A charity challenge and a glimpse into diplomacy – the British Embassy in Bahrain is opening its doors and creating awareness with two exciting opportunities.
It’s going to be an interesting month at the British Embassy in Bahrain, as it gears up to host two initiatives this April, offering a chance to support an important cause and gain insight into the world of diplomacy.
On April 5, the British Embassy, Bahrain International Circuit and Bahrain Olympic Committee are teaming up for the One Lap Challenge. Walk, run or scooter around (for the little ones) the island’s iconic F1 track to raise funds for Race Against Dementia, a charity founded by former F1 champion, Sir Jackie Stewart.
Gates open at 8.15am, with the Japanese Grand Prix qualifying being shown on giant screens at 9am before the main event kicks off at 10.15am, running until 11.40am. This special family-friendly event is open to all ages, with entry priced at BD5 for adults and BD2 for children up to 13 years. Water will be provided and food trucks will be available before and after the event.
In the interest of safety, only self-propelled scooters are allowed. Bicycles and anything with electric or motor propulsion are not permitted.
Whether you’re a motorsport fan or just looking for a fun way to stay active, this is a great chance to be part of something meaningful.
Visit teambahrain.bh/race-against-dementia to buy tickets and register for the One Lap Challenge.
The British Embassy is also running a competition to give young women in Bahrain the chance to step into the shoes of a diplomat and be an ambassador for the day with the British Ambassador to Bahrain, H.E. Alastair Long. Open to young females aged 16 to 25, interested candidates should submit a voice note or a video sharing their thoughts by answering the question: "If you’re an ambassador for a day, what do you think world leaders’ priorities should be in 2025 to promote economic growth?" Entries can be in either Arabic or English but must be filmed in landscape mode and should be no more than two minutes long.
This is a rare opportunity to step behind embassy doors and experience diplomacy firsthand. To submit your entry, email britishembassyinbahrain@gmail.com by April 10. ✤

Art and film lovers are in for a treat as La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art brings two cultural events for all to enjoy this month.
A hub for exquisite art and cultural events, La Fontaine, will be hosting two evenings this April, presenting a unique art exhibition and a movie night.
Step into the world of Iris Morata, where texture, light and memory intertwine. The exhibition titled A Thousand Fragments showcases Iris’ distinctive approach to art, using wood’s natural imperfections to explore life’s complexities. Each piece invites the viewer to shift perspective, revealing hidden depth and emotion over time.
The exhibit opens on April 11 at 6pm. Entrance is free upon reservation and includes soft drinks. An optional dinner with fixed menu, priced at BD22++, will also be hosted at 8pm. From April 12 until July 31, the exhibit is open and free to the public for viewing from Tuesday to Sunday, 4pm to 6pm. Read an exclusive interview with the artist in our Arts & Culture feature.
For film enthusiasts, La Fontaine will also be hosting a movie night with a difference on April 15. Enjoy a delicious dinner and the screening of an award-winning documentary by Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi, 5 Broken Cameras. This deeply personal film captures the power of resilience through the lens of a Palestinian villager, Emad,
documenting life in the West Bank. When he welcomes the birth of his fourth son, Gibreel, he also gets his first camera. As construction begins on a separation barrier in his village of Bil'in, the community rises in protest. Over the next five years, Emad documents both the resistance – led by two of his closest friends – and his son's early years. The conflict soon reaches his own family, with nightly raids and arrests becoming routine. Emad, his brothers and his friends face violence and imprisonment, while his cameras are often shot at or broken one after the other. Each of the five cameras tells a different part of his story. Amongst other accolades, 5 Broken Cameras won the first-ever Palestinian International Emmy Award for Best Documentary.
Tickets for the dinner and movie night are priced at BD11.6 and doors open at 6pm, with the film starting at 8pm. ✤

Are you ready for one of the biggest spectacles on the island’s calendar? The countdown is on for the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2025, set to take place from April 11 to 13 at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC).
Having commemorated two decades of racing last year, the F1 Bahrain Grand Prix is set to bring more thrilling action in 2025. As the fourth round of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship, this year’s race is a significant one, celebrating the 75th anniversary of both Formula 1 and the Kingdom’s national carrier and Grand Prix title partner, Gulf Air.
Bahrain’s race weekend will once again be a night spectacle under the floodlights, featuring this year’s campaign theme – The Desert Never Sleeps – reflecting on how the event truly comes to life at night. The 57-lap race promises high-speed action as the world’s best drivers take on the 5.412km circuit in Sakhir. This season brings a fresh dynamic to the grid with several major driver moves, including Lewis Hamilton’s much-anticipated switch to Ferrari, Carlos Sainz Jr joining Williams, Esteban Ocon heading to Haas and Nico Hülkenberg at Kick Sauber. Six rookies are also making their full-time debuts, including Kimi Antonelli with Mercedes, Liam Lawson with Red Bull Racing (now with Racing Bulls), Jack Doohan with Alpine, Oliver Bearman with Haas, Isack Hadjar with Racing Bulls and Gabriel Bortoleto with Kick Sauber. Alongside the main event, an action-packed support race programme ensures there’s plenty of wheel-to-wheel action throughout the weekend. The FIA Formula 2 Championship (F2) and FIA Formula 3 Championship (F3) return as the primary feeder series, giving fans a glimpse of future F1 stars in action. Both series held their opening rounds in Australia and will continue their campaigns in Bahrain, with two races eachSprint Races on Saturday and Feature Races on Sunday. F2, in
particular, has been a proven pathway to F1, with drivers like Charles Leclerc, George Russell and Lando Norris having made their way through the series.
The Porsche Carrera Cup Middle East (PCCME) will also add to the racing excitement. This one-make series, featuring the powerful Porsche 992 GT3 Cup cars, has become a staple of the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend. Now in its 16th season, the championship has already seen rounds in Qatar, Dubai and Abu Dhabi and will reach its penultimate round in Sakhir before heading to Jeddah.
Fans attending the race can expect packed grandstands, with ticket sales tracking towards another record-breaking crowd. Last year’s event saw 37,000 spectators on race day alone and 100,000 over the weekend.

Whether you’re a newbie or a pro, it all starts with the basics. Here’s your ultimate guide to understanding the sport and speaking the F1 lingo with confidence.
The highest level of single-seater racing, Formula 1 debuted in 1950, with Silverstone hosting the opening race. This adrenaline fuelled motorsport showcases the world’s elite drivers pushing sophisticated high-tech machines to their limits. The Grand Prix races are held worldwide with drivers racing wheel to wheel vying for the Drivers’ Championship and teams fighting for the Constructors’ Championship.
The F1 grid features 10 teams, each with two drivers, making up a total of 20 competitors. Some legendary drivers that have graced the F1 Hall of Fame include Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna, Jackie Stewart and Michael Schumacher, while more recent multiple champions, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Max Verstappen continue to fly the flag for the sport.
Each calendar season features 24 races on stunning circuits across five continents. Some of the most iconic tracks such as Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps and Suzuka remain fan favourites, while newer additions like Las Vegas and Miami bring fresh and thrilling challenges to the sport. Classic tracks like Monaco and Monza, have been part of F1 since the very first season and are deeply embedded in the sport’s history.
An F1 weekend takes place over three days. Friday is dedicated to two practice sessions, giving teams time to fine-tune their cars. Saturday features a final practice session before Qualifying, a knockout format that decides the starting grid. Sunday is race day, where drivers battle for points, podium finishes and victory in the Grand Prix.
Points are awarded to the top 10 finishers in each Grand Prix. Most races last between 90 minutes and two hours, covering just over 305km. Monaco is the exception, running at 260km due to its tight layout. Safety cars and red flags can extend the duration.
Relatively new to F1, the Sprint was introduced in 2021 to spice up the action. Only six strategically chosen circuits host the Sprint – a shorter 100km race that lasts about 30 minutes. A flatout action-packed event, it’s a dynamic race from start to finish with no mandatory pit stops and great overtaking potential. The Sprint weekend replaces two practice sessions – Friday sees the Sprint Qualifying session and the actual Sprint is held on Saturday. Points are offered from eight down to one (first place scores eight points and eighth place scores one) for the first eight cars to finish.
F1 cars are complex machines built from thousands of parts, including intricate bodywork, suspension elements, 18-inch tyres and eight-speed paddle shift gearboxes. Acting like an upside-down aircraft, their wings push them down onto the track, giving them incredible levels of grip.
Current regulations are based around aerodynamic ‘ground effects’ with tunnels beneath the floor generating extra downforce, while streamlined bodywork reduces disrupted airflow, allowing cars to follow more closely. This results in better racing, more overtaking opportunities and a more competitive spectacle.
F1 cars use turbocharged V6 hybrid engines with energy recovery systems. They currently run on E10 fuel (10% renewable ethanol), with plans for fully sustainable fuel in 2026.
With constant innovation, F1 cars continue to evolve to push the limits of motorsport performance.✤
Since its debut in 2004, the Bahrain Grand Prix has been a standout event on the Formula 1 calendar, giving us some of the most talked-about moments in F1 history. Here’s a look at what makes this race and circuit unique.
1. The First in the Middle East
In 2004, Bahrain became the first country in the Middle East to host a Formula 1 race. The inaugural Bahrain Grand Prix helped put the region on the motorsport map, paving the way for Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia and Qatar to join the F1 calendar.
2. Multiple Layouts
BIC has five FIA-certified track layouts, more than any other circuit in the world. This allows it to host a variety of motorsport events, from Formula 1 to endurance racing. The 5.412km Grand Prix Track stages Bahrain’s annual F1 race and regularly hosts other international series.
3. Switch to Night Racing
To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the 2014 Bahrain Grand Prix was held as a night event, making it only the second night race after Singapore. The flood-lit desert track not only created a stunning spectacle but also improved conditions for the drivers, with cooler evening temperatures allowing for better tyre management and closer racing.
4. The Longest Lap in F1
For the 2010 Bahrain Grand Prix, organisers opted for the ‘Endurance Circuit’ layout, extending the track to 6.299km –the longest lap ever used in an F1 race. However, after a mixed reaction from drivers and fans, the standard 5.412km layout was reinstated the following year.
5. Anti-Sand Solution
Despite being located in the Sakhir desert, the circuit remains relatively sand-free thanks to a special adhesive sprayed around the track to keep sand from blowing onto the asphalt.
6. Hamilton’s Record Wins
Lewis Hamilton holds the record for the most wins in Bahrain, with multiple victories over the years. Meanwhile, Ferrari remains the most successful constructor at the circuit, with several wins in different eras.
7. Back-to-Back Racing
In 2020, Bahrain played an important role in keeping the F1 season running during the pandemic by hosting two back-toback races – the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Sakhir Grand Prix. The latter, run on BIC’s shorter ‘Outer Circuit’, became famous for George Russell’s near-win when he stood in for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.
8. Grosjean’s Miracle Escape
The 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix also produced one of the most dramatic moments in F1 history, when Romain Grosjean’s horrific crash saw his Haas split in half and burst into flames. Miraculously, he escaped with minor injuries, a testament to F1’s vastly improved safety measures. ✤
FACT spent a day with the new Jeep Wrangler, a stylish and versatile off-road SUV, ready to take on any terrain.
Producing iconic 4x4 commercial vehicles since the late 1940s, Jeep is renowned for being the authentic SUV brand whose cars deliver legendary off-road capability, interior refinement, high-tech features and versatility to lucky owners worldwide.
This month, FACT was invited by Behbehani Brothers to test drive the new Jeep Wrangler, a vehicle that is carving out a legacy of its own.
Having tried several Jeep models in recent years, including the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Sahara, the 2022 Grand Jeep Cherokee L and the 2023 Grand Wagoneer, we were excited to see what the 2025 Jeep Wrangler Sport S model had to offer.
As soon as the immediately recognisable figure of the midsized, four-door, off-road SUV came into view, we began to spot updates to the sculpted design. Although a few changes have been made to the flanks (such as the new wheel design) and the rear, the most noticeable changes can be seen upfront.
Amongst the traditional Jeep design cues, the 2025 Wrangler Sport’s classic seven-slot grille has been enhanced with black textured vertical slots – now slimmer and designed to improve cooling – along with neutral grey metallic bezels and bodycoloured surround.
A new trail-ready stealth antenna has been integrated into the front windshield, replacing the previous steel mast version. This feature streamlines the vehicle’s appearance, eliminating brush or tree limb snags when off-road adventuring.
A black, three-piece hardtop endows the 2025 model with an even tougher-looking exterior, while LED front, rear and fog lamps ensure the best visibility in all conditions.
To protect critical car components while on the trail, including the fuel tank, transfer case and automatic transmission oil pan, the artisans at Jeep have also equipped the SUV with four ruggedlooking skid plates.
Shifting our attention to the inside, we were met by a polished interior loaded with premium features and in-car tech.
Our first focal point was the traditional centre stack, featuring a clean, sculpted form that complemented the horizontal dashboard design. The wrapped instrument panel has new softtouch surfaces and contrast stitching, adding a touch of class to an already impressive interior. We also spotted new AMPS (Attachment Mounting Pattern Standard) bracket provisions on top of the dash.
Even more impressive was the all-new 12.3-inch touchscreen sitting prominently atop the centre stack, just above the new slim rectangular inboard air vent. This is the most advanced and largest display ever offered in a Wrangler, housing the fifthgeneration award-winning Uconnect 5 system.
We soon discovered that Uconnect 5 delivers operating speeds that are five times faster compared to the previous generation. Using an Android operating system and over-the-air (OTA) updates ensures flexibility, allowing for constant evolution. This means continuous new content, features and services.
This system is also compatible with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, featuring a fully customisable home screen with one-touch operation. It even provides simultaneous connectivity for two Bluetooth-enabled phones.
As everyone knows, Jeep is king when it comes to off-road adventuring. This mantle has been earned through decades of delivering outstanding 4x4 performance. The new Wrangler certainly lives up to the reputation.
Powering the 2025 model is a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline fourcylinder engine equipped with engine stop-start (ESS). This brawny motor delivers 270hp and 400Nm of torque, while seamlessly integrating with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission. Setting off along the roads, we enjoyed the real sense of power behind the accelerator pedal, relishing the responsiveness of the vehicle.
Once we steered the SUV onto the rough, it really began to show off its superior capabilities. No matter where we directed the Wrangler, it effortlessly ate up the terrain. Directing the 4x4 over thick sand or rocky areas, we always felt completely confident in the vehicle’s capabilities and had to smile at how easily it negotiated such challenging ground.
With the turbo strategically mounted directly to the cylinder head for enhanced durability and a dedicated cooling circuit effectively regulating the air intake temperature, throttle body and turbocharger, the 2.0-litre L-4 engine is a testament to Jeep’s continuous innovation.
Safety was paramount when developing the new 2025 Jeep Wrangler, which offers more than 85 available active and passive safety and security features.
Standard on all models for 2025 are first- and second-row side curtain airbags, along with driver and passenger front airbags and front seat-mounted driver and passenger side airbags. Additionally, the 2025 model marks an upgrade to the safety specifications by including Automatic Emergency Braking, further enhancing the Wrangler’s commitment to driver and passenger protection.
The wrapped instrument panel has new softtouch surfaces and contrast stitching, adding a touch of class to an already impressive interior.
The new model also features second-row outboard seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters, as well as structural improvements for side-impact performance. The standard ADAS (advanced driver’s assistance system) includes forward collision warning and advanced cruise control with stop and blind spot detection with rear cross-path. ParkSense front and rear park-assist system, ParkView rear backup camera with dynamic grid lines, traction control and electronic stability control (ESC) with electronic roll mitigation are all equipped as standard on the new Wrangler.
The new Jeep Wrangler is a testament to the brand’s unwavering mission to top the off-road SUV segment. ✤

Thank you! I’m thrilled to take on this exciting opportunity, overseeing luxury and lifestyle properties across Bahrain, Qatar and Oman. My day-to-day operations focus on engaging, inspiring and empowering our hotel leaders to drive continuous improvement and consistently deliver exceptional experiences for our guests, owners and colleagues.
A key part of my role is overseeing revenue management strategies, optimising operational efficiency and ensuring that our brand’s luxury standards are upheld. I closely monitor key performance indicators, analyse guest feedback and implement service enhancements that elevate the guest experience. Additionally, I prioritise building trusted relationships with owners, fostering open and transparent conversations to align their priorities with IHG’s strategic vision. Collaboration is at the heart of what I do – I work closely with hotel general managers to drive initiatives in sustainability, digital transformation and talent development. Cultivating a culture of inclusivity and continuous learning is essential, ensuring that our teams remain motivated, well-trained and aligned with our long-term goals. Ultimately, my mission is to create extraordinary experiences for our guests while positioning our properties as market leaders in the region.
You’re known for your people-oriented leadership approach. What do you believe is the key to building strong, highperforming teams?
I firmly believe that the strength of any successful organisation lies in its people. High-performing teams are built on discipline, persistence and a diverse blend of skills, all coming together to drive collective success. The key to fostering such teams is creating a culture of collaboration, empowerment and mutual respect, where open communication, trust and professional development are at the core. I encourage a mindset where constructive conflict, rooted in good intentions, leads to better ideas and stronger outcomes. As Henry Ford said: "Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress and working together is success." Your commitment to talent development and diversity earned you the 2022 IMEA Talent Impact Award. What achievements are you most proud of in this regard?
Receiving the IMEA Talent Impact Award was a proud moment, as it reflects my commitment to creating opportunities for talent growth and diversity. One of my key achievements has been increasing workforce diversity at InterContinental Bahrain, where we now represent nearly 30 nationalities – an 8% increase since
2021. I am also particularly proud of our partnership with Evolvin’ Women, providing job opportunities to unemployed women from African countries, making us one of the first IHG hotels to do so. Additionally, our collaboration with the Ministry of Labour has led to a 68% increase in Bahraini employees, reinforcing our dedication to localisation and talent development. This year, we are expanding our inclusivity efforts by partnering with local organisations to create employment opportunities for individuals with special needs, further strengthening our commitment to a diverse and inclusive workforce. Additionally, we are collaborating with Bahrain Polytechnic University to offer an apprentice programme for Bahraini students, allowing them to gain hands-on experience in the hospitality industry while continuing their studies. By investing in the next generation of talent, we aim to nurture future hospitality leaders and equip them with the skills needed for long-term success.
One of your initiatives is to promote arts and culture at InterContinental Bahrain, such as the Glow of Nostalgia exhibition for Ramadan. What do you hope guests will take away from this event?
Art and culture play a vital role in creating meaningful connections and immersive experiences for our guests. With the Glow of Nostalgia exhibition, we aim to celebrate heritage and tradition through art, providing visitors with a unique opportunity
to engage with cultural expressions in a luxurious setting. Beyond creating a memorable experience, this initiative also serves as a platform to support local artists and businesses, giving them the opportunity to showcase their work to a diverse audience.
We extend our gratitude to artists Mohammed Bu Hasan and Mahdi Al Manai for their invaluable contributions in curating an immersive experience that revives cherished memories. Through a blend of fine art photography and bronze sculpture, they beautifully narrate the story of Bahrain’s timeless traditions.

You are passionate about boxing and K9 training. Do these hobbies influence your leadership approach in any way?
Absolutely! Both boxing and K9 training shape my leadership approach in meaningful ways. Boxing instils discipline, strategic thinking and the ability to stay composed under pressure – essential traits for making quick, effective decisions. K9 training, on the other hand, reinforces patience, consistency and trust, which are fundamental to building strong, motivated teams. These hobbies reinforce my leadership philosophy: success comes from continuous learning, adaptability and a strong team dynamic. ✤
With two years at the helm, the General Manager of Downtown Rotana has steered his team and the property to new heights. He talks about his approach to management, the best career advice he’s received and upcoming dining promotions.
From banquet manager to general manager, you've had an impressive upward trajectory in your career. What do you think has been the biggest factor in your success?
I believe my success can be attributed to a combination of hard work, dedication and consistency. Over the years, I’ve honed my ability to adapt and lead by not just adjusting to situations but actively shaping environments where teams can thrive. My experiences across different countries and cultures have significantly contributed to this adaptability, enabling me to approach challenges from a global perspective. Each role has
brought its own set of milestones – whether it was orchestrating the largest hotel event, surpassing revenue targets, overseeing hotel openings or leading rebranding efforts. A pivotal moment for me was at Downtown Rotana, where the vision and drive I brought to the team led us to achieve our best performance ever in 2024. We reached the highest market share, record food and beverage (F&B) revenue, as well as top ratings in guest satisfaction and employee engagement. These achievements reflect not just my journey, but the collective success of the teams I’ve had the privilege of leading.
It's been a little over two years since you took the reins of Downtown Rotana. What have been the standout moments and what’s in the pipeline for the next quarter?
Leading Downtown Rotana over the past two years has been an exciting journey marked by a series of successes. One of my first priorities was building a dynamic team – one that was not only ready to compete but also committed to delivering exceptional service. We've introduced a variety of exciting activations, such as the Village Brunch, Le Petit Chef in Teatro and the Downtown Culture Hub, which supports the local artist community. Additionally, we've launched unique events like Oktoberfest, high-profile gala dinners and even a vegan promotion.
For the upcoming quarter, we've recently launched our Dine for Diamond campaign in collaboration with Malabar Jewellery. This exclusive promotion offers our guests the chance to win a stunning diamond set, with the raffle draw taking place in midMay. It’s a unique opportunity for our guests to enjoy a memorable dining experience and potentially walk away with a beautiful prize.
You started your career in F&B. Do you miss those days and how has that experience shaped your leadership style?
F&B has always been a true passion of mine and I’m fortunate that Downtown Rotana has fantastic outlets that allow me to stay connected to that side of the business. What I find most fulfilling now is watching my team grow and develop through the guidance I provide.
My experience in managing large-scale F&B operations has been invaluable in shaping my leadership approach. I’ve had the opportunity to oversee teams as large as 500, three times the size of our team here at Downtown Rotana. Leading such large teams taught me that every decision I make has farreaching consequences, which instilled in me a deep sense of
responsibility. It’s essential not only to make the right decisions but also to communicate them clearly and directly. Managing high-pressure situations is a daily part of F&B leadership and that experience has been incredibly beneficial in transitioning to the role of general manager. It’s taught me to remain composed under pressure, prioritise effectively and lead with confidence, all critical qualities that I continue to rely on in my current role.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received and from whom?
An invaluable lesson I've learnt is the importance of transparency and accountability. While I can’t point to a single leader who explicitly gave me this advice, I’ve been fortunate to witness these qualities in many of my mentors throughout my career. Their example taught me that being open, honest and taking responsibility are essential traits for anyone who aspires to be a great leader. It’s a lesson I carry with me every day and one I strive to model for my teams.
Another piece of career advice I’ve received is to be patient. I’ll admit, it’s something I often struggle to fully embrace myself, but I remind myself of it daily. Patience, especially in leadership, is key to making thoughtful decisions and allowing time for growth and results.
Can you share a fun fact about yourself that most people might not know?
While I pride myself on being transparent, there is one fun fact that reflects the international nature of my family. Over the years, my wife and I have lived in several different countries, each one adding to our unique story. We met in Qatar, got married in Bahrain, welcomed our daughter in Abu Dhabi, our son in Jordan, and even had our first dog in Morocco and the second in Bahrain. Let’s see who will be added to the family with our next move. ✤
Manager, NAD Group Holdings
What inspired you to pursue a career in marketing?
My inspiration for a career in marketing stems from the dynamic nature of the field. I am drawn to the ability to forge meaningful connections with diverse audiences and engage in a variety of tasks that keep each day fresh and exciting. The challenges I face daily fuel my passion and I find immense satisfaction in witnessing the tangible progress that results from my efforts. Marketing not only allows me to grow personally and professionally but also gives me the opportunity to contribute to the success of the brands I work with.
How many brands do you manage with NAD and what is the most enjoyable part of your job?
I currently manage up to 13 brands in collaboration with NAD. The most rewarding aspect of my role is the deep engagement I have with each brand, as they each present unique challenges and creative opportunities. Whether I’m strategising for social media campaigns, organising events or exploring collaborative initiatives, I enjoy the variety that comes with each task. Achieving success in marketing requires unwavering commitment and enthusiasm and I find great joy in the journey of driving results for each brand I represent.
What's your go-to activity to unwind after a busy week?
As a mother of three, I deeply value the time I spend with my family. Whether it’s sharing a delightful dinner, enjoying a movie night or simply discussing our day, these moments are precious to me. I also prioritise personal time to recharge, whether it’s diving into a good book, catching up on my favourite shows or taking a peaceful walk to clear my mind. Striking a balance between family activities and self-care is essential for me, helping me recharge and prepare for the week ahead.
From growing up in an artistic environment to working in Michelin-starred kitchens, Abdelhameed Al Mahsiri, the Executive Chef of Areen Hospitality, shares his culinary experiences and the one dish he could eat forever!
Coming from a family of artists, how has that creative environment influenced your approach to cooking?
Growing up surrounded by my mum and other family members expressing themselves through various art forms deeply influenced my approach to cooking. It taught me to see food as more than just sustenance – it’s a canvas. Their creativity made me more intentional about presentation, guiding me to explore colour theory, contrast and composition in my dishes. Every plate I create is not just about flavour but also about evoking emotion, I also came to understand how memories are very important in shaping our experiences with food habits on a daily basis.
As I travelled and explored different cultures, I started to draw deeper connections between the art I had grown up with and the culinary world I was immersing myself in. I realised that the same principles that make a painting or a sculpture captivating – balance, contrast, composition and harmony – also apply in the kitchen.
You’ve trained under some of the world’s most renowned chefs in Michelin-starred kitchens. What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve taken from that experience?
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learnt from training under Michelin-starred chefs is resilience – never taking things personally and developing a thick skin. The kitchen is an intense, high-pressure environment and the more you argue, the harder it becomes. The chef in charge is always right in the moment and your best approach is to listen more than you speak, absorb knowledge and adapt quickly.
Flexibility is key – being willing to move around and learn every station sharpens your skills and makes you indispensable. Beyond technical expertise, I’ve come to appreciate that soft skills and emotional intelligence are just as crucial. Success in the kitchen isn’t just about technique; it’s about discipline, composure and the ability to work as part of a team under immense pressure.
If you could only eat one dish for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
That would be tuna pasta. This dish has been a constant in my life, especially after long, hectic days in the restaurant when I barely had time to eat, it became my go-to comfort meal – simple yet satisfying. I’d take a moment to prepare my preferred vegetables, open a can of tuna and black olives and finish it off with a lemonolive oil dressing. Quick to prepare and easy to digest.
Beyond its convenience, tuna pasta also holds sentimental value. It reminds me of my father, a bodybuilder, who always told me it was the perfect meal for building muscle and staying fit. His words stuck with me, especially since physical strength and endurance are essential in the kitchen. For me, this dish is more than just food – it’s fuel, comfort and a reminder of resilience.
Your culinary style blends tradition with innovation. Which signature dish at Charthouse Bahrain best represents this philosophy?
One of my signature dishes that truly embodies my philosophy is the Seared Wild-Caught Salmon with Seasonal Assorted Vegetable Mosaic and Koji Butter Beurre Blanc. This dish brings together the best of both worlds – classic techniques with bold, global flavours.
The salmon is carefully seared to perfection, allowing its natural richness to shine, while the vegetables, arranged in a striking mosaic, showcase the beauty of seasonal produce. The use of Berbere spice rub adds a warm, aromatic depth rooted in East African tradition, while the koji butter beurre blanc introduces a subtle umami complexity, inspired by the art of Japanese fermentation.
This dish is a perfect representation of my approach to cooking – respecting time-honoured traditions while pushing boundaries with innovative elements that elevate the dining experience. ✤
Japanese culinary artistry was on the cards for Fernanda Langhammer, as she embarked on a gastronomic journey of fine ingredients and exceptional flavours at Sato.
Washoku literally means food of Japan, more specifically, a collective way of referring to traditional Japanese cuisine. The culinary spread has been registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, which is a practice, representation, expression, knowledge or skill considered by UNESCO to be part of a place's cultural heritage. Sato at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa honours this legacy with dishes representing authenticity and a touch of heart and soul. The place underwent renovation last year but the corridor leading to the restaurant still ends with the circular aquarium, a symbol of the eatery and a nice way of welcoming guests. Talking of feeling greeted, as soon as you enter the venue, a gong is banged to announce your arrival.
The space is ample with small accents of décor, maintaining the minimalist aspect of the Japanese culture. There are semi-private dining rooms, spaces dedicated to a teppanyaki experience and a cosy lounge. The ambience is lively and, during our visit, a few tables were enjoying their meals in happy conversation.
The kitchen is orchestrated by Chef Kevin, who goes to Japan every year for at least a month to sharpen his skills and find new inspirations for his menu. We had a great chat with him and learnt more about his journey into the culinary world, which started as a job and became his passion – a dedication that we see in each of his creations.
Our culinary journey started with a crowd-pleaser, Ika Karaage, deep-fried calamari with a spicy and crunchy crust. It was super tender, with a light flavour and nice kick – we devoured it in minutes. The next dish was the Negima Yaki, sliced beef rolls filled with carrots and blanched spinach; it looked like meat sushi with a succulent texture and a hint of sweetness, perfect if you are looking for a nice bite-sized finger food.
As enthusiasts of raw fish, we were delighted with a selection of dishes under the Sashimi section of the menu. The Hotate Ceviche is made with Hokkaido scallops, native to the Pacific Ocean. This type of scallop is sushi grade, and thanks to its fresh quality and harvest methods, it has a creamier and sweeter characteristic. Prepared with a yuzu dressing, caviar and microgreens, it melted in the mouth. When popped 0n the tongue, the funky yuzu balls that topped it gave a little punch to our taste buds. The Akami Ceviche followed and it was prepared with thin slices of Bluefin tuna, radish and cucumber dressing. The secret in this dish was the perfect amount of chilli oil to add a touch of heat to the fantastic texture of the high-quality fish. The o-toro is a special part of the bluefin belly, one of the most desirable cuts as it is the fattiest part of the fish and practically melts in your mouth, leaving a sweet taste. Because of its rich and highly sought-after nature, o-toro can be more expensive than other parts. It's really a delicacy to try at least once in a lifetime. The last of the sashimis and everyone's favourite was the Hamachi Truffle Yuzu; our party has a thing or two for truffle flavours and the combination of thinly sliced yellowtail with truffle yuzu dressing was incredible and well-balanced. The warm dishes arrived and we started with Yaki Udon Matawa Yaki Soba. Udon is a thick noodle made with wheat flour with a chewy yet silky characteristic that makes it easy to slurp right up.
Because these noodles don’t have a specific flavour, they absorbed the chicken and prawn juices and chef's special sauce and had a beautiful brown colour – a comforting dish for a cold day.
But you are wrong if you think Japanese recipes are only made of seafood. Good quality meat is also a speciality. The Grilled Beef Tare Moto was a US Prime A7 tenderloin marinated in sweet soy sauce, nicely charred on the outside and so soft that it could be cut with a butter knife. The meat melted on the tongue and had a light taste. On the other hand, the Rib Steak Sukiyaki had a different texture. It was rarer, presented more fat and had a deeper flavour. They were both served with vegetables and had their own piquancy, translating the high quality of the cuts beautifully.
The meal was accompanied by a trio of mocktails, a Piña Colada with raspberry, an Orange Mojito with passion fruit and a concoction of lychee and cherry; they added a sweet tone throughout the meal to balance the acidity and savoury notes of our spread. Still on the subject of sugars, the desserts were simple with a twist. The Matcha Cheesecake was smooth with a subtle green tea hint that we all loved. However, my favourite was the Banana Harumaki, the Japanese version of an egg roll that at Sato is super crispy and made with peanut butter, cinnamon glaze, milk powder and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The contrast of hot and cold with creamy banana in the centre with a touch of peanut butter was the best way to conclude this spectacular feast. I really appreciate Chef Kevin and his team's respect for the outstanding ingredients available in the Sato kitchen. They prepare them with care and display them in their best versions, which we were lucky to enjoy, and you can be next! ✤

Offering a true taste of Italy, Osteria Papà impresses with delicious dishes made from the freshest ingredients, as Bushra Hakim discovered on a recent visit to the eatery.
They say a restaurant is only as good as the passion behind it. At Osteria Papà, that passion arrives plated, garnished and served with a smile. The brainchild of the island’s cherished culinary duo, Chefs Steeven Gilles and Paul Gardin have made sure this gem feels like home through and through. The charming sage-green exterior is impossible to miss and with ample private parking, the experience begins even before you step inside. The interiors are bright and pleasing, with a handmade pizza oven taking centre stage, surrounded by striking green tiles. The warm, Mediterranean-inspired aesthetic continues throughout, with white, curved walls and deep-set windows creating a soft, cosy glow. Natural touches like woven rattan lamps, dark earthenware bowls and wooden candle holders add character, and the lush greenery makes the space inviting. The terrace area is perfect for al fresco dining, while the rooftop garden, packed with tomato plants, basil, oregano and more, provides the freshest ingredients for every dish.
Chef Steeven welcomed us with a big smile and got us settled in before we embarked on the highlight of the visit – the food! Both chefs are incredibly hands-on, cultivating an atmosphere that feels less like dining out and more like being hosted by old friends. We kicked off with the Piatto della Squadra, and what a magnifico start it was. This vibrant starter platter featured freshly baked flatbread served with luscious truffle stracciatella and the true showstopper – halal cold cuts flown directly from Northern
(yes, you read that right)! Beef Milano, Beef
Spicy Pancetta and Veal Ham, all sourced from Italy, made for a rare and delightful experience. The warm, pillowy bread paired with the creamy truffle stracciatella and the savoury melt-in-yourmouth cold cuts was nothing short of perfetto
Next up was the Tomato Burrata, a dish that celebrated simplicity and freshness. Garden-fresh tomatoes were grated and paired with creamy burrata from Apulia, then elevated with roasted garlic, shallots and basil. The light spice of the tomatoes contrasted beautifully with the burrata’s richness, creating a perfectly balanced appetiser. The Truffle Salad followed, offering an exciting medley of textures. Frisée provided crunch, while wild rocket added a peppery bite. A mascarpone dressing brought creaminess and puffed rice lent an unexpected yet delightful crispness. The sun-dried tomatoes delivered a tangy punch, tying everything together seamlessly, making it light and moreish. Rounding off the starters were the Sautéed Shrimps, served atop marinara sauce infused with hints of chilli and fried garlic – a dish that had umami, savoury and spice and managed to hit all the right notes.
With appetites whetted, it was time for the mains. The Ravioli al Limone was the first to arrive, featuring delicate parcels of house-made egg dough stuffed with artichoke and topped with pine nuts and parmesan, all bathed in a luscious lemon-infused sauce. Even a self-proclaimed veggie sceptic like me couldn’t resist. The Spaghetti al Pesto di Pistacchio followed, made with
semolina dough this time and a unique pesto crafted from pistachios instead of pine nuts. Tossed with basil butter and parmesan, it was hearty, comforting and undeniably satisfying. Then came the pizzas – feather-light, fluffy creations made with dough that had been fermented for 72 hours. So light, in fact, that one could easily devour an entire pizza solo. Exercising restraint, I limited myself to a slice of each to avoid succumbing to a food coma.
The Spicy Nduja pizza was outstanding. The fiery beef nduja sausage, imported from Italy, is perfectly paired with San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte, caramelised onions, mascarpone cream and parmesan. The combination of spices from the sausage and sweetness from the onions, along with the velvety cheese blend, was phenomenal and unlike anything I’d tasted before. The Escargot pizza was equally intriguing. It’s not something you often find on the island, but the chefs’ French heritage shone through with this clever addition. Mascarpone, caciocavallo and fior di latte formed the base, while garlic butter, roasted snails, lemon zest and pangrattato (crispy toasted breadcrumbs) elevated the dish to something truly special. The snails, mild in flavour, allowed the other ingredients to take centre stage, resulting in an unexpectedly delightful bite.
As the meal drew to a close, excitement for dessert took over. My absolute favourite – Osteria Papà Tiramisu – stole the show. Layers of savoiardi biscuits soaked in espresso, velvety vanilla mascarpone and just the right touch of sweetness made every
spoonful heavenly. I could have devoured the entire dish had it not been for the other tempting treats that followed. The Padrone Verde, a house-made pistachio gelato topped with caramelised pistachios and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, transported me straight to an Italian gelateria. The gelato’s smooth, creamy texture was pure perfection, while the olive oil added an unexpected yet decadent finish. Finally, the Boccone Dolce provided the perfect ending. A refreshing raspberry sorbet enveloped in silky mascarpone Chantilly cream, topped with mixed berries and delicate Italian meringues. It was both sweet and sour, making it indulgent yet comforting, leaving us thoroughly satisfied.
Osteria Papà isn’t just another restaurant, it’s an experience, one that lingers long after the last bite. With fresh ingredients flown in weekly from Italy, herbs grown right on the rooftop and beautiful hand-painted crockery, every little detail has been well thought out. Whether you’re planning a relaxed dinner with loved ones or a special night out under the stars, this restaurant is an ideal choice, especially for families. The best part? It’s refreshingly accessible without compromising on quality. This isn’t just a meal; it’s a taste of Italy, served with heart and soul. ✤
To enjoy a culinary escape to Türkiye without leaving home, Amira Ragab headed to Bayram Turkish Grills for an afternoon of authentic tastes and warm hospitality.
Feeling overwhelmed by a busy week? I certainly was – juggling a million things – when I received an invitation to Bayram that was all too tempting to resist. This wasn't just a meal; it was a captivating journey.
Located at The Grove Village in Bani Jamra, this charming restaurant is a feast for the eyes. The exterior seamlessly blends classic and modern aesthetics, creating a sophisticated and inviting atmosphere. Warm browns and tranquil teal hues paint a picture of elegance and serenity. Delicate architectural details, from graceful columns to elegant wooden canopies, add warmth and comfort. Large windows offer a tantalising glimpse inside, promising a welcoming experience. A stunning Ottoman-style fountain adds a touch of magic, transporting you to a Turkish palace. I could already picture myself enjoying a leisurely Friday brunch on the outdoor terrace, once the new breakfast menu is launched.
Stepping inside felt like entering a corner of a historical Konya castle. The walls are adorned with personal plates – treasured heirlooms from Chef Sultan Bayram's own home. Authentic antiques, including an Ottoman helmet, a curved sword and a decorative kerosene lamp, alongside a handcrafted copper Turkish coffee pot, create a captivating display. Beautifully arranged shelves showcase authentic Turkish goods: fragrant spices, delicious Turkish delight and exquisite Turkish tea (which I sampled – utterly divine!).
We were greeted by impeccably dressed hostesses in
beautiful embroidered Palestinian attire – their elegance and professionalism were truly noteworthy. Our hostess, Ebru, guided us to our comfortable seating. The plush velvet chairs and sofas instantly created a cosy, home-like atmosphere.
Chef Sultan Bayram himself extended a warm welcome, offering me delicious mint tea and my friend a rich Turkish coffee, which she instantly adored for its earthy aroma. After a brief tour, showcasing the restaurant's stunning second floor (with a charming veranda perfect for an intimate coffee date), he shared his personal story through framed panels on the staircase wall – a truly passionate tale of his childhood in Turkey leading up to his journey to Bahrain.
Our culinary adventure began with a classic Americano for my companion, alongside some vibrant mocktails. The passion fruit and peach mojito was a tropical delight – a tangy and sweet fusion of the two fruits, expertly balanced with fresh mint and lime. The strawberry mojito, a refreshing twist on the classic, was equally delightful, an invigorating blend of fresh strawberries, mint, lime and soda. We also sampled the Turkish Heritage mocktail, a refreshing mix of grenadine and zesty orange juice –a colourful and comforting start.
Before the main event, a warming bowl of Mercimek Corbasi (lentil soup) arrived. Silky smooth and seasoned with traditional spices, this classic was garnished with crispy croutons, smoked paprika and fresh parsley – a perfect prelude to the dishes to come.
Next, we tackled the cold mezze. The Biberli Hummus, a smooth
blend of chickpeas and roasted red peppers, offered a delightful sweet and smoky flavour. This was accompanied by Cig Kofte, a traditional Turkish street food; spicy and flavourful bulgur wheat expertly prepared and shaped into small patties. Chef Sultan showed us the proper eating technique – wrapping small morsels of the kofte in lettuce with a squeeze of lemon – a truly delightful experience. The Salgam Salatasi (beetroot salad), a favourite on the table, provided a refreshing, tangy crunch - the earthy beetroot perfectly balanced by a zesty dressing. The portions were generous, ideal for sharing. Finally, we tried Hünkar Beğendi (Sultan's Delight) – a dish fit for royalty. With tender slow-cooked lamb stew atop a creamy, smoky aubergine purée, this was a rich, tasty and indulgent Ottoman classic.
Moving on to mains, my vegetarian friend thoroughly enjoyed the Kuru Fasulye (white beans), a hearty and comforting dish. The slow-cooked beans were creamy and hearty, served alongside tender okra, slow-cooked in a tangy tomato sauce with onions and garlic. The okra had absorbed the rich flavours of the sauce beautifully.
As a carnivore, I indulged in Karışık Izgara (mixed grill) – the tender cubes of beef and chicken, marinated in aromatic spices, were perfectly cooked and succulent. The lamb and chicken kebabs were equally juicy and burst with flavour. Chef Sultan's recommendation, the Lahmacun (Turkish pizza), was a revelation: thin, crispy flatbread topped with spiced minced meat, perfectly complemented by the onion-sumac mix, a squeeze of lemon and pomegranate molasses. We also sampled the Rib Eye Steak, a delicious Western inclusion, elevated by a touch of melted butter, which Chef Sultan expertly flambéed tableside for a touch of theatre The Kasarli Kofte (cheese kofte), filled with creamy Kashkaval cheese, offered a delightful blend of textures and tastes. Again, the portion size was ample for sharing.
For dessert, we shared both the Sutlu Baklava (milk-soaked baklava) – a decadent treat with a unique cocoa powder twist in the filling – and the Dondurmali Baklava (baklava with ice cream). The former offered a softer, creamier alternative to the traditional version, while the latter, with its scoop of rich Turkish ice cream, provided a perfect harmony of crunch and slight chewiness – a truly indulgent and unforgettable finale. Just as we thought we had finished, we were presented with Sütlaç –a creamy rice pudding. Baked in the oven with a caramelised top adding another delicious dimension, it was pure, sweet comfort in a bowl.
Bayram offers more than just a meal; it provides a charming cultural experience. The food is exceptional, the atmosphere enchanting and the service impeccable. Furthermore, the generous portion sizes, ideal for sharing, coupled with reasonable prices, make this Turkish eatery excellent value for money. Highly recommended – we'll be back! ✤

We were lucky enough to visit Umana Bali, LXR Hotels & Resorts, an exclusive spot in Ungasan at the southernmost tip of the island and, approaching by air, we were mesmerised by the location. As tropical islands go, this enchanting spot ticks all the boxes required to be called a true paradise. After touching down, we breezed through customs and were welcomed by a full limo service that whisked us toward our destination.
A short drive through winding roads lined with abundant vegetation, and we found ourselves at the grand lobby of Umana Bali, LXR Hotels & Resorts.
In this high-ceilinged open area, the green surroundings, artistry and architecture merge to create a gallery-like space that seamlessly blends the island’s past with its present. We were captivated by the striking metal and hand-blown chandelier, along with other details showcasing Bali’s rich cultural heritage.
We barely had the chance to greet all the welcoming faces before our check in was complete and we were being escorted to our villa by Richard, our dedicated curator. Umana Bali, LXR Hotels & Resorts boasts some of this world-famous destination’s most stunning ocean views and 72 luxuriously curated villas. The resort's layout features cascading terraces atop limestone cliffs, reminiscent of uma, or ancient rice paddy fields, from which it gets its name.
The lavish retreat also houses a grand ballroom, a large meeting room, a beautiful chapel overlooking the Indian Ocean, an infinity pool and a kids’ club. A holistic spa contains sanctuary rooms, a relaxation area, an indoor yoga pavilion, a sauna, a steam room, hot and cold plunge pools and an outdoor spa pool. Additionally, a fitness centre is open 24 hours a day for guests.
Our one-bedroom Ocean Pool Villa was 403sq/m of pure luxury. Moving through our spacious living area, we were met by an open-air paradise adorned with stunning views and a Balinese bale – a straw roofed structure. Every villa in the resort has its own infinity pool, and we took full advantage of our 10-metre version on many occasions. We loved the natural light illuminating the marble bathroom, featuring a rainfall shower and deep tub. There was also a second shower located outside.
The resort boasts a diverse range of first-class, in-house restaurants and bars. The hotel sources 80% of its produce from local farms and its hydroponic herb and vegetable garden. This means the freshest and most appetising dining experiences imaginable.
On our first evening, we experienced The Commune. Although the restaurant offers an eclectic mix of international, Asian
and local cuisine, we opted for the Balinese dishes, sampling many on our first night. We were hugely grateful that we did. We were fortunate enough to revisit this venue for breakfast, enjoying a semi-buffet style meal consisting of fresh fruits, juices, yoghurts, granola and pastry options. There was an egg station and additional hot selections for those who wanted a more substantial early meal. As guests, we could also order anything we liked from the à la carte menu.
Oliverra, is a high-end restaurant perched on a cliff with stunning Instagrammable terrace views of the ocean. This idyllic venue is where we dined during a mesmerising sunset on the second night of our stay.
Specialising in Mediterranean cuisine, Oliverra proved to be a real gem. The grilled scallops and octopus were the standout dishes for the evening, as was the perfectly cooked steak – one of the best we’ve tasted.
As the resort is positioned on a steep cliff, we had the privilege of being driven by car to the famous Melasti Beach below. Within minutes of leaving the hotel, we had our toes in the white sand, feeling the warm ocean lapping against our ankles.
Offering Japanese and Peruvian cuisine, Uma Beach House sources its ingredients from the local fisheries of Sanur and farms around the Ungasan and Kintamani areas. We were once again spoilt by what was placed in front of us. A truly delectable dining experience.
One of the activities we enjoyed was an organised village walk which took us past paddy fields and through the local town showcasing traditional Balinese houses and the many temples scattered around the area. We passed schools with little kids dressed in adorable pink uniforms who were quick to greet us with big smiles. Lucky enough to eat a traditional breakfast in one of the houses we encountered, we sampled a couple of firsts. The meal started with Klepon, a local sweet made with rice dough and what we can only describe as coconut pockets filled with sugarcane syrup and coffee. Next was a plate of steamed rice and Chicken Lilit, which is like a chicken kebab. A second chicken dish mixed with sambal matah meant a chilli flavour that left a great taste in the mouth. Overall, this was a novel and interesting experience for us.
Umana Bali, LXR Hotels & Resorts offers a range of curated experiences for guests and the one activity we will forever cherish, as dedicated foodies, was a cooking class where we excitedly learnt to make the foods we had eaten on our village walk.
We took great pleasure in discovering the authentic recipe for Chicken Lilit, a special dish made for celebrations. Next, we were shown how to combine the chilis, shallots, lemon grass and several other ingredients to create sambal matah. Once mixed, this delicious condiment is cooked as hot coconut oil is poured over it. We fell in love with it and even took some local chillis to try it at home. There’s also a great coffee tasting experience.
After the village walk, the timing was perfect to indulge in a relaxing spa treatment and, of course, we couldn’t come to Bali without enjoying a Balinese massage.
As we stepped into the beautifully designed spa, we were warmly welcomed. After filling out a brief form regarding our general health, preferred massage pressure and focus spots, we were led to the treatment area. Our experience began with a soothing foot wash, setting the stage for the ultimate relaxation. What followed was 60 minutes of pure bliss – a perfectly executed Balinese massage with aromatic oil that not only eased our muscles but also rejuvenated our souls.
Amongst the other memorable activities we enjoyed during our stay was the delightful floating breakfast. Slipping into our private pool on a warm and sunny morning, we once again ordered the Indonesian option as we had by now fallen in love with the local cuisine. This was a memorable way to appreciate our final meal at the resort before taking our leave of this magical island which has carved a place in our hearts. ✤

The multi-talented Spanish artist and local resident, Iris Morata, whose creations span across various fields, from shoe design to art and literature, is exhibiting her work at La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art this month. In an exclusive interview, Apple Sharma chats with the artist about her fascinating pieces and creative musings ahead of her upcoming exhibit.
FACT: You’ve worked across multiple creative fields. How did your journey into visual arts begin and what drew you to wood as your primary medium?
IM: I began painting for my home but soon found myself drawn to exploring texture and volume through different materials. This led to Ella, a piece inspired by my eldest daughter. The process was transformative and the outcome so profound that it inspired me to dive deeper into my artistic journey. Wood, with its warmth, versatility and unique textures, became the heart of my work. Every piece has its own grain and imperfections, adding richness to the final composition. By assembling thousands of individually crafted elements, I create a bond between material, light and perception, constantly challenging my creative boundaries and revealing new dimensions in my art.
FACT: What is your creative process for making your pieces – do you begin with a clear vision or do you allow the wood to guide the final form?
IM: My creative process balances intention and discovery. I have an outcome in mind, but I can never be certain if it will turn out as I envisioned or transform through the play of light, colour and perspective. Each colour is uniquely mixed, guided by light, mood and instinct. I work with the piece laid flat, meticulously assembling each element without seeing the full image as it will appear upright. It’s only when I lift it and see it from a distance that I, too,
Wood, with its warmth, versatility and unique textures, became the heart of my work.” “
discover the final result. That moment of revelation – the interplay between control and unpredictability – is what makes the process so magical for me.
FACT: You often explore texture in your work. What fascinates you about it and how has it shaped your artistic style?
IM: Texture has always been at the heart of my creative journey. My background in fashion, particularly in shoe design, taught me to listen to materials – to feel the cool resilience of metal, the supple warmth of leather, the delicate flow of silk. That awareness carried into my art, where wood’s natural imperfections become part of the story. Every eye perceives texture differently, just as shifting light reveals new versions of the same piece. This constant transformation, this silent dialogue between material, light and perception, is what captivates me and fuels my artistic exploration.
FACT: Your pieces require viewers to step back and shift their focus to reveal their depth. What kind of response or reflection do you hope to receive from your audience?
IM: I hope to evoke a sense of surprise. Up close, I want viewers to immerse themselves in the details – the texture, the imperfections, the subtle shifts in colour. But then, as they step back, I want them to let go of those details and experience the piece as a whole, almost as if
seeing it for the first time. That shift in perception, from intricate fragments to a unified image, mirrors the way we interpret the world – where meaning often changes depending on distance and perspective.
FACT: What's the inspiration behind your upcoming exhibition, A Thousand Fragments? What's the most complex work from this collection and how long did it take to create?
IM: This exhibition is deeply personal to me. A Thousand Fragments reflects the way individual pieces, seemingly fragmented when viewed up close, come together to form a unified whole – much like my own journey of being broken and reconstructed. I’ve learnt to step back and view things from a distance to heal and rebuild myself. Showing this work at La Fontaine, a place filled with history and soul, makes this experience even more meaningful. The most complex piece in the collection, Beyond the Veil, took over two months to complete. Composed of more than 3,100 pieces and 60 shades of blackish tones, it was a challenge both technically and emotionally. This work is a tribute to women, honouring their strength, resilience and the layers of identity that exist beyond what is seen.
FACT: In addition to being an artist, you're also an author and former shoe designer. How do you balance all your creative pursuits and which do you enjoy the most?
IM: I truly enjoy all forms of creativity that offer me the freedom to explore – whether it is breaking away from a set routine or making spontaneous changes to a recipe. Each creative pursuit offers its own distinct joy and challenge. However, I find that writing and art provide the perfect balance. As a novelist, writing requires deep mental focus and introspection, while art allows my mind to wander, offering a space for creative flow and concentration on the process itself. In both, I embrace duality – one side of me is meticulous and organised, while the other welcomes chaos, letting it shape the outcome in unexpected ways. Together, they complement each other, feeding my creativity in different but equally fulfilling ways.
FACT: On a lighter note, if you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
IM: I have always admired the work of photographer Martin Schoeller, particularly his hyperrealistic portraits. There's something deeply raw and intimate in the way he captures the natural essence of his subjects. I would love the opportunity to collaborate with him and reinterpret one of his portraits, exploring it through my own lens and reconstructing it through pieces and texture. I think the blending of his clarity with my fragmented approach could create something truly unique.
A Thousand Fragments opens on April 11 at La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art at 6pm and runs until July 31. ✤

132 rooms, 157 suspects, one dead body and an eccentric detective trying to solve a murder at the White House during a state dinner. The Agatha Christie-style whodunit was a hit with critics with ratings from 7.8 to 8.3 on a scale of 1-10.
Creator: Paul William Davies
Directors: Jaafar Mahmood, Liza Johnson
Cast: Uzo Aduba, Giancarlo Espisto, Molly Griggs, Susan Kelechi Watson, Jason Lee and Kylie Minogue
The eight-episode TV show is amusing, enigmatic and enjoyable all round, with twists and turns, all taking place in the upstairs, downstairs and backstairs of the White House, while one wildly eccentric detective, Cordelia Cupp, partners with sceptical special FBI Agent Edwin Park, to untangle an intriguing murder mystery, during a disastrous state dinner.
American actress Uzu Aduba, known for her portrayal of Crazy Eyes in Orange Is the New Black, turns in a joyous performance as the distinctly odd but brilliant detective tasked with working her way through a captive audience of suspects, many of whom have something to hide.
The victim is Giancarlo Esposito, who plays chief usher A.B Wynters, a man at the heart of the White House having worked there for 20 years. He is a meticulous human being who cares about the house and everyone in it. But investigations reveal there is no shortage of people who could, potentially, benefit from his death. Despite being overrun with characters, details, timelines and story, the comedic tone of this murder mystery imparts a joyful tone, making it a worthwhile bingeable experience. And, if you need more convincing, don’t forget the Kylie factor.
Adolescence employs a unique one-shot filming technique to create a visceral and immersive experience. “
Need to Know:
A tense and gripping four-part limited series, Adolescence employs a unique one-shot filming technique to create a visceral and immersive experience. The story explores the devastating consequences when a 13-year-old is accused of murder, examining the impact on his family, the investigating detectives and a clinical psychologist. Expect strong performances and a compelling, albeit occasionally uneven, narrative.
Creators: Jack Thorne, Stephen Graham
Director: Philip Barantini
Cast: Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper, Ashley Walters, Erin Doherty, Faye MarsayBelcher III and Angela Basset.
Adolescence masterfully captures the emotional turmoil of a family facing an unthinkable tragedy. The series shines in its unflinching portrayal of grief, suspicion and the desperate search for truth. The continuous-shot filming style creates a sense of immediacy, drawing the viewer into the unfolding events. The main character is realistically portrayed, adding depth and complexity to the narrative.
While the relentless tension of the one-shot format occasionally leads to a slightly rushed pacing, the overall impact is powerful. The exploration of male rage and societal pressures influencing young people is insightful, though some plot points, particularly those surrounding the investigation, may feel somewhat predictable. Despite these minor shortcomings, Adolescence offers a rewarding viewing experience. Its unflinching examination of a family's worst nightmare resonates powerfully, prompting reflection on the complexities of justice and the pressures faced by teenagers today. The series is elevated by strong performances and a commitment to realistic storytelling. Available for binge-watching now, it's a compelling watch before the lingering questions are fully answered.
By Rose Betts
There Is No Ship is London-born singer Rose Betts’ second album, which she announced four months prior to its release. It fluctuates between slower folk ballads and upbeat tracks, adopting themes of yearning, urgency and sadness in the singer’s tone. The album includes four pre-released tracks: Take This Body Home, Come Away , Doodles and Running . The latter three songs fall into the ‘upbeat’ category while the former is slower and less energetic.
Six , begins the album with a memorable chorus – a bold move which Betts executes perfectly, choosing to close it the same way. The singer reminisces about a doomed relationship in both Save me a Seat and Alderidge Creek , the latter hinting at tragedy with the lyrics “the world lost my lover and me”. I Am an Island and My Funeral Song are both melancholy, but while the former is dream-like and yearning, the latter is regretful and morbidly curious. Rose closes the album with title track There Is No Ship , emphasising freedom in being “bound to these shores” in contrast to former themes of feeling trapped. Overall, Rose Betts has created a cohesive album which evokes strong emotions in the listener, from sadness to passion, making for an intriguing listen.
By Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga’s new album Mayhem has been highly anticipated since lead single Disease was released on October 25 last year. The song opens the album with a confident note, leading into Abracadabra which is similarly composed with a dance worthy beat.
Perfect Celebrity stands out as a vibrant pop song, completed with Gaga’s distinct sound and a thrumming rhythm in the background as the singer laments public scrutiny. The song is succeeded by Vanish Into You which takes a romantic turn before the album moves into Killah, a fast and funky tune featuring French DJ, Gesaffelstein.
The ninth and 10th tracks, How Bad Do U Want Me and Don’t Call Tonight, have a more pop-rock based sound with faint electronic instrumentals in the background, giving listeners a chance to appreciate the lyrics layered on catchy melodies – particularly How Bad Do U Want Me, which went viral for its unique sound.
Blade of Grass slows the album to a ballad before leading into Die With A Smile. Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars released the last track on August 15, 2024. Ending the album with this song gives the listener a sense of familiarity as the haze of the album melts into enjoyment for the whole project.

Vera Wong’s Guide to Snooping

You’ll often hear dog owners scoff at people who say “it’s just a dog”. And, yes, we’re firmly in that camp, in case you hadn’t already guessed. But there have been stories around the world this month that have us even more convinced about the empathy of animals – if such proof were, in fact, needed. Just last week, police in South Carolina, USA, were called to help round up an escaped kangaroo. The animal’s owner told local news stations that she had to venture out in her pink pyjamas in pursuit of her adventurous pet – a domestic roo is a new one on us – and investigations
revealed the intrepid marsupial had been released by none other than a goat pal, who unlatched the gate. Meanwhile, in Wisconsin, zoo officials said attempts to recapture a pair of escaped otters were foiled when a racoon meddled with traps just before one of the fugitives was about to enter. And, in the UK, a donkey named Ned proved animals are certainly open to a bit of bribery. The escape artist, who local police say is known for ‘hoofing it’, was causing traffic chaos after making a break from his field. He was eventually bribed to head back home with the strategic use of tasty mints, apparently his favourite treat. We should never underestimate our fourlegged friends.
Have you heard of the Darwin Awards? They’re tongue in cheek accolades passed out for people who’ve met their demise in somewhat dumb and, often, predictable circumstances. The official description is: “The Darwin Awards honour those who tip chlorine into our gene pool, by accidentally removing their own DNA from it during the spectacular climax of a 'great idea' gone veddy, veddy wrong.”
As avid newshounds, we like to keep abreast of such foolishness but we never expected to discover a surefire winner in the wild, so to speak.
That was until we read the sad tale of two
chaps in Oregon who went missing after going in search of the mythical Sasquatch. The pair, aged 37 and 59, set off on their quest in Washington State – not known for its clement winter weather – shortly before Christmas last year. A search was launched when they failed to return home and their bodies were discovered in a national forest three days later.
Here's a hint, the Sasquatch didn’t do it. According to the local sheriff’s office, cause of death appeared to be ‘exposure, based on weather conditions and ill-preparedness’. Definitely Darwinian.
A little nugget caught our attention this week. The tale of two men in the UK convicted of stealing a toilet. So far, a bit odd but pretty mundane. However, the fully functional prized potty in question happens to be an art installation made of 18-carat gold and the pair used sledgehammers and crowbars to remove it from Oxfordshire’s historic Blenheim Palace, where it was on display back in 2019. The luxury latrine, insured for USD6 million, was the work of controversial artist Maurizio Cattelan and had previously been shown at New York’s
Guggenheim Museum. Michael Jones and Fred Doe were convicted of various charges in connection with the theft. Another man, James Sheen, had previously admitted his organisational role in the heist. Prosecutors believe the magnificent edifice was broken down and sold in parts but not before Jones had made use of the pricey porcelain – an experience he described as ‘splendid’.
The crooks are awaiting sentencing. The name of the golden toilet? America. You couldn’t make this up!
