avid Beckham had a childhood dream. Whenever he was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, he would say a football player. This dream, and the perseverance of striving day after day, have turned him into one of the most acclaimed, beloved and successful players in the history of the sport. He has won 115 caps for England, 59 of them as captain; 6 English Premier League titles, 2 US Major League Soccer Cups, a Spanish League and a UEFA Champions League. On the pitch he had a unique, spectacularly precise style. He was characterised by accurate passes, extraordinary shots on goal, and an accuracy that was decisive on the field, as portrayed in the film “I want to be like Beckham”. During his professional career, the player exceeded the expectations he once barely dared to imagine. REINVENTING HIMSELF One of David Beckham’s hallmarks is his tenacity. On the pitch, he never took anything for granted. Even when injured, or on loan to another team, he would train harder than anyone else. As a player, he reinvented himself in every game. So much so, that even now that he is retired from professional sport, he continues to inspire millions of young people. His philanthropic activities focus on the protection and welfare of children around the world. A UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and committed to the fight against malaria, he devotes his energy and much of his time to programmes focused on the health and education of children in Africa. In the present time, Beckham has gone one step further and has become much more than a legendary player, establishing himself as a global icon of fashion and style. He has managed to address the void that many athletes feel when their sporting career ends, becoming an icon for fashion brands and gaining millions of followers around the world through social media. GOOD TASTE David Beckham is a versatile man who stands out for his good taste. “An Englishman loves a smart suit and a nice watch. They go well together,” he has remarked on more than one occasion. A lifelong lover of wristwatches, he got to know Tudor through its sister brand, Rolex, of which he has owned several models. “I like the attention to detail,” he has commented. In 2017, Tudor launched a campaign called “Born To Dare”, highlighting the history of people who have managed to do extraordinary things on land, ice, air and underwater with a Tudor on their wrist. Not surprisingly, David Beckham became one of its ambassadors, confirming that each of his achievements has been the result of an intrepid outlook on life. Married to Victoria Beckham since 1999, father of four children, and having gone from being a sports legend to a fashion icon, Beckham is one of those people who inspire. A champion who has managed to face his fears and who has developed the ability to take chances and reinvent himself day after day.

BLACK BAY CHRONO, THE WATCH WORN BY DAVID BECKHAM True to the aesthetics of the Black Bay, the Black Bay Chrono model has adopted the signature “Snowflake” hands, one of the brand’s trademarks for diving watches since 1969, in an improved version to ensure optimum legibility of the information on its domed dial. Available in two versions, matt black or opaline, the dial, with a rounded finish, features two hollowed sub-counters in contrasting colours, matt black and opaline white respectively, for optimal legibility. Inspired by the first generation of TUDOR chronographs, it features a 45-minute counter and a date aperture at 6 o’clock. The unmistakable characteristics of the Black Bay are preserved in a 41millimetre steel case refined by the ingenious cut of the lower part of the sapphire crystal and a repositioned movement. Among its many distinctive technical features, this model is water-resistant to 200 metres (with each watch factory-tested to 625 metres) and comes with a case and bracelet in 316L stainless steel, and a movement manufactured by Tudor and certified by the COSC, boasting a 70-hour power reserve.

Kate Ozerov is a lifestyle influencer who I had the pleasure of meeting last week! She lives in London and has worked as an investment banker for 11 years before becoming a digital creator. She also has two beautiful young kids. Her blog Style’n’Snitch www.stylensnitch.com is her drawing board and a compilation of Kate’s personal style and her unique perspective on life, as a wife, mother, fashion addict and travel enthusiast. She brings a wealth of interesting ideas on how to spend time as a family and places to go, as well as always showcasing unique clothing and accessories from international designers around the world. Social media is one of the largest parts of the internet these days and millions of users have found creative ways to use it and some even managed to build a solid career path on it! Today there are many hundreds of active influencers and lifestyle creators on Instagram, Twitter and TikTok. And whilst some are more open than others, lifestyle creators tend to share certain parts of their lives that are attractive to specific demographics and their audience. They create and have powerful influence in their social communities. ABOUT HER: Kate grew up in Ukraine. In the 1980’s there was no real concept of fashion houses, nor did modelling exist as a career. The clothes were mass-produced for the sole purposes of comfort and utility, and were specially made to suit your occupation, whether it be an engineer or a school teacher. We didn’t get to choose which colours suited us best, and we certainly didn’t get to opt for the most flattering shape! “I was therefore always excited to find my mother making clothes. Somehow she managed to find foreign magazines to feed her imagination so she could design eye-catching and unique dresses (with a little help from the tailor next door). “I moved with my family to the UK in 1992, ready to embrace a new world of possibilities. Just as I had planned, I went to school, graduated and found a high-profile job in the city. Working for one of the world’s top investment banks I became well acquainted with international client relations, managing global financial institutions and cutting major investment deals. I achieved what I had set out to achieve, but my passion to create prevailed.”

“Art, design and fashion have always been at the forefront of my life – even when I was knee-deep in business deals, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have been exposed to a vast array of cultures and nations, from Mongolia to Uzbekistan. I hope I can translate all of these experiences into my blog.” “I’m also a Mum to two young children. Some days I’ll run the kids to school in flats and no make-up, before frantically dashing off to work in Central London, pulling a Superman-like outfit change en route.

On arrival, I use my six-inch heels and quickly coiffured hair to hide the evidence of my morning spent taming toddler’s tantrums.” Nowadays, it’s so easy for working women to get consumed by their jobs, their families, and life’s endless list of other responsibilities. But we ladies shouldn’t have to lose pride in our appearances to keep up. “I hope I can share with you all the tips, tricks, shortcuts and necessities I’ve found along the way that help me maintain a hectic, tiring, sometimes draining, but always fabulous lifestyle.”

ordi Cruz could be defined in many ways, but tenacity, passion and perseverance are probably the terms that best sum up his personality. Born in Manresa (Barcelona), the chef studied culinary arts at the Escuela Superior de Hostelería Joviat. He’d always known that cooking was his vocation, so at the age of 14, he started working at the restaurant Estany Clar de Cercs, Barcelona, where he received his first Michelin star in 2004, at the age of 24, becoming the youngest chef in Spain and the second youngest in the world to receive this distinction. In 2007, Cruz left Estany Clar to become the manager and head chef of Angle de Món Sant Benet, Barcelona, which was awarded a Michelin star a year later. In 2010, he joined the management of ABaC Restaurant & Hotel, an authentic gastronomic gem and one of the most exclusive establishments in the city, where he was awarded a second Michelin star in 2012, and three Repsol Suns a year later. The restaurant obtained its third Michelin star in 2017, situating it at the highest level of the Gastronomic Guide, and becoming the second restaurant in the city of Barcelona to hold such a prestigious award. Apart from his work in the kitchen and his television experience as a judge on MasterChef since 2013, Cruz is the author of six books on gastronomy. Within his profession, the coherence and his unique approach to avant-garde cuisine has continued to transcend changing fashions and trends. THE PHILOSOPHY OF ABAC RESTAURANT The concept of ABaC restaurant is based on three fundamental elements: tradition, modernity and product. As far as tradition is concerned, creativity is in their DNA. Drawing inspiration from everything that dwells in the depths of time and progressing with respect for the traditional dishes, all that is needed is attained in order to reach the point of understanding what novel really is. The restaurant’s cuisine is unpretentious yet unique, reinventing itself on a daily basis. The endless hours of burners, trials and tests serve to create something different. Although the intention is not to be unique or shine like a shooting star, what is clear is that the restaurant serves food like no other to be found anywhere else in the world. Furthermore, the concept of the restaurant focuses on the product, based on the conviction that you can only make exceptional cuisine if you use the best ingredients. Quality, freshness and natural flavours are its added values, which make for incredible gastronomic proposals, in the knowledge that local products are the best.■

SPACE AND MENU A lobby dominated by a sulphurised steel lattice screen welcomes diners, who are seated in one of the elegant lounges where order, shapes and materials have been prioritised in their meticulous decoration. Waxed oak floors with rustic grey tones; oval tables that add character and intimacy to the space; overhead and perimeter lighting that put the dish in the spotlight while providing a warm ambience. The furniture is made of spazzolato oak, and sheer satin textiles in grey tones frame the large windows that overlook the garden. A luxury of details on a par with the exquisite wine cellar and acclaimed gastronomy, with dishes such as prawn bouillabaisse infused with orange, saffron and plankton bread; clams with caviar and lime, or Lulo ceviche with oysters and pisco sour. A true delight for the senses.

he American-Israeli architect and designer Neri Oxman is a true revolutionary. Ahead of her time, her work has been said to mark a before and after in the way of understanding the world, architecture and design. But in order to appreciate how she has managed to combine design, biology, computing and materials engineering in such a prodigious way, we must go back to her beginnings. Oxman was born in Haifa, Israel. The daughter of Robert and Rivka, both architects, she spent hours in her grandmother’s garden and at her parents’ studio. As a result of this, both worlds - the natural and the man-made - merged on the same plane, planting a seed that would awaken years later, thanks to her privileged mind. She enlisted in the Israeli Air Force to serve in the military, reaching the rank of first lieutenant. Afterwards, she moved to Hebrew University’s Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem to study medicine. Two years were enough for Oxman to discover that in fact architecture was her true vocation, so she dropped out in order to enrol at the Technion in her native country, to then continue her education in London and Boston. It was in Boston that she joined the doctoral programme in architecture at MIT. Even then, her goal was clear: to delve deeper into material-sensitive design, which led her to further her career and become an associate professor at MIT. MATERIAL ECOLOGY Neri Oxman has coined the term “Material Ecology” to define her work, which places materials at the centre of her research. Her designs, inspired by nature and biology, have taken her projects to the most prestigious museums around the world, from the American MoMA to the Centre Pompidou, as well as the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Boston Museum of Science. Experts such as Andrew Bolton have described her works as “otherworldly - defined by neither time nor place”. In this context, Oxman describes the universe as a gigantic organism full of colour gradients and physical properties rather than defined boundaries. She therefore proposes the use of biological forms and textures, and includes living elements in her manufacturing processes, such as the glowing bacteria in Mushtari.

In 2013, Oxman conducted a pioneering research project, using more than 6,500 free-ranging silkworms to build a nylon-framed dome as part of the Silk Pavilion project. A year later, a water-based digital fabrication platform was included in the Ocean Pavilion, where structures were built from soluble organic fibres. And just a few months later, in the Synthetic Apiary, a study was carried out on the behaviour of bees, which unwittingly served as a source of inspiration. SCIENCES IN CORRELATION For Oxman, there should be a permanent correlation between science, engineering, design and art, so that it is unclear where one discipline ends and the other begins. With this premise, she has proposed a more significant role for architecture in society, on a par with science and engineering. Many of Oxman’s projects use 3D printing, and she is credited with developing the first equipment to produce optically transparent glass. Her research into 3D printed clothing has been

used in shows and on catwalks. The techniques are so advanced that MoMA curator Paola Antonelli has said of her, “She is a person ahead of her time, not of her time”, while editor and critic Bruce Sterling has commented that her work is “shatteringly different from anything before”. In her personal life, Neri Oxman was married to Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov, and was briefly linked to actor Brad Pitt, who is passionate about architecture, design and art. She is currently married to the American investor, Bill Ackman, with whom she has a daughter, Raika. Oxman, in her capacity as director of the Mediated Matter Group at the MIT Media Lab, continues to focus on designs that will not be implemented this year. They will not even be launched this decade. Experts predict that the projects on which the architect is working will probably reach their maximum expression in 50 years’ time. ■

NERI OXMAN L

he fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, an avid film buff, has dedicated part of his professional career to designing costumes for iconic films, and today he is the protagonist of an exhibition entitled “Cinema and Fashion. By Jean Paul Gaultier”, held at CaixaForum Madrid, and co-organised by Fundación La Caixa and La Cinémathèque Française. The exhibition proposes an eclectic journey through different genres and styles, uniting cinema and fashion in a luxurious fashion show with top designers and film stars. All from the personal vision of Gaultier who, over and above his obsession with films and fashion fetishes, reflects on the role of both industries as driving forces to transform society. CONTEMPORARY ALLUSIONS Divided into five areas, the exhibition reviews the presence of the fashion world of the silver screen, the contributions of great couturiers to film wardrobes, and the creation of male and female archetypes. The enfant terrible of fashion emphasises key aspects such as female empowerment, and pays heed to the influence of the rock, punk and queercore cultures that have had such an impact on fashion in recent years.

Centro Haeydar Aliyev

The exhibition features works by outstanding designers, such as Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Cardin and Sybilla, in addition to some 80 iconic looks from the silver screen, including dresses worn by Audrey Hepburn, Sharon Stone, Grace Kelly, Catherine Deneuve and Madonna. Gaultier also pays tribute to Spanish fashion and cinema, with allusions to the designer’s referential figures, such as Pedro Almodóvar, Rossy de Palma, Sara Montiel, Javier Bardem, Balenciaga, Paco Rabanne, and even Don Quixote. Two films take pride of place in the exhibition. The first is Falbalas, a melodrama by Jacques Becker set in the flurry of activity of a post-war couture house. This was the initiatory film discovered by Gaultier at the age of 13, and whose images he transformed into fashion designs. The designer has often commented “Without the Falbalas fashion show, I would never have gone into this business”. The second feature film is William Klein’s “Who are you, Polly Maggoo?”, a satire on the self-centred delusions of the world of haute couture. In any case, “Cinema and Fashion. By Jean Paul Gaultier” is not an exhaustive history of the relationship between fashion and cinema, but an immersion into the representations of gender roles through costumes. It features ultra-feminised Hollywood femme fatales, such as Mae West and Marilyn Monroe, in figure-hugging gowns with plunging necklines; but also the French star Brigitte Bardot, so often accused of breaching moral customs, at the forefront of simple, young, carefree ready-to-wear fashion.

AN UNMISTAKABLE STYLE The couturier’s credo has always been to sexualise bodies, feminise male silhouettes, and give prominence to powerful women, in tune with the emerging avant-garde and emancipation movements, always defending the fact that for him, there is not only one type of beauty. “In 1976, when I presented my first collection in Paris, I was considered non-conformist, far removed from the fine taste of Parisian chic. In fact, only English and Japanese journalists wrote positive reviews of my show. It’s true that I didn’t agree with the dictum that women must be hyper-feminine at any cost. What does that mean exactly? Wearing frilly or patterned dresses, with flowers, with little printed birds? Well that’s not my style!” says Gaultier. The enfant terrible of fashion was ahead of his time. He made Madonna’s dresses in the 1990s, and promoted the use of skirts for men. He also made a huge impact by featuring non-conventional models, such as older men, curvy women and tattooed models, and by playing with traditional gender roles in his fashion shows. This earned him harsh criticism, but also enormous popularity. In 2020, Gaultier gave up his catwalk career, bringing a legacy of almost five decades to an end, although the traces of his eccentric personality are not forgotten today. This fact is evident in the exhibition, which can be visited at CaixaForum Madrid until 5th June. ■ EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE |

SOFWAVE, THE SUPERB TM A BREAKTHROUGH IN ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGY FOR SKIN TIGHTENING LA NUEVA TECNOLOGÍA DE ULTRASONIDOS PARA TENSADO DE LA PIEL

L

ife expectancy has increased, we live longer and we want to do it in the best possible way. To do this, in addition to following healthy eating habits and routine physical activity according to our means, we look for a physical appearance that follows our desire to feel young. Dedicated to Aesthetic Medicine and General Surgery for almost thirty years, I have witnessed during that time an incredible technological development of equipment in the world of lasers and other energy sources to eliminate imperfections in the skin and improve its quality through procedures that are less and less invasive. For two years we have been working with the new SOFWAVE ultrasound technology. We have the only team in Spain and were the first in Europe and up to today, even with the pandemic in between, we have carried out hundreds of treatments to the great satisfaction of our patients and even greater satisfaction to ourselves.

78

| EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE

The SOFWAVE ultrasound beams are released on the skin surface by means of an applicator that contains seven transducers, which create controlled heat in the dermis between 1.5 and 2 mm. below the skin surface without damaging the skin. This is the wonderful thing about this technology, not having to interrupt the daily routine after treatment because the skin is in perfect condition. That and the fact that only one or two sessions a year are necessary make this technique currently the most advanced for treating fine lines, superficial wrinkles and sagging skin.

the skin called the epidermis. This differentiates it from previous HIFU skin tightening technologies where there may be atrophy of fat in the treatment area.

This differentiates SOFWAVE from radiofrequency technologies with needles that are more invasive as they go through the skin, generating a necessary recovery time and post treatment care. The controlled heating of the skin triggers a process that stimulates the synthesis of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, which all contribute to its improvement in terms of quality, without any secondary effect on the fat or upper part of

The treatment can be performed on any part of the face and body where you want to improve flaccidity. It is most often performed on the face, neck and inner arms. It can also be carried out locally around the eyes to lift the upper eyelids. The results can start to be seen a month after treatment and become more evident after six months, with a lifting effect seen at the end of the treatment.

The skin tightening treatment with SOFWAVE can be carried out any time of the year and the patient does not need to follow a certain pattern after it, so they can continue with their daily routines such as sports and outdoor life. Women can apply makeup immediately after the procedure if they so wish.

Bofere and seven months after a facial treatment with SofWave Antes y siete meses después de un tratamiento facial con SofWave

THE DESIGNER WHO TURNED FASHION INTO A SPECTACLE

Thierry Mugler was born in Strasbourg in 1948, and although he began his professional career as a classical dancer in the ballet corps for the Rhin Opera, at the age of 21, he moved to Paris to work as a photographer, while also designing clothes for various fashion workshops. A year later, his clothes were being sold in a small Parisian boutique, and soon after, they could be seen in large companies, although his signature was not yet on them. This was the first step towards the creation of his own label “Café de Paris”, which was inspiring due to its sophistication and extravagance, far removed from the more classical trends of the time.

M

ugler, encouraged by the most powerful fashion editorials, opened his first boutique in Paris in 1978, presenting a men’s collection characterised by stylised shapes and large shoulder pads; the prelude to presenting his first haute couture collection, and achieving worldwide fame by designing the stunning black dress worn by Demi Moore in Adrian Lyne’s film An Indecent Proposal. The dress, with its strategic cut-out design, became the most famous of the 1990s. A DARING STYLE If there is one distinguishing feature of the designer, it is his daring style and his taste for an extreme aesthetic that sculpts the shape of the female body. Mugler was inspired by the iconography of the femme fatale of classic cinema, and offered splendid headpieces and hats, elegant stilettos, and some bizarre and extremely provocative designs. Thanks to the work and grace of his needlecraft, the models were transformed into insects, comic-book dominatrixes or film noir heroines. Thierry Mugler’s fashion shows were iconic. Lasting almost an hour, when shows were typically

half an hour, they were a real extravaganza that featured the best models of the time. Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Eva Herzigova, Linda Evangelista and Kate Moss all walked the same runway together. Years later, the designer would reach millions of fans by designing the wardrobes of pop stars such as Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, who were elevated to the status of muses of female empowerment with his innovative style. But Mugler reached a point where he grew tired of always doing the same thing and, despite his success, he decided to bring to an end his time in fashion after his company was acquired by Clarins. He never stopped designing, however, and went on to design outfits for shows such as Cirque du Soleil and for cabaret performances at legendary Parisian venues such as the Moulin Rouge. INNATE CREATIVITY Mugler, enveloped in an end of an era where fashion took a turn towards minimalism, turned his attention to the Clarins perfume line, creating the design, concept and campaigns for his legendary

perfume Angel, which, in his hands, has become the brand’s most iconic and best-selling perfume in its history. In his later years, Thierry Mugler dedicated his life to photography, one of his great passions. A fan of bodybuilding and cosmetic surgery, the designer’s physical appearance bore little resemblance to his early days in the fashion world. Mugler died of natural causes on 22 January 2022. Many of the celebrities and supermodels who had worn his designs remembered him as the designer who conceived clothing as a way of playing with the female anatomy. A true spectacle in which showmanship played a role as crucial as the design itself. The models, who once saw themselves transformed into amphibians, flowers and mermaids, science fiction heroines or film noir spies through his eyes and thanks to his needlecraft, mourned his loss. Today, Thierry Mugler’s designs continue to inspire new generations in the fashion world, as they did throughout his career. “If I had a penny for every dress inspired by my designs, I’d be a multimillionaire,” the designer would say to those close to him. ■

THIERRY MUGLER

EL DISEÑADOR QUE CONVIRTIÓ LA MODA EN ESPECTÁCULO

T

Every city and property market has an area that is upwardly mobile; an established residential zone that is undergoing a revival in interest, and the urban renovation that comes with it. In the case of Marbella, it is Marbesa, and the fact that many consider it to be Marbella’s ‘Malibu’ adds further allure to one of the best investment hot spots on the coast. If Marbesa offers a very interesting proposition within the Marbella property market, then Verde Mare stands out as the finest and most stylish villa available within it right now. Being one of the trendiest modern homes on the beachside of Marbesa, set on a very private and elevated corner plot, this luxurious, modern five-bedroom, six-bathroom home measures a built space of over 580m2, with plenty of space on covered and uncovered terraces, as well as landscaped designed gardens. The villa built with outstanding taste in design by one of Marbella’s most acclaimed architects, Lis Melgarejo, integrates the exceptional architecture with the interiors, the furniture and the outdoors – all selected within a concept to provide the maximum of luxury and style by Andrea Böck from Ambience Home Design. The spectacular entrance sets the tone, providing a dramatic sense of arrival worthy of a home of this quality, particularly impressive in the evening, with subtle but effective lighting that highlights the elegant lines of the villa. Step inside and the villa abounds in light and space, offering distinct but interconnected living spaces – each with access to natural light, views of greenery and the ability to

enjoy outdoor time on its modern terraces. The home opens on to a very attractive open-plan living area in which you find the dining room, living room and a beautifully styled kitchen with direct access onto a breakfast patio. A stylish modern fireplace faces both the lounge and the kitchen area, but in winter the warmth will certainly reach the formal dining room in a property with under floor heating throughout.

eight kilometres from Marbella town centre. Marbesa is definitely one of the most fashionable beach resorts in the area, becoming an upwardly mobile area, popular with architects and renovators, with a huge increase in investment, as demand for the area and the movement of property values are growing at a quick pace. Verde Mare offers the possibility to own one of the finest modern homes in what is one of the most exciting ‘new’ property hotspots in Marbella.

The whole project was developed for the owner herself and therefore we are noticing sensational qualities and materials in a standard that is not often found in newly build projects. The villa boasts 5 spacious bedrooms. However, the exceptional 90m2 master suite on the first floor stands out, offering a beautiful bedroom, a separate large dressing room with its own terrace and a spectacular en-suite bathroom. In addition there are 2 more terraces surrounding the entire floor, highlighting a spacious covered terrace that can be used as a gym or studio.

THE ILLEGALITY OF

I

n its judgement of 27 January 2022, the Court of Justice of the EU declared the Spanish legislation that forced tax residents in Spain to declare their assets or interests located abroad using form 720 to be illegal and contrary to European Union Law. Another correction to an excessively aggressive tax policy which in this case dates back to the year 2012.

for each data item or set of data omitted, incomplete, inaccurate or false, with a minimum of €10,000, and €100 for each data item or set of data declared after the deadline or non-reported electronically. These fines, on top of the aforementioned penalty of 150%, could lead to the total amount due payment by taxpayers exceeding 100% of the value of the assets or interests abroad.

If you are a Spanish tax resident and have never had assets abroad, you won’t ever have had to submit form 720 and this judgement by the Court of Justice of the EU won’t affect you.

The Spanish legislator has violated the principle of proportionality with incomprehensible, completely unjustifiable penalties.

But if you have had or currently have assets or interests abroad you’ll be well aware that since 2012, our national tax legislation requires you to declare these assets and interests and if you haven’t done so or didn’t do so correctly or on time this will have been subject to regularisation even if they were acquired during a period for which the statute of limitations has expired, with extremely disproportionate penalties. The CJEU judgement has reprimanded the Spanish legislator as it considers Spain to have failed to comply with the obligations that apply to it pursuant to the free circulation of capital. And this non-compliance has been reiterated and abusive: Firstly, because it introduced the non-expiry of unjustified earnings and there is no equivalent of this with assets and interests located in Spain, which implies different treatment amongst Spanish residents depending on where their assets and interests are located, and this is interpreted as a dissuasive measure for investment in other Member states. Secondly, because the Spanish legislator introduced a disproportionate penaltying system. The fines of 150% established by Spanish legislation are clearly repressive. Thirdly, the CJEU rejects the fact that, in addition to the aforementioned penalty (150%), fines of €5,000 are applied

But form 720 is not going to just disappear. The European Union Court of Justice has declared the non-expiry and the penalty system to be null and void and once again, as happened with the local tax on the increased value of urban land, our legislator has surprised us with agility seen only in cases of tax collection, non-existent in all other cases, to modify specific aspects and continue collecting. Whilst the fact that the Spanish legislator is attempting is guarantee the effectiveness of the tax controls and the fight against fraud and tax evasion is praiseworthy, the methods used and the tools employed are sometimes unacceptable. The legislation, since corrected by the CJEU, is clear evidence of the breakdown of the necessary legal security, the lack of proportionality and a misunderstood eagerness to collect taxes which the judgement itself has classed as tax repression. This judgement opens the door for all taxpayers who “suffered” action by the Tax Office, through the regularisation of the assets and interests included as undeclared capital gains and who received penalties or fines, to consider the possibility of starting liability proceedings against the State to recover the amounts of the taxes or the fines and penalties paid. A grave error for which no-one has been held accountable, for which no-one is taking responsibility and for which we are all paying indirectly. ■

LA ILEGALIDAD DEL

MODELO 720 T E X T: S A N T I A G O D E L A C R U Z

E

hat impact has Covid had on the real estate market in Marbella? It may come as a surprise, but the pandemic has had a really positive impact on demand in the Marbella real estate market. You can sense it everywhere and sales have increased like never before here. Buyers are seeing Marbella as a good investment due to its focus on quality and outdoor living and its superb location. What is the main challenge for Marbella real estate right now? The biggest issue in Marbella at the moment is supply. While the demand has been so high, there are only a few new developments left that justify their price. The good news is that there is new construction under way at the moment - the number of new building permits in the province went up 12% last year - although this will take time to be ready for the market. As a result, prices have gone up a lot. A two- million-euro property is now three million euros. Client may need to raise their budgets in order to buy a decent property in Marbella.

“The dream is free. The hustle is sold separately” How would you sum up Homerun Brokers’ growth since its 2020 launch? We’ve had very strong growth, welcoming new team members and launching a rental department that has been a real success. A lot of clients who rented with us have gone on to buy or invest with us. Our overall expansion has been driven by setting out and being true to a clear brand positioning and spreading awareness of our brand and identity. All this has increased sales – in 2021 we completed 39 property sales for clients with a total value of more than 100 million euros. How have you gone about establishing your brand and getting your name known? We believe in the saying, ‘If you want to get to your goal fast, go it alone. If you want to go far, go together’. Therefore, we like to team up with other suitable partners and have enjoyed some great events since the company launched. We have hosted several padel tournaments with Beyond Padel - Padel is huge at the moment, even in Scandinavia, which is our main market.

We have also collaborated with Ascari, one of Europe’s top racing tracks, where we hosted our own Homerun racing weekend and invited our key clients. We organised a lunch at La Zagaleta clubhouse - a top location in Marbella - and the final dinner was at Mamzel restaurant, Marbella’s most fashionable night restaurant. These are all venues that complement and support our branding and identity. We have also partnered with I/O club, JCDecaux and others. What are Homerun Brokers’ plans for 2022? I believe we have managed to establish ourselves as a strong player in the industry; however there is, in fact, a lot of competition. If you snooze you lose! Therefore, there is still a lot of work to do, not only on maintaining our position but also in coming up with fresh and innovative ideas to stay ahead of the curve. With our experience we can forecast and anticipate what is coming. Last year we launched our rentals department which has been a success, reacting in part to the upward trend in digital nomads and people working more away from the office in their colder, home countries. Now we want to build on that opportunity and do more ‘buy to rent’ and ‘buy to sell’. All the indicators for the Marbella property market are good for 2022 and I think we at Homerun Brokers have positioned ourselves well to be able to deliver on our clients’ needs this year. ■

the embodiment of the Marbella spirit There are businesses that are not only located within a certain city but which actually form part of it. Founded by Javier Nieto, Pure Living is like himself born of Marbella, and interwoven with its past, present and indeed its future potential.

Javier remembers endless summers made up of sunny days spent on the beaches and other fun spots of Marbella. Skirting the Mediterranean shoreline, he and his friends would dash along the Paseo Marítimo boardwalk, play tennis at the Puente Romano Club and later join the revelry at iconic beach clubs and fish restaurants. Sometimes those friends included the likes of Enrique Iglesias, who spent the summer season here with his famous family.

asino Marbella Gastrobar continues to amaze us with its original creations, combining gastronomic trends from all over the world. Innovative cuisine with market products in a unique setting on the Costa del Sol. Now, it is setting itself apart with a new aggressive proposal for lovers of Japanese and Mediterranean food. Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) is a Japanese dish consisting of mochi dough with various ingredients cooked on a griddle, commonly called “omelette”. The word okonomiyaki is made up of the honorific O (お), konomi ( 好み taste) y yaki (焼き cooked on the grill), meaning “cooked (grilled) to your liking”. Its chef, Agustín Román, gives a twist to this traditional recipe to bring it closer to Mediterranean culture and surprises us by adding ingredients such as payoyo cheese or oxtail. An explosion of contrasts to the eye and on the palate. After tasting it, the concept we have of “Japanese omelette” will never be the same again. The menu offers the opportunity to dine more casually, but with the same quality and service as before. Fresh Mediterranean tapas, combining classic Spanish cuisine with a fusion of Hawaiian, Asian and Moroccan trends. Casino Marbella’s dining area is open daily from 8.30pm until 2.30am and offers either a group menu, tasting menu or a la carte menu. The dining experience can also be completed with table games: poker and blackjack experiences available for the more daring groups.

Do you dare to try it? ¿Te atreves a probar?

Those who study Patrick Demarchelier’s work speak of the French photographer’s incredible capacity to reflect the soul of the person in front of his lens: an instinct that became evident in the photo shoots of the models who posed for him, such as Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss or Gisele Bundchen, and that enabled him to capture some of the most iconic photos of international fashion. Demarchelier was born in Le Havre, northern France, where he lived with his mother and four brothers. As a teenager, he discovered his love of photography, which was further cultivated when he received a Kodak camera as a gift for his 17th birthday, with which he began taking pictures of friends, and working as an amateur photographer at weddings. Afterwards, he would shut himself away for hours at home, developing the photos and retouching the negatives manually. AN EXTENSIVE CAREER Self-taught, he moved to Paris in 1963, and began working as a photographer’s assistant. From the late 1970s, with a career closely linked to the world of fashion, his photographs started to appear in the most important magazines, such as Vogue, Rolling Stone, Life, Elle or Harper’s Bazaar, who made him their star lensman from 1992 to 2004. xh

In addition, he participated in advertising campaigns with major brands, such as Dior, and was the official photographer of the book “On Your Own”, in which Brooke Shields offered beauty tips to teenage girls. Demarchelier’s talent led him to photograph countless celebrities throughout his career, including singers like Madonna, as well as the most famous actors and actresses in Hollywood, such as Scarlett Johansson, Robert de Niro and Jennifer Lawrence. For many, the secret of his success lay in his ability to combine elegance and spontaneity. “I like to do the pictures before people get too self-conscious, and before the subject has a chance to think about their expressions,” he would say. Princess Diana’s personal photographer If just one photograph had to be chosen from among the most outstanding shots of Demarchelier’s career, the best-known would probably be the famous portrait of Princess Diana for Vogue magazine, which shows a smiling Diana dressed in a ball gown, but sitting on the floor hugging her knees. He also appeared as a special guest in the reality show, America’s Next Top Model. In this interview, we talk to Jason Harris, CEO and Creative Director of UDesign, about these two wins and the part UDesign played in the success of the Vista Lago Residences project. It must also be mentioned that Vista Lago Residences, developed by BRIGHT, won “Best Residential Development in the World” in this year’s awards.

the two entities were separate. We realised the importance of the interior from the very start, because people live in the inside, not the outside, so we design our houses from the inside out. We bring architecture and interior design closer together.

Jason, can you tell us why, in your opinion, Vista Lago won the award for “Best Architecture in Europe”? Well, firstly I’d like to point out that without the support, experience and know-how of Marbella-based architects González and Jacobson, we could not have done what we did. So even though we won the award, it’s just as much theirs as it is ours. The Vista Lago plot is an extremely complicated piece of land to develop and they have been instrumental in this success. And this success, I believe, is to do with the changing face of residential architecture over recent decades. Architecture is not just about buildings on the outside, it’s about the whole package, outside and in. In the past, almost everybody focussed on the exterior of the building, and that was known as architecture. The inside was left to the interior designers, as if

So is this what makes great architecture? Great architecture doesn’t have to be the Sydney Opera House or the Guggenheim Museum. It’s not just the design of an iconic building, but a great space that feels bright, inviting and comfortable. Architecture, in general, has changed direction; it’s now much more than the structure of a building from the outside, it should be just as inspiring and enjoyable on the inside – this is sensory architecture.

| EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE

Does that mean you put more thought into the interiors of your houses than the exteriors? We put an extraordinary amount of thought into every aspect of our houses, inside and out, but at a practical level, the very nature of living forces us to focus on the inside. Just think: you’re looking at

your house from the outside, and what do you see? Only part of it, a façade. But inside you’re surrounded by your house, and how it has been designed will affect your mood to a great extent. But that’s not to say that the outside is of lesser importance. Size and proportion must relate to each other too. Height can only work in relation to the rest of the space available. A high ceiling could be four metres high or ten metres high: it all depends on how big the floor space is. Function and usability is the key, and is independent of size. In the end, it all comes down to understanding how to create an enjoyable space. Do you have a standard process for designing a house? It all begins with a single room and works outwards, before you even begin to think about materials, processes and structure. And in designing each room, you first need to know what its function is going to be: who will use it, how many people will use it at one time, why will they use it, and that means both architecture and design. Design is objective in every sense of the word. You design by knowing what you’re designing for, otherwise it would all be no more than a work of subjective art that may mean something to you only. How relevant is this success in the International Property Awards to you? Look, we don’t enter competitions for the glory of winning. We’re a relatively young architectural company, and winning prestigious international awards like this is a way of promoting our work. To win the “Best Architecture in Europe” against more than 550 other developments is something to celebrate! We’re very proud of our work and we want to attract clients from all over the world. The awards are a great opportunity to show our passion and creativity. We put ourselves up against much bigger companies and won, and this is something the whole team can be proud of.

You’ve won single and multiple residence architecture awards, now what? It’s never about that you’ve accomplished, but what you have yet to accomplish. Every time you finish a project, you think immediately of how much better the next one could be. The motivation and the challenge is always to improve, although we know we can never reach perfection, we enjoy trying. What have you to say about your CGI (Computer Generated Images) award win? “Best in the World” is not too shabby... In our opinion there are companies that can create more realistic CGIs than ours, but what makes ours special is the fact that they are an exact representation of what the final design will look like. We always intended our CGIs to be more than pretty pictures whose promises could not be realised in the real world. The object of CGI is to show the client what they will have, not what we hope they will have. All the products we show in our CGIs are real and currently available or are something we know we can design and make in our own workshops. Our trademark is the quality of design matching the realism of the finished building. Even the gardens, with their natural stone, water, trees and so on, are real in every way. Our secret is we’re in-house. We do it all ourselves, and we all work well together. UDesign are an award-winning architecture and interior design company established in Marbella since 2008. HOW CAN YOU CREATE

A PERFECT ROOM

OUT OF AN IMPERFECT ONE? BY SUSANA URBANO

This leads us to the question: “ Does the perfect room exist?” Of course it does! But unfortunately there are just few of them within a home. How do we, the professional interior designers, turn these imperfect spaces into perfect ones? Here you can find some tips:

Small or tiny rooms are definitely perfect for making a statement. Wallpapers and strong colors are fantastic for this. Don’t forget to add a big mirror to create space.

Huge rooms. Work with XXL furniture pieces and enjoy the gorgeous feeling of sitting on wonderful big chairs or sofas and make the generosity of the space stand out.

Low ceilings or roofs with deep slopes. Use geometric wallpapers, lattices or other wall coverings to drive the attention to that shape making it special and non problematic.

Rooms that are too dark or lack of natural light. Create drama. Combine dark, light and bright colors in order to capture the limited amount of natural light you may have with one or various XXL mirrors.

Combine all these tips with a good lighting concept. It will be the key to creating different ambients and the key to enjoying the rooms throughout the day. I hope I have been able to help you. If not, do not hesitate to contact the studio under: www.susanaurbanointeriors susana@urbanointeriors.com www.susanaurbanointeriors.com/online-shop/ We would love to attend personally your needs.

CAROLE LOMBARD AN ACTRESS, AND ATRAGEDY IN THREE ACTS The world knew her as Carole Lombard, but her real name was Jane Peters. Born in 1908 in Indiana, USA, she grew up in Los Angeles, California, with her mother and older siblings. It was there that the film director Allan Dwan saw her playing baseball in the street with her neighbourhood friends. At the age of 12, she signed a contract for the film A Perfect Crime, which would be her debut on the big screen. T E X T: E VA D E L A M O

A

fter this first foray into the world of cinema, she continued her studies at school and doing athletics, but she dropped out at the age of 15 to pursue a career in acting. As she considered her name vulgar, she decided to adopt the name Carole, after one of her schoolmates, and Lombard as a surname, that of a friend of the family. Four years later, she was signing a contract with 20th Century Fox. THE FIRST TWIST OF FATE In 1926, the actress had to dodge fate for the first time. On her way home with her boyfriend of the time, Lombard was involved in a car accident. She was hurled against the windscreen of the car, and although she survived the accident, she had to come to terms with a deep scar on the left side of her face, which she learned to conceal for the rest of her life with make-up. While she was still recovering, Fox terminated her contract, but Paramount seized the opportunity to sign her up for seven years, making her one of the most acclaimed actresses of the era, as well as one of the best paid. She went

from earning $300 a week in the early days to 35,000 euros a week; the equivalent of half a million dollars nowadays. Along with professional success, Lombard also found love again. She met the actor William Powell on the set of Man of the World in 1931. His reserved nature and the fact that he was almost 40 years old, as opposed to her exuberant personality and her tender age of 22, did not prevent them from getting married. However, the marriage lasted only two years. Soon after, the actress fell in love with the singer Russ Columbo, unaware that tragedy was once again looming. THE SECOND TRAGEDY IN HER LIFE During a visit by the couple to their friend, Lansing Brown Jr., and while admiring his collection of antique guns, a rifle accidentally went off, hitting Columbo in the left eye, according to the official report. He died a few hours later. To overcome her grief, the actress took refuge in her work, shooting films such as My Man Godfrey, which earned her first and only Oscar nomination.

In the casting of the film Gone with the Wind, she met Clark Gable, who, despite being married, was smitten with the actress. He did not give up until she agreed to go on a date, and from that moment on they never left each other’s side. A month after Gable got his divorce, the actors were married. Apart from her beauty, talent and charisma, Carole Lombard was adored by the nation for her patriotism. The actress did not think twice when President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked her to campaign for the sale of war bonds, given that the US had plunged headlong into World War II. She gladly accepted, and on 12 January 1942, the actress and her mother Elizabeth boarded a train from Los Angeles to Indianapolis for the promotional campaign. THE THIRD AND FINAL ACT Once this commitment was over, and despite the fact that she had return train tickets, the actress decided to take a flight home. Her mother, a believer in numerology, was reluctant to fly, as she considered the number 3 as synonymous with bad luck. The plane they had to return in was a DC-3, it was flight number 3, and the actress was 33 years old. The toss of a coin would determine the fate of both women. Lombard boarded the plane with her mother, little imagining that it would be her last journey. The plane crashed in Las Vegas and there were no survivors. The world was left in shock. Clark Gable, her husband, withdrew from the cinema and decided to join the army. The actress was awarded a posthumous medal by Roosevelt, and a US ship was named after her. She never got to see her last film To Be or Not to Be become a box-office and critical success. The telegram sent to her widower by the US president summed up the sentiments of a whole nation: “Carole brought such joy to the millions of people who knew her as a great artist. She is and will always be a star, one we shall never cease to be grateful to.” ■
