. They either follow termtimes or can be open for most of the year.
Independent nursery schools – Some are attached to an independent school and are usually run by a private or voluntary organisation as part of the school. Some will not be

Playgroups/Kindergartens are less formal than nurseries. They operate for a few hours a day and do not provide full-time care. They tend to be run by private individuals or charities. Parents may be asked to volunteer support for certain periods.

A BeSafe high-back booster WIN!
Ride in style and safety
As our children grow out of their car seats it’s tempting to think a booster cushion is enough, but there are safer, more comfortable options.
A booster cushion only has a sitting part beneath the child, whereas a high-back booster seat has a back with an integrated headrest. On some, the backrest can be removed. For both seat types, it is the vehicle belt that secures the child. Innovative Norwegian brand BeSafe says high-back booster seats are one of the safest ways to transport your older children, offering:
Side protection - for your child's torso and head. Even if your car has side curtain airbags, your child might not be at the right height yet for the airbags to have an effect. Shoulder belt guiders – so the belt is always in the right position as your child grows. And a lap-belt guider will keep a belt in the optimal position over your child's pelvis. Support while sleeping - making children less likely to slouch leaving the seatbelt incorrectly positioned. A seat where the sitting area reclines means your child can nap even more comfortably without risk of slouching.
BeSafe has combined all these features in the BeSafe iZi Flex Fix i-size, available in six colours, RRP £239.
Families North London has teamed up with BeSafe to offer readers the chance to win a BeSafe iZi Flex Fix i-size. We have ONE to give away. For a chance to win go to bit.ly/compsFNL. See T&Cs at bit.ly/BeSafeTCs. Closing date April 30.

Meet George Webster
Families chats with George Webster, the 22-yearold TV presenter, actor, dancer, and ambassador for Mencap. George was catapulted into the public eye when he spoke about Down's syndrome in his myth-busting video for BBC Bitesize, and became a CBeebies presenter. In November, George won a BAFTA (Children and Young People Awards) for Best Presenter.
Congratulations on winning your BAFTA! How do you feel about that achievement?
I feel really proud and really honoured to achieve the award for presenter. I work with so many brilliant people at CBeebies and I feel like things are starting to improve for people like me in the media industry.
Tell us about your journey to become a presenter on CBeebies.
I always loved acting, dancing and performing at school and since then one thing has led to another. While volunteering at Parkrun, Sky filmed me for a documentary and I then became a Mencap ambassador. When my BBC Bitesize video
busting the five myths of Down syndrome got five million hits, CBeebies got in touch inviting me to be a guest presenter and now I’m a regular!
Who has been most supportive in helping you achieve your success?
My parents have been really supportive throughout my life and they always keep telling me ‘just be yourself.’ I always am and I want to say thank you to them for their love and support. Also, my support teachers at school, my friends, the NHS and local charities. What advice would you give to encourage other youngsters who are facing challenges and want to pursue similar careers?
GIVEAWAY!
Five signed copies of This is ME! picture book
Families has teamed up with BAFTA award-winning TV presenter, George Webster, CBeebies’ first presenter with Down syndrome, to o er five lucky children copies of George’s new book, This is ME!
This is ME! is a heartfelt and uplifting story that follows a little boy called George as he tells the reader all about who he is, his life and his experiences. George knows that having Down syndrome is an important part of him but it does not define him.
Featuring George’s real-life friends and family as well as a joyful cast of characters reflective of society and with bright and bold illustrations by best-selling illustrator, Tim Budgen, This is ME! celebrates uniqueness, being ourselves and how our di erences make us special.
Be yourself and dream big. We can all dream big so don’t let anyone else decide for you. it’s your life. Get involved with local performing arts groups too. What do you enjoy most about presenting?
I love everything about presenting at CBeebies! I’ve met loads of brilliant people and now we’re great friends. I also enjoy showing the viewers at home that people like me can be represented within the media and that ‘difference’ can inspire their kids’ lives. Their kids can have many role models, no matter who and what they are.
You’ve now written a picture book called This is ME! Tell us more.
This is ME! is about me, my friends and family when I was younger. It’s about celebrating differences no matter what we look like and who we are. It’s also about each person having their own glow inside that we all need to see.
The book illustrations are the perfect accompaniment to your rhyming words. How did the partnership come together?
My publisher, Scholastic Children’s Books, paired me with the wonderful illustrator, Tim Budgen. Working with him and my co-author, Claire Taylor, has been brilliant and a real collaborative effort.
Closing date: 21 April

What has been the best moment of your career so far? There are so many! Working with CBeebies, writing a book, winning a BAFTA, being on Casualty, going to the
premiere of S.A.M and dancing on stage with Talent Hub. Plus going to UDance National Finals to represent Yorkshire as the first inclusive dance group with Meshdance and watching my appearance on Strictly Come Dancing back on Christmas Day.
You are ambassador for the charity Mencap, which works to improve the life of young people with learning difficulties. Tell us what this work means to you.
It means a lot to me as I have many friends with a learning disability and they’re all brilliant. People like us exist and working with Mencap means our voices get heard. I want people to understand us rather than be scared of us. Where would you like to see your career heading in the future?
I’d love to do more presenting and acting work. I would love to be in Death in Paradise, EastEnders and Doctor Who. Or I could be the new James Bond - why not! Also, I’d love to compete on the main show of Strictly Come Dancing. If you had to bust one myth about having Down syndrome, what would it be?
‘People with Down syndrome are always happy.’ This just isn’t true! We have a range of emotions like every living person has.
What do you do to relax?
I love going to the theatre or cinema, watching films and tv and listening to music. Oh, and thrashing my dad at FIFA!

Bring back playing out
For the majority of today’s parents, the best childhood memories don’t involve expensive toys or organised activities. Instead, they remember the simple pleasures of playing and running around outside with their friends. Their strongest and fondest memories recall a magical sense of freedom and possibility.
There have been many studies into the benefits of free, unstructured outside play. Children playing together use their imagination to create games and invent rules. They learn how to collaborate, share, negotiate and resolve conflicts. They build resilience, independence and social confidence as they learn to navigate the world without adult interference. All valuable experiences as they grow into young adults. Playing outside is also the natural, joyful way that children are physically active and develop running, balancing, skipping, climbing, jumping and even ball skills at their own pace. You don’t have to "make" children do this; just look at a school playground at breaktime!
In the past, playing outside was the easy, free way that children got all these vital health and wellbeing benefits, every day. All it needed was safe spaces close to home: streets, patches of land, small parks children could get to. It didn’t need money, a car or an adult to take them.
Today things are very different. While screens and "lazy" children or parents often get blamed, one of the biggest
barriers is traffic.UK traffic volume has doubled since the 1980s and roads are now seen as "just for cars". Parental fears are justified, as the numbers of children killed or injured on our roads is shocking and should be unacceptable in any society. So what can parents do? Gardens are safe but not everyone has one. Organised activities are great but not always possible and don’t replace the benefits of unstructured play.
Play streets are one way to reclaim some of the freedom children have lost. By temporarily stopping through traffic on a residential street, neighbours can open up a safe space for children to play together on their doorsteps.
In 2009, a group of Bristol parents closed their street to through traffic for a few hours to give their children some of the freedom they grew up with. Their council then agreed that this could happen every week. The idea began to spread and they set up Playing Out to support other parents and residents do the same.
Playing Out brings more play and freedom into children’s lives in an easy, affordable way. Look into setting up your own space at www.playingout.net
Play streets starting up Getting started
Play streets have been spreading across the UK for over a decade and the positive impact on children is backed up by research: regular extra hours of physical activity, the opportunity to make friends with other neighbourhood children and picking up fun and useful skills such as skipping and riding bikes. In short, all the benefits of playing out for health and wellbeing that many of us used to have.
Many streets which have been playing out regularly for several years have found that it’s not just the children who benefit; it can bring the whole street community together. Everyone on the street is invited to join in, whether they have children or not.
Friendships between neighbours are formed or strengthened, while older residents often feel less lonely. When Covid left some elderly or unwell people feeling isolated, those living on play streets found that they already had a support network on their street.
Play streets aren’t just for children, they’re for everyone on the street!
There are four steps involved in setting up a play street: Consult your neighbours. It’s clearly got to be something that they will either actively embrace or, at the very least, find acceptable.
Apply to your council for permission. Not all councils have policies to support play streets but they can often be persuaded if they can see that there is demand from residents. In these areas, why not start with a street party (for the Coronation perhaps), focus on low key space for play and then take it from there?
Effectively communicate what is happening to everyone on the street.
Release your kids to play out. On the day, volunteer stewards supervise the road closure so that residents who need to can still drive in and out and the disruption to neighbours is minimal.
All the information and support you need to take this further is at www.playingout.net

Top value family destinations ✈
Travelling as a family can seem quite a financial outlay but with careful planning you can still find destinations that offer excellent value for money.
Turkey – Make the most of long, warm Turkish summers. Choose from many family-friendly resorts and eat out like a king as a three-course meal can be just £7.50 a head in the popular beach resort of Marmaris (right), while a round of drinks is less than £5.
Montenegro – a great alternative to its popular neighbour Croatia, with cheaper prices and quieter beaches. Boasting golden beaches, whitewashed villages and lush green forests, it’s one of the most picturesque spots in the Balkans.
Mauritius – Looking further afield, Mauritius offers prices almost half those of the neighbouring Seychelles. With white sands, crystal-clear waters and adrenalin-filled activities, Mauritius has something for children and adults of all ages.
Jamaica – the Post Office LongHaul Holiday Report's best value destination in the Caribbean.
Montego Bay is perfect for families wanting an active holiday, keeping beach lovers to snorkellers entertained, or explore the rainforest.
South Africa – not be the cheapest place to get to but once
there you won’t have to dig too deeply, at around £20 per person for a three-course meal with wine in Cape Town and £1.55 for a coffee. The country offers the perfect combination of wildlife, exploration and relaxation: a once in a lifetime family adventure! Albania – Although relatively unknown to tourists, Albania is packed with things to see and do, with a surprising number of attractions that kids will love. A three-course meal and wine wouldn’t cost more than £20 for a family. The Albanian Riviera has some beautiful sandy beaches. Sri Lanka – is open for tourism and the pound is strong against the rupee, providing very good value for money for families – and a fantastic adventure. Once you are there, it's incredibly easy to holiday on a budget with food, transport and accommodation all relatively affordable. Plus, travelling around this beautiful country by train is great value and fun for families.
