remember my early morning drives along the North Coast more than 20 years ago, heading into work with sprawling sea views and endless fields of sugar cane stretching out around me. Back then, going over the La Mercy bridge and past Umdloti felt quiet and untouched. You could see the ocean peeking through in places, but for the most part, it was just rolling green hills, trucks hauling cane, and the sense that life carried on at its own easy pace. If you had told me then that one day this same landscape would become home to a city-like precinct with schools, shopping centres, and thousands of families, I think I would have struggled to picture it.
And yet, here we are. Sibaya has risen from those cane fields and is now one of the most ambitious and connected developments in South Africa. It is remarkable to see how quickly it has grown from an idea on paper to a living, breathing community, and it is only one piece of a much larger story.
That is why this annual development focus is one of my favourites. I feel it gives us a chance to stop and take stock of just how much has changed in and around Umhlanga. Sibaya may be the headline, but it sits alongside many other developments shaping our daily lives, where new estates are welcoming families, retail centres are buzzing, and infrastructure is changing the way we move through our suburbs and nodes.
What strikes me most is that all of this growth is not happening in isolation; it is being driven by brave, pioneering
individuals who passionately believe in this coastline and see its potential. They are the ones willing to take on the challenge and the risk, creating neighbourhoods that reflect how people want to live, whilst also designing spaces with schools, healthcare, and lifestyle amenities that will serve future generations.
As this growth continues, we also need to be mindful of protecting the essence of Umhlanga, the very character that has drawn so many people here in the first place. A community is more than its buildings and roads; it is shaped by the way we live together and the values we uphold. Each of us is a custodian of that spirit. If we embrace growth in a way that is considerate and inclusive, the result will be a place that continues to feel special for everyone who calls it home. To paraphrase Spider-Man, ‘with great growth comes great responsibility’.
So, as you page through this edition, I encourage you to think about your own memories of what this area once looked like and reflect on how different it is today. Then look ahead with anticipation to the next decade. The change we are living through is extraordinary, and we are fortunate to call this place home at such an exciting time.
Enjoy the read.

WORDS WILDTRUST
Many of us hold fond memories of the ocean, family trips to Durban’s warm beaches in December, and the thrill of discovering unique and wonderful creatures along rocky shores. But beneath this blue blanket lies an ocean system buckling under immense human-caused pressures: marine species populations pushed to the brink of extinction, plastic pollution, and a climate crisis destroying delicate habitats.
Yet, amidst these challenges, a growing tide of ocean advocates, scientists, and change-makers is rising, determined to fight for the health of our ocean and, ultimately, our planet. Amongst them are the young champions of WILDTRUST’s Future Leaders Initiative (FLI) - the next wave of ocean ambassadors.
Our initiative supports youth across four interconnected streams: the Ocean Stewards Project, youth-led and driven policy work, advocacy and campaigns, and a partnership with the Youth Employment Services (YES).
Youth-led groups such as Youth 4 Marine Protected Areas (Youth4MPAs) and Justice 4 Jaws are where advocacy meets action. These groups organise awareness and educational activities, workshops, and campaigns centred around endangered species and MPAs. With over 580 members and a reach of more than 10,000 people each year, they are building a national youth movement for ocean justice. Through YES, more than 1,000 young South Africans have gained practical, mentored experience in conservation,
community engagement, and organisational work this year alone. Each placement offers more than just income support - it builds skills, confidence, and a pathway into the green and blue economy.
The Policy, Advocacy, and Campaigns stream prepares youth to step confidently into decisionmaking spaces. From COP28 to the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) held in June 2025, young leaders have represented South Africa on global stages, co-authored the Draft 30x30 Youth Action Plan, and contributed to legal victories for endangered species.
The ocean may be in crisis, and the negative issues surrounding it can sometimes be very disheartening, but these young leaders are turning the tide.
WILDTRUST’s Future Leaders Initiative is made possible with the generous support of our funders, including the Blue Action Fund and the Rainforest Trust.

A new place to discover, Moderna offers more than just a meal—it’s a place to unwind, savour artisanal dishes, and enjoy a relaxed, welcoming space where every visit feels effortless and inviting.
Inspired by the idyllic Mediterranean, Moderna brings the vibrant flavours of Italian, Portuguese, and Greek cuisine to Umhlanga. Combining modern design elements with a warm and friendly atmosphere to create your new favourite spot. Using a contemporary aesthetic and airy layout, they incorporated natural textures and coastal tones to give the space a rustic charm. They essentially borrowed elements from eateries along the Mediterranean coast and reimagined it for the urban chic setting of the area and their location, Gateway Theatre of Shopping. The idea is not just to have another place to eat in between shopping, but somewhere to relax and unwind.
Whether visiting or residing in Umhlanga, there’s a variety of people always moving through the area. Adapting to and catering for this dynamic population is one of the restaurant’s objectives, and through their diverse menu offering, every palate and preference is catered to. Locals, tourists, families, and business professionals—all who frequent the area—can find a place here. Moderna presents high-quality food with good service and a relaxed atmosphere, which further adds to the charm and sense of belonging once there.
The open-style kitchen allows patrons to catch a sneak peek into what goes into making these delicious meals. This way, people can engage with staff and chefs, which creates a communal space where everyone feels welcome as part of an
interactive experience. It’s not just sitting down for a meal; it’s a holistic event, indulging all your senses. Whatever the occasion, a catch-up session with friends, a couple celebrating a milestone, family members seeing each other for the first time in years, or sealing a business deal over coffee, Moderna is there to accommodate you.
The menu, like the design of the restaurant, is crafted for a laid-back visit—a temporary reprieve from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Artisanal pizzas made in an authentic wood oven are easily a standout favourite on the menu, with crispy bases and generous toppings.
The quality of ingredients they use shines through every dish: the pastas, mezze boards, and even the deli sandwiches. The fusion of different and complementing cuisines makes Moderna a unique addition to the lively culinary scene in Umhlanga, a place people can return to. They are also working on exciting daily specials to be incorporated soon, bringing something different for patrons to enjoy every day.
From European sweets to fresh vibrant meals and everything in between, it’s a place people can unplug from the busy world around them while enjoying delicious food in a comfortable setting.
A prime example of connecting communities to live, work & play.

Abold urban story is unfolding between uMhlanga and Ballito, The Sibaya Precinct, one of South Africa’s best-performing mixed-use coastal developments.
Spanning over 1,000 hectares of prime land, this area has been masterplanned for sustainable living, working, shopping, and leisure, whilst 60% of its land is preserved as green spaces. Sibaya offers a rare combination of natural beauty and modern urban convenience, allowing residents to connect with nature whilst enjoying all the amenities of city life. Devmco Group’s vision is to curate this into KZN’s premium coastal city in the forest.
The precinct’s journey began nearly a decade ago, with the first sod turned in 2016. Since then, Sibaya has steadily
From its first groundbreaking to its transformation into a connected, multi-use city, Sibaya is moving from blueprint to benchmark.
evolved from blueprint to reality, attracting billions in investment and emerging as one of the North Coast’s most vibrant property nodes. Devmco Group, the precinct’s master developer, has consistently expanded its offerings, ensuring each milestone aligns with the long-term vision of a selfsustaining, connected urban destination.
Sibaya’s growth has been defined by landmark projects that offer investors unparalleled opportunities along KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast. At the heart of the precinct is a vibrant mixed-use hub seamlessly combining residential, retail, and leisure offerings. Salta Sibaya introduces retirement living with modern apartments integrated with healthcare and wellness facilities, while OceanDune Sibaya offers sleek ocean-view apartments
for professionals, Pebble Beach delivers a family-focused resort lifestyle, and the thriving Gold Coast Estate has already proven its market appeal.
With over R8 billion in development value to date and an additional R5 billion due to be invested, Sibaya is far more than a collection of properties; it is a fully integrated, world-class coastal ecosystem, delivering long-term growth and lifestyle appeal. Looking ahead, the precinct’s key nodes unlock significant potential with Node 1 strengthening the gateway with strategic infrastructure and connectivity; Node 5 expanding on residential and lifestyle offerings; Node 6, known as Salta, broadening retail and lifestyle amenities; and Node 7 introducing high-value, integrated developments that connect and unify the entire precinct.
What makes Sibaya unique is its ability to cater to every lifestyle. Young professionals and frequent travellers benefit from low-maintenance apartments with ocean views. Families thrive in Pebble Beach, Gold Coast Estate, and Salta Sibaya, enjoying freestanding homes, play areas, and resort-style amenities. Retirees are drawn to Shoreline Sibaya and Capri Village for secure, wellness-integrated living, while investors and holidaymakers value the precinct’s coastal location and strong rental demand. By addressing these varied needs, Sibaya has become a multi-generational, connected community, where life, work, and leisure intersect seamlessly.
The New Wave Ahead
June 2025 marked a defining chapter with
the launch of Sibaya Coastal precinct’s managed infrastructure rollout. Pedestrian, cycling, and golf cart pathways, an underpass beneath the M27, and the widening of the M27 and the introduction of innovative tear-drop interchanges and signalised intersections. This will unlock seamless mobility across the precinct. “It’s about creating a precinct where you can live, work, shop, and play without ever needing to get into your car. This level of pedestrianisation is not something many areas within KwaZulu-Natal or even South Africa can lay claim to,” says Brad Winstanley, Commercial Director at Devmco Group.
The precinct’s next phase promises 400 new residential units, alongside 100,000m² of retail and office space, a dedicated medical node, a design district, and flagship hospitality projects. Plans are also underway for a conference and expo centre as well as a state-of-the-art Porsche automotive centre, reinforcing Sibaya’s position as a self-sustaining urban hub. Innovative office offerings allow businesses to purchase spaces ranging from 100 m² to 1,000 m², which will be integrated with transport, parks, and retail amenities—a testament to Sibaya’s forward-thinking urban design. Development is underway on a lifestyle shopping centre, tenanted by premium brands, as well as a stand-alone flagship Hertex showroom in the precinct.
Sibaya has already created thousands of construction jobs, with permanent employment opportunities growing as retail, healthcare, and hospitality facilities come online. Local businesses benefit from the rising population and visitor base, creating a sustainable economic ecosystem. Community initiatives, such as investment in schools and social programmes, highlight Sibaya’s commitment to long-term generational impact.
For Devmco, Sibaya is about more than short-term returns. “This isn’t a short-term investment strategy, it’s a generational vision,” explains Winstanley. From its first groundbreaking to its transformation into a connected, multi-use city, Sibaya is moving from blueprint to benchmark. With infrastructure underway, new developments on the horizon, and an unwavering focus on community, the precinct is going to change coastal living along the KZN North Coast, leaving a lasting legacy of sustainable urban growth.

The Wright sisters, Stacey and Debbie, are making a name for themselves with their fresh and savvy take on home staging, the art of dramatically enhancing a space to elevate its appeal. That name is Black+Wright.
WORDS ANNE SCHAUFFER
At heart, Stacey’s an artist. She’s long been transferring her intuitive sense of design and colour onto large abstract canvases to transform walls in the greater Durban area and beyond. Painting with a purpose is her happy place, and she finds it enormously satisfying to hang her artwork and watch it pull a home together in an instant.
Nine years ago, Stacey took her artistry beyond a canvas and into homes, offering her creativity in different ways: home staging. Today, joined by her younger sister Debbie, Black+Wright has created a unique sales offering for property developers, estate agents, those renting out a property, or curating an Airbnb holiday home. The sisters offer a range of related home staging services targeted at different markets and budgets, with the express goal of enhancing market appeal, maximising
the space’s potential, boosting buyers’ first impressions, and offering practical solutions to challenges. They’ve curated smart packages that allow clients to select anything from a consultation to a concept plan to full implementation of their design. Black+Wright has a bright and busy warehouse with a wide range of furnishings and fittings from which they can draw to curate the perfect story.
Who says family can’t work together? While the Black+Wright sisters bring different skills to the staging table, when you meet them, you’ll find their enthusiasm, roll-up-your-sleeves, and extra-mile philosophy are part of their DNA. For Stacey, “I love having a career in which no two days are the same! Debs and I both love people—much of our family has property backgrounds—and property is all about relationships. Whether it’s a seller, developer, or supplier of goods, we enjoy building these solid connections, then working hand-in-hand with those who see the value in home staging.”
As Debbie says, “Home staging is not as simple as ‘I have a good colour and décor
sense, so I can decorate this myself’ for the market. We look at the property with entirely different eyes. Selling or renting out a property for the best return isn’t just about listing it—it’s about making it stand out. When a prospective buyer walks inside, and immediately visualises themselves at home, they’re far more likely to purchase it.” Nobody wants a property to stay on the market for long, and well-targeted home staging is a powerful tool to assist the sale. It stands to reason, too, that there’s a strong correlation between time on the market and price drop.
Decorating is only one aspect of staging, and it’s not the starting point. The duo examines that space critically for clues as to how to visually enlarge the space, create the perfect flow from zone to zone, what textures and light fittings would enhance the light or amplify the mood, and numerous other elements born of their experience.
Their success is verified by how swiftly most of their staged properties sell … and the number of prospective owners who insist on buying the furniture and furnishings along with the unit! And often, they fall in love with the art. Stacey’s original artworks are usually commissioned by an interior designer who knows Stacey’s mastery when it comes to springboarding off the colours, textures, and mood of the space. Armed with all that sensory info, Stacey loves to head off to her studio to process and interpret the information in her own way, before creating a unique, custom-designed abstract piece for that home.
Stacey Cowden and Debbie da Canha are colleagues and sisters who work exceptionally well together, both relishing the challenges of interpreting, analysing, and brainstorming around a property, to ensure they get it Wright. Black+Wright.

With architectural integrity, prime positioning alongside top-tier schools, and landscaped green spaces that invite community connection, the estate captures the essence of Hilton’s timeless charm—while offering a secure, modern lifestyle for today’s families. “The Avenues Estate is where new memories are made, but it’s also a place that feels instantly familiar,” adds James. “It’s where parents can raise children in the kind of environment that shaped them. That’s what makes this project so special.”
Developed with purpose. Rooted in tradition. Designed for the future.

Law firms share valuable insights into their areas of expertise.
A common misconception regarding commercial lease agreements is the idea that one can evict tenants with ease from the premises when they are in default. Whilst it is true that a commercial eviction is less onerous on the landlord than an eviction from a residential property, there is still due procedure that needs to be followed, which most often takes time.
Litigation is seldom the fastest route. The process is inherently lengthy, often involving complex procedural steps, significant waiting periods for trial dates, and delays within the court system. These factors, coupled with escalating costs of litigation, can render it, in many cases, uneconomical and contrary to good business sense. At Livingston Leandy, we consider dispute resolution strategy as integral to sound risk management. We encourage clients to ensure their agreements contain well-structured

dispute resolution mechanisms tailored to the commercial realities of their industries. Well-drafted agreements should incorporate mediation and/or arbitration provisions. These mechanisms expedite dispute resolution, are more cost-effective and are better aligned with preserving commercial relationships. South African courts have recognised the value of this approach as reflected in the promotion of court-annexed mediation.
The single most effective proactive step is to obtain sound legal advice at the outset before contracts are concluded. Engage suitably skilled attorneys to ensure that agreements are carefully structured, risk is properly assessed and the parties’ intentions are clearly reflected.
Too often, we are consulted only after a dispute has escalated, when emotions are high and relationships have begun to fracture, which inevitably narrows
the options available for meaningful resolution.
This proactive approach will significantly reduce the risk of small disagreements escalating into costly disputes and also create a foundation for stronger, more sustainable business relationships.
At Livingston Leandy, we encourage our clients to have all contracts carefully drafted and/or vetted by legal experts before they are signed. All too frequently, we are approached for advice once a contract has already been entered into, and a dispute regarding its contents has arisen. At this stage, it is either too late to remedy the situation or costly and time-consuming.
We would further advise clients not to equate the value of a contract with its length and/or complexity. A simple, well-drafted, clear, and concise contract that contains all of the essential elements and protections will always be preferable to a complex document, which invariably leads to issues with interpretation and application.

is a boutique KZN law firm with offices in Umhlanga, Ballito, and the Midlands. Specialising in conveyancing and deceased estates, they blend speed and accuracy with a peoplefirst approach, ensuring clients feel supported through complex legal processes.
As conveyancers, our role is twofold: ensuring the legal requirements are met so the transfer is valid and binding, and guiding our clients through each step, so they never feel lost. We explain the paperwork in plain language, keep communication lines open with regular updates, and handle the behind-the-scenes complexities with efficiency.
That way, our clients can focus on the excitement of buying or selling their property, one of life’s biggest milestones. Being part of that journey is what drives us.
A common belief is that buying into a gated estate automatically comes with hefty monthly expenses. While there is some truth to this, the costs are often well worth it. Monthly fees typically cover a wide range of benefits, from 24-hour security and beautifully maintained common areas to exclusive resident amenities—making life more convenient, secure, and enjoyable.
Preparation is everything. Have your FICA documents handy, prepare for compliance certificates (electrical, borer, gas, etc.), and have your water/electricity meter
readings ready from the start. If there’s a bond over your property, place notice of your intention to sell with your bank early. These small steps can shave weeks off the process and help us get your transfer registered at the Deeds Office much faster.
Do your homework before signing. Buyers should check the developer’s track record, expected completion timelines, and all that is included in the purchase price: from finishes and fittings to landscaping. It’s also crucial to review clauses relating to delays, levies, and defect rectification. Having a conveyancer review the agreement upfront can save you major headaches later.
The film industry would have us believe an executor’s role is to gather the family, read the will, and dish out inheritances to the heirs. In truth, the executor carries significant legal and administrative responsibilities.
These include reporting the estate to the Master of the High Court, preparing an inventory of assets, closing bank accounts, paying creditors, obtaining tax clearance, and only then distributing what remains to beneficiaries. Executors are accountable to the Master, creditors and heirs, which makes the process far more complex
than most anticipate. It’s a time-consuming role requiring diligence, perseverance, and patience.
A valid will is essential, but it doesn’t guarantee a simple process once someone has passed away. Winding up an estate in South Africa involves multiple steps regulated by the Administration of Estates Act. Executors must notify creditors, settle debts, calculate estate duty if applicable, and obtain a tax clearance certificate from SARS.
Disagreements between heirs, missing documents, or unclear bequests can also create delays. Even straightforward estates
can take 6-12 months to finalise due to backlogs at the banks and the Master’s Office. The reality is that while a will provides direction, the estate process is detailed, time-consuming, and can be unexpectedly challenging. A common misconception with a will is that you can simply write your wishes on a piece of paper, sign it, and that's that. It is so important to consult with a legal professional when drafting a will since the omission of the appointment of an executor or waiver of security in a will can be costly to the estate. It is also important to draft your will in a way that you do not leave specific amounts of money to family or friends when such funds are not available; it could lead to property and other assets having to be sold and cause further delays in the administration of the estate.
Executors frequently encounter delays due to overlooked paperwork or assets. Common examples include retirement annuities, life policies not properly nominated, digital assets like online banking or cryptocurrency accounts, vehicle registrations and loan agreements between family members. Even small details, such as outstanding utility bills or municipal rates accounts, can stall progress if not addressed. Access to safe deposit boxes or investments held abroad may also complicate administration. To avoid unnecessary holdups, it’s best for individuals to keep an updated file of all financial accounts, policies, and obligations for easy reference when the time comes.
My advice is to recognise that being an executor is a legal appointment, not just a family duty, and you are personally accountable to the Master of the High Court and SARS. The process can be overwhelming and onerous, so seek professional guidance from an attorney or estate administrator early on. With proper support, even a first-time executor can navigate the process with confidence and care.

Vishen Pillay: There are a few, but one of the most common misconceptions inventors have about patents is that they can go back and patent their inventions once they have disclosed them publicly or without confidentiality/non-disclosure agreements. There are certain exceptions, but in most cases, an invention is required to be kept strictly confidential until a patent application is filed for it. The only person you should be telling about your invention is your patent attorney!
Amina Suliman: As soon as an inventor
has a concrete invention that can be fully described in a manner such that someone skilled in the field could make and use it and achieve similar results, then they should be ready to file a patent application. One does not know what other people are working on around the world. In general, the sooner one files a patent application, the better.
Udi Pillay: IP is territorial in nature. This means that your rights only apply in the country in which protection is granted. Should a local business wish to expand beyond South Africa, we recommend
conducting searches and, if possible, registering the IP in the relevant countries in order to adequately protect its rights.
Nishi Chetty: As a first step, the entrepreneur should conduct preliminary searches and research on various platforms to check if any third parties are using the same or a similar mark in relation to the goods/services of interest. Once completed, we may then assist with a trademark availability search at the Trade Marks Office.

Most people are surprised at the transfer costs when purchasing a property. The biggest misconception is that all of those costs are the attorney’s fees.
Here’s how it really works:
• Transfer duty: This is a tax that goes to SARS on properties above a certain value
• Transfer fees: This is the conveyancer’s professional fee, which is set according to the Legal Practice Council’s tariff (so it’s the same no matter which firm you use)
• Bond registration costs: Payable if you’re taking out a home loan
• Municipal rates and clearance costs: These go to the municipality to ensure the property’s account is settled before transfer
Because everything is paid at once, it may seem like one big bill from the lawyer, but really, the conveyancer is just collecting and paying these amounts on your behalf to ensure the transfer is handled safely and correctly.
Thinking you can sell it or start advertising it straight away. A common mistake.
Nothing can be done with the property until the Master of the High Court issues a Letter of Executorship and an executor is officially appointed.
The executor is the only person who has the legal authority to deal with the property, whether that means signing a sale agreement or transferring it into someone’s name. If heirs try to sell or market the property before that step, it can cause delays and even deem agreements invalid.
The safest way forward is to wait until the Executor is appointed and then work through them to make sure everything runs smoothly and legally.
A deeds office search is basically a background check on the property and its owner, and it can reveal a lot of information that you wouldn’t necessarily see just by looking at the property itself.
For example, a deeds search can show:
• Who the registered owner is, confirming that the seller is, in fact, the rightful owner
• If there are any bonds or loans registered over the property
Bio: Wimble Attorneys, with offices in Umhlanga and Ballito, specialises in property law and conveyancing. They’re passionate about guiding clients through buying and selling homes with clarity, care, and professionalism—making the process smooth, stress-free, and always centred on people.
• If there are servitudes or restrictions on the property (like a right of way or a building line restriction)
• The purchase history, the last sold date, and the rate
This information is crucial because it protects both buyers and sellers from surprises later in the process. Without it, you could end up in a situation where you’ve agreed to buy a property that has hidden complications or restrictions that limit what you can do with the land.
Get organised early and know what to expect. A few simple steps can make the transfer process much smoother:
• Have your finances in order: Make sure your bond is pre-approved and that you’ve budgeted for all the costs (transfer duty, attorney’s fees, bond costs, and municipal charges)
• Respond quickly: When your conveyancer requests documents (like FICA documents or proof of payment), send them through as soon as possible. Delays often come from waiting on paperwork
• Stay in touch: Ask questions. The more you understand each step, the less stressful the process will be
• Plan for timelines: Transfers usually take 8-12 weeks, so avoid big moving plans too soon
Buying your first home is exciting, and with the right preparation and guidance from an attorney, the process can be far less daunting.

Incorporated is a specialist conveyancing, notarial, and property law firm that was founded 15 years ago by Annabelle da Costa. With five branches in KZN, the company has become the preferred professional property law partner for many largescale and smaller agencies alike. Vanessa Williams, an Attorney, Conveyancer and Notary Public from the Mount Edgecombe Branch breaks down some of the biggest misconceptions about sectional title schemes.
Homeowners are often under the impression that when extending their unit or, for example, enclosing a patio, that only Body Corporate Consent and/or Building plans are required. They do not realise that an amending sectional plan of extension may be required, which must first be approved by a Special Resolution from the Members of the Body Corporate.
The plans must then be drafted by a Land Surveyor or Architect, approved by
the Surveyor General, and the extension registered in the Deeds Office.
The sale agreement itself, as well as the mandatory Property Disclosure Form, which is annexed to the agreement, which requires that any defects in the property be disclosed by the Seller. The Seller and Buyer may not read the fine print in the sale agreement or fully understand their respective obligations in terms of the sale agreement.
It is therefore important to contact a property specialist to run through any agreement of sale that you, as a Seller or Purchaser, may be considering entering into, before you sign the agreement, ensuring that both parties' interests are protected and that any potential pitfalls are avoided.

Litigation entails the systemic presentation of evidence to substantiate a legal argument. While often perceived as dramatic and unpredictable, it is often more of a methodical series of procedures, most of which occur behind the scenes. The evidence is presented in the form of motions, summons, and the discovery of evidence. The outcome of a case depends on how the evidence is led in conjunction with legal argument to support the client’s position. In an attempt not to overwhelm our courts, explore the resolution of a matter before reaching trial through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) processes. These processes are available to parties until a final judgement is granted; however, they can prove to be time-consuming and a delay tactic if used carelessly. Most civil cases are resolved before reaching trial, often through these ADR processes or direct negotiations.

distributing assets to beneficiaries. A will must comply with the Administration of Estates Act's requirements to be accepted by the Master of the High Court. The most common misconception is that there is no need for legal assistance. A lawyer can provide guidance and support, helping navigate the legal system effectively. This is a complex process governed by the Administration of Estates Act No. 66 of 1995. Many assume it’s a quick and simple process, but it can take months or even years, depending on the complexity of the estate. It involves legal steps like validating the will, reporting the estate to the Master of the High Court, and settling debts.
The power of a trust structure is often underestimated when it comes to protecting generational wealth. A trust is a legal arrangement in which a settlor appoints trustees to manage assets for beneficiaries. Trusts can protect family wealth by ensuring continuity of asset management and shielding assets from creditors and legal claims. Trust assets
are separate from the personal assets of beneficiaries, protecting them from potential legal claims and ensuring the seamless transfer of wealth across generations. There are different types of trusts to suit different needs.
Legal recoveries are generally seen as reactive. To avoid legal issues, businesses and individuals can take proactive measures. Businesses should implement robust credit policies and monitor accounts receivable to reduce the risk of default. Individuals can make timely payments and communicate with creditors to manage debt obligations effectively. By taking these steps, both businesses and individuals can reduce the risk of legal disputes and ensure a more stable financial future.

Meet the people whose journeys have led them back to South Africa, and the East Coast.
We moved to London in 2017 and spent eight years there to have some fun and travel. We decided to have our children there, and when our youngest was two-weeks-old, we booked our oneway flights home. Growing up in Durban, we wanted the same kind of childhood for our own boys—on the beach, barefoot, and surrounded by family. The lifestyle in South Africa and the quality of life that we have here are incomparable to what we had in London.
I grew up in Glenashley, so it definitely feels like home! Gareth spent his teenage years lifesaving on Umhlanga Beach as part of the ROX Surf Lifesaving Club. We lived in Beacon Rock, Umhlanga, before we left for London. We also wanted to educate our boys in South Africa. La Lucia is close to all of the schools we intend to
send our boys to, and it is also close to family. Our sons will actually attend some of the schools we went to, which is quite special!
We were living in Fulham, London. It was incredible for children, and our eldest son had an amazing start to life there, but it is also hard in so many ways, and it is not a place where we wanted to raise our sons. Durbs is home; there are a lot of shared values and a huge focus on family life in South Africa. We absolutely love the laidback lifestyle. We can barely believe that we were sitting on the beach in the middle of winter with temperatures as high as 25 degrees celcius on some days! The work and the school days are shorter, giving us a lot more time together as a family, which is wonderful. Most importantly, we love that our boys now spend most of their time outdoors in the sunshine.
Durbs is home; there are lots of shared values and a huge focus on family life in South Africa
We did love London—there was always something to do, and we lived right in central London—close to all the museums and galleries. But we worked relentlessly with little downtime. The weather was not great for a large chunk of the year, and during the winter months, the sun set as early as 3:30 p.m.
The development since we left is profound, with some areas barely recognisable—in a good way. It’s nice to call this home again, knowing we’re not here just for a holiday. Goodbyes are easier now, and time with family isn’t overshadowed by departure dates. We’re still finding our footing, but it feels right to be home and ready to settle, raising our boys with the positive values of South African culture.
We have been home for just over four months now. It took us about a year to decide whether to come back or not, but it has been the best decision that we have made. We feel safe, our boys are growing up surrounded by their extended family, the sun shines most days, and our quality of life has improved tenfold. We couldn’t be happier to be back, so if you are thinking about it, just do it!
With a depth of expertise and a drive for excellence that sets us apart.
After matriculating from Northwood Boys High School, my lifelong dream was to be a game ranger, especially growing up in Zululand and having spent my holidays at the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. I took a gap year to consider it. During that period, I worked in Israel, on a kibbutz (a farm) and then in Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem. Afterwards, I got a two-year working Holiday Visa in the UK. I started working in a pub in Richmond, London, where I met my wife, Severine, on my first shift! The challenge was that she is French and neither of us could understand each other for the first three months; we mostly communicated with hand signals, a dictionary, and love, of course.
Two years became eight, and we accomplished quite a lot in that time. We also visited over 30 countries. We did scuba diving in Fiji, the Australian Great Barrier Reef, and Egypt’s Red Sea, and went white water rafting in Canada. We lived in bamboo huts in Sri Lanka and Thailand. We watched the Springboks beat England at Twickenham and the Proteas win a tight five-day cricket test match at Lord's, the
I absolutely love being back and have embraced the KZN spirit. I believe we truly live in paradise here.
home of cricket. Later, we moved back to London, where we started in the IT field, of which I knew very little, but we earned very well. It was my wife who gave me the inspiration to move back. She said, “Babe, I have had enough of this UK lifestyle. We need to move to Durban or France, you choose, and you have a week!” This came as a bit of a surprise to me and was not well-timed since I had just been promoted and we were buying a second investment property. I chose Durban because I couldn't speak French, missed the weather and lifestyle, friends and family, and the good old South African gees and ubuntu.
The UK was very good to us financially. But the cold, rainy weather, indoor and pub lifestyle, the long work grind, and the crowded transport were a whole world apart from how I grew up. We returned to Durban North, my hometown.
I absolutely love being back and have embraced the KZN spirit. I believe we truly live in paradise here. Having lived, worked, and travelled to many countries, this is the best province in the world. I just love
how friendly people are. I can speak to all the people in an elevator, the lady at the toll gate, and the cashier at the till. Things like going to watch the Sharks play rugby, braaing before the game, or watching at my friend’s beach bar with a beer, wearing shorts, slops and my treasured 30-year-old Bok Jersey are priceless.
After returning to Durban, having saved up some pounds and selling both our UK properties, I was fortunate enough to be able to afford to spend some time deciding what to do with our next chapter. Having enjoyed the property sector in London, I decided to join RE/MAX Panache. I also volunteer through Ezemvelo as an honorary game ranger at Hluhluwe Game Reserve and started a group called “Bunny Chows Friday”.
What excites me about being back is that we are finding our feet together, joining hands, and putting differences aside. We are a proud, resilient, and hard-working nation. It is encouraging to see a new wave of realisation that there are problems all over the world and that the grass is not necessarily greener on the other side; to actually sit down and put a plan into action, follow your heart home, and embrace the new South Africa.
From the Museum of the Future to vibrant public spaces, Dubai blends heritage and innovation in one of the safest cities in the world.
Meet the faces behind the new buzz that is
Tucked into a onceunlikely corner space on Chartwell Drive stands a chic modular café that has quickly become one of the most talked-about new spots in town. DRNK Matcha Café isn’t just a place to grab a vibrant green latte; it’s the story of a couple who dreamed boldly, worked tirelessly, and poured every ounce of themselves into creating something fresh, modern, and inspiring.
Their “pinch-me” moment came when a massive modular container was craned into a tight space in Umhlanga Village. At first, people scoffed, calling it a shack. But with vision, grit, and help from Frans Alexander Interiors, it became a chic, Europeaninspired café that feels like it’s always belonged. Even their pups, Biscuit and Honey, inspired a mini dog-friendly nook with water bowls and pup cups.
Opening week was exciting, but it was their second Saturday that stunned them; they sold out completely. “It wasn’t just friends and family supporting us anymore,” Chey recalls. “Locals were lining up, and that was both exhilarating and terrifying.”
Matcha itself became their obsession. For a year, they researched its origins, benefits, and preparation, building relationships in South Africa and Japan to bring the best product to Durban. Will loves its slow-release energy and focus, while Chey, dealing with hormonal imbalances, found relief in matcha as a gut-friendly, skin-friendly alternative to coffee.
For William Fraser (29), the journey began when he left the corporate world behind and returned to work alongside his father at Umhlanga Medisport Pharmacy. There, he grew passionate about health and fitness through bodybuilding and knew he wanted to follow in his father’s entrepreneurial footsteps. Cheyenne Gooderson (22) brought her own spark. With experience in the UK hospitality industry and a family legacy of innovation, her grandfather founded Gooderson Leisure—she dreamed of bringing global inspiration home. “I always romanticised the idea of owning a café one day,” she says. When Chey and Will met two years ago, the connection was instant. Within days, they were inseparable, bonded by faith, ambition, and a shared dream. What started as conversations about life goals quickly grew into sketches and plans. Together, they blended their passions into DRNK Matcha.
Even the café’s name was strategic. DRNK plays on Umhlanga’s lively food and bar scene—fun, memorable, and designed to make people smile when they say, “I’m going to DRNK.”
Today, DRNK Matcha is more than a café; it’s a lifestyle. Their menu reflects their personalities: Will’s go-to is the Vanilla Swirl, a proteininspired matcha and the first of its kind in South Africa, while Chey swears by the OG, an iced Japanese matcha with coconut milk.
As they dream big about the future, one thing is certain: every cup of DRNK Matcha carries their story, a blend of passion, resilience, and the kind of love that makes anything possible.

their programmes or making significant changes to their programmes. Greece remains one of the standout European nations that still offers a fully governmentsupported residency programme, and it is by far the cheapest EU residency programme still allowed.
Looking to invest abroad and have questions about different residency programmes?
We spoke to Chris Immelman, Head of Pam Golding International to get more information on how to make your process smooth and successful.
Residency-by-Investment allows investors the opportunity to invest in real estate in a particular country and thereby earn the right to live in that country. The most popular programmes have been those securing European Residency for the investor and his or her family. “For example, if you invested €250k in a Golden Visa-approved development in Greece, then you are allowed to legally live in that country,” Chris explains. You effectively obtain a European Residency, which not only allows you to live in Greece but also allows you to travel throughout Schengen Europe without requiring visas, simply by using your EU Residency Card. Their modus operandi is to source suitable developments undertaken by experienced,
trustworthy developers that qualify for these programmes. “Our current offerings in Greece meet these requirements, having worked extensively with these developers on other projects in Greece and Portugal. This provides much needed comfort for investors wishing to take up this offer, as they are able to rely on the extensive track record of the developers.”
“We have an end-to-end solution in place, in that we have secured suitable professionals in all the jurisdictions that we work in. So whilst we do not physically assist the clients with the residency application, we do introduce them to people whom we work with in the various jurisdictions that are experts in their field, like international immigration lawyers,” says Chris. Whilst the biggest demand has been for EU residency programmes, the European Union has recently made significant changes to the EU Residency and Citizenship regulations, resulting in many countries either closing
“As a result of the tightening of the various programmes in Europe, we have been looking elsewhere at programmes that may satisfy the needs of our clients - and as such are delighted to now be able to offer the Dubai Golden Visa programme which requires an investment of AED2m (approx. US$ 500k) which secures a Dubai Golden Visa. This allows one to legally live and work in Dubai for a ten-year period” he says. “The Dubai Golden Visa is renewable after ten years, provided one still owns the property.”
“Doing thorough research and considering all options is essential and we are here to help you understand each programme and which works best for you. We think the best advice is to ensure that you have done sufficient research and use professionals whom you can trust and who have built up a track record to demonstrate their trustworthiness and competence,” Chris advises.
Having travelled extensively and building up years in experience, helping people Chris and his team are well-equipped to provide you with the best service and advice. Chris adds, “Our job is to understand the intricacies of the actual residency programme and also the underlying investment. We visit almost all of the development opportunities and make the effort to meet and get to know the developers bringing these opportunities to market.”

For many entrepreneurs, the hardest part of growing a business is raising funding to fuel and accelerate growth. That’s the strategic intent of SecureClear — a financial services firm founded by Chris van Rensburg and Gordon Rabey, two trade finance professionals who set out to change how small and medium businesses access growth funding.
Both founders had built careers in traditional banks but became frustrated with how clients were being treated. Rather than being partners in growth, business owners were often reduced to a number associated with a balance sheet. SecureClear was born from a simple idea: funding should be more personal, more supportive, and more transparent.
Trade finance typically involves banks or finance houses providing shortterm loans to cover the cost of trading goods and services. SecureClear took this established model and reshaped it with a client-first mindset, combining international best practices in private capital with local insight.
Starting a new financial services business is no small task. Raising early investment, convincing backers to believe in their vision, and securing
the licences required by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) tested the team’s resilience.
Those same hurdles now form part of their competitive advantage. SecureClear knows firsthand the pressure business owners face when cash flow is tight, and the importance of having the right partner in place. Today, the company has grown from a small start-up to a recognised FSCAaccredited financial services provider, offering the market the opportunity to invest into a registered alternative investment asset while also offering businesses a world class growth funding solution.
SecureClear operates as a hub for business finance solutions, built on three interconnected pillars:
• Finance – providing tailored trade finance funding to help businesses accelerate growth.
• Forex – offering a dedicated treasury service to manage crossborder transactions and currency exposure.
• Investment – creating avenues for investors to invest in an alternative asset class.
By integrating these services, the firm is able to offer clients not just capital, but also the tools to manage international trade and growth more effectively.
"Frustrated with how clients were being treated"
The SecureClear philosophy is simple: back entrepreneurs, not just paperwork. That means being selective about the businesses they support — focusing on those whose values align with their own commitment to integrity, sustainability, and humility. Every client is unique and considered a partner. SecureClear is backed by a combined 37 years of trade finance experience but delivered in a way that’s reminiscent of “old school banking”.
Beyond finance, Chris and Gordon are family men and active community members. They sit on local boards, support initiatives, and freely share their expertise. For them, business growth is only the beginning; the true measure lies in building a legacy of trust and nurturing entrepreneurial possibility.

WORDS BIANCA BARNARD
Have you ever realised you’ve been moving through life on autopilot— ticking off tasks, responding automatically, but barely noticing what’s happening? That’s what burnout often feels like. It’s not ordinary tiredness; it’s a deep, ongoing exhaustion that adversely impacts focus and motivation, leaving you feeling detached from both work and personal life.
Burnout usually develops when professional pressures collide with personal values and life stressors. Long hours, unclear expectations, constant demands, and unrelenting pressure at work slowly deplete energy reserves. On a personal level, qualities like high responsibility, ambition, and perfectionism are often seen as strengths; they can push us to give more than we restore. Add blurred boundaries or major life stressors, and the risk of burnout rises sharply.
Most importantly, burnout is a signal: something needs to change before it evolves into more serious mental or physical health issues.
What to look out for:
In yourself, burnout may show up as fatigue that lingers despite rest, as well as irritability, emotional
flatness, or a loss of motivation. Activities that once inspired you might now feel like chores. Cognitive changes, including difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, or struggling with simple decisions, are also common.
Recognising these signs in yourself makes it easier to notice them in others too: a friend repeatedly cancelling plans, a partner snapping over small things, or a colleague making uncharacteristic mistakes. When we notice these signs in ourselves or others, it’s important that we hold things in perspective. Burnout isn’t a personal weakness. It’s a system signal that work, lifestyle, or boundaries need recalibration.
Stepping out of autopilot:
Preventing or recovering from burnout starts with small, deliberate shifts:
• Basics first: Sleep, move, and nourish your body. Simple routines restore a sense of safety and control.
• Boundaries: Saying “no” when your capacity is stretched protects your energy and helps you show up fully when it truly matters.
• Rest & stillness: Carve out moments to breathe, stretch, or sit quietly. Techniques like grounding through the five senses or EFT tapping
(tapping specific points on the face and body while focusing on the stressor, with the goal of balancing the body's energy system and calming the stress response) can calm the nervous system to enable rest. Remember: downtime is essential, not indulgent.
• Mindful connection: Share openly with someone you trust, but check whether they have the space to listen (a simple “do you have capacity for me to vent?” goes a long way). Equally, notice when you need to self-regulate as opposed to vent, before reaching out.
• Reflect on purpose: Burnout thrives on disconnection. Revisit your “why” through reflection, faith, or spirituality. Remind yourself that your worth extends far beyond productivity.
Supporting others works similarly: notice when someone seems “off,” offer practical help, and value them for who they are, not just what they deliver.
As the year draws to a close, give yourself permission to ease out of autopilot. Life feels very different when you’re not just along for the ride, but back in the driver’s seat.

Escape away to a weekend of luxury, leisure, and ocean views. We explore this iconic getaway, and experience all it has to offer.
WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER
We’re getting out of town. Dust off that road trip playlist and pack some swimsuits and flip-flops. Just over 40 minutes out of Umhlanga, The View Boutique Hotel & Spa in Amanzimtoti offers a chance to get away without excessive travel time. The drive there cuts through the residential area, making it feel like a well-kept secret. On arrival, the helpful staff checked us in and then took us on a tour of the property. We followed our guide closely as he took us on a winding path through the hotel’s different sections and facilities, with the view of the ocean following us. Aside from the hotel and spa, they also have conferences, events and wedding facilities, and a restaurant, Giorgio’s.
After our tour, and getting our steps in while climbing and descending stairs, the staff helped us with our luggage and showed us the way to our rooms. We were greeted by views of lush greenery and the ocean in the distance. The combination of the king-sized bed, mood lighting, and a generously-sized bathroom makes it a perfect space to spend a romantic weekend, though we made a girls’ weekend out of it. They have a variety of rooms available, depending on your reason for escape: luxury rooms, suites, family rooms, self-catering options, and a villa. After gushing over our rooms, we decided to grab a bite to eat and realised that we didn't need to leave the hotel this weekend, everything we needed was right there.
The next morning, we decided to have a little bit of a late start before making our way to breakfast. Choosing from their dedicated breakfast menu was difficult; there were so many things we wanted to try, with the pancakes stealing the show. The outdoor seating area offered an opportunity to sip on your delicious coffee while looking out at the ocean with a cool morning breeze passing through.
Blessed with good weather for the weekend, we decided to take full advantage of it and spend some time at one of their six pools. It was time to get those tans in while sipping on refreshing drinks. The water was chilled, a nice way to cool off from the heat. Then, it was time for our treatments at the spa. After a long week, we were all looking forward to this. We each chose a treatment which suited our needs best, from a hot stone back and shoulder massage to a Lamelle facial. The staff left us feeling like we were floating out of the rooms. They also have a steam room, jacuzzi, and a hydro bath. The detoxifying salts and dark room are a sanctuary for your senses, cleansing you while you float in the warm water. Returning to our rooms, we got ready for the rugby game and spent our evening unwinding and reflecting on the day we had.
We almost didn’t leave the next day, but we had to return to the real world, eventually. We were thoroughly spoiled by the amenities and attentive team who checked in to see if we were comfortable. It’s easy to see how they won the Service Excellence award at the Durban Tourism Business Awards. Exclusive and family-run, the attention to detail and quality was not missed. It was a wonderful weekend away, and we’ll be dreaming of going back for a while.

Situated in The View Boutique Hotel & Spa, Giorgio’s Restaurant is a must-visit if you’re looking for a fine dining experience. Frequented by hotel guests and locals, it’s a versatile spot for friend lunches overlooking the ocean or romantic evening meals with an accompanying diamond wine list. During our stay at the hotel, we were lucky enough to dine at the restaurant for lunch and dinner.
After getting settled in our rooms, we decided to take a walk to the restaurant to refuel after the trip. We took a seat in the outside area, enjoying the view and the afternoon sun. We got to know the friendly staff who guided us through their lunch menu. Looking for something easy to share, we opted for one of their iconic pizzas, the Jimmy Choo. All of their pizzas are named after designer brands, each with a distinct flavour and style. Hayden, our friendly neighbourhood waiter, answered all of our questions and suggested the best and prettiest drinks to complement the pizza.
Delicious and refreshing, we sipped on some cocktails and enjoyed the laid-back ambience. Before you get your food, you get a miniature margherita pizza to snack on! It was adorable and delicious. For lighter meals, their wraps and fries are a great combination for a midday meal.
Dinner time at the restaurant is intimate and cosy, providing a setting for an evening of good food and relaxation. You can choose from their diamond wine list to pair with your food. With a distinct Italian influence, their pizzas and pastas are must-try dishes! The chicken pesto pasta, made with penne pasta and a sweet basil sauce, makes for a hearty meal. I had a few people asking for tastes, the aroma drawing attention from everyone at the table. Their seafood selections are made with fresh ingredients, often caught on the same day. The creamy garlic prawns and mussels pasta is as good as it sounds.
Made with succulent garlic prawns and served in a creamy white wine sauce, and half-shell mussels with linguine, it’s perfect for seafood lovers and anyone trying it out for the first time;
the flavours are bold yet not overpowering. The fish of the day is a popular dish, and for good reason, it is served with creamy mash and roasted vegetables. We had a bit of fish pieces and mash being poached from each other, wanting to try the dish. A meal isn’t complete without a sweet treat, and with Giorgio’s dessert selection, you’re going to want to leave a little space at the end. Served with vanilla ice cream and topped with chocolate sauce, the chocolate brownie with pecan nuts was a perfect end to an amazing evening. Throughout our experience, with every visit, the team ensured we were welltaken care of, and every patron who walks through their doors receives professional and friendly service.

In the quest for a cleaner, healthier planet, the battle against plastic waste has become a pressing concern, particularly in South Africa, where discarded plastic impacts the landfills and oceans. Amidst this challenge, Re-Purpose has emerged as a beacon of innovation, launching a recycling programme that has captivated young minds across KwaZuluNatal. At the heart of this initiative lies Buddy, the Superhero Fish structure—a vibrant symbol of ocean conservation and functional catalyst for change, inspiring eco-heroism one plastic bottle at a time.
Buddy, a Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) fish frame, encourages kids and communities to care for the planet by collecting plastic bottles sent to ALPLA Recycling in Ballito, where they're transformed into new bottles. “Buddy was inspired by children requesting something exciting to remind them to bring plastic bottles to school. We recognise that fish structures are used by other campaigns, but Buddy will be different for many reasons,” says Commercial Director Candis Sudhu.
The PET fish frame at Crawford La Lucia School is a shining example of the impactful
partnership between Polyco and ALPLA Group, fostering a new generation of ecoconscious citizens. As part of the initiative, students received educational materials from Polyco to guide and inspire them to make a difference. “A notable success is that children are bringing a plastic bag of bottles to school weekly from home, indicating they are starting to practise plastic separation at home,” says Candis.
Through interactive learning, friendly competition, and community engagement, Buddy inspires students and locals to own their environmental footprint. “Over the last six months, we have launched recycling programmes at nine schools, collecting more than 3,000 kg of plastic that would otherwise have ended up in landfills. As the programme grows and awareness increases, we anticipate these volumes will rise considerably.”
Together, with a shared commitment to recycling, we can curb plastic pollution, keeping it out of oceans and giving it a second life.

WORDS LAUREN ANNE BIANCHI
You can’t outsource your health.
Strength training is the most effective tool you have to keep your body capable for life. I like to remind myself daily to carve strength into my life, or life will carve the strength out of me.
Here’s why you should make it a priority:
Muscle is protective
• More muscle means better joint support and fewer injuries.
• It helps you bounce back faster from accidents or surgery.
• In your 40s, 50s, and beyond, muscle loss speeds up—training puts the brakes on that decline.
Strength training improves metabolism
• More muscle burns more calories at rest, even when you’re on the couch “recovering”.
• People with more lean mass tend to handle carbs and calories better without gaining fat.
• Just 3-4 sessions a week can improve blood sugar control so your energy doesn’t crash midafternoon.
It’s your insurance for ageing
• Falls are the leading cause of
injury-related death in older adults. Strong legs, hips, and core can make falling less likely.
• I like to have my clients hinge, squat, and carry heavy weights so their bodies aren’t surprised when life throws weights at them.
• Without load-bearing work, bone density drops and bones break more easily—don’t give gravity an easy win.
It builds capacity for life’s demands
• Carrying groceries, lifting luggage, or chasing your kids—these become less of a “workout” when you’re strong.
• Loaded carries build grip, posture, and stability—plus, nothing says “I’ve got my life together” like walking with purpose, holding something heavy.
Be strong for life
Strength training isn’t just for now— it’s the reason you’ll still be able to get off the floor without calling for help in your 70s. It’s the reason you’ll move your own furniture, travel without “special assistance,” and stay independent for longer. Build a body that works when you need it, not just when you feel like training.
Training makes you harder to kill
• Strong muscles protect against disease.
• Strength training + conditioning = stronger heart and lungs.
• Lifting teaches your body to adapt to stress—physical, mental, and all the random chaos life serves up.
How to start now
• Train 3-4 days a week.
• Base your plan on pushing, pulling, hinging, squatting, and carrying weights.
• Add weight or reps over time—no ego lifting, just progress.
• Include single-leg work, carries, and rotational core training.
• Keep it under 60 minutes and focus on quality reps, not circus tricks.
Ask yourself:
• Could you get off the floor without using your hands?
• Could you carry 20kg in each hand for 50m without putting it down?
• Could you lift something heavy if it meant protecting yourself or someone else?
If the answer is no, it’s time to train. Your future self will thank you—and maybe even buy you a beer.

WORDS INALA BUSINESS COACHING
We have all been asking the same question: With the rapid advancement of technology, what will people still bring to the table in the future? Automation and AI are already deeply ingrained in our everyday lives. It is shaping how we live and work, from predictive systems that warn of breakdowns on production lines to apps that recommend music, films, or even meals. The capabilities are impressive. It enables faster production times, fewer errors, and sharper forecasting.
If machines can do so much, how much space will remain for us? It is a daunting human concern.
Yes, packaging lines are automated, but it is people who diagnose faults, reconfigure processes, and get things moving again. In fabrication, AI may propose the best cutting path, but operators still adapt it to unusual materials or custom designs that the software cannot anticipate.
In food production, cameras powered by AI detect defects, but it takes human judgement to trace the cause and prevent future waste from happening. Innovation follows the same pattern. Algorithms generate options, designs, colour trends, or production sequences. Yet, it is human imagination that chooses what to pursue and what will resonate with other people. People imagine; machines optimise. And relationships remain firmly human territory. Data can forecast demand or flag risks, but it cannot build trust,
hear what is unsaid, or provide encouragement. Whether in business, classrooms, or families, it is people who interpret context, show empathy, and create commitment. People provide connection, machines generate information.
These qualities are not soft skills; they are the multipliers. Creativity fuels innovation, empathy builds loyalty, collaboration drives execution, and critical thinking shapes resilient decisions. A model might highlight a problem, but people weigh trade-offs and decide how to act. A dashboard may report performance, but it is managers, mentors, and parents who coach and inspire.
The opportunity ahead is not to compete with technology, but to strengthen the capabilities that technology cannot replicate. Technical knowledge will always matter, but so will judgement, imagination, adaptability, and care. These are the qualities that allow businesses to grow, communities to thrive, and future generations to step confidently into a changing world.
The Human Machine is not about choosing between people and technology; it is about recognising that the two together can achieve more than either alone. Machines deliver speed, accuracy, and scale. People bring foresight, creativity, and meaning. The future will be defined, not only by how advanced our machines become, but by how well we nurture the human qualities that give them purpose.
