A Taste of Nostalgia
Icannot help but feel nostalgic as we put together this Malabon issue—not because I grew up in this city, but because Pansit Malabon has always been close to my heart. It was the specialty of our family business, a humble yet well-loved enterprise that thrived in Quezon City.
I still vividly remember the flagship store my parents built along West Avenue in 1988. Back then, it was a modest takeout shop with a roof made of pawid—dried palm leaves that gave it a rustic charm. But beyond its simple facade was a business built on perseverance and a deep understanding of what brings people together: good food.
Pansit Malabon has long been a staple of celebrations, especially birthdays. It’s a dish rich in ingredients, flavors, and tradition, yet not everyone has the time or skill to make it from scratch. My parents saw an opportunity— not just to sell food but to be part of people’s milestones. With my mom’s culinary expertise and my dad’s marketing acumen, they poured their hearts into the business. Long before dawn, they would visit seafood markets to source the freshest ingredients, ensuring that every plate of Pansit Malabon was worth savoring.
To our delight, our little store became a melting pot of customers from all walks of life. It wasn’t unusual to see a Mercedes-Benz and a tricycle parked side by side, their owners sharing the same craving for a taste of home. As demand grew, we expanded our offerings to include other Malabon delicacies—kakanin, pichi-pichi, and puto. And just like that, what started as a small bahay kubo takeout spot evolved into a wooden store and, years later, a sturdy cement structure. Looking back, it reminds me of The Three Little Pigs—except in our case, each phase of transformation was a testament to resilience, not fear.
Today, Country Noodles Pansit Malabon stands as a beautiful reminder of my parents’ hard work and sacrifice—their unwavering commitment to giving us a better life. For that, I will always be grateful.
This issue is a celebration of Malabon’s rich culinary heritage, its grand churches, its dynamic first-ever female mayor, and the timeless flavors that bring us together. May it stir your own cherished memories, just as it has for me.
Enjoy the read!

How Mayor Jeannie Sandoval Is Transforming the City of Malabon

MENTION ‘Malabon,’ and most people instantly think of the famous noodle dish, Pansit Malabon. But beyond this well-loved specialty, the city has been making headlines in recent years—thanks to the dynamic leadership of Mayor Jeannie Sandoval.
The first-ever female mayor of the city shares with Experience Travel and Living her vision for her beloved city.
“My vision for Malabon is to be sustainable—one where families feel secure, businesses thrive, and government services are efficient and accessible. We are building a foundation of long-term solutions, not just temporary fixes,” the city leader shared.
But getting in the way of her vision is the resistance to change when she assumed office. To combat the old way of doing things, her office addressed this through transparency, engagement, and quick results.
Widely popular among her programs is the Malabon Ahon Blue Card (MABC), which serves as a multi-purpose identification card for the people of Malabon. It is the means by which various social and financial services are delivered to its 86,647 household heads efficiently and transparently.
In the same manner, the flagship housing project— the St. Gregory Homes Project in Barangay Panghulo— provides 1,380 climate-resilient homes, thus giving families a safe and stable place to live. The effort to make Malabon a more sustainable and environmentally friendly city was recognized by the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) for being a Disaster-Resilient, Climate Change Adaptive, and Sustainable Socialized Housing Project last year during its fifth-anniversary celebration.
Her good office had an answer to provide livelihood and economic empowerment. Its One Barangay, One Product initiative encourages small businesses, and its Public Employment Service Office (PESO) regular job fair connects residents in order to generate employment opportunities. “At the same time, we support local businesses through tourism and entrepreneurship programs. Events like the Tambobong Festival and Tambobong Cookfest celebrate Malabon’s rich culture and cuisine, attracting visitors and boosting local commerce,” Mayor Jeannie shared.
In an effort to create a business-friendly environment for entrepreneurs and job seekers alike, they have streamlined business processes by digitizing business permit applications, thus significantly cutting processing time as well as bureaucratic red tape. As a result, Malabon earned its first commendation from the Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA), placing 13th nationwide and 9th in NCR.

without financial burden. It is worth noting that its monthly medicine distribution has exceeded 200,000 medicines, benefiting over 11,000 individuals per month across all barangays. In partnership with the Malasakit Center, the local government provides P15.2 million in financial aid to assist 22,000 constituents with medical expenses in 2024.
Its Walang Tulugan Service Caravan brought medical and dental missions to 36,177 individuals, offering free consultations, nutrition services, and family planning assistance in 2024. Thus, the programs ensured that Malabueños have access to healthcare services no matter their financial situation.
Community Involvement
Mayor Jeannie Sandoval makes it a point to be attuned to the pulse of her constituents by reading and listening to their feedback, especially on social media. Valid concerns are immediately directed to the appropriate departments for action. Indeed, accessibility, responsiveness,
and proactiveness have been her cornerstones in addressing community needs.
“To enhance citizen participation, we launched TXT MJS, a platform initially designed to gather public feedback. It has since evolved into the 24/7 Malabon Emergency App, ensuring that community concerns are addressed promptly. We have also placed feedback boxes in government offices to make it easier for residents to share their thoughts. Additionally, we introduced the MEMA (Making It Easy for Malabueños) program, aimed at improving government services and increasing overall customer satisfaction,” the local executive added.
Hand in hand with community involvement, she and her office regularly engage with fellow Metro Manila mayors through the Metro Manila Council and the MMDA, particularly in initiatives related to traffic management and disaster response coordination. These efforts ensure that Malabon benefits from region-wide

policies that improve mobility, emergency preparedness, and public safety while contributing to the greater good of the National Capital Region.
The Measure of Success
With all these good measures in place to make Malabon a happy place to live in for its people, how does one measure the effectiveness of these
programs and initiatives?
“We measure the success of our programs and initiatives through a data-driven approach, ensuring that every peso spent has the maximum impact on the lives of Malabueños. Our goal is to reach as many beneficiaries as possible while minimizing costs. Ultimately, success is measured not just by the number of projects launched, but by the actual impact on people’s lives—how many families have stable housing, how many students graduate through scholarships, and how many residents secure jobs,” Mayor Jeannie asserted.
As for the future of her city, the beloved leader hopes that the progress her office has made becomes deeply embedded in Malabon’s governance framework—that the systems, policies, and programs they have built should remain long after her term ends. She envisions Malabon to be a city where every resident benefits from longterm, sustainable development—a place that continuously grows and evolves for future generations.
On the subject of what drives her to give her best for the city of Malabon and its people, Mayor Jeannie has this to say: “For me, leadership is not about power or position—it’s about making a real difference in people’s lives. That’s what keeps me pushing forward every day.”
Malabon is no longer just about its famous Pansit Malabon—it’s about its people, their progress, and a leader who genuinely listens and delivers. And as the city moves forward, one thing is certain—its future is in good hands.

SAN BARTOLOME PARISH: A TIMELESS WITNESS TO HISTORY
By: John Paolo Tampos
IN the heart of Malabon, San Bartolome Parish will welcome you. more than just a church—it’s a keeper of stories that have shaped generations. Established in 1599 by the Augustinian friars, this parish is older than the city itself and has become a living testament to centuries of devotion, resilience, and change.
San Bartolome Parish’s history is deeply rooted into the identity of Malabon. Officially becoming a parish in 1614, with Father Luis Gutierrez as its first vicar prior, it witnessed the growth of a community built around faith and tradition. When Father Diego de Robles took over in 1621, he began constructing the first stone church—a gradual project that evolved over decades, with each successor adding their mark to
the structure.
The church didn’t just stand through time—it lived through it. From colonial upheavals to revolutionary fervor, San Bartolome became more than a spiritual refuge. During the Philippine Revolution, the Katipuneros sought the church’s blessings before launching significant uprisings. Their devotion was practical and symbolic—a call for courage and unity in the face of struggle.
A Pillar of Community and Culture
For the people of Malabon, San Bartolome Parish isn’t just a religious institution—it’s part of daily life, woven into every feast, procession, and quiet prayer. The church has witnessed baptisms, weddings, and funerals, becoming a constant in a city that has seen immense change. Generations have passed through its doors, each finding comfort in its familiar presence.
The grand architecture, marked by its colonial design and enduring stone walls, holds echoes of centuries past. But it’s not just the physical structure that endures—it’s the shared moments, the stories, and the traditions that make San Bartolome a cornerstone of Malabon’s identity.
The Jubilee Year 2025: A New Chapter in an Ongoing Story
As the Jubilee Year 2025 approaches, San Bartolome Parish has been designated as a Pilgrim Church—a recognition of its rich history and enduring role in the spiritual lives of the faithful. While the Jubilee invites reflection and renewal, for San Bartolome, it feels like a natural continuation of a legacy already centuries deep.
For those who choose to visit during this sacred year, the
parish offers a space not just for indulgence and spiritual rituals but for connecting with a story that spans generations. It’s an invitation to stand where history and faith intertwine— and maybe, in the quiet moments, feel a part of something timeless.
A Living Testament to Time and Faith
San Bartolome Parish isn’t just an old church—it’s a reminder that some places carry the weight of history with grace. It’s a space where past and present meet, where every stone and arch speaks of resilience, devotion, and an enduring connection to the community.

My Malabon Culinary Adventure
A Foodie’s Journey Through Time and Taste
By Tony Agudo
MALABON is a city that wears its history on its streets and its plates. It’s a place where flavors are bold and unpretentious, where culinary traditions run deep, and as a foodie, you can tell - that every bite tells an interesting story. If you’re ready for a food trip that’s equal parts indulgent and nostalgic (and the best part: cheap!), then hop on, little grasshopper, and let’s explore the foodie gems of Malabon—one delicious stop at a time.
A Sweet Start: Valencia Triangulo at Aling Tessie’s
First things first, dessert before anything else! Yes, that’s a rule we strive to live by. At Aling Tessie’s Puto Balencia Triangulo (over at 46 Flores St.), you’ll find the delectable Valencia Triangulo—a crispy, golden triangle of saba bananas, jackfruit, and pinipig, all snugly wrapped in spring roll pastry, deep-fried, and coated with caramelized brown sugar. One bite and you’ll wonder why turon hasn’t always come in this perfect three-sided shape.
Crispy and Savory: Upeng’s Original Kikiam
Kikiam, but make it legit. Forget the rubbery, mass-produced versions you’ve gotten used to —Upeng’s Original Quekiam ( at 304 C. Arellano St.) is the real deal. Made from a mix of minced seafood, vegetables, and spices, wrapped in bean curd skin, and fried to a crisp, this Malabon classic is best dipped in vinegar for that perfectly tangy and tasty crunch. Kakanin
experience like no other. Dolor’s Assorted Kakanin (19 Gov. Pascual Ave.) is a colorful mosaic of six different rice cakes: biko, ube kalamay, kamoteng kahoy, kutsinta kalamay, mais kalamay, and the iconic sapin-sapin. It’s a sticky, sweet, and utterly satisfying taste of Malabon’s food heritage.
While you’re here, why not grab a Dolor’s Relyenong Bangus too? Unlike your average rellenong bangus, this one is 100% pure fresh milkfish meat—no fillers, just rich, flaky, flavorful goodness without any “langsa”(fishiness) at all.
The Iconic: Nanay’s Pancit Malabon
You cannot EVER visit Malabon without diving into a plate (or bilao) of the quintessential Pancit Malabon, and Nanay’s ( at 37 Gov. Pascual Ave.) serves up one of the best. Thick noodles drenched in a rich seafood sauce, topped with eggs, shrimp, and chicharron—it’s a veritable bowl of umami heaven.
Cassava Bliss: Arny Dading’s Pichi-Pichi
Next up, a “kakanin”
Next stop: Arny Dading’s Peachy-Peachy (also on Gov. Pascual Ave.). This cassava-based, gelatinous treat’s highlight is its soft, almost gooey texture, just the right side of sweet, and generously coated with grated cheese, providing a truly delicious salty contrast... It’s really a simple, common man’s
dessert, but one that keeps people from all walks coming back for more.
Puto Perfection: Hazel’s Special Puto
At Hazel’s Special Puto (107 Gen. Luna St.), you’ll find Malabon’s famous puto—light, fluffy, and almost cake-like in texture. Topped with salted egg and cheese, or stuffed with pork asado (puto pao), these little steamed wonders are proof that the humble puto deserves more respect and admiration. You really gotta try this one.
Crunch Time!: Judy Ann’s Crispy Pata
A food trip isn’t complete without something deepfried - crispy, juicylicious and simply glorious; Judy Ann’s Crispy Pata (over at 201 Gen. Luna St.) is exactly that for me. With a crispy, caramelized skin that gives way to tender, juicy, and flavorful meat, it’s no wonder this place
has been a Malabon institution since I was but a toddler in 1972. Just to clarify—this has nothing to do with the actress Judy Ann Santos, but the crispy pata? Definitely Famas award-worthy in my book.
Fried to Perfection: Jay-R’s Okoy
If you really love crispy, deep-fried (and “seafoody”) goodness then Jay-R’s Okoy at Concepcion Market is a mandatory - must-try. Yes, I know that’s redundant, so shoot me… Made with lots of fresh shrimp, mung bean sprouts, squash, tofu, and onions, all bound together by a “secret” batter, then deep fried in two different woks in practiced sequence, this is one dish best eaten(and first experienced) hot and fresh, right at the stall itself, dipped with its accompanying spicy vinegar dip - Oh yes, come to daddy… My mouth just got uncontrollably salivating, recalling this truly “okoy” experience.
A Sweet and “Happy” Ending: Betsy’s Broas
Last but not least, Malabon’s version of broas, at Betsy’s Broas (10 Rizal Ave. Ext.). Unlike the usual hard and crunchy broas, Betsy’s are soft, fluffy, and almost melt in your mouth. It’s the kind of treat that makes you feel like you’re eating a cloud. A very, very delicious cloud, one that puts a satisfied smile to your face.
The Verdict? Malabon is Officially, a Foodie’s Wonderland!
After this brief adventure, I hereby conclude - Malabon is more than just a city—it’s a food lover’s “fiesta” wonderland, where every dish tells a story of tradition, ingenuity, culinary passion and just simple, yet good taste. Whether you’re a fan of crispy, savory, sweet, or sticky delights, Malabon has something to satisfy every foodie’s craving.
So, are you ready to take on this ultimate Malabon food crawl? Then, don’t eat the day before, for maximum space and appetite, wear loose pants - preferably joggers (so you can loosen the string as your tummy distends from fullness!), and expect to fall in love with Malabon’s numerous culinary offerings, bite after enjoyable bite. Next dish please.

Forging Sustainable Partnerships through the Arts: Artdialogo Asia collaborates with DepEd Malabon
By Kuku Samson
“Art has the ability to sustain the enthusiasm of communities and forge partnerships that ensure everyone’s role is seen, heard and felt”
— Anna Karina Jardin
ART holds a power beyond expressing one’s creativity. A testament to this is the partnership between Artdialogo Asia and the Division of City Schools of Malabon. Their collaborative project, Seniskwela, merges creativity with education, giving students a platform for artistic expression and cross-cultural learning.
Led by artist and Artdialogo Asia CEO Anna Karina Jardin, Seniskwela was held at Tinajeros National High School in Malabon on February 26, 2024. The name
Learners from the Noghori Art School - SMK Tunku Ampuan Najihah in Seremban with HH Tunku Zain Al Abidin , Artdialogo Asia’s Anna Karina Jardin, teachers and Filipino volunteers
combines “Seni” (Malay for art) and “(e)Skwela” (Tagalog for school), reflecting its purpose. More than a one-day event, it has evolved into a movement, inspiring young minds to use art as a tool for storytelling and cultural exchange.
The event featured painting competitions, workshops, panel discussions, and breakout sessions, helping students nurture their creativity. It also introduced them to artistic influences from Malaysia and beyond, strengthening international ties. Since its launch, Seniskwela has expanded to Tawi-Tawi and continues to inspire young Filipino artists.
Learners and volunteers from the Filipino community and Soroptomist International Seremban all smiles with their collaborative piece for siningskwela 2025
HH Tunku Zain Al Abidin and Artdialogo Asia’s Founding Artist Anna Karina Jardin and Pn. Norhayati of the Noghori Art School standing beside the learner’s collaborative piece showcasing their impressions and learnings about the Philippines
This initiative was made possible through partnerships with the Embassy of Malaysia in the Philippines, the Lions Club, and Malabon-based art groups. Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval also expressed strong support for its impact on youth.
The idea to bring Seniskwela to Malabon stemmed from a conversation between Ms. Jardin , and a former high school teacher at PWU-JMD, Ms. Ana De Leon from Tinajeros National Highschool who had transitioned into the public school system. What began as a simple workshop has grown into a leadership program that encourages students to view art as a tool for communication, diplomacy, and change.
“Art is more than expression—it’s a way to connect, communicate, and build something bigger than ourselves,”
Ms. Jardin shared. Having lived abroad for nearly a decade, she realized the importance of sharing Filipino identity and traditions on a global scale.
Despite challenges in keeping Seniskwela inclusive and free from political influence, Ms. Jardin remained committed to the students and local communities, ensuring the program stayed true to its mission.
Looking ahead, she has just launched “Siningskwela”
for
in Malaysia last February 25-27, 2025, an evolving international art trail in collaboration with the International Youth Center of Malaysia,The Ministry of Youth and Sports, and The patronage of the arts in Negri Sembilan of His Highness Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin ; with the support of the Philippine Embassy in Malaysia and the filipino community. She hopes that this initiative will continue to champion Filipino heritage worldwide through the support of the Filipino communities abroad and art patrons.
By integrating art, heritage preservation and cross cultural understanding into education, they are helping young minds think critically, express themselves confidently, and see the world from a broader perspective. Artdialogo Asia and the leadership of Ms. Jardin continues to impact thousands of lives creatively in and out of the country.
