Season’s Greetings

"Of all the months of the year there is not a month one half so welcome to the young, or so full of happy associations, as the last month of the year." – Charles Dickens “

It’s hard to believe another year is almost over. It seems like only last week we were welcoming 2025 and now, 2026 is fast approaching. There’s a great selection of events lined up for National Day to kick-off the celebrations followed by a fullon festive season packed with kids’ activities, brunches, lunches and New Year parties. We’ve rounded up loads of options to help you decide how to spend these special days and I hope to see some of you out and about around town.

We went festive too in the Dining section, enjoying a seasonal feast at Hunters alongside fabulous Greek fare at Mykonos, a steak and sushi pairing at Mr. Tailor Steakhouse and classic French flavours at La Maison De L’Entrecôte.

My colleague also paid a visit to Andaz Doha and spent a couple of days learning all about the newest addition to Qatar’s hospitality scene – she was very impressed. Sticking with the festive theme, we bring details of great ways to spend the season in Budapest and feature a gorgeous capsule from Etro, these looks will ensure you’re totally party ready.

Elsewhere, we chatted to Massimiliano Binda of The Ned and Chef Dhrumil Gor of The Torch. And my colleague caught up with HE Mohammed Al Kuwari, Years of Culture Advisor on Latin American Affairs, who explained how cultural diplomacy can sometimes achieve things politicians can’t.

Make sure you check out the Listen Up pages for details of lots of happenings across the city this month. We’re particularly excited at the return of football fever with the 11th FIFA Arab Cup and I can’t wait to visit the Qatar International Art Festival – I’m hoping Santa might be thinking of me when he stops there!

It’s a packed magazine for a packed month ahead and I’m excited for the festive days and the New Year.

Wishing you all season’s greetings and may your days be merry and bright. See you on the other side.

A VISION IN MOTION

Education City has just welcomed a bold new cultural landmark as Qatar Foundation opened the Lawh Wa Qalam: M. F. Husain Museum.

In the final days of November, Doha’s cultural offering gained a striking new addition as Qatar Foundation unveiled the Lawh Wa Qalam: M. F. Husain Museum in the heart of Education City. The museum is dedicated to modernist icon Maqbool Fida Husain, whose prolific career shaped contemporary art across the region and beyond.

The building itself makes an immediate statement. Designed from a concept sketch by Husain and developed by architect Martand Khosla, the structure reflects the artist’s bold visual language: angular, expressive and unmistakably his. Inside, visitors can explore one of the most extensive collections of Husain’s later works, including paintings, tapestries, films, photography and archival materials that trace the evolution of his ideas, themes and influences.

A major highlight is Seeroo fi al ardh, the artist’s final large-scale work, now integrated into the museum experience and offering a deeper reading of his fascination with Arab civilisation, Islamic heritage and modern identity.

The museum also introduces a programme of workshops, talks and artistic encounters designed to open the space to different audiences, from students and families to seasoned art lovers.

For many, including young creatives at VCUarts Qatar, the new institution offers a rare opportunity to study Husain’s multidisciplinary

approach up close and understand how he bridged cultures, mediums and histories. The space also reflects Education City’s ethos: curiosity encouraged, ideas exchanged, creativity shared.

The new venue was inaugurated by HH Shaikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, who told assembled guests: “Maqbool Fida Husain is a legendary artist – a true master whose artistic works transcend borders and connect cultures, histories, and identities. I am delighted to fulfil the dream of this late, esteemed artist by inaugurating the museum, which will stand as a new landmark in Education City showcasing pages from his life and a collection of his works.”

Among the artworks within the museum are some of the 35 paintings inspired by Arab civilisation that Husain completed before his death in 2011. Works on display also incorporate Husain’s engagement with Islamic history and motifs, reflecting his interest in Islamic artistic and cultural traditions. Together, they point to the role that Islamic history and regional artistic traditions played in shaping Husain’s evolving creative approach as an artist. ✤

ARABIAN FOOTBALLING HEATWAVE

Fresh off a streak of global football events, Qatar is gearing up for its next big kick-off: the 11th FIFA Arab Cup, bringing 16 nations and a citywide celebration to the country this month.

After the huge success of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, followed by major events this year like the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2025, Qatar isn’t slowing down. This December, the spotlight swings back to Doha for one of the region’s most electric showdowns: the 11th FIFA Arab Cup, running from December 1 to 18.

Six world-class stadiums (Lusail, Al Bayt, Khalifa International, Education City, Ahmad Bin Ali and Stadium 974) will host 16 national teams, including Qatar, defending champions Algeria, heavyweights like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Tunisia, plus the UAE, Iraq, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan and Palestine… Four groups. Fierce rivalries. High stakes. Pure football!

And whether you’re heading to the matches or not, the action won’t stay inside the tournament venues. The capital is transforming into a full-scale football festival, with entire districts switching into celebration mode. In Msheireb Downtown Doha, Barahat Msheireb and the surrounding

streets will pulse with screenings, interactive installations, live performances and family activities honouring the spirit of the Arab world.

Across The Pearl and Gewan Island, visitors can expect open-air screenings by the marina, music and cultural shows inspired by the 16 competing nations, food popups, roaming entertainers and creative workshops in a buzzing art-hub setting. Meanwhile, Lusail Boulevard is gearing up for one of the city’s biggest fan gatherings yet, blending cultural showcases, games, live shows and family entertainment in a daily street-festival atmosphere. One thing is certain: the Arab Cup spirit will be impossible to miss. ✤

Over the years, QIAF has evolved into a global meeting point for painters, sculptors, designers, performers and creative thinkers from more than 65 countries. The festival champions cross-cultural exchange, environmental responsibility and the intersection of art, science and innovation. This year’s programme is especially rich, giving you plenty to explore. Katara will also host a Cultural Musical Evening (December 8), an Art Conference and Panel Talk Show (December 9), and a Networking Dinner gathering international artists (December 10).

On December 11, fashion enters the spotlight with both a Sustainable Fashion Show and an Artistic Fashion Show, while collectors will have their eyes on the QIAF Art Auction on December 10. NIGHTS OF LIGHT

A dazzling new tradition arrives in Doha as Al Bidda Park transforms into a glowing wonderland for the Lantern Festival.

As November drew to a close and the city slipped into its festive season, Al Bidda Park gained a new reason for everyone to stop by: the Lantern Festival, a stunning celebration running until March 28, 2026.

Already a favourite spot for joggers, families and weekend loungers, the park is now shining brighter than ever with a nighttime experience crafted to delight all ages and bring an extra touch of warmth to Doha’s cooler season.

Behind the magic is Safe Flight Solutions, the team known for delivering some of Qatar’s most crowd-pleasing outdoor events, from Qatar Balloon Festival to Visit Qatar Kite Festival, and Lusail Sky Festival.

Created in collaboration with artistic partners from Haitian culture, the festival celebrates centuries of craftsmanship, imagination and storytelling. Visitors can wander through hand-crafted illuminated sculptures shaped like animals, plants and cultural icons spread across themed zones, before heading to the Family Fun Zone for inflatables, arcade games and playful activities.

Food lovers will find plenty to savour at the international food court, while those seeking something special can book the Above the Clouds Lounge, an elegant dining concept inspired by hot-air ballooning. ✤

A DAY OF PRIDE

Qatar National Day returns on December 18, filling the country with parades, cultural showcases and citywide festivities. We’ve put together a curated selection of places and experiences to help you enjoy the occasion to its fullest.

The 2025 Slogan

This year’s slogan, Bekum Ta'lu W’ Minkum Tantazer (‘The nation rises with you, waits for you’), sets the tone for the festivities. Inspired by a speech from HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, given during his 2016 visit to Qatar University, it’s a reminder that the country’s momentum comes from its people: their creativity, their spirit, their drive. A simple, powerful message and a fitting backdrop to a day that brings everyone together.

Doha Corniche

If there’s one place where National Day feels truly electric, it’s the Corniche. This is where the official parade takes place, featuring the Armed Forces, the Amiri Guard, the police, and internal security services. It’s loud, spectacular and completely unmissable. The atmosphere builds throughout the day with the National Day Air Show, as military aircraft perform aerobatic manoeuvres over the waterfront. Stick around until evening: the West Bay skyline becomes the star of the show as fireworks light up the water. Expect crowds, cameras and that unmistakable National Day buzz.

Katara Cultural Village

For a more cultural spin on National Day, Katara has you covered. Think hands-on workshops, storytelling sessions for kids, traditional music and an artisanal market by the water. This is also where the very first edition of the Doha International Music and Marching Festival (Doha Tattoo) will be held from December 16 to 20. The inaugural festival comes under the patronage of H.E. Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Minister of Interior and Commander of Lekhwiya. And the lineup is impressive: national ensembles from seven countries will take the stage, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Turkey, Jordan, Oman, Kazakhstan and Qatar.

Audiences can expect standout performances from the Irish Guards and Royal Air Force Music Services (UK), the United States Air Force Honor Guard, the legendary Ottoman Mehter Band, the Jordanian Armed Forces Band, the Royal Guard of Oman Band and the Central Military Band of Kazakhstan. Qatar will also take pride of place with musical units from the Ministries of Defence and Interior, the Amiri Guard, the Ministry of Culture and the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. The programme includes nightly

showcases mixing international performances with Qatari heritage segments, including Ardha, as well as fireworks and drone shows that will light up Doha’s sky throughout the week. Tickets priced at QR15, QR30 and QR100 through Virgin Megastore Tickets.

Msheireb Downtown

Msheireb is also going all in. The district turns into a walkable festival zone, with interactive installations, performances and plenty of surprises tucked between its streets and squares. It’s the perfect spot for families or anyone who wants a stylish, easygoing way to take in the celebrations, from 4pm to 10pm.

A CLASSY COMEBACK

fact spent time with the newly revived Passat Highline 2.0L – discovering comfort, refinement and confidence in every detail.

Everyone loves a good comeback story – it’s hard not to smile when a familiar favourite returns, ready to reclaim its spotlight. That smile only widened when we walked up to the all-new Volkswagen Passat Highline 2.0L, the model that sets the benchmark for the range.

As a team accustomed to test-driving luxury and highperformance models, we were curious: could a trusted business saloon still feel fresh in 2025?

From our first moments with the Passat, it was clear this was a car that had far more to say than simply “I’m back”.

Quietly Commanding

Volkswagen didn’t reintroduce the Passat to blend in. The Highline’s redesigned front end features a floating section tied together by a seamless LED strip, centred by an illuminated VW badge that’s hard to miss. Paired with IQ.Light dual-lens matrix headlights, this saloon adapts its lighting on the move – ideal for evening highway drives, early commutes and the odd unlit backstreet that reminds you why good headlights matter. We enjoyed the welcome-light animation and dynamic indicators on every arrival. With its 19-inch alloys and long, sculpted silhouette, this saloon looks equally at home gliding up to a fivestar hotel valet or pulling up outside a cosy street-side café. At the rear, super-red LED tail lights stretch across the width

of the car, emphasising its segment-leading length. It delivers elegance with quiet presence – a gentle nudge that says, “Yes, you may admire me”.

Built for Comfort

If the exterior hints at comfort, the cabin confirms it. The new Passat is the longest and most spacious version ever built, and you feel that immediately. Leather seating, a panoramic sunroof and 30-colour ambient lighting set the tone, letting you choose everything from calm neutrals to cool blue or warm amber.

But the seating is the real headline. Ventilated massage seats in the front and rear, with electric adjustment and soft headrest pillows, bring a level of comfort to daily driving that feels genuinely uplifting. A single recline in the rear massage seat was enough to spark a collective realisation: our living room sofas might be due for replacement.

Practicality is strong too, with 17 storage compartments and a 520-litre boot. Whether it’s family duties, airport runs or a ‘fiveminute’ errand that somehow becomes a full shopping trip, the Passat handles it with ease.

Seamless & Smart

Technology is one of the Highline’s strengths. The 15-inch infotainment display paired perfectly with the 10.25-inch digital cockpit, delivering crisp graphics and menus that didn’t

require guesswork. The head-up display added clarity without feeling intrusive.

Wireless charging, front and rear USB ports and a smooth sevenspeaker audio system kept us connected. And while some car systems seem determined to test patience, the Passat kept things simple – no confusing menus, no digital scavenger hunts, just tech that quietly did its job.

Smooth & Steady

On the road, this 2.0L packs the strongest engine in the range, delivering 217hp and 350Nm of torque. Coupled with Volkswagen’s familiar seven-speed DSG transmission, the power delivery stayed smooth and unbothered by traffic. Acceleration felt responsive without being abrupt, and the car maintained a reassuring sense of stability at higher speeds – the composure you expect from well-sorted German engineering.

Refinement was just as clear. Road noise stayed low, gear changes barely noticeable and the overall drive had an easygoing quality that made longer journeys feel shorter. Its charm lay in its steady confidence – more “I’ve got this” than “watch me”.

Assistance That Matters

Multiple airbags, ISOFIX anchors and a sturdy structure built around Volkswagen’s safety standards contributed to a sense of security throughout our time with the car.

The Bottom Line

By the end of our test drive, the Passat Highline 2.0L had made its case clearly. It delivered comfort, refinement and technology in a package that felt genuinely well thought out. From the spacious cabin to the calm, confident drive, it came across as a car designed for people who want ease without sacrificing quality.

This business saloon delivered the fullest expression of what the new Passat was meant to be. It carried itself with quiet assurance, offered features we actually used and delivered a driving experience that never felt strained or overcomplicated. In a segment full of options, the Passat stood out by simply doing everything well – by being the saloon that wins you over naturally, without ever resorting to jazz hands. ✤

The Passat Highline came equipped with driver assistance features that added confidence to the experience. Front Assist, Lane Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control all worked quietly in the background, stepping in when needed and staying out of the way when they weren’t. The 360-degree camera and Park Assist made tight manoeuvres less stressful, while rear cross-traffic alert proved handy in car parks when everyone seemed to have the same idea at the same time.

From our first moments with the Passat, it was clear this was a car that had far more to say than simply ‘I’m back’.”

A TECHNOLOGICAL MILESTONE

Porsche unveiled the new Cayenne Electric online, ahead of its launch at Icons of Porsche in Dubai.

The vehicle marks the beginning of a new era for the car maker with a fully-electric SUV that combines Porsche DNA with pioneering technology in two models: the Cayenne Electric and the Cayenne Turbo Electric – both with all-wheel drive and therefore equipped with electronic Porsche Traction Management (ePTM).

The Cayenne Turbo accelerates from 0-100km/h in 2.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 260 km/h. This powerful e-performance is made possible by a newly developed drive system that develops up to 850kW (1,156PS) and up to 1,500Nm of torque when Launch Control is activated. The Turbo variant features direct oil cooling of the electric motor on the rear axle to ensure high continuous output and efficiency. This is an innovation from motorsport. In normal driving mode, up to 630kW (857PS) is available. By means of the Push-to-Pass function2, an additional 130kW (176PS) can be activated for 10 seconds at the press of a button.

The entry-level Cayenne model has 300kW (408PS) in normal operation and 325kW (442PS) and 835Nm of torque with Launch Control. It accelerates from 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 230 km/h.

The Cayenne Electric owes much of its versatility to its chassis. Adaptive air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is fitted as standard on both models. The Turbo also features the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) limited-slip rear differential. Both models can be equipped with rear-axle steering. In addition, Porsche Active Ride is also available for the flagship model for the first time.

At the heart of the all-electric Cayenne models is the newly developed 113kWh high-voltage battery, with a combined WLTP range of up to 642km for the Cayenne Electric and up to 623km for the Turbo. The SoC (State of Charge) can be increased from 10% to 80% in less than 16 minutes and energy for a range of 325km (Cayenne) or 315km (Cayenne Turbo) can be added in 10 minutes.

The Cayenne Electric combines the Porsche brand’s signature proportions with a clearly developed design language. Highlights include the low bonnet with slim Matrix LED headlights. The

strongly contoured wings are also very typical of other Porsche designs, as is the flyline – the iconic gently sloping roofline.

The side view is characterised by frameless doors and a striking crease in the door surface. The side skirts have a distinctly threedimensional design and are painted in Volcanic Grey Metallic and, on the Cayenne Turbo, in high-gloss black.

The model-specific wheel arch trims emphasise the car’s off-road character while striking details at the rear, such as the light strip with its distinctive 3D look and animated graphics, as well as the illuminated Porsche lettering, underline the modern design language. The Cayenne Turbo features numerous contrasting elements in the exclusive Turbonite colour. These include the Porsche crests, the faces of the alloy wheels and the side window trims.

The new Cayenne Electric is 55mm longer than the combustionengined model with dimensions of 4,985mm long, 1,980mm wide and 1,674 mm high, offering more rear legroom and comfort for the passengers in the back than ever before. The rear seat system is electrically adjustable as standard and offers flexible adjustment options.

The newly introduced Mood Modes turn the interior into an experience space that adapts to mood and situation. The sliding Panoramic Roof with Variable Light Control, an electrically switchable liquid crystal foil, provides an airy feeling of space.

In terms of digitalisation, the models feature the newly developed Porsche Driver Experience with its Flow Display – an elegantly curved OLED panel that blends seamlessly into the centre console complemented by a fully digital instrument cluster with 14.25inch OLED technology and a 14.9-inch optional passenger display. Never before has a Cayenne been so comprehensively and individually customisable as the new all-electric model. Customers can choose from 13 standard colours, nine wheel designs from 20 to 22 inches, 12 interior combinations as well as up to five interior packages and up to five accent packages. Further customisation is available through Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur. ✤

Revolutionary tech meets physics for a new electric toothbrush that promises deep cleaning with gentle performance.

Recently presented at the World Dental Congress in Shanghai, the Ranvoo Air Jet II Electric Toothbrush features a core breakthrough – mastering the Coandă Effect (it’s physics and involves the tendency of a fluid to stay attached to a nearby curved surface).

The brush uses revolutionary AirJet technology, featuring BubbleFlush 2-in-1 cleaning, which directs a powerful stream of air and water deep between the teeth. As air is compressed and accelerated through the Coanda Halo brush head, it generates high-speed micro bubbles which penetrate deeply and then burst on contact, lifting away plaque and debris with a gentle but powerful action. The result? Deep cleaning and whitening, all powered by bubbles.

The gadget includes multiple brush heads and cleaning modes to cater to sensitive teeth, whitening and comprehensive care. The toothbrush features seamless body construction that achieves a full IPX7 waterproof rate and the sealed brush-head connection prevents mould growth. It has a 60-day battery life and comes with a space-saving magnetic wall-mounted charger. ✤

The Managing Director of The Ned Doha talks pride in the property’s heritage and pays tribute to the frontline teams.

The Ned Doha is part of a unique brand in a unique building –please tell us about the USPs?

The Ned blends history, design and lifestyle in a way that feels instantly iconic. What makes The Ned Doha special is the combination of timeless glamour with modern energy, all inside one of Qatar’s most architecturally significant buildings.

We stand out by being more than a hotel. We are a members’ club, a social hub and a dining destination with seven restaurants, a vibrant events programme, an impressive art collection and truly beautiful public spaces. This balance of heritage and contemporary lifestyle creates an experience that is completely unique in the market.

The hotel has just celebrated its third anniversary in Qatar. How did you mark the occasion and what have been the main changes since you opened?

Celebrating our third anniversary was a proud moment. We marked it by recognising the people who made The Ned Doha what it is today through intimate gatherings, special menus and internal celebrations that reflected our journey.

Over three years, the property has evolved with new dining concepts, expanded programming, elevated partnerships and continuous improvements in service. Qatar has grown rapidly, and we have grown with it while staying true to our identity and sense of community.

Are there any new offerings or developments coming up in the short to medium term that you can share with our readers? We have several exciting developments ahead. In the

short term, we are introducing refreshed menus, seasonal experiences and enhanced programming across our restaurants and member events.

In the medium term, we are focusing on collaborations with global and regional brands in fashion, wellness and culture, along with new social experiences designed to keep The Ned Doha dynamic and relevant.

Your career in hospitality has spanned more than 30 years. What first drew you to this sector and can you share any funny, strange or enlightening experiences from your time in the field?

From a young age, I was drawn to hospitality because every day feels different and full of human connection. The ability to create memorable moments for people is what inspired me to join this field.

Through the years, I’ve experienced everything from unexpected guest requests to memorable encounters that taught me the importance of staying calm, creative and empathetic. What has stayed with me most is the belief that guests will always remember how you made them feel.

If you could swap positions with anyone in the hotel for a day, who would it be and why?

I would choose to spend a day with our front-line team, either at the Front Office or in our restaurants. These roles offer a direct window into our guests’ emotions, expectations and feedback. They are the heartbeat of the hotel, and spending a day in their shoes is the best reminder of why we do what we do.✤

BUILDING BRIDGES, SHAPING INFLUENCE

As the Qatar Argentina and Chile 2025 Year of Culture (YoC) comes to an end, fact caught up with HE Mohammed Al Kuwari, YoC Advisor on Latin American Affairs and Qatar's former Ambassador to Mexico, to reflect on the highlights that made this edition stand out and the long-term connections they set in motion.

fact – You represented Qatar in Mexico before becoming Advisor for Latin American Affairs for the Years of Culture programme. In your view, what can cultural diplomacy achieve that traditional political diplomacy does not always accomplish?

Cultural diplomacy works because it connects people on a human level. Political diplomacy is important, of course, but it often revolves around strategy, negotiations and formal agendas. Culture is different. It creates space for people to meet, share experiences and genuinely understand one another.

When you bring people together through things like sports, music, art or cultural events, you’re speaking to emotions and values, not policies. And that’s what builds real trust. These kinds of exchanges create relationships that are much more resilient and long-term, and they’re grounded in respect. It’s something traditional diplomacy on its own can’t always achieve.

fact – Cultural exchange often paves the way for economic opportunities. Which sectors (art, gastronomy, design or tourism) do you see as the most promising between Qatar and Latin America?

All four sectors honestly have huge potential. Latin America’s food scene is incredibly creative, and it fits really well with how Qatar’s culinary culture has been growing and diversifying. The design side is also exciting, whether it’s textiles, ceramics or sustainable fashion, there’s a lot of room for collaboration with Qatar’s creative community.

Tourism is another big one. People now want meaningful cultural experiences when they travel, and the connection between Qatar, Argentina and Chile creates a really interesting mix of destinations that feel different but complementary.

Chile Volunteer Trip
Years of Culture Display Stand

And we’re already seeing how cultural exchange leads to real economic opportunities. When delegations from Chile and Argentina took part in Hospitality Qatar, it showed how quickly cultural relationships can open doors in trade, innovation and industry. Once you build trust through culture, the business side follows very naturally.

fact – You are currently working to build bridges between Qatar, Chile and Argentina. In your opinion, what connects these different cultures?

Qatar, Chile and Argentina share a lot at the cultural level. All three places have a strong sense of hospitality, a deep connection to family and a real resilience that’s part of their national identity. You see it in their food, in their art, in their crafts, there’s so much pride in the stories behind these traditions.

What also stands out is the curiosity. People from all three cultures are genuinely open to learning from one another, and that makes collaboration feel very natural. When those values line up, creative partnerships grow in a way that’s organic and meaningful for everyone involved.

fact – After a year marked by the Qatar–Chile–Argentina partnership, which collaborations or achievements do you consider the most emblematic of this edition?

Several really stand out for me. The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra performing at Teatro Colón was truly unforgettable. It felt like a real meeting point between our cultures. Seeing a Qatari institution on one of the world’s most iconic stages, with an audience that responded so warmly, was a powerful moment for everyone involved.

But there were many others that captured the spirit of this year. The Doha Debates Town Hall in Buenos Aires brought young

people together around big global questions, and the CultuRide across the Andes showed how sport can create connection in completely unexpected ways. Our volunteer exchanges in Argentina and Chile, especially the projects in coastal communities of Matanzas, also had a lot of emotional impact. These are the kinds of experiences that stay with people long after the year ends.

fact – Years of Culture also shapes the way Qatar presents itself to the world. How does this programme strengthen the country’s cultural leadership internationally?

Years of Culture is about building genuine relationships with countries around the world, like Argentina and Chile this year, and creating space for both sides to share their heritage and creative talent.

What’s especially meaningful is how the initiative opens doors beyond the cultural sector. It gives artists and cultural practitioners more visibility, but it also supports social development, whether that’s through community projects, education exchanges or volunteer programmes that bring people together in a very real way. At the same time, it creates new pathways for economic development by connecting creative industries, entrepreneurs and businesses who might never have met otherwise.

And increasingly, Years of Culture is becoming a platform for innovation. You see it when tech startups participate in big events like Hospitality Qatar or Project Qatar, or when designers, filmmakers and young creators experiment with new forms of storytelling and collaboration.

By bringing all of these exchanges to life – cultural, social, economic and creative – the programme strengthens Qatar’s global presence and reinforces its role as a place where creativity, dialogue and forward-thinking ideas can flourish.

BALANCING HERITAGE WITH CULINARY TECHNIQUE

Dhrumil Gor, Senior Sous Chef, The Torch Doha, talks preserving tradition and the importance of sustainability.

What’s your earliest kitchen memory and how did this affect your decision to become a chef?

My earliest kitchen memory is standing on a stool beside my grandfather while he cooked. I remember being fascinated by the smells, the sounds of sizzling pans and how he could turn simple ingredients into something that brought the whole family together. He’d let me stir the pot or sprinkle in a pinch of salt and, even though it was a small role, it made me feel proud and connected to what we were creating. That experience taught me that food isn’t just about eating, it’s about emotion, creativity and sharing moments with others. It’s what first sparked my curiosity about cooking and eventually inspired me to become a chef. I wanted to give people that same sense of comfort and joy that I felt in my grandfather’s kitchen.

One of your strong points is the sourcing and use of seasonal ingredients. How do you achieve this given the limits imposed by Qatar’s climate and why do you believe it’s important?

Sourcing and using seasonal ingredients is one of my core philosophies as a chef, even in a challenging environment like Qatar’s. While the climate limits the variety and availability of certain local produce, I work closely with local vendors, farms and hydroponic growers who are doing incredible work with sustainable agriculture in desert conditions. This includes using controlled environments to grow herbs, leafy greens, tomatoes and even strawberries at certain times of the year.

To supplement local sourcing, I also stay updated with the seasonal calendars of nearby regions – like Lebanon, Jordan or parts of India – so I can bring in fresh ingredients that are in peak season regionally.

I believe using seasonal ingredients is important not only for flavour and quality but also for sustainability. Ingredients harvested at their peak require less artificial intervention and transport, which reduces environmental impact. It also creates a dynamic, ever-changing menu.

Your dishes have won awards. Please tell us about that, what were the awards? The process that went into these recipes and can they be found at The Torch?

Yes, I’ve been fortunate to have a few of my dishes recognised in culinary competitions and hospitality awards, both locally and regionally. One standout was a modern take on chateaubriand using an aged method, grilling to perfection and using locally grown herbs. This dish received recognition at the UK Culinary Professionals Awards, where the focus was on innovation while respecting tradition.

Another award-winning creation was a deconstructed fresh pasta and hot tiramisu dessert, which earned a gold medal at the Great Indian Culinary Challenge. It balanced familiar Italian flavours with modern techniques.

The process behind these recipes involved deep research into traditional Italian and regional dishes, then applying contemporary methods to elevate the presentation and flavour without losing their soul. I worked closely with local vendors for fresh herbs and spices, ensuring the ingredients were seasonal and high-quality. You can find variations of these award-winning dishes featured

The Torch, especially during seasonal tasting menus or special events.

Please tell us about your signature dish at The Torch Doha. How was it developed and what makes it popular?

One of my signature dishes at The Torch Doha is the Steak Royal with Homemade Steak Rub Sauce. It blends traditional Mediterranean and Italian flavours with modern presentation and techniques and it’s become a favourite among both local and international guests.

The inspiration came from my wife Regina when we spoke about the classic Italian and Mediterranean dishes like beef ragu and seasonal steak. I wanted to reimagine them in a way that respects the flavours while offering something unique and elevated. The steak is marinated for 12 hours in a blend of spices, then slowcooked until it’s incredibly tender. Instead of the usual chips accompaniment, I use light, sweet potato chips to give freshness and balance, along with a homemade steak rub sauce and sourdough cheese toast that brings subtle sweetness and ties the dish to local produce.

The development process took several weeks of tasting and refining. I worked closely with local suppliers to get the best quality meat and spices, and with my team to perfect the balance of traditional and modern elements.

What makes it popular, I believe, is the sense of familiarity it offers while still surprising with unexpected textures and presentation. ✤

AEGEAN FLAVOURS ON DOHA TIME

With Doha’s terrace season in full swing, Sirine Boudjadi stops by Mykonos at InterContinental Doha Beach & Spa and walks straight into an Aegean-style lunch full of sunshine and familiar flavours.

It’s that sweet spot of the year in Qatar: the weeks when the sun is warm, the breeze is actually a breeze and everyone suddenly remembers that terraces exist. For some of you, the sea might even be a bit too cold for a swim now, but honestly? You don’t need to get in the water to feel like you’ve escaped somewhere. We grabbed a table at Mykonos, the Greek restaurant at InterContinental Doha Beach & Spa, and within minutes, it felt like we’d traded Doha for the Aegean. White walls, bright blues, bougainvillea sneaking into the frame… the whole place just slips into that unmistakable Mediterranean mood without forcing anything.

A Confident Start

One thing I’ve always loved about Greek food is how it’s built for sharing. Nothing arrives alone, nothing feels too precious and before you know it, the table turns into a small landscape of bowls, plates, dips and bread. That’s exactly what happens at Mykonos! We start with the Horiatiki, the classic village salad that tastes like summer. Big chunks of cucumber, cherry tomatoes that burst with sweetness, slivers of green pepper, red onion, olives, all tossed just enough to bring everything together without turning it into a soupy mess. The feta on top is a proper slab, not crumbles; creamy in the middle, slightly briny on the edges, with capers adding that sharp little spark.

We also make room for the Taramas, a fish roe cream, smooth, pale, almost mousse-like, topped with tiny pops of roe and a swirl of herb oil. It’s rich, airy, salty in the right way, and pretty much impossible to stop eating with the slices of country bread.

Right next to it, the Tzatziki acts like the refreshing counterpart: thick yogurt, grated cucumber, dill that we can actually taste, a touch of garlic that doesn’t overpower. We can tell it’s homemade because it still has texture, not that factory-smooth paste you sometimes get. And with the homemade warm pita, it just works beautifully. The Spanakopita is also a must. Made of a golden and crisp phyllo, it opens to a filling where the spinach and herbs stay bright, not soggy, and dipping each bite into the yogurt gives that perfect hot-cold contrast.

No Twists Needed

As the main courses arrive, we’re fully settled into the rhythm of Mykonos. The menu sticks to the Greek playbook, no twists, no reinventions and that’s where the real challenge lies. With dishes this iconic, there’s nowhere to hide: either you deliver the flavours people know by heart or you don’t. The Moussaka makes a strong case immediately. Served in its little cast-iron pot, it appears bubbling under a golden béchamel sauce. Inside, the layers fall neatly into place: soft potatoes, tender eggplant and a rich beef ragout. It’s comfort food, the Greek way.

Listed as Gyros Arni on the menu, the crispy lamb shoulder is also one of the standouts. It’s the kind of classic you think you already know, right up until the first bite proves you wrong. The meat is unbelievably tender, with those caramelised edges that only come from slow cooking, seasoned with salt and oregano. It’s served with the same pita we happily over-indulged in earlier, plus tomato, onion and a generous bowl of tzatziki. We put everything together ourselves, fold it into the bread, and suddenly the plate is gone long before we meant it to be. Rustic, abundant and exactly as a Greek main should deliver. When dessert finally shows up, we’re surprisingly ready for it. Maybe it’s the nature of Greek food (lots of vegetables, olive oil, grilled meats, lighter sauces), but it’s one of those cuisines where you reach the end of the meal and still happily say, ‘yes, bring the sweets’. No guilt, no hesitation, just curiosity. First up, the Galaktoboureko: a neat square of golden phyllo with that glossy,

just-baked look. The top cracks the moment the fork goes in, giving way to a semolina cream that’s soft, smooth and gently perfumed with cinnamon. Alongside, we also indulge in a walnut cake called Karydopita. I’ll admit, at first glance I thought it might be a bit dry inside, but it turns out to be the complete opposite: warm and moist with little walnut pieces giving it that satisfying crunch. On this note, our lunch wraps up and we’re suddenly so deep in the Aegean mood that ‘should we go to Greece?’ feels less like a joke and more like a plan! ✤

WARMING UP WITH SEASONAL FARE

The holidays are coming and, with the season just starting, AMS was genuinely excited to sample the festive menu at Hunters Room & Grill at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa.

The dining room at Hunters Room & Grill felt calm and understated, all dark wood, warm lighting and clean lines that gave the space a modern, earthy character. The indoor garden just beyond the glass added a soft green backdrop, making the room feel even more open. There were already diners outside when we arrived, in lively conversation.

We were delighted by the sight of the open glass kitchen, where flames flickered hypnotically from the grill, promising culinary delights in the making.

Starters

We were there to try the festive menu, available throughout the December holiday period, and we immediately felt the seasonal vibe. The evening began with fresh, warm bread with either herb butter or a livelier chilli butter. Who doesn't love freshly baked bread straight from the oven with butter?

We started with a sumptuous roasted chestnut and parsnip soup, a velvety blend of deliciousness with crispy beef chicharron adding surprising crunch and contrast. Alongside it, was a delicate beef carpaccio with truffle oil, presented in thin slices perfumed lightly with truffle and lifted by shaved parmesan. The brioche toast brought a gentle sweetness and a crisp edge that paired beautifully with the unctuous soup.

As we were finishing our starters, more guests drifted in. The atmosphere settled into a warm hum, helped in no small part by the team on the floor. Anna, in particular, set the tone: warm, poised and effortlessly attentive. She went about her job with

an assurance that made guests feel both welcomed and well looked after. Her ease with diners, her quick understanding of what each table needed, and her ability to maintain a relaxed, polished rhythm throughout the evening lifted the entire service.

Mains

The festive grilled striploin arrived first among the mains. Cooked exactly as we had asked, it was juicy, well seasoned and confidently simple. The mashed potato we chose alongside it was smooth and buttery, the kind of classic comfort that anchored the plate and let the quality of the beef speak for itself. It was this dish, the striploin, that ultimately became the standout of the entire meal for us. Its straightforward presentation allowed the flavour and tenderness of the beef to shine, and the balance between seasoning, texture and technique made it the plate we kept talking about long after the meal had ended. Weeks later and we are still talking about the steak we had at Hunters. The mint and herb-marinated lamb chops brought a different sort of richness. The chops were nicely charred on the outside and tender within, carrying rosemary, thyme and garlic in a way that felt fragrant rather than heavy. The cranberry-mint relish on top cut through the fat with a bright, sharp sweetness, giving each bite a lift that kept the dish feeling lively. The roasted chicken with coconut glaze continued the contrasts. The saffron and ginger marinade gave the chicken a gentle warmth, while the coconut glaze added a soft sweetness that wrapped around the spices instead of hiding them. The roasted vegetables served with it were colourful and properly cooked, adding an earthy balance and making the plate feel generous and homely.

DUAL DINING DONE RIGHT

Sirine Boudjadi drops by Mr. Tailor Steakhouse to see what happens when a kitchen famous for its cuts decides to do sushi as well. Turns out, ambition pays off.

Sushi night or steak night? Honestly, why is this still a debate? At Mr. Tailor Steakhouse inside the Rixos Gulf Hotel Doha, the answer is simply: have both and thank us later. Every Thursday, the restaurant turns the evening into a double act: sushi meets steak, no choosing required. Curious to see how this unlikely duo actually plays out, I step inside, and the place wastes no time setting the tone with gold accents and a sharp black-and-white floor pattern. The dry-age fridges gleam like museum displays, with racks of ribeye and Tomahawk hanging. Around them, the room mixes glamour with an easy kind of comfort: deep green leather banquettes, dark marble tables, warm golden lighting and a subtle soundtrack of clinking glasses… occasionally interrupted by a cellist in a red gown performing live, because why not add a little movie-scene energy to dinner?

The Warm-Up Act

Mr. Tailor Steakhouse doesn’t ease you into anything, it gets straight to the point. The first thing that hits the table is a homemade brioche, and honestly, calling it bread feels like an understatement. It sits there like a golden, rippled block of temptation, all shiny layers and buttery swirls. Pull it apart and it gives with a gentle crunch, releasing that savoury smell that says very clearly: ‘you’re in for a good night’. Along with it are three butters: the seaweed one brings a clean, salty pop; the dried tomato has more attitude, a deeper, slightly sweet kick that melts beautifully into the brioche’s flaky folds. And the plain salted? Smooth, rich, creamy and proof that simplicity can still win the room.

Our starters also do a pretty good job of setting the pace. Everything comes out sharing-style, so the table gets lively fast. The Truffle Edamame is warm, fragrant, with just enough truffle. Then, the Beef Tataki: thin slices with a smoky edge, topped with crunchy vegetables and a ponzu that wakes everything up a little. It disappears suspiciously quickly, which is usually a good sign. Somewhere between all this, the Asian green salad balances things out: crisp, light, a bright line of acidity. The sushi selection slots in naturally. California roll, spicy tuna roll, salmon nigiri, avocado-cucumber… Nothing experimental, nothing dramatic, but very well done.

A Knife, A Vibe, A Moment

Before the meat even thinks about showing up, there’s the ‘knife moment’, a little ritual that’s part theatre, part ego test. A leather roll is unbuttoned and opened with the same gravitas someone might use for presenting diamonds, except here, it’s a line-up of knives. Same silhouette, same heft… but the handles? That’s where the personality kicks in. Out of all the options, I reach for the blueand-white swirl, the dramatic one, the handle that says ‘I’m here to enjoy myself’. Then the main act shows up: your chosen cut, whether it’s the Angus ribeye kissed with yuzu, the filet mignon with soy and ginger juice or those wagyu skewers served with garlic and soy butter, comes toward the table on a smoking hot plate. My steak arrives glossy and deeply charred, those dark grill lines telling me it had exactly the time it needed on the heat. As for the sides, they land family-style, but let’s be honest, none of them feel like supporting roles. Garlic fried rice that smells like I

should not be sharing it with anyone, sesame broccoli and the sweet potato karaage, lightly sweet and addictive.

Our meal wraps up with a two-track dessert situation. The Mango Mochi brings the brightness: cool, chewy, sitting on coconut cream that tastes like it was made for a beach view. Then the Chocolate Miso Brownie joins in, rich and glossy, topped with just enough vanilla ice cream to soften the edges. One is fresh, one is decadent; together they’re a very polite way of saying: ‘hope you weren’t planning on skipping dessert’. ✤

PARIS, BUT MAKE IT WEST BAY

Sirine Boudjadi stops by La Maison De L’Entrecôte to see if Doha really can pull off ‘Paris in West Bay’. Spoiler: the décor says yes, the steak screams absolutely.

Experience the taste of Paris in Doha’: that’s what the Instagram bio of La Maison De L’Entrecôte promises, and, to be fair, it delivers. Hidden inside Le Méridien City Center Doha, right in the heart of West Bay, the place somehow pulls off the smartest little teleportation trick. One step in and you’re suddenly in a Boulevard Saint-Germain brasserie: red leather booths, green velvet banquettes, round gingham-topped tables, classic iron chairs. Doha’s buildings stand right outside the windows, but inside, it’s all warm light and unmistakable French charm.

The One And Only Entrecôte

If there’s one thing you need to know about the restaurant, it’s this: everything revolves around one legendary dish. The entrecôte. The icon. The classic that Paris made famous and Doha has fully adopted. The concept is beautifully simple. No endless menu, no hesitation, no “what should I order?” stress. You’re here for the steak. Full stop.

Here’s what it looks like: thin slices of trimmed entrecôte served on a shiny silver platter, resting in the restaurant's iconic secret sauce. If the word ‘secret’ makes you nervous, don’t worry. Before anything even reaches the table, the team checks for allergies to make sure you can actually enjoy the star of the show. They’ll never share the full recipe (obviously), but we did manage to pick up a few hints here and there. Butter, basil, tarragon, shallots, black pepper, nutmeg… I’m not saying these are all the

ingredients. I’m not saying they’re in the ‘official’ order. But you get the idea: it’s herby, buttery, warm and addictive. The steak itself is cooked exactly the way we asked, still juicy and tender, with those perfect grill marks. Because it’s served already sliced, every piece gets its fair share of sauce. No dry bites, no guessing, no fighting with your knife. It’s a simple dish, almost minimalist, but that’s exactly why it works. On the side, things stay beautifully classic: the signature green salad with crunchy walnuts for a fresh reset and, of course, a generous pile of skinny, golden fries. I tell myself I’ll take it easy… and then absolutely don’t.

Meet The Entrecôte’s Rebel Cousin

For the truly hardcore food lovers among you, the ones who read ‘signature dish’ and immediately wonder what else the kitchen can do with it, there’s a new special twist on the classic: the Smash Burger. It’s basically the entrecôte’s more indulgent, slightly chaotic alter ego. Instead of neat slices, you get a smashseared entrecôte striploin patty tucked inside a soft brioche bun, the restaurant’s logo branded right on top like a little promise of what’s coming. Inside, it’s pure comfort: melted Emmental, a swipe of cream cheese for that extra richness, crunchy pickles and, of course, the famous signature sauce making another star appearance. Juicy, messy, satisfying in that “don’t-talk-to-meI’m-eating” way. If the entrecôte is the legend, this burger is the fun, guilty-pleasure remix. Perfect for anyone who wants all the flavour… with a little extra attitude.

Not a big beef person? No worries, La Maison De L’Entrecôte has clearly thought of everyone. Alongside the signature steak and the indulgent smash burger, they’ve added two alternatives: a grilled chicken supreme and a seabass fillet, both served exactly the same way. So now you officially have zero excuses not to walk in with your meat-obsessed friends!

The Sweet Ending

I’m not saying this because I’m French (I mean, maybe a little) but it is a fact: France is the country of pastries. And at La Maison De l’Entrecôte, all the classics are there, some even with a fun little twist. We kick things off with the Tarte au Citron Meringuée: a vanilla sponge base, lemon custard, a swirl of brûléed meringue on top and a drizzle of vanilla sauce. Then comes the Mille-Feuille Revisité, all crisp layers and silky vanilla cream, delivered with a tiny cocoa Eiffel Tower on the plate (because if you’re already going Parisian, you might as well go all in). Other options include Profiteroles au Chocolat and the famous Vacherin with meringue, vanilla and praline ice cream, hot chocolate sauce and whipped cream. Très gourmand, as it should be. ✤

BREATHING ART AND HERITAGE IN A UNIQUE STAY

One of the newest addresses in Qatar, Andaz Doha, offers more than just hotel accommodation, as Fernanda Langhammer had the pleasure of experiencing during her staycation at this edgy property.

Andaz is a luxury lifestyle hotel brand, owned by Hyatt Hotels Corporation, that opened its first property in Qatar this year. Its name derives from the Hindi word for personal style, which aligns perfectly with the hotel's motto: integrating local culture and aesthetics with a touch of contemporary luxury.

This vibe can be felt as soon as you step into the lobby. The décor is a mix of Arabic textiles and visuals with modern, colourful art. On the ceiling, an eye-catching canopy with a design that alludes to Qatar's traditional craft of Sadu weaving. The colour palette incorporates gold, red, purple, bronze and maroon, showcasing the region's wealth and the Qatari flag. Art pieces can be spotted everywhere, and one could spend several minutes simply absorbing the authenticity of the place.

My check-in went smoothly, but before heading to my room, I peeked at the Andaz Lounge, located across from the reception area. The space is open to everyone and offers comfortable seating, from sofas to stools, as well as a large dining table at the centre of the lounge for impromptu meetings. Coffee, tea, water and biscuits are available. How great is it to have a concept like that? I loved it.

Where Dreams Happen

My Andaz Suite was located on the 18th floor. As you can probably imagine, it had fantastic views of the sea and the busy city below. With floor-to-ceiling windows, the suite was divided into a living area and a bedroom – I felt like a very spoilt girl – with plenty of space to place my belongings and enjoy peaceful moments.

The corridor wall leading to the living space was covered in black-and-white photographs of local people, with a twist: their clothes were covered in a collage of vibrant patterns, creating unique portraits – local, fun and aesthetically appealing. The red coffee table was filled with sweet treats and fruits and matched the burgundy sofa for a funky look, while a grey carpet and dark tiled floors added balance to the vibrant décor.

The bedroom had a comfortable king bed with an attached bathroom that was massive with an imposing freestanding tub. There was a rain shower that blinked red, blue and green colours for one of the best showers I have ever experienced – a fluffy robe afterwards made it even better. The two-sink cabinet was spacious, a feature that I loved. Lots of space for my many vanity bags and beauty products.

Where Relaxation and Fun Meet

During my stay, I had the chance to embark on a signature treatment at Alara Spa: the Elemental Alara Journey. The sensorial experience involves the four elements: Earth, Air, Water and Fire. The journey started with 10 minutes in the steam room, followed by mud covering my body (Earth), an inhalation of aromatic vapour infused with lemongrass oil (Air), warm compresses and wave sounds (Water), which my therapist recreated by placing a cloth on my

head and rhythmically moving her arms and hands over it, and ended with a hot stone massage (Fire). The whole journey was extremely relaxing, and after the 120-minute therapy, all I wanted was to keep the calming vibe going, so I headed to the pool.

The outdoor pool has a vibrant setup. The walls are covered with abstract paintings of men and women in local attire, set against colourful backgrounds. The loungers surrounding the pool are incredibly comfortable, and there's a separate area after the pool filled with sofas if you just want to sit and chill. A bar at the centre of the outdoor area serves drinks and snacks, and the upbeat music complements the space's good vibe. I was in the company of my book and didn't see the time pass, such an enjoyable moment with myself. The pool water is temperature-controlled, so I went for a couple of dips to refresh my soul. After a few hours, I was really having a good time, but the day was ending, so I headed back to my room. But before, I stopped at the Fitness Center, which is fully set up with Technogym equipment, ranging from cardiovascular machinery to weight training and best of all? Guests have access to it 24 hours a day – great for those suffering from jet lag or who wake up in the middle of the night, eager for a walk.

Where Food is Delish

Breakfast is at Mr. & Mrs Hawker, which also serves a Singaporean-inspired lunch and dinner. The space is beautifully decorated with Asian features and decorative items that transport you to that rich region. The buffet offers an array of items, from pastries and cold cuts to Arabic staples. But if you want something freshly made, there is a menu offering all sorts of egg preparations, as well as signature dishes such as Hummus Royale, creamy hummus with poached eggs, and Shakshuka, which is very popular in the Middle East. I stuck to the fluffy egg-white omelette, but tried something new: Kunafa Croissant. It was absolutely delicious! I had never seen a croissant with this kind of twist; it was soft and crunchy, and I really loved it, all accompanied by freshly brewed black coffee. Couldn't ask for a better start to my day.

Dinner was at The Salt Road, a restaurant dedicated to internationally inspired dishes crafted with South African techniques, where grills and a Josper oven are at the centre of the eatery. Founded by Craig Cormack and Beau du Toit, each creation is elevated by selected salts. At the entrance of the restaurant, salts from all over the world welcome you. Samples from places such as Mozambique, Germany, Scotland and France, among many others, comprise the collection. I had the pleasure of meeting Craig at a culinary event last year where he presented his passion for this simple ingredient and educated me about the variety of this mineral – I had thought salt was the same everywhere. The dining journey started with a beautiful, warm loaf of bread that we topped with butter and received three types of salt to eat it with: Nala Namak (known for its sulfur note, with an eggy flavour), Black Salt from Hawaii and Baleni

Salt (hand-harvested salt from a geothermal spring in South Africa). How many times has salt been at the centre of your meal experience? My dining companion and I were delighted. We then tried grilled asparagus and leeks, which were smoky and delicious. For mains, I had the grilled prawns in seaweed reduction, and my colleague opted for the USA tenderloin, bathed in an interesting twist: slaphakskeentjies sauce. This dish (with a tongue-twister name) is a traditional South African staple made with baby onions cooked until soft and served in a tangy, sweet-sour mustard sauce. Both mains were cooked to perfection and had their unique flavours. Chef Calum, in charge of The Salt Road Doha kitchen, knows precisely what he's doing – thank you, chef!

As if my stay couldn't get any better, I enjoyed a Liquid Brunch at Mumble Jungle, a stunning rooftop spot with Afro-Cuban décor and vibes. I enjoyed refreshing drinks accompanied by crunchy Chips de Mandioca, fried yuca with guacamole dip, and Croquettes de Marisco, delicious fried balls with aioli dip, how fab is that? The inviting atmosphere, views of the city below and the sea on the horizon made this end of the day memorable. It is definitely the place to be in the cooler season – a destination that I am sure will win the hearts of many people living in Doha.

Where Coming Back is a Must

Andaz Doha offers an exciting break to escape your routine and embark on an extraordinary staycation – you will feel like you are unplugging from everyday worries while enjoying marvellous food. A pampering session at Alara Spa and relaxing moments by the pool will recharge your energy in this scenario where heritage is enhanced by contemporary touches. I left with a feeling of renewed vitality in all senses. It’s your turn to try it out now. ✤

EUROPE’S COOLEST SKI SPOTS

If you fancy swapping warm shores for winter peaks this month, then Europe’s ski season is calling with that irresistible blend of crisp air, mountain views and cosy evenings. Whether you’re skiing pristine pistes, wandering through storybook villages or indulging in the après-ski, these snowy destinations have all the ingredients for a magical winter escape.

COURCHEVEL, FRANCE

Set in France’s Les Trois Vallées, the world’s largest interconnected ski area, Courchevel is the definition of Alpine luxury. Made up of six villages, Courchevel 1850 is the most iconic, with Michelin-starred dining, designer boutiques and five-star chalets. You’ll find celebrities on the chairlifts and bubbly flowing at slope-side bars, but beneath the glitz lies a resort designed for pure skiing pleasure. Linked with Méribel and Val Thorens by 600km of meticulously maintained runs, Courchevel offers endless variety for all levels and its north-facing slopes guarantee excellent snow cover. Adventure seekers can try snowshoeing or a hot-air balloon ride for unbeatable views of Mont Blanc. For a quieter vibe, Courchevel Moriond, Le Praz and Courchevel Village offer a more relaxed, family-friendly feel, all linked by modern lifts that make it easy to ski between villages. You can spend the morning conquering the steep couloirs (off-piste gullies) of the Saulire peak and the afternoon relaxing in the spa at Aquamotion (Europe’s largest mountain water park). Off the slopes, the après-ski scene is a world unto itself. Dine at the three Michelin-starred Le 1947 à Cheval Blanc, stroll through the glittering high street or end the day by a log fire with a chocolat viennois (hot chocolate with cream). The food scene is practically unrivalled in the mountains – expect everything from traditional Savoyard truffle fondue and gourmet raclette to tarte aux myrtilles (blueberry tart). For all its pomp and pizzazz, Courchevel still retains an unmistakable Alpine soul. You’ll be wowed by the prestige but it’s the easy rhythm of the slopes and perfectly groomed pistes that will keep you coming back.

ZERMATT, SWITZERLAND

If perfection had a postcode, it would probably be Zermatt. Dominated by the unmistakable pyramid of the Matterhorn mountain, this car-free village has an almost cinematic beauty – all wooden chalets, horsedrawn carriages and the smell of melted cheese wafting from fondue restaurants. But behind the fairytale charm lies one of the world’s most impressive ski areas. With 360km of pistes and year-round snow on the Theodul Glacier, it’s one of the few places where you can ski from one country to another, gliding over to Italy’s Cervinia for lunch and back before sunset. The panoramas are spectacular, with sweeping vistas that make you stop mid-descent just to take it all in. For non-skiers, Zermatt still offers plenty of magic. Take the Gornergrat Railway up to 3,100m for views that look straight out of a painting, book a tobogganing and sledging experience or take a leisurely stroll through the charming village streets. Evenings are made for slow dining and good grape – think jazz bars with live music, candlelit dinners in converted chalets and steaming hot chocolate by the fire. Dining here is an art form, from mountain restaurants like Chez Vrony, serving hearty alpine fare with unbeatable views, to exquisite Valaisan cuisine at Michelin-starred Alpine Gourmet Prato Borni. And when it’s time to rest, many hotels offer rooms with floor-to-ceiling views, so you can watch the peaks turn pink at dusk. It’s not a budget trip but Zermatt isn’t about bargains; it’s about timeless beauty, Swiss precision and that feeling of being somewhere extraordinary.

GEILO, NORWAY

If the Alps feel too busy this season, head north (way north) to Geilo – Norway’s best-kept winter secret. Halfway between Oslo and Bergen, this charming Norwegian town is one of Scandinavia’s oldest ski resorts and still feels blissfully authentic. Quieter, wilder and closer to nature, the vibe here is understated and effortlessly cool, more hygge than high fashion. Geilo’s smaller scale means fewer queues and more time to actually enjoy the snow. The slopes are gentle and well-kept, perfect for beginners and families, but there’s still plenty for adrenaline seekers, including terrain parks, snow-kiting and off-piste routes with sweeping fjord views. Off the slopes, you can go sledging, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing along hundreds of kilometres of scenic trails. You can even spend an evening in a traditional Sami lavvu tent, dining on reinsdyr gryte (reindeer stew) by a crackling fire. The town itself has that quintessential Nordic cosiness – timber cabins, roaring fireplaces and friendly locals. Sustainable travel is part of Geilo’s DNA, from eco-certified hotels to restaurants serving locally sourced produce. The food is hearty and honest: fish soups, smoked salmon, waffles with cloudberry jam and cinnamon buns worth writing home about. Add in the chance of spotting the Northern Lights (if you’re lucky), and you’ve got one of Europe’s most authentic winter escapes – genuinely warm and spectacularly scenic.

LECH, AUSTRIA

Elegant, traditional and quietly glamorous, Lech is Austria’s crown jewel – a place where Alpine heritage and high style coexist beautifully. Set in the region, it shares its slopes with St. Anton, Zürs and Stuben, offering access to nearly 300km of beautifully maintained slopes. On the mountain, you’ll find wide, rolling runs ideal for intermediate skiers, heli-skiing for those craving adventure, plus some of the best off-piste trails in Europe. Try the legendary White Ring circuit – one of Europe’s most scenic ski routes – or explore the quieter corners of Oberlech, accessible only by cable car. A favourite of royals and A-listers, Lech has an understated sophistication that’s hard to find elsewhere. You’ll find five-star hotels offering world-class wellness spas and attentive service without ostentation. For something special, walk along the frozen Lech River under a sky thick with stars; the sense of peace here is magnetic. The village itself is postcard-pretty, with onion-domed churches, chalet rooftops heavy with snow and streets that glow softly after dark. The après-ski is intimate and atmospheric – enjoy a fireside drink at a familyrun inn or a mellow jazz set at a mountain bar. The food scene is excellent too, from hearty Austrian classics like kaiserschmarrn (lightly sweetened pancake) to gourmet restaurants with views across the peaks. With its mix of refinement and true Alpine character, Lech remains one of Europe’s most graceful mountain escapes. ✤

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Arriving In Style

What are your retirement plans? Travel the world, spend time with the grandkids or maybe take up a new hobby? (In our case, we’re just hoping for an early finish the day we shuffle off this mortal coil.) Whatever it is, we’re willing to bet you won’t be copying the elderly dishwasher in China’s Sichuan province who went viral on social media platform Weibo. Now, working past retirement age is not that unusual. But turning up in rubber boots, dropped off by a Bentley! Well, that’s something else entirely.

It turns out the lady in question, who has not been officially identified, doesn’t, in fact need to work. But the China Times reported that she feels bored at home and ‘my body feels uncomfortable if I don’t wash dishes for a day’. Unable to convince her mother to retire, the woman’s daughter drops her off each day in her very fancy car and picks her up again at the end of her shift. An admirable work ethic but we can think of plenty of other ways to beat the boredom.

Doggy Daft and Cat Crazy

Pet owners are a breed apart – we should know, we’re among them. But even we were a bit surprised when a press release from Nuggets & Karats popped up in our in baskets.

The luxury jewellery brand is known for its stunning handcrafted pieces but, it seems, the artisans are as much in love with their four-legged friends as we are and they’ve announced a pet jewellery collection for the holiday season. The exclusive, limited-edition ‘Nuggyz’, will be on display at Wolf & Badger (the

high-end ethical outlet), on LA’s iconic Melrose High Street, no less. And the collection features a range of 18-carat gold-plated brass letter pendants, meticulously crafted in an eye-catching gothic font and adorned with delicate floral accents. Pet owners can also express their affection by personalising their pets' collars with names or special words that hold significance. We’re not sure if this is mad or brilliant. We’re just hoping our Fido’s not getting any grand ideas!

Shaggy Dog Tale

There’s no doubt the Emerald Isle has some impressive wildlife, from otters to badgers, a whole legion of deer and plenty of seals and other marine mammals. But locals in Killaloe, County Clare, were in for a bit of a shock when an African ‘lion’ apparently turned up in their midst.

Local Forest Manager John O’Reilly told news website CorkBeo that the mystery beast had been spotted by harvesters working nearby but the sighting was at a distance and assumed to be a deer.

However, local Gardaí (police) launched an investigation after a truck driver managed to video what appeared to be a lion on the loose wandering in the woods. Armed, one assumes, with a large dose of courage and a bucketful of beef, the officers went in search of the animal only to discover the ‘lion’ was, in fact, a harmless Newfoundland dog called Mouse “with a fresh haircut”! Just goes to show, sometimes all you need to completely change your image is a trip to the salon.
