“PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE” with LISA McCLENDON ESEM: “When was your purpose revealed or when did you have that moment of enlightenment?” Ms.Lisa: “My purpose is still being revealed!” (Lisa laughs). “I continue to learn new things about myself. I have always been a singer, but one day I became serious about doing it. It’s like a fish out of water – it wasn’t designed to survive without it. I didn’t feel truly comfortable until I was doing what I was purposed to do. Everything else left me feeling out of place. So no matter what I tried, I was always drawn back to music. It was at the age of 15 when I realized I was called to reach the world through music. It was later confirmed by God through an individual who spoke to me for nearly an hour about my purpose. Those words were written for me to rehearse, review and refer to; and it’s in a frame on my wall right now to remind me of my purpose.” ESEM: “What do you mean by your purpose is still being revealed?” Ms.Lisa: “I am learning everyday how to reach the world through my life. But just the other day I learned that while God may reveal different ideas or assignments in how to fulfill our purpose, they may need to be placed on the shelf until the right season.” ESEM: “I like how you explained about shelving ideas until the right season. What season are you in now?”

Ms. Lisa: “I am enjoying the season of reaching the world through music. However, God is slowly revolving me in to writing books and ministering with my husband.” ESEM: “Do you have any mentors in your life?” Ms.Lisa: “Yes, I do! I have mentors for different areas in my life because there are so many components to who we are. Every mentor that I have is a key element to my success in life.” ESEM: “What have your mentors spoken to you about that has impacted you the most?” Ms. Lisa: “My business mentor says, ‘Let me take this before Daddy and I will get back with you.’ “I am reminded that when you seek God’s direction first, it makes your journey easier. I also have a friend who encourages me to do devotionals. Her enjoyment is growing closer to the Lord and having an intimate relationship with Him. After all, what does success really mean without being plugged into your power source in life? Additionally, we have marriage mentors who help us to learn how to disagree in love. I look forward to doing many more projects with my husband including ministering in the area of marriage.

Alopecia from Hair Accessories by Dr. Linda Amerson September is Alopecia Awareness Month. Kayla Martell is the newly crowned Miss Delaware, and she suffers from an autoimmune disease called Alopecia Areata, a condition that causes a person’s hair to fall out and affects 10% of the U.S. population. Hair accessories are meant to enhance the hair as well as to conceal fine, limp, sparse, damaged or broken hair strands. It is literally a billion dollar industry. As such, both consumers and licensed professionals should be well acquainted with proper usage. The absence of that knowledge may impair your hair and contribute to Alopecia and Cicatricial Alopecia.

I want to educate you on commonly used hair accessories and their risk factors: Barrettes may require adjusting Banana Clips necessithe tension to ensure they are not tate caution. On the other hand, if this not your case and your hairpins have lost their protective coating, throw them away. Finally, check the closures to ensure the right amount of tension.

In conclusion, female consumers appreciate the variety of options available in hair accessories. And, they love to see little girls’ hair adorned with ribbons, elastic balls, jewels, headbands, flowers and bows. Nevertheless, there are inherent and inevitable dangers if hair accessories are used frequently and improperly. So adhere to label instructions and incorporate the above-listed guidelines for proper hair care and maintenance. “A WOMEN’S NATURAL BEAUTY” with LISA McCLENDON “As a woman, I see women as flowers that require specialized and attentive care. The very core or root of who we are has to be properly nurtured. If you ignore your spiritual and physical core, it will begin to rot. And, like a flower, will wither and die. It is only a matter of time before what is on the inside can no longer be concealed, and the true you will surface for the world to see. I have a garden that I absolutely love to take care of at home. When I go to the store to buy flowers, a determining factor is the level of care that is required. Once selected, I educate myself on the proper sunlight, water, fertilizer and soil that is needed. Similarly, women should ensure they are saturated with the proper amount of daily spiritual devotion, positive thinking, physical exercise and vitamins. We shouldn’t focus on outer beauty more than inner beauty; rather we should give diligence to our total beauty.”

Let’s Talk about Hair Natural hair Club Kiauntra Nicholas created a natural hair club out of the desire to know more about how to take care of her own natural hair. She began by attempting to locate a Stylist who specialized in the care and styling of natural hair. Her unsuccessful quest led to experimenting with various treatments on her own hair, which, by the way, was in transition and much to her surprise, began to thrive. Join the Club at Lets-Talk-About-Hair for more information contact Kiauntra at kiauntrad@yahoo.com (405)808-0850 Quite naturally, people started to ask for advice in improving their hair. And with that, the “Let’s Talk about Hair” Club was launched in April. The monthly meetings draw approximately 30-40 people who desire encouragement, inspiration and education about the proper management of natural hair. For more information or to attend a meeting in the Oklahoma City area.

“REALITY MUSIC” with LISA McCLENDON

V

ocalist and songwriter Lisa McClendon brings a mix of jazz, soul, funk and a certain urban neo-soul sensibility to her sound. She has drawn comparisons to artists like Norah Jones and Lauryn Hill. With three projects under her belt, Lisa McClendon’s name has become synonymous with soulful music and cutting edge, heart-penetrating lyrics. Now, this Stellar and Dove award nominee has returned with the fourth installation to her musical legacy, REALITY via BluSoul Entertainment. Reality is defined as the state of being true, which is exactly what Lisa depicts as the CD goes in and out of songs that accurately reflect the day-to-day lives of listeners. “There are a lot of things I have to own up to today because of decisions that I made yesterday,” McClendon states . “So, I really wanted to create an album that talks about things we deal with on a regular basis, and shine that flashlight called reality on it.” And that she did as songs touch on subjects ranging from the lessons learned from those decisions made to being overwhelmed by responsibilities of life.

Having written and co-produced the majority of the CD, REALITY captures the essence of who Lisa McClendon truly is personally and musically. “I have grown a lot…I have more experience with life. REALITY is me unfiltered. Anyone can buy this album and be connected…it leaves no one out. ESEM: Ms. Lisa, since the last interview, what has gone on with the release of your last album, REALITY? Ms.Lisa: “We are so excited about the re-release of the album on August 30, 2010 and getting the word out! We are promoting a new single titled, “Please Help Me Now.” I call it my OUT CRY song. While on tour, the cry of people everywhere is the same, ‘I can’t do this any more! Can you Please Help Me Now? I had faith and my house still went into foreclosure. I had faith to keep my job, but still lost it…’ That the reality of today. People are praying and asking God to PLEASE HELP ME NOW!” For more information on Lisa’s album, visit http://lisamcclendon.ning.com

Natural Hair Talk with Lisa McClendon “What are you afraid of?” is the question I pose to people who would like to wear their natural hair. My transition of becoming a natural hair sister was a spiritual journey for me. I am more excepting of who I am and who’s I am since I have become natural. This expedition will make you face yourself and examine a lot of the things you do in life. It may not be for everyone, but it was great for me to go from relaxed hair to natural hair. I met a lady the other day who said, “I feel free.” This is what going natural will make you feel – the freedom to be you. I don’t know who decided that it was not acceptable for women to wear the natural hair that God adorned them with. Should we just allow society to dictate how we wear our hair? No! Express yourself! Be free to be you! ESEM: “How long have you been wearing your hair natural and how was it a spir

itual journey for you?” Ms.Lisa: “I was natural in 1997 and went back in 2007. It was a spiritual because along with so many other people, I was comfortable in hiding behind my hair, clothes and whatever else I could hide behind. When I could no longer hide, I realized I was actually afraid to face myself. But the Lord was pulling on me and it started with my hair. Now I’m not telling anyone to cut their hair – that was for me. He taught me I was more than my hair. Now I know who I am and I embrace me.” ESEM: “What is the most challenging thing about taking care of natural hair?”

taking care of my hair because I hadn’t researched any of my options nor did I look into different products and styles. So, I encourage people to research before your transition. YouTube has natural hair tutorials that you can find great step-by-step styling tips and product recommendations. “HOPE HOP” with L.Boogie Born and raised in Muskogee, Oklahoma, Lonnie Baker, known as L. Boogie, now resides in Missouri. He was nationally recognized as a nominee in 2008 for the Best Hip Hop Gospel album for the song, “Naked and Not Ashamed.”

ESEM: “Tell us about where it all began?” L. Boogie: “I became a fan of Hip Hop music at a very young age. Frustrated by lyrics that degraded women and promoted negativity, I began to produce my own music when I was 19. I wanted to create music that was not only good to dance to, but that also had substance and a purposeful message.” ESEM: “What exactly is Hope Hop music?” L. Boogie: “It is music that gives hope to ordinary people. I listened to what young people, communities and neighborhood churches were saying. Once I discovered what they were hungry for, I decided to cater to their needs. Hope Hop music provides optimism in tough and troubled times.” ESEM: “I must ask…Who is your barber?” L. Boogie: “Mike Counsel, owner of Barber King in Tulsa, Oklahoma.” Be on the look out for L. Boogie’s new hot single, “Where They Do That At” in October 2010.
