2013: What a Year! By Byron Todd, AFC President

T

ime really does fly when you are having fun. I can say that I had a great time this year traveling around the state and meeting with all the wonderful members of this Association. Our biggest challenge has always been spreading the word of what the AFC is about. We have to battle the myths that some people have because they do not know the real story. Let’s continue to do the work of talking to the new employees of our colleges and explaining to them what we are about. Yes, in the near future we will meet that goal of being 10,000 strong. The membership trend is on its way up again and we are over 8,100 and climbing thanks to a great membership conference followed by your hard work. I want to thank CoChairs Stephanie Campbell and Tom Mason and the Membership Development team for their great work. We had a very good legislative year and we were able to push back some propositions to make changes to the FRS again. We assisted in the effort to minimize the impact of reform to developmental education. We completed our second class for CCP and now all of our CCP 3 I CURRENT December 2013

courses are online. We now have a partnership with the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Florida for program delivery and possible credits from CCP. AFC has a new App for both the iPhone and Android systems. The Burst the Balloon campaign continues until we reach our goal of paying off the building. Convention 2013 was special. We had what I call a traditional convention that was filled with over 50 professional development sessions, a room full of great vendors, a very successful silent auction, a beautiful Gala, a great service project, and a closing brunch. Over the three wonderful days in Orlando, we conducted some very important business that included changing the name and responsibilities of the Retiree Commission to the Retirees of AFC. If you have never attended a Convention, you missed a very special event that only happens once a year. You missed a lot by not attending; hopefully, you can attend next year. Our theme for the convention was “Pathways, Pipelines, and Partnership” which tells the story of “The Great 28.” It tells of our colleges providing the pathway and access to higher education ...Continued on page 4
