MIAMI ART WEEK

Art for All During Miami Art Week 2023, more than 50,000 art enthusiasts lined up to see Faena District’s four provocative installations collectively titled ‘Spaces of Influence: Shaping Community in the Modern World.’ Supported by Faena Art, the exhibition explored the tension between community and individuality, technology and tradition, power, and grassroots.

MAZE: JOURNEY THROUGH THE ALGORITHMIC SELF BY SEBASTIAN ERRAZURIZ

Faena Art Week brought together notable artist Sebastian Errazuriz’s pioneering explorations of technology, design, and community; local artist Kelly Breez’s vibrant and authentic tribute to Miami’s unique social fabric; digital artist Beeple’s kinetic sculpture highlighting the threat of climate change; and local artist Liene Bosquê’s site-specific installation based on the demolished and lost building silhouettes of Miami Beach prior to the 1980s. “Collectively,

their installations serve as an engaging lens through which we can explore and celebrate the evolving dynamics of community in our modern world,” said Alan Faena. Errazuriz’s headlining installation, ‘MAZE: Journey Through the Algorithmic Self’, was a veritable cynosure of public interest and activity during Miami Art Week. “Twenty thousand people RSVP’d for the opening and there was an ongoing block-long line to enter the maze all week,” said Errazuriz.

“People really enjoyed themselves!” Designed using artificial intelligence (AI) platforms Midjourney and DALL-E2, the sand-covered labyrinth erected on Faena Beach invited visitors on a journey of self-discovery while reflecting on how AI is increasingly shaping the world. The artwork urged viewers to consider the ways in which communal interactions will help humankind navigate the ethical complexities and potential biases that come with AI, and to ensure

that technology serves humanity, not the other way around. “It was incredibly touching to see people’s views of the maze on social media, how they would frame parts of the maze that were most important to them and capture the play of light on the walls at different hours of the day,” he said. In addition, Errazuriz’s Renaissance-style marble sculpture, ‘Battle of the Corporate Nations,’ was displayed in Faena Miami Beach’s Cathedral, humorously casting tech moguls

DIRT’S DIVE BY KELLY BREEZ

Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos in an epic struggle for global domination. The artwork was showcased alongside digital artist Beeple’s groundbreaking sculpture S.2122 (2023). Presented by Faena Art in partnership with The Reefline, the futuristic work uses blockchain technology, digital video and three-dimensional sculpture to depict a decaying building complex slowly being buried under water as hypnotic drones circle overhead. To raise awareness for climate change and rising sea levels, Beeple will raise the water levels in the work every five years until the building is completely submerged. “The inhabitants will evolve and adapt, symbolizing not just the resilience of humanity in the face of climate change, but also our inherent ability to thrive amidst adversities,” commented Beeple. Florida born-and-bred artist Kelly Breez presented Dirt’s Dive, an immersive installation in Faena Art Project Room that transported visitors to the nostalgic, vanished bar scenes of old South Florida. Weaving her personal history and local lore into a distinctive aesthetic narrative, the fantastical

bar environment was brought to life with mannequins, found objects, and paintings reminiscent of divebar decor. “Everyone who came to Dirt’s seemed utterly delighted and also kind of confused, which was a great combo,” said Breez. Set against the high-octane backdrop of Miami Art Week, the exhibition offered a poignant commentary on the disappearance of Miami’s vintage watering holes that are being swallowed up by modern glitz. “Dirt’s is meant to be a reminder that places and characters of ‘old’ South Florida need to be lauded and stay in the conversation.” For the 2023 edition of No Vacancy, a juried art competition supported by the City of Miami Beach that pairs mostly local artists with iconic Miami hotels to showcase their artwork, Bosquê displayed her work in the Faena Miami Beach Cathedral. The artist used a suspended aluminum curtain to create a skyline silhouette of Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival, and Miami Modern buildings that the Miami Preservation League works so hard to conserve.

FAENA THEATER

EVERAFTER A New Late-Night Soiree New York siren Rocky Lanes is launching EVERAFTER, that will unfold once a month at Faena Theater. As the master of ceremonies, Lanes will entertain the crowd with her showstopping vocals within an immersive club experience featuring red-hot performances from her chosen coterie of international artists.

What is EVERAFTER? A performance-driven dance party extravaganza! Expect performances unfolding throughout the theater, to the backdrop of vibrant music that never stops. If a performer is dancing onstage, you can be a part of that—an authentically immersive experience. I will spend most of the evening in the crowd singing and dancing right alongside guests. This is our party, where there are no rules—just an invitation for everyone to revel in freedom.

6

What cast of characters did you put together? We have an amazing roster of talent! Featuring international showgirl Lola Von RoX, who is the cocreative director at The Box in New York City and Events Producer for social scene expert, Susanne Bartsch. There’s nightlife icon and Playboy centerfold Haley Grace, along with Nina Lux, who lights up the stage in sparkling lingerie. We have a couple from Las Vegas, Mr. and Mrs. G, who were recently featured on Conan O’Brien’s late-night show, and will perform crossbow stunts. Flambeau will be

doing his famous fire act, not to be outshined by Elena Lee, Miami’s fan-favorite burlesque dancer, who is sure to keep the crowd entertained. What about the music? I’ll be singing two sets with incredible dancers to throwback favorites like Stevie Nicks’ ‘Edge of 17’ and ‘Gypsy Woman’ from Crystal Waters. The DJ will play a mix of dance music: feel-good house music, 80s, rock, disco, classic oldies, and pop hits.

ONCE A MONTH

What sets EVERAFTER apart in the Miami nightlife scene? We want people to feel like they’re in the right place to be in Miami. This city is known for its vibrant yet intense party scene, people often find themselves too self-conscious to fully embrace the dance floor. The goal is to create an environment where authenticity reigns, free from judgment. With almost a decade of experience in nightlife, I can confidently say that Miami has never witnessed a show quite like this before. When you fuse nightlife and theater it’s an explosion experience, and I am thrilled to be a part of it.

Jazz Series Grammy Winners Grace the Stage Faena launches its 6th Annual Jazz Series at the Faena Theater with a lineup of seven fantastic shows produced and curated by Grammy-nominated record producer and artist, Rachel Faro. The series kicked off on Wednesday, January 17th with one of today’s greatest jazz vocalists, Grammy winner Jazzmeia Horn, and will close on Wednesday, June 19th with Michael Mayo, one of today’s most outstanding young vocal talents. “We aim to bring a mix of established and emerging artists, most of whom go on to sign with major labels, win Grammys and worldwide acclaim,” said Faro. “We’ve often looked to the winners of the Sarah Vaughn Vocal Jazz Competition: Jazzmeia Horn, Veronica Swift, Gabrielle Cavassa, and most notably Samara Joy, who went on to win Grammys for both Best New Artist and Best Vocal Jazz Album — two weeks after we presented her! “One of our most notable shows last year was our Valentine’s Day show with the Icelandic/Chinese artist “Laufey Lín Bing Jónsdóttir,” professionally known as Laufey, who has arguably become the biggest jazz star in the world over the last year: her song “From the Start” has received over 222 million Spotify streams!” This delicate singer/songwriter and instrumentalist is bringing jazz to a new audience of young people and her show at the Faena brought in, “young fans who would scream at every song as if they were at a Taylor Swift concert,” said Faro. Coming up on February 28th the Jazz Series will present emerging artist Nicole Zuraitis, a current Grammy Nominee for Best Jazz Vocalist. “She’s an incredibly talented singer, in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald, who expresses so much joy and soulfulness onstage.” Other artists this season include established Cameroonian multiinstrumentalist and Grammy winner Richard Bona (March 13th); Accent, an international group of

8

young men who sing jazz a capella (April 3rd); legendary percussionist Sammy Figueroa featuring Grammy winners Cuban singer Aymée Nuviola and Cuban piano maestro Gonzalo Rubalcaba (April 10th); the Arturo O’Farrill Quintet, paying homage to Arturo’s father, beloved Cuban composer Chico O’Farrill, with guest Cuban rapper Telmary Diaz (May 22nd); and last but not least, Michael Mayo, who most recently recorded and performed with Herbie Hancock, Jacob Collier, and Jon Batiste, among many others (June 19th). “We try to bring music that will be both entertaining and pay homage to the great American tradition of jazz. No conceptual or boring jazz here” Faro says. “Also, a large part of our mission in bringing jazz to South Florida is tied in with music education,” explained Faro. “We’ve often collaborated with UM’s Frost School of Music and with Young Musicians Unite, who bring in budding musicians from Miami Dade public schools to help sell merchandise, assist the artists, and attend the shows. It’s a great experience for them. We’re also very grateful for our collaboration with WDNA, one of the few radio stations in the country that play jazz full-time.” Faena Theater is also planning to expand its programming this year with additional entertainment offerings. “We’re considering bringing in comedy acts and resident Miamibased Latin musicians,” said Brian Forti, Executive Producer and Director of Creative Entertainment at Faena Theater. “Both artists and guests love this venue because it’s glamorous, the food and beverage service are outstanding, and the theater is so intimate. There’s not a bad seat in the house.”

SA XONY BAR

Saxy Nights Are back Saxony Bar, whose name nods to the property’s previous life as The Saxony, a glittering Golden-era haunt frequented by the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra, embodies the classic elegance and genuine hospitality of a bygone era.

The glamorous speakeasy evokes Great Gatsby vibes with polished black marble and Art Deco brass trim. “Our aim is to bring back a traditional style of partying. A time when people came out to socialize, dance, and sing along with the music,” said Richard Filippi, a longtime fixture in Miami’s nightlife scene, who is curating Saxony’s entertainment alongside nightlight luminary, Alisha Talbot. “We are a dance party where our guests can let loose, celebrate music, and have fun with the people around them,” added Talbot. The team spent months searching for the right DJs to bring Faena’s vision to life. “Our one rule is that the music must consist of classic throwbacks,” said Filippi. “But we chose artists who thrive with creative freedom, so we’re placing the DJs in the center of the room behind the bar with a platform to express themselves as they see fit.” Guests can expect everything from old-school hip-hop and funk to jazz and classics. “If you’re looking to be in one of the most beautiful rooms in Miami, with great music, sipping on cocktails made with passion, Saxony Bar is the place,” said Talbot.

French Lux Faena’s French Lux cocktail is a refreshing antidote to long days in the Miami sun. Our mixologists use a base of D’USSE cognac masterfully crafted at the prestigious Château du Cognac, a 12th-century French castle and historic cognac house owned by Barcardi. The wine-based spirit, made from Ugni Blanc grapes, is stirred with strawberry-basil-infused syrup crafted in-house and balanced with a tangy dash of fresh lemon juice. It’s topped off with the clean and crisp effervescence of Louis Pommery Brut California.

RESORT

Love Is Always in the Air Faena is a meditation on love in all its forms. Every detail in every space is infused with passion, care, and a deep appreciation for timeless beauty.

As Alan Faena writes in his latest book ‘Architecture of Being’: “Love is the juice of life, the flow of Creation. To find love, we must first have walked life. Love uplifts our Being to higher planes of existence, to the core of Creation. It draws us closer to our fullest realization.” At Faena, this devotion to love manifests itself in every fold of red velvet, every stroke of paint, the note of every song, the stitch of every fabric, and the warmth of every

12

smile. Love is the axis on which the Faena universe turns, bathing all in its orbit with an intangible essence they can feel. It’s in the art that stirs the heart, the skillful craft of dedicated chefs, the healing hands of spa therapists, the soulful rhythms of live music, and the scintillating performances in the theater. Faena is a place to celebrate love and the romance of life with those you hold dear, not just on one occasion in February, but every day of the year.

THE LIVING ROOM

Don’t Stop the Music Argentine DJ and producer Richie Hell is putting his spin on The Living Room’s music scene. “Miami is a thriving melting pot of artistic expressions,” he said. “To contribute to Faena’s ethos of cultivating a sense of community and cultural richness, we actively engage with the vibrant local music and art scene.” An avid record collector, Hell absorbs influences from every reach of the musical spectrum. As Faena’s new Music Director, he’ll be handpicking unique voices that enrich the property’s extensive array of talented local artists. The focus is to integrate cultural influences from the city into Faena’s music programming, which celebrates

14

the varied heritage and artistic expressions that define Miami. “By fostering these connections, Faena becomes a platform for local artists to shine, creating a symbiotic relationship that not only enhances our guest experience but also contributes to the cultural tapestry of the community we are a part of,” he explained. Music is an integral part of the overall artistic narrative at Faena, adding to its aesthetic richness. “Our approach involves careful collaboration with other art forms

within the space, such as visual art installations, architecture, and interior design,” said Hell. “The music is curated to complement these elements, ensuring a cohesive and immersive environment for our guests. Like the soundtrack of a film.” Every night of the week, The Living Room hosts live performances from a range of Miami-based talent including Mi Dulce Son, American Gypsy, Louis Amanti, The French Horn Collective, Robbie Ellias, and The Usual Suspects. It will also continue to feature talented local DJs as well as thematic nights including Vinyl Tuesdays. “Don’t miss our Saint Valentine’s Day theme party featuring live music and DJs!” In addition, The Living Room will welcome a late-night resident singer every month who

will act as the master of ceremonies for the room alongside special burlesque acts from local star, Elena Lee, and others. “In January, we had the incomparable New Yorkbased Kat Cunning who delighted us with their unique voice and energetic performance,” he noted. In February, Greek singer Kelly Kaltsi will bring her stylish blend of fifties glamour and cinematic music selection. From February 23rd to 25th, Paris-based avantgarde artist, Anna Kova, will host a three-night residency presenting her new album along with R&B classics. “Striking a balance between familiarity and innovation, our music programming reflects Faena’s commitment to artistic excellence, setting the stage for an unforgettable stay for our guests,” said Hell.

EL SECRETO OMAK ASE

Spring Secrets Erik Menedez, the innovative chef behind Paul Qui’s El Secreto Omakase, Faena’s six-seat speakeasy dining experience, shares his secrets of the season.

“Spring is my favorite because there is an abundance of in-season fruits and vegetables that will find their way onto the menu,” he explains. “One thing we do inhouse every spring is pickle young ginger from Fuji, Japan. Ginger is a springtime vegetable, so we pickle enough to last all year.” What are some other spring ingredients diners will find on the menu? In spring, we get a lot of exotic fruits like white strawberries, pineapples, and cuca melons (also known as mouse melons or mini cucumbers). Plus, ramps, which are spring onions (often referred to as wild leeks). The springtime also brings the prized morels, making them my personal favorite among the wild mushrooms in season.

What are some of El Secreto’s crowd favorites? That would have to be the Ora King Salmon Toro, which is the belly portion of the fish, that we torch then brush with an aged tamari soy sauce and top with a fermented chili crisp. Another fan favorite is our house-made ceviche with Japanese purple sweet potato and crunchy apple pumpkin seeds. We also get a lot of compliments on our sous vide king crab flavored with smoked brown butter and fresh yuzu juice. Where are you finding inspiration this season? I get a lot of inspiration from books. Some new releases in my arsenal are ‘Fish Butchery’ by Josh Niland, an Australian chef, and Noma had two books come out this year: ‘Noma 2.0’ and ‘Noma in Kyoto’. Noma is one of the best restaurants in

the world and only works with very seasonal ingredients, so I use those books quite often as a reference. Another book I look to frequently is ‘The Flavor Bible’. It has great suggestions for flavor combinations. Are you seeing any new trends in omakase? Amid a surge of new omakase restaurants, many of which import their fish from Japan and specialize in nigiri, El Secreto distinguishes itself through a unique approach. We step away from the usual omakase style, leaning more towards kaiseki cuisine—a Japanese culinary tradition that celebrates seasonal ingredients and thoughtfully composed dishes, both raw and cooked. Instead of a standard 15 to 16 courses of raw fish over rice, our menu showcases a broader range of elaborate and more creative dishes.

RETAIL

Miami Minimalism “This season we have really seen an even deeper shift into sleek minimalism styles but with a Miami twist,” said Jeffrey Lasota, co-founder of Curio at Faena Bazaar, a three-story experiential shopping boutique in the Faena District.

“Colors are simple: black, white, chocolate browns, earth tones,” Lasota added. “Also, silhouettes are simple, understated, and body conscious but in a very elevated, sophisticated way.” Curio recently added several brands that nail minimalist chic including WARDROBE.NYC and Eterne. “Both brands were started by stylists with a strong celebrity following and have been on the frontline of pushing this new version of what sexy is.” Other brands that embody this aesthetic include the L.A.-based brand, The Sei, and the Danish brand, Rohe. Curio also carries

18

Viktoria & Woods, a sustainable brand from Australia, which has a great stretch-mesh fabrication they use for comfortable corseted tops and bustier dresses. “This is also the season for elevating your wardrobe staples and upgrading your basics,” adds Danielle Licata, co-founder. In the expanded menswear collection on the first floor, Curio stocks the perfect white shirt from Martin Margiela and pants from Jil Sander. For the women, Licata recommends elevated shirtdress styles by either AEXAE or Anemos and a slinky maxi dress from Eterne. Curio also carries classic linen pieces

from Australian brand, Posse, a cult-favorite collection worn regularly by Meghan Markle and Sofia Richie. “The Michael Kors Collection is a perfect example of a brand known for their uber-luxury fabrics and styling in pieces that are timeless and elevate the rest of your closet,” said Lasota. Denim is always in, and Lasota is very excited about the newness in denim and how elevated the fabrication has become. “We have seamed jeans from EB Denim, high-waisted flare legs from ASKK, slashed jeans from Martin Margiela, and curved lasso-style jeans from B Sides,” he said. For

swimwear, check out Chanel-owned brand Eres imported from France, and Lisa Marie Fernandez, who uses super luxurious and highly novel fabrications but in classic après-swim styles that are perfect for beach to bar. Curio is also launching a very special edit of the Christian Louboutin collection. “Their iconic heels are a great investment piece for your closet,” noted Lasota. The selection includes great day-tonight rope-detail sandals, as well as more evening specialty styles that are ideal for a night out.

CASA FAENA

Finestra A Sud Artist Alessandro Florio, born in Taormina, Sicily, initially immersed himself in the artistic environment through the world of tattoos, a passion that deeply resonates with him. The connection between painting and tattooing lies in his need for the most intimate form of expression, allowing him to vividly convey his emotions.

“Every year we search for an artist who we believe to have the same spirit and ethos of GITANO: bohemian, free, open-minded and elegant,” said founder James Gardner. The search led him to Alessandro Florio, a Sicilian painter from the Italian town of Taormina, whose cobblestone streets and turquoise waters were made famous by the second season of White Lotus, an awardwinning Netflix series. “We were impressed by his lifestyle and his work, which we thought to be colossal, mythical, and moving,” explained Gardner. Florio is a professional tattoo artist turned painter known for a vivid style. His oil-on-canvas paintings weave motifs echoing his Sicilian roots to create a rich tapestry of color, form, and identity. “With his use of pinks and greens, tropical palms and animals, as well as Faena reds and gold, we immediately fell in love,” Gardner said. The evolution of Florio’s art can be traced back to a moment that occurred during a visit to the Louvre in Paris. Witnessing collections painted by the old masters inspired him to move beyond the small-scale tattoos to broader canvases that express his deep respect for nature, while drawing on inspiration from Oriental art. During Miami Art Week, Florio was invited to paint an artwork live in Casa Faena’s atrium. Five of his artworks are still on display in Casa Faena as well as GITANO’s Jungle Rooftop Bar, where Miami who’s who sip signature mezcal cocktails under sunset skies. “It’s the perfect addition to our ambiance,” said Gardner.

FAENA CULTURE

The Faena Questionnaire: Paul Qui Our rendition of the Proust Questionnaire is our unique take on the famous parlor game that gained popularity, although it was not originally created, by Marcel Proust, the renowned French essayist and novelist. Proust held the belief that by responding to these questions, individuals unveil their genuine essence.

Pao boldly introduces a fresh interpretation of modern Asian cuisine, drawing inspiration from a diverse array of international styles such as Filipino, Spanish, Japanese, and French. Nestled against stunning ocean views, this culinary haven, led by the James Beard Award-winning chef Paul Qui, goes beyond expectations with its exclusive speakeasy-style Omakase experience called El Secreto.

20

Within this clandestine space, a fusion of Tokyo-style sushi and Kyoto-style kaiseki creates an unparalleled tasting menu, guiding guests through a mouthwatering culinary journey. Paul Qui’s rise to culinary stardom began with a victory on Top Chef, followed by a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest. Revered Top Chef judge Tom Colicchio once hailed Qui as the most talented chef in the

show’s history. Today, Qui stands as one of North America’s most formidable young talents, with critically acclaimed restaurants and a fleet of Asian-inspired food trucks in Austin, Texas. Hailing from Manila, Philippines, and equipped with training in classic French and Japanese cuisine, Qui employs a modernist approach to food that is both playful and authentic. His culinary mastery lies in seamlessly

marrying classical techniques with local flavors, drawing inspiration from Filipino, Japanese, Spanish, and French culinary traditions. Qui’s philosophy centers around food as a conduit for memories, familiarity, and comfort, avoiding confinement to a singular cuisine type. Instead, he seeks definition through the experiences of his guests, who consistently shower his creations with rave reviews.
