hen Kai and I sat down to plan the development feature for this edition, we wanted to capture just how much is happening on the North Coast. We started with two points on a flipchart, Zimbali Lakes at the southern end and Club Med on the northern head, and drew a line between them. From there, we began filling in everything we knew was unfolding along that golden line. By the time we were done, we had enough for a four-page article packed with detail, and even then, we knew we had only scratched the surface. Truthfully, we could have filled another four pages with highlights without repeating ourselves.
That simple exercise reminded me just how much has already been built here, and how much more lies ahead. Looking back, it is remarkable to see how far the North Coast has come in what feels like such a short time. Looking ahead, the scale and ambition of what is planned are just as inspiring. Together, they tell a story of a coastline that continues to redefine itself, steady, confident, and full of promise.
What makes it so extraordinary are the people and companies who believe in this place. Developers, investors, and visionaries continue to put their weight behind the North Coast. Their work carries risk, but it is driven by more than numbers on a spreadsheet. They are shaping schools, estates, retail centres, and lifestyle hubs that respond to how people want to live. They are building not just for today, but for the future families,
businesses, and communities who will call this stretch of coast home.
When you drive through Ballito, Salt Rock, or Tinley Manor, the evidence of growth is everywhere. Schools under construction are already filling up, new estates have homes springing to life, and the local coffee shops seem busier than ever. Our growth is not just conceptual or tied to abstract plans; it is a lived reality shaping our daily lives and creating opportunities for all of us.
This October Development feature is something we have published for nearly 10 years, and it’s always been one of my favourites. This year, I encourage you to read it with both perspective and anticipation. Reflect on what you have seen since moving here, how you have watched it grow, and consider how blessed we will be in the next 10 or 15 years as the story continues. The more I think about it, the more grateful I am that we are part of this journey and that we can call the North Coast our home.
Enjoy the read. It really is a showcase of extraordinary growth, remarkable people, and the paradise we share.
God Bless

How often have you been in a meeting where someone's reaction seemed out of proportion? Or watched a project derail because team members were operating from different assumptions? These moments usually aren't about a lack of competence. But they might be about a lack of awareness. Self-awareness helps teams grow towards high performance. When team members understand their own motivations, triggers, and blind spots, they can regulate their own emotions, notice when their own reactions might be clouding their judgement, and take responsibility for themselves and the way they show up.
There's a reason why tools like the Leadership Circle Profile include self-awareness as a core dimension when measuring leadership effectiveness. Without the ability to see ourselves clearly - our patterns, our impact, our unconscious habits - we're essentially leading blind.
Self-aware teams
• Stay calm under pressure: They respond to what's really happening instead of reacting from past triggers, making a conflict about productive debate rather than personal wounding.
• Read the room and adapt: They notice when their communication isn't landing or their energy is off, then adjust their approach before small issues become team derailers.
• Know each other's operating systems: They understand who needs time to process, who thrives on debate, and who goes quiet when overwhelmed, and then work with these patterns, not against them.
• Solve problems at the source: They address the real issues behind team friction instead of dancing around personalities, leading to faster resolution and better results.
• Turn individual differences into team superpowers: By understanding each person's natural patterns, they leverage diverse thinking for more creativity, innovation and growth.
Interestingly, what makes self-awareness truly powerful is that it’s contagious. When one person shows up with genuine self-knowledge, others feel permission to explore their own patterns. Suddenly, instead of tiptoeing around quirks, we start having the conversations needed for higher performance and better results. The pathway starts with each individual's commitment to knowing themselves more deeply. When everyone makes this commitment, collective intelligence exponentially increases, and that's where real team strength is born.
Some ways to start building more selfawareness in your teams
• Explore a framework like the Enneagram to gain insight into each person's core motivations, strengths, challenges, and communication styles.
• Create regular check-ins where team members can share how they're showing up and what support they need.
• Practise reflecting on your reactions by noticing where you might have been operating from a less healthy space, and what might have been going on for you beneath the surface.
• Establish team “operating agreements” that honour different working styles and communication preferences.
• Encourage curiosity over judgement. When someone's behaviour seems puzzling, ask yourself, "What might be going on for them?"
Without the ability to see ourselves clearly - our patterns, our impact, our unconscious habits - we're essentially leading blind

On South Africa’s North Coast, demand isn’t just keeping pace with development, it’s driving it. Each month, more than 70 families relocate here, driving a demand for premium lifestyle estates, schools, retail centres, and business parks that together are redefining the region’s future. From Zimbali Lakes to the site of the country’s first Club Med resort, the past year has seen milestone after milestone turn unprecedented vision into reality, proving why this coastline has become the benchmark for how lifestyle, investment, and community can grow side by side.
At the southern gateway to the North Coast, Zimbali Lakes is setting the pace. Since earthworks began in late 2021, the estate has shifted from site preparation to delivering on its promise of a fully integrated lifestyle destination. The Ernie Els Signature Golf Course has opened, anchoring the estate as a sporting and leisure hub, while new residential precincts and subdivisions are steadily taking shape. Stands now start from R2.9 million, and the Ernie Els Suites, launched at R3.37 million each, are already 75% sold. Looking ahead, the Tatali
precinct is expected to bring a vibrant mix of retail, dining, and commercial space by 2027, completing the resort’s vision of a live-work-play community that blends premium coastal living with urban convenience.
Just up the road, Zimbali Oasis, the retail centre previously known as The Wedge, is reestablishing itself as a modern convenience hub in the southern zone. The centre’s upgrades appear on track; the recent addition of Zimbali Oasis Padel has already drawn visitors, and the new Spar Gourmet is set to open in November. This flagship Spar will introduce an upmarket store concept designed to appeal broadly to Ballito residents, combining everyday convenience with an elevated shopping experience. Several other tenants are expected to follow soon after, joining existing anchors like Seattle Coffee, Jack’s Paint, a dental practice, and a car wash.
Across the M4 from Ashton International College, Ballito Life is adding to the expansion of Ballito’s residential core, following the success of Ballito Village. Construction began in August 2024, with the first handovers scheduled for November
this year. The development brings 110 contemporary apartments in one-, two-, and three-bedroom layouts, with prices starting from an affordable R1.3 million. Steady demand highlights a clear preference for accessible, modern homes close to schools, retail, and work opportunities.
Back across the M4 is The Well Centre, home to the well-known La Piazza restaurant and the recently opened Catia’s Petite coffee shop. A new multi-level development is underway at the rear of the centre, expanding the centre's commercial and medical office space. Construction began recently, and details, including the final tenant mix, are still being finalised.
As the North Coast grows, schools are expanding to meet demand. At Reddam House Ballito, construction is underway on a new state-of-the-art Preparatory School, an R80-million investment set for completion in December. The campus will accommodate an additional 300 students and introduce forward-thinking facilities, such as a Metaverse Room, STEAM studios, and a double-volume collaborative piazza. This expansion underlines how educational infrastructure
is evolving in step with the region’s rapid residential growth.
In the heart of the village, just a road back from Clarke’s Beach, Burleigh Ballito has brought new life to a long-vacant site. Officially launched in May 2024, the development offers 30 sea-facing apartments with prices starting from R3.9 million. Sales have been strong, with 60% sold since June, reflecting the demand for premium coastal living within walking distance of shops, cafés, and everyday amenities. Its position, combining uninterrupted sea views with direct access to the village centre, highlights why this pocket of Ballito remains one of the most sought-after.
Further inland, North Point is taking shape as one of the region’s largest mixed-use developments. Spanning 380,000 square metres, the business park comprises 58 serviced platforms designed for warehousing, logistics, and light industry. Several facilities are already operational, including North Point Storage and ALPLA, an Austrian plastics packaging and recycling company. Within the precinct, the residential component, Ballito Bliss, has added momentum, offering double-gated security that has proven attractive to both investors and homeowners. North Point’s scale positions it as a major driver of jobs and commercial activity for the North Coast in the years ahead.
Just beyond North Point, Idladla is introducing a new concept to the North Coast market: flexible, affordable accommodation designed around standalone buildings with multiple selfcontained units. Ground was broken in October 2024, with the first phase already underway. The estate will eventually comprise 152 freestanding buildings, each containing 14 units with kitchenettes and ensuite bathrooms. Rollout is planned in phases of roughly 200 units every four to five months, with the full development unfolding over the next four to five years. For Ballito, it represents a first-of-itskind model that broadens the spectrum of residential opportunities.
Heading north, New Salt Rock City continues to grow into a self-contained node of schools, retail, and residential estates. Its newest launch, Salt Rock City Estate, made headlines in March 2025 when 50% of the 180 units were sold within the first two hours of release. By the end of the launch weekend, 108 units, or 75% of the total, were sold, setting a new sales benchmark for the region. Residents enjoy proximity to the Salt Rock City Shopping Centre and Curro Salt Rock, making the estate especially attractive to relocating families.
Leaving Salt Rock and heading north on the N2, major infrastructure is following the pace of development. In April 2024, Collins Residential began construction on a new interchange to serve Seaton Estate and the surrounding estates, namely Zululami and Lalela. Scheduled for completion in April 2026, the interchange will ease traffic and provide an additional access point onto the N2. Alongside this, Seaton has announced plans for Seaton House School, a 25-hectare independent co-educational campus catering from Grade 0000 to Grade 12. The school is set to open in January 2027 and will add further depth to the region’s expanding education network.
Past Ballito, Palm Lakes Estate continues to evolve with the launch of Kingsley at Palm Lakes, a new residential precinct within the established estate. Homes range from two-bedroom, two-bathroom units with single garages priced from R2.2 million, to four-bedroom, threebathroom options with double garages at R3.3 million. The development caters to families seeking secure, estate living with strong growth potential, further extending the appeal of the northern section of the North Coast.
Anchoring the northern end of the region’s current wave of development is Club Med, South Africa’s first all-inclusive Club Med resort. Spanning 32 hectares along an unspoilt stretch of beach, the resort will combine coastal and safari experiences in one destination. Bookings opened in October 2025, ahead of the
Cobus Oelofse, CEO of the iLembe Chamber of Commerce, says the breadth of development is what makes the North Coast unique: “Within the large estates, sub-developments are creating new communities. Agile developers like Arcis are delivering distinctive projects, while nodes such as North Point are proving how industrial and mixed-use opportunities can grow alongside residential demand. Even long-empty sites like Burleigh are drawing interest again, and Club Med is already acting as a catalyst for the Tinley node. Together, these developments show how the North Coast is evolving into a region of long-term opportunity for families, businesses, and investors.”
official launch in July 2026, and demand has been immediate. Beyond its role as a holiday destination, the resort is expected to boost surrounding land values, attract international visitors, and provide a long-term injection of jobs and economic activity into the iLembe region.
From Zimbali Lakes through to Club Med, the past year has been defined by milestone after milestone, estates breaking ground, schools expanding, retail and medical centres opening, and infrastructure keeping pace. Each project tells part of a bigger story, consistent demand meeting consistent delivery, and a coastline where vision is steadily being built into reality.
Seaton Estate is Rewilding the North Coast into a Blue and Green Zone Haven
When you drive past Seaton Estate on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, it is easy to see a luxury residential development taking shape. But what sets them apart from other estates in the region is something far more profound: a commitment to rewilding the land into an authentic coastal ecosystem.
The land that now forms Seaton Estate was once a thriving coastal wilderness, home to indigenous forests, grasslands, and estuaries, before sugarcane farming transformed the landscape. The vision of the developer, Collins
Residential, has been to restore this environment - not just as an aesthetic gesture, but as a way of creating an authentic living experience rooted in the natural heritage of the region.
A Return to What Nature Intended Instead of imposing a manicured, artificial landscape, Seaton has embraced an indigenous planting palette that revives what once existed hundreds of years ago. This approach elevates nature as the guiding force of the development. Wetlands are being rehabilitated, reed beds and bird hides created, and corridors of biodiversity re-established. The result is a landscape that feels timeless,
offering residents the chance to live amongst the ecosystems that were always meant to thrive here.
This ecological approach does more than restore beauty. It aligns with global thinking around “Blue Zones” - regions of the world where people live longer, healthier lives. Research into Blue Zones has revealed common factors that contribute to longevity: moving naturally, reducing stress, fostering community connections, and living with purpose.
Seaton as a Blue and Green Zone Seaton Estate offers both “blue” and lush “green” zones in abundance.
26 km of walking, running, and cycling trails, along with equestrian paths and conserved valleys, connect residents with green spaces that encourage natural movement, outdoor activity, and quiet reflection
Its 1.1 km stretch of beach frontage and direct access to Christmas Bay provide the calming, restorative benefits of ocean living. At the same time, 26 km of walking, running, and cycling trails, along with equestrian paths and conserved valleys, connect residents with green spaces that encourage natural movement, outdoor activity, and quiet reflection.
In a world where daily life is increasingly fast-paced and stressful, Seaton provides an antidote. Spaces have been intentionally designed to promote downshifting - whether it’s an afternoon walk on a bridle path, a
picnic amongst the coastal dunes, or a mindful moment at a whalewatching lookout. The estate becomes a sanctuary where health and happiness are woven into daily routines.
for Wellbeing
By allowing nature to lead, Collins Residential has created an environment where the essentials of healthy living are embedded in the design of the Seaton development. It’s a model of sustainable, conscious development that redefines what estate living on the North Coast can be. Residents can begin their morning snorkelling in
the rock pools of Christmas Bay, spend the afternoon in a friendly game of padel or tennis at the Country Club, and close the day with a horseback ride along the shoreline. These experiences embody the principles found in the world’s Blue Zones: moving naturally, downshifting by immersing in nature, and strengthening social connections through shared activities.
A Legacy for Generations
Seaton Estate is reshaping the way people live today, and it is creating a legacy for future generations. By rewilding the land and elevating what nature intended, Collins Residential has ensured that Seaton will remain a place of beauty, health, and balance for decades to come.
For those who already know Ballito and its surroundings, Seaton offers something refreshingly different: not another estate, but a living, breathing environment - a place where nature and community thrive together, and where the secret to a longer, healthier, more connected life may just be found.

Sometimes it’s the smallest spaces that leave the biggest impression. That’s exactly the case with Catia’s Petite, the latest creation by Sphere Design & Architecture. Tucked into a prominent corner at The Well Centre in Ballito, this café may be compact in size, but it packs a punch in personality and design.
Sphere Design & Architecture is known for projects that span the spectrum, from shopping centres and hotels to luxury residences, both in South Africa and abroad. But it’s their bespoke, niche concepts, like Catia’s and now Catia’s Petite, where their attention to detail truly shines.
As the Sphere team explains, “These projects are more intricate, where we showcase the level of detail that we can bring into every project regardless of scale.”
Catia’s Petite is a reimagining of the original Catia’s at Ballito Junction, adapted for a grab-and-go environment. Positioned on a corner with high visibility, it was the perfect opportunity to create something memorable. “We revisited design elements from the previous project and refined them to create a relaxed, modern space with a sense of understated elegance,” the Sphere team says.
From the outside, the café immediately catches the eye. A canvas awning wraps around the building, offering both shade and a bold visual frame for signage. Below, a striking mosaic wall commands attention and, as the Sphere team notes, provides “a perfect photo opportunity for customers.” This mosaic detail extends through to the tabletops, creating a cohesive design story both inside and out. An external deck, complete with bicycle racks, adds to the café’s appeal, offering
a casual, functional space that’s already popular with regulars.
Inside, the palette leans toward warmth and sophistication. Ash timber with a light stain brings fresh, natural tones, while fern green Cemcote walls add depth and texture. Brass accents appear in the signage, floor trims, and counter detailing, delivering “a sense of understated elegance.” The furniture is intentionally pared back, allowing key design elements to take centre stage, like the green marble tabletops,
terracotta planters, and a custom breeze block screen that has become “a unique signature element for the Catia’s brand.” Of course, a café is as much about flow as it is about style. The counter was carefully designed to streamline the customer journey. “In a grab-and-go setting, the flow from ordering to collection is everything; it needs to be seamless and efficient,” the Sphere team explains. Customers pass by a well-stocked fridge and pastry display before placing their orders at the counter, where multiple baristas create a lively and engaging atmosphere. At the far end, a dedicated collection point keeps things moving. When asked about their favourite feature, the answer is clear. “There are a few features that can be mentioned, but specifically the external wall mosaic. This wall mosaic is a wow factor to customers, and it adds a distinctive touch to the space and brand itself.”
With Catia’s Petite, Sphere Design & Architecture has proven that small doesn’t have to mean simple. By balancing refined design with functionality, they’ve created a café that’s as stylish as it is welcoming. A place where even a quick coffee feels like a moment worth savouring.

On any given afternoon, as the sun dips low over the coastal hills, life at Simbithi Eco-Estate unfolds in ways that feel both timeless and extraordinary. Children pedal their bikes home from friends’ houses, neighbours pause for a chat along leafy trails, and couples gather on wide verandahs to toast another Ballito sunset. It is in these everyday rhythms that Simbithi’s magic lies - and perhaps why the Estate continues to shine so brightly in the eyes of the community.
At the recently held Best of Ballito Readers’ Choice Awards 2025, Simbithi once again claimed top honours: Best Estate for the third year in a row, Best Event Venue (2024 & 2025), Best Conference Centre (2024 & 2025), and, most recently, Best Golf Course 2025. These accolades matter not because of the trophies themselves, but because they are chosen by the people - a true reflection of the public’s trust and confirmation of what the Simbithi community already knows: that life here is truly exceptional.
A Place Built to Belong Spread across 430 hectares, Simbithi has grown into a community where every stage of life has a place. Young professionals find their start in townhouses and sectional-title units, families put down roots in spacious freehold homes, and retirees enjoy the security and serenity of well-designed apartments. This multi-generational character has been designed with intent, ensuring that Simbithi feels as inclusive and dynamic as the people
Its promise is simple, yet powerful: to remain a place where life is richer, fuller, and more connected
who call it home. Even the Estate’s staff mirrors this diversity, spanning the same spectrum of life as its residents. This relatability adds another layer to the sense of belonging, making the community feel deeply connected and understood.
For Simbithi, still a pioneering estate more than 21 years after its inception, these awards are more than public praise. They are recognition that, even as new estates emerge along the North Coast, Simbithi remains a leader - relevant, credible, and still shaping the property landscape. To still hold such dominance in a fastgrowing market is, in itself, a compliment and proves that the Estate’s model of blending natural beauty, world-class facilities, and a strong sense of community remains the golden standard.
Bedrock of Community Part of Simbithi’s ongoing success lies in its governance. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) - always a cornerstone of the Estate’s functioning - was recently held, and once again well-attended, engaged, and vibrant. Residents didn’t just show up to vote; they came to participate, to have their voices heard, and to help shape the future of their home. From that meeting, the 2025/26 Board of Directors was constituted: a capable, diverse group drawn from the community itself, ready to
guide the Estate into its next chapter. This new board will review Simbithi’s refreshed strategy, ensuring it stays ahead of the curve while keeping the heart of the Estate rooted in its people.
Of course, Simbithi’s success is not just measured in boardrooms or ballots, but in the moments that define daily life. Its award-winning golf course, crowned Best in Ballito for 2025, is as much a place for quiet walks as it is for championship swings. The event venue and conference centre host everything from milestone celebrations to industry gatherings, while community centres and recreational facilities knit together the beauty of family life.
With its community spirit stronger than ever, the trust of the community, and a refreshed board at the helm, Simbithi is poised to continue leading the way. Its promise is simple, yet powerful: to remain a place where life is richer, fuller, and more connected. Because while awards and accolades may celebrate Simbithi’s success, the true reward is felt in the lives of those who call it home.

Lee Shelly shares her timeless tips and trends for living rooms that feel as good as they look.
Step inside any home and you’ll likely be drawn to the living room first. It’s the place where life happens, where conversations unfold, and everyday moments become something special. More than any other space, the living room is the emotional heartbeat of a home. At some point in our lives, the living room has played host to it all: blanket forts, deep chats with friends, family game nights, tea parties, and those elegant evenings where you light candles, pour a glass of wine, and enjoy good company. It’s a space that deserves thoughtful design to support every one of those moments.
Living Room Design Trends for 2025
Design is always evolving, but 2025 is proving to be a beautiful mix of nostalgia, nature, and elevated comfort. Here are the biggest trends I’m loving right now:
Soft Curves & Organic Shapes
Say goodbye to harsh angles and hello to gentle, flowing lines. Curved chairs, rounded coffee tables, and arched details are taking centre stage.
Layered Neutrals with a Twist
Think warm, layered neutrals with depth, creamy taupes, soft caramels, and stone greys, paired with natural textures like linen, boucle, and oak. Pops of vintage-inspired colour, like dusty rose or muted olive, add personality without overwhelming the palette.
“Granny Chic” Revival
Your grandma was on to something! From scalloped lampshades to floral patterns, traditional pieces are being reimagined in fresh, modern ways. It’s all about mixing old and new, creating a space that feels collected, and not catalogued.
Three Practical Styling Tips You Can Use Today
Whether you’re revamping your living room or just giving it a quick seasonal refresh, here are three tips I swear by:
1. Mix Your Materials
The most interesting rooms strike a balance between texture and tone, bringing depth and richness to any space. Pair a velvet sofa with a jute rug, or a sleek marble coffee table with a woven ottoman.
2. Play with Height
Living rooms often fall flat (literally) because everything sits at the same level. Introduce vertical variation with a tall display cabinet, a floor lamp, or a fireplace mantle to guide the eye upward and add architectural interest.
3. Incorporate Something Vintage
Nothing grounds a space like a piece with a little history. I love adding a “granny” touch, maybe a patinated wooden side table, a handembroidered cushion, or a vintage painting. These pieces bring soul and authenticity to a room. They don’t need to dominate the look.
When I design a living room, I’m always thinking about how it feels to be in that space. Yes, we want it to be beautiful, but more importantly, it should feel like you. A well-designed living room invites you in. It’s where you feel at ease, where your kids (or your guests) can curl up and relax, and where design doesn’t take itself too seriously.
If your budget allows, I always recommend layering rugs in the living room. Even the smallest detail can bring a sense of richness and warmth. A flat weave under a textured wool rug, or a jute base paired with a patterned piece, can transform a space both visually and underfoot. Another detail I never overlook? The backs of chairs. Often, this is the first thing you see when you enter a room, especially in open-plan homes. If your living room seating faces away from the entry or a hallway, make sure the back of that armchair or sofa is just as beautiful as the front, whether it’s through a subtle pattern, a sculptural shape, or even a unique fabric. It’s the little things like these that turn a living room from functional to fabulous.
Above all, every living room should be crafted with memory-making in mind. Because in the end, that’s what this space is truly for.
Nestled along the KwaZuluNatal North Coast, Salt Rock has been the kind of place where neighbours greet each other at the shops and families gather for weekends on the beach. Yet, in recent years, this laid-back village has taken on a new vibrancy. Growth is everywhere - in bustling retail, expanding schools, and now in a residential development that is setting the pace for the future. That development is Salt Rock City, and it is quickly becoming the area’s most talked-about address.
When the Lifestyle Village in Salt Rock City officially launched earlier this year, the response was overwhelming. Prospective buyers arrived long before dawn, eager to secure a home in a development that promised more than just bricks and mortar. By the end of the weekend, sales had soared to levels never seen in the region. Today, 70% of the estate is sold out, a clear signal of how hungry the market is for well-
planned, secure, and lifestyle-driven communities. For those still looking to invest, there are still a limited number of sea-facing opportunities available - rare, premium plots that elevate the offering even further.
Salt Rock City has been designed to make everyday life simpler and more rewarding. The established Salt Rock City Shopping Centre forms the beating heart of the neighbourhood, bringing retail and dining options within walking distance. Families benefit from proximity to Curro Salt Rock School and nearby essential facilities, ensuring that necessities like education and healthcare are accessible. Within the estate itself, residents will enjoy a world of recreation - a clubhouse, swimming pool, Padel courts, kids’ play areas, and nature trails, all thoughtfully designed to encourage both activity and connection.
What makes Salt Rock City so distinctive
is its ability to strike a balance. It has the convenience and infrastructure of a self-contained city, yet it retains the warmth and intimacy of a close-knit village. Here, safety and security are paramount, but so too are green spaces, family life, and a sense of belonging. The visionary team behind Salt Rock City have already demonstrated their commitment to their idea of community, from engaging with local schools in the build-up to launch and recently announcing Sharks rugby captain Vincent Tshituka as the official brand ambassador, ensuring the estate is woven into the very fabric of the North Coast.
As the developer prepares to break ground and create more employment prospects, the excitement is tangible. The Lifestyle Village in Salt Rock City is not only a residential development, but a symbol of how the North Coast is evolving: dynamic, desirable, and family-focused. For future residents and investors alike, it represents the chance to be part of something bigger - the new pulse of Salt Rock.

On 28 August, the fairways of Umhlali Country Club came alive with camaraderie, friendly rivalry, and a shared passion for making a difference. Brettenwood’s Charity Golf Day was more than a sporting event - it was proof of what can be achieved when a community rallies behind a cause. With over 100 players taking part, the day combined spirited competition with heartfelt generosity, raising an outstanding R150,000 in aid of the Flag Animal Farm. These funds will go directly towards the care and rehabilitation of vulnerable animals, offering them a second chance at life.
The format was a shotgun start, and teams wasted no time embracing the challenge. By the end of the day, it was the formidable fourball of Ailsa Drummond, Paddi Reich, Glenda Hickman, and Charmaine Kinsella who claimed the top honours. A special word of thanks goes to Fidelity ADT, whose unwavering support as title sponsor ensured the day’s success. From contributing resources to championing the cause, their partnership amplified the event's impact and set the tone for a truly memorable occasion.
Beyond the scorecards, the real victory lay in the sense of unity that
carried the event. Residents, sponsors, and friends of Brettenwood came together with a shared purpose: to demonstrate that compassion and community spirit are inextricably linked. Every person who contributed played a part in making this event extraordinary. Their generosity helped us raise vital funds and reminded us of the difference corporate partnerships can make.
As the sun set over the course, the mood was one of gratitude and pride. The Charity Golf Day was not only a memorable sporting occasion but also a reminder of Brettenwood’s heart - a community committed to giving back.
In a stunning Ballito apartment, Interior Edge applied the principles of colour theory to bring the space to life. Let's take a closer look at their design process. Their vision was to capture the essence of the ocean views, which guided their palette of soft neutrals, layered textures, and bold accent pieces. They drew inspiration from the soft blues and sandy neutrals of the coastline, introducing coral, earthy greens, and warm terracottas to reflect the vibrancy of the area. Each tone was chosen not just for its beauty but also for how it interacts with natural light at different times of the day.
To create a sense of flow and continuity throughout the apartment, they worked with a layered palette that carries through each room. Soft neutral colours provide a backdrop for bolder accents, such as the vibrant wallpaper in the living room, to stand out without overwhelming the space. By repeating textures like natural timber and stone colours, they established continuity from room to room while still allowing each space its own character.
Lighting plays a crucial role in enhancing the colour scheme. They layered natural light with soft sheers, concealed LED strips, pendants, and accent lights to bring out textures
and finishes. For example, the timber slats in the bedroom are backlit to add depth and warmth, highlighting the natural materials. This layering ensures the colours feel alive and adaptive, from day to night.
They applied the 60-30-10 rule as a foundation: 60% neutral base, 30% secondary tones for balance, and 10% bold accents for energy. This ensured harmony without restricting creativity. They also worked with complementary contrastsbalancing warm terracottas with cooler blues - to create a lively yet grounded atmosphere.
Colour is central to the emotional story of each space. In the living area, bold and expressive tones spark energy and conversation. In the bedroom, softer hues and layered lighting create a calming retreat, while playful touches add personality. Their aim was to evoke a balance of tranquillity and vibrancy - a home that feels both restful and uplifting.
Neutral tones served as a grounding backdrop, allowing them to introduce bold colours strategically. They paired strong feature elements, like the mural wall, with understated finishesoak flooring, textured fabrics, and muted cabinetry - so the eye is naturally drawn to focal points
Inspired by shoreline hues and textured layers, this apartment showcases how thoughtful design can express harmonious balance and timeless beauty.
without feeling overwhelmed. Their palette responds beautifully to changing light. During the day, natural light enhances the soft neutrals and ocean-inspired hues, while in the evening, layered lighting warms up the space, making it feel cosy and intimate. This adaptability ensures the apartment feels timeless across seasons. To bring the colour scheme to life and create a cohesive look, they added final touches, including handpicked fabrics - patterned cushions, woven baskets, and textured throws - that tie the palette together. Art and accessories were carefully selected to complement the wallpaper's energy without competing with it. These accents unify the scheme, making the space feel complete, personal, and cohesive.
By applying key principles and techniques, they crafted a space that not only reflects its stunning ocean views but also evokes a sense of tranquillity and vibrancy. Whether you're looking to revamp your own home or simply appreciate the art of colour, this feature is sure to spark your imagination and inspire you to craft a truly exceptional environment.

When it comes to interior design, colour is a powerful tool that can evoke emotions, create ambience, and even influence one's mood
At FabMags, our team isn’t just a group of people working together - we’re a family. And what better way to connect with family than around a table filled with incredible food? Nicole and Trevor, the heart and soul behind Al Pescatore, knew exactly how to make that happen. Having worked with them for years, we knew their restaurant would set the scene for something special.
If you haven’t popped into Al Pescatore recently, you’re in for a surprise. The restaurant has had a gorgeous
makeover, giving it a fresh, modern feel with stylish new seating, tables, and a stunning bar. But don’t worry, their authentic charm hasn’t gone anywhere. We just had to experience it for ourselves and share it with our readers.
Nicole and Trevor put together a thoughtful menu and plan for our team day, and from the moment we arrived, we knew we were in for a treat. Walking in, the space felt bright and welcoming, flowing from reception to the deck and into the new bar, where our foodie adventure kicked off.
Waiting for us were Aperol Spritz trees (yes, trees!) and a spread of their new bar bites. Juicy bacon-wrapped prawn bites with a creamy mayo dip, deep-fried calamari with the most addictive ginger, soy, and coriander sauce (I’d honestly buy that by the bottle), and bite-sized pizzas that paired perfectly with a drink in hand. The new bar and nibbles have such a vibeperfect for after-work drinks, catching up with friends, or even a date night.
Once we’d mingled and snacked, Nicole led us to a beautifully set table, where the real feast began - family style, of course. And that’s the beauty of Al Pescatore: it’s not just a spot for dinner, it’s the perfect place for year-end lunches, celebrations, and family functions too.
We tucked into their famous Mediterranean Grill Seafood Platters, loaded with grilled hake, prawns, mussels, seafood kebabs, and the dreamiest peppadew-and-prawn phyllo pastry. On the side? Chips, veggies, rice, and three of their signature house-made sauces. But the table didn’t stop there; pizzas arrived, too. The veg-friendly Gourmet Pizza with butternut, spinach, onion, feta, rosemary balsamic reduction, and avocado. The Thai Prawns & Calamari Pizza with prawns,
calamari, mushrooms, pickled ginger, fresh coriander, and balsamic drizzle. The Al Franco with salami, feta, capers, and calamata olives. And the famous Durbs Pizza, fillet steak topped with a creamy curry sauce and avocado (my personal favourite!).
Trevor and Nicole went the extra mile, adding in their Prawn Poppers: prawn tails in a crispy beer batter with coconut, coriander, and chilli sauce, plus Combo Platters of saucy pork ribs and chicken wings. Between the laughter, the “mmm’s,” and the quiet moments of everyone just enjoying themselves, it felt like the perfect celebration of both food and family.
And then, dessert. One tradition they’ve kept through the revamp is the dessert tray, rolled right up to your table. We were treated to the peppermint tart and their famous Bar-One cheesecake, both served with vanilla ice cream. Paired with our coffees, it was the perfect sweet ending. The cherry on top? Spotting a whale splashing out at sea. Moments like that remind us how lucky we are to live here.
To the Al Pescatore family, thank you for treating our family team to such a special experience and for reminding us why your restaurant will always be one of Ballito’s favourites.
Between the laughter, the “mmm’s,” and the quiet moments of everyone just enjoying themselves, it felt like the perfect celebration of both food and family

Four law firms share valuable insight into their respective fields of legal expertise
Many people see conveyancing as just paperwork. Our role is to ensure that once a property is registered, your ownership is secure and cannot be challenged; that’s the real safeguard of conveyancing. What clients often don’t realise is that a property transfer involves three processes running in parallel: the transfer of ownership, cancellation of an existing bond, and registration of a new bond. This requires multiple law firms, coordination with banks, municipalities, and the Deeds Office. There are also misconceptions about costs. Most expenses relate to transfer duty, Deeds Office fees, and VAT, with conveyancers’ fees forming only a small portion. Another common myth is that when a property is bonded, the bank “owns” it. In reality, the purchaser is the registered owner; the bank simply holds the title deed as security.
Signing a sale agreement is not just a formality; it has real consequences. For most people, it's the biggest financial transaction of their lives. That’s why it is vital to consult your conveyancer before you sign on the dotted line. If something you discussed and agreed upon is not on the contract, it doesn't exist, and that is a red flag. Sellers should also understand that once the agreement is
signed, it sets in motion the legal process to transfer ownership, with binding obligations on both sides. Check the condition of the property upfront. Most sales are “voetstoots,” meaning you buy the property as it stands, with little recourse to the seller afterwards. Finally, remember that you cannot buy property in a trust that is still ‘to be formed’the trust should be in place before you purchase and you need to carefully consider adverse tax consequences of purchasing property in a trust.
Our strongest advice is to get onto the property ladder as early as possible. Property remains one of the best ways to build wealth because of the principle of gearing. Here's an example: if you put down a R100,000 deposit on a R1 million home and later sell it for R1.1 million, you’ve effectively doubled your money; it's a 100% return on your initial investment. You can use your property as security to borrow money for other opportunities, such as starting a business, upgrading to a more valuable home, or acquiring additional properties for rental income. Buying young means building generational wealth for yourself and your family, securing a stable asset that grows in value over time. With the right guidance, your first purchase can become the foundation for long-term financial security.
Bio: Karien founded AMC Hunter Inc. in 1987 as a young attorney and mom. Nearly four decades later, alongside Co-Director Saijal Pale, the boutique firm continues to specialise in conveyancing. With a loyal staff and her daughter-in-law, Camen, now on the team, they support South Africans in building generational wealth through secure and efficient property transactions.
Property law governs a large part of our lives, from land and ownership rights to land reform and redistribution, rate of development and impact on the community, and whether the impact is positive and meets community needs. Property lawyers assist with development from the ground up, including provision for environmental factors to the establishment of homeowners' rules and regulations. An in-depth knowledge of financing, interest rates, costs of acquisition, and affordability is also an integral part of property law. One needs to understand and guide clients on various ownership structures and their long-term implications. Guidance starts before acquiring property by giving sound advice on matrimonial systems and estate planning. Property law also encompasses neighbour law, tenant disputes, and dealing with ownership and tenants' rights. In brief, it covers everything from building, buying, selling, renting, inheriting, and even the enjoyment of public spaces and amenities.
Have a valid, properly executed Will drawn up by a professional and keep it up to date as changes in your life take place. Your Will should be clear and concise. Make sure that your estate planning provides for liquidity and that beneficiaries are taken care of. Create a testamentary trust in your Will if you have minors or vulnerable dependents. Get expert advice on estate duty, capital gains tax, transfer costs, and any other costs that may be incurred.
032 947 0865 www.cjcogan.co.za
Apart from the obvious position, position, position - one would also need to consider amenities and facilities for tenants, but more importantly, rental demand, yield, and capital growth are crucial. The structure in which to buy is important (individual name/company/trust), and the financial and tax implications of each can have far-reaching effects that must be carefully considered, remembering that no primary residence rebate exists when selling secondary properties. Ensure your lease is professionally prepared and have a qualified estate agent assist you with obtaining quality tenants. Make sure tenants are properly vetted and that a reasonable deposit is held in trust. Bio: The firm has a large specialised debt review and litigation department headed by Ashleigh Cranke, and an estates and conveyancing practice headed by Jo-Anne Cogan.

Co-directed by Cathleen Breedt, who heads the Ballito branch, specialising in commercial law, trust, and estate litigation. Committed to delivering clear advice, strong representation, and practical solutions, she shares insight from her fields of expertise.
Trustee disagreements or deadlocks are among the most frequent cases we assist with. The trustees are essentially the ‘employees’ of a trust; they attend to the management and further the purpose of the trust. When trustees are at odds or a trustee has fallen into neglect of their fiduciary duties, it is necessary to seek legal recourse to resolve the dispute. This can be achieved by dissolving the issue or by removing the trustee who is no longer serving to the benefit of the trust. These disputes are rarely capable of settlement between parties and often require judicial intervention.
The typical deceased estate litigation that arises is the removal of an executor from this role. The executor fills a crucial role in the winding up of the deceased estate, and the usual case is that these trusted individuals are not fulfilling their duties according to the Administration of Estates Act. It is necessary to have regard to the factual matrix of each dispute to decide whether it is advisable to remove an executor; however, the heirs to an estate may gauge the executor’s standard by the amount of time that it takes to wind up the estate and
deliver crucial documents in the process. The heirs must be guided accordingly and present ample evidence of the undesirability of the said executor before deciding to launch an application to remove them. We are often briefed to lodge or dispute claims against a deceased estate. In this regard, potential claims to be lodged would constitute any debt owed by the deceased estate, whether it be contractual or maintenance-related, as well as defending any action against the deceased estate where the heirs are of the view that such a claim should be disallowed.
Albeit the legislation on both trusts and estates is quite old, the law is consistently developed by our Courts. Therefore, these areas of the law are continually evolving and being refined. It is important to understand that matters are decided on merits being applied to the law, both legislation and case law, and each matter is considered individually. The most recent developments in trusts relate primarily to Tax and Beneficial ownership components. In terms of deceased estates, specifically potential disputes, the most recent development is the Expanded Rights for Surviving Life Partners.
Recent developments have continued expanding protections for surviving partners in permanent life partnerships (unmarried), including rights to claim against a deceased estate. In particular, regarding maintenance and inheritance. In the past, such claims were considered only in respect of surviving spouses in conventional marriages.

In the heart of Umhlali, The Workstation isn’t just another private serviced office space; it’s a slice of history, a touch of design, and a whole lot of community spirit. Business partner Conrad recently took us down memory lane, sharing how this relaxed yet dynamic space came to life.
It all began in 2004, when Conrad bought a vacant stand in the middle of Umhlali from local real estate legend Don Edwards. Although he didn’t build immediately, the vision for something different was already in motion. In 2006, he partnered with Snow (yes, that’s a person, not the weather), and together they developed one of the area’s most iconic buildings. Originally designed as KZN’s largest Interior Design Centre, complete with showroom elegance, cutting-edge interiors, and a flair for style, it catered to the booming North Coast residential market and officially opened in 2008. But when the recession hit, reinvention became the key to survival. Portions of the building were converted into serviced offices for friends, a shift that would eventually shape its future. By 2015, demand had grown so much that over 2,500 m² of space was transformed into private serviced offices, all infused with a distinct Ballito vibe. At the heart of it? Conrad’s impressive
surfboard collection is proudly displayed at the entrance. Word spread quickly, and soon The Workstation had become home to some of the North Coast’s most recognised businesses, all drawn to its fresh, flexible approach to work.
More Than Just an Office
So, who works here? The Workstation welcomes everyone from solo entrepreneurs to teams of 20 or more looking for a space that reflects their individuality. Tenants include professionals, freelancers, consultants, creatives, life coaches, traders, and even security firms.
What unites them? A shared philosophy: working smarter. With reliable high-speed internet, backup power, and distraction-free private offices, they spend less time commuting and more time being productive. And when the day ends, they embrace the North Coast lifestyle, whether it’s the beach, golf course, Holla Trails, or spending time with their kids. It’s no wonder more people are semi-migrating to the North Coast.

At the centre of it all is The Eatery - it is the beating heart of the building, a place to share a meal, bump into familiar faces, make new friends, laugh a little louder, and plan how to use all that extra free time.
It’s a workspace built on connection, collaboration, and a commitment to community
The Workstation is more than a collection of offices; it’s a partner to its tenants and a contributor to the wider community. The team’s presence is well known beyond the building, often spotted in their distinctive camo uniforms assisting local initiatives: cutting and clearing verges, installing inverters at traffic lights, planting gardens on off-ramps, and even cleaning beaches. It’s a workspace built on connection, collaboration, and a commitment to community.
It isn’t just a place to plug in your laptop. It’s a local landmark, unpretentious, relaxed, and deeply rooted in the community it calls home. And honestly? We wouldn’t have it any other way. The Workstation keeps it simple: walk in, rent an office, and get started. No fuss. No long-term commitments.

Meet Nutmeg, a bronze on marble base by artist Andrew Hofmeyr. This playful character was inspired by Hofmeyr's time living in Thailand and his exposure to Fu dog sculptures. Nutmeg is loosely based on the idea that you need to protect your thoughts. He goes a step further, though; with his big ears and big buggy eyes, he is listening and watching, but he is ready to play. Nutmeg sits in the home as an interesting and fun conversation starter, but also a protector.

Some of the best business stories don’t start in boardrooms, but around the dinner table. For the Du Plessis family, that table was filled with good food, conversation, and one very big idea: that what we eat should be delicious, honest, and traceable.
Jason Du Plessis and Matt Elliott have been best friends since Grade 8 at St Charles. Years later, life on the North Coast would bring them back together, this time not just as friends, but as business partners. “We always spoke about going into business together,” says Jason. “When the opportunity came to align our values around food and health, Riveraine was born.”
The early days of the business looked very different from the sleek Sage Centre store in Salt Rock. It started with online steak boxes of 10kg and 20kg portions, delivered directly to friends and family. But the story runs deeper. Jason and Caitlin’s late father had been passionate about food and its impact on health, and he often spoke about how bad food was linked to illnesses like cancer. When he passed in 2024, the family decided to honour his legacy by continuing his mission for better
food. “It became about more than just us,” Jason explains. “It was about carrying on what Dad believed in and sharing it with others as well.” You will see a photo of their late dad hung proudly in the store, and the use of his handwritten signature within the branding. “We will continue to weave his legacy in subtle ways through the brand as a tribute to him,” says Caitlin.
Riveraine today is powered by more than just Jason and Matt. Jason’s sister, Caitlin, heads up the brand and marketing, while her husband, Oliver Aadnesgaard, oversees the farm operations in the Midlands.Together, they form a close-knit team that balances friendship, family, and business. Matt’s own background in animal health (where Oliver once happened to be a client) and Jason’s community ties in Ballito created a natural synergy. As Caitlin explains, “We’re handson in every step, from close relationships directly with farmers, to processing and ageing, so that customers know they can trust every cut of beef they buy from us.”
So why open a store on the North Coast rather than in the Midlands? For Jason and Matt, the answer was simple: the community. “Ballito is family-oriented,
Jason: A big, thick C-Grade T-bone steak with good yellow fat, as it has the best flavour (also a best seller). Best cooked on the braai!
Matt: A C-Grade rump steak, cooked on the braai till medium rare, sliced and served straight off the fire. Do not let it rest! It is best dipped in the Danya Chutney sold in-store.
Ollie: A thick T-bone reverseseared, which means it’s cooked in the oven first, and then sizzled on a hot fire.
supportive, and health-conscious,” says Matt. “It just made sense to start where we live and where the demand is.” The Sage Centre location has proven to be the perfect fit, surrounded by likeminded businesses and offering a steady stream of customers who care about what they put on their plates. The shop isn’t a traditional butchery; instead, it’s a farm-totable concept designed to cut out the middleman and offer better quality at competitive prices.
At the heart of Riveraine is a philosophy of honesty and transparency. “Most retailers demand beef produced with growth hormones, but that’s not us,” Caitlin shares. “Honest food means no shortcuts and no compromise. Every animal meets our standards before it reaches your plate.” Riveraine beef is growth hormone-free and free of routine antibiotics. All steaks are wet-aged for 21-28 days to develop the depth of flavour and
tenderness that loyal customers rave about. And loyalty they certainly have: regulars pop in weekly, not just for the beef but for the personal connection. “One of the most rewarding things for us is when people come back to tell us how much they enjoyed their meal,” says Matt. “That fills our cup.”
Riveraine is only just getting started. With growing demand
from Johannesburg and beyond, expansion is on the horizon, but always at a pace that honours their mission. “Growth is important,” says Ollie, “but never at the expense of quality. We’d rather grow slowly and stay true to our values.”
From their Midlands farm to the Salt Rock store, the Riveraine brand is building more than a business; they’re cultivating a community. As Jason puts it: “For us, it’s about people, from the farmers we work with, to the families we feed. If we can be part of their journey toward healthier living, then we’ve done something meaningful.”

The African coastline, on both the Atlantic and Indian Ocean sides, is underrated as a travel destination. We have the views, waves, and sea life to capture the hearts of anyone who visits.
The idea for the trip started as an invitation to tag along with friends, and became a highlight of the year. The destination was chosen for being a great spot for spearfishing, but it’s also known for great waves for surfing and

beautiful beaches with turquoise waters.
When packing for a tropical climate like Mozambique’s, swimming costumes are always the first to go in the bag. Next, shorts and light shirts, with one or two jerseys and hoodies for the cooler nights. It’s a laid-back atmosphere where comfortable clothes, flip-flops, and sunhats are the best options. You might also want to pack a pair of closed shoes for climbing rocks. “The snorkelling and diving gear is always
meticulously packed by my hubby. He is a perfectionist when it comes to that, as it is his profession,” Michelle explains. They also carried a small medical aid kit with essential medication for pain and motion sicknessnot forgetting the mosquito repellent sprays and bands. Doing research before any trip, asking people who have been there is always a good idea, and having the necessary documents and gear is the key to preparation. “You will get stopped at roadblocks. Be polite and friendly. Never
lose your cool and take your time. Be vigilant of the speed limits and keep to them at all times.”
The weather was kind, with beautiful sunshinefilled days, perfect for spending time on the beach and swimming in the ocean. “We had a bit of a thunderstorm on our last night there, but other than that, it was just gorgeous throughout.” This weather was the backdrop for many special memories, “Chasing the sunset on the estuary and getting
to see flamingos fly by, in real life, not on a documentary. Snorkelling in big rock pools that are covered when it's high tide. Lying on the beach under a sky full of stars, literally,” Michelle recalls. Amongst the memories of walking along the beach and through the villages, a very special moment was before we arrived at our destination: we realised that a passport was left behind! “Thank goodness I realised this before we got to the border. My daughter met us at the toll, which was about an hour drive back for us, with the forgotten passport. Not a 'special memory' but one I'll never forget.”
The area yielded highlights and souvenirs to collect. Under the beautiful sunset skies of colourful hues, treasures were found on the shore. “Shells! Shells are my birthstone, and I found the smallest pansy shell I have ever seen!” she exclaims. They also did some rock climbing to explore what was on the other side of the beach they were staying on, “And the 'blow holes'! When waves crash against the jagged rock cliff, water gets sprayed up through them. You can get pretty close to them, but the noise is so loud and a bit scary.” Staying at Shipwreck Lodge, you could walk right onto the beach from the accommodation, and drinking fresh coconut water straight from the source was also a welcome treat, as well as the famous R&Rs, “Mozambique is renowned for this drink. But be warned! It may taste like Raspberry Sparletta, but boy, does it pack a punch. Especially after a couple.”
Even though Mozambique is an international destination, it’s still close by, neighbouring our country, and you don’t need a visa to go there. You can drive there and enjoy the sights along the way, discovering new things about our continent.
We made a road trip out of it. Pomene is up north and is quite a drive, but we took it slow going up, stopping for the night in Ponta do Ouro for a quick surf and dinner at our favourite little restaurant, Love Café. It was my birthday, so we just enjoyed the chilled drive up, sundowners and dinner, and a stay at an Airbnb for the night.” All in all, a wonderful trip full of sun and sea!
Meet four families whose journeys have led them away and then back to South Africa, and discover what makes Ballito more than just a fabulous place to live.
Claudine Schafli
After two years in Woking, Surrey, a transfer opportunity for my late husband brought us back to South Africa, and while his company wanted us in Cape Town, our hearts were set on Ballito. We had holidayed here before and even spent the lockdown in Simbithi, which confirmed it as home. Life here is relaxed, active, and community-driven. The kids cycle, hike, and play freely, and we love the beach and berg getaways. While the UK has its charm (London will always be a favourite), Ballito offers a slower pace and a stronger sense of belonging. The town’s growth has been incredible, yet it still feels like a close-knit village where neighbours look out for each other. Returning wasn’t just about work or lifestyle; it was about raising our kids in a place filled with sunshine, simplicity, and that unmistakable South African spirit.
My return to South Africa was after two years in the UK, an adventure that began when my son needed his British passport. While it started off exciting, the reality soon set in: tiny flats, grey weather, long commutes, and missing my family, friends, and the easy outdoor lifestyle of home. A serious accident was the turning point. I realised I wanted the support, warmth, and familiarity of Durban, so I packed up within weeks and came back. Not long after, I met Craig, the love of my life, and together we’ve built a beautiful life in Simbithi, with our home even being featured on South Africa’s Finest Homes. Here, every day feels full: mountain biking, golf, beach walks, braais with friends. Ballito is vibrant yet friendly, and it truly feels like a bubble of happiness. And I easily restarted my interior design business as so many of my clients were thrilled that I had returned. Coming home was the best decision I ever made.
After seven years in New Zealand, running both our SA-based business and a newly purchased one in Rotorua, we realised that while life there was good, it never truly felt like home. Once we gained citizenship, we sat down as a family of five and unanimously voted to return to South Africa. Ballito was a new chapter for us. The warm ocean, family nearby, and the chance for our kids to grow up surrounded by loved ones made it an easy choice. Now, we wake up to birdsong, watch sunrises over the sea, and spend weekends fishing, braaiing, and exploring the bush or beach. What surprised us most is the friendliness here; people stop to chat, and there’s a real sense of community spirit. For us, Ballito offers sunshine, connection, and opportunity, and it feels like the perfect place to plant roots for the future.
When our daughter started approaching high school, we knew it was the right time to leave the Middle East and come home. After eight years abroad, family connection became the priority, and Ballito felt like the natural choice, a familiar stretch of coast that had grown from a small village into a vibrant town. Life here has given us back what we missed most overseas: the humour, the “gees”, the diversity, and the freedom of being able to drive from the beach to the Berg or bush in a day.
While expat life was rich with travel and community, settling back in Ballito has opened a new chapter, one where I’ve launched Sugar Coast Tourism, renewed my tourist guide badge, and I’m pursuing courses in wine. What excites me most is embracing this next phase of life in a town that blends community spirit, natural beauty, and endless possibility.
Leaving South Africa on an immigration basis is such a huge and life-altering decision that has both positive and negative results. We focused this feature on those returning to South Africa and having chosen Ballito (North Coast) as their place to land and re-integrate into the country. These real stories show how amazing our coastal town is, and how lucky we all are to call it home. Whether you're reading this as someone who has also just returned and resonates with these experiences, or if someone has sent this to you as you're busy weighing up decisions from afar, I hope these families' stories shed some light for you. These four families are a just a snippet of the hundreds of families that are looking to return or have returned from so many places around the world. No place is perfect, but the reality is, the North coast is a huge draw card for so many, either returning back to Ballito or returning to SA and now want to live by the warm coast of SA. We get it! Sun, sea, the warmth both in temperature and people, this is living!

We look at EDU360’s unique schooling system and speak to school leader Kimber Gould about the work they’re doing and their goals for the North Coast.
Humans are wonderfully diverse. Each of us carries unique qualities that can’t be replicated - our mannerisms, personalities, and ways of thinking. But what does it mean when someone is described as neurodivergent? Put simply, being neurodivergent means processing information, communicating, learning, and perceiving the world differently. EDU360 Integrated
Education understands this deeply, recognising the need for specialised teaching methods that honour varied learning styles.
For nearly a decade in Johannesburg, EDU360 has worked with students who learn differently. Earlier this year, EDU360 School opened in Ballito with Kimber Gould as School Lead. “Rather than seeing differences as problems, we see them as
part of the natural diversity of how humans think and experience the world,” Kimber explains. “Understanding how neurodivergent brains work is the first step toward true inclusion and awareness.”
Take dyslexia, for example. Kimber highlights how many dyslexic learners naturally visualise in 3D, displaying enhanced creativity, strong spatial reasoning,
Watching them grow in confidence, begin to enjoy learning, and look forward to each day has been deeply moving
problem-solving skills, and the ability to see the bigger picture. “We celebrate those gifts while providing support in areas where most traditional systems cannot,” she says.
Her drive for change began in childhood, watching her brother struggle in a system that couldn’t support him and simultaneously eroded his confidence. “That experience fuelled my passion for making the seemingly unreachable accessible to children who think differently,” she reflects.
Years later, Kimber found her calling in a special needs school but still felt something was missing. That’s when she discovered EDU360 in Rivonia, Johannesburg, and found a team who shared her vision.
“Finding like-minded people with the same passion for a new approach felt like a dreamespecially as they had already been proving it possible for nearly a decade… and had a whole bunch of incredible stories of change.”
In January 2025, EDU360 School Ballito opened its doors. Today, it offers two distinct pathways tailored to different stages of development. The Key Pathway focuses on foundational literacy, numeracy, and scholastic skills, while the Pivot Pathway strengthens core academics before introducing ASDAN - an internationally recognised, fully accredited certificate that applies real-life contexts to empower students toward independence. Small class sizes, hands-on teaching, an authentic understanding of each individuals’ unique abilities, gifts and differences ensures every student can thrive according to their unique strengths.
EDU360 is already laying the groundwork to launch EDU360 College Ballito in 2026, offering a Vocational Pathway through the internationally recognised BTEC, accredited by PEARSON Education. Ideal for both neurodivergent and neurotypical students seeking alternatives to a traditional matric, the BTEC is project- and assignment-based, careerfocused, and offers pathways to
university entrance. Level 2 and 3 BTEC programmes in IT will be available, the latter equivalent to UK A-levels or SA NQF Levels 4–5, equipping students with practical skills and independence-building opportunities.
Since its opening, EDU360 Ballito has been warmly welcomed by the community. “We’re fortunate to be surrounded by incredible support- from local specialists and professionals to neighbouring schools,” says Kimber. “One of the most encouraging shifts we’ve seen is the rise in questions from parents about neurodiversity. These conversations often spark
something powerful: a plan that builds toward a future where children are not only supported but able to integrate meaningfully into society.”
As a registered Non-Profit Organisation, EDU360 welcomes community involvement in many forms, from volunteering to financial support. “We’re always looking for meaningful ways to connect our students with the working world. If you’re part of a company or community group and would like to get involvedthrough funding, volunteering, or collaboration- we’d love to hear from you,” Kimber notes.
Despite ambitious plans, Kimber and her team remain grounded in what matters most: the students themselves. “It’s our students who make everything worthwhile. Many arrived earlier this year feeling anxious, misunderstood, or uncertain about school. Watching them grow in confidence, enjoy learning, and look forward to each day is deeply moving.”

South African singer-songwriter Louise Carver shares her journey in music, tour highlights, and what drew her to Ballito.
Ballito is home to a lot of amazing people, and even more are moving to experience slow living in the beautiful coastal town. Singer-songwriter, performer and entrepreneur, Louise Carver is one of the latest additions to the area. “I’ve been in the music industry since I was 15. My debut single, ‘It Don't Matter’, was released when I was 17, becoming a radio hit,” Louise shares. Since then, she has been on an incredible music journey. She released multiple albums, toured internationally, collaborated with talented producers, and even had two Billboard No.1 hits! “Outside of music, I run Louise Carver Collection - a passion project that’s grown into a full business, offering elegant, handcrafted jewellery and a clean beauty range,” she says.
Her hometown is Cape Town. It is where she discovered her love for
music and served as the starting point for her artistic journey. She started out playing classical piano and trained for singing opera; however, she loved writing her own music from a young age. “It gave me emotional freedom. It’s always been my way of processing life and connecting with others,” Louise muses.
Living in South Africa and abroad, each place gave her something different to take away, growing with every experience. “Cape Town nurtured my creativity, Jo’burg encouraged my drive and resilience, and international travel stretched my perspective,” she reflects. After moving around, Ballito felt like the right next move to make, “It’s peaceful, full of natural beauty, and has a creative buzz that really excites me. I wanted a base that supported both my artistic and entrepreneurial sides, and Ballito ticked every box.”
The North Coast has seen rapid development and is still growing into a bustling hub, whilst keeping its coastal town charm. This is also what drew Louise to choose Ballito as her home. “I was drawn to the ocean, the slower pace, and the welcoming community,” she explains. She finds the area to have a grounding quality that helps her recharge in between shows and projects, and loves seeing the changes happening around her. “The development is exciting. I think it’s great to see new people and businesses investing in the area. As long as it’s done thoughtfully and sustainably, growth can bring amazing opportunities.” It’s a place where families, creatives, and businesses thrive, a great place to come back to after a country-wide tour.
Louise’s Crush On You tour kicked off in Muldersdrift in Johannesburg, heading inland from the coast. Ballito
was later on the tour, which caught her at the Lyric Lounge. “It’s an intimate, soulful venue and so easy to get to,” she remarks. They had built a grand piano shell for her performance, so her electric piano had the classical look to go with the music, a rare type of support from venues. The tour took her to five provinces before returning to Ballito.
“I was drawn to the ocean, the slower pace, and the welcoming community,”
connection, escape, and joy. I want people to leave the show feeling lighter, inspired, and reconnected to the magic of music and having a great night out.”
The tour name, Crush on You, is inspired by Louise's new single by the same name. “The song is inspired by that thrilling, almost irrational excitement of having a crush - the butterflies, the buzz, and the fun of it all. I was surprised to feel that energy again later in life, and I wanted the song to capture that playful spirit,” Louise expresses. She collaborated with Simz Kulla and went for a nostalgic 70s or 80s aesthetic, inspired by the sounds of Blondie with a modern twist of her own. “The tour itself is about @louise_carver
The tour wrapped up in Mpumalanga, a magical location with Louise heading back to Ballito, “I really look forward to coming home, slowing down, and letting the experience settle. To exhale, reflect, and recharge. There’s truly no better place to go after weeks on the road.” I think most of us can agree when returning home to Ballito. There’s no place quite like it.

Our furry family members deserve the best care. They spend their lives with us, and we are often the centre of their worlds. Understanding that pet parents in Ballito get busy, and recognising the need to provide highquality pet care solutions for small dog breeds, Dogtopia Doggie Daycare and Hotel integrated with Collar and Comb to provide a one-of-a-kind service and a second home for pups. Combining professional grooming with a safe space for boarding and daycare, it’s become a place where dogs can socialise, exercise, and be pampered, all under one roof.
So, what can you expect from them when you drop off your pup? They offer a range of services tailored to small breed dogs, keeping them happy and safe. You receive a warm welcome from the team and a meet-and-greet to ensure dogs are suited for the open play environment. At the daycare, dogs can enjoy a structured day full of activities: playing with other dogs, exercise, and time in water and sand pits while being monitored by dedicated Pup Guardians. Dogs follow a home-style
schedule that includes naptime and feeding, and are grouped by size, temperament, and play style. When it comes to overnight stays, they have cage-free boarding, with 24-hour supervision and security, ensuring your precious pups are safe. Throughout their stay, there are customised feeding schedules and engaging activities to keep them stimulated until you come to fetch them. Of course, they can also be pampered by Collar and Comb during their stay.
To have a safe and cohesive environment, there are requirements furry members must meet like being part of a small breed, for example, Yorkshire Terriers, Corgis and French bulldogs. Puppies visiting must be over four-months-old, and be spayed/ neutered if they are older than six months, with all of their up-todate vaccinations. To maintain a pleasant and harmonious experience for all pups, they must be social and non-aggressive. For grooming, Collar and Comb do not require the meet-and-greet behavioural assessments, but dogs should be manageable for grooming processes and have vaccination records.
It’s difficult to leave your beloved pup in someone else’s care, but Dogtopia’s care processes incorporate benefits for dogs in their care. Interacting with other dogs and humans in a supervised setting will develop social interaction, confidence, and manners, improving their behaviour at home and in public. Stimulating exercise activities like running, chasing, and water playtime promote physical health and reduce the risk of obesity.
Combining professional grooming with a safe space for boarding and daycare, it’s become a place where dogs can socialise, exercise and be pampered, all under one roof
They also engage in play in sandpits and themed events, which stimulate them mentally and prevents boredom, and curbs destructive behaviours at home.
Pup Guardians monitor them and intervene at the sight of any disruptions. They integrate basic education and reinforce positive behaviours that the dogs learn through interacting with other
dogs and humans. Partnering with Andy Ording from Canine Coaching, they host sessions with various levels of training on Sunday mornings.
For people going away or visiting Ballito during the upcoming holiday season, Dogtopia and Collar and Comb are available to assist. Before travelling, ensure your dog has all of their vaccinations, including Kennel Cough, and consider a trial daycare setting if your dog isn’t used to socialising with others. Carry your dog’s favourite toys, blanket, or sock they stole from you to help them adjust better to the hotel stay and inform them of your dog’s feeding schedule with any special instructions, and groom your dog before or after boarding to ensure that they are comfortable, especially in Ballito’s humid climate.
Dogtopia and Collar Comb are open year-round for boarding, kennel services, and grooming for those lastminute Christmas party plans. Make sure to call in advance to book and find out their holiday trading times.

Swoon is a new spa at the Zimbali Nexus house, where you get to step into pure luxury. The Swoon team might be newly formed, but they have some good experience amongst themselves and are excited to treat their clients. Owned by a Ballito local, there's solid backing and a familiar face behind the spa.
We were invited to go experience some of Swoon’s offerings and to indulge in some pampering. With a warm welcome, Roxy and I were shown to our
comfy chairs, where we began with a pedicure. Thobile was the one looking after me and she did a great job at making sure I felt at ease and that my feet got the full treatment they deserve - the whole pedi was really soothing and relaxing and got me thoroughly ready for the massage that was coming next. Nobuhle looked after Roxy and she was just as happy with the outcome of her pedi and gel toe nails - all in all a very good start!
Relaxed and with my new gorgeous feet done, I was then taken to the private beauty/treatment room,
where Slindile was going to pamper me with a hot stone massage, focusing on my back, neck, and shoulders, as well as my legs. Not long after opening my first venture, a customer once told me, “I come here because I feel like family.” That single sentence reshaped how I understood business: people don’t just return for products or services, they return for how you make them feel.
Kindness, often dismissed as “soft,” is in fact one of the hardest-working skills in business. It attracts new customers, retains loyal ones, and builds resilient teams that perform under pressure. From the smile behind the counter to the attention paid to a client’s smallest detail, kindness becomes the invisible thread that strengthens every interaction.
Yet kindness isn’t confined to customer service. It has just as much power in industries often considered technical, competitive, or high-stakes. Leading with empathy in negotiations, showing patience when solving challenges, or respecting the needs of a partner doesn’t dilute professionalism; it elevates it. These seemingly small gestures compound over time, transforming once-off interactions into longterm collaborations.
When integrated deliberately into strategy, kindness becomes a growth engine. A thoughtful gesture toward a customer builds trust that sparks referrals and repeat visits. A culture of kindness within teams inspires productivity, creativity, and retention because people feel valued, not replaceable. Even in challenging negotiations, approaching with empathy and fairness often turns short-term gains into lasting partnerships.
Kindness is not a weakness; it is one of the most powerful levers for sustainable success. Whether you are starting a new venture, scaling an established business, or exploring fresh ideas, embedding kindness into your business model sets you apart in ways competitors cannot easily replicate. It is the difference between being seen as just another provider and being embraced as a trusted brand that communities rally around.
In a world that often glorifies speed and disruption, the most enduring advantage may be the simplest: lead with kindness. When you do, hard results inevitably follow, not by chance, but by design.
So why is kindness so often overlooked in business strategy? Because it resists traditional measurement. Companies can track revenue, efficiency, and growth, but they rarely quantify humanity. And yet, it is kindness that fuels loyalty, lowers staff turnover, and creates the kind of reputation no marketing campaign can replicate. A competitor may match your price or imitate your product, but they can't replicate the way people feel when engaging with your business. As South Africa sheds its winter coat and embraces the vibrant energy of spring, the property market awakens with renewed vigour. For sellers on the North Coast, this season presents a prime opportunity to capitalise on the increased activity and achieve the best possible price for their homes. Here are the top recommendations to ensure your home stands out in a competitive market:
Pricing: The Cornerstone of a Successful
Regardless of how meticulously a property is presented, an inflated price tag acts as an immediate deterrent. In today's discerning market, overpriced homes languish unsold, while correctly priced properties attract attention and offers. Partner with an experienced and established real estate agent to conduct a thorough comparative market analysis, factoring in recent sales of similar properties in your area. Additionally, be mindful of the competition for your home from other properties also on the market. Be realistic about your home's value, taking into account its condition, size, location, and any unique selling features. Remember, an accurate price attracts more interest and often leads to a quicker, more profitable sale.
Crafting a Captivating Sense of Arrival
First impressions are indelible, and the exterior of your property sets the stage for the entire viewing experience. With the warmer growing season upon us, now is the time to enhance your landscaping. Invest in vibrant flowers, manicured lawns, and neatly trimmed shrubs to create a welcoming and visually appealing entrance. This will exude a sense of pride and instantly elevate the perceived value of your home. Power wash driveways and walkways to remove grime and ensure a clean, inviting approach.
Uncluttering and Cleaning: A Sanctuary for the Senses
A tidy home creates a sense of spaciousness and tranquillity, allowing potential buyers to
envision themselves living in the space. Thoroughly clean every room, paying attention to details such as windows, floors, and fixtures. Declutter ruthlessly: remove excess furniture, personal items, and anything that distracts from the home's inherent beauty. Consider storing these items off-site to maximise space and create a minimalist, pleasant atmosphere.
The Magic of the Three "R's": Repair, Replace, and Repaint
Before listing your property, meticulously address any areas requiring attention. Implement the three magic "R's":
• Repair anything that is broken, from leaky faucets to cracked tiles. These small repairs demonstrate your commitment to maintaining the property and prevent potential buyers from being deterred by seemingly minor issues.
• Replace outdated or worn items that detract from the home's overall appeal. Consider updating light fixtures, doorknobs, and cabinet hardware to give the property a fresh, modern feel.
• Repainting can dramatically transform a room, making it appear brighter, cleaner, and more appealing. Choose light neutral colours that appeal to a broad range of tastes, creating a blank canvas for potential buyers to envision their own décor.
By focusing on these few pointers, North Coast sellers can position their properties for success this spring and achieve the best possible price in the market. Remember, preparation is key to unlocking the full potential of your home's value.
