SPACES OF INFLUENCE: SHAPING COMMUNITY IN THE MODERN WORLD An exhibition that explores the tension between community and individuality, technology and tradition, power, and grassroots. ‘Spaces of Influence: Shaping Community in the Modern World’, a collective exhibition presented by Faena Art for the 2023 Miami Art Week, spans across the Faena District from the Faena Beach to the Faena Art Project Room. Presenting works by three artists, internationally recognized Sebastian Errazuriz (Chile) and Beeple (United States) along with local artist Kelly Breez (United States) with major works collectively addressing themes of community and change. Each work approaches development related issues in their own unique ways, contributing to the conversations of human connection, disposability, advancements
in AI and tech, to climate change. Sebastian Errazuriz’s ‘Maze’ lays out a monumental labyrinth on the Faena Beach inviting spectators to walk through and inevitably find each other in the center gathering point of this site-specific work, a place to have community talks and unite. In the Faena Cathedral Errazuriz’s presents ‘Battle of the Corporate Nations’, a contemporary take on the classical equestrian sculptures where the figures of Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos combat their global strength and influence. Sharing space in the spectacular Faena Cathedral is the work of Beeple, presented by
The Reefline with Faena Art, ‘S.2122’ is a large rectangular cube sculpture with a building structure from the future floating in a sea of rising waters. In a completely immersive installation Kelly Breez in collaboration with award-winning Chef Paul Qui take on ideas of community in ‘Dirt’s Dive’, a place where time seems to stop and art takes on so many forms, from the handwritten notes behind the bar to the knick knacks on display. In contrast to conventional labyrinths, this sand covered Maze is not designed to get lost or disorient but to find ourselves, to spark conversation and build community. An extraordinary public art installation where sand covered walls blend into the Miami Beach landscape against the backdrop of turquoise waters. Within this immersive maze where one never gets lost and all paths lead toward one destination, a symbolic gathering point. One inevitably arrives at the center of the maze where Errazuriz guides us to a space designed for congregation, a small plaza where we can gather to contemplate and engage in meaningful conversations. An oasis to temporarily escape, disconnect and reconnect with what is important. A place to have conversations on society’s upcoming technological and environmental challenges. Along with the unveiling of this temporary public art installation, Errazuriz releases an accompanying publication, downloadable via QR within the structure. AI Maze will offer insight into our future interactions with artificial intelligence, a guide for envisioning society and the possibilities ahead. Errazuriz believes AI to be the most significant development in human history, a pivotal moment in our time, more so than the printing press or the internet. Through this work the artist encourages us to contemplate AI’s profound impact on the creative industries. Maze: Journey Through the Algorithmic Self stands not only as a remarkable work of art but as a catalyst for introspection, dialogue, and exploration in the digital age.

BATTLE OF THE CORPORATE NATIONS 2023 Resin and Poured Marble Unique Edition 102.3 × 62.9 × 52.3 in
Battle of the Corporate Nations, a monumental, poured marble equestrian sculpture by Chilean artist Sebastian Errazuriz explores the reality in which we currently live where corporations have become the pinnacle of power and influence in our contemporary societies. The sculpture places Jeff Bezos atop a rearing horse while Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk engage in a battle with swords, a battle of modern-day titans. The equestrian statue which has traditionally been a visual representation of those in power dates to figures like Marcus Aurelius and even as far back as 6th century BC. Historically these larger-than-life monuments were placed in the most prominent public gathering spaces
towering over and imposing the leadership and authority of the figures represented. These modern-day moguls have not only garnered celebrity like status, but their financial reserves have also surpassed that of a small to mediumsized country and now wield substantial political power and influence. Sebastian envisions the rise of the corporate nations, “Expect corporations driven by AI to grow in wealth, power and influence, to the point where they are more important than countries (the countries of Microsoft, Apple, or Google) as sovereign nations with their own legislations and defensive militias, generate worldwide power shifts”.

S.2122 is meant to be a realistic view on the future of climate change. One where both the real severity of the problem is represented, yet also the sure will and strength of the human species to survive is also made evident. The artwork represents a vision of society 100 years in the future. The sea levels have continued to rise so many people are living in stacks of apartments, mostly staying inside enamored by the flashing lights of VR. As culture and technology have continued to combine and propel each other, modern life has become a mix of the mundane and unrecognizable with robots walking as
zombies while brains float in spheres drifting through the air attached to autonomous drones. This is a dynamic artwork that will change once every 5 years over the course of the next 25 years, with the water level increasing 20% each time until the tower is completely underwater. However, despite this the people will still be alive, having adapted to this new reality. My hope is that artwork initiates a more nuanced conversation on climate change that includes the recognition that while we might fuck things up, humans are a scrappy bunch and will do what it takes to survive.

ABOUT THE REEFLINE The ReefLine is a 7-mile underwater public sculpture park, snorkel trail, and artificial reef which will provide a critical habitat for endangered reef organisms, promoting biodiversity, and enhancing coastal resilience. A bar is one of the oldest and most beloved places for people to gather. They collect dust, objects, and stories. Kelly Breez’s immersive installation in the Faena Art Project Room, Dirt’s Dive is a celebration of just that. Breez is enamored with old dive bars because of their inherent lack of ego and pervading sense of humor, two things she sees as imperative for survival in today’s climate. That sense of humor tends to attach itself to all aspects of a good dive, and as a result, inevitably turns the feeling of the bar into that of a communal space. Strangers become close, boundaries are whittled down, deals are made and broken, love is found and lost. DIRT’S DIVE is simultaneously the celebration of an obsession and an homage to a dying breed of

establishment, where the dive bar is the lowhanging fruit. Breez wants to remind us of the reverence once felt for “old” people/places/ things, while our old Florida is aggressively erased to make way for a new one. Breez lures us into her mind and exhibition by creating an alternative universe of familiarity and curiositycombining installation, painting, sculpture, deep-rooted nostalgia, and a sense of humor. Moreover, this secret pop-up bar, undoubtedly the hidden gem of the city during Miami Art Week, boasts an exclusive collaboration with the award-winning chef Paul Qui, bringing his own expertise and anecdotes from his renowned food trucks in Austin, Texas. So, expect pure fun every night, with exquisite cocktails, delicate bites, a karaoke bar, and live bands.

Paul Qui rocketed the ranks to culinary stardom after winning Top Chef followed up by a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest. Top Chef judge Tom Colicchio once called Qui the most talented chef in the show’s history. Today he’s grown to become one of the most formidable young talents in the North America with critically acclaimed restaurants and a group of Asian-inspired food trucks in Austin, Texas. Born in Manila, Philippines and trained in classic French and Japanese cuisine, Qui takes a modernist approach towards food that’s playful, authentic, and unexpected. He’s a master at marrying classical technique with local flavors, while also taking inspiration from Filipino, Japanese, Spanish and French culinary styles. "Food is about memories, familiarity and comfort" says Qui who strives not to be pigeonholed into a single type of cuisine. Instead, he’d rather be defined by the experience of his guests, who keep delivering rave reviews.

BRAIDING IS AN ANCIENT RITUALISTIC PRACTICE THAT INTEGRATES PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE; MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT. IT’S A VISUAL REMINDER OF THE POWER OF THE COLLECTIVE ABOVE FROM THE POWER OF THE INDIVIDUAL.
ARTIST STATEMENT The braid I carry is a visual manifesto of what I believe society must do to be able to move forward; we must braid ourselves together and repair the social fabric that has been teared apart. I have been braiding my hair since I was a little girl, when it was an element of power that made me feel safe. Ever since I’ve been exploring the power of hair and the power of intention. My practice evolved after braiding a very special group of women and feeling for the first time the energetic connection we have as a feminine power. The braids I wear, which have many different versions, are always associated with a different chakra. The crown braid has a final knot that carries a daily intention to help a woman succeed in some way. The infinity braid, which looks like an 8, is all about connecting to the heart chakra. Through braiding, I trace the invisible thread that braids us and everything that happens, together. I’ve also realized how important it is to make this common thread visible in times of social transformation, which is why I started braiding women together and helping them connect to their ancestry through Braided Circles. I’ve been doing different braiding performances at the Mexican Consulate, the Coral Gables Museum, Sweet Pass Sculpture Park Dallas, The Box Gallery in West Palm Beach, Mexican Cultural Institute in Miami among others.

history and architectural heritage. The formation of the Miami Design Preservation League, a vital organization established in 1976, has since been committed to safeguarding and building awareness of the historical and architectural legacy of Miami Beach. As a Miami transplant and a trained architect, Liene was immediately confronted with the historical essence and importance of these architectural elements. Through exhaustive research she found archival photographs and books about these lost buildings and preserved them through silhouettes in this work. Bosquê not only hopes for Miami Beach to serve as an example, but she envisions the emulation of this legacy-preserving model in other cities, now more than ever. As the concrete jungle continues to expand around us, she questions the ecological and environmental impacts of this destruction and reconstruction. How does the disposability of these buildings reflect our position in society, how do we reach a point where we feel entitled to erase the past? Now, thanks to the efforts of the Miami Design Preservation League, areas like Ocean Drive have become a recognized destination for tourists, students, and architects to immerse themselves in the classic pastel structures iconic to the Art Deco movement.

In Remember to Dream!, celebrated curator Hans Ulrich Obrist collects an abundance of thoughts for the day, dreams, drawings, musings, jokes, quotations, questions, answers, poems and puns from some of the world’s greatest contemporary artists, musicians and more, handwritten on Post-it notes (and other scraps). From the reassuringly philosophical to the inspiringly straightforward, the ingeniously funny to the tenderly posthumous, Remember to Dream! (Titled after a note by
Carrie Mae Weems) paints a picture of the art world directly from many of the most celebrated creative figures of the 21st century. These include BTS, Marina Abramovic, Tracey Emin, FKA twigs, Gilbert & George, Grimes, Zaha Hadid, Pharrell Williams, Zadie Smith, David Lynch, Jonas Mekas, Frank Ocean, Yoko Ono, Eileen Myles, Arca and Vivienne Westwood. The book features a preface by Hans Ulrich Obrist and is designed by award-winning book designer Irma Boom.
ARTISTS
SEBASTIAN ERRAZURIZ One of the most prolific designers of his generation, Errazuriz is an expert in the art and science of creativity. His large-scale public art installations have included Times Square and the New Museum in New York. His art and design works have been showcased in more than 100 exhibitions and are included in permanent museum collections around the world. Errazuriz has been a guest speaker at Harvard’s Tech Lab, Tate Modern, and New York’s Museum of Art and Design.
BEEPLE Michael Joseph Winkelmann is an American digital artist, graphic designer, and animator known for selling NFTs. In his art, he uses various media to create comical, phantasmagoric works that make political and social commentary while using pop culture figures as references. British auction house Christie’s has called him “A visionary digital artist at the forefront of NFTs”.
KELLY BREEZ Kelly Breez is a BFA graduate from the New World School of the Arts. She is a multi-disciplinary artist who lives and works in Miami. She weaves a sharp eye for subtle humor into her work, acting like a mirror to the absurdities of life. With an uncanny attention to detail and the likeness to a sponge, Breez naturally absorbs the nuances of the unpredictable tropical wasteland she calls home.
DANIÉ GOMEZ-ORTIGOZA Danié Gomez-Ortigoza is a Mexican American multimedia artist whose work primarily takes the form of performance, video, and photography. She has performed and exhibited nationally and internationally at museums, galleries, festivals, and public spaces. Her work broadly explores themes of identity, interconnectivity, ancestry, and empathy. Her performances are ritual-centric, promoting communal participation and assembly. Her artistic process utilizes the body and the repetitious act of braiding as central components in reinforcing commonality, intimacy, and belonging.
LIENE BOSQUÊ A trained architected, Miami-based visual artist and educator Liene Bosquê holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from the São Paulo State University. Her multidisciplinary practice deals with the investigation of the sensorial experiences within architectural, urban, and personal spaces. Bosquê’s installations, sculptures, sitespecific projects, as well as her socially engaged practice works have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States; at MoMA PS1 in New York, Frost Art Museum in Miami, Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, among other institutions.

Which living person do you most despise? Myself, when realizing I didn’t take important observations into consideration. What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? Exhaustion. What or who is the greatest love of your life? My family. When and where were you happiest? The moments at work in which I’m coming up with original ideas. What is your favorite occupation? The one I currently exercise and I’m working to expand and improve. What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Agreeableness. On what occasion do you lie? On too few occasions. I need to learn to lie more to avoid getting into trouble. What do you dislike most about your appearance? I need to get back in shape. Which talent would you most like to have? Perfect memory. Which living person do you most admire? Elon Musk. I know that’s controversial. But I can make the argument. What is the trait you most deplore in others? The inability to deal with complexity. But a lot of evidence questions that many of his discoveries and ideas were his. How would you like to die? Under my own conditions, in a time and date of my choosing. If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be? I miss mom, but wouldn’t diminish her courage and sacrifice by bringing her back to life. What do you consider your greatest achievement? I am yet to achieve it… maybe in 10 years. What is it that you most dislike? Cowardice. If you could choose what to come back as, what would it be? Myself, but born 10 years later. What is your most treasured possession? My family. What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery? Regrets for what we could have done better at the end of life. What is your favorite occupation? The one I currently hold. What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Being born with, and then continuing to have, effortlessly great skin. Literally never—what do I look like, a not-real person to you? What do you dislike most about your appearance? I plead the 5th. Which talent would you most like to have? Being able to speak every language known to mankind. Which living person do you most admire? My parents, for various reasons. What is the trait you most deplore in others? NARCISSISM. If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be? I’d just like everyone to magically live closer :/ What do you consider your greatest achievement? Successfully breaking into the same awesome hot tub —and getting ample peaceful moment— at a hotel in Colorado for like... two weeks before anyone noticed.
