Dentro del complejo Puerto Los Cabos, el resort se convierte en un santuario de descanso que exhibe la historia y cultura de nuestro país. Al llegar, una terraza elevada rodeada de cactus y agaves con vistas al mar nos regala la primera postal. Aquí, la experiencia comienza con la presentación de nuestro tosoani o “curador de sueños”. Será un acompañante y guía durante el viaje, encargado de diseñar itinerarios a la medida, orientarnos y, haciendo honor al título, cumplir cualquier deseo.

at the southern tip of the baja california peninsula, where the desert meets the sea, lies Zadún, the fourth Ritz-Carlton Reserve property in the world. Within the Puerto Los Cabos complex, the resort is a sanctuary of rest that showcases the history and culture of Mexico. Upon arrival, an elevated terrace, surrounded by succulents and overlooking the sea, gives us our first postcard-worthy view. Zadún, cuyo nombre proviene de un juego con la palabra dunas (sand dunes), fue diseñado para mimetizarse con el paisaje rocoso de Baja California Sur. La propiedad modular se extiende frente a la costa bajo estructuras de colores terrosos y materiales naturales, con ventanales abiertos y terrazas que acercan el interior con el exterior. En 42 villas de dos pisos se distribuyen 115 habitaciones. Con techos altos, tonos neutros y muebles de madera, los interiores –a cargo del estudio Uribe-Krayer– se sienten amplios y acogedores. La decoración rinde homenaje al trabajo artesanal mexicano, y además, es funcional: en cada cuarto hay rebozos bordados a mano, cobijas de lana natural, sombreros y bolsas de paja para bajar a la playa.

Zadún, whose name is a play on the word “dune” (as in sand dunes), was designed to blend in with the rocky landscape of Baja California Sur. The modular property extends along the coast; the earth-toned structures feature natural materials, open windows and terraces that bring the outside in. The resort’s 115 rooms are distributed across 42 two-story villas. With high ceilings, neutral tones and wood furniture, the interiors, designed by Uribe-Krayer studio, feel spacious and cozy. The decor pays tribute to Mexican craftsmanship, and it’s also functional: each room comes stocked with hand-embroidered shawls, natural wool blankets, and straw hats and bags for venturing down to the beach.

SABORES DE LA BAJA La pieza arquitectónica central es un edificio de metal con recortes geométricos que se iluminan desde dentro al anochecer. En su interior está el bar Candil, que resguarda una amplia selección de destilados de agave e imaginativos cocteles inspirados en las flores, los sabores y las tradiciones mexicanas. La propuesta gastronómica se divide en tres restaurantes. A un lado de Candil está Humo, que rinde tributo a las parrillas latinoamericanas con cortes de carne, pescados y mariscos frescos con sazones ligeras para apreciar la frescura de los ingredientes de Baja California. A unos pasos cuesta abajo, frente a la playa, está Equis, una barra especializada en ceviches. Aunque el menú varía ligeramente de acuerdo con la pesca del día, los platos permanentes –e imperdibles– son el ceviche peruano mixto, el de atún con aderezo de chile serrano y el vegetariano. El restaurante insignia es El Barrio. Inspirado en los mercados mexicanos, el espacio está decorado con colores vivos, murales folclóricos y vajillas de cerámica. Aquí se sirven desayunos mexicanos, antojitos tradicionales, tlayudas y tacos.

FLAVORS OF THE BAJA The central architectural element is a metal building with geometric cutouts that are illuminated from within at dusk. Inside is the Candil bar, featuring a wide selection of agave spirits and imaginative cocktails inspired by the flowers, flavors and traditions of Mexico. On the culinary front, the resort has three restaurants. Next to Candil is Humo, which pays tribute to Latin American grilling, with prime cuts and fresh seafood, seasoned ever so lightly to let the fresh local Baja California ingredients shine. A few steps down the hill, you’ll find the beachfront ceviche bar, Equis. Although the menu varies slightly according to the catch of the day, the signature dishes –including mixed Peruvian ceviche, tuna with serrano chile dressing, and the vegetarian ceviche– are not to be missed. The resort’s flagship restaurant is El Barrio. Inspired by Mexican markets, the space is decorated in bright colors, murals and ceramic tableware. On the menu: Mexican breakfasts, traditional bites, tlayudas and tacos.

NADAR FRENTE AL MAR Aquí, como en gran parte de la península, no se puede nadar en el mar, pero el hotel lo compensa con distintas albercas repartidas por toda la propiedad. El Barrio conduce a la piscina principal de Zadún, formada por dos bloques a desnivel. El primero está rodeado por un deck con tumbonas, hamacas y un puestito de paletas heladas. El segundo se alarga sobre la playa para acercarse al mar. Junto a la barra de cocteles de Equis hay una alberca exclusiva para adultos. Y escondida dentro del spa Alkemia, hay una más, rodeada de palmeras, plantas tropicales y salitas abiertas con sillones para descansar bajo el sol. A su alrededor, el espacio reúne vapor, sauna, jacuzzi, un temazcal y el Savasana Room, para meditaciones y terapias con sonido. Los tratamientos combinan los conocimientos ancestrales con ingredientes naturales de la región. Uno de los favoritos es el Desert Botánica: comienza con la aplicación de compresas empapadas en té de hierbas para relajar los músculos antes del masaje, en el que utilizan aceites de salvia, lavanda y vainilla. Para terminar, aplican una mascarilla facial refrescante de aloe, pepino y caléndula. Durante el día, los huéspedes de Zadún tienen acceso a los tres campos de golf de Puerto Los Cabos, diseño de Greg Norman y Jack Nicklaus, rodeados de dunas de arena y con vistas panorámicas al mar. Además, gracias a una alianza con Ocean Futures Society de Jean-Michel Cousteau, Zadún propone excursiones en tierra y agua guiadas por científicos y naturalistas para conocer la abundante naturaleza de la península.

AN OCEANFRONT SWIM As is the case on much of the peninsula, the ocean does not lend itself to swimming, but the hotel makes up for it with a variety of pools located throughout the property. El Barrio leads to Zadún’s main pool, made up of two uneven blocks. The first is surrounded by a pool deck with lounge chairs, hammocks and a popsicle stand. The second stretches out over the beach, closer to the sea. There’s another adults-only pool next to the Equis cocktail bar. And, hidden inside the Alkemia spa, there is one more, surrounded by palm trees, tropical plants and open spaces with loungers for taking in the sun. Around the pool, you’ll find a steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi, a temascal and the Savasana Room, for meditation and sound therapy. Spa treatments combine ancestral wisdom with natural ingredients from the region. The Desert Botany package is a favorite: it begins with the application of tea-soaked compresses to relax the muscles, then a massage with sage, lavender and vanilla oils, followed by a refreshing aloe, cucumber, and calendula facial mask. During the day, guests at Zadún have access to three Puerto Los Cabos golf courses, designed by Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus; surrounded by sand dunes, they offer panoramic ocean views. And, thanks to a partnership with Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society, Zadún offers shore and water excursions guided by scientists and naturalists who will help you explore the abundant nature of the peninsula.

Este peregrinaje es la forma más básica de entender los elementos que componen un terroir, el cual va más allá de la formación geológica de un viñedo, la cantidad de lluvia que recibe o la manera en la que pega el viento. Está compuesto de gente, sus leyendas y el camino recorrido para crear las regiones vitivinícolas más famosas del mundo. Así nació Mendoza, un sitio donde el vino permea el estilo de cada uno de sus habitantes y donde la uva malbec es protagonista absoluta de cada una de las historias

EL PIONERO La historia no se hace sola y necesita de varios factores que se unan para darle buen cause. Uno de ellos es sin duda Felipe Rutini, inmigrante italiano que fundó en 1885 la Bodega La Rural. Ese mismo año el ferrocarril llegó a la provincia, lo que permitió agilizar el transporte del vino, dando un gran impulso a la joven industria. Hasta ese momento, el comercio se realizaba a través de la venta de barricas, o con botellones de 30 litros llamados damajuanas, que permitían el consumo de vino en casa. En 1933, Rutini cambió el rumbo del vino argentino para siempre cuando introdujo no solo la primera botella de vino con la marca San Felipe, sino también el primer vino argentino con un nombre propio en la etiqueta. Este vino continúa produciéndose en la bodega que data del siglo XIX y que se renovó en los 90 para albergar también el Museo del Vino, que tiene 4,500 piezas originales; una colección única en América Latina curada por el doctor Rodolfo Reina Rutini, nieto de don Felipe. En 1925, Felipe Rutini fue también el primero en plantar vides en el hoy mundialmente famoso Valle de Uco. Al pie de la cordillera de los Andes, goza de particulares condiciones de altura (1,000 a 1,500 metros sobre el nivel del mar) y una variedad de microclimas que permiten obtener uvas de calidad sobresaliente. Los veranos soleados y con escasas lluvias favorecen la maduración, mientras que las bajas temperaturas matutinas y el riego controlado sirven para prolongar el ciclo evolutivo y crear un buen equilibrio. ecclesiastical purposes. It wasn’t until the 18th century, with the arrival of European immigrants from Italy, France and Spain, that the Argentine wine industry was born. They introduced the use of oak to make casks, sugar mills, and barrels and started selling them to local bars called pulperías. THE PIONEER History doesn’t make itself: several factors must come together to set it on the right course. One such influence is undoubtedly Felipe Rutini, an Italian immigrant who founded La Rural Winery in 1885. The railroad reached the province that same year, making it possible to transport wine quickly and giving the young industry a boost. Prior to that, wine was sold by the barrel or in 30-liter demijohns, for consumption at home. In 1933, Rutini changed the course of Argentine wine forever when he introduced the San Felipe brand, the first Argentine wine with its own name on the label. This wine is still made in the same 19th-century winery, which was renovated in the ‘90s to include a new wine museum with a one-of-a-kind 4,500-piece collection curated by Don Felipe’s grandson, Dr. Rodolfo Reina Rutini. Felipe Rutini was also the first to plant vines in the now world-famous Uco Valley, in 1925. At the foot of the Andes, the valley’s altitude (1,000 to 1,500 meters above sea level) and variety of microclimates make for outstanding grapes. Sunny summers with little rain promote ripening, while cool morning temperatures and controlled irrigation serve to prolong the evolutionary cycle and maintain balance. These conditions make Tupungato an ideal place to grow exceptional grapes. In 2008, Rutini built its winery in Tupungato, 80 kilometers from the city of Mendoza. It processes grapes grown at altitudes of 1,050 to 1,200 meters above sea level over a 400-hectare area, creating wines such as Felipe Rutini, Anthology, Apartado, Rutini Collection, Encuentro, and Trumpeter.

El héroe de esta película se llama Mariano Di Paola, uno de los mejores 30 enólogos del mundo, según la revista Decanter. Desde su llegada a la bodega en 1994, los vinos ultrapremium de Rutini Wines no dejan de ganar premios en todo el mundo. Claro ejemplo es el que obtuvieron recientemente por tener uno de los 10 mejores cabernet franc del mundo (Rutini Single Vineyard Gualtallary cabernet Franc 2016), lo que lo vuelve el mejor de Argentina, lo mismo para el Apartado Gran malbec, uno de los 100 mejores vinos del mundo. Se le ve a menudo recorriendo alguno de los tres viñedos –Gualtallary, La Consulta y Altamira–, en largas caminatas, inmerso en pensamientos y analizando las vides a su paso, buscando siempre de qué manera seguir innovando el proceso de vinificación con cada cosecha. Cada uno de sus pasos simboliza no solo el largo camino que ha recorrido la familia Rutini, narra también esas historias que aún les falta contar.

T O M O R R O W C O M E S T O D AY Winemakers are characters who are used to living with one foot in the present and the other in the future; cast in this role at Rutini is Mariano Di Paola, named one of Decanter magazine’s top 30 winemakers in the world. Since he arrived at the winery in 1994, Rutini’s ultra-premium wines have continued winning awards worldwide; its 2016 Rutini Single Vineyard Gualtallary Cabernet Franc was recently named one of the 10 best Cab Francs in the world, making it the best in Argentina, same goes to Apartado Gran Malbec, considered among the 100 best wines in the world. He is often seen making the rounds at one of Rutini’s three vineyards –Gualtallary, La Consulta and Altamira– taking long walks while immersed in thought, analyzing the vines in his path. He is always searching how to improve the winemaking process with every crop. Di Paola was responsible of introducing Rutini to new technologies and to build relationships among other winemakers in order to share knowledge. Each of his steps symbolizes not only the long road traveled by the Rutini family, but also the stories yet to be told. I am sure he still has a lot to offer and many great bottles to be savoured. Either sitting among the vineyards among Valle de Uco, or somewhere else in the world longing for those sunsets that only Mendoza and its super view of the Andes can offer to any visitor who is willing to get to know not only the greatest wines from Argentina, but a piece of the history from its most famous wine region.

Durante años, las armadoras y constructoras navales han trabajado en conjunto para desafiar los límites de la velocidad más allá de las carreteras: en el mar abierto. En cada proyecto, han combinado las nuevas tecnologías, el tratamiento artesanal y el diseño arriesgado para crear iconos de la deportividad. La historia de esta estrecha relación empezó en la década de 1960, en aguas italianas. Ferruccio Lamborghini, el creador de la marca de coches deportivos, era un amante del mar. Su natal Cento, una pequeña localidad al norte de Italia, no tiene costa, pero él la visitaba con frecuencia. En 1968 decidió hacerse de un yate para navegar libremente por el Mediterráneo y eligió el Aquarama que, diseñado por el propio Carlo Riva, era el modelo más exclusivo de la época.

RIVA AQUARAMA LAMBORGHINI LAMBORGHINI Y RIVA El Aquarama original de Riva era casi perfecto; su estructura era ligera, tenía un diseño vanguardista y una distribución perfecta para cinco pasajeros. RIVA AQUARAMA LAMBORGHINI LAMBORGHINI AND RIVA Riva’s original Aquarama was almost perfect: its structure was light, its design was avant-garde, its distribution perfect for five passengers. It had everything except the Lamborghini soul, so Ferruccio ordered the model with a slight modification: replacing the two original engines with two V12s from the 350 GT, the automaker’s first ever sports car. It took them nearly months of work to adapt the new propellers and ensure they exerted the same force on the water as they did on asphalt. Then, with a combined power of 700 CV, the new Riva Aquarama Lamborghini reached a speed of 48 knots (around 56 mph), making it one of the fastest boats in the world to these days. When it accelerated, the sound of the brand new engine was described as a powerful thunderstorm. Ferruccio Lamborghini sailed actively for over 20 years, until he sold the yacht to a close friend in 1988. At the time, the boat was drydocked until 2010, when it was recovered and taken to Riva World, a workshop that specializes in restoring the brand’s historic models. The workshop restored the original wood and upholstery, and installed two new retrofitted 350 GT engines. Three years later, the Riva Aquarama Lamborghini finally returned to the sea. That was the first collaboration between an automotive brand and a nautical one, a coalition that continues to produce creative collaborations, new projects and concept yachts that seek to conquer the open sea.

Each project has combined new technologies, true craftsmanship and bold design to create sporting icons. It all started in the 1960s, in the waters of the Italian coast. Ferruccio Lamborghini, creator of the luxury car brand, loved the sea. Though his native Cento, a small town in northern Italy, is landlocked, he visited the coast often. In 1968 he decided to get his hands on a yacht to sail the Mediterranean, ultimately choosing the Aquarama, designed by Carlo Riva, the most exclusive model of its day.

AM37 ASTON MARTIN Y QUINTESSENCE YACHTS En 2016, tras dos años de trabajo, Aston Martin debutó en la navegación con el AM37, diseñado en colaboración con la constructora holandesa Quintessence Yachts. El alma de Aston Martin se descubre en el rendimiento de los dos modelos, AM37 y AM37S, la versión deportiva. El primero se desplaza a una velocidad de 45 nudos gracias a los motores gemelos Mercury de 370 caballos de fuerza. El segundo, que utiliza un Mercury Racing V-8 de 520 hp, alcanza los 50 nudos sin esfuerzo. AM37 ASTON MARTIN AND QUINTESSENCE YACHTS In 2016, after two years of work, Aston Martin made its sailing debut with the AM37, designed in collaboration with Netherlands-based Quintessence Yachts. The Aston Martin soul is evident in the performance of both yacht models: the AM37, which travels at a speed of 45 knots thanks to twin 370 horsepower Mercury engines, and the AM37S sport, whose 520 hp Mercury Racing V-8 engine lets it reach 50 knots effortlessly. The design, a collaboration between Aston Martin Q Division –the brand’s customization department– and naval architecture studio Mulder Design, also echoes the essence of the sports cars brand. The 11-meter handcrafted yacht boasts an elegant silhouette, with straight lines and precise angles, as well as contrasting materials and tones. On the exterior, a wraparound tempered glass windscreen complements its sportiness. The interior features a wide carbon fiber dash and a leather and polished metal steering wheel emblazoned with the Aston Martin logo.

ARROW 460-GRANTURISMO MERCEDES-BENZ AND SILVER ARROWS MARINE That same year, Mercedes-Benz unveiled its first yacht inspired by Silver Arrows, the iconic race car of the 1930s. For four years, the two companies worked together to conceive the model from scratch, using new materials and technologies to challenge the traditional canons of naval engineering. On its first voyage, the Arrow 460-Granturismo set sail from the marina in Nice, in the south of France, to cruise the Cote d’Azur. With a silhouette similar to that of a sports cars coupe, the yacht’s exterior lines run the length of the 14-meter boat, giving it organic contours. The large windows illuminate the wide interior space, whose loft-inspired aesthetic includes armchairs in white and marine tones, and contrasting wood accents. The heart of the ship is the command center, consisting of two 960-horsepower Yanmar engines that let the motor boat reach speeds of 30 knots. Both were adapted to reduce vibration and noise on the ship, ensuring a comfortable and relaxing travel experience in the open sea.

ARROW 460-GRANTURISMO MERCEDES-BENZ Y SILVER ARROWS MARINE Ese mismo año, Mercedes-Benz presentó su primer yate inspirado en Silver Arrows, el icónico auto de carreras de la década de 1930. Durante cuatro años, ambas compañías trabajaron juntas para idear desde cero un modelo con nuevos materiales y tecnologías que desafiara los cánones tradicionales de la ingeniería naval. En su primer viaje, el Arrow 460-Granturismo partió de Niza, al sur de Francia, para navegar por la costa Azul. El diseño del yate, que recuerda la silueta de un coupé deportivo, exhibe líneas exteriores que recorren los 14 metros de largo de la embarcación, y la dota de formas orgánicas. Las ventanas iluminan el interior inspirado en la estética de un loft, con sillones en tonos blancos y marinos, y acentos en madera para contrastar. GTT 115 PORSCHE Y DYNAMIQ YACHTS The first yacht with Porsche DNA was launched in September 2017, a collaboration between the German automaker and Italian manufacturer Dynamiq Yachts. The result was an exclusive series of seven models that combine power, range and sportiness. With a hybrid system comprising two turbodiesel engines, two rear propellers and two electric motors for maneuvering, the GTT 115 ventured into the sustainable future of sailing. The yacht’s design, a product of the Studio F.A. Porsche creative agency, adopted some of the brand’s exclusive elements, including side reinforcements reminiscent of the Porsche 911 Targa. Design supports performance: the aluminum frame is surprisingly light, while the avant-garde bow shape maximizes the waterline length, allowing it to reach higher speeds. Also, the glass used in the panoramic windows allows maximum light transmission to the interior space, while blocking harmful UV rays, and keeping the temperature-controlled, significantly reducing energy use.

LEXUS LY 650 LEXUS Y MARQUIS YACHTS La última armadora en llegar al mar abierto fue Lexus, en otoño de 2019. El diseño del Lexus LY 650 se basó en el primer experimento de la marca: el Lexus Sport Yacht Concept, de 2017, con una serie de adaptaciones para asegurar su funcionalidad y rendimiento. El yate se fabricó en colaboración con los artesanos de Marquis-Larson Boat Group; tiene dos motores gemelos Volvo Penta con potencia de 1,000 caballos de fuerza y un casco ligero de plástico reforzado con fibra de vidrio y de carbono. Frente al asiento del capitán, un panel táctil con tecnología de conectividad avanzada monitorea la ubicación y el funcionamiento de la embarcación. Diseñado en colaboración con el estudio Nuvolari Lenard, el Lexus LY 650 exhibe una proa amplia y pronunciada y un techo tipo coupé. LEXUS LY 650 LEXUS AND MARQUIS YACHTS Lexus is the latest automaker to reach the sea, in the autumn of 2019. The new Lexus LY 650 was based on the brand’s first experiment, the Lexus Sport Yacht Concept, with certain adaptations to ensure its functionality and performance. Built in collaboration with the craftsmen of the Marquis-Larson Boat Group, the sports yacht has two twin Volvo Penta engines rated at 1,000 horsepower and a lightweight hull made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic and glass fiber-reinforced plastic. In front of the captain’s seat, a touchscreen with advanced connectivity technology monitors the location and operation of the boat at all times. Designed in collaboration with Italian Nuvolari Lenard studio, the Lexus LY 650 features a wide, pronounced bow and coupe-like roof. With three private cabins and a common room, the interior is inspired by the omotenashi concept of Japanese hospitality, featuring wide open spaces, large windows, organic shapes and light neutral tones to give a feeling of cleanliness and spaciousness.

todos vivimos de las apariencias, de cómo nos ven los demás. Con nuestro rostro pasa lo mismo, ahí esta todo, en las expresiones. Lo más difícil es ver a la persona tal como es. Por eso, mi intención es lograr retratos sin artificios, sencillos. Muchas veces pueden ser visceralmente realistas y eso no siempre gusta. Para mí un buen retrato es cuando el otro se siente cómodo con su imagen, se ve en sí mismo. Así he retratado a escritores, cineastas y músicos. Es imposible leer todo antes de la sesión, la vida no nos alcanza. A algunos los he leído y a otros los leo de forma diagonal. Entonces, tengo dos métodos infalibles: buscar los rostros en San Google y leer entrevistas. A veces, por una respuesta puede intuirse qué clase de persona es a la que nos acercamos. Hablo poco cuando estoy en una sesión; es como un trance: nunca se qué decir, prefiero el silencio. Antes hacía pequeños bocetos, pero luego todo cambia y muchas veces hay que improvisar. Sobre todo cuando tienes poco tiempo, por ejemplo en las ruedas de prensa, ferias literarias o en las presentaciones de libros. Tomo muchos de mis retratos en esas circunstancias, son un ejercicio y por eso siempre los llamo “apuntes para un retrato”.

we all live on appearances, on how we are perceived by others. The same goes for our faces, it’s all in the expressions. The most difficult thing is to see someone just as they are. So I aim to create portraits that are simple, without artifice. Oftentimes they can be viscerally realistic and not always pleasing. For me a good portrait is one in which the person is comfortable with the image, when they see themselves in it. That’s been my approach to photographing writers, filmmakers and musicians. It’s impossible to read everything before the session, a lifetime is not enough. Some I have read, and others I read diagonally. So, I have two foolproof methods: I search their faces on Saint Google, and I read interviews. Sometimes, their responses hint at the kind of person we’re dealing with. I don’t say much when I’m in a session; it’s like a trance: I never know what to say, so I prefer silence. I used to make little sketches, but then everything changes and often you have to improvise. Especially when you don’t have much time, like at press conferences, book fairs, or readings. Many of my portraits are made under these circumstances; they are an exercise, and that’s why I always call them “notes for a portrait”.

EN PRIMERA PERSONA Nací en Caracas y me inicié en la fotografía de la mano de Nelson Garrido, fotógrafo y artista venezolano. Con él aprendí el oficio que me ha acompañado 30 años. Soy autodidacta de profesión, no estudié fotografía y solo terminé el bachiller. Era muy jovencita: primero quería ser pintora y luego poeta, hice algunos pinitos con la pintura, empecé a estudiar en una escuela de Artes Plásticas en Caracas, hice varios talleres de poesía y después otros de periodismo literario para darle forma a mi trabajo. Nunca fui buena estudiante, no me gustaba la escuela. Era hija única (tuve un hermano ya cuando tenía 14 años) y como no jugaba con otros niños, me devoraba todo libro que caía en mis manos. Tenía un vecino que me introdujo a la literatura, y con 14 ya había leído todo Herman Hesse. Mi vecino murió y heredé algunos de sus libros. Me leí La montaña mágica, con 17 años, y Doktor Faustus, que eran suyos. Y así, no salía de mi cuarto… un poco como ahora, solo que el mundo está afuera y hay que vivir. He invertido tantas horas de mi vida acostada en la cama (me vienen a la cabeza las fotos de Juan Carlos Onetti acostado, parece que vivía en su cama) sentada en un sofá, meciéndome en una hamaca o ahora pegada a una pantalla leyendo lo que nos depara el mundo. Llegué a Barcelona porque tenía una pena de amor y quería cambiar de aire. Tenía 28 años y una carrera pequeñita en Venezuela. Un oficio te facilita las cosas cuando sales de tu país con la intención de continuar con lo que haces. Estaba aplicando para una residencia en un centro de Arte Contemporáneo y Producción Artística llamado HANGAR. Allí obtuve una residencia

IN THE FIRST PERSON I was born in Caracas and started out under the guiding hand of Nelson Garrido, a Venezuelan photographer and artist. He taught me the craft that I’ve now been practicing for 30 years. I am officially self-taught, I didn’t study photography formally and I only finished high school. I was very young: first I wanted to be a painter and then a poet. I dabbled a bit, studying at a visual arts school in Caracas, and I attended a number of workshops in poetry and literary journalism to give shape to my work. I was never a very good student, I didn’t like school. I was an only child (my little brother was born when I was 14), and since I didn’t play with other children, I devoured every book that fell into my hands. A neighbor introduced me to literature and by 14 I had already read all of Herman Hesse. When my neighbor died, I inherited some of his books, including Doktor Faustus and The Magic Mountain, which I read when I was 17. I rarely left my room... a bit like now, except the world is out there and you have to go live in it. I’ve invested so many hours of my life lying in bed (I can’t help but think of those photos of Juan Carlos Onetti lying in his bed, it seemed like he lived there), sitting on the couch, rocking in a hammock and, now, glued to a screen, reading what the world has to offer. I came to Barcelona after a heartbreak, because I needed a change of scenery. I was 28 and had a budding career in Venezuela. Having a craft makes it easier to leave your country with the intention of continuing your work elsewhere. I had applied for a year-long

de 12 meses: era la oportunidad de tomarme un año sabático y poder dedicarme a mi trabajo personal. Así, paralelamente en temas literarios, me inicié en la foto fija para cine y televisión. Entre algunas películas, he hecho A la media noche y media de Mariana Rondón y Merité Úgas, en Venezuela; en España, El orfanato de J. A. Bayona y La librería de Isabel Coixet, y recientemente La línea invisible, de Mariano Barroso, una serie para Movistar sobre los comienzos de ETA. A mi llegada a Barcelona compré todas las revistas que se publicaban en España y en las que podía encajar mis temas. Llamé a todas para ofrecerles contenido. Algunas no contestaron y con otras aún estoy vinculada; por ejemplo, el suplemento cultural del diario La Vanguardia, donde publiqué mis primeros fotoensayos sobre casas museos de artistas y escritores. También llamé a las editoriales para ofrecer mis retratos. Anagrama, fundada por Jorge Herralde, fue la primera en acogerme. Ahí estaban publicados muchos de mis ídolos: Patricia Highsmith, Raymond Carver, Fitzgerald, Georges Perec, Alfredo Bryce Echenique, Antonio Tabucchi, Nabokov, etcétera. Yo llevaba debajo del brazo retratos de Carlos Monsiváis, Alejandro Rossi y Roberto Bolaño, a quien recientemente había retratado en Caracas por el premio Rómulo Gallegos en 1999. Ya en Barcelona y Madrid retraté a otros escritores como Paul Auster, Hanif Kureishi, Martin Amis, Alessandro Baricco, Richard Ford, Héctor Abad Faciolince, Rosa Montero, John Banville, Amélie Nothomb, entre otros, y así mis retratos empezaron a formar parte de las solapas de Anagrama y Alfaguara. ANOTACIONES EN CUADERNOS Tengo cuadernos en los que copio fragmentos de novelas y poemas. Transcribir, copiar y tomar notas me da orden. Tengo otras libretas en las que escribo todo tipo de recuerdos, llevo lo que llaman un anecdotario, mis cuadernos de trabajo donde voy apuntando algunas experiencias, encuentros, apuntes de lecturas, notas… Por ejemplo, esta de México con Álvaro Mutis y su esposa Carmen Miracle Feliú: habíamos terminado la sesión y Doña Carmen me invitó a hacer un aperitivo. Fue a la cocina a buscar los vasos y yo me quedé sola con Mutis. Él había perdido el habla, pero a través de gestos nos habíamos entendido perfectamente: nos sentamos de frente y él se me quedó mirando fijamente. Pude ver sus ojos tan cristalinos que sentí miedo; él se puso a temblar y dar pequeños saltos, como si estuviera convulsionando. Me asusté tanto que me fui en llanto, no sabía qué hacer, lo único que alcancé a decirle fue: “Maestro, no me hagas esto por favor”. Se dio cuenta de que entré en pánico, y se puso a reír a carcajadas, le entró un ataque de risa, estaba fingiendo un infarto. Todo era una broma. Cuando Doña Carmen volvió, me vio tan asustada que me consoló diciéndome: “Álvaro siempre ha sido un bromista.” Nos servimos whisky hasta que nos terminamos la botella.

I started doing still photography for film and television. Some of the films I worked on included At Midnight and a Half by Mariana Rondón and Merité Úgas, in Venezuela; in Spain, The Orphanage by J. A. Bayona and The Bookshop by Isabel Coixet, and, recently, The Invisible Line by Mariano Barroso, a series for Movistar about the origins of ETA. When I arrived in Barcelona, I bought all the Spanish magazines I could find that might publish my work. I called them all to offer my content. Some never responded, but others I still work with; for example, the cultural supplement of the La Vanguardia newspaper, where I published my first photo-essays about the house museums of artists and writers. I also called publishing houses to offer my portraits. Anagrama, founded by Jorge Herralde, was the first to welcome me. Many of my idols were published there: Patricia Highsmith, Raymond Carver, Fitzgerald, Georges Perec, Alfredo Bryce Echenique, Antonio Tabucchi, Nabokov, etc. I had portraits of Carlos Monsiváis, Alejandro Rossi and Roberto Bolaño under my arm, having recently shot them in Caracas for the Rómulo Gallegos Prize in 1999. In Barcelona and Madrid I photographed writers such as Paul Auster, Hanif Kureishi, Martin Amis, Alessandro Baricco, Richard Ford, Héctor Abad Faciolince, Rosa Montero, John Banville and Amélie Nothomb, among others, and thus my portraits began appearing on the dust jackets of books published by Anagrama and Alfaguara. NOTES IN NOTEBOOKS I have notebooks into which I copy fragments of novels and poems. I have other notebooks in which I write all kinds of memories. I carry what’s called an anecdotario, where I jot down certain anecdotes, experiences, meetings, notes from my readings, etc... For example, this one from Mexico with Álvaro Mutis and his wife, Carmen Miracle Feliú: We had finished the session and Doña Carmen invited me to stay for an aperitif. She went to the kitchen to get the glasses, and I was left alone with Mutis. He had lost his ability to speak, but through gestures we understood each other perfectly: we sat facing each other and he stared at me. His eyes were so clear they almost scared me; he started to tremble and jerk, as if he were convulsing. I was so frightened that I broke into tears, I didn’t know what to do, the only thing I managed to say was: “Maestro, please don’t do this to me.” He realized that I was panicking, and he started roaring with laughter, uncontrollably –he’d been faking a heart attack. It was all a joke. When Doña Carmen returned, she saw the petrified look on my face and consoled me by saying, “Álvaro has always been a joker.” We served ourselves one whiskey after another until the bottle was empty.

En vuelos de ida y vuelta o con conexión, no se le negará el uso de los segmentos subsecuentes por no haber utilizado uno de los segmentos anteriores (siempre y cuando avise a la aerolínea dentro de las 24 horas posteriores a la hora programada del segmento no utilizado). Retraso. En caso de retraso imputable a la aerolínea, aplicarán las políticas de compensación establecidas por la misma.*

Pago de indemnizaciones. Se realizarán dentro de los 10 días naturales siguientes a la reclamación, a excepción de alimentos y hospedaje. Módulos de atención. Las aerolíneas tendrán un módulo de atención en las terminales donde operen. Sobreventa. La Radio a Galena o Radio Cristal, como se le conoce en los países anglosajones, fue el primer aparato receptor de la historia. En 1910, Henry H.C. Dunwoody y Greenleaf Whittier Pickard inventaron este aparato que detectaba señales en las ondas cortas y medianas de la Amplitud Modulada (AM). En el periodo en el que las tensiones entre Nikola Tesla y Guglielmo Marconi se avivaban en torno a la patente del descubrimiento e invención de las ondas radiales –por las que se le dio a Marconi el Premio Nobel de Física en 1909–, los científicos estadounidenses lograron capturar las señales en un dispositivo rústico y sin baterías fácil de elaborar: receptor, sintonizador y audífonos. Como funcionaba como antena, bastaba con un cable de cobre enrollado a un cilindro aislante que servía como detector, y audífonos para traducir los sonidos. The crystal radio was the first receiving apparatus in history. In 1910, Henry H.C. Dunwoody and Greenleaf Whittier Pickard invented the device, which detected short- and medium-wave amplitude modulated (AM) signals. As tensions between Nikola Tesla and Guglielmo Marconi were being revived over rights to the patent for the discovery and invention of radio waves (for which Marconi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1909), American scientists managed to pick up signals on a rustic, battery-free device that was easy to make: just a receiver, tuner, and headphones. All they needed was an antenna made from insulated copper wire coiled to an insulating cylinder, which worked as a detector, and headphones to translate the sounds. This practical device helped to democratize radio, and a decade after it was invented, the first broadcasts specifically designed for entertainment took place.

As a prototype of what would come to be known as television, and as a way to transmit information by reading newspapers over the air, radio was a very important technological advance. Between 1920 and 1930, almost every American home had a transistor radio. Families gathered around it to listen to news and entertainment programs. Networks such as NBC, CBS and ABC, all born in the late 1920s, focused on news, politics and human interest topics. The medium was considered so prestigious and credible that on October 30, 1938, Orson Welles pulled a stunt that would set American listeners on their heads. Broadcasting from New York, he read a passage from H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds and sent thousands of people into a panic that the planet was literally being invaded by aliens. As World War II enveloped Europe, radio became one of the most important communication systems in history. Though cinemas showed newsreels of what was happening on the front, radio’s immediacy gave it an advantage. Entire families could learn what was happening on the other side of the world, almost in real time. Meanwhile, the Axis powers and the Allies fought a propaganda war to influence their adversaries’ disposition. This decade also saw the discovery of frequency modulation (fm), which vastly improved the radio system. In 1948, John Bardeen, Walter Brattain and William Shockley –three engineers from the Bell company, one of the first telecommunications firms– found a way to make transistors that could modulate the signals and include them in a very high-frequency band; this innovation earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1956. Thanks to them, transistor radios became considerably smaller.

By this decade, radio technology and its impact on society had almost reached their peak. There were some 12,000 radio stations around the world broadcasting propaganda, advertising and entertainment. Political messages were reaching the public en masse; the Cold War between the United States and the USSR found another front on the airwaves. Radio dramas found a huge audience, and different stations played different genres of music. Advertisers took advantage of this to market their products, and so did civil society, which saw an ideological link between the music being played and the so-called “counterculture.” This decade also saw the perfection of wireless transistor technology. All these elements combined to make radio the most democratic means of communication. But TV was gaining ground.

En esta década, convulsa tras el fin de la Guerra Fría y un despertar social importante, la cultura popular tomó un papel más que importante en las sociedades. Particularmente, la música y la moda tuvieron un auge desde los 70 y más aún en lo 80, gracias a los videos musicales y clips que se transmitían en MTV. Pero aunque la televisión era el escaparate de bandas y músicos como Queen, Michael Jackson y Madonna, invariablemente uno debía volver al radio receptor para escucharlos. Por otro lado, en esta década el casette encontró su lugar. La cinta, que había sustituido a los discos de revoluciones, era complemento ideal para los radios inalámbricos. Por su tamaño compacto y la posibilidad de reproducirlo en aparatos como el boombox, la música llegó al espacio público y una vez ahí fue la gente la que decidió cómo, qué y dónde reproduciría su música. Coming off the turbulence of the Cold War and a major social awakening, this decade saw popular culture take on an increasingly important role in society. Music and fashion in particular boomed in the 1970s and 1980s, thanks to videos broadcast on MTV. But even as acts like Queen, Michael Jackson, and Madonna were showcased on television, one invariably had to go back to the radio to listen to them. The cassette tape also came into its own in the ‘80s. Having replaced LPs, the cassette tape was an ideal match for wireless radios. Compact enough to be played on portable devices such as the boombox, music reached the public square, allowing people to decide what they wanted to hear, as well as how and where they would play it. The boombox had been around for several years, but in this peaceful post-war period, it became an icon in the breakdancing scene among Black and Latino kids in the United States.

Despite warnings from academics who were certain radio wouldn’t survive competition from TV, radio did not disappear but was reinvented in the new millennium. No longer just a complement or alternative to screens, now it was being incorporated into other devices. Beginning in the ‘80s and ‘90s, radios expanded to include other functions, like alarm clocks and tape decks, and now they were also being adapted to charge cell phone batteries and play MP3s. Communications experts once again reflected on the role of radio in the face of a new democratic technology called the internet, and again they raised the spectre of the medium’s demise, despite the fact that radio had already been adapted to any imagined need, from car stereos to the Discman to the Walkman and even built into headphones.

in his new book, Medio siglo con Borges (Half a Century with Borges), Mario Vargas Llosa compiles essays, interviews and conferences that he conducted about his Argentine counterpart. The first time Mario Vargas Llosa interviewed Jorge Luis Borges was in Paris in 1963, when the world was just discovering the Buenos Aires-born writer, though he was already being praised in France. The Peruvian writer had a show on Parisian radio at the time, and the Argentine had just taken his work international. Though Borges had studied in Geneva and had been confined during World War I, this was the first time he’d left Buenos Aires to promote his work in Europe. They were both making their way. “I was very afraid of that interview because I was a great admirer of Borges”, Vargas Llosa said recently in an interview with journalist Leila Guerriero. This is just one of the memories detailed in Vargas Llosa’s new book, published by Alfaguara, about the author of The Aleph. “Borges is a very alive author, and absolutely borderless; he is read everywhere and has many admirers,” said the Nobel Prize winner of Borges, who died in 1986.
