GLOUCESTER

From Romans to Victorians - taking you on a fascinating journey into the past...

Gloucester was founded in AD97 and some of its ancient Roman heritage can still be seen today. Since then it has grown into a bustling city with a rich historic past. The focal point of the City has to be the beautiful Cathedral, which is steeped in over a thousand years of history. Its ‘Great East Window’ is one of the finest examples of English medieval stained glass, while its ‘Cloisters’ have been famously featured in the Harry Potter films. The heart of the City is home to two excellent shopping centres, ‘King’s Walk’ and ‘The Eastgate’ - home to many top name stores. 2

Places of interest include the City Museum & Art Gallery and the Folk Museum, both offering a diverse range of displays and unique exhibitions. You’ll also find Gloucester Guildhall - a fantastic venue offering music, theatre, cinema, comedy, workshops and more! A short walk will take you to the famous Docks. The now renovated Victorian warehouses served what was once the most inland port in Britain. If you enjoy activities, then why not try karting at JDR Karting or zap your way around the colourful lasertag arena.

Boat trips run from April until the end of October. Queen Boadicea II will take you on a 45-minute boat trip along the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal with running commentary. The boat departs from the quayside outside the museum. A Regency town full of fine architecture, shopping and famous festivals

Explore the Regency Spa town of Cheltenham, famous for its fine architecture, tree-lined Promenade, speciality shops, parks and gardens, numerous cafés, bars, bistros and restaurants and of course, the internationally acclaimed festivals and events which occur throughout the year.

Cheltenham has also become known as ‘the festival town of England’ with numerous festivals that attract thousands of visitors to the town throughout the year. These include the National Hunt, Jazz, Music, Science, Cricket and Literature Festivals.

Cheltenham became a fashionable place to visit in 1790 following the discovery of the Spa waters, and a subsequent visit from King George III. The heritage of that time left a huge impression on the town, and this can still be seen and admired in the magnificent Regency buildings of Montpellier and Pittville. The town’s spa waters can still be tasted at The Pump Rooms in Pittville Park.

Cheltenham takes great pride in its beautiful parks and gardens and has won the prestigious accolade of ‘Britain in Bloom’ on several occasions. Take a stroll around the Imperial and Montpellier Gardens, or through Pittville and Sandford Park to appreciate the floral splendour for yourself.

One of the finest and most beautiful destinations in the whole of England

The Cotswolds, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is one of the most beautiful and captivating areas of England. Known and loved by people across the world - with its warmth and character, where Cotswold stone walls, buildings, open skies, rolling grasslands, beech woods and picturesque villages make it a spectacular English landscape - once experienced, never forgotten. During Medieval times the Cotswolds were well known throughout Europe for supplying excellent wool. Many of the buildings and traditions that remain today are a result of this industry and can be enjoyed by visitors to the area.

48

There are many historical gems that span the ages, including Berkeley Castle, Chedworth Roman Villa, Sudeley Castle, Newark Park and Lodge Park. In the north Cotswolds near Moreton-in-Marsh, you will find Batsford Arboretum - a beautiful natural wonder with a large garden centre, shop and restaurant. Also on the Batsford Estate is the popular Cotswold Falconry Centre, flying birds of prey four times a day. Other wildlife attractions include Cattle Country, Cotswold Wildlife Park, Birdland & Jurassic Journey, Prinknash Bird & Deer Park and Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park.
