NOTE Here are a few stories I’ve picked out from this edition that I think you’ll really enjoy.

I

t’s a fresh, autumn morning. There’s a nippy breeze swirling around that’s just on the wrong side of ‘cool’. While I sip on my cappuccino, looking out over a view that stretches for miles over misty hills in the distance, all that’s going through my head is: “Life is good." This is the setting for me to start writing my Editor's letter. Not bad, right?

I often say that I’m one of those people whose mood is affected by their environment. I’m not sure if it’s a good or bad thing - but this morning, with coffee in hand while reading through the stories in the final version of the magazine before it heads off to print, I’ve got to say it’s all put me in a really good mood.

Environment will do that for you, but so will good stories, especially if they draw you in or share insight into the places you drive past every day or about the people you wave at but don’t know as well as you’d like to. I like how good stories deliver on a promise (an enticing headline) and have you turning the page saying, “Wow! I didn’t know that!” or “Ah, that’s who those people are. How awesome!”.

I’ve said it before and reckon I’ll keep saying it for years to come: the Midlands is a gold mine of good - no, great - stories.

“Dynamic Duos” looks at fabulous business ventures run by mother-daughter and father-son duos. We chat with them about the highlights, advantages and challenges of working together on shared dreams or passions. We’re delighted to feature an old friend and his family. Tim is quickly becoming a new pillar of the Midlands. As relative newbies to the area, we chat with the Johnson family about why they decided to move to the Midlands and how they've become involved in the community.

We also cover the journey of going for the Gold Level of The President’s Award by a local Michaelhouse student, and we unpack the significant history of Old Halliwell in “A Local Landmark”. Oh, and don’t miss the Fordoun piece either! Richard took us on a tour of the property, which is so special.

We also got to catch up, briefly, with Jon as he shared the farm’s history, which was so insightful and definitely needs more telling.

FINDING FULFILLMENT WORDS KATE BOTHA It’s Monday morning. So it begins...

“Eat your breakfast!”

“Hurry up!”

“Not now!”

At school, we all spill out of the car. I’m running - one child racing ahead and the other lagging behind. Then I’m back in my car, and I breathe heavily. I hear the voice. The one that chides me, telling me I’m always late and I’ll never change.

Then the other, making seemingly “justifiable” yet weak excuses.

After lunch, the thought of dinner hangs over my weary head and my mental load is teetering over to one side. After bedtime, I know the dishes, the washing and the general life mess will be there like Ol’ Faithful. I sit down, survey the damage, and question whether this is what life should be. When was the last time I looked my kids in the eye and listened, really listened? Why did my heart ache when I, caught off guard, realised how much they’d grown?

As moms, we feel a lot of guilt, sadness and regret. Is it because we’re actually doing a bad job? Or, is it because we have high motherhood standards, dreamt up even before kids? Social media does us no favours, telling us that our kids need 40 hugs a day to be a functional human and no more sugar if we care for their health.

Have we elevated the role of “mother” to “entertainer”, “chef”, “treat giver”, “taxi driver to the gym, ballet, polo, sax lessons” and so forth,

all in the name of “Best Mom” or, dare I say, “Worthy Mom?” What makes us “worthy”? How many opportunities we give our children? How many hours we play with them? How much money we spend trying to please them? What if we never attain that level of perfection, even in their eyes? If we are seeking that, dear, fellow mom, we will be crushed when we don’t “make it”.

What if our worth is not in what the kids (or other moms) think of us but in something less fallible?

Let’s strive to be nurturing, loving moms and give ourselves grace when we behave like regular humans. We can confess to our “mess-ups” yet believe that we - you and I - are wonderfully made and designed to be their mom. Take heart, Mommy!

Lift your eyes upwards and find your worth in something unwavering. In all you do, you are loved and adored - not for what you’ve done but for who you are!

By comparison, Amazon’s web services grew by only 12% and Google Cloud, which is much smaller, grew by 22%.” On top of these unbelievable numbers, Microsoft is also utilising Azure to create generative AI applications. Its shares have recently hit an all-time high and are set to go even higher. “It is hard to find other shares that are more compelling

as Microsoft’s on a growth and riskadjusted basis,” William adds. Another great opportunity for investors is ARM, the designer of architecture used in about 99% of all smartphones and other devices.

Its shares increased by 25% on their first day of trading! Although its turnover and profitability have decreased in the last 12 months, its recent ventures with Apple and NVIDIA secure the company’s bright future.

William notes that Apple is also a “dark horse” to look out for when investing in tech companies.

icturesque St John's Village Lifestyle & Retirement Country Estate is drawing a diverse array of residents seeking a gentler pace of life. This estate has become a haven for retirees, returnees, young families and creative professionals, all united by a desire for a more self-sufficient and fulfilling lifestyle.

The community is a tapestry of rich histories and engaging personalities. Many of the residents, third or fourth-generation farmers from the Midlands, delight in regaling the community with captivating tales (and a touch of nostalgia) from St John’s heritage, including the Hyslop family who first arrived in Howick in the 1880s.

The Hyslop family’s farm, St John's Farm, is the source of the estate's name, and the original farmhouse, once a mission station, still stands today. One of Howick’s oldest lifelong residents, William Hyslop rode everywhere on horseback in the early small town with just one garage, a grocery store, a chemist, a doctor's office, a police station, and a magistrate's court to serve the community.

Resident Mary Carlisle and her late husband, Avison, arrived in the Midlands in the early 1980s, drawn by their desire for a carefree country life for their four young children. Today, she is the current Chairperson of the much-loved Midlands Forum. Founded in 1981 with the aim of bringing a wide range of interesting and unusual speakers to address the members, Mary not only continues to inspire, educate and entertain members by inviting speakers such as master storyteller Rob Caskie, but she has also expanded the membership by gently transitioning members from monthly in-person meetings to “at-home drinks at 6:00 p.m.” meetings on Zoom. These sessions enrich the lives of Forum members, and their subscriptions fund an annual bursary for one very deserving Howick High matric pupil who has excelled in their field.

Also drawn to the rich soils, good climate and warmth of the community is Naomi Hailstones, a landscaper whose vibrant, impressionistic landscapes have delighted and inspired many. She now dedicates her life to cultivating lush gardens on the estate and preserving the delicate ecosystems that thrive within them. Her

encyclopedic knowledge of the local flora and fauna and contagious love for the natural world has inspired many others to appreciate and enjoy gardening. Returnees Adam and Jean Langbridge, after many years in New Zealand, have been warmly welcomed to St John's Village. Their charming new home, coupled with Jean’s creative culinary skills and Adam’s gardening enthusiasm, is a happy hub where family and new friends gather to enjoy delicious meals and entertaining company.

Irene Nichols, a retired industrial chemist, now delights in growing vegetables and crafting delicious cheeses on the estate. Harold, Irene's husband and an avid model train enthusiast, has designed and set up an intricate, computer-driven model train set, the envy of any tech-savvy enthusiast.

The diversity of residents within St John’s Village is truly remarkable. Whether they're pursuing their passions, sharing their expertise, or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings, they exemplify what it means to live a life of purpose, creativity and connection.

We are one of several musical family permutations that include all the Webster kids and a musically inclined and talented mum. Music is a long-standing family tradition and allows us to express our father-son relationship. It's provided a useful additional income source but remains a part-time venture.

Kelly (daughter) grew up around the business. By high school, she knew this was the business for her.

Noel and Justin Otto TELL US MORE ABOUT HOW YOU STARTED POWER BRAHMAN After 30 years in the retail industry, I (Noel/ dad) wanted to follow my passion for farming cattle. Justin (son) had been working with me in the retail industry for three years when I got an offer from a listed company interested in purchasing my business. We now have a mixed farming operation with a Brahman Stud and commercial mixed herd and plant about 200 hectares of maize or soya. We also have a tourism aspect and are in the process of finishing our third cottage on the farm.

Justin and I have fished and hunted together since he was in nappies, so it was a natural progression that we wanted to share our passion for genetics and farming.

WHAT ROLES DO YOU EACH PLAY IN YOUR BUSINESS? DO YOUR ROLES OVERLAP OR IS IT BEST TO KEEP THEM SEPARATE? Justin is now in charge of the farm. We have a farming consultant, Emma Niland from Intelact Beef, who acts as a referee if there is friction between Justin and myself, assists us by listening to both sides and gives us an unbiased perspective.

WHAT ARE THE UPSIDES OF WORKING TOGETHER? There is 100% trust and respect between us and we know that we are working towards the same goals with the same passion and integrity.

ARE THERE ANY DOWNSIDES TO WORKING TOGETHER? HOW DO YOU NAVIGATE ANY CHALLENGES THAT MAY ARISE? There is a constant business environment and you have to value and respect family time. If there is unresolved conflict, it affects your business and personal relationships. For us, the game changer has been our independent consultant who understands the farming business and the dynamics of a family-run business.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER DAD-AND-SON DUOS WHO WANT TO GO INTO BUSINESS TOGETHER? Involve your children in all the decisionmaking. You are far more likely to reach your common goals if there has been input from both sides on how to achieve them.

Right from day one, Justin has been a 10% shareholder in the business and my feeling is that it motivated him to know he has had “skin in the game” since inception.

We get to experience the Land Rover Defender V8 for a day in the Southern Drakensberg and leave feeling a little corrupted- by power!

You feel there’s not a road that the Defender can’t tame. et’s get the usual Defender banter out of the way. No this is no way related to the old Defender. Yes it will probably be seen more in the Woolies parking lot than up Sani Pass, and yes, that’s a lot of money to spend on ground clearance for hopping curbs on the school run. With that out the way, let’s get down to business, because at the business end of this Defender is the range-topping, 386kW supercharged 5.0-litre V8.

Now I absolutely love the new Defender.

Growing up north of the Limpopo River, I have

original Defender, barrelling down dusty Mashonaland roads feeling every pebble vibrate through your spine, choking on dust and grit because you dare not close the windows in summer. The new Defender replaces that nostalgia with comfort, capability and just the right amount of technology. I honestly feel it the most balanced, true-to-purpose vehicle that Land Rover makes at the moment, and possibly the one I’d buy with my own money.

But here we are talking about the V8, and that’s where things get a little complicated.

Collecting the V8 Defender from Land Rover Pietermaritzburg, you notice that the exterior changes are pretty subtle. The discreet V8 badges and a quad-exhaust give a hint of something special.

Changes on the inside are also very subtle, but that’s OK, because the Defender interior is one of the most well-sorted around.

As we head onto the N3 out opportunity to experience all 386kW. Rapid is an understatement, mesmerising is a more appropriate description, because the very thought of 2.6 tonnes moving in this way is captivating. It’s not just the power, it the way that power is delivered. It’s easy and accessible and comes without any drama.

What I love most about the Defender, is the fact that it’s so easy to live with. The interior is purposeful, almost stripped down, and the quality of materials is spot on- just the right amount of luxury with the usual Land Rover durability. The exterior emulates purpose as well, with sturdy clean body panels and a reassuring weight to the doors. As a daily runner or an over-lander, the Defender wears both hats comfortably.

The road to Bushmans Nek gives us the opportunity to try the much talked about ‘Dynamic Mode’ setting. This drive mode stiffens the dampers, sharpens throttle response, and holds gears longer, making you feel like a rally-driver and leaving a spectacular autumn dust cloud behind.

We reach the R617 turn-off sooner that expected. Trucks and potholes aside, this is one of my favourite roads in the Midlands. The twists and curves of the road, and the beautiful East Griqualand countryside make the perfect backdrop for the Defender.

It’s here where you start to understand the idea behind the V8. Sure, you don’t really need this sort of power everyday, just the same way that you don’t need a 4x4 everyday. But for those rare occasions when you need both power and capability, the Defender makes you feel there’s not a road or terrain that it cannot tame.

After the obligatory stop at Picklepot Café to say hi to Diesel, the legendary Great Dane, and a quick toastie, we head on down the road,

The Bushmans Nek border post comes far too quickly. If we had a weekend with the Defender it would have been amazing to take it over the border and test its abilities, but for now, we will make do with a picnic on the banks of the Ngwangwane river.

In a roundabout way, this is what sums up the Defender V8 perfectly. You know it can tackle a district road after a Midlands thunderstorm, and can drop a German hatchback at the lights, but you’ll probably never use it to do that. It’s like the magnifying glass on your Swiss Army Knife. Chances are you’ll never get the chance to use it, but it’s there, and one day, when the stars align and the opportunity presents itself, you’ll be able to step forward and say “I’ve got this!.”

Lock in Your Love Bringing the Community Together WORDS ALICIA DU PLESSIS

T

he Hilton Quarry Centre is locking in more love in the Midlands with its Love Lock Arch initiative that launched earlier this year.

The inaugural event invited a wide range of guests to fasten heartshaped locks, with accompanying notes or their names written onto it, along the grid fixture around the yellow viewing frame, which is located past the Nino’s deck on the top-level gardens overlooking the beautiful scenic view.

The inspiration behind this new initiative originates from the famed Pont des Arts pedestrian bridge, otherwise known as the “Love Lock Bridge”, in Paris. It has been adorned with multitudes of locks fastened by thousands of passing visitors and tourists over the years.

But it’s not only in Paris where you’ll find these locks - they can be spotted in Rome and even on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York

City. This romantic tradition was believed to have either started in China or from a story of lost love between a Serbian couple, which caused many others to start “locking in their love” on the bridge where the couple reportedly used to meet.

The Quarry Centre has been one of the main shopping centres in Hilton for over 30 years and is always striving to give back to and involve the community to create a lasting impact. Its version of the Love Lock Arch is a loving gesture, so to say, to the surrounding community.

It also symbolises strength and reminds us all to keep sharing love and enjoying fun activities with our family and friends.

We caught up with the Johnsons to learn a bit about why they moved to the Midlands and how Nottingham Road has quickly become where they belong.

eet the Johnson family of four, Tim, Louisa and their two sons, Todd (13 years old) and Angus (10 years old), who live in Gowrie Village in Nottingham Road. The Midlands has always been a popular destination for families to lay down their roots, which was exactly what they did nearly four years ago when they moved from the North Coast to the countryside.

In 2020, the family spent the lockdown period with Louisa’s parents, outside Nottingham Road. Soon afterward, they decided to make a change and give their children a similar experience to the one they enjoyed in their childhood growing up in the small, tight-knit communities of Ballito and Hillcrest. “The lifestyle and spending more quality time together was the biggest drawcard,” shares Tim about their Midlands move.

Tim owns Local Real Estate, which has branches on the North Coast and in the Eastern Cape and Midlands area.

Louisa is a high school teacher who has taught in the UK and New Zealand and at schools in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

Although it was never their intention to become involved in the local education sector, the couple, along with a few close family members, saw an opportunity and need for a new, innovative school. They made the bold move to conceptualise and open Carlyle College, a pre-primary, preparatory and high school in Nottingham Road, in January 2023. Their goal was to provide high-quality yet more affordable independent education. They also felt compelled to raise their kids with the skills, characteristics and values to succeed in an uncertain and all too fast-paced world. What better way than to start their own school?

“Opening Carlyle has filled us with a renewed sense of purpose and pride. We have embraced a new role to service and add value to the community, deliver an amazing educational experience, and give our boys and other students the best possible foundation to be happy, curious and prepared for the real world,” says Tim and Louisa.

When the Johnsons are left to their own devices, they enjoy spending time outdoors. Tim loves playing golf at Gowrie Golf Club or doing some trail running. Louisa is a keen gardener and cultivates her flower beds and vegetable garden at home and around the Carlyle campus, where she also oversees the academic administration. Their two boys enjoy playing with their dogs, Biscuit and Molly, and love swimming, mountain biking, golf and reading.

We asked the Johnson family what advice they have for other families who are thinking of moving to the Midlands.

For them, the decision to move relies on several factors, namely determining what your priorities are in terms of healthcare, education, convenience, proximity to shopping centres and even your family networks and friends.

“Spend some time in the area before making a decision, ask lots of questions, travel the various roads and routes, and keep an open mind. When you make the move, get involved in the community. Give back. Embrace the country life and new opportunities to grow. Be a tourist in your hometown,” Tim suggests.

The Johnsons are driven by two core values: community and family.

They believe this is what makes the Midlands so special. It’s a place where their boys can just be boys and play and explore to their heart’s content, where others share similar priorities and seek a balanced lifestyle, where people genuinely help one another, and where a buzzing entrepreneurial spirit keeps the heart of the community beating, even if it may not seem so for those who don’t live here.

We are delighted the Johnson family has made the Midlands their home and embrace the values that keep our countryside community passionate and caring for one another. In the end, it is the people who make the place.

We take a look at the start of The Midlands Wellness Festival and how it aspires to educate and uplift our community to lead healthier lives and seek true inner and outer well-being.

I

f you want to achieve holistic health, The Midlands Wellness Festival is a must.

Running from 7 June to 7 July 2024, it is an event worth celebrating because it offers something uniquely different from your usual festival, focusing on all things holistic well-being.

In its second year, the festival brings together a wide variety of practitioners and wellness advocates who all share the common goal of raising awareness and educating people about health and healing technologies and modalities, as well as supporting small wellness businesses. What makes it even more fun is that it is not hosted in one

location but several venues throughout the Midlands area where participants can have hands-on experiences, from yoga, Qi Gong, cooking demos, labyrinth walks, sound healing and massages to slow food experiences, sustainable garden tours, forest therapy, mindfulness walks and so much more.

Organised and built by the community and for the community, The Midlands Wellness Festival has received support from App City and Antbear Eco-Lodge, who helped put the website together, and TMI Business Solutions and Learning Through Nature, who help with the administration and business aspects.

The Midlands Meander Association has taken care of the closing activities, and The Old Mushroom Farm will host the closing.

Other members of the community assist with content creation and marketing.

The Midlands Wellness Festival is part of The Wellness Association, which has over 200 members consisting of health practitioners and people interested in holistic living. Perhaps you’re wondering where this initiative originated. It was started in 2018 by Jessica Gird, one of our beloved locals.

Jessica comes from a career in nature conservation and environmental education,

and it’s no secret that her passion is deeply rooted in nature and all things wellness. Throughout her life, she’s learnt a few lessons, among these is “nature doesn’t need healing, we do”, which led her to study NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming), EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), family and business constellations and Qi Gong, among other subjects.

Her success with embodiment techniques has led her to create similar healing experiences for others.

She was inspired to start The Wellness Association because of her own experiences and the powerful effects that these healing modalities have had on her life.

She also felt that not enough people knew about the different types of modalities out there and creating a platform to put it all in one place could not only make it more accessible but promote these businesses.

The idea of synergy and cooperation - a whole that becomes greater than its parts - is what led her to the idea to start The Midlands Wellness Festival, which is a fitting event that perfectly encapsulates the healing practice of embodiment for the community as a whole.

The theme for this year’s festival is regenerative living. Celebrating 60 Years

of Faith and Adventure in Education

T

reverton is a school birthed in faith, established in community and grown through sacrifice and service.

Treverton Preparatory School for Boys was established in 1939 by Mr Peter Binns.

While teaching at the old King’s School in Nottingham Road, Mr Binns saw the opportunity to start a Preparatory School for Boys in Mooi River. Treverton flourished under Peter Binns, but his death in 1959, aged 54, spelled the end of his beloved school. In 1961, the doors of Treverton closed and the remaining pupils were sent to finish their education at Clifton Notties, where they named their dormitory “Treverton” in honour of where they came from.

For many years, Dr Sydney Hudson-Reed, a former teacher and then President of the Baptist Union of South Africa, had cherished the vision of establishing a Christian School. Through work within the Baptist Union and extensive consultations

with educational experts, a non-profit company was formed called The Christian Education Fellowship.

A memorandum was drawn up that clearly described that the chief purpose of establishing a school would be to provide a thorough Christian education and to train Christian leaders for the church and the country. Support started coming in towards this vision. Supporters, later known as “Living Stones”, were thus enrolled, and they pledged to pray for the school and give materially towards the project.

In 1961, Sydney Hudson-Reed received a letter announcing the closure of Peter Binns’s Treverton and subsequent sale listing. Finally, an appropriate site on which to launch his vision was available and the miraculous story of Treverton’s resurrection began. This story of phenomenal growth over the past 60 years, and how it developed to become the ‘Gordonstoun’ of South Africa, is best

heard as you stroll around the 270-hectare campus, equestrian centre and wildlife area.

From enrolling girls in 1978 to developing the campus with the help of students, affectionately known as “Grounds”, the school’s focus has never deviated from its mission of providing a balanced, all-round, quality education based on a strong Christian foundation.

Treverton has a proud history. Its alumni include colourful and powerful contributors in all spheres of life, and its student body represents multiple nations. Its motto is unchanging: Super Astra Spero, reminding us to put our hope in that which is beyond the stars.

Old Halliwell A Local Landmark WORDS ALICIA DU PLESSIS

I

t’s no surprise that the Midlands rests on a foundation filled with history and memories, from Nottingham Road and Fort Nottingham to Karkloof, Dargle and Curry’s Post, to name a few. One of these monuments includes the Old Halliwell Inn. It is over a century old, built between 1837 and 1840, and had its beginnings as a farmhouse. This was when the Voortrekkers entered these local areas in the mid-1830s. The Boers who lived in these parts moved further north due to the British annexation of Natal in 1843, which left farmhouses available.

It was believed that Reverand William Davis owned the Old Halliwell building, but back then it was named “Rommelkop”, reportedly after the highest point on the south side of the property.

DID YOU KNOW: Old Halliwell’s all-stone walls are not all made equal. The north wall is 60 centimetres thick, the southfacing wall is 111 centimetres, the other walls are 80 centimetres, and the chapel Nee smithy are 65 centimetres.

There is also a natural spring that runs on the property to this day, which is believed to be part of the reason why the Voortrekkers chose this location. Reverend Davis ran the building as a posting house for coaches on the old main road to the north, which interestingly predates Curry’s Post. Old Halliwell has had many changes of ownership over the years.

Louis Stevens bought it in January 1855 from the Reverend William Davis and renamed it “Stevens Pub” or “Stevens Canteen”. You can now find the entrance doors as the bar’s counter. It was known by Hout Bosch Rand in 1872 and owned by a Dobson, who was a carpenter on the ship called the HMS Birkenhead.

Mr Buchanan bought it in 1900. He was a blacksmith from Scotland and the chapel used to be his smithy (the term used for a blacksmith’s workshop). In 1928, the property was utilised as a dairy, bought by Mr Nel, who then sold it to Mr Hofman, who renamed it “Veehof”. He also eventually sold the land, which was reportedly 1500 acres, into subdivisions that were around 250 acres in size.

Dr James McCall and his wife, Sally, bought the plot with the main homestead in 1971.

This was known as Halliwell, which eventually became “Old Halliwell”. During this time, several reconstructions were done to the main house and the two rooms that formed the upstairs area. In 1988, new owners Nick and Gill Bastow converted the house into a country inn which was opened in 1991. There

were also several conversions, notably the stables and outbuildings, which were made into en-suite rooms with verandas and fireplaces. The Bones family bought it in 1999, after which it was purchased by the current owners Mike and Jane Uys in 2003 who created the Old Halliwell rest home for horses. They also offer a 400-square-metre venue to accommodate conferences and weddings, a restaurant open seven days a week and a swimming pool on the property.

Some of the parts of the house hold historical significance. For example, the entrance’s arched doorway was from the old Maritzburg hotel and the door’s iron lock has a brass escutcheon plate with the

Royal Coat of Arms and the letters “WR” on it, which relates to King William IV’s reign during 1834. The staircase is from the home of the Blackhurst family who lived on Ridge Road in Umhlanga.

The Old Halliwell Inn has become an iconic monument here in the Midlands, from an 1800s farmhouse to a beautifully decorated hotel and idyllic spot for weddings and conferences. What is The President’s Award, you may ask? It’s a non-competitive programme of varying levels for enthusiastic teens and young adults, derived from the Duke of Edinburgh International Award. Each level - Bronze (minimum period of six months), Silver (minimum period of six months) and Gold (minimum period of 12 months) - involves completing criteria in various areas, including volunteer work, physical recreation, skills and an adventurous journey.

When you achieve your goals in all categories, you receive an official certificate signed by the South African President.

“The President’s Award wants to challenge young people to serve their communities, experience adventures and develop and learn outside the classroom,” says Brunton. “They aim to create a balanced programme of voluntary, self-development activities to help participants through the potentially difficult period of adolescence.”

On top of that, the award is recognised internationally for developing skills such as resilience, adaptability, creativity, problemsolving, communication and leadership, and it looks great on CVs and university applications!

Brunton embarked on his President’s Award journey to challenge himself to reach the final level. A lot of hard work and dedication goes into completing the Award, and he has put his all into realising his goal. For the Gold Level, he must spend 52 hours learning a skill. “I have chosen hunting proficiency for this category.

As my 52 hours of physical recreation, hockey has provided more than enough experience.” On top of that, he must complete an ‘adventurous journey’ over four days and three nights. His school helped him out for this section, as part of the Michaelhouse Grade 10 curriculum includes a two-week trip where all the students complete an 80-kilometre farm walk, 120-kilometre cycle and 50-kilometre canoe on the Thugela River as well as summit Giant’s Castle in the Drakensberg.

The Gold Award also includes a ‘residential project’. “We are encouraged to broaden our experience through involvement with others in an unfamiliar setting and complete a shared activity together over five days. I completed this during the April holidays at a game reserve in Thabazimbi where I got involved in wildlife conservation.”

Brunton’s passions really shine through in the voluntary service section. He has decided to spend 52 hours refurbishing secondhand sports equipment to donate to underprivileged children. “For the last five or six years, I have been running my own business refurbishing sports equipment. I adapted this for my community service project by using some of the profits to fund new grips for cricket bats and hockey sticks and then donate them to schools and communities in need.” He will have large collection bins at the derby day between Hilton and Michaelhouse on 15 June and appeals to locals to donate their secondhand sports gear, from outgrown cricket bats and hockey sticks to tennis rackets, sports accessories and shoes.

“Currently, I am taking a group of boys at Michaelhouse every second week to run a

training session with outreach schools and donate some equipment. Hopefully, we will be able to expand this to more schools on a more regular basis and continue the project after my President’s Award is complete.”

Receiving this prestigious award is no easy feat and requires extensive time management to fulfill the requirements of the Gold Level and stay on top of school work. “I have chosen my activities quite strategically. They complement my interests and strengths. It has been challenging to balance all the activities but I focus on what needs to be done and plan my time well,” Brunton says. Michaelhouse has also been supporting his journey, with a dedicated staff member who helps with the programme and oversees all aspects of his Award.

Brunton encourages all high school students to sign up for The President’s Award. “It broadens your perspectives and challenges you in a healthy and constructive way. It also teaches you

simple but valuable skills such as recordkeeping, time management and planning.”

With plans to continue his voluntary service project and play hockey (and perhaps eventually become a wildlife vet!), we can’t wait to see what other amazing accomplishments Brunton is yet to achieve.

ordoun Hotel and Spa is a little (not so little) piece of heaven that is one of the most relaxing spots we’ve ever experienced!

After being welcomed by the super efficient and friendly staff, we were quickly shown to room number three. What a view! The rooms are large and comfortable with a full bathroom en-suite, which is ideal for a person who loves to relax in a bath. The hotel comprises 22 luxurious, comfortable, individually styled rooms and the relatively new self-catering farm village offering 11 fully equipped cottages, a chapel and a wedding/conference venue. With panoramic views of the Drakensberg, Fordoun provides a tranquil country setting.

session, we experienced a “first” the floatation tank. The relaxing blue lights were an incredible start to the treatment, followed by 30 minutes of complete relaxation, floating and underwater whale sounds!

Float therapy helps you relax, reduces anxiety, improves sleep quality and aids in muscle recovery. Next, we went for our full body massages. It was perfection, and the hour went by way too fast! We then ended the afternoon with a relaxing 30 minutes in the jacuzzi.

At 6:30 p.m., we went for dinner at the in-house restaurant. Wow! What an absolute treat! Their fine dining restaurant, Skye Bistro, uses only the freshest local produce available.

The variety of food on offer was perfect! We started with the Garlic Mussel Hot Pot and The Ox Liver and Roasted Baby Onions. For mains, we thoroughly enjoyed a Chicken and Prawn Curry (served with all the sides and accompaniments you want with great Curry) and I had a lighter meal of Grilled Kingklip, served with herbed Mash and seasonal Veg! To end this fantastic meal, we shared a Coffee Crème

The next morning, we decided on an early breakfast as I had a 9 a.m. treatment at the spa. There was a full spread available as well as a menu of hot items to choose from!

My next spa treatment was one I’d only ever experienced once before! Before getting started, Jenny explained the process of Bio Energy Rebalancing, the concept behind this “oldest form of healing” and its benefits to me. It’s a strange feeling to lie there while being energetically “worked on”. It follows the concept of treating and balancing the body as one complete unit of energy; body, mind and spirit; physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. After the treatment, she spoke to me about what she felt and released in

my body. We took our time packing up (and I sneaked in another quick bath) and enjoyed the vast open spaces, cows and ducks before heading out into the world again.

The brain, in particular, plays a central role in these processes, constantly working to detoxify our bodies and facilitate self-healing regulating functions such as toxin elimination through mechanisms like sweating and digestion.

However, the mind-body connection goes beyond mere physical processes. Our emotional experiences are also stored within our cellular memory, influencing how we feel, think and act. Just as the body can harbour physical toxins, it can also retain emotions. Eventually, these stored emotions can manifest in pain.

ore and more, I've been considering the trends impacting small towns and rural communities like in the Midlands.

Contemporary, urban development is evolving towards towns with good social capital, where good living conditions are key. Small towns and rural communities are looking for ways to strengthen their economies, provide a better quality of life, and build on local assets. Some rural communities and small towns are facing challenges, including rapid growth at metropolitan edges and loss of farms to development.

As a fast-growing rural area at the edge of a large metropolitan area, namely Maritzburg, we are facing development pressures and a constant battle to maintain our distinctive rural character. This is something I feel is very important for our local government, tourism authorities, civic organisations and commercial developers to consider.

Rural communities require three interconnected, baseline elements to thrive: ‘Sectors’, ‘Workforce’ and ‘Community & Connectivity’. Firstly, ‘Sectors’ refer to stable or growing tradable industries that bring wealth into communities, create employment and carry strong multiplier effects that support the economy. Thriving rural communities play to their region’s strengths, supporting sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, energy, tourism, healthcare and education.

Next is ‘Workforce’. People are the lifeblood of any community. A healthy, skilled workforce is the most important factor in attracting and retaining employers in key sectors. In addition, workers spread wealth and create additional jobs by buying goods and services.

Finally, we have ‘Community and Connectivity’. The most intangible element, this includes services and amenities critical to quality of life, such as transportation infrastructure and

access to broadband, healthcare, childcare and arts and culture. Because these assets support the workforce, they are essential to developing thriving sectors. It’s safe to say that our Midlands towns enjoy all three of these elements. There are also different types of rural archetypes which I believe are important to understand when it comes to branding ourselves and determining the most appropriate development plans. Firstly, Howick and Hilton can best be described as ‘Rural Service Hubs’. These are typically towns that are often close to highways or railways and home to manufacturing and service industries. Because these hub communities typically serve surrounding areas that are even more rural, they tend to specialise in industries such as retail, healthcare and education. We are seeing this play out in real time with the development of larger retail offerings, shopping centres, schools and healthcare facilities.

The second rural archetype is ‘Great Escapes’.

These are the smallest but most well-off of the rural archetypes, home to wealthy enclaves and tourist destinations. While their focus on tourism results in a number of lower-paying service jobs, their GDP, household income and educational attainment outpace their rural peers. Nottingham Road could fit into this category and as a result, the type of development that one might wish to focus on is important.

What is most important is to establish an understanding of what makes our community strong and desirable and what it values. Without a deep understanding of who your community is, you risk trading away what you want most, for what you want now. If you don’t know who you are, what your strengths and weaknesses are, and what you want your community to become, it makes it pretty difficult to position yourself.
