Letter from our CEO

Village Life at Faircape

This is the second September where we again have to, unfortunately, acknowledge the presence and effects of COVID-19. The good news is that 98% of our residents have been vaccinated, increasing the safety of those around them. What we all thought would bring an end to this terrible disease appears at this stage to be a pause in the endless cycles of mutations and changing forecasts as to when this disease will be conquered.

I state the above because just as we begin to prepare to open our healthcare to visitors we read about some first-world countries having their highest infection rates ever.

We have always maintained that our residents in their homes can make their own choices with regards to their safety. They all understand the risks and can choose to take them by deviating from guidelines or not. Our job as managers is to make it possible for residents in their homes to be able to make these choices as simply as possible.

When, however, it comes to the Healthcare Centres we have a number of residents living in close proximity who have no alternatives and rely on us to keep them safe. We consult with

our doctors and other professionals to devise protocols to ensure the safety of our healthcare residents as best we can.

Some families are not happy that room visits are still not allowed. We have made a place for family visitations to take place in an outside, well ventilated, area. We believe that with the warmer weather this should offer ample opportunity for family visits.

Our clinical advice from our doctors is to maintain a state of alert and safety, and therefore request that family members understand the reason for these protocols, with the safety of their loved ones being our prime concern.

In spite of the COVID risk, with the vaccinations having been accomplished, there is a sense of relief and a wish to open our clubhouses and bars for dining and entertaining. The new guest feedback system shows an overwhelmingly positive response to our food and service quality. Our thanks go to our hardworking catering and service teams who have shown dedication in striving to achieve service excellence in these difficult times. This has been achieved in spite of absences of team members due to COVID, when other members have stepped in to fill the void without hesitation.

4 FAIRCAPE LIFE

There has been ongoing discussion with village managers with regards to the residents’ response to the replacement of the village sister role with that of a healthcare coordinator. When Faircape bought into the retirement villages, some of them had village sisters whose management and role was not clearly defined. Their role predominantly centered around managing the village clinic, but also to visit residents requiring help. There was no formal emergency care response service in place and in some instances, village sisters were attending to residents requiring emergency care and acting beyond their legal scope of practice as set out by SANC.

Faircape subsequently contracted with various emergency services at our cost to ensure that residents had a trained and capable response to emergency care. Faircape Health, an independently owned and managed company, operates a clinic to deliver primary health care to our residents. The village coordinator will deliver the same primary health care to those residents who cannot visit the clinic.

Faircape Health has, in the eight years under our ownership, developed a multidisciplinary team approach to managing residents’ healthcare. We initially employed an occupational therapist in each village, headed and directed by the Group occupational therapist. We then added a group dietician, and a group social worker. We have further expanded the social work team and added additional social workers. We have aligned ourselves with a medical practice of four doctors

who primarily deal with our patients in the Faircape Health Tokai subacute facility, where we have achieved a 98% 5 star rating.

These same doctors are available to offer their clinical input in all of our village healthcares and have been responsible since January of this year for setting guidelines on the management of COVID-19 in our healthcare centres. They have collated the clinical advice from the WHO, NHS, and CDC and set out guidelines to doctors in our healthcare facilities who have signed service level agreements where they have agreed to a collaborative approach to the treatment of our healthcare residents.

These same teams above meet once a month and discuss an action plan to manage any residents who have been flagged as vulnerable by the nursing staff, village managers or anybody else who has reported concerns regarding their fellow residents. These concerns are often not nursing concerns, but safety concerns, mobility concerns, mental health concerns where we now have professionals in each of these fields to render assistance and guidance to our residents.

We are proud of these professionals, whose commitment to excellence will ensure that the residents in our Faircape Retirement Group Villages are living in the best place that they can possibly be in their retirement years.

LETTER FROM THE CEO

Life Rights

What are the benefits of this model?

Life rights are a growing trend in South Africa and for good reason. A life right is a real right to occupy a specific property for the remainder of the holder’s life. They come with a host of benefits compared to conventional ownership models.

Life Rights Holders are Legally Protected Life rights are regulated in terms of the Housing Development Schemes for Retired Persons Act 65 of 1988. The act is intended to protect the rights of retired people and prevent exploitative practises.

No Transfer Duty

Unlike conventional ownership models, acquiring a life right doesn’t involve any transfer duty or VAT.

Quick Registration

Registration is quick and easy because the new life right doesn’t need to be registered at the Deeds Office.

Estate Planning

When the life right terminates, the life right holder or the estate is simply

refunded in accordance with the life right agreement. The funds are received much quicker than they would be if the property was owned as no masters consent, heirs consent or deeds office registration is required to give effect to the termination.

These are just a few of the benefits of the life right model. In addition, Faircape Life has many more unique features for residents to enjoy such as fixed levies that increase only by CPI, the benefit of moving into a newly refurbished unit and access to Healthcare deposit waivers and loans when transferring to Healthcare during one’s termination notice period. Faircape continues to invest in its facilities to ensure it’s retirement schemes are not just well maintained but also in line with modern trends and technological advances.

To date, Faircape Group has broken ground on a number of large scale developments in the Western Cape. Faircape has built it all - almost 178,000 m2 of commercial and office space, and over 3600 residential units.

The company is responsible for some of the most iconic buildings in Cape Town. Over and above the incredible Faircape Life villages, Faircape also built Blackriver Office Park, Wembley Square, The Empire in Muizenberg, The Boulevard Office Park in Woodstock and Harbour Bridge at the Waterfront, to name just a few.

This illustrious heritage of property development and proven track record of property management enabled the Group to expand its offerings to 16 different segments in the sector. Texas Hold ‘Em Tips from the Pros

Poker is a wonderful, social card game that gives friends an excuse to get together. It can keep our minds sharp too! It helps us to hone and refine our ability to analyze risk vs reward ratios. Take a look at these top tips from professional poker players to improve your game.

Establish a Bluff Protocol

Let your pocket cards dictate your bluff. A pattern of easy-to-call bluffs is one of the fastest ways to lose at poker. So, by letting a pair of pocket cards with potential to turn into winning hands on the flop be your guide, you can up the ante pre-flop. This gives you the chance to increase the pot and potentially fold should the river not be in your favour.

Check on the Flop

Even veteran players sometimes miss out on this tactic. Too often players up the ante on the flop if their pocket cards are good. Checking on the flop with good pocket cards prevents the table from establishing a precedent to your betting patterns. Checking on the flop will also help you to rope weaker hands

into upping the ante further.

Uncertain? Fold. Folding a reasonably strong hand when you’re uncertain about the strength of your opponent’s hand is one of the hallmarks of a good player. It’s difficult to resist the curiosity to see your opponents pocket cards but it can be costly to let curiosity get the better of you.

Don’t Let the Table See the Flop for Free If you have strong pocket cards on the draw, you can quickly muscle out the table by upping the ante pre-flop. Like we mentioned previously, curiosity is hard not to indulge and the same is true for your opponents. So, you can use this fact to your advantage by forcing the ante up before the river has even been revealed.

Try these tactics at your next friendly get together and see if they work. Just remember, there’s no silver-bullet to poker but it’s always good to have another trick up your sleeve. But most importantly, have fun!

Movies to Be Inspired By

How I Learned to Stop Worrying & Re-Watch These Classics

Popcorn, a glass of wine, and engrossing entertainment. Movie nights are a regular social event at all Faircape Life villages. Take a look at some of our favourite feelgood films to celebrate spring and usher in a new beginning.

My Fair Lady (1964) - George Cukor

“My Fair Lady” is a classic for many reasons and its message still resonates with audiences today: Beyond the facade of class differences, we’re more similar than we are different and chance encounters have the power to shape us for the better. If this flick doesn’t inspire you to make new connections, nothing will!

Under The Tuscan Sun (2003) - Audrey Wells

“Under The Tuscan Sun” is a modern classic for the right reasons. It’s a tale of Frances Mayer (played by the enchanting Diane Lane), who after divorce and losing her house takes a trip to Italy and finds herself the new owner of a dilapidated villa. It’s a love song to human

connection, neighbours, and new beginnings. Watch for a breath of fresh air.

Seabiscuit (2003) - Gary Ross 2003 was a bumper year for feel-good flicks. “Seabiscuit” raced to the top of the box office and the story continues to enrapture some 18 years later. Small and underestimated, Seabiscuit galloped into triumph despite the odds. It’s the story of perseverance and a reminder that glory is for all of us to grasp, no matter how small we may feel.

The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) - Gabriele Muccino

Based on the true story of Chris Gardner, a homeless father turned successful stock broker, motivational speaker, and business owner. A real rags to riches story that’s sure to renew hope and inspire optimism. It’s never too late, and the odds are never stacked so far against us that we cannot overcome! (Be sure to bring tissues. Tears will be shed.)

It germinated into a lifelong career after having studied at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Now, with over 14 years of experience in the field, she’s a seasoned veteran, but her passion is just as fresh as it’s ever been.

Basil is as useful as it is delicious!

Let’s take a look at her top 5 tips for getting the most out of spring:

• The first week of spring is Arbor week in South Africa! Planting a tree is always a lovely way to welcome in the warmer months.

• Before the hot summer months set in, ensure your garden is well fed with fertilizers and compost. Don’t forget to put mulch on your beds. It helps to limit weed growth and keep the moisture in the soil for longer.

• With the mercury rising, pay closer attention to any bugs or signs of disease on your plants. Companion planting is a fun way to protect your plants without nasty chemicals. Basil

(Ocimum basilicum), for example, is amazing at keeping aphids away (and delicious too).

• Spring is the best time to scarify, aerate, and top dress the lawn to ensure supreme growth in the summer months.

• If any of your plants need repotting, now is the time to do it! Repotting in the spring gives the plants the full benefit of the summer months to settle and grow, ensuring a healthy full show.

With this bouquet of gardening tips in your hands, seize the moment and make the most of spring!

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Lynn Siljeur is the Occupational Therapist at Bridgewater Manor Healthcare.

She’s served residents for almost 6 years. Before that she spent close to four years as an OT and public servant for the Eastern Cape Government at Humansdorp Hospital, after being placed there for a community service year. She has a passion for all things related to mental health and graceful ageing. “Every moment is a fresh beginning.” -T.S. Eliot

They say the only constant in life is change. While that may be true, we also believe in the power of human adaptability. When faced with life’s ups and downs, our resiliency is what truly defines us.

Throughout our lives, we encounter changes and challenges that we don’t expect. Yet, here we still are! Repeatedly leaving our comfort zone, adapting, and transitioning through the various chapters of life is something that we’re all born to do.

As Occupational Therapists, we often take up the duty of supporting and assisting those transitioning into the healthcare setting. A new beginning is sometimes seen with trepidation. That’s why we’ve put together a list of tips on how to adapt, accept, and continue growing:

Be Kind to Yourself

Times of change often come with feelings of uncertainty. That’s okay. Just remember that you’re human, and that means you can’t operate at 100% capacity all the time. Don’t beat yourself up. Know that you have the power to adapt in due time!

Write Down Your Gratitudes

During the tumult of change, it can be easy to let negative voices prevail. One of the most powerful tools at our disposal for soothing negative emotions is gratitude. No matter how dark the cloud may seem, it also brings with it nourishing rains.

Practice Acceptance

Practicing acceptance means learning to let go of the things you can’t control, and concentrating on the things you can. None of us have the power to control everything, and understanding this will release us of much frustration.

View Life as a Narrative

Much of what we believe to be true about ourselves and our circumstances is simply a story we’ve told ourselves and others. Flipping a narrative from “I’m afraid of change”, to “I’ve always been able to adapt” will empower you.

Talk It Out

Talking about the changes you’re encountering can be very healing. You might discover that others have adapted to similar changes and can share with you their own success stories. We’re in this together!

Starting something new comes with its own set of challenges and we hope that our tips can help you along your journey.

ISSUE 15 21

Overcoming Stigma

Mental Health Matters

With awareness and understanding regarding mental health increasing in recent years, the social stigma surrounding it is slowly eroding. However, stigma is not only an external experience. Many of us still suffer from internalized stigma to mental health.

If a person absorbs the negative messages and stereotypes about their diagnosis, then they will be suffering from internalized stigma. It’s important for us to not allow negative messages and stereotypes to become part of how we see ourselves.

Internalized stigma may lead to trying to hide symptoms, an aversion to getting help, or avoiding social interactions – none of which contribute to healing. That’s why it’s important to consciously try and mitigate the effects of internalized stigma.

Here are some ways we can overcome stigma:

There’s no shame in getting help No matter what the circumstances, or how dire they may seem, there is help.

Professional assistance is available.

Connect with others

Talking about your challenges with others can help you to feel better. Isolation and loneliness are some of the leading contributing factors to worsening depression for example.

You are not your diagnosis

Too often is a diagnosis confused with a label. It’s important to not self-identify as a mental illness. Instead of saying, “I am depressed,” say rather, “I have depression”.

You are not alone

Despite any feelings or thoughts to the contrary, you are not alone. There are many others out there who have not only suffered similar ailments but have completely overcome them.

Stigma, both internal and external, robs us of our dignity. Unshackling ourselves from isolation, blame and secrecy will help us live a fuller life with more joy.

THE ROLE OF A SOCIAL WORKER

The role of a social worker is well known but not all that well understood. Simply put, social workers labour to protect human rights at all stages of life. Social workers connect people and resources to address many different life challenges and enhance wellbeing.

Social workers help in many different ways. Here are a few of the ways they can help:

Environmental Ensuring the environment caters for the residents’ changing capacities as stipulated in the Older Persons Act.

Emotional

Provide emotional support to residents and family members as identified by the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT).

Intellectual Assisting care decision making in the absence of family, next of kin, or curator when the resident has impaired capacity to make decisions.

Psychological Counselling and debriefing to come to terms with changes to physical ability and independence.

Physical Assist with care provision of residents at risk due to ill health. Investigate allegations of physical abuse or neglect. Facilitation of family meetings to discuss care needs and options available.

Financial Ensure care implemented is financially sustainable. Investigate any concerns of financial exploitation. Refer for curatorship applications.

Social

Connect residents to support structures.

Faircape Health recognises the invaluable skills of these professionals. That’s why all healthcare centre’s have incorporated their services into the Multidisciplinary Teams. Residents at all six villages have access to the services of social workers in order to ensure a full continuum of care.

Had someone said that as we celebrated Christmas and New Year of 2019, a pandemic would be around the corner, I wouldn’t have believed them.

In March of 2020, we saw our lives turned upside down. For an estate such as Tokai, our residents enjoy vibrant social lives peppered with some fantastic international holidays. Many of our residents’ families live overseas and being unable to visit them for extended periods of time, along with a reduced social calendar has proven difficult.

Thankfully, fibre internet allowed us to connect with family and friends with much needed facetime, build relationships with growing grandchildren, and strengthen

our communities. Apps like Zoom have allowed our bridge community to grow from strength to strength, and our group exercises to move from the gym to our lounges.

Our ability to adapt to an ever changing landscape is one of our greatest powers!

With all vaccines now having been administered we hope that things will begin to settle down. The strength and tenacity of our residents to ride this wave and not buckle has been nothing short of inspirational.

To new beginnings with a group of incredible and inspiring individuals!

After our last “family meeting”, we got to take a deep breath and begin again.

We at Clé du Cap are doing just that; slowly creeping back into the kind of normal we used to know. We’ve got activities up and running, friends enjoying a delicious meal in the dining room, ice cold beer and glasses of wine to round off the day at pub night. Isn’t this what retirement is all about – doing all of the things we enjoy?

The last few months have thrown some of us into a funny state of mind and we are cautious with anything we do. Our vaccinations are complete and now it’s time to venture out a little, even if to just come and sit outside with friends over a cuppa tea or a light café meal.

We have such amazing things planned for the upcoming months and we want to encourage all of you to also “begin

Now that it is spring, we all know what that means – West Coast Flowers! We always look forward to this trip and we just cannot wait to see what Nature has to show off.

As the year-end approaches, we will just have to have the most spectacular Christmas Celebration ever, after all, we deserve it. So, let’s start facing each day as though it was an adventure – try something new, eat something different or make a new friend – your options are endless.

My favourite season of the year at Heritage is spring. With the first whiff of the fragrant Jasmine flowers floating on the early morning breeze and the sneak peeks of the blossoms pushing out their buds, excitement is heralded as we anticipate a new beginning.

However, while we may have our favourites, every season is important and brings with it delights and challenges to face. In contemplation of this new season, we can attest to having experienced many new things these past 18 months.

I’ve been so amazed by our residents’ resilience and willingness to learn the intricacies of modern technology, and understand that words such as “zooming” have a very different meaning from planes in the sky.

We have stood together and heeded the call to vaccinate, not only to protect ourselves from this dreaded virus but also those around us. In doing so, we look with hope to a better, safer future.

Despite this action, some hard goodbyes have had to be said to very dear friends and family but at the same time, we’ve also been given opportunities to say hello to new friends as new residents have joined our community.

Plans are well afoot to celebrate 20 years of beautiful memories built on the foundations laid by our many wonderful residents who’ve contributed so much to the Heritage legacy over the years. While much of the future remains uncertain at this point, the Heritage legacy is to intentionally choose gratitude and happiness every single day for what we do have.

Every end leads to a new beginning, and a new beginning comes from an end. It does not matter what the reason is for the new beginning, as long as you take the next step on the new path. With each new beginning we learn to carry on, learn something new, see the strength in ourselves.

We will have several fresh starts in our lives, whether it be a new job, a new city, new family additions or new goals we set for ourselves. Whatever is to come, look at what you are leaving behind and then look ahead with excitement to the new challenges that you will conquer.

Bridgewater Manor

As the seasons change with spring on the horizon, we look forward to new beginnings.

The year has flown past us! Social activities were put on hold for obvious reasons but it gave us a great opportunity to make a few changes around the village. In 1988, when Bridgewater Manor was built, the cottages were painted mint green but in 2021 we decided to rejuvenate with a new look: Arniston White! We look forward to completing the now-look paint job by the end of the year.

Our village pathway has been completed. It’s marked with signs indicating how far you’ve travelled with wooden benches where we can sit and take a breather or just absorb the stunning scenery and beautiful views of the Helderberg

mountains. Thanks in part to the good rainy season, our gardens are in top form too.

Last, but certainly not least, the biggest news from Bridgewater which has brought so much hope for new beginnings is the completion of the vaccination rollout. This brought with it a huge sigh of relief for us all and we’re very grateful to all of the Faircape Health and Faircape Life staff who made this possible. Even though we’ve been vaccinated, we still urge everyone to exercise caution.

2021 draws ever closer to its conclusion and before we know it, we’ll be taking out the tinsel for Christmas! Until then, stay safe, look after yourself and remember that we’ve got so much to look forward to!

St James Art Club Outing

Blink and you’ll miss it.

St James measures just 200 metres along the coastal stretch between Muizenberg and Kalk Bay. Lucky for us, the Art Club made it their mission to capture its beauty on the 3rd of August.

Under a cloudless sky, the light was perfect for inspiring creativity. The vivid colours of the Victorianstyle bathing boxes really came to life! Creative and like-minded club members head out every second week to soak up outdoor scenery and countryside landscapes.

Surrounded by the beauty of the ocean, the mountain and the original stone houses in the area, inspiration came easily to our resident artists. St James and neighbouring Kalk Bay are definite favourites for the Art Club. The areas exude beauty from every angle, and hide unseen crannies to explore.

Silvermine Hiking Adventure

The always intrepid and daring Hiking Club ventured out one crisp Wednesday morning onto the mist-veiled slopes of Silvermine. Not to be dissuaded by the low visibility, the group always makes the most of their weekly jaunts.

The stone-laid paths make for comfortable hiking and all attention can be given to absorbing the natural environment. Golden Conebush (Leucadendron laureolum) carpet the area with King Protea (Protea cynaroides), and Tree Pincushion (Leucospermum conocarpodendron)

Yet still the delightfully bright Whiteflowered African Daisy (Arctotis aspera) made a cameo to brighten the hikers’ day.

Evidence of recent rains was clearly visible as well, with a tea-coloured pool of fresh water along the trail.

The casual and relaxed atmosphere is great for forming long-lasting friendships. The no-pressure games are fun for all who participate and a much-loved way for friends to unwind.

This is just one of the many amazing social calendar activities happening at the villages. Bridge, crafts, movie nights, restaurant visits and so much more are a part of village life. Faircape Life villages are centred on developing close-knit communities.

Beautifully landscaped gardens are the pride-and-joy of our villages. For many of us, pottering away among our plants is our idea of heaven. That’s why the Cape Garden, Stellenbosch branch is a particular favourite destination for Bridgewater Manor.

Boasting a broad selection of indigenous & fynbos plants, it’s a true Western Cape institution. With their primary nursery in the platteland outside Vredendal, they’re able to replenish their plant stock quickly and their selection is always immaculate.

Like all good plant centres, they’ve got a delightful, family-friendly coffee shop and well-decked bakery. Be sure to treat yourself to one of their red velvet cupcakes!

The Minstrel Minister

The good Reverend Doctor Alan Maker, or as he prefers to be addressed, Alan, is Onrus Manor’s resident disc jockey. But as his title may suggest, he wasn’t always on the airwaves.

Before his life as a radio personality began, he spent thirty-five years in service as senior minister of St. Columba’s Presbyterian Church in Parkview, Johannesburg. He obtained a B.Com. from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a Bachelor of Divinity from Rhodes University. His Doctor of Ministry is from Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey.

When he moved into Onrus Manor, his friend and South African pop sensation, Peter Lotis, presented him with the equipment he needed to broadcast from home. Alan was no stranger to public speaking of course, nor was he unfamiliar with the entertainment industry.

He’s enjoyed involvement with the SABC, and Radio Today for many years. But when he was first approached to be a disc jockey, Alan was hesitant. Robin Alexander of Radio Today was thankfully there to lend words of encouragement, responding “You can learn.”

At time of writing, Alan has recorded some 778 episodes of his music radio spot, “From My Window”, with no signs of slowing down. Featuring music from 1920 - 2020, there’s something to delight

everyone. The likes of Chuck Berry, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Ruby Murray, Eddie Calvert, Bill Haley and more are sure to get you bopping in your seat!

Tune in to “From My Window” on Radio Today (1485 AM) every Sunday morning from 06:00 to 08:00 on DSTV radio station 869! Animal Lovers Through & Through

As animal lovers to our core, Faircape Life is committed to more than ensuring all of our 6 villages are pet-friendly. Being truly pet friendly means making a difference beyond the safety of our village walls.

Since 2016, Faircape has contributed to animal welfare charities including the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS SA). Thanks to this legacy of support, Mike Vietri was welcomed as an AWS SA brand ambassador this year.

The AWS SA gives new beginnings to so

many forgotten, abused, or unwanted animals. They respond to reported cases of abuse and investigate dog fighting. They focus on education in schools and communities. They give veterinary treatment, food, water, exercise and safe shelter to any and all animals. No animal in need is ever turned away and this cause is close to our heart.

The good news is that you can help too! You can visit any of the AWS SA shelters to adopt, volunteer, or donate to make a difference.

Lourensford Wine Estate A Place Where New Beginnings Spring to Life

Ensconced in a fertile amphitheater of Hottentots-Holland Mountains, Lourensford Wine Estate spans 4000 hectares of forest, fynbos, fruit orchards and vineyards. The estate’s proud history started in 1709 when it was established by Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel.

Today, it’s a popular destination for connoisseurs from around the world and stands at the forefront of sustainability with recognition by the WWF’s Conservation Champion Programme. But this story may not have unfolded had Dr Christo Wiese not revived the winemaking tradition in 1998.

Thankfully, he did! And now the farm is a shining example and exemplar of sustainability. Lourensford embraces sustainability with 3300 m2 of solar panels (supplying 100% of its energy requirement), alien-invasive plant removal programmes, and conservation initiatives for local indigenous flora and fauna such as the Cape Leopard.

Stories of new beginnings like that of Lourensford Wine Estate are beautiful reminders that it’s never too late to reinvent! As George Bernard Shaw (Irish playwright) once said, “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”

Cape of Good Hope

An Interwoven Tapestry of Life, Optimism, & Beauty

“This cape,” Sir Francis Drake scribed in 1580, “is a most stately thing, and the fairest cape we saw in the whole circumference of the earth.” The intrepid Drake said this of the stretch we now call the Cape of Good Hope.

Despite its history as a graveyard of ships, the Cape of Good Hope is a place of new beginnings. Between the months of June and October, southern right whales can be spotted on their annual migration past the Cape of Good Hope. The whales make their yearly pilgrimage past Cape Point towards Hermanus where they birth their calves. They joyfully spring new life into one of the planet’s most turbulent habitats.

The cape itself was similarly brought into existence by a combination of resilience and turbulence. The ferocious, thundering waves crash relentlessly into the stalwart rock. The unceasing churn, over millennia, carved out the rock to form the beautiful cape. A distinctive geographical feature, not the consequence of erosion but the result of refinement.

It’s poetical that the Cape of Good Hope juts defiantly out of the ocean, and stretches mightily upwards. Her steep slopes, ascending to the clouds, are home to at least 250 bird species, 70 of which nest and breed on the shelves.

Orange-Breasted Sunbird (Anthobaphes violacea), glistening in a vibrant bouquet of colours, can be seen drinking deeply of the nectars hidden in fynbos blossoms.

Their long, decurved bills are a concise symbol for the sweetness of life: you have but to reach for it as it blooms before you.

The Cape of Good Hope is testament to the intractable resilience of life and optimism. It’s a place of extremes, a place of awe, and a place to be inspired. One only needs to take a scenic, 45 minute drive down the coast from Noordhoek Manor to find this interwoven tapestry of hope.

Remember to bring along your driver’s license or ID to qualify for special discounts on the Cape Point attractions next door! Pensioners can enjoy special rates on funicular tickets (the views are worth it).

Franschhoek Motor Museum

Parked on L’Ormarins Estate is Franschhoek Motor Museum (FMM). The motors on display span a 100 year track of history with one of the oldest piece on show being the 1911 Lorraine Dietrich. The museum has had a storied journey, and despite some bumps and chicanes in the road it continues to get engines revving.

Somewhat appropriately, the FMM started its journey far away from Franschhoek in Heidelberg where Dr Anton Rupert gave it the greenlight. In 1999, British American Tobacco took the wheel but shortly after that, operations stalled in 2003. A tragic, sputtering stop.

But a distant echo of roaring engines could be heard triumphantly in the distance. Mr Johann Rupert, son of the late doctor,

reacquired the collection of classic cars and relocated it to Franschhoek. The collection officially got off the line on the 7th of May 2007 and has been in pole position ever since. A fresh lap around the circuit for the cavalcade!

Much like the FMM was able to change lanes, and stay ahead of the pack, so too did some of their display pieces. The 1911 Lorraine Dietrich was one of the first motor cars produced by railway carriage manufacturers De Dietrich. It didn’t just change lanes, it completely jumped the tracks!

The 1911 Lorraine Dietrich represented a departure, and a new beginning in more ways than one. In addition to being a departure from railway carriage production to motor cars, it was also one

of the first cars to use a Cardan-shaft transmission in place of being chain driven.

She features a 5.7 litre, four cylinder engine rated at a respectable 28 horsepower. Considering that the Austro-Daimler Prince Henry held the land speed record for production cars in the 1910s at 136 km/h with 95 hp - the Lorraine Dietrich was no slouch!

Zooming forward some 80 years and we find ourselves at the origin story of another one of the FMM’s feature pieces: the Dodge Viper GT2 Competition Coupe. While FMM’s model is from 2006, her story began in 1991 when Lamborghini engineers helped Chrysler to reinvent a V8 truck engine as a supercar.

Lamborghini, with their history of tractor manufacture, was no stranger to giving workhorses a new beginning as powerhouses. Ten cylinders, 8.0 litres, and a thundering rumble that shakes one’s very bones! Reinvention takes many forms.

Taking our eyes off the rearview mirror, we see that the entire automotive industry is on the cusp of a new transition. Electric cars are blazing a trail towards the horizon (albeit quietly). Tesla, Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Toyota, BMW and more are racing to reinvent the car as we know it.

The FMM is much more than a classic car collection. It’s a synecdoche for life. Each of us have our own journeys, our own paths to travel. Each of us have our own histories, and each of us have our own destinations. With the open road stretching out before us, where will you chart the rest of your journey?

Why We’re Crazy About Quinoa

Quinoa is a very trendy grain at the moment. And for good reason!

This ancient grain was first used to feed livestock over 5000 years ago, and used for human consumption over 3000 years ago in the Andean region of South America. Due to an increase in popularity, quinoa crop prices tripled between 2006 and 2014!

Although pricier than other grains on the market, quinoa is a nutritional powerhouse. It is easily available, easy to cook and packed with goodness.

Here 5 facts about quinoa that make it worth adding to your diet:

1. It’s Naturally Gluten-Free

With gluten intolerance or sensitivity on the rise, this is an excellent selling point. Being gluten-free makes quinoa easier to digest for many.

2. It’s a Great Source of Protein

This is especially important for vegetarians and vegans. Quinoa is a complete protein, meaning that it

About Toni Smyth

contains all 9 of the essential amino acids that our bodies can’t build on their own.

3. It’s High in Fibre

The nutritional benefits of including enough fibre in your diet are endless. Fibre aids in digestion, reduces cholesterol, helps in glycaemic control and more.

4. It’s Packed Full of Flavonoids

Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants. Quinoa’s flavonoids combat oxidative stress to keep our bodies strong and able to fight off disease.

5. It’s Versatile

Add quinoa to salads, use as a side to curries, include in breakfasts and more! Our Faircape Chef’s have provided some mouth watering recipes for you to try at home, or pop in to one of the Faircape Restaurants to sample one of our quinoa creations!

The Next Chapter Competition

Proudly brought to you by Faircape Life & Wordsworth Books

The Next Chapter Competition is officially closed and we couldn’t be more excited to announce the winners.

We were inundated by beautiful prose and true lived experiences from the villagers. Thank you for all of the

New Beginnings & Happy Endings

-Geoff & Lynn Harris, Heritage Manor

As we aged, many things we used to take in our stride became problematical - home maintenance, health, travel, security etc; the list is endless. About three years ago, being in our late seventies, we therefore started looking around for our penultimate move prior to shuffling off to our Final Resting Place.

Rental income and capital growth provided by real estate investments had always been our financial backbone, so the Life Right option was an anathema. (Who would want to ‘invest’ in a property that you did not actually own, and on which there was no capital growth?!) However, friends bought a Life Right in Heritage Manor and our in-depth discussions and research eventually convinced us they had not actually taken leave of their senses! The security-oftenure provided under the guidance of the CPOA, plus all the living benefits of no maintenance, excellent catering,

medical (and ultimately frail-care) availability, physical security, congenial company and socializing, all added appeal to an attractive lifestyle. Who was it who said, “There comes a time in the lives of men and mice ---”; and THAT time had arrived!

While sad to part with our home in RooiEls with its magnificent views of the Peninsula across False Bay, we found that Unit 152 Heritage Manor had very soothing views of the Helderberg, was spacious and well-planned – we even managed to easily accommodate Lynn’s large dining-room table! And, to top it all, we were surrounded by friendly neighbours, beautifully tended gardens and lawns.

Thanks to our family and HM management, our move was seamless, and three months into our new lifestyle we now know we have made the right choice. We no longer needed to consider capital growth but chose rather to invest in, and secure, our future lifestyle.

We are extremely happy that we ‘came to our senses’ and made our move now while still able – and that our family

need no longer be concerned about us or our future security. With nursing staff available 24/7, and Vergelegen Hospital literally a couple of minutes away, emergencies can be faced with confidence that we will not squander those ‘Golden Minutes’ before receiving treatment at the hands of the experts.

Thanks to our friends and Faircape, we are loving our ‘new beginnings.’

PS. On Sunday 22nd August, we celebrated our 60th Wedding Anniversary with friends, eating al fresco on the verandah next to the dining room and enjoying the excellent catering from the Heritage Manor kitchen.

Groot Was Ons Verbasing

-Hennie & Annabelle Greeff, Onrus Manor

My gooiste Gônnapiet, groot was my verbasing.

Annabelle raak skielik ernstig.

The Reader’s Nook

Every Story Starts on Page 1

In partnership with Wordsworth, we’ve picked a pack of page-turners to delight and inspire. Each one has been hand-selected to prepare us for spring, to swell our hearts, and spark a fire that will carry us into a new beginning.

“The Four Winds”, by Kristin Hannah

A book about the enduring human spirit. Hannah masterfully brings to life that everyday heroism and indefatigable essence of people. A testament to hope, resilience, and a poignant reminder that we always emerge stronger.

“Still Life”, by Sarah Winman

Amongst the rubble of a war-torn Italy (circa 1944), a soldier and an art historian find each other as kindred spirits. A tender tale, written with extraordinary beauty, about human connection and discovery. Hope finds itself in the most unexpected places.

“A Gentleman in Moscow”, by Amor

Towles

Unexpected circumstances land the titular gentleman, one Count Alexander Rostov, confined to a hotel overlooking the Kremlin during the Bolshevik Revolution. His unexpected confinement leads to even more unexpected growth and rediscovery about his own true nature.

“The Garden of Babylonstoren”, by Franchesca Watson & Heidi Bertish

The true story of the plants and people who make the garden of Babylonstoren. Their very real history reveals what we all instinctively know: just like every plant sprouts from a seed, so does every great achievement start with the very first action.
