Editor’s welcome It is difficult to know where to start with this summer edition of Petworth Pages. The country and indeed the global community has changed beyond recognition since our last issue. Much uncertainty surrounds us with our jobs, schools and wellbeing but despite this, amazing acts of kindness and stories of communities pulling together are shown in the Petworth Pages readership areas. Local businesses have had to respond at lightning speed to the changes around them and they haven't disappointed either, by offering delivery options where they haven't before or moving their businesses online.

Local businesses need your support more than ever and particularly when the country starts to come out of lockdown. Please be aware that information shown in this edition might again change by the time it drops through your door towards the end of the month. Finding new {old} ways of keeping in touch

Petworth Pages would like to know how you managed to find new ways to communicate with family, friends and work colleagues throughout the Covid-19 lockdown?

When the government announced the lockdown on Monday 23 March usual forms of meeting face-to-face ceased for the time being. Workers within companies started working from home, families were separated, children stayed at home and those who lived alone may have felt isolated.

In these tricky times there are a variety of ways of keeping in touch with your social groups without having to meet in person. These include: Zoom: A video conferencing application which has become the forerunner in the current environment for commercial and personal contacts to keep in touch zoom.us

Other ways to socialise online: Movie nights: Watch movies with friends in a socially-distant way! Use Netflix Party; Metastream, Scener or TwoSeven.

Game nights: Use one of the video conferencing apps to play quizzes with friends and family – even board games!

Charades? Or chess?

Book clubs: Just because you are unable to meet in person, there’s nothing to stop meeting online.

If you don’t have access to the internet or don’t feel confident about using this new technology then there is always the tried and tested telephone – then no-one knows that you are still in your pyjamas! A handwritten postcard or letter is also going to be appreciated by its recipient.

FaceTime: Connect with family and friends around the world with FaceTime. Make audio and video calls from your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to other iOS devices.

Chairman’s report Petworth Town Council has responded to the changes that Covid-19 has bought about.

Petworth Helpdesk

Are you self isolating? The Town Council are here to help the community and to ease the pressure on the surgery and the chemist, our team are currently collecting prescriptions and delivering medications to vulnerable residents.

Please call 01798 344883 anytime between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, to register your needs. We are also available to support the surgery and the chemist over the weekend, if needed.

We have created a new email address for residents to contact the helpdesk: CV19@petworth-tc.gov.uk. This has helped us recruit new volunteers who are kindly assisting with collecting and delivering medications. We have also been sent many drawings from local children which have been put up around the town.

The helpdesk currently has 90 volunteers and would be pleased to hear from others who may wish to support the local response effort. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered; we are so grateful to each and every one of you.

Harsha Desai, one of the helpdesk volunteers, explains that “We are not sure what each day brings, the phone can ring off the hook but we aim to help everyone on the day.

Massive thanks goes to our volunteers who have been great at coming forward and helping our community during this crisis”.

Food bank help

The Trussell Trust supports communities and churches to open foodbanks across the UK. Our foodbank is part of The Trussell Trust’s network of 428 foodbanks, working to tackle food poverty and hunger in our local communities, as well as across the UK. Bonfires

Petworth Town Council would request that allotment holders and residents do not have any bonfires whilst we are dealing with Covid-19. Do not burn waste under any circumstances. Smoke & smells from bonfires can aggravate respiratory problems such as asthma/bronchitis & affect those with heart complaints. Fires like this can quickly get out of control and is causing much nuisance to residents. We appreciate your co-operation with this matter.

PETWORTH TOWN COUNCIL Ash Dieback

By the time of publication we are hopeful that work on Ash Dieback will have taken place on London Road, Petworth and also at Northchapel. Some residents may be alarmed at the work that has taken place so we asked Neil Humphris, Leconfield Estates Head Forester to explain the necessity for the work: “Ash trees throughout the country are in decline and dying from Chalara ash dieback, which causes dieback of the tree crown and in most cases leads to the death of the tree and in conjunction with other fungal attacks, such as Honey fungus, can cause the trees to decay and fall over. The degree and speed of effect varies from tree to tree, but the best information we have at present, is that about 95% of the ash will die and even those that show tolerance to the disease will not be completely unaffected. We are already seeing increasing numbers of trees with decay within the trunks, crown dieback and fallen branches. Ash wood and branches become brittle when they die and soon break, unlike dead oak branches which can hang on for years. The main symptoms on bigger trees are dying back of the crown, for example lots of dead twigs and new shoots further inside the tree crown. On smaller trees the twigs and leaves change from a healthy greenish to brown/grey and start wilting.

The ash around Petworth and Northchapel and indeed the wider area, have been declining for the last 3 years and are becoming a major concern for owners of these trees, especially where they are adjoining a road or property, where public safety and inconvenience are likely to become a major issue.

Leconfield estate, other local landowners and County Councils are therefore taking a proactive approach and felling most roadside ash trees, so that local people should still be able to travel safely on the roads. This may have some visual impact but it will soon settle down and vegetation and flowers will grow back. Trees are inspected and marked and checks are made for bird, bat roosts and other protected species and information is passed to workers prior to felling.

All the timber will be removed and sold for milling timber and cordwood (firewood) and lop and top will mainly be chipped and sold as biomass for heating business centres and hospitals. This may not all be removed instantly but will be removed as soon as possible.

This disease and many others afflicting trees at present are very regrettable. The best thing we can do is to continue to actively manage our trees and woodlands, so they are as vigorous and healthy as possible and better able to withstand attacks. The main way we do this is to thin woodland as it becomes too dense – so we sacrifice the weaker trees to allow the rest to thrive.

Town Councillor braves the shave!

Harsha Desai, Petworth Town Councillor, has been a long-time supporter of Friends of Chichester Hospitals and decided that the current Covid-19 situation called for something memorable to mark the current time whilst raising some much needed funds.

Hasha explains how the charity shave came about: “On Saturday 18th April, my family had planned a curry supper evening to help raise funds for Friends of Chichester Hospitals, which was cancelled due to Covid-19, so I still wanted to find an alternative way to raise some much needed money for this charity.

I decided I would shave my hair off with the help of my husband and daughter!”

Harsha went on to explain that the hospital is very dear to her and originally set a target of £200 which would have been used for additional help for the doctors and nursing staff at the hospital. That initial figure had disappeared in the first hour and by the end of the first day the total was sitting at £1500. By the time the big day arrived the total had hit just

over £3000! At the time of going to press the money raised so far is just under £4015 and with the addition of gift aid sits at a total of £4877.50.

Harsha would like to thank her husband Alex and daughter Sasha for their support with this challenge (and a bit of revenge!) as well as all her family and friends for their amazing kind donations.

The Petworth Park Antiques & Fine Art Fair

11-13 September 2020 Due to the Covid-19 situation and in line with government advice, the fair has been postponed to Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September 2020.

With the current crisis, a whole summer of events have had to be cancelled or postponed – from school fetes to large scale music festivals.

Three key Petworth events are hoping to reschedule their events for later in the year and will regularly monitor the government advice and keep you updated accordingly. Please visit their websites and social media platforms for the latest information.

During May the fair went online with a virtual fair allowing international collectors, designers and interested members of the public to sit in their ‘lockdown’ homes and enjoy all that is on offer. The organisers are still hoping that The Petworth Park Antiques & Fine Art Fair can open to the public in the grounds of Petworth House in Petworth, West Sussex with the revised date of Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September 2020, when everyone can also visit the National Trust property. www.petworthparkfair.com

Petfringe Organisers of the 2020 PetFringe have announced that it will come as no surprise that they have decided not to run the Petfringe festival in June/July.

SPOTLIGHT EVENTS 2020 Petworth Festival News Petworth Festival organisers have issued the following message in light of the current situation: “As many of our friends and supporters will have heard, Petworth Festival has had to announce significant changes to its plans as a result of the current health crisis. All events in July have been either postponed or cancelled, but, in what we hope will look like a shaft of sunlight in the otherwise grey skies, we will be

presenting a sequence of the absolute highlights of this planned Summer Festival in a special week of events that will precede the 2020 Literary Week. The precise format of the new PETWORTH FESTIVAL EXTRA will be finalised as soon as we know what can and can’t be done in the current climate, but what we can say is that events will run between Friday 16 October-Sunday 1 November with a week of music and performance followed by the 10th Anniversary Literary Week.

We have already been overwhelmed by the support we have received from many of our Friends and Supporters, but the Festival will still need all the help

we can get to enable us to overcome the many challenges the Covid-19 crisis has forced on us.

As such we appeal to everyone who loves the Petworth Festival to help us survive into 2021 and beyond by making a donation, however small. This can be done on-line at www.petworthfestival.org.uk In the meantime, our overriding concerns remain for the wellbeing of our audiences, our supporters and our Festival team, many of whom are volunteers, not to mention the musicians and performers who bring so much to our lives.

Lots to do online!

The libraries are currently closed but West Sussex Libraries has a whole host of activities and resources for all ages to enjoy from the comfort of your own home.

If you'd like to use the eLibrary but don't know where to begin, or if you've been having problems with downloading or with your smartphone or tablet, the library are there to help.

Just send an email to library.digital@westsussex.gov.uk with your name, telephone number and a brief description of the help you need. They will then get in touch as soon as they can. It may not be possible to answer everything, but they will certainly try!

Research local and family history

Whilst libraries are shut and if you’re isolating at home at the moment, why not make the most of the time to start to trace your family history or investigate the history of where you live?

With library buildings closed, lots of people are turning to the eLibrary for eInformation, eBooks, eMagazines, eComics, eNewspapers and eAudiobooks.

Melody for the Mind are informal, relaxed, dementiafriendly singing groups which take place in four of the area’s libraries when the buildings are open. While library buildings are temporarily closed they thought they would bring some songs to you at home so that everyone can join in! COMMUNITY In the current climate many of us are using our daily exercise to get a bit fitter.

If you’ve always wanted to start running then now may a great opportunity to make a steady start.

The NHS Couch to 5K will help you gradually work up towards running 5K in just 9 weeks.

What is Couch to 5K? Couch to 5K starts with a mix of running and walking to gradually build up your fitness and stamina.

The plan involves 3 runs a week, with a day of rest in between, and a different schedule for each of the 9 weeks.

Northchapel lockdown 5k Every year for the last few years, Northchapel Primary School PTA, have organised a 5k run around Northchapel.

It gets kids and grown ups out in the countryside, and raises much needed funds for our village school. It's become a very popular local event but with the lockdown in place, they didn’t want to cancel it completely and and have had to

do things differently, so this year they’ve organised the Northchapel lockdown 5k.

Anyone and everyone can enter online. Visit www.eventbrite. com/e/northchapel-lockdown-5ktickets-102551895480 and then once entered, run or walk 5k. Stick to the current guidelines – stay safe, and only go out close to home once a day. You can run or walk your 5k anywhere safe – if you live in Northchapel you could run

the 5k route on your own, or you could run laps around your garden or even your front room! You don’t need to complete the 5k in one go, but you can keep track of how far you go every day and build it up.

The original event was due to take place on June 20th, so you need to have completed your 5k by June 21st.

Once you've completed the 5k, make sure you take an awesome finishing line photo – be creative - and post it on our Northchapel 5k facebook page, and they will post you out a medal. Please use the hashtag: #northchapellockdown5k in any social media posts too.

Young people and Covid-19

SCHOOL COMMUNITY NEWS At time of press, the Government has asked parents to keep their children at home until further notice. Schools will remain open only for those children whose parent(s) are classed as key workers, or children who are vulnerable.

At the time of writing we are still not sure when schools will go back and in what format they will return. So how do we all stay sane in the uncertain world we find ourselves in?

Stay in touch

Make sure that you stay in touch with your child/children’s school and community. The full list of schools in the Petworth Pages readership is overleaf and they will be the best source of information for day-to-day help for your child’s home learning and support.

Everyone learns in different ways and as parents we are often not equipped to set up a learning environment at home on a long-term basis.

Don’t be hard on yourself if things go wrong. The way children learn may now be different to when you were at school so seek out the advice from your children's school and the activities posted there and ask for help if you need it.

Sometimes our busy lives mean that when children are trying to show us something or tell us about the amazing thing they have just discovered we are checking our phones for email or social media.

Maybe make a point of the day where no-one can access their electronic devices – put them in a cupboard on silent if you can't resist a Whatsapp ping!

Create a balance in the day

Make it fun. Combine baking with maths, art with algebra – whatever it takes to feel like some learning has taken place that day. Maybe decide that this unusual break is the time for everyone in the family to learn a new skill? Learn to juggle, play the ukulele – whatever you decide! When you’ve mastered this new skill you won't forget when you learnt to do it.

Live for the day, reflect on the day

Make the most of the whole day and if things don't go according to plan then accept it and move on – try not to dwell on the negative but take the positive points away with you. Maybe encourage your child/children to keep a journal to reflect back on their achievements and make this unique time something to look back on.

Maybe plan out how the day is going to pan out the night before or in the morning? Maybe start the
