A Heart for Hospitality: Jeffrey Tan, Group

Director of Sales of Regal Hotels International, Shares His Journey

JEFFREY Tan, the Group Director of Sales of Regal Hotels International, is a seasoned professional with over 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry. He’s not just a sales expert; he’s a relationship builder, a friend to his clients, and a passionate advocate for the unique spirit of Regal Hotels.

From Glamour to Grounded Reality

Jeffrey’s initial draw to sales was the perceived glamour of the industry. But he quickly realized that sales in hospitality is a demanding, results-driven field. “Sales is the moving force behind everything,” he says. “It’s about understanding your clients’ needs, supporting them, and building genuine relationships.” And those relationships are what have kept him in the industry for over two decades.

Mr. Jeffrey Tan, Group Director of Sales of Regal Hotels International Navigating the Pandemic and the Power of Technology

The pandemic brought significant change to the hospitality landscape. Jeffrey acknowledges that technology played a crucial role in staying connected with clients during challenging times. “It’s not just about building relationships anymore; it’s about using technology to stay connected and provide support,” he explains. However,

he emphasizes that even with the rise of technology, the personal touch remains essential. “You still need to connect with people, understand their needs, and treat them with respect.”

Leading a Global Team and the Importance of Balance

As Group Director of Sales, Jeffrey manages a global team, overseeing sales for 15 markets across Regal Hotels’ 12 properties in Hong Kong. He oversees over 6,500 rooms and more than 100 meeting spaces. “It’s very taxing,” he admits. “I work long hours, even after office hours, because I have clients in the UK, the Middle East, and Russia.” He recognizes the need to balance his work life with his personal life, but he’s committed to his role and passionate about his work.

Regal Hotels: A Unique Offering in Hong Kong

Regal Hotels stands out in the Hong Kong market with its diverse portfolio of properties, each with its own personality and target market. “I always have a property to propose

to my clients, based on their specific needs,” says Jeffrey. From the centrally located Regal Hong Kong to the Iclub properties in Wan Chai and Shanghai, Regal Hotels offers a range of options to meet diverse needs.

Key Markets and Future Growth

Jeffrey highlights the Philippines as a significant market for Regal Hotels, driven by strong connectivity and a growing demand for travel. He’s also focusing on key markets like Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, the US, and Australia. He’s confident that the European market holds significant potential for future growth.

Hong Kong’s Position in the Global Landscape

Jeffrey believes that Hong Kong remains a crucial destination, acting as a stepping stone for travelers to Southeast Asia. He acknowledges that the city’s late reopening has impacted occupancy rates, but he’s optimistic about the future. “Hong Kong offers a unique blend of culture, vibrancy, and affordability, making it a compelling destination for travelers,” he says.

The Mice Industry and Regal Hotels’ Strengths

Regal Hotels is a strong player in the Mice (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry, with over 100 meeting spaces across its properties. Jeffrey highlights the Regal Airport Hotel, which boasts 30 function spaces, including a ballroom that can accommodate up to 1,500 people. He believes that Regal Hotels offers a diverse range of options for Mice events, catering to various needs and budgets.

Personal Travel and Advice for Aspiring Professionals

Jeffrey enjoys traveling with his wife, exploring Europe, Japan, and Korea. He advises aspiring professionals to be themselves, try new things, and not be afraid to explore different departments within the hospitality industry. “If you like it, go for it. If you don’t, change,” he says. “The most important thing is to find something you enjoy and to be passionate about what you do.”

Looking Ahead: Exciting Opportunities for Regal Hotels

Jeffrey is excited about the future of Regal Hotels, with plans to offer more value-added benefits for guests from the Philippines, including partnerships with airlines. He’s confident that Regal Hotels will continue to thrive in the everevolving hospitality landscape. 

Beyond a Leading Lady: A Woman Who Leads with Purpose

WHEN her husband, Police General

Rommel Francisco Marbil, was appointed Chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on April 1, 2024, Mary Rose Marbil—formerly active in the telecommunications industry—found herself stepping into a significant leadership role. As the wife of the PNP chief, she automatically became the adviser to the Officers’ Ladies Club (OLC), which has since transitioned into a foundation.

“The OLC was originally the Officers’ Ladies Club, but we have now turned it into the PNP OLC Foundation. When it was still a club, retirees were no longer part of it—it was exclusive to the spouses of active-duty officers. While there were separate clubs for retired spouses, our transition into a foundation ensures that membership is no longer limited to active-duty spouses. Even after retirement, we may remain part of it,” Mary Rose explained.

She clarified that this transition was essential to meet evolving needs and expectations. The group officially registered as a foundation with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in July 2024. While its name may suggest a focus on women, its mission extends beyond that. Under her leadership, the foundation’s primary goal is to provide support to both uniformed and non-uniformed PNP personnel, as well as their dependents. Many beneficiaries struggle with chronic kidney disease and cancer, making healthcare a key priority of the foundation. Additionally, it extends assistance through educational programs, livelihood support, and wellness initiatives.

A Leadership Rooted in Collaboration

Mary Rose’s leadership style contrasts with the structured, hierarchical nature of the PNP, where orders are followed without question.

“I always remind my team, ‘I’m here because I am my husband’s wife, but I’m not necessarily the smartest person in the room. I need to hear your ideas, too.’ This approach fosters a sense of ownership among them. I don’t want them to simply follow orders; they should be able to function independently and keep things moving forward even in my absence.”

At the end of 2024, she planned to retire from her telecommunications career alongside her husband on his 56th birthday, February 7, 2025. However, fate had other plans—his term was extended. Rather than stepping back, Mary Rose seized the opportunity to travel across the country, gaining firsthand insight into the pressing issues faced by PNP personnel. In just one month, she visited ten regions, reinforcing her commitment to making a difference.

With her unwavering dedication and hands-on leadership, Mary Rose Marbil continues to shape the PNP OLC Foundation into a symbol of hope. Looking ahead, she remains committed to expanding its reach, ensuring that no PNP personnel or their family members are left behind in times of need. 

MExtending a Lifeline of Hope

ARY Rose’s role in the PNP

OLC Foundation Inc. perfectly complements her husband’s work as the PNP Chief. In fact, it was her husband who encouraged her to focus on supporting PNP personnel and their families.

The foundation’s strategic priority is to extend assistance to both uniformed and non-uniformed PNP personnel, as well as their dependents, who are in need of help. One notable initiative that embodies this mission is the recently completed LAB (Love and Blessings) Virus Program—a project aimed at spreading compassion and support within the PNP community. Initially focused on aiding PNP personnel battling serious health conditions, the program has since expanded to include activities such as gift-giving events for children and support programs for the families of PNP members, fostering a deeper sense of unity and care.

“We are deeply committed to helping critically ill PNP personnel. The health service identifies those in need in each region, and we provide them with cash assistance and health kits. The strong support from the PNP Health Service

has made this effort possible. Every time we visit a region, the gratitude we receive fuels our passion to continue. It is fulfilling but also eye-opening, as we see just how many people require medical assistance,” Mary Rose shared.

So far, the foundation has successfully extended aid to nearly 500 individuals across the country. However,

Camp Bagong Diwa

healthcare remains a challenging area due to limited resources. Despite her husband’s programs and the foundation’s efforts, the demand for assistance continues to grow. This is why the OLC Foundation generates its own funding independently, without relying on the PNP’s budget. Mary Rose emphasized that the foundation operates as a non-profit organization, separate from the government. It raises funds through various initiatives, such as Singing Cops of the Philippines and Harmony for

Beyond healthcare, the foundation also focuses on welfare, education, and livelihood programs for PNP personnel and their families. A notable example is the Child Development Center for PNP personnel’s children. Initially challenged by funding constraints, this project has thrived through a partnership with the Quezon City Government, which now provides teachers and educational programs, ensuring its sustainability.

Heroes—events that not only entertain but also inspire communities to contribute to their cause.

“Because people see the value of our work, we receive help even without asking. We provide direct assistance to PNP personnel, and that inspires donors to support our mission,” she added.

their families. A notable example is the Child Development Center for PNP personnel’s children. Through unwavering dedication and strategic collaborations, the PNP OLC Foundation continues to serve as a lifeline of hope for those who dedicate their lives to public service. With every initiative, it strengthens the bonds within the PNP community, proving that compassion and unity can truly make a difference.

The LAB Virus That Touches Lives Across the Regions

In every stop, Mrs. Marbil found that what mattered most was not just the material help, but the emotional and moral support — the simple act of showing up and letting people know they mattered.

WHEN Gen. Marbil was asked how the PNP OLC Foundation could contribute to the greater good of the PNP, Brigadier Gen. Jezebel D. Medina, Director of the PNP Health Service, came up with a brilliant idea — the (LAB) Love and Blessings Virus. Inspired by the First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos’ LAB for ALL project, which brings essential medical and government services to Filipinos nationwide, this new initiative was designed to extend that same spirit of care to the members of the police force and their families.

LAB for ALL had already proven to be a game-changer in bridging gaps in the healthcare system, especially for those in far-flung areas. It offered free medical services, including

mobile clinics and laboratory tests, to help those who needed it the most. Seeing its success, the PNP OLC Foundation, Inc. decided to create their own version, aimed at providing medical assistance to sick members of the police force.

The heart behind the LAB Virus was Mary Rose Marbil, the PNP OLC Foundation Adviser, who saw it as an opportunity to spread love and hope across the country. Through her journey to various regions, she quickly realized that the most significant thing for cancer patients and their families wasn’t just the medical aid, but the recognition and support they felt from PNP officials and their wives. That recognition—knowing they were not alone—was a powerful source of comfort.

So, Mrs. Marbil set off to personally visit the regions, making sure to touch the lives of countless individuals along the way. From distributing financial assistance to providing gift packs, the program offered a tangible lifeline to PNP members and their loved ones. Each visit became a symbol of hope, a reminder that even in the darkest of times, they are seen, heard, and cared for.

In every stop, Mrs. Marbil found that what mattered most was not just the material help, but the emotional and moral support — the simple act of showing up and letting people know they mattered.

This initiative has become so much more than just a medical program. It’s a testament to the PNP OLC Foundation’s deep commitment to the men and women who risk their lives every day to protect the nation. By offering both medical aid and emotional support, LAB (Love and Blessings) is about fostering a sense of community and reminding everyone that no one stands alone in times of need.

As the LAB Virus continues to spread, its message of hope and love grows stronger, proving that even the smallest act of kindness can spark a wave of healing and connection in the most unexpected places. 

Beyond her love for the sea, she dreams of exploring the Philippines solely for leisure, free from work commitments. With 7,641 islands to choose from, she has no shortage of breathtaking destinations to visit.

A Deep Appreciation for Culture

When asked about her favorite among the regions she has visited, Mary Rose answers without hesitation: BARMM (Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao).

Wellness as a Way of Life

Despite her hectic schedule, Mary Rose prioritizes her well-being.

“I try to eat healthy. I don’t eat meat because I have allergies, and I exercise as much as I can,” she explains. For her, health is non-negotiable. “You really have to take care of yourself,” she emphasizes.

And it shows—her toned physique and vibrant energy are a testament to her dedication to a balanced lifestyle. She proves that discipline and self-care are essential elements of a fulfilling life.

Through mindful living, cultural exploration, and her love for travel, Mary Rose Marbil demonstrates that even those with demanding responsibilities can find ways to recharge. LTFRB: A Pillar of LGBTQIA+ Advocacy and Inclusivity

THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) continues to lead the charge for inclusivity and diversity within government institutions, anchored by the remarkable partnership of its Executive Director, Atty. Robert “Bob” D. Peig, CESO V, and LGBTQIA+ Association organizer, Ms. Bemz Dumlao Benedito. Both proud natives of Abra, Atty. Peig and Ms. Benedito share a deep commitment to creating safe, supportive spaces for LGBTQIA+ individuals within the agency and beyond.

A Visionary Beginning

The LTFRB LGBTQIA+ Association, a pioneering initiative conceived by Atty. Peig, was established to provide a robust support system for LGBTQIA+ employees and community members. This initiative marked a historic milestone as the first LGBTQIA+ association within the Department of

Transportation (DOTr). Atty. Peig’s leadership is rooted in his belief that “respect should transcend gender, focusing on humanity above all.”

This vision came to life through collaborative efforts with Ms. Bemz Dumlao Benedito, a tireless advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights and visibility. Together, they have built a dynamic community that celebrates diversity and champions equality, creating a culture of respect and empowerment across the LTFRB.

Key Milestones and Initiatives

1. Establishing Safe Spaces

The LTFRB LGBTQIA+ Association has become a sanctuary where members of the LGBTQIA+ community can find support and belonging. By fostering a culture of openness, the association has broken barriers and challenged stereotypes, making the LTFRB a model for inclusivity within government institutions.

2. Commemorating the Transgender Day of Remembrance

Each November 20, the association honors lives lost to transphobia-related violence during the International Transgender Day of Remembrance. This solemn event underscores the LTFRB’s commitment to advocacy, education, and fostering understanding about the challenges faced by transgender individuals.

3. Community Engagement and Outreach

Beyond internal programs, the association actively engages with external communities. The “Puso ng Pasko” program exemplifies this commitment, as LTFRB employees partnered with Barangay 76, Tondo, for a gift-giving event benefiting over 150 residents. By collaborating with Sangguniang Kabataan officials and other stakeholders, the association highlighted the importance of social responsibility and inclusivity.

4. Workshops and Awareness Campaigns

The association regularly conducts gender-sensitivity workshops, educating employees on topics such as pronouns, identity, and the power of inclusive language. These initiatives not only raise awareness but also ensure that respect for diversity

becomes ingrained in the agency’s culture.

A Transformative Partnership

The dynamic synergy between Atty.

Peig and Ms. Benedito remains at the heart of the LTFRB’s progress. Atty. Peig’s role as a straight ally has been instrumental in fostering a culture of acceptance, while Ms. Benedito’s leadership amplifies the voices of LGBTQIA+ members. Together, they have created a blueprint for what a truly inclusive agency can look like.

A Beacon of Change

The ripple effect of LTFRB’s

underscores the LTFRB’s pioneering role in advocating for equal rights and representation in the workplace.

Looking Ahead

The LTFRB’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity is more than a moment—it’s a mission. Through ongoing programs, events, and partnerships, the agency continues to champion the rights and dignity of LGBTQIA+ individuals while fostering understanding among employees and the public alike.

As Atty. Peig once said, “Lahat tayo ay may karapatan dahil tayo ay tao,

inclusivity efforts has been felt far beyond its walls. Inspired by the success of its LGBTQIA+ Association, other agencies within the DOTr and across government institutions have started to establish their own diversity programs. This growing movement

hindi dahil sa kasarian ng bawat isa.” These words resonate as a powerful reminder of the LTFRB’s dedication to building a future where everyone is seen, respected, and empowered.

A Call to Action

With leaders like Atty. Peig and advocates like Ms. Benedito at the helm, the LTFRB calls on other agencies and organizations to follow their lead in embracing diversity and inclusion. Together, we can create a society where no one is left behind, and every voice is valued. 

DARK ROAST COFFEEHOUSE –Maginhawa’s Best-Kept Coffee (and Cupcake) Secret

YOU wouldn’t know it was there if you weren’t looking for it.

Dark Roast Coffeehouse doesn’t scream for attention. No overly big signage. No sidewalk fanfare. Just a nondescript doorway tucked inside TKC Square along Maginhawa St. Blink and you’d miss it. But once you step inside, the story changes.

If you prefer bold and black, try the Coconut Americano. Strong and assertive, with a hint of coconut to balance the bitterness, leaving a tropical note on your tongue.

The place was packed. The kind of full that says, this isn’t a fluke. Regulars, curious strays, coffee pilgrims. And I became one of them real quick.

Inside, the vibe is a blend of brutalist and warm. Concrete and leather. Steel and droplights. Glass makes the space feel airy—like you’re inside a hip loft built on caffeine and conversation. Industrial, but homey. Functional, yet intimate. If you need a hideaway to work, write, or just watch life go by, this is it.

The Drinks That Stand Out

I ordered the cold Salted Caramel Latte—and it did not disappoint. This wasn’t your typical sweet sludge. It was a cleverly layered affair, with milk, caramel, and coffee presented separately and together. Like the symphony of a well-composed jazz trio. Sweet, with backbone.

the

Then, the Coconut Matcha. It’s creamy, balanced, and delightfully refreshing—no extra sugar needed. It’s like they turned a lazy Sunday afternoon into a drink. Be warned, though, this might cause an addiction for matcha lovers.

The Guava Blush is bright, fruity, and punchy. My Editorin-Chief, Cesar, and I immediately agreed—it could use a splash of gin or vodka. It’s practically begging for it.

A Cupcake Worth The Trip

The food? Surprisingly solid. I’m not a cake guy, but the Red Velvet Cupcake here is a game-changer. Krista, one of the owners, is on a mission to create the best red velvet in the universe. And I think she’s already there. Moist, not cloying, with just the right sweetness and creaminess.

But what really seals the deal isn’t just the coffee or baked goods—it’s the people behind it. The owners and staff truly care. It shows in their standards, their consistency toward quality, and the near-obsessive attention to detail. They’ve built something truly good. And it shows.

This isn’t a café for influencers looking for neon signs and flower walls. This is for people who truly, really get it.

And yeah, like the Terminator, I’d say—“We’ll be back.” Very soon, EIC Cesar and I—bringing gin in an inconspicuous tumbler. We’ll be putting the ‘gin’ in maGINhawa. Shhh, snitches will be jinxed. 

Behind the Badge and Beyond

DISCIPLINE. Integrity. Service. These core values define the Philippine National Police, shaping its officers and guiding their actions. Reflecting on my On-the-Job Training at Camp BGen Rafael T. Crame nearly two years ago, I now realize how these principles have influenced my own personal and professional growth.

As an intern at the PNP Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management (DIDM), I was immersed in a structured environment that emphasized teamwork, precision, and a deep sense of duty. I observed officers who upheld integrity in their work, ensuring that justice and service remained their highest priorities. This exposure left a lasting impression on me, instilling values that continue to shape my work ethic today.

One of the most impactful moments of my career so far was witnessing the embodiment of these principles beyond the force. In March 2025, I had the opportunity to meet Mrs. Mary Rose P. Marbil, whose leadership in transforming the PNP Officers’ Ladies Club into an SEC-registered foundation

highlighted the essence of service. Her vision to provide support not only to police officers and their families but also to individuals in need was a testament to the enduring commitment of those within the PNP community. Seeing her dedication reinforced my understanding that leadership is about purpose, not just authority.

Looking back, I see how my time at Camp Crame instilled in me a discipline that I still carry as a corporate employee. The structured environment taught me punctuality, intentionality, and efficiency—values that have become integral to my professional identity. The respect for deadlines, the responsibility to execute tasks with precision, and the commitment to serve with integrity are lessons that continue to guide me in my career.

As I reflect on my OJT experience, I recognize that it was more than just an internship. It was a defining chapter in my journey—one that deepened my appreciation for leadership, service, and discipline. The dedication I witnessed at Camp Crame remains an enduring source of inspiration, reminding me that no matter where I am, I can carry these values forward and make a meaningful impact. 
