This Independence Day, the Indian diaspora in the UAE rose as one, honoring India’s 79th year of freedom and reaff irmed their unbreakable bond with the homeland.
At the India Social and Cultural Centre (ISC) in Abu Dhabi, families, dignitaries, and cultural groups converged beneath the tricolour The air vibrated with patriotic melodies and vibrant dances, but it was the children’s moving play, “Freedom Then and Now,” that captured the essence of azaadi, reminding all that freedom is not a history lesson, but a living duty ISC President Mr Jayachandran reminded the gathering, “It is our unity and love for our motherland that keeps our culture and spirit alive, no matter where we are. ”

In 1977, Aravindakshan reached the UAE the hard way, aboard a cargo ship from Kerala, then into the water and onto shore with nothing but a tenth-grade education, his mother’s resolve, and a plan to lift his family The f irst years were heavy, literal work Hauling cement under the sun, recovering from injuries, and starting again when luck ran thin He kept going Each day moved him a step forward He did not chase big dreams He worked with extreme sincerity and held fast to his ethics, and that carried him forward
The turning point came at ESAB Middle East, a Swedish enterprise where he joined as a truck driver in a three-person unit Over 32 years he rose through the ranks and f inished as General Manager, leading more than 200 employees People remember the way he led by example, with clear standards, and a steady insistence on doing the right thing even when no one was watching Titles mattered less to him than keeping his word
After retiring, he wasn’t done With his eldest son, Abhilash, he co-founded Arsa Welding & Machinery Equipment Trading, an off icial ESAB distributor that let him continue the industrial journey he had helped build From driver to leadership to legacy, the arc holds together.
The rest of his life kept the same line of quiet loyalty and practical care He married his childhood neighbour, Indira, and raised two sons with the values he lived by He paid fees for children who needed school, helped in medical emergencies, and stood behind families who were struggling back home. There are moments when destiny, faith, and the longing to belong all meet upon a riverbank For a son of the diaspora, raised among echoing tales of Sanatan dharma but far from the sunbaked ghats of Bharat, MahaKumbh 2025 was never meant to be just another event This was initiation

Landing in Prayagraj on the misty pre-dawn of the f irst snan, I felt the pull of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati not only as rivers, but as the eternal energies that bind all seekers For 7 days I lived, worked, meditated, and healed on these noisy, chaotic, yet impossibly serene ghats, both an observer and, f inally, a child of this living ocean
Never in my life did I imagine witnessing humanity at such a scale The scale of what unfolded was beyond imagination More than 663 million souls converged for MahaKumbh 2025 over a 45day period

I saw Sanatan not as a set of strict beliefs, but as a living, flexible adaptive wisdom For those raised abroad, MahaKumbh 2025 was the evidence You can be born anywhere, but you always have a place in the river’s embrace May all who seek healing, identity, or joy f ind it here and carry a drop of the Sangam back into their worlds
