Gloucester was founded in AD97 and some of its ancient Roman heritage can still be seen today. Since then it has grown into a bustling city with a rich historic past. The focal point of the city has to be the beautiful Cathedral, which is steeped in over a thousand years of history. Its ‘Great East Window’ is one of the finest examples of English medieval stained glass, while its ‘Cloisters’ have been famously featured in the Harry Potter films. The heart of the City is home to excellent shopping centres, restaurants and pubs and a short walk will take you to the famous Docks. The now renovated Victorian warehouses served what was once the most inland port in Britain.

The Gloucester Waterways Museum gives even more insight into the history of the Docks with interactive water exhibits, regular events and during the warmer months offer boat trips along the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. Other places of interest include the City Museum & Art Gallery and the Folk Museum, both offering a diverse range of displays and unique exhibitions throughout the year. Just outside Gloucester is Wallsworth Hall, home to Nature in Art - a museum and art gallery dedicated to art inspired by nature. If you like activities, then why not try karting at JDR Karting or zap your way around the colourful lasertag arena.

Fine cuisine, where East meets West Close to Gloucester’s famous Cross, you will find the Tiger’s Eye. The restaurant resides in the iconic 17th century Old Bell Inn above Costa Coffee and accessed through a door to the right of the café. The Old Bell is one of Gloucester’s best-loved bars and has become a Gloucester institution since it opened. There are bars on two floors, a lounge and The Tiger’s Eye Restaurant. The first floor bar offers an oak paneled room with a huge Jacobean fireplace that just oozes history. The restaurant, in contrast has a contemporary feel that suits its Pan Asian fusion cuisine. If there is a thirst to quench or hunger to sate, The Tiger’s Eye will satisfy every need

with an eclectic, mouthwatering array of dishes that include starters such as soft shell crabs, cola braised pork belly, sushi, dim sum and more. Main courses range from pan fired duck breast with wasabi mash and red onion jam to beef fillet medallions, slow cooked ox tongue, pak choi and garlic puree with vine tomato and spring onion potato cake.

If they don’t tickle your fancy then why not indulge in one of the many meals from the Black Rock Grill menu, all of which should intrigue even the most gastronomically sophisticated palate. A wide selection of meats is available to cook on your rock including various steaks, kangaroo, tuna and ostrich. Vegetarians are also catered for with dishes such as honey glazed tofu,

A Magical Experience in the Forest of Dean Puzzlewood is a unique and magical destination in the beautiful Forest of Dean. It’s a popular TV and film location used by the BBC for ‘Merlin’, ‘Dr Who’, ‘Atlantis’, ‘Wizards vs Aliens’ as well as Warners Bros for ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’. You can explore a mile of pathways winding through deep gulleys of mossy rocks, over wooden bridges and through fantastic tree and rock formations. It’s an enchanting place and has an atmosphere quite unlike any other wood. JRR Tolkien is reputed to have taken his inspiration for the fabled forests of Middle Earth from Puzzlewood, and it is easy to see why. The Forest’s former prison transformed! Once you enter the jail, through where the old court house once stood, you’ll come face to face with an extraordinary Aladdin’s Cave of curiosities. It’s an intriguing collection which includes many rare and historically significant exhibit items including the hangman’s noose that was used on the man they couldn’t hang - John ‘Babbacombe’ Lee. Also on display is the skull of the last man in Britain to be gibbeted, then hung, drawn and quartered! As you wander through the jail you’ll find wall to wall galleries of authentic and vintage signed photographs and ephemera from some of the world’s most notorious villains and criminals, and iconic celebrity figures slated and brought to heal by the tabloid newspapers. There are strange looking creatures on show too, including the products of Victorian taxidermy that were exhibited in this era. They include a sixlegged piglet, a kitten with five legs, a three-eyed puppy with two mouths, an eight-legged lamb with one head and four ears and a ten foot long maneating crocodile, and various other beasts of the jungle too. The Jail is also home to the largest single collection of Quadrophenia memorabilia in the world and includes the Vespa GS-Rally scooter that Sting (who played ‘Ace Face’) rode in the famous 1978 cult film, which was highly regarded as being one of the greatest British films of all times. Explore the Regency Spa town of Cheltenham, famous for its fine architecture, tree-lined Promenade, speciality shops, parks and gardens, numerous cafés, bars, bistros and restaurants and of course, the internationally acclaimed festivals and events which occur throughout the year.

Cheltenham has also become known as ‘the festival town of England’ with numerous festivals that attract thousands of visitors to the town throughout the year. These include the National Hunt, Jazz, Music, Science, Cricket and Literature Festivals.

Cheltenham became a fashionable place to visit in 1790 following the discovery of the Spa waters, and a subsequent visit from King George III. The heritage of that time left a huge impression on the town, and this can still be seen and admired in the magnificent Regency buildings of Montpellier and Pittville. The town’s spa waters can still be tasted at The Pump Rooms in Pittville Park.

Cheltenham takes great pride in its beautiful parks and gardens and has won the prestigious accolade of ‘Britain in Bloom’ on several occasions. Take a stroll around the Imperial and Montpellier Gardens, or through Pittville and Sandford Park to appreciate the floral splendour for yourself.
