Trench Art originated during World War I, created by soldiers using spent brass shell casings during their free time, while recovering in hospitals, or even as prisoners of war. This distinctive art form offers a glimpse into the lives of these war heroes, who kept these creations as mementos, gifts, or sold them to support themselves financially. These two 77 mm solid brass vases from France and stamped “U.S.A.” on the bottom. They are substantial in weight, feature a fluted edge and floral designs, and stand 14 inches tall with a 3-inch base diameter. Restoration Gardens

How long have you been in business?

Our parent company Restoration Gardens has been in business over 22 years. Our Restoration Orchard and Market business opened September of 2024.

How did you get started?

Brian and I were both working in the industry for a number of years. We decided to purchase a historic farm property just outside of Kohler and renovate it to create a restaurant, garden center and landscape business. Ten years later we had outgrown the property and sold it to the Blind Horse for a winery and restaurant and moved to another farm property in Johnsonville.

What changes have you seen over the years open?

In our market we have seen a greater interest in customers supporting local farms and producers.

What do you love most about your industry?

So many of our like-minded retailers are willing to work together and collaborate and promote each other. Our market contains mostly food products produced in Wisconsin. We hold ‘Pop Up Markets’ throughout the summer where these farmers and producers do a great job in recruiting other farmers and producers.

Continued on page 16

The owners of Restoration Gardens talk about their business.

Adam's Friendship

Restoration Gardens

Continued from page 13

What are some of the common myths you come across in your business?

In our market we carry a lot of heirloom fruits and vegetables that are attractive and visually appealing. Not all fruits and vegetables look like what they see in a magazine, but even the unsightly ones are delicious.

What message would you most like to share with people?

Please support small businesses! The employees we have are wonderful and passionate about local food and do a great

job of promoting other farmers and producers in our area.

What would you like people to know about your business?

We practice sustainability and purchase locally whenever possible. Our product lines in our market are mostly from Wisconsin. What is the biggest compliment customers give to you?

We love hearing how beautiful the property is and how much they enjoy walking the orchards and viewing our pollinator gardens.

What are you most proud of?

We love seeing our regular customers coming in weekly to purchase produce and

grocery items. We are also proud that our customers enjoy trying new vegetables and fruits that are grown on our property and sampling some of the 115 varieties of apples that come from our orchard.

How many employees/family work with you?

Depending on the time of year, we have upwards of 20 people on staff. Brian and I each have a son working in our business and our wives play an active role when they have time outside of their full-time jobs. My mother comes in daily to help with secretarial and bookwork and wears many hats around the business

What are you most grateful for?

Not only do we have outstanding customers, we have terrific employees! A lot of them have been with us nearly since we started.

Does your business have any special events coming up in the future?

We have our first ‘Bavarian Apfel Fest’ on Sunday October 5th from 11-3. We will be sampling some of our German heirloom apples, tomatoes and other produce. We have a food truck, vendors and German music. At our Restoration Gardens ‘Christmas Barn’ location we will host our annual Christmas Open House on November 29th. Santa will be there and we will have live reindeer along with treats!

Who/what can you credit your success?

We are grateful and thankful to have supportive wives and family members that allow us to devote so many hours to a job we love! ~

Kelly’s POT PIES

Kelly’s Pot Pies Owner talks about her business.

How long have you been in business?

Since January 2021

How did you get started?

Kelly grew up working in her Mother’s and Grandmother’s Restaurant, The Patio Club. Their restaurant was located on 37th & Lincoln Ave in Milwaukee. After her Mother and Grandmother were gone, Kelly continued working in the food industry. After years of working for various Food Service Businesses, Kelly decided it was time to follow in her Grandmother’s footsteps and do her own thing.

Where did the recipes you use originate?

Most of them were family recipes from Kelly’s Mother, Grandmother and other family members or new creations of Kelly and her Kitchen Crew.

What changes have you seen over the years open?

The biggest change has been the increasing cost of ingredients and other overhead that goes along with running a small business.

What do you most Love about your Industry?

We love hearing from our customers how much they enjoy our products, which makes it all worth the hard work and love that goes into producing them.

What are some of the common myths you come across in your business?

That pot pies have to be your traditional Chicken, where we have created a number of more creative pot pies that people love. Most of our customers start with our Chicken and then return to venture out into others like our Turkey, Taco, Reuben, Veggie, Beef or even our latest Brat & Beer Tailgater Pot Pie and more.

What message would you most like to share with people?

In addition to our pot pies, we also offer a delicious Shepherds Pie, Hand Pies, a variety of Quiche, Cheesecake, Lemon Torte, Key Lime Pie, Almond Cookies and more. Give us a try and you’re sure to become another loyal customer. What would you like people to know about your business?

Our business is a family business, owned and operated by Kelly & Pat McGinnis of Waterford, WI. They are both hands on in the business, Kelly spends her days working directly with

her hard working kitchen crew. Her husband Pat handles the Marketing, Bookkeeping and managing the Farmers Market, Wholesale and Retail Sales areas. Their Son-N-Law, Pat Rock, manages the Greenfield Store and helps manage Wholesale Deliveries along with a variety other responsibilities. Kelly, Pat M. And Pat R. can also be found working the booth at farmers markets in addition to our dedicated Farmers Market Staff.

What is the biggest compliment customers give you?

When a customer loves our products so much that they feel compelled to refer their friends and family to us.

What are you most proud of?

How quickly we’ve been able to grow our business with the help of our dedicated staff.

How many employees/Family work with you?

We currently employ 32 hard working people, 3 of which are family members.

What are you most grateful for?

Our amazing staff or hard working individuals, many of which were loyal customers of ours before joining our team. Without the hard work and dedication of our staff, we could not have possibly grown our business to where it is today.

Who/what can you credit your success?

The majority of the credit to our success goes to our staff but in addition to them, we credit the new found appreciation of consumers for quality local products. We also owe much of our success to the community support of people like Victor Islami, owner of The Venue in East Troy, WI who took a chance on us by renting us commercial kitchen space when we first started out. Also, to Sarah Cain and Erica Stamm of Toothpicks Catering, who we currently share a Kitchen with.

Creating modern eclectic style with antiques & Flea Market Finds

Antiques

Lady head vases were used by florists from the early 1940s through the 1960s as a marketing tactic to sell their bouquets. They were successful, and popular enough that many different companies produced them from Napcoware, Enesco, Inarco, and the very desirable Betty Lou Nichols. Famous ladies were also imitated for a few of the vases, including Marilyn Monroe, and Jackie Kennedy. This particular head Vase is a beautiful hard to find piece standing 7.75” tall and is in excellent condition. Find it at Collector’s Cove Antique Mall in New Holstein on Main Street 2105. Open Thursday to Monday 10AM-5PM. CLOSED Tuesday and Wednesday
