¿Es la belleza algo antiguo?

Más allá de cualquier consideración teórica o constructiva, cuando pensamos en la fotografía pictorialista pensamos en la belleza. El que la imagen sea una construcción más falsa que un bolso Vuitton vendido en China no nos afecta, ni tampoco nos paramos a considerar que la luz no es natural, que la idea está basada en una escena por lo general sacada de la tradición pictórica (de ahí lo de pictorialista), ni mucho menos en que esta práctica atenta (tal vez habría que decir atentaba) contra los principios fundamentales del nacimiento de la fotografía. Nos gusta su belleza, esos cuerpos de mujeres blancas como cadáveres, lánguidas, realmente a punto de expirar. Nos encantan esos paisajes ya prácticamente imposibles. Nos resulta irresistible, finalmente, asomarnos a un mundo diferente al que habitamos, en el que no parece haber los problemas que vivimos a este otro lado de la realidad, en el que todo está pensado para resultarnos agradable.

Todo lo contrario que en la fotografía actual, tan preocupada por transmitirnos ideas, conceptos, situaciones que nos llevan inevitablemente a cuestionarnos todo tipo de asuntos y, por supuesto, a responsabilizarnos de ellos.

Tan obsesionada con la no-belleza, con ofrecernos la parte cruel, vulgar, fea, de la realidad, tal vez la realidad misma y, sin duda alguna, de nosotros mismos. No, en la fotografía pictorialista nada de esto es así, la belleza, el orden, lo estático, prima sobre cualquier otra apreciación.

Es decir, triunfa la falsedad.

Pero, ¿cómo asociamos falsedad y belleza? Tal vez porque todo lo bello tiene algo irremediablemente falso, sobre

todo en el momento actual en el que la belleza parece ser una fórmula de laboratorio. La apariencia, siempre lo hemos sabido, no deja de ser una puesta en escena individualizada para una teatralización global de la existencia. En cualquier caso, seamos felices e inconscientes durante un rato y recreémonos en imágenes esencialmente bellas. No se preocupen, no tiene efectos secundarios.

La belleza parece expulsada del mundo del arte actual, decir de una obra de arte que es hermosa, bella, bonita, son hoy en día más descalificaciones que argumentos positivos. Y, sí, parece que todo lo bello sea anacrónico, es decir: de otra época pasada, antigua. ¿Será la belleza algo antiguo? Realmente lo que la idea de belleza contiene ha cambiado mucho en poco tiempo, tal vez demasiado rápido, mucho más que nuestros propios gustos realmente, pues si no, es difícil entender que una corriente como el Pictorialismo fotográfico perviva más allá de 1920, fecha en la que este movimiento llega a su declive y práctica desaparición. Sin embargo hay que recordar aquí, aunque en los siguientes textos se explica detalladamente, que el Pictorialismo fotográfico se inicia en torno a 1880 y significa la auténtica vanguardia del momento, sacudiendo los cimientos del orden establecido dentro de las artes visuales. El sueño de estos fotógrafos victorianos era que la fotografía fuese aceptada como una forma seria de arte, al mismo nivel que otras prácticas existentes. Es duro ver que hoy en día sus seguidores pueden ser tachados de antiguos y de ir en contra de la auto-

nomía de la fotografía. Porque es cierto que aquellos que fuera de tiempo se empeñan en seguir corrientes vanguardistas que ya están claramente en decadencia, pueden llegar a ser simples pastiches, patéticas imitaciones de ellos mismos, y sin duda eso pasó a finales de la década de 1970, cuando proliferan los peores seguidores del Pictorialismo. Sin embargo, hoy en día y paralelamente con cualquier otra línea creativa, vivimos un recalentamiento pictorialista. Son cada vez más los artistas jóvenes que se inclinan por esta tipología fotográfica, a despecho de modas y tal vez aupados por un mercado que sabe valorar y colocar rápidamente aquellos productos que mantienen elementos tradicionales y por ello más fácilmente aceptables por una burguesía acomodada. Y no se trata solamente de la reconceptualización del tableau vivant desde Jeff Wall hasta los miles de jóvenes fotógrafos que se empeñan en la construcción de inverosímiles puestas en escena, sino de la recuperación de un cierto tipo de belleza que sigue viva entre nosotros. Se trata de la reconsideración del cuerpo, de una visión todavía complaciente del paisaje, de una sofisticación de los interiores, intentando que lo vulgar pueda estar cargado de sensualidad y placer, que lo extraño sea atrayente, misterioso. Una reconstrucción de unas imágenes hechas para disfrutar, para ser contempladas con ensimismamiento, por el simple hecho de la búsqueda del placer.

Un tema de reflexión que podemos desarrollar a partir de la contemplación de estas imágenes pictorialistas es la hibridación que desde que surge la fotografía viene teniendo lugar en el mundo de las artes visuales: la pintura influye en la fotografía, el diseño y la moda influyen en la fotografía, la pintura y la fotografía influyen en el cine, el cine influye en la fotografía, la fotografía influye en la pintura, el cine influye en la pintura,… y entonces nace el vídeo. Es en el Pictorialismo cuando más claramente se ve el origen de esa idea de que todo vale como origen, como semilla, como punto de arranque. Algo que ha sido esencial para la evolución del arte hoy en día y que sin embargo descalifica a muchos de los que lo practican, como fue el caso del Pictorialismo en concreto.

Es obvio decir, y en las siguientes imágenes se puede ver claramente, que los pictorialistas del siglo XXI no son

iguales a los del XIX, sin duda son mucho más arriesgados, más exuberantes y también más misteriosos pues sus claves de referencia son mucho más variadas, les influye una cinematografía que no existía entonces; una literatura mucho más elaborada; y tienen una capacidad técnica infinitamente más depurada y, posiblemente, un gusto más trabajado. También una perversidad mucho más agudizada. Son artistas que han iniciado su trabajo en momentos en los que la fotografía ya es indudablemente una forma artística más, sin complejos, se han encontrado con un mercado real que antes ni se podía soñar. En esta situación ellos se deciden a mirar hacia atrás o, al menos, mirar hacia otro lado. Y es el cuerpo el que más atrae esa mirada, el cuerpo dentro de unos baremos de belleza y autocomplacencia que se extrañan en cualquier otro lenguaje plástico de la actualidad; se empapan en la contemplación de lo aparentemente insignificante, en escenas imposibles, en escenarios extraños, dejan pasar el tiempo ante su mirada mientras contemplan el río fluir delante de ellos. En definitiva no parecen vivir en el mismo tiempo ni el mismo lugar que los fotógrafos que normalmente llenan estas y otras páginas de las publicaciones de arte actual. Y entonces nos damos cuenta de que un desnudo de una mujer, con clara similitud a los renacentistas de última época nos parece obsceno, en una sociedad en la que el sexo y el desnudo están en todas partes, esta mujer que en su soledad se tumba desnuda nos produce una sensación inaudita de incomodidad. Ya no se trata del desnudo exquisito, lánguido y carente de morbo, sino del desnudo real, del cuerpo de verdad. Esa otra forma de mirar la intimidad, la soledad, la belleza, la construcción de espacios para el placer más lento, alimenta esta fotografía que puede perder el tiempo porque se desarrolla fuera de él de una manera absoluta e irreversible para siempre. La diferencia entre estos y aquellos pictorialistas estriba en que aquellos se consideraban unos vanguardistas, innovadores y transgresores, mientras los de hoy son unos esteticistas un tanto anacrónicos y que buscan en territorios que no interesan a los más radicales. Tal vez lo que mantengan en común sea que los dos, de ayer y de hoy, están mal vistos por la crítica y los modelos establecidos, por esa Academia que en cada época define las normas.

Beyond any theoretical or constructive consideration, when we think of pictorial photography we think of beauty. The fact that the picture is a faker construction than a Vuitton handbag sold in China does not affect us, nor do we stop to consider that the light is unnatural, the idea is usually based on a scene borrowed from pictorial tradition (and therefore Pictorialist), and still less that this practice is (though it may be more fitting to say was) an offence against the fundamental principles of the birth of photography. We like its beauty, those white women’s cadaverous languid, bodies, actually about to expire. We love those now virtually impossible landscapes. After all, we find it irresistible to get a glimpse of a world different from that in which we live, one that appears to be free of the problems we experience on this other side of reality, one in which everything is designed to seem pleasant to us. Quite the opposite of contemporary photography, which is so concerned with transmitting ideas, concepts, situations that inevitably lead us to question all sorts of issues and, of course, to take responsibility for them; so obsessed with non-beauty, with offering us the cruel, vulgar, ugly part of reality, perhaps even reality itself and without a doubt, part of ourselves. No, in pictorial photography none of this is so. Beauty, order, stillness takes precedence over any other quality. That is, falsehood triumphs.

But, how do we associate falsehood and beauty?

Maybe this is because every beautiful thing entails E X I T NÂş 30-2008 20

something irremediably false, especially these days when beauty seems to be a laboratory formula. Appearance, as we have always known, does not cease to be an individualised staging for a global dramatisation of existence. In any case, let us be happy and oblivious for a little while and delight in essentially beautiful pictures.

Not to worry, there are no side effects.

It seems as though beauty has been expelled from the world of contemporary art. Today, to say of a work of art that it is lovely, beautiful or pretty, is to denigrate it rather than to commend it. And if everything beautiful seems anachronistic, that is: of another era, old-fashioned, then, is beauty old-fashioned? What the idea of beauty actually contains has changed a lot in a short time, perhaps too quickly, much more than our own tastes, to be sure, for otherwise it would be hard to understand how a trend such as photographic Pictorialism could have survived beyond 1920, when this movement fell into decline and virtually disappeared.

However, it must be remembered here, though the following essays explain in more detail, that pictorial photography came into being around 1880 and it was the authentic avant-garde of the time, shaking the very foundations of the visual arts establishment. The dream of those Victorian photographers was that photography would be accepted as a serious art form, on the same level as other existing practices. It is hard to see how its followers can now be slated as old-fashioned and

working against photography’s autonomy. It is true that those who are bent on untimely pursuits of once avantgarde trends that are clearly in decline can become simple pastiches, pathetic imitations of themselves, and this undoubtedly happened in the late 1970s, when the worst practitioners of Pictorialism proliferated.

Nevertheless, we are currently witnessing a pictorial reheating. Ever more young artists are inclined to take up this type of photography, in spite of fashions and quite possibly bolstered by a market that knows how to place value on and exploit those products that maintain traditional elements, and are thus more easily accepted by the well-off bourgeoisie. And it is not just a matter of the reconceptualisation of the tableau vivant by artists ranging from Jeff Wall to thousands of young photographers who insist on constructing unlikely settings, but also the recovery of a certain type of beauty still alive among us. It is a matter of a reconsideration of the body, a still complacent vision of landscape, a sophistication of interiors in an effort to imbue the commonplace with sensuality and pleasure, to make the strange attractive and mysterious. A reconstruction of some pictures made to be enjoyed, to be contemplated with self-absorption, merely for the sake of pleasure-seeking.

One theme for reflection that we can develop when contemplating these Pictorialist pictures is the hybridisation that, since the emergence of photography, has been taking place in the world of visual arts: painting influences photography, design and fashion influence photography, painting and photography influence film, film influences photography, photography influences painting, film influences painting,‌ and then video was born. The origin of the idea that everything works as a source, as a seed, as a starting point can be seen clearly in Pictorialism. This is something that has been essential for the current evolution of art and that nevertheless disqualifies many of those who practice it, as was the particular case of Pictorialism.

It goes without saying, and in the following pictures it is plain to see, that the 21st century Pictorialists are not the same as those of the 19th century. They are certainly much more daring, more exuberant and also more

mysterious, for their frames of reference are much more varied. They are influenced by cinema that did not exist then, as well as much more elaborate literature, and they have exceedingly more refined technical expertise and, possibly, a more versed taste. Also a much more sharpened perverseness. They are artists who have begun their careers at a time when photography is undoubtedly another art form, one free of complexes.

They have found a real market that could not even be dreamt of before. In this situation they decide to look backwards or, at least, to look another way. And it is the body that most attracts that gaze, the body within certain canons of beauty and self-complacence that are surprising in any other contemporary art media; they are steeped in the contemplation of the apparently insignificant, in impossible scenes, in strange settings.

They let time pass before their eyes while they contemplate the river flowing before them.

In conclusion, they do not seem to be living at the same time or in the same place as the photographers that usually fill these and other pages of publications on contemporary art. And then we realise that a female nude, clearly resembling those of the late Renaissance, looks obscene to us, in a society in which sex and nudity is everywhere, this women, who in her solitude lies down naked, leaves us with a bizarre sensation of discomfort. And it is not the exquisite, languid nude lacking in morbid fascination, but the real nude, the real body. That way of looking at intimacy, solitude, beauty, the construction of spaces for the slowest pleasure, gives rise to this photography that can lose track of time because it is developed outside it in an everlastingly absolute and irreversible way. The difference between the historical Pictorialists and the modern-day Pictorialists lies in the fact that the former were considered avant-garde, innovative and groundbreaking, whereas the latter are somewhat anachronistic aestheticists exploring territories that do not interest the more radical creators. It may be that what they have in common is that both those of yesterday and today are viewed as unworthy by the critics and the established models, by the school that every age defines as model.

Nihonga

Nihon (Japón) y ga (pintura) se combinan para formar Nihonga, o Pintura japonesa, un estilo que se remonta miles de años atrás. Tradicionalmente estas imágenes se realizaban utilizando cola animal, pan de oro y pigmentos naturales. Las imágenes de esta serie son fotografías orgánicas de imágenes "reales" que han sido recompuestas juntas para producir el resultado deseado.

Como fotógrafo, mi trabajo está influido de modo subconsciente por el sentido japonés de la belleza. Este sentido de la belleza puede encontrarse en lo que se denomina Wabi-sabi, refieriéndose a la belleza de lo imperfecto y a la elegancia sutil. Además, esta belleza se expresa también en el Ma, el uso del espacio negativo, que se encuentra en el arte de la caligrafía así como en el diseño de un jardín tradicional de rocas.

Mi creatividad y mi trabajo como fotógrafo profesional están influídos de modo inconsciente por estas antiguas tradiciones de Japón. En Nihonga, estas influencias han sido expresadas como un elemento consciente.

Mi obra ha sido a veces remitida a la tradición del Pictorialismo. Mientras que para algunos esto es un insulto, yo no lo considero así. Nihon (Japan) and ga (painting) combine to form Nihonga, or Japanese painting, a style which dates back over a thousand years. Traditionally such images were made using animal glue, gold leaf, and natural pigments. The images you are looking at are all organically photographed "real" pictures that have been recomposited together to produce the desired result.

As a photographer my work is subconsciously influenced by the Japanese sense of beauty. This sense of beauty can be found in Wabi-sabi, referring to the beauty of imperfection and understated elegance.

Additionally this beauty is also expressed in Ma, the use of negative space, found in the art of calligraphy, as well as in the design of a traditional rock garden.

My creativity and work as a professional photographer are unconsciously influenced by these old traditions of Japan. In Nihonga, these influences have been expressed as a conscious element in the work.

My work has sometimes been referenced to the tradition of Pictorialism. While to some this is an insult, I do not regard it so. When photography was in its infancy, it looked up to and borrowed heavily from the painting traditions. However, in modern figurative painting and more recent art practice, artists such as Edgar Degas, Andy Warhol and Chuck Close have used photography as a central tool in their work and expression, from foreshortening to wide angles, often using photography to reveal things the human eye can't even detect, and then incorporating it into their work.

So in effect the two arts now borrow and learn from each other. My idea was to see how far modern photography could express some of these traditional ideas using the technology and tools available today.

Using today’s tools, Broncolor speed strobes, Photoshop, and the latest cameras, a photographer can express the vision that originally only an artist like Hokusai or Hiroshige could see in their mind.

Natural History

F. Holland Day: Suffering the Ideal fue el libro que me introdujo por primera vez en ese etéreo y demasiado breve movimiento artístico y fotográfico conocido como Pictorialismo.

Así comenzó mi búsqueda de otras imágenes y creadores de imágenes de este movimiento artístico y del de la PhotoSecession en Estados Unidos. Clarence White, Gertrude Kasebier, Alvin Langdon Coburn, George Seeley, Anne Brigman –entonces de repente el fondo de imágenes empieza a disminuir dejando una necesidad de más.

Como artista, creo que cuando descubres un movimiento artístico que se comunica profundamente con tu alma deseas involucrarte en él. ¡Incluso si llegas cien años más tarde para unirte a él! Pero, piensas, ¿qué podría haber aportado a este movimento?

Mientras desarrollaba el concepto para mi serie de fotografías sobre historia natural, combiné dos disciplinas dispares como fundamento de la serie: las ilustraciones de historia natural y el pictorialismo fotográfico. Aunque el gran período de las ilustraciones de historia natural y el movimiento pictorialista, más o menos, fue hace un siglo, pude visualizar cómo iba a resultar. ¿Qué habría sucedido si Alvin Langdon Coburn hubiese decidido seguir su libro de retratos, Men of Mark, ilustrando un libro sobre naturaleza? ¿Y si supusiéramos que el Barón Adolf de Meyer se hubiese centrado en el reino animal como lo hizo con sus fotografías de flores?

Estas ideas se convirtieron en mi reto.

Para ser fiel a mi visión, determiné que la parte más importante del proyecto era resolver mi propia imaginería a través del mismo cristal utilizado por los Pictorialistas. Este, por supuesto, eran las lentes de enfoque suave hechas a mano en Boston, Massachussets, por Pinkham & Smith. Las lentes que F. F. Holland Day: Suffering the Ideal was the book that first introduced me to that ethereal and all too brief photographic art movement known as Pictorialism. Thus began my search to find other images and image-makers from this art movement and from the Photo-Secession movement in the United States. Clarence White, Gertrude Kasebier, Alvin Langdon Coburn, George Seeley, Anne Brigman – then suddenly the pool of imagery starts to dwindle leaving a want for more.

As an artist, I believe that when you discover a particular movement that speaks deeply to your soul you desire to become involved with it. Even if you are a hundred years too late to join in! Usually the idea is abandoned. But still, you think, what could I have brought to this movement?

As I was developing the concept for my natural history series of photographs I envisioned two disparate disciplines combined as the foundation for the series: natural history illustration and photographic pictorialism.

Although the great period of natural history illustration and the pictorial movement were, more or less, a century apart, I could visualize how it might look. What if Alvin Langdon Coburn had decided to follow up his book of portraiture, Men of Mark, with illustrating a book on nature? Suppose that Baron Adolf de Meyer had focused his attention on the animal kingdom as he had done with his still-life photographs of flowers? These very ideas became my challenge.

In order to stay true to my vision I determined that the most important piece of the project would be to resolve my own imagery through the very same glass used by the Pictorialists. This, of course, had to be soft-focus lenses hand-made in Boston, Massachusetts by the Pinkham and Smith Company. The lens that F. Holland Day helped to design and that Alfred Stieglitz encouraged his PhotoSecessionists to use.

After the first exhibition showing of my natural history series, I attended an exhibition of the photographs of Roger Fenton at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. There on a freestanding wall in the gallery hung the haunting image of a fully articulated Moa skeleton, dated 1854-58.

The specimen, an extinct bird photographed in the British Museum, was backed by a simple draped piece of light colored cloth – much like I had used. My first reaction to the photograph was that my idea had not been quite so original after all. Then, a sense of validation that I had brought forward a concept into the 21st century and made it my own.

Mi curiosidad por la descripción que de la realidad en Irán –una sociedad en la que la gente parece ser parte de un colectivo político y religioso– hacen los medios occidentales me ha llevado a viajar a ese país en varias ocasiones.

En contraste con los medios occidentales o la propaganda iraní, estas fotografías muestran no al colectivo, sino al individuo. Al colocar literalmente a los protagonistas delante de los focos, estos individuos toman los papeles principales en la vida pública en Irán. Ya no están reducidos a actuar como actores secundarios, meramente como un enlace en un sistema; se convierten en personas de carne y hueso con diferentes orígenes y estilos de vida.

Cada uno de ellos cuenta una historia distinta sobre la compleja sociedad iraní. La República Islámica y la ideología revolucionaria pasan al telón de fondo, convirtiéndose en un decorado poco iluminado.

Ni la cámara ni los sujetos intentan hacer una declaración política: ajenos al ojo vigilante del estado, la gente en las fotografías ha sido tomada en el día a día, en el milagro de la vida. Crean una pintura de la alienación de los individuos en una sociedad tradicional llena de contradicciones.

Usando una cámara de medio formato sobre un trípode y un grupo de luces, coloqué mi equipo en espacios públicos –cada vez en una localización diferente– principalmente en Teherán. Preguntaba a los peatones si les importaría posar para la cámara. Utilizando la iluminación y dándoles indicaciones, los voluntarios se convertían en "actores" de sus propias vidas. Esta aproximación lleva a interesantes encuentros, en los que las diferencias culturales y los contextos políticos y religiosos desaparecen en el momento en que son capturados en la foto.

La cámara en mi trabajo es tanto una herramienta de la imaginación como un instrumento para crear encuentros, investigar sociedades y aprender sobre realidades diferentes. Esta aproximación elimina cualquier aspecto relacionado con la fotografía documental en su forma más pura. Combinando ficción y realidad estas imágenes cuentan una historia breve e inocente, aunque al mismo tiempo la hacen tangible de modo que la imagen que se ve disimula otras realidades, invisibles a simple vista.

My curiosity about the depiction of reality in Iran – a society in which people appear to be part of a political and religious collective – by Western media has led me to travel to the country several times.

In contrast to Western media or Iranian propaganda, these photographs showcase not the collective, but the individual. By literally placing the main figures in front of the spotlights, these individuals take on the main roles in public life in Iran. They are no longer reduced to supporting cast members, merely a link in a system; they become people of flesh and blood who have different backgrounds and lifestyles. All of them tell a different story about Iran’s complex society. The Islamic Republic and the revolutionary ideology fade into the background, becoming a dimly lit décor.

Neither the camera nor the subjects attempt to make a political statement: oblivious to the monitoring eye of the state, the people in the photographs are caught in the business of everyday life, in the miracle of living.

They paint a picture of the alienation of individuals in a traditional society full of contradictions.

Using a medium format camera on a tripod and a set of lights, I set up my equipment in public places – each time at a different location – mainly in Teheran. I asked passers-by if they would be willing to pose for the camera. By using lighting and giving directions, the volunteers became "actors" in their own lives. This approach led to interesting encounters, in which cultural differences and political and religious contexts fell away in the moment they were captured by the photo.

The camera in my work is both a tool of the imagination and an instrument for encounters, to investigate societies and to learn about different realities.

This approach eliminates any aspects related to documentary photography in its purest form. By intermingling fiction and reality these images tell a brief, innocent story, while simultaneously making it tangible so that the image seen conceals other realities, invisible to the naked eye.

Elijo a mis contemporáneos en el anonimato de las grandes urbes porque su propio rostro narra, bajo la piel, historias singulares e insólitas sobre nuestra época. Hostiles a veces, casi siempre frágiles y muy a menudo heridos detrás de la opacidad de su máscara, ellos representan unas determinadas realidades sociales, y a veces, otro concepto de la belleza. También intento acercarme al individuo inclasificable y atemporal, sugerir hechos que se repiten desde tiempos lejanos. Quisiera invitar a cruzar una frontera. La historia de las últimas décadas en Occidente, la inmigración, las migraciones, el éxodo rural, el movimiento feminista, la revolución sexual, las crisis económicas, la era de la comunicación, la globalización,... todo ello ha contribuido profundamente a modificar las mentalidades, los estilos de vida hasta quebrantar el edificio social.

Ando buscando en los puntos de encuentro de la escena urbana: calles, plazas, cafés, estaciones, universidades,… luego más allá en las barriadas periféricas, lugares tan aislados del mundo, y en escenarios más marginales como cárceles, hospitales, albergues sociales, centros de reinserción, monasterios, o circos. porque también allí está nuestra sociedad. Últimamente me estoy acercando a ciertas minorías y comunidades desplazadas por razones étnicas, económicas, políticas,… sean los gitanos o la gente de los Balcanes y del Magreb, emigrados recientemente a España.

Cada día, en el ritual fotográfico, voy construyendo, poco a poco, mi autorretrato. Intento así detener el tiempo para escribir mi diario, escuchando respirar a los demás y dejando huella sobre lo efímero. Es a la vez un acto de rebeldía contra el olvido.

I choose my contemporaries in the anonymity of the big cities because their faces, under the skin, narrate unique, remarkable stories about our era. Sometimes hostile, almost always fragile and very often wounded behind the opacity of their masks, they represent specific social realities and, sometimes, another concept of beauty. I also try to approach the unclassifiable, timeless individual, to suggest things that have been repeated over and over since time began. I would like to encourage crossing a border. The history of the last few decades in the West, immigration, migrations, rural exodus, the feminist movement, the sexual revolution, economic crises, the age of communications, globalization… all this has profoundly contributed to modifying mentalities and lifestyles to the point of severing the social fabric.

I search in the meeting points of the urban scene: streets, squares, cafes, stations, universities… then further still, in the peripheral districts, places so isolated from the world, and in more marginal settings, such as prisons, hospitals, social shelters, rehabilitation centers, monasteries, or circuses. because our society is there as well. Lately, I have been approaching certain minorities and communities that have been displaced for ethnic, economic or political reasons, whether these be gypsies or people from the Balkans and the Maghreb recently immigrated to Spain.

Every day, in the photographic ritual, I am building, little by little, my self-portrait. I thus try to hold back time to write my diary, listening to others breathe and leaving a trace upon the ephemeral. At the same time it is an act of rebellion against oblivion.

Entrevista con Marie Cosindas Amber Gibson Su preparación inicial como pintora parece haber tenido una gran influencia en su modo de tomar fotografías.

El hecho de que mis primeras fotografías vinieran de una tradición pictórica y no de una fotográfica no fue accidental: quería ser pintora. Además muchos de los fotógrafos que admiraba y que me influyeron también fueron pintores en algún punto de su carrera: Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Horst, y muchos otros. El que más me influyó fue Edward Steichen, aunque mi obra no emula su estilo. Era tan inolvidable y bello, me hacía querer vivir en esa época. Estudié el período del movimiento pictorialista y especialmente me interesé por las fotografías que Steichen hizo entre 1900 y 1910, fotografías que habían hecho historia como Self-Portrait with Brush and Palette y The Black Vase with Figure. ¿Qué podría ser más pictórico? Fue la primera fotografía comprada por una colección de arte nacional y fue colgada en la Galerie National de Bruselas, indignó a los artistas de su época. Mira sus desnudos, sus paisajes y sus retratos: lo hizo todo… Pasé mucho tiempo con Grace Mayer en su oficina en el MoMA mirando las impresiones de Steichen y estuve con él en algunas ocasiones también. Cuando empecé a utilizar película Polacolor no era consciente de la dirección que tomaría mi trabajo –o de la que yo misma tomaría. Participé en un taller de Ansel Adams en 1961 y después de mirar mi portfolio de fotografías en blanco y negro, se dio cuenta de que mi trabajo tenía una amplia variedad de tonalidades. Dijo que yo estaba haciendo fotografías en blanco y negro, pero que pensaba en color: eso lo asimilé en algún momento. Entonces me enseñó un filtro 81a que reducía todo al blanco y negro. Tenía que ver con el modo en el que elegía la luz, el ambiente y el asunto. No era consciente de esto. A veces, cuando miraba a través del visor de mi cámara, hubiese deseado que el color hubiese encontrado el camino hacia la impresión final. Esto sucedió en 1965 cuando me encargaron hacer una naturaleza muerta floral para una gran campaña publicitaria de Polaroid. Lo que siguió fue un mes de intenso trabajo con la película. 1962, no me di cuenta en ese momento del efecto que tendría en mi carrera. Al principio el color de la película no se parecía a ninguno con los que había trabajado, era tan bonito. El espectro de tonalidades se extendió: el primer carrete de película de color tenía algo así como trece capas de emulsión. Casi podías ver a través de esas diferentes capas. Mis fotografías comenzaron a parecer pinturas. No fue un accidente. Pasé mi juventud mirando pinturas, pasando días enteros en museos en cualquier lugar, e intentando ser pintora.

En los primeros sesenta la fotografía en color era considerada “comercial” o “periodística” frente al blanco y negro que era considerado “serio” o “artístico”. ¿Cómo luchó contra esta percepción negativa?

Cuando comencé a hacer fotografías en color sabía que no se aceptaba como arte. Entonces no había tantos fotógrafos trabajando en color. Aunque esto nunca me importó. Había encontrado el medio que se adecuaba a mi estilo. Estaba feliz, ya que el color siempre había existido en mis fotografías en blanco y negro. Muchas veces volví a imágenes que había fotografiado previamente en blanco y negro para bañarlas en este misterioso nuevo medio en color. La película en color de Polaroid con la que trabajé en los sesenta hasta bastante entrados los setenta empezó cambiar. Utilizaba el formato de 8x10 pulgadas más y más, y entonces fui tan afortunada como para ser uno de los pocos invitados al sancta sanctorum de su inventor, el Dr Edwin H. Land, para ver su gran cámara de madera que hacía increíbles imágenes en color de 24x20 pulgadas. Lo triste fue que no podía traérmela a mi estudio en casa y trabajar del modo en el que lo hacía con los otros formatos –a la luz del día y sola. Sólo había una de estas monstruosas cámaras que parecía que estuviera construida por cuerda y cinta adhesiva. Tenía que ser utilizada en su laboratorio en Cambridge. Que sea así. Fui invitada a utilizarla e hice algunos retratros de Candis Bergan y un amigo, y algunos bodegones para una exposición en el ICA de Boston en 1976.

Polaroid anunció este año que iba a poner fin a su producción de películas instantáneas debido a la caída de las ventas en relación a la popularidad de las cámaras digitales. ¿Cómo se siente al ver que la Polaroid se ha quedado obsoleta ante el avance de la tecnología digital?

Por supuesto me entristece ver el final de la era de la Polaroid –fue una época excitante y creativa para todos los que estuvimos implicados durante esas maravillosas décadas. Nos convertimos en una familia y todavía tenemos importantes relaciones. No creo que Polaroid haya desaparecido completamente. Estoy segura de que alguien hará películas para todas esas cámaras que todavía están ahí.

Todavía no me he pasado a lo digital – todavía me gustan las películas reales, las transparencias, etc.

Todo mi trabajo para el cine era en su mayoría en dispositivas de 35 mm, aunque mi cámara de 4x5 estaba siempre allí en el caso de que pudiese secuestrar a uno de los actores y crear el escenario y la iluminación apropiados para poder trabajar. A menudo tenía que alquilar el atrezo y trabajar con aquellas talentosas personas encargadas del vestuario y del maquillaje –y a veces con los carpinteros y electricistas también.

Parece que actualmente hay una segunda vuelta de la fotografía pictorialista y de su legado…

Soy muy consciente de que una nueva generación de fotógrafos contemporáneos está trabajando de una forma más realista y tradicional, cosa que lleva pasando durante algún tiempo. Yo la he adoptado. Ver la expresión de la creatividad de los fotógrafos actuales es excitante y tampoco están intimidados por la tradición. ¿Piensa que ésta ha llevado a una revisión de su propia obra?

Sé que mi propio trabajo no ha cambiado. Las cosas son diferentes ahora: la película, las cámaras,… No pretendo entender todo lo que está sucediendo en el mundo del arte hoy. He encontrado mi propia voz a través de la prueba y el error: investigando, aprendiendo, observando y viviendo. Soy consciente por el correo que he recibido durante años que algunos fotógrafos han sido influidos por mi obra, y eso me complace mucho mientras puedan encontrar su propia firma sin imitar a otros – esto tiene que venir de dentro y tiene que ver con qué y quiénes somos.

La aproximación que hace hacia su trabajo comercial (fotografía fija para la industria del cine, reportajes de moda para Helena Rubinstein, por ejemplo) y su trabajo personal parece ser la misma. ¿Está de acuerdo? ¿Las concibe de un modo diferente?

Nunca traté mi trabajo comercial de un modo distinto a cualquier otro proyecto en el que estuviera trabajando, ya fuera Asparagus Still Life para una revista femenina o retratos de grandes escritores para Esquire, mi acercamiento era siempre el mismo. Sí, a veces estaban muy controladas dependiendo de la cámara que utilizaba y de la situación.

La cámara de 4x5 sobre un trípode producía una imagen bastante distinta de la de mi trabajo en 35 mm. En la película Glory, estuve prácticamente luchando en la Guerra Civil. Hice cientos de imágenes de acción con una Nikon, corriendo arriba y abajo por las fortalezas, subiendo a una escalera de 15 pies y evitando bayonetas en medio de una escena bélica. La cámara toma las decisiones y produce los resultados. Cada proyecto tiene sus propios requerimientos. La campaña para Helena Rubinstein fue un sueño, trabajar con famosas modelos en bellas localizaciones con ropa de grandes diseñadores para producir una fotografía que tenía que vender un producto.

Encuentro su serie de los Dandies con su actualización de un personaje del siglo XIX particularmente interesante. ¿Cómo surgió esta serie?

Vi al pintor Richard Merkin en su inauguración en 1966 y me fascinó su fantástica apariencia. Nadie vestía así en Boston por aquellos días. Llevaba un traje blanco con una flor en su solapa y su oscuro pelo estaba peinado hacia abajo, liso y brillante; parecía como si hubiese sido dibujado para resaltar sus facciones. No sabía cómo aproximarme a él o por qué. Hablamos y aceptó que le fotografiara. Antes de que me diera cuenta, estaba subida en un autobús dirigiéndome a Providence con mi estudio portátil en una mano y un trípode ligero en la otra. Su pequeño apartamento en un bajo parecía salido de un libro de cómics. Había figuritas de Mickey Mouse y Popeye en las estanterías así como los propios cómics. Los pósters eran de otra época. La única luz que podía utilizar venía de unas pocas ventanas en el dormitorio: que se convirtió en mi estudio. Mientras se vestía, encontré un cartel de Old Gold Cigarette y lo coloqué cerca de la cama donde se tendría que sentar. El hombre del cartel se parecía a él: se convirtió en un retrato doble. En un momento dado le pedí que se pusiera una corbata más colorida y me dijo: "Marie, ¡si cambio mi corbata tendré que cambiarme de traje!". La sesión duró toda la tarde. Él me inspiró la serie de los Dandies y me ayudó a contactar con Tom Wolfe y Will Davenport. Simplemente surgió desde ese momento. Camera Magazine publicó el dossier de los Dandies en septiembre de 1967, fue la primera vez que publicaron fotografías en color.

En esta serie hay retratos de Andy Warhol. ¿Puede hablarme de estas sesiones?

Fue después de mi exposición en el MoMA cuando unos amigos vinieron a mi estudio y me preguntaron si me gustaría conocer a Andy –siempre era el nombre pilar en los sesenta– y me dijeron que llevara algunas de mis Polaroids.

Llegué a la Factory en el East Side y me encontré con Warhol por primera vez. Estaba trabajando en una serigrafía enorme y hacienda impresiones. Era suave, educado y se interesó en ver los retratos en color que había llevado. Me volvieron a invitar para que regresara al día siguiente a una hora determinada y le tomara algunas fotografías. Se había vestido para la ocasión y estaba genial con una camiseta de rayas rojas y blancas, una chaqueta negra, un cinturón ancho de charol con una hebilla brillante y pantalones negros. Ahora, ¿dónde iba a trabajar? No había ni un rayo de luz, pero había una salida de emergencia roja que estaba cerrada, obstruido por enormes barriles de cosas. Me dijeron que si podía alcanzarla, podría abrir la puerta roja y dejar que la luz prohibida del día entrase en la sala. Que así fuera. Eso es lo que hice. Andy me pidió que le llamará cuando estuviera lista para trabajar. Mientras tanto, él seguía trabajando. Necesitaba más iluminación, y encontré un foco que sujeté en lo alto de un palo cerca de la puerta. La mezcla de luces era perfecta. Trabajamos bien ese día, y los retratos le gustaron. Volví varias veces y realicé retratos de sus admiradores –de los que había muchos y me apuntaron en la lista. Poco después Andy empezó a usar color para sus películas y Polaroid le presentó con su primera cámara SX70.

Interview with Marie Cosindas Amber Gibson

Your initial training as a painter seems to have had a huge influence on your way of taking photographs.

The fact that my early photographs did come from a painterly tradition and not a photographic one was no accident: I wanted to be a painter. So many of the photographers that I admired and was influenced by were painters at some point in their careers as well: Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Horst, and many others. It was Edward Steichen who inspired me the most, although my work did not emulate his style. It was so haunting and beautiful, it made me want to live in that era. I studied the period of the Pictorialist movement and especially looked at the photographs that Steichen made from early 1900 to 1910 that had made photographic history such as Self Portrait with Brush and Palette and The Black Vase with Figure. What could be more painterly? It was the first photograph to be bought by a national art collection and when it was hung in the National Galerie in Brussels, it outraged the artists of its day. Look at his nudes, landscapes and portraits: he did it all… I spent a lot of time with Grace Mayer in her office at MoMA looking at Steichen prints and I met him on a few occasions as well. From a portfolio of black-and-white prints that I was asked to submit in 1961, he purchased three for the Photo department and one for himself. In 1965, the year before my solo show at the museum, he looked at my color work too.

You are often been cited as a pioneer in the field of colour photography. When you began, were you conscious of exploring unknown territory?

When I began using Polacolor film I wasn't aware of the direction that my work would take – or that I myself would eventually take. I attended one of Ansel Adams’ workshops in 1961 and after looking at my portfolio of black-and-white prints, he noticed that my work had a narrow range of tonalities. He said that I was making black-and-white photographs, but was thinking in color: that sunk in somewhere. He then presented me with a 81a filter to look through that reduced everything to black-and-white. It had to do with the way I chose my light, my environment and my subject matter. I was totally unaware of this. At times, when I looked through the ground glass of my camera’s viewfinder, I would wish that the color would find its way to the final print.

This happened in 1965 when I was assigned to make a floral still life in color for a major Polaroid advertising campaign. What followed was a month of intense work with the film. I tried everything: mixing light, temperature control, long exposures, extended development time and filters – and did everything I wasn't supposed to do. The film responded. The results were like no other color that I had used. It was the first time I felt like painting again. in 1962 to experiment with, I didn't realize at the time what affect it would have on my career. In the beginning the color of the film was like nothing else I had worked with, it was so beautiful. The range and tonalities were extended: the first color roll film had something like 13 layers of emulsion. You could almost see through into those different layers. My photographs began to look like paintings. It was no accident. I spent my youth and early years looking at paintings, spending days in museums everywhere, and trying to be a painter.

In the early 60s colour photography was seen as “commercial” or “journalistic” as opposed to black-andwhite, which was seen as “serious” or “artistic”. How did you fight this negative perception?

When I began making color photographs I was quite aware that this was not accepted as high art. There were not that many photographers working in color then. This never bothered me though. I had found the medium that suited my style. I was happy, as color had always existed in my black-and-white photographs.

Many times I returned to images that I had previously photographed in black-and-white to bath them in this mysterious new color medium. The Polaroid color that I worked with in the 60s and well into the 70s began to change. I was using the 8x10 inch format more and more, and then I was fortunate enough to be one of the few who were invited into the inner sanctum of its inventor, Dr Edwin H. Land, to see this huge plywood camera that made an unbelievable 24x20 inch color image. The sad part was that I couldn't bring it into my studio at home and work with it the way I did with the other formats – in daylight and alone. There was only one of those monster cameras that looked as though it were being held together with string and tape.

It had to be used in his Cambridge Laboratory. So be it. I was invited to use it and I made some portraits of Candis Bergan and a friend, and some still life images for a show in 1976 at the ICA in Boston.

Polaroid announced this year that it would be halting production of instant film due to falling sales in the face of the popularity digital cameras as a means of producing an immediate image. How do you feel about Polaroid being made obsolete by digital technology?

Of course I am sad to see the end of the Polaroid era – it was an exciting and creative time for all of us who were involved during those wonderful decades. We became a family and still have very strong connections. I don't think Polaroid has completely disappeared. I'm certain someone will be making film for all of those cameras that are still out there.

I have not gone digital as yet – I still like real film, transparencies, etc. All of my movie work was mostly 35mm slides, although my view camera was always there in the event that I could capture one of the actors and create the proper set up and lighting where we could work. Oftentimes I would have to rent props and work with all of those talented people who do the wardrobe and makeup – and at times the carpenters and electricians as well.

There currently seems to be a second comeback of Pictorialist photography and its legacy …

I am well aware that a whole new generation of contemporary photographers are working in a more realistic and traditional manner, which has been going on for some time. I have embraced it. To see the creative expression of photographers working today is exciting, and they are not intimidated by tradition either.

Do you think it has lead to a revision of your own work by the art establishment?

I know that my own work hasn’t changed. Things are different now: the film, the cameras… I don’t pretend to understand all that is happening in the art world today. I have found my own voice through trial and error: searching, observing and living. I'm aware from mail that I've received over the years that some photographers have been influenced by my work, and this pleases me a great deal, as long as they can find their own signature without imitating others – this has to come from within and has to do with what and who they are.

Your approach towards your commercial work (still photographs for the film industry, fashion shoots for Helena Rubinstein, for example) and your personal work seem to be the same. Would you agree? Did you conceive them differently?

I never treated my commercial work differently than any other photo project that I worked on, whether it was the Asparagus Still Life for one of the ladies magazines or portraits of great writers for Esquire, my approach was always the same. Yes, they were very controlled at times depending on the camera that I used and the situation. The 4x5 view camera on a tripod produced an image quite different than my 35mm work on the film Glory where I was practically fighting in the Civil War. I made hundreds of action images with a Nikon, running up and down fortresses, climbing 15ft ladders and ducking bayonets in the middle of a battle scene. The camera makes the decisions and the results. Every project has its own requirements. The Helena Rubinstein campaign was a dream, working with famous models in beautiful locations with great designer clothes to produce a photograph that had to sell a product.

I find your Dandies series with their updating of a 19th century personage particularly interesting. How did this series come about?

I saw the painter Richard Merkin at his opening in 1966 and was taken back by his fantastic appearance. No one dressed like that in Boston in those days. He wore a white suit with a flower in his lapel and his dark hair was brushed down slick and shiny and looked as though it had been drawn to highlight his features. I didn't know how to approach him or why. We talked and he agreed to be photographed. Before I knew it, I was on a bus to Providence with my portable studio in one hand and a lightweight tripod in the other. His small dark basement apartment was something out of a comic book. There were Mickey Mouse and Pop Eye figurines on the shelves as well as the comic books themselves. And the posters were from another time. The only light that I could use came from a few small windows in the bedroom: that became my studio. As he was getting dressed I found an Old Gold Cigarette poster and placed it near the bed where he would have to sit. The man in the poster looked just like him: it became a double portrait. At one time I asked if he would put on a more colorful tie and he said, "Marie, if I change my tie I'll have to change my suit!" We photographed all afternoon. He inspired the Dandies series and arranged for me to meet Tom Wolfe and Will Davenport. It just took off from there. Camera Magazine published the Dandies Portfolio in September 1967 – it was the first time they had printed color photographs.

Within this series is a portrait of Andy Warhol. Can you tell me about that photo shoot?

It was after my show at MoMA that some friends came by my studio, asked if I would like to meet Andy – it was always first names in the 60s – and said to bring some of my Polaroids. I arrived at the Factory on the East Side and met Warhol for the first time. He was working on a huge silk screen and making prints. He was soft spoken, polite and interested in seeing the color portraits that I had brought along. I was invited back the next day at a particular time to photograph him. He was dressed up for the occasion and looked great in a T-shirt with bold red-and-white stripes, a black jacket, a wide black patent leather belt with a shinny buckle and black pants. Now, where was I going to work? There was not a ray of daylight, but there was a red fire door which was closed shut with huge barrels of stuff barricading it. I was told that if I could get to it, I could open the red door and allow the forbidden daylight into the room. So be it. That’s what I did. Andy asked me to call when I was ready to work. He in the meantime had continued working. I needed more illumination and found a spot light which I clamped high to a pole near the door. The mixture of light was perfect. We did well that day, and he liked the portraits. I went back several times and made portraits of his admirers – of which there were many, and I was put on the list. Shortly after this Andy began using color for his films and Polaroid presented him with his first SX70 camera.

El cine es fundamental en la vida egipcia y me inspiró mucho mientras crecía, especialmente las antiguas películas en tecnicolor y los carteles pintados de películas en las calles de El Cairo. Pero también los retratos de familia coloreados a mano que solía ver cuando era un niño en la mayoría de los apartamentos. Me dieron vueltas durante mucho tiempo. Aprendí esta vieja técnica y fui capaz de darle un aire contemporáneo en mis fotografías. No obstante, nunca me he sentido fotógrafo: en primer lugar la aproximación a mi trabajo no es fotográfico,... es más como un diario pintado.

Desde que empecé, siempre he pedido a la gente que actúe. Me gusta dirigir a la gente, pero también me gusta mirarlos: es como un pequeño juego al que jugamos juntos durante un cierto tiempo. Esta idea de mise-en-scène viene también de mi temprana afición por el cine egipcio.

Cuando era un niño y veía aquellas películas, siempre estaba preguntando dónde estaban todos esos actores. La mayoría de las veces la respuesta era que estaban muertos.

Me enamoré de todas aquellas personas bellas y muertas y creo que inconscientemente esto me hizo querer encontrarme y fotografiar a gente antes de que murieran o de que yo muera: era mi modo de decir que todavía estoy vivo y de mantener vivos a otros y su recuerdo a través de mi obra. Estoy muy preocupado por la muerte y toda mi obra inmortaliza mi encuentro con alguien, graba un momento que nunca volverá a suceder.

Mi proyecto de fotografiar a mis amigos durmiendo o en la cama es completamente personal (aunque podría recordar a los desnudos del siglo XIX) y se relaciona con mis otros proyectos que se refieren al sexo, la muerte y la soledad. Es también como conocer a alguien a través de su lado más íntimo. Mi aproximación enfatiza las emociones, la ternura expresada de forma natural por el cuerpo, más que el cuerpo en sí. El hecho de dormir ocupa una parte importante de mis pensamientos, sobre todo por su relación con la muerte, pero también porque es sexual. Hay muchos significados ahí. La gente también parece tranquila, natural y honesta cuando cierra los ojos,... casi quieres sostenerlos en tus brazos. ¿Has visto a alguien que parezca poco natural o superficial mientras duerme?

Cinema is central to Egyptian life and I was very inspired by it while growing up, especially the old technicolored movies and painted movie posters in Cairo's streets. But also the hand colored black-andwhite family portraits that I used to see when I was a kid in most apartments. It was around me so much. I learned this old technique and was able to give it a contemporary edge in my photographs. However, I have never really felt that I'm a photographer: in the first place my approach to my work is not photographic... for me it is more like a painted diary.

Since I started, I have always been asking people to play roles. I like directing people, but I also like watching them: it's like a little game we play together for a certain amount of time. This idea of mise-en-scène also comes from that early love of Egyptian cinema.

When I was a child watching those movies, I was always asking where are all the actors were. Most of time the answer was that they were dead. I fell in love with all those dead, beautiful people and I think subconsciously this made me want to meet and photograph people before they died or before I die: it was my way of saying I'm still alive and that I also keep others and their memory alive through my work. I'm very preoccupied by death and all my work immortalizes my meeting with someone, engraves a moment that will never happen again.

My project of photographing my friends sleeping or in bed is completely personal (although it might remind people of 19th century photographic nudes) and it relates to my other projects involving sex, death and loneliness. It's also about getting to know someone through the most intimate door. My approach emphasizes emotions, the tenderness naturally expressed by the body, more than the body itself. Sleeping takes up a big part of my thinking, mostly because of its relation to death, but also because it is sexual. There are many meanings in it. People also look so peaceful, natural and honest when they close their eyes... you almost want to hold them in your arms. Have you seen anyone looking unnatural or superficial while sleeping?

En el vocabulario de insultos empleados en fotografía, el adjetivo "pictorialista" es, junto con "comercial", una de las ofensas más brutales. Calificar una obra de excesivamente pictórica supone desecharla por blanda y sentimental, por demasiado romántica, adocenada e indulgente. Sin duda, los fotógrafos pictorialistas de finales del siglo XX fueron culpables de algunas de estas infracciones. En sus últimas etapas, los movimientos artísticos suelen descender, invariablemente, al nivel de sus peores practicantes, por otra parte, una serie de artistas irreflexivos contribuyeron a que el arte pictorialista se hiciera vulnerable al exceso. Sin embargo, en sus comienzos, alrededor de la década de 1880, representó la vanguardia y sacudió los mismos cimientos del grupo artístico dominante. Antes del Pictorialismo, la fotografía ocupaba un lugar subordinado dentro de las artes visuales. Los fotógrafos de la época victoriana soñaban con que la fotografía fuese aceptada como una forma de arte, sin embargo, los pictorialistas fueron los primeros en proclamar su estatus como una forma seria de arte. La equipararon en importancia al dibujo y al grabado, aunque reconocían que no se encontraba al mismo nivel que la pintura. En su apogeo, la polémica defensa de técnicas vanguardistas por parte del Pictorialismo deslumbró al espectador y escandalizó a la crítica. Sin embargo, hacia la década de 1920, el Pictorialismo perdió impulso, el movimiento fue percibido como blando y débil, y llegó a representar todo aquello a lo que no aspiraba la fotogra-

fía moderna. Muchos artistas adoptaron la máquina, la visión fría, marcada e inmutable que sólo la cámara y la lente eran capaces de conseguir. El hecho de que la mayoría de ellos abandonaran rápidamente las presunciones pictorialistas contribuyó a aumentar el carácter marginal y simple de los pocos que se aferraron a este estilo. La generación más joven no se enteró de los encendidos debates que impulsaron la ascensión del Pictorialismo. En definitiva, llegó a ser considerado como poco más que un estilo curioso y anticuado.

En su forma más pura, el Pictorialismo fue mucho más que un mero conjunto de convenciones artísticas.

Fue la primera expresión radical de una nueva actitud respecto a la fotografía, según la cual se esperaba que los artistas echaran mano de todos los medios a su disposición para dotar a sus obras de carga expresiva. Los pictorialistas se replantearon la fotografía de un modo completo, innovando todas las fases de la toma de fotos.

Sus composiciones eran insólitas; trabajaban desde ángulos obtusos, echaban mano de perspectivas profundas y abordaban temas narrativos. Cubrieron los objetivos con gasa y medias de seda, utilizaron cámaras que no podían enfocarse. Rascaron, ahumaron y reticularon los negativos. Elaboraron su propio papel en tamaños nunca vistos, con capas de vivos colores y entintaron las fotos en la imprenta. Manipularon la textura y el acabado de las copias, empapando, marcando y barnizando el papel para crear efectos dinámicos. Trabajaron infatiga-

blemente en el cuarto oscuro, idearon nuevos procesos, manipularon emulsiones antes y después de la exposición, eliminaron detalles frotándolos con los dedos, varas, cepillos y esponjas, realzaron sus obras con gouache y acuarelas y pintaron el papel con criterio selectivo usando emulsiones. Como consecuencia de todo ello, el Pictorialismo representa una especie de explosión cambriana en la creatividad fotográfica. En esta época se inventaron infinidad de técnicas con el objetivo de doblegar la fotografía a voluntad del artista.

Resulta difícil definir el movimiento pictorialista, en gran parte por la diversidad de manifestaciones artísticas cobijadas bajo su paraguas. Aunque ya se anunciaba en el arte de los calotipistas de la década de 1850, y pese a que los pictorialistas admiraban a ciertos pioneros victorianos como Hill, Adamson y Julia Margaret Cameron, la llegada de la fotografía pictorialista no tuvo una inspiración única. El Pictorialismo se prolongó aproximadamente desde finales de 1880 hasta finales de la Primera Guerra Mundial. La típica foto pictorialista se hace a mano con foco suave, tiene textura y es muy coloreada.

Sin embargo, es difícil generalizar incluso en estos aspectos básicos, pues los pictorialistas utilizaron una amplia variedad de métodos para hacer sus fotos. Hay fotos pictorialistas espectaculares, como las de Henri Berssenbrugge en Holanda, o Juan Vilatoba i Figols en España, hechas con foco nítido, en blanco y negro, utilizando papeles de gelatina de plata de venta en los comercios, técnicas normalmente no asociadas a la fotografía pictorialista. Por lo tanto, el Pictorialismo no se distingue por procesos específicos, sino por una actitud experimental omnipresente en la que lo primordial era el control artístico.

El Modernismo surgió del Pictorialismo en las décadas de 1910 y 1920. Los artistas modernistas destacaron la naturaleza mecánica de la fotografía; sus predecesores pictorialistas fueron más prácticos. Si el prototipo de fotógrafo moderno se situaba detrás de la cámara, el pictorialista se colocaba en su interior. Para el pictorialista, las imágenes estaban para ser utilizadas; un negativo sin manipular no era más una obra de arte acabada que un tubo de óleo. Por su parte, los modernistas exaltaron la omnisciencia de la cámara, dejaron hablar a la cámara y adoptaron el ojo de la lente. Consideraban

la realidad fotográfica sin modificar como metáfora del lugar ocupado por la humanidad en la época de la máquina. Los pictorialistas carecían de tales afectaciones. Confiaban en sus propios ojos y se guiaban por sus propias voces. A pesar de algunos que fueron partidarios de un enfoque comparativamente "directo", entre los que destacó Alfred Stieglitz, todos compartieron la preocupación por la experiencia del espectador y la expresión artística, independientemente de cómo se conseguía. Para el Pictorialismo, la fotografía carecía de aspectos sagrados. La cámara era una herramienta, inútil en sí misma, que adquiría valor sólo en manos experimentadas.

El Pictorialismo nació del movimiento Arts & Crafts.

Es lógico, pues, que dos de sus principales centros, Londres y Viena, fueran capitales marcadas por la existencia de prósperas escuelas de diseño a finales del siglo XIX: William Morris y el llamado estilo Liberty en Inglaterra; el Wiener Werkstätte y el Sezessionstil, en Austria. Como sus primos de las artes decorativas, los fotógrafos pictorialistas trataron de establecer una distensión entre el arte hecho por el hombre y el hecho por la máquina, empleando el instrumento brutal de las técnicas de producción masiva para producir objetos personales sensibles e íntimos. Por otra parte, como las escuelas de diseño a las que se equipararon, la fotografía pictorialista alentó a muchos fotógrafos a romper con los grupos tradicionales a los que consideraban absolutamente provincianos.

La llegada de la cámara Kodak y otras similares, así como de los sistemas automáticos de finales de 1880, produjo un aumento considerable de aspirantes a fotógrafos. Estos nuevos fotógrafos constituyeron un grupo bastante ingenuo, con escasos o nulos conocimientos de fotografía e incluso de cualquier tipo de arte. Aunque algunos, en particular, Alfred Lichtwark en Alemania, adoptaron este influjo y el espíritu democratizante que representaba, pero los observadores menos idealistas cuestionaron el mérito de admitir la entrada en la comunidad de aguerridos fotógrafos de esta avalancha de paletos estúpidos. ¿Qué futuro podía tener el arte fotográfico, se preguntaban, si cualquiera con dinero y un mínimo interés podía practicarlo? ¿Podía el mundo prosaico y vulgar de las instantáneas y los documentos

alumbrar una fotografía culta? Las cuestiones planteadas por las revistas pictorialistas y defendidas por sus manifiestos no eran exactamente nuevas, pero supusieron un momento culminante tras años de debate filosófico sobre estos y otros temas relacionados.

Con el objetivo de que se reconociera la fotografía como una forma de arte genuina, los pictorialistas buscaron inspiración en las artes hermanas. En ocasiones, ello suponía copiar las convenciones de la pintura, en otras, reproducir pinturas específicas. Muchas de las grandes obras pictorialistas son pastiches de cuadros famosos. La espectacular Hermanos de los hermanos Hofmeister, de 1901 (Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburgo) es una reinterpretación de un óleo perdido del icono romántico Philipp Otto Runge. Artist and model, de Richard Polak, 1914 (National Media Museum, Bradford) es una toma de Las Meninas de Velázquez (El Prado). Aunque la influencia del arte simbolista se advierte en todo el canon pictorialista, lo más asombroso es la asimilación oportunista de estilos y estrategias de toda la historia del arte occidental y, en una medida nada desdeñable, del arte japonés. Los pictorialistas visitaban los museos de arte, utilizaban las obras expuestas como puntos de partida para la exploración fotográfica. Al hacerlo, se encontraron sin querer con uno los principios esenciales de lo que más tarde se convertiría en el postmodernismo: la ilimitada asimilación de imágenes de épocas anteriores. Se podría reconstruir la historia del arte a través de analogías pictorialistas, el renacimiento pictorialista precedió al barroco pictorialista; el romanticismo pictorialista precedió al modernismo pictorialista. De vez en cuando, dichas referencias históricas llegan a mezclare en una única foto.

Posiblemente, ningún otro movimiento artístico ha bebido de otros medios de forma tan generosa, transparente y sin empacho. Se pueden encontrar caravaggios pictorialistas o picassos pictorialistas. La moda artística de finales del siglo XIX también quedó profusamente representada, desde el orientalismo a la Escuela de La Haya. Existen incluso retablos, bancos del retablo y predelas. Esta capacidad de imitar otras formas artísticas se presentaba como prueba del derecho legítimo de la fotografía a ocupar un lugar en el panteón de las artes.

para hacer un facsímil de un rembrandt, entonces, se la podía usar para hacer casi cualquier cosa.

Una vez demostrado su virtuosismo, los pictorialistas pasaron a introducir su arte en la corriente cultural dominante. Por primera vez, se colgaron fotografías no sólo en los principales museos, sino al lado de obras en otros medios. La audacia de esta disposición no tenía precedentes. Para diferenciarse de los fotógrafos corrientes, algunos pictorialistas hicieron copias de grandes dimensiones, como por ejemplo, la obra de 1909 Canal holandés, de los Hofmeister (Hamburgo). Se trata de una impresión múltiple en goma bicromatada en la que cada capa se imprime en un registro perfecto y mide 1,1 m de ancho. El tamaño trajo consigo la presentación cuidada. Los marcos muy elaborados, concebidos por los artistas pictorialistas, constituyen uno de los aspectos menos apreciados de la práctica pictorialista. Con frecuencia, el artista se ocupaba personalmente de diseñar el marco teniendo en mente una imagen específica y utilizaba maderas con mucha veta, pintura blanca y filigrana dorada.

En la actualidad, se menosprecia a los pictorialistas por haberse apartado de la verdadera esencia de la fotografía, pero ellos, al menos, no lo veían así. Al contrario, se imaginaban explorando los extremos a los que puede llegar la fotografía, el suyo era un medio con infinitas posibilidades. El Pictorialismo representa un enfoque utilitario del medio que recientemente ha vuelto a ponerse de moda. Por irónico que parezca, pese a su creatividad deslumbrante, el movimiento moderno de 1920 y de años posteriores siguió una serie de reglas más estrictas.

Pese a que los modernistas se manifestaron de distintas formas, los unía su interés por las cualidades innatas de la cámara y la lente. La capacidad de la fotografía de captar y transmitir una versión de la realidad se convirtió en su distintivo. Los modernistas trataron de crear un arte adecuado a una nueva era, que no se pareciera a nada de lo anterior. En parte, el Modernismo nació como rechazo a las estrategias pictorialistas y, cabe destacar en este contexto que, muchos de los grandes fotógrafos modernistas como Drtikol, Steichen, Strand y Weston comenzaron sus carreras como pictorialistas.

Con el tiempo, los críticos han abandonado la cuestión de qué es realmente fotográfico en el grupo modernista. El enfoque franco que los modernistas hacen del

medio, representado por las primeras manifestaciones de la Neue Sachlichkeit y el grupo f/64 ha pasado a ser sinónimo de lo que significa que algo sea "fotográfico".

En ningún otro campo es tan aparente esta idea como en el reino del foco.

El vínculo entre foco nítido y objetividad fotográfica no suele cuestionarse. Sin embargo, los pictorialistas reconocieron los límites de la fotografía inalterada, y precisamente esto los impulsó a analizar cómo podía manipularse la imagen fotográfica para alcanzar efectos oculares. En la década de 1890, los debates pictorialistas se centraban en la naturaleza excepcionalmente fotográfica del foco suave y en cómo expresaba mejor la visión fotográfica. En otras palabras, mientras los modernos sostuvieron luego que el foco nítido era intrínsecamente fotográfico, los pictorialistas creían lo contrario, que el foco suave era, a todas luces, un producto mecánico. Argumentaban que si el ojo humano no ve como lo hace la fotografía, sea del tipo que sea, el foco suave, efecto específicamente fotográfico, ni siquiera se aproxima a la visión corriente.

La forma en que los pictorialistas usaron el foco suave también fue novedosa. Los pictorialistas consideraban la falta de nitidez y claridad como una forma de romper con el literalismo esclavo de la fotografía de foco nítido. Al emplear el foco suave, los pictorialistas intentaron hacer más gestual la fotografía. Como la pintura figurativa, confiaban en hacer pensar al espectador más que registrar una determinada escena. En el siglo XIX no se percibía así la fotografía. Cuando se toma una foto corriente, se registra la forma en que existían una serie de circunstancias en un determinado momento. Los pictorialistas dejaron a un lado este principio básico de la fotografía. El foco suave redujo el caudal de información contenida en una imagen de manera que sus detalles no fuesen reconocibles; con ello se conseguía el efecto de crear generalizaciones a partir de lo específico. En una naturaleza muerta pictorialista, por ejemplo, se nos invita a pensar en la fruta y las flores como conceptos, se eliminan los detalles identificables del arreglo. Una rosa pictorialista, con foco suave, podría ser cualquier rosa, del mismo modo que un desnudo podría ser cualquier desnudo. Por esta misma razón, las fotografías pictorialistas suelen asociarse a los estados oníricos.

Los sueños, como las fotografías con foco suave, rara vez son precisos.

Además del lugar único que ocuparon dentro de las artes en general, los pictorialistas fueron también uno de los primeros movimientos artísticos verdaderamente internacionales. Aunque el movimiento prosperó en capitales culturales como Nueva York, Londres, París, Berlín y Viena, estas ciudades sólo fueron las plataformas más conocidas para un movimiento que se propagó al mundo entero. En Estados Unidos, por ejemplo, se formaron grupos prácticamente en todos los municipios. Se decía que el grupo más importante del mundo estaba en San Francisco, por otra parte, había organizaciones activas en Búfalo, Mineápolis, Cleveland y Cincinnati, por nombrar unas pocas. En el resto del mundo, surgieron grupos importantes en Rusia, Grecia, México, Australia y Japón. El Pictorialismo fue el estilo internacional de la fotografía de principios del siglo XX; casi todos los países contaban con su propia variedad de seguidores pictorialistas. Además, los pictorialistas emplearon profusamente la polinización cruzada viajando libremente de un país a otro, enviando sus fotos a salas lejanas y entregando imágenes a revistas extranjeras. Lo más sorprendente del fenómeno pictórialista fue que logró una difusión amplia y profunda.

Los historiadores nunca se han sentido del todo cómodos con el término "pictorialismo". Toda fotografía, sin tener en cuenta cuándo y cómo fue hecha, es fundamentalmente pictorialista. Distinguir un movimiento histórico por su tendencia a hacer fotos dice bien poco de sus objetivos. Con el paso de los años han aparecido otras denominaciones, fotografía estética, art nouveau fotográfico, incluso impresionismo fotográfico.

Sin embargo, "pictorialismo" es la denominación más utilizada. Posiblemente se trate de un nombre tan adecuado como cualquier otro. ¿Cómo, si no, describir tan ambicioso despliegue de imaginación artística?

Fluid, Plastic, Pictorial Phillip Prodger

In the lexicon of photographic insults, the word "pictorial" ranks alongside "commercial" as one of the most brutal putdowns of all. To say a work is too pictorial is to dismiss it as soft and sentimental; as overly romantic, derivative and self-indulgent.

Undoubtedly, turn-of-the-twentieth-century Pictorial photographers were sometimes guilty of these offences. The tail ends of art movements invariably descend to the level of their worst practitioners, and the unapologetic extravagance of Pictorial art rendered it vulnerable to excess by thoughtless artists. Yet, when it began in the 1880s it represented the avant garde, shaking the art establishment to its very core.

Before Pictorialism, photography assumed a subordinate position in the visual arts. Victorian-era photographers dreamed of photography’s eventual acceptance as an art, but Pictorialists were the first to affirm its status as a serious art form. They considered it equal in importance to drawing and printmaking, but not, they conceded, quite on par with painting. At its peak, Pictorialism’s controversial advocacy of cutting-edge techniques dazzled viewers and shocked critics. By the 1920s, however, Pictorialism’s momentum stalled, and the movement was seen as tired and flaccid, the epitome of everything modern photography aspired not to be. New artists embraced the machine – the cold, sharp, unflinching vision only camera and lens were thought to achieve. The fact E X I T Nº 30-2008 140

that most artists quickly abandoned Pictorial conceits only made those few who clung to the style seem increasingly marginal and unsophisticated. The younger generation knew nothing of the fiery debates that propelled Pictorialism’s rise. Ultimately, it was seen as little more than a quaint and outdated style.

In its purest form however, Pictorialism was much more than a simple set of artistic conventions. It was the radical first expression of a new attitude towards photography, in which artists were expected to marshal every means at their disposal to infuse their work with expressive charge. Pictorialists rethought photography from the ground up, managing every step of photographic picture making in innovative ways. Their compositions were unusual – they worked from obtuse angles, embraced plunging perspectives, and tackled narrative themes. They strung gauze and silk stockings across their lenses and used cameras that could not be focused. They scratched, smoked, and reticulated their negatives. They made their own papers in unprecedented sizes, with vivid, layered colours, and inked their photographs on printing presses. They manipulated the texture and finish of their prints – soaking, scuffing, and varnishing their papers to create dynamic effects. And they worked tirelessly in the darkroom: inventing new processes, manipulating emulsions prior to and after exposure; rubbing away details with their fingers, sticks, brushes, and sponges;

highlighting their works in gouache and watercolour; and painting emulsions selectively on paper. As a result, Pictorialism represents a kind of Cambrian explosion of photographic creativity. Countless techniques were invented in the period, all with the aim of bending photography to the artist’s will.

The Pictorial movement is difficult to define, largely because of the diversity of art produced under its umbrella. Although it was foreshadowed in the art of the calotypists of the 1850s, and though Pictorialists admired certain Victorian pioneers such as Hill and Adamson and Julia Margaret Cameron, there was no single inspiration for the arrival of Pictorialist photography. Pictorialism lasted from roughly the late 1880s to the end of the First World War. The typical Pictorial photograph is soft focus, textured, handmade, and richly tinted. However, it is difficult to generalize about even these basics, as Pictorialists used a wide variety of methods to make their pictures.

Spectacular Pictorial photographs, such as those made

by Henri Berssenbrugge in the Netherlands, or Juan Vilatoba i Figols in Spain, were made with sharp focus and using commercially made black-and-white gelatine-silver papers, techniques not normally associated with Pictorial photography. Pictorialism, therefore, is not distinguished by specific processes, but by a pervasive experimental attitude in which artistic control was viewed as paramount.

Modernism emerged from Pictorialism in the 1910s and 20s. Modern artists celebrated photography’s mechanical nature; their Pictorial predecessors were more hands-on. If the prototypical Modern photographer stood behind the camera, the Pictorialist stood inside it. For the Pictorialist, imagery existed to be used – an unaltered negative was no more a finished work of art than a tube of oil paint.

Modernists, by contrast, celebrated the omniscience of the camera – letting the camera "speak," and embracing the "eye" of the lens. They viewed unaltered photographic reality as a metaphor for humanity’s place in the machine age. Pictorialists had no such affectations. They trusted only their own eyes, and relied on their own voices. Notwithstanding those who favoured a comparatively "straight" approach –

Alfred Stieglitz pre-eminent among them – all were united in preoccupation with viewer experience and artistic expression, regardless of how it was accomplished. In Pictorialism, no aspect of photography was sacred. The camera was a tool, useless in itself, and valuable only in skilled hands.

Pictorialism grew out of the Arts and Crafts movement. It is logical therefore that two of the main centres of Pictorialism, London and Vienna, were capitals marked by the existence of thriving fin-desiècle design schools — William Morris and the socalled Liberty style in England, and the Wiener Werkstätte and Sezessionstil in Austria. Like their cousins in the decorative arts, Pictorial photographers sought to broker a detente between human and machine-made art, using the blunt instrument of mass-production techniques to make sensitive and intimate personal objects. Moreover, like the design schools they paralleled, Pictorial photography inspired bands of photographers to break away from traditionalist groups they viewed as hopelessly parochial.

The arrival of the Kodak camera and similar, wedo-the-work systems in the late 1880s resulted in a considerable increase in the numbers of aspiring photographers. These new photographers were a broadly naïve group with little to no training in photography or, indeed, in art of any kind. Although some, notably Alfred Lichtwark in Germany, embraced this influx and the democratizing spirit it represented, less idealistic observers questioned the merit of admitting floods of mindless rubes into the battletested photographic community. What, they wondered, is the future of photographic art when anyone with money and a modicum of interest can do it? Can an elite, cultured photography emerge from the mundane, vernacular world of snap shots and documents? The issues raised in Pictorial journals and championed in their manifestos were not exactly new, but they marked a climax in decades of philosophical debate on these and related subjects.

With recognition of photography as a fully-fledged art form as their aim, Pictorialists naturally turned to sister arts for inspiration. At a minimum this meant

copying painterly conventions; sometimes it meant reproducing specific paintings. Many of the great Pictorial masterpieces are pastiches of celebrated canvases. The Hofmeister brothers’ spectacular Siblings of 1901 is a reinterpretation of a lost oil by Romantic icon Philipp Otto Runge; Richard Polak’s Artist and Model, 1914 is a take on Velazquez’s Las Meninas.

Though the influence of Symbolist art is apparent throughout the Pictorial canon, most striking is the opportunistic absorption of styles and strategies from across the history of Western (and to a significant degree, Japanese) art. Pictorialists visited art museums, using the works on display as points of departure for photographic exploration. In so doing, they inadvertently stumbled upon one of the principal tenets of what would later become Postmodernism – the unbounded assimilation of imagery from earlier times. One could reconstruct the history of art through Pictorial analogues – Pictorial Renaissance preceding Pictorial Baroque; Pictorial Romanticism preceding Pictorial Modern. Occasionally, such historical references are even mixed in a single photograph.

Arguably no other art movement has ever drawn so liberally, transparently and unapologetically from other media. One can find Pictorial Caravaggios, or Pictorial Picassos, for example. Turn-of-the-century art fashion was also generously represented, from Orientalism to the Hague School. There are even Pictorial altarpieces, screens, and praedellas. This ability to mimic other art forms was submitted as proof of photography’s rightful place in the pantheon of arts. If one can use the camera to make a facsimile of a Rembrandt, Pictorialists reasoned, surely one can use it to do just about anything.

Having established their virtuosity, Pictorialists proceeded to inject their art into the mainstream of art culture. For the first time, photographs were hung not just in major museums, but alongside works in other media; the audacity of this arrangement was unprecedented. To separate themselves from ordinary photographers, some Pictorialists made enormous prints – the Hofmeisters' Dutch Canal of 1909, for example, a multiple gum bichromate print with each layer printed in perfect registration, is over 1 metre

wide. With size came thoughtful presentation. One of the least appreciated aspects of Pictorial practice is the intricate frames Pictorial artists devised. Often the artist designed the frame personally and with a particular image in mind, using an extraordinary vocabulary of thick, heavily figured woods, white paint, and gold filigree.

Nowadays, Pictorialists are disparaged for having drifted from the true essence of photography, but they, at least, did not see it that way. To the contrary, they imagined themselves exploring the extremes of what photography was capable of – theirs was a medium of limitless possibility. Pictorialism embodies a utilitarian approach to the medium which is only recently coming back into vogue. Ironically, for all its dazzling creativity, the Modern movement of the 1920s and later followed a narrower set of rules.

Though Modernists operated in various different modes, they were unified in their interest in the innate qualities of camera and lens. Photography’s ability to capture and transmit a version of reality became its hallmark. Modernists sought to develop an art befitting a new age, and which looked unlike anything that had come before it. Thus Modernism was born in part as a rejection of Pictorial strategies, and it is noteworthy in this context that many of the great Modern photographers, such as Drtikol, Steichen, Strand, and Weston began their careers as Pictorialists.

Over time, critics have ceded the question of what is properly photographic to the Modernist camp. The Modernists’ frank approach to the medium, typified by the early developments of the Neue Sachlichkeit and f64, has become synonymous with what it means for something to be "photographic". In no arena is this notion more apparent than in the realm of focus.

The link between sharp focus and photographic objectivity is seldom questioned. However, Pictorialists recognized the limits of unaltered photography, and this inspired them to examine how photographic imagery might be manipulated to achieve ocular effects. In the 1890s, Pictorialist discussions centered on the uniquely photographic nature of soft focus, and how it best embodied photographic vision. In other words, whereas the Moderns later held sharp focus to

be quintessentially photographic, the Pictorialists believed the opposite – that soft focus was a distinctly mechanical product. The unassisted eye doesn’t see like photography of any description, they reasoned, but soft focus is a particularly photographic effect – it in no way approximates ordinary vision.

The way in which Pictorialists employed soft focus was also novel. Pictorialists saw fuzziness and indistinctness as a way of breaking from the slavish literalism of sharp-focus photography. Using soft focus, Pictorialists attempted to make photography more gestural; like figurative painting, they hoped to provoke thought in the viewer rather than record an actual scene. This is not how photography was perceived in the 19th-century. When one takes an ordinary photograph, one records the way a set of circumstances existed at a particular period of time.

Pictorialists set aside this basic principle of photography. Soft focus reduced the amount of information contained in an image so that its details were unrecognizable; this had the effect of creating generalizations out of specifics. In a Pictorial still-life, for example, one is invited to think about fruit and flowers as concepts – the identifiable particulars of the arrangement are stripped away. A soft-focus Pictorial rose could be any rose; likewise, a nude could be any nude. For this same reason Pictorial photographs are often associated with dream states. Dreams, like softfocus photographs, are seldom precise.

Beyond the unique position they staked within the arts as a whole, Pictorialists were also one of the first truly international art movements. Though the movement thrived in cultural capitals – New York, London, Paris, Berlin, and Vienna – these cities were just the most conspicuous platforms for a movement that percolated throughout the world. Within the

United States, for example, groups formed in virtually every municipality; the largest group in the world was said to be in San Francisco, while there were active organizations in Buffalo, Minneapolis, Cleveland, and Cincinnati, to name just a few. Internationally, important groups arose in Russia, Greece, Mexico, Australia, and Japan. Pictorialism was the International Style of turn-of-the-twentieth-century photography; just about every country had its own breed of Pictorial enthusiasts. Moreover, Pictorialists cross-pollinated widely, moving freely from one country to another, sending their pictures to faraway salons, and submitting images to foreign magazines.

One of the most remarkable things about the Pictorial phenomenon was the broad, grass-roots support it enjoyed.

Historians have never been completely comfortable with the name "Pictorialism". All photography, regardless of when and how it was made, is fundamentally pictorial; to distinguish a historical movement for its propensity for making pictures reveals little about its aims. Over the years alternative names have been floated – Aesthetic photography, Photographic Art Nouveau, and even Photographic Impressionism. Yet Pictorialism is the name that stuck.

Perhaps it is as appropriate as any name could be.

How else to describe such an ambitious outpouring of artistic imagination?

Desde que era pequeña, he estado mirando hacia la pintura, así como dibujando retratos. El amor al arte en general, y a la pintura en particular, ha sido muy fuerte desde mi infancia. Empecé en el departamento de pintura de la Academia de Arte Rietveld, pero durante mi primer año luché por encontrar un camino personal para expresarme.

Al final del año, me pasé a la fotografía. Mi interés siempre ha estado en las personas, así que la elección del retrato fue natural. Experimenté con diferentes materiales fotográficos y me enamoré de la Polaroid por sus colores encantadores.

Creo que la pasión por ciertos colores se desarrolló durante mi último año de estudios, así como el interés por las partes desnudas del cuerpo. Después de licenciarme, empecé a centrarme en detalles pequeños como los lunares o las pequeñas marcas en la piel: junto con esa tonalidad de la porcelana, muestran una gran belleza. Ever since I was little, I’ve been looking at paintings, as well as drawing portraits myself. The love of art in general, and of painting in particular, has been very strong from my earliest childhood onwards. I started out in the painting department of the Rietveld Art Academy, but during my first year I struggled to find a personal way of expressing myself. By the end of the year, I switched to photography. My interest had always been in people, so portraits were a natural choice. I experimented with different photographic materials and fell in love with Polaroid for its bewitching colours.

I think the passion for certain colours developed during the last year of my studies, as did my interest in nude parts of the body as a subject. After graduating, I started to focus more on tiny details like moles or small marks on the skin: together with that porcelain colour, they show great beauty. It’s this beauty, specifically the beauty of women, that I want to show in my work.

Those small details that make a woman who she is – sometimes small marks of time or emotion – are often overlooked, considered unimportant, or worse, retouched with Photoshop, edited out.

There is a strong connection between my work and painting, especially if you look at the painters of the 16th and 17th centuries. The paradisiacal natural light of Vermeer and Rembrandt is a great inspiration, as is the white porcelain skin in Van Eijck’s portraits of women. Cranach and Botticelli painted amazingly beautiful and sensual nudes, and in Caravaggio, you can see that just choosing a model is already an art in itself.

I feel that my passion for all of these painters is reflected in my own work.

Besides these painters, I am also fascinated by 19th century photography: the beginning of a new era of depicting people and things. People, photographers included, still saw the world through paintings and gravures. So the nudes from this period have this strong and very direct relation to painting. The poses for instance, often very simple, with a certain elegance to them, had been used for many centuries by painters.

Beautiful things like these inspire me in creating my own photos and motivate me time and again to show my viewers the true beauty of women, to draw their attention to what they usually take for granted.

Abandon

En mi serie Abandon elegí aproximarme de una forma moderna a un tema clásico, adaptando el medio fotográfico para que se adecuara a mi visión. Traté cada fotografía como si fuera una obra maestra del Renacimiento: mi uso de la composición, la luz y el simbolismo es muy intencionado. Me centré primero en las naturalezas muertas, todas situadas en la misma localización en Santa Bárbara. Construí un precario escenario con cada uno de los elementos deliberadamente seleccionado, colocado y escondido. Moví Ias briznas de hierba, e incluso coloqué gotitas de leche para crear una imagen que es a la vez evocadora y pictórica.

Traté las piezas que siguieron como si fueran también naturalezas muertas. Cada una de ellas vino a tratar sobre el descubrimiento de objetos escondidos y los significados interrelacionados de sexualidad, vulnerabilidad e indiferencia –todos con un destello de humor negro. Momentos irrevocables en el tiempo, la luz y el aliento.

Tomadas con una cámara de gran formato, la larga exposición permitió una combinación que jugaba con el detalle y la suavidad de los elementos en la fotografía. En los desnudos, cada persona se convierte en un personaje que reacciona al bodegón construido a su alrededor e inspirado en ellos. Intencionadamente usé personas con cuerpos rubensianos que no eran modelos y el desnudo frontal. Si las juzgamos siguiendo el lenguaje visual actual, estamos menos inclinados a entender y a que nos atraigan estas cosas. Estas fotografías piden al espectador que se enfrente a ellas y las explore como si fueran bellas pinturas. A primera vista, estas imágenes parecen pinturas en las que el espectador puede encontrar seguridad. Nada se ha dejado al azar. Todo es deliberado. Mi deseo es engañar al espectador para que crea que ha echado un vistazo a un momento humano visceral, no dejándoles que sepan que todo es un escenario o un elemento de atrezo estratégicamente colocado.

In my Abandon series I took a modern approach to classic subject matter, adapting the medium of photography to match my vision. I treated each photograph as if it were a Renaissance masterpiece: there was full intent in my use of composition, light and symbolism. The still life images were my first endeavor, all built in the same location in Santa Barbara. I constructed a precarious set with every disparate item deliberately selected, placed, and hidden.

I moved individual blades of grass, and even placed droplets of milk to create an image that is both evocative and painterly.

I treated each piece that followed as if it were also a still life. Each became about the discovery of hidden objects and the intertwined meanings of sexuality, vulnerability, and disregard – all with a glint of dark humor. Irrevocable moments in time, light, and breath.

Shot with a large format camera, the long exposure allowed for a combination of play between sharp detail and the soft of elements in the photograph. In the nudes, each person becomes a character reacting to the still life built around them and inspired by them. I intentionally used non-models with Rubenesque bodies and full frontal nudity. Gauged by today’s visual language, we are less inclined to understand and be drawn to these things. These photographs implore the viewer to confront and explore as we would a beautiful painting. On first glance, these photographs initially appear to be paintings in which the viewer can find safety. Nothing is by chance. Everything is deliberate.

My desire is to flawlessly trick the viewer into believing they've caught a glimpse of a visceral human moment, not allowing them to know that everything is a set or prop, strategically placed.

Julia Margaret Cameron. Calcuta, India, 1815-Sri Lanka, 1879. A los 48 años, un inusitado regalo cambió su vida: una cámara de fotos. Lo que entonces comenzó como un pasatiempo pronto se convirtió en una ocupación a tiempo completo. Sus fotografías –retratos y alegorías en su mayoría– no se sometían a las convenciones del momento: a Cameron no le interesaba la perfección técnica (tampoco pudo acceder a ella, fue una autodidacta), ni tampoco el verismo en los detalles, sino que quería captar la esencia de sus retratados, sus emociones y su personalidad. Creó con ello un nuevo tipo de verdad fotográfica. Hoy está considerada como una de las más grandes fotógrafas victorianas.

Toni Catany. Llucmajor, Mallorca (España), 1942. De formación autodidacta, sus obras revelan un fuerte interés por las vertientes más esteticistas de la historia de la fotografía, así como por los recursos técnicos más artesanales del medio, como el calotipo o la polaroid transportada. Entre sus temas

más recurrentes sobresalen sus bodegones, desnudos, y retratos. Destaca por un perfecto dominio de las luces y las sombras de la composición. Alvin Langdon Coburn. Boston, EE.UU., 1882-Rhos-on-Sea, Reino Unido, 1966. Fue fotógrafo amateur hasta que, por influencia de Steichen, decidió dedicarse a la fotografía profesional. Abrió un estudio en Nueva York.

Durante aquella época Langdon Coburn realizó numerosas vistas de la ciudad, captaba fragmentos de edificios y creaba perspectivas distorsionadas e imágenes abstractas. En Londres se dedicó al retrato de celebridades.

Participó en movimientos como la Photo-Secession y el vorticismo. Este último, atacaba el sentimentalismo decimonónico en pro de imágenes más violentas, exaltaba la iconografía de la máquina, de la energía, y las composiciones de planos contrapuestos, de líneas angulosas, que como resultado tenían siempre imágenes despersonalizadas y abstractas.

Marie Cosindas. Formada en pintura en la Boston Museum School, durante los inicios de la década de los 60, realiza diversos talleres de fotografía con maestros como Ansel Adams o Minor White. Su obra es uno de los mejores exponentes de la fotografía experimental en color de los 60. En un momento en que el gusto estético prefería la fotografía de calle, la artista demostró un marcado interés por el romance, la opulencia del retrato victoriano y las pinturas de bodegones. Gregory Crewdson. Brooklyn (EE.UU.), 1962. Frank Eugene. Nueva York, EE.UU.,1865-Múnich, Alemania,1936.

Fotógrafo pictorialista, en su juventud vivió en Münich donde estudió arte y pronto se convirtió en un reputado retratista. En torno a 1885 comenzó a hacer fotografías. Su bagaje pictórico y su destreza técnica se evidenciaban en sus fotografías que encajaban a la perfección con las ambiciones artísticas de la Photo-Secession, grupo al que perteneció. Dominaba la técnica de la goma bicromatada y los autocromos. Sus fotografías aparecieron en Camera Work y Camera Notes, entre otras prestigiosas revistas.

Edgar Degas. París (Francia), 1834-1917. Pocos artistas han sido tan contradictorios como Degas: expuso con los impresionistas y criticó sus principios básicos; se inspiró en el arte de los grandes maestros a la vez que creó obras en consonancia con la modernidad; fue defensor de la línea y el dibujo pero considerado como uno de los mejores coloristas del momento. Pintor aficionado y fotógrafo, miembro de la Societé Française de Photographie, del Photo-Club de París y de la Royal Photographic Society. Articulista, crítico y profesor fue un defensor apasionado del Pictorialismo tanto en la teoría como en la práctica. Gracias a su actividad, la impresión a goma logró sus más altas cotas de perfección y se convirtió en la técnica pictorialista por excelencia. Sus fotografías concentran todo el protagonismo en el sujeto, se busca su ennoblecimiento.

Desiree Dolron. Haarlem (Holanda), 1963. Comenzó a trabajar en los años 90, alternando la fotografía documental y la de carácter artístico e interesándose por todo aquello relacionado con el rito y el misterio, de lo que son claros ejemplos las imágenes de su reportaje sobre India, Exaltation, o las de hombres, mujeres y niños sumergidos en un medio que recuerda al líquido amniótico de Gaze. Su serie Xteriors se inspira en la pintura de los primitivos flamencos y los románticos alemanes, consiguiendo su especial atmósfera a través del retoque digital. Su trayectoria fotográfica comenzó en el Pictorialismo. En 1903 fue admitido en la hermandad Linked Ring, y siete años más tarde su obra formó parte de la exposición de fotografía pictorialista organizada por Alfred Stieglitz en la Albright Art Gallery, Buffalo. Roger Fenton. Lancashire, Reino Unido, 1819-Tunbridge Wells, Reino Unido, 1869. Fue uno de los pioneros de la fotografía. En 1851, Fenton viajó a París y quedó maravillado con la técnica del daguerrotipo. Sin embargo, para sus trabajos, utilizaba calotipos ya que con ellos conseguía una mayor calidad gráfica. En 1853 fundó la Photographic Society e inició una exitosa carrera que le proporcionaría trabajos como fotografiar a la familia real británica, las colecciones del British Museum, y tomar las primeras imágenes fotográficas del Kremlin. Vicenzo Galdi. Nápoles, Italia, 1871-Roma, Italia, 1961. Modelo, se sospecha que amante, y ayudante del fotógrafo Giuglielmo von Plüshow. Fundó su propio estudio en Roma en la primera década del siglo XX hasta que la policía cerró el de su maestro acusándolo de pornógrafo. Se dedicó principalmente al desnudo, tanto masculino como femenino, que situaba siempre en ambientes clásicos. Aunque mucho más explícitas que las de Von Plüschow o Wilhelm von Gloeden, algunas de sus imágenes han sido erróneamente atribuidas a estos fotógrafos.

Pierre Gonnord. Cholet (Francia), 1963. Su trabajo huye de la extravagancia y la artificialidad de muchas tendencias de la fotografía contemporánea para centrarse en la realización de retratos de carácter psicológico de individuos anónimos. La ausencia de elementos de identificación espacial, así como la utilización de fondos neutros, podría hacer pensar en retratos fríos y distantes, sin embargo, su capacidad de selección de los retratados, se convierte en su principal aliada. Fotógrafo cuya actividad principal se desarrolla en el sudeste asiático, acompañando a expediciones científicas y haciendo algunas de las primeras fotografías que se conservan hoy de las ruinas de Angkor. A pesar de morir joven cuenta con un extenso repertorio de arquitecturas, paisajes y retratos etnográficos de las gentes, lugares y formas de vida que encontraba en sus viajes. Su obra constituye una fuente de documentación gráfica excepcional, no sólo por la variedad y el exotismo de sus fotografías, sino también por su calidad y su carácter altamente artístico.

Bill Henson. Merlbourne (Australia), 1955. Comenzó su carrera en los años 70 y ya desde esa década los protagonistas de sus fotografías han sido siempre adolescentes. Crea imágenes profundamente escenificadas en ambientes misteriosos a través del uso de una iluminación sombría que recuerda al claroscuro caravaggiesco. Fred Holland Day. Norwood (EE.UU.), 1864-1933. Fue uno de los fotógrafos más reconocidos del cambio de siglo y una figura fundamental en el establecimiento del movimiento esteticista y del Arts & Crafts en Estados Unidos, no sólo a través de sus fotografías sino también de su trabajo como editor en Copeland & Day. Entre su obra destacan las imágenes de adolescentes desnudos que recrean mitos clásicos, muy polémicas en su época por su homoerotismo, los retratos de afroamericanos y su escenificación de la Pasión de Cristo. Se implico incluso en el desarrollo de nuevas herramientas ópticas y promovió a fotógrafos más jóvenes que él.

Rita Magalhães. Oporto (Portugal), 1974. En sus imágenes se aprecia una voluntad de apropiación de formas externas heredadas de clásicos de la pintura, desde las escenas de interior de Vermeer y otros artistas holandeses de los siglos XVII y XVIII hasta la sensual carnalidad de Caravaggio pasando por los paisajistas del primer romanticismo británico. En sus series más recientes, se inspira en los grabados japoneses y en la estética prerrafaelita. La historia del arte le proporciona el material para sus ficciones fotográficas. Tom Hunter. Bournemouth, Dorset (Gran Bretaña), 1965. Desde el punto de vista formal, su fotografía revela un meditado estudio compositivo que presenta continuas referencias a los esquemas iconográficos de las grandes obras de la Historia del Arte. Ha abordado una enorme variedad de sujetos que le ha llevado de la crítica política a la autobiografía, el paisaje, o el retrato anecdótico. En 1988, recibe el Kobal Photographic Portrait Award de la National Portrait Gallery de Londres. Animadas a través de la iluminación, dispersa tintas en el líquido y las atmósferas flotantes que resultan son rápidamente fotografiadas. Estas imágenes remiten a la tradición pictórica del paisaje, la fotografía decimonónica del Oeste Americano, así como al romanticismo de Friedrich y la escuela del río Hudson. Rudolf Koppitz. Schreiberseifen, Austria, 1884-Viena, Austria, 1936. Fue uno de los fotógrafos fundamentales en la transición del Pictorialismo a la Nueva Objetividad. Influido por el Simbolismo y el Jugendstil, sus imágenes destacan por un uso consciente del contraste entre luces y sombras y de las formas curvas, sobre todo en sus desnudos y estudios de danza. Su dominio de las técnicas de impresión le permitió entrar como profesor en el Graphische Lehr und Versuchsanstalt de Viena. En los últimos años de su vida su fotografía empezó a tratar asuntos de carácter patriótico muy relacionados con la situación política austriaca de aquellos años.

Laszlo Layton. Phoenix (EE.UU.), 1959. La fascinación de este artista por los métodos originales de producción manual de fotografías, le llevó a investigar el trabajo del movimiento pictorialista y la Photo-Secession. Usando el mismo equipo que algunos de los fotógrafos que le inspiraron, llevó su interés en la técnica a un tema que le había fascinado en su juventud: la zoología. La combinación de estos elementos produce impresiones fotográficas que recuerdan las tempranas ilustraciones de historia natural. Las imágenes finales sintetizan el antiguo fotograbado con las nuevas tecnologías.

Edouard Levé. Neully su Seine, Francia, 1965-París, Francia, 2007.

Durante más de una década compaginó su trabajo de escritor con la fotografía. En sus instantáneas se revela esta doble dedicación en un gusto por la escenificación y las poses forzadas y en sus interés por los juegos con el lenguaje, como sucede en Homonymes, retratos de personas anónimas cuyo nombre coincide con el de alguien famoso, o en L'Angoisse, la angustia pero también el nombre de un pueblo francés. Sally Mann. Lexington (EE.UU.), 1951. Su trabajo fotográfico más conocido gira en torno al crecimiento, la infancia y pubertad de sus hijos. Aunque sus series siguientes (Mother Land y Deep South) tratan del paisaje de su tierra natal, los retratos de su familia (Immediate Family), realizados entre los años 80 y 90, han definido su trabajo, y le han valido diversos juicios por atentado a la moral. En Last Measure (2000-2002), Sally Mann reincide en la mirada pictorialista sobre el paisaje, pero en esta ocasión combinando recuerdos de lugares y escenarios de la Guerra Civil Americana. Shinichi Maruyama. Nagano (Japón), 1968. Into the Spiti Valley es un trabajo documental sobre la cultura tibetana en India. Los siguientes trabajos han sido influidos fuertemente por los ideales japoneses de belleza. Entre sus series fotográficas se encuentran: Kusho, pinceladas caligráficas Zen en el espacio vacío que se capturan en el momento de su formación, reflejando la naturaleza transitoria de la vida. Nihonga combina antiguas pinturas a través de la aplicación de modernas técnicas fotográficas para crear nuevas composiciones. El característico estilo de sus fotografías, producido por su utilización del proceso de cuatricromía Fresson, la ha convertido en una de las fotógrafas comerciales y de moda más personales de las últimas décadas. Ha tratado asuntos muy diversos desde los entrañables retratos que tomó de sus hijos hasta sensuales desnudos femeninos que en ocasiones recuerdan a los realizados por Man Ray, al que admira y sobre el que produjo y dirigió un cortometraje. Su monografía Objects of Desire ganó el Ansel Adams Award concedido por la American Society of Magazine Photographers. Ha publicado también Color (Twin Palms Publishers, 1991).

Barón Adolf de Meyer. París, Francia, 1868-Hollywood, EE.UU., 1949. Es considerado uno de los primeros fotógrafos de moda. Casado con la modelo Olga Caracciolo, hija ilegítima del Príncipe de Gales, perteneció al selecto círculo de celebridades a las que retrataba. La I Guerra Mundial acabó con su fortuna familiar y el matrimonio se vio obligado a exiliarse a los EE.UU. Sus relaciones sociales le llevaron a convertirse en el fotógrafo principal de publicaciones como Vogue o Vanity Fair. Proveniente de la corriente pictorialista, el uso de focos de luz difusos, las atmósferas de irrealidad, la exaltación de la belleza y la elegancia caracterizaban su obra.

Gabriele Münter. Berlín, Alemania, 1877-Murnau, Alemania, 1962.

Pintora co-fundadora de Der Blaue Reiter junto a Wassily Kandinsky y Franz Marc. A pesar de participar plenamente en los estilos más vanguardistas del momento, Münter nunca quiso renunciar del todo al lenguaje figurativo en sus obras. Sus paisajes y retratos huyen de lo anecdótico y

hacen uso del lenguaje expresionista que, con sus cuadros, ayudó a desarrollar: colores saturados y brillantes, formas punzantes, figuras fuertemente contorneadas con negro, etc.

explorar las posibilidades de la fotografía aérea. Poco después de la II Guerra Mundial, le nombraron director del departamento de fotografía del MoMA, desde donde organizó la exposición The Family of Man en 1955.

Youssef Nabil. El Cairo (Egipto), 1972. Comenzó su carrera en 1992, tomando imágenes de sus amigos en actitudes que desprendían soledad y erotismo. Estas primeras fotografías, en blanco y negro, eran pintadas a mano siguiendo una antigua técnica popular en El Cairo y se inspiraban en los antiguos carteles de cine egipcio. Entre sus últimos proyectos destacan sus autorretratos y la serie de retratos dedicada a mujeres artistas. La elección de los temas, el uso del color y su puesta en escena remiten a algunas de las estrategias utilizadas por los pictorialistas. Anoek Steketee. Hoorn (Holanda), 1974. Empezó a trabajar como fotógrafa freelance al mismo tiempo que desarrollaba sus proyectos personales.

Entre estos se encuentran las series Dreamcities sobre parques de atracciones, y Frontstage, en la que el tratamiento de la luz convierte a sus personajes, habitantes corrientes de Teherán, en protagonistas de lo que parecen, aunque no son, tableaux vivants muy elaborados. Su trabajo pretende retratar el paisaje social de los países de Oriente Próximo y el modo en el que la cultura islámica afecta a los individuos que los pueblan. Está representada por Galerie Gabriel Rolt, Amsterdam.

Carla van de Puttelaar. Zaandam (Holanda), 1967. Su obra muestra influencias de la edad de oro de la pintura alemana y flamenca en la composición, el uso de la iluminación y las texturas. Sus fotografías fragmentan el cuerpo femenino para destacar los pequeños detalles de la piel: manchas, cicatrices, lunares, que son tachados habitualmente de imperfecciones pero a los que ella dota de gran belleza y descubre como marcas identitarias y, por tanto, diferenciadoras. Alfred Stieglitz. Hoboken, EE.UU., 1864-Nueva York, EE.UU., 1946. Su interés por la fotografía se centró en un principio en su aspecto científico y funcional, lo que le llevó a estudiar en Berlín ingeniería y fotoquímica. A su regreso a Nueva York, en 1890, perfeccionó e inventó nuevos métodos de exposición y revelado. En 1902 creó el grupo Photo-Secession. Fue el fundador de las revistas Camera Notes y Camera Work. En 1905 abrió la 291 Gallery, donde presentó a los norteamericanos la vanguardia europea. En 1924 el MET de Nueva York adquirió parte de sus fotografías, lo que constituyó un importante paso para que la fotografía fuese considerada arte.

Oscar Gustave Rejlander. Suecia, 1817-Londres, Reino Unido, 1875. Se le considera, junto con Henry Peach Robinson, uno de los precursores del fotomontaje al superponer varios negativos para crear una misma imagen.

También jugó con la luz -reduciendo los tiempos de exposición-, con las texturas y con las composiciones. La creatividad y la experimentación marcan su obra. Sobresalen sus retratos y las ilustraciones para libros. También trabajó la alegoría, género polémico por los desnudos que introducía y que la sociedad victoriana admitía en pintura y escultura, pero nunca en un arte tan cercano a la realidad y explícito como era la fotografía.

Baron Franz von Stillfried-Ratenicz. Austria, 1837-1916. Fue el hermano mayor de Raimund von Stillfried que creó un reconocido estudio de fotografía en Yokohama. Tan solo unos meses después de la fundación de éste, Franz abrió el suyo propio bajo el nombre de Baron Stillfried, lo que conllevó fricciones con su hermano. Se vio afectado por la competencia de fotógrafos locales. En su trabajo se observan las enseñanzas de su hermano Raimund, si bien sus estampas transmiten una mayor dulzura y sensualidad, así como un mayor carácter innovador en las poses de los retratados.

Guido Rey. Turín (Italia), 1861-1935. Fue uno de los fotógrafos italianos más renombrados de su época. Defensor a ultranza de la fotografía como arte noble capaz de alcanzar las más altas cotas de belleza. Su actividad se inicia hacia 1880, documentando expediciones de montaña. Hacia 1895, Rey dio un giro a su carrera y realizó fotografías inspiradas en las composiciones clásicas de Grecia y Roma. Posteriormente, empezó a crear imágenes basadas en las obras de los maestros flamencos. En 1908 Stieglitz se interesó por su trabajo y lo mostró en Camera Work.

Henry Peach Robinson. Ludlow, Shropshire (Reino Unido), 1830-1901.

Con el fotomontaje, técnica que caracterizaba su obra, pretendía suplir ciertas limitaciones que encontraba en la fotografía, sobre todo de movilidad y composición. La estética prerrafaelita, la obra de Turner y la fotografía naturalista de Henry Emerson son influencias que se dejan ver en sus imágenes, especialmente en los paisajes. Aún cuando, tras intoxicarse en el laboratorio, se vio obligado a dejar la fotografía como práctica, continuó su labor como teórico publicando ensayos tan influyentes como Pictorial Effect in Photography. Participó en la fundación de la Photographic Society inglesa.

Edward Steichen. Luxemburgo, 1879-West Redding, EE.UU., 1973.

Creador, junto a Stieglitz y Coburn, del grupo Photo-Secession, Steichen es uno de los fundadores de la fotografía moderna y uno de los grandes valedores de su consideración como una más de las disciplinas artísticas. Ocupó el cargo de director de fotografía de Condé Nast. Fue también uno de los primeros fotógrafos estadounidenses en experimentar con el color y en

Jeff Wall. Vancouver (Canadá), 1946. Ha desarrollado una intensa trayectoria como ensayista y teórico de la fotografía al tiempo que una prestigiosa carrera como docente. Su obra ha explorado muy diversos temas, como la violencia, el racismo, la pobreza, los conflictos de clase y género, la memoria,... Sus cajas de luz y fotografías escenificadas han sido objeto de multitud de exposiciones, destacando las realizadas en Documenta X, Kassel, 2002; Schaulager, Basilea, y Tate Modern, Londres, ambas en 2005; MoMA, Nueva York, 2006; y SFMOMA, San Francisco, 2007.

Liu Zheng. Wuqiang County (China), 1969. En 1994 comenzó a trabajar en su proyecto fotográfico The Chinese, que representaba a los habitantes de un país en continuo cambio, concentrándose en el lado oscuro de su psicología. Las siguientes series se alejan del género documental y van hacia imágenes donde lo principal son las ficciones escenificadas, tales como Peking Opera y Three Beauties. Su obra ha sido incluida en las siguientes exposiciones: The First ICP Triennial of Photography and Video, 2003; Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Alemania, 2004; y la XL Bienal de Venecia, 2003.

Participante del nuevo "arte para las masas" que proliferó durante la era de Weimar, Zille era conocido principalmente como ilustrador. Fue el primero en retratar el desesperado ambiente social de Berlín, superpoblado por emigrantes rurales que pretendían escapar de la pobreza en la metrópolis. Jeff Bark. Minnesota (USA), 1963. His career as a photographer began in fashion, but the lack of creative possibilities it offered led Bark to turn to art photography instead. The relationship between painting and photography is reconsidered in elaborate tableaux which present dense pictorial allegories where the influence of Dutch and Renaissance masters is evident. Series include Abandon, urban interiors whose inhabitants present varying kinds of hermetic indolence, and Woodpecker, naturalistic outdoor scenes whose characters hint at the isolation of contemporary life.

He is represented by Michael Hoppen Gallery, London. www.jeffbark.com Elina Brotherus. Helsinki (Finland), 1972. Her early work aimed to attain consciousness of her own life by making self-portraits. In recent years, she has become interested in the link between the human body and landscape, in keeping with the Romantic tradition. In the series New Paintings, Brotherus used the camera to investigate the relation between painting and photography. In the titles reference well-known pictorial works. Suite Françaises explore classic photography themes and the way in which language provides order to chaos. These series are a reflection of her move to France and communicate a vision of her day-to-day routine.

Julia Margaret Cameron. Calcutta, India, 1815 – Sri Lanka, 1879. At the age of 48 an unusual gift changed her life: a camera. What began as a pastime soon became a full-time occupation. Her photographs, mostly portraits and allegories, did not follow the conventions of the time: Cameron was not interested in technical perfection (nor was this easy to achieve, for she was self-taught) or veracity of detail, but instead strove to capture the essence of her subjects, their emotions and personalities. She thus created a new type of photographic truth. She is now considered to be one of the greatest Victorian photographers.

Tony Catany. Llucmajor, Majorca (Spain), 1942. A self-taught photographer, his works reveal a strong interest in the more aestheticist aspect of the history of photography, as well as many of the medium’s technical procedures involving craftsmanship, such as the Calotype and Polaroid transfers. Outstanding among his pictures’ formal characteristics is the highly skilled use of light and shadow in the compositions. He has published numerous books, such as Flowers of Life (1990), Soñar en

dioses (1993), and Obscura Memoria (1994). In 2001, he won the Spanish National Photography Prize. In 2000 the MNAC devoted a complete retrospective exhibition to his work.

Alvin Langdon Coburn. Boston, USA, 1882 – Rhos-on-Sea, UK, 1966.

He was an amateur photographer until, influenced by Steichen, he decided to devote himself to photography professionally. He opened a studio in New York and produced views of the city, capturing fragments of buildings, creating distorted perspectives and abstract images. In London, he took up celebity portraiture. He belonged to movements such as Photo-Secession and Vorticism. The latter derided 19th century sentimentalism and advocated more violent images, exalting the iconography of the machine, energy, counterpoised planes and angular lines, which always resulted in depersonalised and abstract images.

Marie Cosindas. Boston (USA). Cosindas trained as a painter and during the early 60s she took photography workshops with masters such as Ansel Adams and Minor White. Her work is among the best exponents of the experimental colour photography of the 60s. At a time when aesthetic tastes showed a preference for street photography, she demonstrated a marked interest in romance, the opulence of Victorian portraiture and stilllife painting, with pictures that involved many props, floral arrangements, printed fabric and models in unusual poses. Her work is distinguished by the balance between detail and the warmth and the emotional intimacy of the scenes. She is represented by Robert Klein Gallery, Boston.

Gregory Crewdson. Brooklyn (USA), 1962. His work is of a narrative nature and seeks to communicate the anguish and fears of the contemporary subject. The imagery embodies certain aspects in common with psychoanalysis and the aesthetic of Lynch’s films. Formally they are highly staged compositions, dramatisations saturated with colour, in which objects and characters are representative of a very personal and repetitive symbolic vocabulary. of landscape is his overriding concern. Under the calm veneer of his rural panorama, an unsuspected undercurrent runs, whispering tales which oscillate from the sublime to the abject: sites of creative inspiration for renowned landscape painters or locations of unspeakable tragedies of war. His use of colour, the quality of the light and the subject itself lend his work a strong pictorial quality which remits the viewer to the 19th century photographic movement and Dutch landscape painting. Few artists have been as contradictory as Degas: he exhibited with the Impressionists and criticised their basic principles; he was inspired by the great masters while creating works in keeping with the modernity of his time; he championed line and drawing yet was considered one of the best colorists of the age. Even though he is recognised as an outstanding exponent of Impressionism, his predilection for the human figure – ballet dancers, bathers – and his concern with expression, movement and drawing harmonious lines and continuous contours distinguish him from the rest of his contemporaries.

Robert Demachy. St.-Germain-en-Laye, France, 1859 – Hennequeville, France, 1938. A photographer and amateur painter, member of the Societé Française de Photographie, the Photo-Club of Paris and the Royal Photographic Society. He was also an essayist, critic and teacher and he passionately advocated Pictorialsm, in theory and practice. Thanks to his activities, gum printing reached its highest levels of perfection and became the quintessential Pictorialist technique. In Demachy’s photographs the subjects are first and foremost, their ennoblement is sought. He saw photography as an ideal of beauty rather than as a reflection of reality.

Desiree Dolron. Haarlem (The Netherlands), 1963. She alternated documentary and artistic photography in the 90s, and was interested in aspects related to rites and mystery, a clear example of which are the pictures pertaining to her report on India, Exaltation, and Gaze which portrays men, women and children submerged in a medium reminiscent of amniotic liquid. Her series Xteriors is inspired by primitive Flemish painting and Romanticism, and she bestows them with a special atmosphere through digital imaging. He began his career as a pictorial photographer. In 1903 he was admitted to the Linked Ring and seven years later his work was included Stieglitz’s pictorial photography exhibition at the Albright Art Gallery. A leading innovator, Dubreuil experimented with a variety of printing techniques. He favoured the Rawlins oil process for the freedom of manipulation it offered. He began producing original images that embraced a modernist idiom, but continued to use the soft-focus technique favored by the pictorialists.

studied art and became an acclaimed portraiture artist. Around 1885 he took up photography. His pictorial knowledge and technical skills were evident in his photographs, which were in tune with the artistic ambitions of the Photo-Secession group to which he belonged. He mastered the gum bichromate process and the Autochrome. His photographs appeared in Camera Work and Camera Notes, among other prestigious journals.

Roger Fenton. Lancashire, UK, 1819 – Tunbridge Wells, UK, 1869. He was one of the pioneers of photography. In 1851, Fenton traveled to Paris and was fascinated with the Daguerreotype technique. However, for his own work he used calotypes since he achieved images with softer focus and greater graphic quality with them. In 1853 he founded the Photographic Society and began a successful but short career that was to secure him commissions such as that of photographing the British Royal Family, the collections of the British Museum and the first photographs of the Kremlin. He is currently recognised above all for his series on the Crimean war, one of the first photojournalistic stories on the subject.

Vicenio Galdi. Naples, Italy, 1871 – Rome, Italy, 1961. Model, assistant and possibly lover of the photographer Giuglielmo von Plüshow. He opened his own studio in Rome until the police closed down that of his master, accusing him of being a pornographer. He mainly made nudes which he always placed in classical atmospheres. Though much more explicit than those of von Plüschow or von Gloeden, some of his pictures have erroneously been attributed to these photographers.

Pierre Gonnord. Cholet (France), 1963. Through his work he shies away from the extravagance and artificiality of many trends of contemporary photography in order to focus on making psychological portraits of individuals who are either anonymous or identified solely by their first names. One might think that the absence of elements of spatial identification, in addition to the use of neutral backgrounds would give rise to distant portraits, yet his capacity to select his subjects becomes his principal virtue. Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, France, 1838 – Saigon, Vietnam, 1879. This photographer worked mostly in Southeast Asia, accompanying scientific expeditions and making some of the earliest photographs, conserved to this day, of the ruins of Angkor. Despite having died young, his is an extensive repertoire of pictures of architecture and landscape and ethnographic portraits of the people, places and lifestyles he encountered on his travels. His work embodies an exceptional source of graphic documentation, not only for the variety and exoticism of his photographs, but also for their quality and highly artistic nature.

Tamotsu Enami. Tokyo (Japan), 1859 – 1929. A renowned studio photographer during the Meiji and Taisho eras, Enami was a dynamic businessman. His work was published internationally and strongly influenced how the country was perceived abroad. Early photographs reflected the stiffness and formality found in the majority of posed studio and outdoor studies at the time, but in later work Enami freed himself from governing conventions, capturing subject in more naturalistic poses and settings or engaged in everyday activities. www.t-enami.org

Bill Henson. Merlbourne (Australia), 1955. His career began in the 70s and since then the main subjects of his photographs have been adolescents. He creates elaborate settings in mysterious environments through the use of gloomy lighting that is reminiscent of Caravaggiesque chiaroscuro. He is interested in transitional moments and the idea of indefiniteness. He represented his country at the 1995 Venice Biennale and in 2005 the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney devoted a retrospective to his work.

establishment of the aestheticist and Arts & Crafts movement in the USA, not only through his photographs but also through his work as publisher at Copeland & Day. His artwork includes outstanding pictures of nude adolescents in recreations of classic myths, which were very controversial in their day because of their homoeroticism; portraits of Afro-Americans; and his staging of the Passion of Christ. He was also an enthusiastic advocate of the artistic nature of photography, involving himself in the development of new optical tools, and promoting younger photographers.

appreciate the appropriation of external forms inherited from classic paintings, from interior scenes by Vermeer and other 17th and 18th century Dutch artists to the sensuous carnality of Caravaggio and the landscape artists akin to early British Romanticism. Recent series are inspired by Japanese prints and the pre-Raphaelite aesthetic. The history of art provides her with material for her photographic fictions. Her work can often be seen in group shows focusing on contemporary Portuguese art.

Tom Hunter. Bournemouth (UK), 1965. From a formal point a view, his photography reveals studied compositions comprising continual references to the iconographic schemes of the great works of the history of art. The artist has addressed a wide variety of subjects ranging from political criticism to autobiography, landscape, and anecdotal portraiture. In 1988 he won the Kobal Photographic Portrait Award from the National Portrait Gallery, London. Sally Mann. Lexington (USA), 1951. Her best-known work depicts the growth, childhood and puberty of her children. Though her later series (Mother Land and Deep South) focus on the landscape of her homeland, her family portraits (Immediate Family) made during the 80s and 90s, have defined her work, and caused her several court cases for accusations of affronting morality. In Last Measure (2000-2002), Sally Mann reconsiders the pictorial view of landscape, but this time combining memories of places and settings of the American Civil War. She is represented by Gagosian Gallery, New York.

Kim Keever. New York (USA), 1955. The unusual method used in the production of Keever’s images imbues them with an ethereal and dreamlike quality. Miniature landscapes are constructed and placed in an aquarium which is subsequently filled with water. Brought to life through lighting, inks are then dispersed into the liquid and the resulting fleeting atmospheres are rapidly photographed. The photographs reference the landscape painting tradition, 19th century photography of the American west, as well as the romanticism of Friedrich and of the Hudson River School. He is represented by Kinz, Tillou + Feigen, New York.

Rudolf Koppitz. Schreiberseifen, Austria, 1884 – Vienna, Austria, 1936.

He was among the key photographers in the transition from Pictorialism to New Objectivity. Influenced by Symbolism and Jugendstil his pictures are notable for a conscious use of contrast between lights and shadows and curved forms, especially in his nudes and studies of dance. His mastery of printing techniques enabled him to secure a teaching post at the Graphische Lehr und Versuchsanstalt of Vienna. In the last years of his life his photography began to deal with patriotic issues related to the Austrian political situation at the time.

Laszlo Layton. Phoenix (USA), 1959. This artist’s fascination with the original methods for producing handmade photographic prints led him to look into the work of Pictorialist and Photo-Secessionist movements. Using the same photographic equipment as some of the photographers who inspired him, he turned his interest in technique to a subject matter which had fascinated him in his youth: zoology. The combination of these elements results in photographic prints which are reminiscent of early natural history illustrations. The final prints synthesize the old method of photogravure with new digital technologies.

Shinichi Maruyama. Nagano (Japan), 1968. His Into the Spiti Valley is a documentary project about Tibetan culture in India. Subsequent works were strongly influenced by the Japanese ideals of beauty. Photographic series include Kusho, Zen calligraphic strokes drawn in space and captured in the instant of their formation, reflecting on the transient nature of life.

Nihonga combines old paintings through the application of modern photographic techniques to create new composites. He is represented by Silverstein Photography, New York. www.shinichimaruyama.com Sheila Metzner. New York (USA), 1939. The characteristic style of her photographs, produced through her use of the Fresson four-color process, has made her one of the most individual commercial and fashion photographers of recent decades. She has addressed very diverse issues, ranging from the endearing portraits she took of her children, to the sensuous female nudes that are occasionally reminiscent of those by Man Ray, whom she admires and about whom she produced and directed a short film. Her monograph Objects of Desire won the Ansel Adams Award granted by the American Society of Magazine Photographers. She has also published Color (Twin Palm Publishers, 1991).

Baron Adolf de Meyer. Paris, France, 1868 – Hollywood, USA, 1949. He is considered to be one of the first fashion photographers. Married to the model Olga Caracciola, illegitimate daughter of the Prince of Wales, he belonged to the select circle of celebrities whom he portrayed. World War I did away with his family fortune and the couple was forced to seek exile in the US. There, he became the main photographer for publications such as Vogue and Vanity Fair. Akin to the Pictorialist trend, the use of diffuse lighting, unreal atmospheres, the exaltation of beauty and elegance became characteristics of his art.

Edouard Levé. Neully su Seine, France, 1965 – Paris, France, 2007. For more than a decade, he combined his work as a writer with photography.

In his pictures, this double dedication is revealed in a taste for staging and poses and in his interest in plays on words, as in Homonymes, portraits of anonymous characters whose names coincide with those of famous people, or in L’Angoisse, which means anguish but is also the name of a French village. Moreover, in his work one can find clear references to images from traditional iconography. He also reflected on the pictures used in the media. His work is represented by Galerie Loevenbruck, Paris.

Gabriele Münter. Berlin, Germany, 1877 – Murnau, Germany, 1962. She was a painter and co-founder of Der Blaue Reiter together with Wassily Kankinsky and Franz Marc. Despite having fully embraced the most avantgarde styles of the time, Münter never wanted to entirely renounce figurative language in her works. She avoided anecdote in her landscapes and portraits, making use of the expressionist language that she helped develop through her art: saturated bright colors, sharp forms, and figures with bold black contours.

pictures of his friends in attitudes that emanated solitude and eroticism.

These first photographs, in black and white, were hand-painted using an ancient technique that is popular in Cairo, and they were inspired by old posters of Egyptian movies. Recent projects investigate selfportraiture and portraits dedicated to women artists. His choice of themes, use of colour and manner of staging are reminiscent of some of the strategies used by the Pictorialists. Her work demonstrates influences from the golden age of German and Flemish painting in the composition, the use of lighting and the textures. Her photographs fragment the female body to highlight the small details on the skin: spots, scars, moles, which are usually depreciated as imperfections, but upon which she looks with an eye for great beauty, unveiling them as identifying and, therefore, distinctive marks. The languid poses of her models convey their fragility and delicacy. She is represented

He was a painter and photographer, and is considered, along with Henry Peach Robinson, to be among the precursors of photomontage as he superimposed various negatives to create a single image. He also played with light (by reducing exposure times), texture and composition.

Creativity and experimentation underscore his work. His portraits are particularly outstanding, as are his illustrations for books. He also made allegorical pieces, which were controversial for his insertion of nudes, which the Victorian society tolerated in painting and sculpture, but never in an art that depicted reality as straightforwardly as photography does.

Guido Rey. Turin (Italy), 1861 – 1935. He was among the most renowned Italian photographers of his time and a staunch supporter of photography as a noble art capable of reaching maximum levels of beauty. He initially recorded mountaineering expeditions, photographing some of the most famous peaks in the Alps. Around 1895, Rey made a turnaround in his career and started producing photographs inspired by the classic compositions of Greece and Rome. Later, he began to recreate pictures based on the works of the Flemish masters. In 1908 Stieglitz became interested in Rey’s work, ultimately reproducing it in Camera Work.

Henry Peach Robinson. Ludlow (UK), 1830 – 1901. Through photomontage, which came to characterize his work, he aimed to mitigate certain limitations he found in photography, especially those of movement and composition. The pre-Raphaelite aesthetic, the work of Turner and Henry Emerson’s naturalist photography are influences that can be discerned in his pictures, especially the landscapes. Even when he had to give up practicing photography because of intoxication in the laboratory, he continued working as a theorist, publishing essays as influential as Pictorial Effect in Photography. He helped to found the English Photographic Society.

Edward Steichen. Luxembourg, 1879 – West Redding, USA, 1973.

Along with Stieglitz and Langdon Coburn, he is one of the founders of modern photography and one of the greatest proponents of its consideration an artistic discipline. He was Director of Photography at Condé Nast and was also among the first photographers to experiment with colour and explore the possibilities of aerial photography. Soon after World War II, he was named Director of the Photography Department at

the MoMA, where he organised the The Family of Man show in 1955.

Anoek Steketee. Hoorn (The Netherlands), 1974. After studying photography, she began to work as a freelance photographer while also undertaking her personal projects. These include the series Dreamcities on amusement parks, and Frontstage, in which the lighting converts the subjects, average inhabitants of Teheran, into protagonists of what seem, though they are not, very elaborate tableaux vivants. Her work embodies an effort to portray the social landscape of the countries of the Near East and the way in which Islamic culture affects the individuals populating them. She is represented by Galerie Gabriel Rolt, Amsterdam.

Alfred Stieglitz. Hoboken, USA, 1864 – New York, USA, 1946. His interest in photography was originally based on its functional, scientific aspects, which led him to study engineering and photo-chemistry in Berlin. Upon his return to New York in 1890, he perfected and invented new methods of exposure and development. In 1902, along with Steichen and Langdon Coburn, he founded the Photo-Secession group. He was also the founder of the magazines Camera Notes (1897) and Camera Work (1903). In 1905, he opened Gallery 291, where he introduced America to the European avant-garde. In 1924, the Metropolitan Museum of New York acquired a series of his photographs, which constituted a major step toward photography being considered art.

Baron Franz von Stillfried-Ratenicz. Austria, 1837 – 1916. He was the elder brother of Raimund von Stillfried, who created a recognised photography studio in Yokohama. Just a few years after its foundation Franz opened his own studio, by the name of Baron Stillfried, which caused him trouble with his brother. The teachings of his brother Raimund can be observed in his work, albeit Franz’ colored pictures transmit greater sweetness and sensuality, as well as more innovation in the subjects’ poses, as in his images of geishas facing backwards or reflected in dressing-table mirrors.

Jeff Wall. Vancouver (Canada), 1946. He has built a solid career as and essayist and theorist on photography as well as a reputation as a prestigious teacher. Through his artwork he has explored diverse themes, such as violence, racism, poverty, class and gender conflicts, history and memory. His light boxes and staged photographs presented on transparent film have been the subject of myriad exhibitions all over the world, including those held at Documenta X, Kassel, 2002; Schaulager, Basel, and Tate Modern, London, both in 2005; MoMA, New York, 2006 and SFMoMA, San Francisco, 2007.

Liu Zheng. Wuqiang County (China), 1969. In 1994 he began work on his extensive photographic project The Chinese, which captured a people and a country in a unique time of flux, concentrating on the dark side of its psychology. Subsequent series led to work where staged fictions took the leading role, such as Peking Opera and the Three Beauties. His work has been included in the following exhibitions: The First ICP Triennial, 2003; Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Germany, in 2004; and the 50th Biennale di Venezia, Venice, 2003. He is represented by Pekin Fine Arts, Beijing.

Heinrich Zille. Radeburg, Germany, 1858 – Berlin, Germany, 1929.

Zille was known primarily as an illustrator whose witty drawings and caricatures of ordinary Berliners were published in the satirical newspapers Simplicissimus and Jugend. He was the first to portray the desperate social environment of Berlin. It was not until 1966, when photographic works were discovered among his estate, that this facet of his practice was recognised.
