Editor’s welcome Over the past year we have started each publication with renewed hope, that by the time the next edition drops, the general situation will be more positive. There is indeed lots to be hopeful about with the new vaccine in operation, but uncertainty remains around when lots of businesses will be able to reopen around the country, when schools will return once again and if in fact summer events will be able to take place this year.

Despite the restrictions that we currently face, each issue of Petworth Pages has shown how businesses and local organisations are extremely resilient in lots of different ways, despite all that is placed in their path. Developing new, innovative ways to keep in touch with customers and group members, planning and preparation for when restrictions are lifting.

Spring is the season of new beginnings and when the next issue drops at the end of May we look forward with optimism to what the summer may bring.

In praise of the independent business With the new lockdown starting in 2021, non-essential businesses across the Petworth Pages readership shut their doors once again. Those who had to shut to the public had to resort to once again operating on-line or on a click and collect/delivery basis.

Petworth Pages caught up with Steve Howe from Petworth Bookshop and Jules Arlette from The Badgers just outside of Petworth to see how they have navigated through the changes that the current pandemic has bought.

Petworth Bookshop is run by Steve “…as a town we are very fortunate Howe and has recently moved into new to have a responsive Business premises within Petworth. We asked Steve how the shop had coped over the Association who helped with PPE last year, what the business support amongst many other things”. has been for businesses such as his Steve Howe, Petworth Bookshop and what the long term outlook was for independent bookshops.

“It has been a challenging 12 months for us all but when we saw the opportunity to move to bigger premises during the first lockdown last year we knew, despite all the uncertainty, that we had to take a chance. The size and shape of the new shop lends itself so well to our endeavour and after 18 years in the first premises we had outgrown them somewhat. Six months later, following a total refurbishment, new bookshop build and double page spread in The Times we were ready to open. Just in time for lockdown 2! The shop did eventually launch on the 2nd December, closing as did all non essential retail on the 24th of the same month. The first three weeks of socially distancing trading were pretty epic so we are hopeful for the year ahead.

I think Government help for our sector has been very fair. Many countries have not had this level of support and though frustrating, we are raring to go once the infection rate drops sufficiently to allow the lifting of restrictions. It is also very important to recognise the support we have had from Chichester District Council who have been diligent and active in ensuring the information and advice we need is always available. Plus as a town we are very fortunate to have a responsive Business Association who helped with PPE amongst many other things.

As for independent bookshops, we have seen a decade of growth. My last year was my busiest yet. It is though fair to say that as we have refocussed our lives and perhaps engaged more closely with what is of enduring value and importance that there has been a renewed appreciation of books and reading and better still a reappraisal of the value of local and the strength of community if we are all prepared to invest in it.”

The Badgers is a privately owned freehouse nestled in the heart of the South Downs and has been run for the past 30 years by Jules Arlette, the proprietor, and her friendly team.

A venue steeped in history, it was previously known as The Railway Inn in the late 1800’s and was the old charabanc stop on the way to Goodwood racecourse. It also served Petworth Railway Station which closed down in the 1960’s.

When we spoke to Jules regarding how the last year had affected her business she was incredibly upbeat and positive.

They decide to remain open for takeaway and provide a much needed delivery service to vulnerable members of the community. Jules is keen to support the local community after all the support they have shown her over the years. She felt a need to make a much needed effort to keep going and this is much appreciated by those that collect a weekly selection of delights including Fish Friday and the ever popular Sunday lunch. As I write this update from Petworth Town Council, the roll out of the Covid-19 vaccine is underway with those in the most vulnerable groups currently being vaccinated. Thanks to the determination of our colleagues at Petworth Surgery, we are delighted to hear that they have secured agreements to offer the Covid-19 vaccine locally, at Petworth Surgery. Our continued appreciation goes to Hafiza and the team at the Surgery for their ongoing care for residents after what has been a hugely challenging year for all the staff.

I would also like to make readers aware that we have been supported by some wonderful volunteers who continue to ensure those who are shielding or isolating are able to access their prescriptions through the collection and delivery service provided by our Helpdesk team. Particular thanks go to our Helpdesk co-ordinators Sue Frossard, Tim Sharp, Lipika Mandal and Jo Truscott and to the many volunteers who have given their time to support others across the community during these difficult times.

During 2020, the Town Council coordinated the development and production of an Infrastructure Business Plan (IBP) on behalf of the town. It is anticipated that in the next 5+ years there could be an additional 150 new dwellings in and around the town which will put significant pressure on the town’s existing infrastructure which is already inadequate in certain respects.

It is vital that the provision of infrastructure does keep pace with the growing needs of the town and in particular the new housing in the Plan Area.

The IBP sets out the current understanding of infrastructure projects required by Petworth to support both the existing community and the anticipated growth consequent upon new development in the Plan Area.

Please do visit our website to read the full copy of the IBP and contact us should you have any feedback or questions. The plan is a live document which will be kept under review so the views of residents are always welcome.

Many individuals representing numerous organisations from across the Town were involved in the development of the IBP hence the Town Council is confident the priorities reflect the needs of the whole community. Thanks to all those who contributed to the project.

In recent months the Town Council has been co-ordinating numerous other projects to benefit our community.

Although the Christmas Event itself was cancelled, we lit up the town over the Christmas period which brought some much-needed festive joy to all.

We remain in negotiation with the National Trust regarding the lease of Petworth Park Sports Ground; it is vital for the development of the ground that we secure a long-term lease of the site and we are hopeful colleagues at the National Trust support us with this endeavour to benefit current and future users of the facilities.

We have installed a gate and some concrete steps at Station Road allotments making it easier for users to access the site.

We have mole drained Hampers Common in the hope that this improves the drainage of the site making it a more enjoyable area for users, all year round.

We are installing a wall mounted touch screen display in the red phone box sited by the pedestrian entrance to the Old Bakery, in the Town Centre. This will be a great way of updating our residents and visitors to the Town on the events, opportunities, activities, and initiatives they can enjoy throughout the year. We are also exploring the feasibility of installing a water supply and possibly a water fountain in Rosemary Gardens.

Our Farmers Market continues to take place in a section of Pound Street car park, on the 4th Saturday of every month. The Market is being organised in line with Government guidelines and we have recently recruited Hayley Marriott as our new Farmers Market Manager; Hayley will co-ordinate and manage the monthly market and will also work towards ensuring a wider variety of produce is available for customers to enjoy.

The Town Council is delighted to report that following a very successful public

consultation, the construction of a new pedestrian crossing on the A272 Midhurst Road near Downview Road will begin on Tuesday 23rd March.

The request for a crossing at this busy section of road was put forward by the Town Council for Community Infrastructure Levy funding a few years ago and we are delighted to have gained the support of the principle authorities and the local community.

The works are likely to take around four weeks and our thanks go to West Sussex County Council for co-ordinating this project and helping to keep residents and visitors safe whilst in Petworth.

The Town Council is currently advertising 2 vacancies as well as seeking volunteers to support the efforts of the Council and to help us deliver the many projects, activities and events we organise for the town’s residents. PETWORTH TOWN COUNCIL

Meet the Councillor

Alan Copus has lived in Petworth for 9 years, having previously resided in Plaistow for 37 years. He is currently Vice Chair of the Town Council as well on sitting on several committees within the Council.

Alan explains what drew him to became a Town Councillor for Petworth Town Council some 7 years ago. “I wanted to put something back into the community and was encouraged to join by a neighbour who happened to be a Councillor at that time. Being a qualified accountant with a commercial business background it was fairly natural for me to sit on the Council’s Finance & General Purposes Committee which

I have chaired for 5 years or so.

I am also an active member of our Open Spaces committee which has oversight of the two playparks in the town, the sports ground, allotments and planting around the town. During my time I think the town (pre-Covid) has become more welcoming, tidier, prettier and with gradually improving facilities although there is always more that could be done. I am particularly pleased that we now have a thriving Farmers’ Market each month, have improved signage to reduce HGV lorries coming through the town and installed some grit bins.

The lead up to Christmas is always a busy time for the team of volunteers and hopefully this year Covid will not prevent us from putting on the full Christmas event which has become extremely popular and which would be

a very welcome return to some form of normality in 2021.

Going forward it would be great to be able to hold council meetings face to face again rather than by video. We have all had to learn to use the technology, which does have its limitations and frustrations, and this is the best we can do in the circumstances – but it is not a patch on discussing things around a table.

There is a lot of work currently going on to try to improve/expand the leisure and sporting facilities in the town and to make sure that we are well placed to obtain any infrastructure funding which becomes available. It would be good to see some tangible results from this.

We are quite an active Town Council and I hope to be part of it for a few more years to come.”

RSPCA Mount Noddy centre seeking to build new animal shelter The RSPCA Sussex, Chichester and District Branch based at Mount Noddy is launching an ambitious plan to rebuild its animal centre to create more and better facilities for the neglected, abused and unwanted dogs and cats it cares for.

The year-long £3.4 million project will enable Mount Noddy to help hundreds more animals each year. A large legacy left to the branch has paid for more than half the cost but it still needs to raise more than £1.5 million to complete the build.

Bestselling author and vet Bruce Fogle (father of Ben and pictured right), Branch president said: “Knowledge of

what helps animals recover when they come into shelters has come on in leaps and bounds over the years and with this legacy and the support of local businesses and the community, we have an exciting opportunity to create the best possible environment to help them.”

The branch, which is responsible for its own fundraising to run the centre, is selling the chance to name a kennel or cat pen at the centre in Eartham for £500 each. It is the perfect way to remember a loved one, either human or furry, mark an occasion like a wedding or anniversary or for businesses to show support for the centre. Lockdown activity Researching your family tree

Households across the Petworth Pages readership will soon be asked to take part in Census 2021.

The census is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives us the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It has been carried out every decade since 1801, with the exception of 1941.

It will be the first run predominantly online, with households receiving a letter with a unique access code, allowing them to complete the questionnaire on their computers, phones or tablets.

“A successful census will ensure everyone from local government to charities can put services and funding in the places where they are most needed,” Iain Bell, deputy national statistician at the Office for National Statistics, said.

“This could mean things like doctors’ surgeries, schools and new transport routes. That’s why it is so important everyone takes part and we have made it easier for people to do so online on any device with additional help and paper questionnaires for those who need them.”

John Heaton, the Census Engagement Manager for the South and West of West Sussex, who lives down on the coast, added: “All these services, and other aspects of life in a town like Petworth, are really important now and going forward and it is vital that we get an accurate picture of all of the residents in your community so that the right resources can be put in place to meet their very diverse needs.”

First results will be available within 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations.

Census day is not far away now, on March 21, but households across the country will receive letters with online codes allowing them to take part from early March. John added: “Preparing this in January, in such uncertain times, we do not yet know exactly what support on the ground will look like but we are recruiting staff to help households who may need additional help, both in Petworth and remotely on the phone and on the website”.

1. Look at all possible variations spelling key surnames.

2. Talk to all your relatives and if possible ask to see certificates which serve as vital records for births, marriage and deaths.

View from the Chair

2020 was a hugely challenging year for all businesses and 2021 has started with all but essential retail in lockdown again. However, the Business Association has a new and enthusiastic committee in place, and we will continue to promote our members, working hard to keep the business community in Petworth positive and ready to fully open again.

The support we have had this year from our local customers has been fantastic, and has helped to brighten many a dark day.

We appreciate that the necessity of hand sanitising, wearing masks and having to queue can be frustrating, but we are all doing our best to keep our customers, our staff and ourselves safe and healthy – thank you for your understanding and adherence regarding these measures.

The PBA has focussed on developing strong working relationships with the Petworth Town Council, Chichester District Council and Petworth House over the last year, and we know this work will continue to be mutually beneficial. ENVIRONMENT The speed of traffic in Northchapel village has been a concern for many residents so at the end of 2020 they decided to work on an initiative that many other villages had put into place – by constructing scarecrows and displaying them on the side of key roads in an attempt to slow traffic down.

Petworth Community Craft Group fundraising The Petworth Community Craft Group have been as busy as ever despite the restrictions of the past year. Tricia Stephens from the group details the positive elements that have come out of the recent year as well as how the restrictions have affected fundraising efforts.

Despite challenging times with the pandemic stopping training and play, Petworth Football Club’s First Team remained unbeaten in their first four League fixtures of the 2020/21 season; The Reserves were improving with each game and were fourth in their League; and the youth teams were all running well with plenty of enthusiasm and some very promising young players. Petworth Park Cricket Club are seeking players to join the club for the 2021 season.

Junior cricket continues with programmes for U5-U11s, as well as fielding a junior hardball team for the first time since the club was reformed.

Women’s Softball Cricket will practice on a Wednesday, with a programme of friendly matches and competitive festivals throughout the summer.

For adult cricketers, PPCC will be playing their first season in the Sussex County League with fixtures on Saturday, while keeping a full programme of friendly Sunday XI fixtures and Thursday night T20s.

PPCC have also just placed the order for a 2 bay practice net facility which will be available to members to improve their skills!

Petworth Park Sports 100 Club

During the eight years it has been running the 100 Club has been a huge support for the sports ground raising just under £20k for PPS funds, and paying out over 12k in prizes.

“We’d like to thank every one of our 100 Club members for their monthly support. A good percentage of them have been with us since the beginning illustrating their commitment to wanting Stoolball a thriving sports facility in the Park.” says Petworth Park Sports are delighted to be Vincent Phillips, Petworth Park Sports welcoming Tillington & Petworth Stoolball 100 Club Secretary.

“There are currently 100 members which brings in £300 per month. This income has often bridged the gap in PPS’s day-to-day finances, but now we have reached a stage when we are able to add to our funds to put towards our exciting plans to bring our facilities in the pavilion, and the playing area, up to a standard to be proud of. In doing so we will be able to offer a wider range of facilities for all age groups. In these difficult times there is great importance attached to exercise and outdoor activities which in turn helps to bring the community together.”

Back to remote learning When the new lockdown came into place on 5 January schools shut, some having only been open for just one day. Once again children would have to be learning remotely.

Petworth Pages contacted headteachers at Northchapel and Petworth primary schools to see how the latest lockdown has affected them and the families they support. We asked them key questions about how prepared they felt for this lockdown and what key challenges there have been for the schools and families.

Q Did you feel more prepared for the current lockdown in terms of delivering homeschooling?

Deborah Coggin at Northchapel Primary: Yes, we had a good system in place last time round and we have only looked to enhance it. However, the timing together with being told we would stay open did not help us to switch immediately.

John Galvin at Petworth Primary: Yes, as we changed our computing curriculum during the autumn term, so the children from year two to year six were familiar with Office 365. We listened to parents comments from the first lockdown, so we wanted to ensure we had more face-toface communication with our children.

The teachers and teaching assistants have been incredible with the number of live sessions they deliver each week, which is approximately 37 sessions per week.

Q What ways do you communicate with parents to deliver homeschooling?

DC: We communicate through a digital platform called ClassDojo and Microsoft Teams.

JG: We use a variety of ways to communicate with our parents and carers, which includes; work set on class blog, live sessions, emails and phone calls. We have also delivered work weekly to our year one children.

Q What have been the biggest challenges to delivering materials to children at home?

DC: The variety of digital equipment families use means that documents respond differently depending on what the families are viewing it on.

JG: The biggest challenge is ensuring families can access the online materials. We have sent out 28 devices to our families, so anyone who asked for a device we were able to loan one. We have been incredibly lucky with donations of old laptops as well as a generous donation of two new laptops.

Q Has technology been a help or hindrance for homeschooling DC: It has helped to deliver specific teaching rather than leaving children to get on with learning activities.

JG: Technology has definitely helped homeschooling as you can direct children to work independently on certain education websites e.g.

Times Tables Rockstars, Prodigy, Spelling Shed. However, there is no replacement for face-to-face teaching by qualified teachers.

Then if the children are at primary school and secondary school, this makes life difficult as some secondary school children are on the computer all day.

Q What have parents found the biggest challenges to helping their children with homeschooling in terms of technology DC: Rural area internet speeds and either the lack of working equipment or often the laptop is for the parent's homeworking.

JG: I think it has been a surprise to some parents about what is in the curriculum and what is expected of the children. Families have found it difficult as some children do not see home as a ‘learning environment’, although they are learning at home all of the time. They do not see home as a place to learn English, maths, science etc. so this has probably led to some conflict as all parents want to do the

Q Are you aware of any organisations that can help with providing laptops etc to children who do not have them at home? Have they been in touch with you directly or have you had to search them out.

DC: Yes, we put out a plea using the Business2Schools appeal, although we didn’t receive an offer directly, a local hardship fund has purchased 10 new laptops for us to loan to our families.

JG: We were very quick to get our allocation of laptops (seven) from the DfE, which have been helpful and were loaned out in the first week. We have worked closely with Business2Schools for two years with furniture and they have been trying to encourage people across the country to donate old devices.
