We call our annual report “Stories of Opportunity” because that’s how we approach business at VGM. Every new day creates a wealth of opportunities not only for our employee owners, but for our customers, our families, and our communities—now and for generations to come.

Welcome to VGM’s 2022 year in review.

Our stories this year center around the next generation. They speak to the power of employee ownership and its ability to transcend the status quo. When you’re an employee owner, you’re empowered to focus on the future, to provide forward-thinking solutions, to take pride in what we do, and to build something you can pass on to the next generation.

We hope you enjoy learning about our employee owners and the future we’re building toward here at VGM. Whether you’re part of the VGM family, thinking about joining us, or just an interested friend, we’re glad you’re here. Thanks for being part of the VGM journey.

Celebrating Employee Ownership

As a 100% employee-owned company, we get to create a workplace that works for us, now and into the future. That means working hard, but making the time to celebrate the wins.

2RM Joins the VGM Family

Heartland's Best Year Yet

In 2022, nearly 1000 HME professionals from 44 states and Canada gathered in downtown Waterloo for education, networking, and fun. From discussing business best practices to enjoying the Iowa cow milking experience, our members were treated to the best Heartland Conference to date.

Owners Only

Cheers were plentiful at our annual shareholders’ event where we revealed how our company share value increased by 10% and reviewed, our contribution benefit level was at an astonishing 29%, and finally, how our commitment to employee ownership benefits our mutual success. From Phoenix, Arizona, to Portland, Maine, what a celebration!

Ownership Milestones

Each year, we celebrate and thank our employee owners who reach key milestones. In 2022, we were thrilled to have so many employees able to join us at the VGM Farm to celebrate their milestone anniversaries.

In 2022, over 140 fellow employee owners joined the VGM family from Two Rivers Marketing. One of the nation’s largest full-service B2B marketing agencies, 2RM still operates out of their headquarters, a 1935 General Motors warehouse in Des Moines’ East Village.

2RM Human Resources Manager Julie Heuton said the transition has been both smooth and rewarding—something she attributes to employee ownership.

“2RM is very familiar with the employee ownership mindset, and the opportunity to continue contributing to an employeeowned company is a big plus for 2RM team associates.”

VGM Awards Winner Spotlight: Emily McCormack, Director of Operations, VGM Insurance

Emily has been part of the VGM family for 11 years and is the director of operations for VGM Insurance. She’s had a lot of wins during her career, but 2022 is going to be tough to beat.

Not only was Emily announced as the 2021 Employee Owner of the Year during VGM's annual awards ceremony, she also became a mom.

Emily is a shining example of VGM’s values. She also demonstrates that, at VGM, you don’t have to choose between your career and family. Your fellow employee owners are going to cheer you on along your journey. Continued on page 22.

Traveling Trophy

The VGM Traveling Trophy is a peer-to-peer award passed from one employee owner to another in recognition for making a difference. In 2022, it was passed to more than 50 employee owners going above and beyond for their work peers.

VGM Insurance was named one of the 2022 Best Places to Work in Insurance

“We are excited to once again be recognized as one of the Best Places to Work in Insurance,” said Jim Nygren, president of VGM Insurance. “Our entire team understands that to support our customers, we must support each other. We’ve cultivated a culture that encourages collaboration and professional growth, allowing each employee owner to provide the exceptional service our customers deserve.”

“Being named Employee Owner of the Year further solidified how lucky we all are to be fellow employee owners by reinforcing the value our leadership teams place on the work each of us do on a daily basis. Our efforts are recognized and appreciated.”

Leading for the Next Gen

Wander the halls of VGM’s headquarters in Waterloo, Iowa, and it won’t take long to realize it’s not like most companies. Bright graphics line the walls. Posters celebrating the winners of the past year’s VGM Awards hang prominently under spotlights. And there’s no shortage of smiling employee owners who seem genuinely happy to be at work (the coffee bar may play a small role in this). This is to say, it’s not what you think of as traditional corporate America.

And that’s precisely why Dax Oliveira, a developer in VGM HOMELINK, fits right in.

“I’m nontraditional everything,” Dax said. “I was a nontraditional college student. I’m originally from a remote town in north-central Brazil. I’ve switched careers, and I’ve been a stay-at-home dad.”

Dax’s tradition of nontradition means he brings a unique perspective wherever he is, something that’s been a real asset to VGM (more on that later). And in keeping with this theme, the circumstances that led Dax to make his way to VGM start with something a little unexpected: a request for peanut butter.

Dax started his college career studying music education in Brazil in a town of 1.5 million people, a drastic change from his small town. His college, Universidade Federal de Goiás, had a student exchange program with the University of Northern Iowa, and he was one of the students tasked with helping international students in the program adjust to life in Brazil.

During this time, peanut butter wasn’t abundant in Brazil. And Dax was hooked.

“My first interaction with my now-wife Cassandra was on Facebook,” Dax said.

“I learned she was coming to Brazil as part of the exchange program, so I messaged her asking if she would be willing to buy some peanut butter on my behalf. And she was kind enough to agree. Unfortunately, her first actual words to me were: ‘Bad news. Your peanut

butter got dumped.’ But two weeks later, we were dating. And the rest, as they say, is history.”

Several years later, Dax and Cassandra found themselves in Chicago where Dax was working as a customer service agent for United Airlines. Eventually, he worked his way into the training department while also earning his bachelor's degree as a parttime student.

In 2018, the two went back to Brazil for a change of scenery. Dax was looking for a role in his preferred field of human resources, but there were no jobs to be found. So, he decided to switch careers and took part in a coding boot camp. Just as he was about to start his new career, Dax and Cassandra got great news. They were expecting their first child, and they decided it made the most sense for Dax to stay home with their son.

During this time, Dax continued looking for developer jobs and did find a position with a pharmaceutical startup in late 2020.

“I appreciated the opportunity,” Dax said. “But the company wasn’t really a good fit for the technology I’d learned or culturally. It ended up working out, though. My wife and I were expecting our second child, and we were looking to move back to the states.”

In February 2022, Dax and his family moved to the Cedar Valley, something Dax admitted

“I’ve worked in two different countries and different states. I haven’t heard of many people who have this kind of culture at their companies.”
6

he was a little hesitant about. Waterloo and Cedar Falls certainly aren’t Chicago, after all. However, any worries Dax had about not fitting in in Iowa went away quickly after he started at VGM.

“From the moment I talked to the recruiters, to being hired as an intern, to then being hired again as a developer,” Dax said, “I just had people who believed in me. And that’s all you need.”

Dax wasn’t with VGM long when the Pitchabaloo event signups went out. He’d already heard about the difficulty that comes with trying to find developers in the area. So, stretching outside of his comfort zone, he decided to make a pitch: If we can’t find

the right developers, why don’t we train them ourselves?

He then set out to concept a coding boot camp—like the one that fueled his own career—to implement right here at VGM. His pitch actually took the top prize at the Pitchabaloo event and he’s now working with leaders to realize his vision. HOMELINK Senior Vice President Tera O’Hare said, “The fact that he saw a challenge and came up with a possible solution, despite limited tenure or knowledge— this shows great initiative and emulates what we love to see in our team members, being a leader wherever you are in the company.”

Dax is a great case study in being a leader no matter where you are, and of not being afraid to speak up when you have an idea. And he’s quick to point out—that’s just part of the culture around VGM.

“I love the culture and the possibilities of meeting people within different divisions,” Dax said. “It’s a place of opportunities. Put yourself out there. The people and resources you get access to is 10x more than you can see at the surface. I’ve worked in two different countries and different states. I haven’t heard of many people who have this kind of culture at their companies.”

Building Connections

A culture of close relationships where everyone is welcome to be themselves and has the opportunity and flexibility to achieve their goals. That’s why VGM continues to create new opportunities to learn and grow together, cultivating the next generation of leaders.

Women in Leadership

Evolving Leader Program Launched in 2022

The first class of VGM’s Evolving Leader Program graduated in December after six months of programming. The curriculum was built around the five core competencies: Leadership Mindset, Communication Skills, Business Relationship & Trust, Decision Making & Courage, and Personal Development. Congratulations Class of 2022!

Women in Leadership (WIL) is a strategic initiative to support, motivate, and empower women to recognize their ability to be leaders within the organization. New members are nominated each year to join a nine-month program and then remain in development together as alumni of WIL. Some of their efforts over the past several years include volunteering with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, formalizing a mentorship program, and improving VGM’s Pitchabaloo competition. Learn more about WIL and VGM’s goal to empower and promote women leaders in this video.

Bringing Leaders Together

VGM’s 2022 Leadership Summit was held July 18-19 and saw more than 200 VGM leaders from across the country gather in person to discuss how to elevate each other and our members, customers, and patients. Every two years, the summit’s program helps employee owners gain the knowledge, perspective, and energy to lead VGM toward continued growth.

VGM Young Professionals

2022 was a landmark year for VGM Young Professionals (YP). They got creative early in the year with virtual events to engage members and welcome new employee owners. VGM Chief People Officer Sara Laures kicked off their in-person professional development efforts, the first in years. YP also ramped up networking events, with trips to Three Pines Farm and Mersim’s Kitchen, as well as volunteering at the Festival of Trees. With all the opportunities to capitalize on what VGM Group and YP has to offer, members felt a new level of excitement in 2022. And the group only plans to build on that momentum.

Employee Owner Spotlight:

Molly Chicchelly, Client Experience Manager

As a finalist for the 2022 Employee Owner of the Year Award, Molly epitomizes going above and beyond. Every single day, she demonstrates how one person can make an impact that’s felt throughout VGM. And she does it by aiming high and working hard.

“Years ago, I wrote down some seemingly hard-to-reach goals. One of them was: How do I become a VGM Award finalist? Know that your dreams can be a reality. Work hard every day, ask to be seen, and assume ownership in this company. It is so rewarding.”

Getting involved is a key to Molly’s success. She’s participated in VGM programs such as Women in Leadership and serves as one of VGM's expert Journey Guides for VIP tours of main campus. And as chair of VGM’s Young Professionals (YP) committee, she helped increase engagement among this growing group, which currently includes 60% of VGM employee owners.

Molly is always pushing herself for selfimprovement, while encouraging others and celebrating their successes. And she’s a role model to aspire to when it comes to creating your future.

Leader Cohorts

Consisting of employee owners in leadership positions, these ongoing groups offer continued development and create a network where leaders can learn ways to better serve their teams. In 2022, the Leadership Cohorts accelerated their efforts. They discussed community development related to the Lost Island Theme Park from the Bertch family, collaborated with an Asperger’s group on leading teammates on the autism spectrum, and met to break down major points of VGM’s five-year plan with CEO Barb Anderson. All this in addition to the monthly peer-led meetings covering all areas of leadership in today’s environment.

Deepening VGM Culture

Meet Mariellys Gutierrez. Originally from Venezuela, she’s currently the regional manager of VGM Fulfillment’s southern facilities in Phoenix and Nashville. She also just so happens to be the winner of the 2020 VGM Problem Solver award. For Mariellys, though, problem solving has always been a team effort.

10

“We had a lot of major projects in 2022,” Mariellys said. “Probably one of the biggest was the transition to our new D365 system. It was maybe the most challenging time of my career. It impacted every employee owner at every Fulfillment center. That meant a lot of long hours and constant coordination between the teams. Fortunately, we have a close-knit group among the warehouses.”

That closeness isn’t just a happy accident, however. It’s a result of employee ownership and the culture Mariellys and her team cultivate. Because if you want employee owners invested in company success, you have to invest in the employee owners. It’s a story Mariellys knows well. After all, she’s lived it.

In 2017, Mariellys was a packer in the Nashville location before it was acquired by VGM. It wasn’t long after she became an employee owner that her talent for problem solving and connecting people caught attention of leadership. She was approached about taking on a supervisory role in the returns department. Of course, this meant Mariellys had a couple of challenges ahead of her…

“My English was not very good,” Mariellys said. “I remember Sergio [Galindo] said to me, ‘You have so much potential here. What are you waiting for?’ It was the motivation I needed.”

Mariellys then set out to learn both a new role in returns and a new language, all at the same time. She relied on her VGM

family to help her develop at work. Meanwhile, she looked to family to develop her English skills.

“My husband’s grandfather knows English and loves Venezuelan cooking,” Mariellys said. “So, I proposed an exchange: my home cooking for English lessons. There were many times I thought my head would explode between learning returns and English, and it’s surreal that I actually tackled so much at one time.”

Her hard work certainly paid off—not only for herself, but for the entire VGM Fulfillment team. Mariellys has been able to deepen the employee ownership culture—by both helping ensure our growing group of Spanish-first speakers are heard and by helping explain the importance of employee ownership and the ESOP.

“Younger people tend to be focused more on a day at a time, on what’s in their bank account,” Mariellys said. “So when I explain the ESOP, I call it the bank account of the future. It’s savings that VGM just puts in there for you. It’s an investment in us. And the harder we work, the more that investment pays off.”

Mariellys admits it’s still hard to really understand until you get that first ESOP statement. She understood the concept, but everything became real when she and her husband opened up that first envelope.

“I told my husband,” Mariellys said, “if this keeps up, in 15 to 20 years, we’re going to be…free of stress.” There was a pause before “free of stress” with a look on her face like she was deciding between saying “filthy rich” and her characteristically humble response.

As a 100% employee-owned company, VGM and its culture can be a little surprising to some. VGM is truly focused on the long term, on creating and sustaining growth and success well into the future— for the company and for every employee owner.

“I tell everyone who starts, give that extra 10%. It’ll be worth it,” Mariellys said. “You never know where your career could take you at VGM. I never thought I would be a regional manager, or a supervisor before that. But here I am. And VGM gave me both the opportunity and the tools to make it happen.”

Growing the Business

VGM's customers and partners rely on us to keep an eye on the shifting landscape in our fields, looking for opportunities for growth. Our employee owners are always looking to deliver next-gen solutions. And in 2022, they continued to deliver.

HME News Business Summit Sees Record Numbers

The move to Nashville proved to be a success for the HME News Business Summit, known for high-level business education and well-deserved time to unwind. The September event, hosted by United Publications, marked record numbers of providers in attendance.

Fulfillment Executes Conversion to D365

“Overall, the conversion went well. We had some hiccups and bumps in the road, but we worked as a team to overcome them quickly and serve our customers in the best way possible,” said VGM Fulfillment Vice President of Customer Experience Sarah Conger.

This new system offers better security and functionality, pushes the limits of capacity, and is hosted on the cloud, providing business continuity and optimal disaster recovery.

The van Halem Group Saves Clients Thousands

Following an audit, an HME business was left with an overpayment of nearly $152,000. Although the denials were only related to technical issues and not medical necessity, The van Halem Group appeals consultant, Sandra Gauron, addressed each denial on nearly 350 claim line items. This led to a reduction of the overpayment to just over $14,000 with 294 claim lines overturned, only 49 upheld, and three partially upheld. This kind of dedication—and savings of $138,000—is what customers can expect from the team at The van Halem Group.

12

Redstone Delivers Solutions

Throughout 2022, the Redstone team worked to transfer policies, procedures, and other content from old systems to a new system for their customer, Berkshire Hathaway Energy (BHE). The stakes were high. If the project didn’t hit specific milestone deadlines, BHE could have triggered a shutdown of the Gas and Transmissions Pipeline all along the Midwest and Pacific Northwest. Redstone developer Bray Reid got very creative with his schedule and put in late hours on many weekends in September and October to keep things running. He built strong trust and provided memorable service to our customer during a time of extreme stress.

Strategic Imaging Develops New Strategies

The Strategic Imaging team is known for staying at the forefront of change. SI employee owners Kaden Isaacson and Noel Guzman took on new roles this year with the launch of the Asset Recovery Program. The new program ensures more patients receive adequate equipment during complications from global supply chain shortages.

With Strategic Imaging General Manager Tim Brenden, the SI team added refurbishment and recycling of medical devices to their list of services to keep up with the everchanging demand of patients/customers.

VGM Education Levels Up Its Customer Service

Imagine having to manually enter and manage data for roughly 17,000 people. That was only part of one person’s job at AdaptHealth before VGM’s developers and Education team collaborated on a solution. Now, thanks to a new application programming interface (API), AdaptHealth’s global partners, contractors, and employees are automatically entered into the VGM Education learning management platform when they’re entered into AdaptHealth’s HR system.

By working together, the VGM teams showed that—no matter the challenge—VGM has the expertise to solve it. They deepened our relationship with a customer doing important work to care for our country’s patients. And they proved that what we do matters.

“We were able to integrate their HR system with our learning system, and their compliance had countless hours freed up.”

Protecting Our Investment

No one can predict the future, but everyone can prepare for it. At least, that’s how our employee owners see it. We know the work we do each day matters. And we take steps to ensure we can continue to serve our customers and communities.

New Compliance Teams Adds Protection

In 2022, VGM established a new Corporate Compliance team, whose purpose is to embody and promote the Power of One Principle to Protect the Company. They do this by identifying risk and ensuring compliance with applicable state and federal laws, accreditations, contractual commitments, and policies.

Facilities Team Works to Protect Our Company

As the group who are likely to be first to show up and last to leave each VGM building each day, the Facilities Services Team spent 2022 enhancing their skills to keep our business and employee owners safe. Here are a few of their accomplishments:

• In the spring, almost the whole team received CPR training and became certified in CPR.

• Five members of the Facilities Team completed a Building Operator Certification class, which provided them knowledge and skill enhancement in key activities associated with energy efficient building operations. From heating and air systems to lighting and air quality, they learned ways to save energy, save money, and provide a comfortable and safe working environment.

“The class gave all of us an opportunity to not only learn more about the systems we have in place, but also information and tools to try to improve those systems.”
PROTECTOUR COMPA 14
-Kim Bemus, Facilities Manager for VGM Group

VGM Crisis Communications

Communication is not usually top-of-mind in the middle of an emergency, but it can be a crucial part of maintaining safety and our company’s reputation. That’s why VGM has invested in crisis communications training and preparation.

Now, VGM has a crisis communications plan, manual, and designated team; a leadership team who is trained to handle media interviews; and a video and communications team ready to hold a press conference at a moment’s notice.

Who’s Catching the Most Phish?

Every year, we get better at protecting our company against malicious email phishing attacks. The VGM Human Centric Cyber Security Committee conducted a phishing contest throughout February 2022. Look how well we did: These individuals caught the most malicious emails in 2022. Way to keep our company safe!

“A crisis communications plan is like an insurance policy. You hope you’ll never have to use it, but you’re glad it’s there if you need it.”

Passing Ownership Pride to the Next Gen

Making a difference is part of our everyday at VGM. The work we do is important—though sometimes, we forget just how important. Some might even call our employee owners heroes.

Missy Ober was reminded of this last fall. Her son Benji’s third-grade class had a dress-up week. And on one particular morning, Benji had a nice surprise for his mom.

“When he came out of his room, he was wearing one of my old VGM Heartland Conference T-shirts,” Missy said. “He told me it was dress like a hero day, and he wanted to dress like me for school. I had no idea he was planning on doing this. My heart melted.”

Missy dashed around finding more VGM items to complete the ensemble, including a VGM hat and Power of One lanyard. And voila! Benji was officially a future employee owner. And Missy was a super proud mom.

“I’m sure he’s not fully aware of what being a VGM employee owner entails, but it is definitely making an impact on him,” Missy said. “I know the hard work I put in now will make for a better future for my family and my son. I am part of something bigger than just me. I believe it also instills a sense of pride and ownership that is passed on to my son that will no doubt help him build his leadership skills.”

Missy and Benji show us that the power of employee ownership extends well beyond the walls of our offices. They remind us that we’re building something we can be proud to pass to the next generation of employee owners.

Strengthening Our Community

When you join the VGM family, you don’t just work here— you own the place. You get to play an active role in making a positive impact on the community.

Be the Change: Operation Threshold

Our 2022 Be the Change partner was Operation Threshold, a community action agency serving Black Hawk, Buchanan, and Grundy counties in Iowa. The mission of Operation Threshold is to collaborate, educate, and provide services to help meet the basic needs of people and to create opportunities for self-sufficiency. Two financial donations totaling $27,500 were presented to the organization. Employees also volunteered by stuffing bags with toys and books for area libraries to hand out to children.

Community Giving

For years, VGM has been dedicated to supporting local organizations, each quarter focusing on a different area. In 2022, our quarterly focuses centered around Public Safety, Education, Health and Wellness, and Veterans.

Donations for the year totaled $52,700!

Employee Spotlight: Tosha Harris, First Impressions Receptionist

Owning your ownership isn’t just about being part of the ESOP. It’s about taking pride in your work and understanding that you have the ability to make a positive impact on the company and community every day—even from your first day. Just ask Tosha Harris, who joined the VGM family in July of 2022.

“I was at my previous place of employment when I got the call from VGM,” Tosha said. “I was so excited, I actually went and hid in a closet to accept the offer.”

As the first impressions receptionist, there’s certainly no hiding for Tosha now. She’s the first person most people meet when they visit VGM. With her people skills and wealth of experience, she quickly made the position her own.

If you haven’t already, stop by and say hi to Tosha. She hasn’t been with VGM long, but she’s already part of the family. And she’ll make you feel part of it too.

Family Fund

Throughout 2022, over $60,000 was raised by employee owners for the VGM Family Fund. Through a company-wide silent auction, a T-shirt drive in VGM Insurance, an auction developed by HOMELINK volunteers, and tip jar promotions at various gatherings, employee owners were able to support 136 fellow owners in true need. To donate to the Family Fund through Venmo, scan the QR code.

Leftover stock from sales within VGM’s communities left great opportunities to give to local organizations. Over 350 pieces of leftover home medical equipment was donated to Cedar Valley Hospice to serve their patients and families throughout 2022. VGM was also able to donate leftover jewelry and women’s work shoes to House of Hope, much to their excitement!

“I love my job and all of the people. From the moment I started at VGM, I knew—this is my forever job.”

Easing the Way for Working Parents: On-Site Child Care Coming to VGM in

Nothing changes things quite like bringing a little one into the world. And at VGM, it’s one of our favorite events to celebrate. For several years running, we’ve held an annual Baby Boom event to welcome the next generation into the VGM family. During this event, new and expecting parents at VGM receive dinner for their family, and VGM senior leaders even deliver. This past year, we were fortunate to celebrate over 60 new arrivals during our Baby Boom event!

The Baby Boom event is certainly a favorite among employee owners. After all, who doesn’t like cute baby photos? But at VGM, we’re committed to ensuring the celebration continues— by offering support for working parents wherever we can. And one area where parents really needed that support was finding quality, affordable care for their little ones.

The lack of child care options has been a growing concern throughout the Cedar Valley, especially for children under the age of two. And seeing the stress put on working parents and their families, not only at VGM but throughout the community, VGM set out to find a solution. And in December of 2022, we announced our decision: VGM will open an on-site child care center in late 2023!

“For years, a significant shortage of child care options has put undue pressure on many working parents in the Cedar Valley, including our employee owners,” said Sara Laures, VGM Group’s chief people officer. “We wanted to be part of the solution, and we are excited to offer muchneeded support to families by helping address child care needs with a reliable, quality, reasonably priced option.”

20

VGM had already implemented work from home and flexible schedule options for many roles. Yet, child care continued to be a challenge for employee owners. To gauge the need for child care among employee owners, VGM conducted a survey, which showed parents were having a harder time than most realized. One respondent said:

This parent certainly wasn’t alone. In fact, 89% of respondents with children reported having to request time off or a change of work schedule or location due to child care issues. We knew these stories extended well beyond our doors, which only solidified VGM’s decision.

“At VGM, we are committed to making a difference in the lives of our employee owners and our communities,” said Mike Mallaro, VGM Group’s CEO. “We are honored to be able to partner with Community United to ease the way for working parents and their children.”

The new child care center provides spaces for up to at least 66 children ages 6 weeks to 5 years. And it will feature appropriate space for classes, as well as playground facilities. To operate the child care center, VGM Group is partnering with Community United Child Care Centers, which operates three other child care centers in the Cedar Valley.

Even before the announcement, employee owners were getting excited about the prospect of an on-site child care center. As one survey respondent noted:

“If VGM offered child care, this would hands down make all of my friends want to quit their jobs and come retire with us at VGM. I already think it couldn’t get any better, but the perks keep coming. I love my job!”

To that, we say, invite your friends. We’d love to welcome them (and their little ones) as the next generation of VGM employee owners.

“Dependable child care is a major stressor for me as a working parent. It can be distracting when I’m at work trying to figure out how we will get the kids from point A to B. Or, between my husband and myself, determining who is less impacted that week if day care were to close. And I feel guilty modifying my schedule because workers without children are able to remain present.”

60+ kids joined the VGM family in 2022… no wonder we’re building a day care.
