Editor’s welcome The next phase of lockdown will hopefully have started by the time this issue drops through your door, with the final phase scheduled for June. With these changes, meeting friends and family becomes easier and other businesses who have had to remain closed can once again open their doors. We've been here before though so understandably there is a tone of cautious optimism. However with the continued rollout of the vaccine to younger age groups and second jabs well under way we can hopefully get out and enjoy all that summer has to offer. As always, local businesses and venues need your support – shops, cafés, pubs, restaurants are all working extremely hard to make your visit as safe and enjoyable as possible – we've also given you some ways to enjoy your local area in this issue and ideas for events to visit later in the year. The Petworth Pages team wish you a great summer.

PETWORTH TOWN COUNCIL COMMUNITY HUB AND OFFICES UPDATE Petworth Town Council (PTC) has been looking for new premises for the last 24 months with the aspiration to provide accessible offices and a flexible community hub. This hub could include a tourist office, family services, pop up museum, health and wellbeing services, and with the potential to develop new services in response to changing community needs. During 2019 & 2020 the Town Council provided additional community services from the existing offices as well as maintaining the office as a base for councillors to facilitate these services. Ideally the new premises would be able to accommodate further services that may be required by the community, such as a library, should the existing service close. The current Town Council office in the Old Bakery is rented from Chichester District Council and the lease is due for renewal although this has been extended on a temporary basis. The existing office provides a small meeting space on the first floor, along with a small WC. A working group was established in 2019 to investigate new premises in the town centre, which should be accessible to all of the community and councillors

PETWORTH INFRASTRUCTURE BUSINESS PLAN UPDATE Petworth Town Council (PTC) published the first issue of the Petworth Infrastructure Business Plan (PIBP) in January 2021. The purpose of the PIBP is to identify, document and prioritise projects in the community; to enable a clear programme & structure for delivery of those projects & to bring together and utilise the resources available to us in the community. The PIBP has been made available for, and will reflect, public comment as received so please make the Town Council aware of any projects that you or your organisation wish to consider, support or initiate. The plan is available from PTC’s website under the community section. PTC and the Working Group will look

to update the plan in June / July 2021 and again in November / December 2021, in readiness for submission to the South Downs National Park before January 2022. START EXPLORING! We are fortunate to live in an area rich in places to visit and explore. During the first lockdown last year, many people started walking and finding places they never knew existed on their own doorstep. We all know the health benefits of walking including burning excess calories and building stamina, but best of all it’s free! Whether you are working at home, back to the office or looking to catch up with friends, just a 30 minute walk three times a week can provide enormous health benefits for the long-term. If 30 minutes feels like too much – then 10 minutes every day is a good compromise. If cycling or horse riding is your chosen form of exercise then there is a great network of bridleways and public byways to explore and we are fortunate to have the South Downs so close by. There are some great online resources available for places to visit and park if you are heading further afield. • www.southdowns.gov.uk • www.experiencewestsussex.com • www.westsussex.gov.uk/leisure-recreationand-community/places-to-visit-and-explore/

Some fun ways to decide where to visit: • Let a different member of the family choose where to go each week, even if it’s their favourite place and not yours, and you’ve been there a hundred times before! Everyone gets their turn! • Get out a local map and stick a pin in to find a new place. • Choose a cafe or pub and then centre your walk/run/cycle around that venue. • Create a 'treasure hunt' of things that you hope to see and do on your walk

PETWORTH TOWN COUNCIL PETWORTH FARMERS’ MARKET Hayley Marriott is Petworth Farmers’ Market manager and tells us why you should pop the monthly market on your calendar. “I couldn’t think of a better time to shop local and support independent business and it seems you all agree! Our markets have been thriving over these past couple of months and we cannot thank you enough for the continued support. We have recently been joined by the wonderful team from the Badgers who are offering a delicious hot breakfast roll. The Gay Farmer joins us with their organic extra virgin olive oil and without a doubt the best pesto I’ve come across, a must try. Each month Butlers Country Estates have been selling out of their famous smoked trout pate, another fantastic addition to the market. I’ve heard the coffee from Date Coffee is a must try & definitely one to watch.” Other regular stalls include: SØDT – The Hygge Bakery, LDR Marmalade, Petworth Community Garden, Selsey Willows Seafood, Chanctonbury Game, Pure Delights, Noble & Stace, Blackdog Veg, Olive + Things, Ken’s Eggs, Lodgehill Plants, Leesa Not Just Alpines, Mill Farm Organics, Simon’s Pies, Roni B’s Kitchen, Jake’s Artisan Foods, Nut Knowle Farm, Picnic & Hamper & Bookhams. The market is currently taking place every 4th Saturday of the month, in the main Petworth Car park 9am until 1pm.

Meet the Councillors

In this issue of Petworth Pages we meet two Councillors who have only recently joined the Town Council.

James Law has lived in Petworth for the last seven years and was elected onto the Town Council in February. He is involved with the finance and general purpose and highways, traffic and planning committees. We asked James what inspired him to join the Council? “I felt it was a great way to be able to contribute and give something back to the town that myself and my family live in.” What main changes have you seen in the town since joining the Town Council? “Well, I suppose the hot topic since joining has been the potential purchase of the old bank for the town’s new community hub space which, if it were to go ahead, I think would be a great addition to the town and community.” What are your hopes for the town in the years to come? “That Petworth continues to thrive as a community and place to live as well as continuing to be a destination of choice for outside visitors.”

Sue Frossard made Petworth her home 11 years ago moving from Chiddingfold. She also joined the Council in 2021 and sits on the Highways, Traffic and Planning and the Finance and General Purposes Committees and the Community Hub Working Group. She worked for 13 years as Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer for Chiddingfold Parish Council and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the community. She commented that Covid-19 and lockdown had somewhat curbed the normal work of the council with focus shifting to providing a Helpdesk and medicine delivery service to support residents who were shielding or self-isolating. “What I have seen over the years I've lived in the town is a dynamic and hard-working team striving to provide the very best environment for residents.” She hopes that in the future, plans will be made to provide sufficient housing to meet Governmentset targets, ensuring the mix of dwelling types is relevant to the local community and is sympathetic to the unique heritage. “While central Government often neglects small towns and cuts back on services, I believe that the present council, in line with the Town's Neighbourhood Plan, has the energy and vision to ensure retention of businesses, leisure and services.”

PETWORTH FESTIVAL At the time of writing, the Petworth Festival team can still be seen biting their nails as they monitor the progress of the Government’s covid roadmap, but as readers will be aware, an initial set of headline names for the 2021 festival was released some weeks ago, with tickets having now gone on sale to the Festival’s Sponsors and Patrons. Referring to a

full roster of events that is programmed to kick off on Wednesday 14 July, the Festival’s Artistic Director Stewart Collins affirms that there is a huge amount to look forward to over the 17 days that follow: “there was a clear sense of excitement when we announced to our supporters that comedian and author Adam Kay, The Blues Band, pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason and the exciting young talent that is the chart topping classical saxophonist Jess Gillam would be joining us come July, but the whole programme is now released and the momentum should only build from here on in.” Included in this year’s programme is an entire weekend of free activities for the family which we will be staged in the Pleasure Ground of Petworth House in collaboration the National Trust. COMMUNITY Plumpton Plain and replacing trees FRIENDS OF THE ataffected by ash dieback. SOUTH DOWNS Walks and Strolls programme Visit friendsofthesouthdowns.org. uk/public-walks for full details of the society’s organised walks.

The Friends was founded in 1923 as the Society of Sussex Downsmen to counter the threat of widespread development on the most beautiful parts of the Downs.

Friends of the South Downs Photography Competition One of their core aims is to encourage people to get out into the South Downs National Park and enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of its many varied landscapes. The 2019/20 photography competition did just that and generated over 120 entries within two categories. The brief was to celebrate the beauty of the SDNP – its landscape, wildlife, buildings and other man-made structures contributing to the cultural heritage of the area. Images had to be taken within the Park or as a view from outside the boundaries. The competition was open to both members and the public with the proviso that they were non-professionals. Visit friendsofthesouthdowns.org.uk/ photo-competition

They now focus on conservation, campaigning and guided walks. Volunteers and members support projects to help improve access and enjoyment of the landscape and to preserve the South Downs for future generations. Now more than ever, we know that a connection with nature and the landscape around us can nurture and nourish our physical health and our mental wellbeing. Making a difference on the Downs Current projects have included financing the replacement of over 50 stiles on certain paths within the Park, repairing a 1km stretch of the South Downs Way

COMMUNITY RETHINK FOOD WASTE www.lovefoodhatewaste.com is an initiative from Waste and Resources Action Programme (which operates as WRAP).

PETWORTH IN BLOOM Petworth is blooming! The troughs throughout the town, vibrant with Spring plants and bulbs, together with the glorious weather we had in April, has Petworth sparkling with colour. The far end of Rosemary Gardens has long been scheduled for a major facelift, delayed twice by Covid. Now work has begun to remove elderly and diseased shrubs and replant with donated perennials, roses and flowering shrubs, to bring light and colour to this area. It will be under planted in the autumn with bulbs. The centre of town will soon be awash with colour, with summer planting and hanging baskets as the ‘In Bloom ‘ team prepare for a visit from the RHS judges, they are hoping to achieve gold again this year. For more information about getting involved please contact petworthinbloom@gmail.com

The website contains some really useful resources to help reduce food waste and save you money, including 5 ways to use up leftover bread, what store cupboard essentials every household should have, how to meal plan, writing an essential shopping list and lots more. Chichester District Council has recently approved the trial of 15 HOTBINs to be distributed to volunteer residents in the district, with the aim of reducing food waste entering general waste. A HOTBIN is a new product that offers a quicker alternative to the already effective traditional composting bins. HOTBINs compost at high temperatures and provide results in up to 90 days, 32 times faster than traditional compost bins. Those interested in finding out more about the trial should follow Chichester District Council’s social media channels: Facebook: www.facebook.com/ ChichesterDistrictCouncil Twitter: www.twitter.com/ ChichesterDC Instagram: www.instagram. com/ChichesterDC

View from the Chair

The last time I wrote this column, non-essential retail had just gone back into lockdown. This time we have just come out the other side, ready to embrace what we are all hoping will be a wonderfully busy Summer for the town.

we have in town. We have some really beautiful places full of art including Kevis House Gallery, Forrest Gallery, Rountree Tryon Gallery, Dragon Gallery, Moncrieff-Bray on the outskirts of town, and the new Jean Miro exhibition at Newlands Gallery. Take the time to visit these places – you will be rewarded! I must mention the essential services and tradespeople who have kept the town running during lockdown – Austen’s, Lloyds Chemist and the newly renovated Co-op have been open throughout, and we have so many terrific local businesses who don’t have shopfronts but who have carried on during these last months supplying services that we can’t do without. Visit www.discoverpetworth for an up to date listing of all our trades and services members as well as viewing the back pages of this issue of Petworth Pages. I know what I have written sounds like an advertisement for Petworth – it is! Petworth is a fabulous and unique town, and with the challenges facing the traditional high streets, what we have here becomes more and more valuable. As the town reopens, we can’t wait to welcome you.

The businesses have been hard at work again throughout the latest closure, many with an online offering and click & collect, whilst others have refurbished, relocated and even renamed. Allans Menswear has had a full makeover, Red Card has moved to The Old Bakery, and Dales Country Interiors is now Maggie & Belle. In the centre of town, Cherry’s Deli & Bakery, The Star and Coco Café now have their tables out in the sunshine, while the rear garden at The Angel is open for drinkers and diners. As I #shoplocal write this, hospitality venues are due to reopen for inside dining on 17th May – please give all pubs, cafés and restaurants your #eatlocal #support local support when they do fully reopen – it’s been a long and very hard road for them in particular. As locals, I think we sometimes pass by the fantastic array Sally Matson of antique shops, interiors shops, boutiques and galleries Sally Matson, Chair of Petworth Business Association

COMMUNITY COMMUNITY SHOP CELEBRATES ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR!

PROPOSED CAFE EXTENSION PROJECT Fittleworth Stores has been granted planning permission to extend the café and kitchen.

Lurgashall Village Shop has recently passed a major milestone celebrating its third birthday since launching in Spring 2018. The shop and Post Office has proved to be a winning success for both local residents and also the numerous visitors to the village. As well as employing three staff including a full time manager and post-mistress the shop is supported by over 25 volunteers who work regular shifts. At the outset, the aims for the shop are to serve local residents and surrounding villages but also to support local suppliers and businesses offering fresh produce and artisan food. www.lurgashallvillageshop.uk

Alison Welterveden, co-manager at the stores explained how much of a benefit the extension will be. “Before lockdown the café played such an important role in creating the community hub that was at the heart of our original vision for the Stores. It has been so satisfying seeing so many socialising with neighbours and friends and bringing the village community to life. It has been very frustrating that we were only able to provide a fair weather facility, but this extension changes everything. We are planning to have about 12 tables plus a ‘dining’ table for 8 people. This will double our internal capacity. The kitchen will also be extended to support the new larger café.” Construction is hoped to start on 1st September and the new, larger cafe to launch on 1st November. The schedule of work has been planned to minimise disruption with the shop able to remain open throughout the build and any closure of the café will be very limited. “We are very excited about seeing our new extended café taking shape” Alison went on to say ”but before that we have a lot of fundraising to do. We will need to raise about £90,000.” At time of going to press funds raised had topped £60,000. If you would like to help this project then purchasing a share is the easiest way. Visit www.fittleworthstores.com for details.

COMMUNITY THE SYLVIA BEAUFOY CENTRE The Sylvia Beaufoy Centre reopened their doors on 19th April to re-commence face-to-face activities and take one more step towards 'normal' clubs again! The Duke of Edinburgh programme is going well with 10 young people working towards their Bronze Award. They completed their first hike of 10 miles in April and are now preparing for an overnight expedition in June. Each team member is developing skills in differing areas, such as learning to cook and learning new languages! The Greenpower team is now fully booked and they are set to face a busy season with 4 race days lined up at Goodwood, Cornwall, Castle Combe and Dunsfold, ahead of the final in October. During their Wednesday night sessions they are busy preparing and trying to seek sponsorship for the team for this season and also the 2022 season. They would be hugely appreciative of

any donations to support the project which develops some great life skills for our young people such as teamworking, communication, leadership and self-confidence, as well as having the challenge of racing itself. If you would be interested in becoming a sponsor or wish to donate, then please do contact Dan or Karen at the Centre via dan@sylviabeaufoy.org or karen@ sylviabeaufoy.org. Alternatively you can donate via: localgiving.org/charity/ petworthyouth sylviabeaufoy.org

LOCAL SCHOOLS LOCAL SCHOOLS NEED YOUR HELP

SWIMMING IS BACK ON THE CURRICULUM!

The past year has been difficult for local schools to maintain their fundraising activities.

Northchapel Primary School is one of the few schools in the area to still have its own swimming pool with staff & pupils very much looking forward to getting back to swimming for the summer term after Covid put paid to any swimming in 2020.

Christmas fairs, school fetes and other key fundraising activities have not taken place during the past year due to COVID-19. As a result funds that are usually raised throughout the year to help with additional resources have not been available. These additions could be to fund school trips, keep swimming pools open, fund much needed IT equipment and much more. If you would like to help your local school raise much needed funds then visit their website (list shown on the following page) where you will find their PTA or Friends details and how to donate.

Parents & staff have spent a couple of Saturdays doing some much-needed maintenance work to the pool enclosure area, inside & out. The pool has been at the school for 56 years, originally being built above ground in 1965. Many local people at the time were involved in the build & still have families connected with the school & village today. In 2011 the enclosure was completed following a significant amount of money being raised which has lengthened the life of the pool considerably & made swimming a more pleasant experience. All schools must provide swimming lessons in Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2 and at Northchapel children are fortunate enough to swim every school year of their Northchapel journey. As well as there being the option for an after-school swimming club to further extend the swimming opportunities, for many years the pool has opened its doors for summer holiday swimming sessions as well. During these holidays the pool is opened back up to the community who put so much work in to keeping the pool going to enable anyone with children

under 12 the opportunity to use the pool for a small cost. With the required volunteers in place & with the roadmap for covid restrictions being lifted in the way it is hoped, the intention is for summer holiday swimming to once again be on offer. This allows the pool to recoup some of the high cost of running it. The school have also been able to raise large sums of money towards its upkeep from the always popular sponsored swim events where children challenge themselves to swim as many lengths as they can. It's always at these events that it becomes clear how beneficial it is having a pool on site – children's confidence grows to enable them to challenge themselves to swim further than they have ever done before.
