A unique and unrepeatable experience Una experiencia única e irrepetible

This is our story

Michael Bormann, who has his second home and part of his business in Marbella, has always been in love with Spanish gastronomy. In fact, one of his dreams from a very young age was to have his own restaurant. He was convinced that Marbella was the place to make his dream come true. Little by little, his idea of the restaurant formed. He imagined it would be warm and cozy...traditional but with a modern touch. Simple but at the same time elaborate.

Now with a clear concept, he set about looking for a place that would be inviting and welcoming. He knew that Marbella old town was the ideal place. Many people advised him against it, but he was convinced it was there or nowhere else. What better place than Marbella’s old cobbled streets to host this traditional cuisine made with fresh products from the surrounding villages?

More than two years of searching finally paid off. In the Plaza General Chinchilla, on the corner of Calle Carmen, the premises that had been Marbella’s old telephone exchange stood empty. This was the place that connected the residents of Marbella with the rest of the world. A place full of charm and history. From its balconies you can see the Plaza de los Naranjos and the bell tower of the Iglesia de la Encarnación. To top it all off –the Calle Carmen wall, covered with beautiful geraniums.

It was time to get going. The idea of traditional gastronomy was what he had in mind and then along came “Candela”. It was the name he was looking for! It means light, fire, hearth... its where families used to meet to cook and eat together around. Candela is tradition. Candela is Spanish. Candela is very Mediterranean.

The formula worked so well that Michael decided to take his passion for the south one step further - into the “deep” of the gastronomy he loves so much: the Mediterranean. He started his career at sea himself. At the age of 16 he began working in a sailing school and after several years he took over and managed the business in Hamburg. This laid the foundation for his future ventures and the sea has always been a reference point for him. That’s why now Candela Marbella can also be enjoyed at sea. Discover the Mediterranean on our open type yacht, the elegant PrincessV58, with a length of 18 meters. Our crew will ensure that your cruise will be unforgettable. With a perfect combination of professionalism and hospitality, they are committed to making your trip an exceptional experience. From the comfort of our yacht to the exquisite gastronomy specially prepared for each occasion by our chefs.

LEONARDO DICAPRIO

The self-made actor El actor hecho a sí mismo

Leonardo DiCaprio was born in Los Angeles in 1974. His mother, Imerline, a secretary by profession, decided on her son’s name when, while pregnant with him, she felt his first kick while she was looking at a Da Vinci painting.

EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE 47

DiCaprio’s father, George, was a comic book writer, but when Leonardo began to make it in the film industry, he became his financial manager. Despite being close to his parents, Leonardo does not remember them together, as the couple separated when he was just one year old. And although DiCaprio spent much of his childhood with his mother, his parents had shared custody of him until he was emancipated.

Leonardo opted not to go to university, preferring to try his hand in the world of advertising, from which he made a timid leap into the world of television, appearing in series such as Lassie. From there he moved on to the big screen, and at just 19 years old, he made his leading role debut in the film This Boy’s Life, alongside Robert de Niro. Despite his youth, he was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Actor.

SUCCESS AFTER SUCCESS

This first film was to be followed by many others, always accompanied by big names in the industry, from The Quick and the Dead with Sharon Stone, to the curious version of Romeo + Juliet, with Claire Danes.

DiCaprio’s high point came with his performance in James Cameron’s unforgettable Titanic, with Kate Winslet. An unprecedented success in the industry, it was followed by other great films starring DiCaprio, such as Gangs of New York, directed by Martin Scorsese, and The Aviator, for which he won a Golden Globe for Best Actor.

Other films that were well received by critics and audiences alike were Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, directed by Quentin Tarantino, and The Wolf of Wall Street, where it came to light that the actor had never taken drugs and had to consult experts to understand how to play his role.

A KEEN INSTINCT

DiCaprio has been abl to prove that, despite his lack of academic training, he has a keen instinct that allows him to give incredible performances, such as the one that won him the Oscar for Best Actor in The Revenant.

In parallel with his career, the actor has had to deal with the interest his physique has always provoked, considered by his fans to be one of the most beautiful faces on celluloid. Blond, boyish, with soulful light blue eyes that are capable of oscillating, according to the demands of the script, between innocence and defiance.

PROTECTIVE OF HIS PRIVACY

Leonardo DiCaprio enjoys playing video games and table tennis. He is known to have had numerous relationships with actresses and models, including Gisele Bündchen and Bar Refaeli. The actor has a house in Los Angeles, an apartment in lower Manhattan and an island off the coast of Belize, as well as a residence in Palm Springs that he bought for more than five million dollars. Protective of his privacy, he rarely gives interviews.

EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE 49

A committed environmentalist, he chooses to lead by example, driving a hybrid electric car and has solar panels installed at his various mansions. When he received his Oscar, he already issued a stark warning about climate change. “That, and not my life, is what really matters,” he tells the press whenever he gets the chance.

In the heart of Marbella, by the sun-kissed Mediterranean, lives a power couple whose dynamic energy have left an indelible mark on the luxury real estate scene. Eric Ebbing’s journey into entrepreneurship started in Malmo, Sweden, where his love for music and hospitality laid the foundation for his ventures. He catapulted into success with the creation of “Big Slap,” Sweden’s most  renowned music festival. Fuelled by an insatiable drive, Eric developed a passion for real estate investment, paving the way for his relocation to Marbella in 2017.

In the vibrant coastal city, Eric’s vision first started with Occo, a thriving Lebanese restaurant and a sought-after hotspot, where he met Jennifer. Besides his passion into gastronomy, Eric’s expertise in property development led to the founding of Homerun Brokers in 2020, an ambitious project born amidst the challenges of the pandemic. With great determination, Eric transformed Homerun Brokers into a beacon of luxury real estate, earning its name as now one of Marbella’s top agencies.

FOLLOW THAT DREAM

Complementing Eric’s entrepreneurial success is Jennifer Rocamora, a Marbella native with a wealth of experience in Marketing and Communications. Jennifer’s global perspective was shaped by her time in London, where she honed her skills at prestigious fashion institutions. Her professional journey took her to Mexico City, where she played a pivotal role in shaping editorial content for renowned publications such as Vogue Latin America and Architectural Digest Mexico. Returning to her roots in Marbella in 2018, Jennifer seamlessly integrated her multicultural background into her role as the Head of Marketing at Homerun Brokers. Fluent in Spanish, English, and Dutch, Jennifer’s innate ability to bridge cultural divides enhances the agency’s identity, making her an invaluable asset to the company.

Homerun Brokers isn’t just another real estate agency; it’s a testament to their unwavering commitment to authenticity and quality. But Homerun Brokers isn’t just about properties; it’s a lifestyle!

They claim Marbella to be, besides Jennifer’s home town, the perfect location to live; Eric: “It has it all”. The couple enjoys a perfect balance of social and work life, a healthy lifestyle. With great opportunities for road trips with their two dogs and latest addition to the family, Nova, who they adopted from Triple A. One of their favorite getaway places is Tarifa, just an hour drive away were they celebrated their marriage two years ago. They now found their dream family home; a rustic Andalusian property built the 80’s surrounded by beautiful nature with serene landscapes.

“The aim is to create a lifestyle you fall in love with, and make a living from it.”

So, we asked what is on the horizon for them two: Jennifer: “Well, we have some exciting projects ahead, like our own Homerun Brokers Netflix show coming out this autumn and the opening of our new office in Palma de Mallorca. Eric: “That’s right. Im also opening Astoria Brasserie in Marbella this year, which is one of the bestknown restaurants in Stockholm, with Björn Frantzén himself.” Jennifer: “And besides all this, we’re also looking forward to expanding our family soon, and im not referring to more dogs!” Together: “We seem to be entering an exciting new chapter in our Marbella journey!”

DAVID OLIVAS

David Olivas, born in Úbeda (Jaén), where he began his training and working life, has developed his professional career in Marbella. A perfectionist, demanding, creative, and with his Andalusian roots as a constant source of inspiration, he has built his career as a chef in award-winning restaurants. In 2016, together with the renowned head waiter and sommelier Fabián Villar, he opened Back, a restaurant that immediately caught the attention of the public, press and critics, and where he began to receive recognition and awards. In November 2023, Back achieved its first Michelin star.

At his restaurant, Olivas gives free rein to a contemporary vision of traditional Andalusian cuisine. His proposal is based on local Andalusian produce, with a touch from other worlds.

FABIÁN VILLAR

Born in Ronda, Fabián Villar has developed both his training and career in the province of Málaga, which he has always described as “an inexhaustible source of great catering professionals”. He qualified as an Advanced Catering Technician (IES LA Rosaleda, Málaga), as a sommelier at the Hotel Escuela Bellamar (Marbella), and as an Advanced Technician in Viticulture (IES Las Viñas, Manilva). Best Sommelier of Andalusia-Malaga-Costa del Sol in 2014; 5th place in the National Sommelier Competition; Finalist for Andalusia in Nariz de Oro 2014; Best Young Sommelier in Andalusia 2011; Excellence in Training 2012.

He started out his career in his hometown of Ronda, where he joined Dani García’s El Tragabuches, and met David Olivas. From there, they all moved to Calima in Marbella, and he was soon in demand by large catering groups to set up their wine cellars and dining rooms. At the Trocadero Group, he spent years in charge of the dining room and as head of the group’s wine cellar, as well as training the sommeliers at the different restaurants. During all this time, he was in constant contact with his partner and friend David Olivas, and in 2016 they decided to join forces and talents in Back.

BACK

Since its creation at the beginning of 2016, what started out as a gastrobar or bistro has completely transformed into a creative cuisine restaurant that is one of the most outstanding on the Costa del Sol for its food, service and wine cellar.

The ENTORNO tasting menu has close associations with the people around the restaurant, to their customs. And of course, it draws on Andalusian culture, from the way things are done in this region, an inexhaustible source of riches and inspiration for Back.

Proximity and sustainability are the parameters that increasingly influence Back’s cellar, where natural and biodynamic wines have a growing presence. A constantly evolving wine cellar and elegant service make Back, along with its dishes, a benchmark for haute cuisine in the region.

ENTORNO

BACK RESTAURANT TASTING MENU

“ENTORNO” is chef David Olivas’ tribute to the creativity of Andalusian gastronomy, a reflection of the region’s cuisine. He loves the idea that through the flavours, guests will know they are in Marbella, and will recognise Malaga in every bite. In short, he wants every “ENTORNO” dish to remind them that they are in Andalusia.

Since starting out at the beginning of 2016, Back’s cuisine has been characterised by the use of eighty percent local produce. The remaining twenty percent is an open window to the world. Just as they like to see olive oil or Iberian ham beyond these borders, they also like to integrate products from other countries into their dishes.

The ENTORNO tasting menu is based on seasonality. The pairings of head waiter and sommelier Fabián Villar are based on respect for this natural wealth. He has selected wines that respect the environment, focusing on the search for quality references in organic viticulture. Ten courses, ten opportunities to travel through Andalusia and enjoy all that the land and sea have to offer. In short, ten dishes paired with wine to enjoy these surroundings.

David Olivas (Chef Back Restaurante)

Fabián Villar (Sumiller /Head Waiter Back Restaurant)

ENTORNO

MENÚ DEGUSTACIÓN BACK RESTAURANTE

NUMBER OF GUESTS: 4. TYPE: FISH

ALLERGENS: FISH, SOY, GLUTEN.

INGREDIENTS

For the fresh piparra porra:

• 150g pickled piparra

• 1 clove of peeled garlic

• ½ bunch of fresh mint

• 1 bunch of arugula

• 40g vinegar from the piparra pickling liquid

• 500g mineral water

• As needed, breadcrumbs from white bread

• 30ml lime juice and its zest

• 10ml soy sauce

• 250g mild olive oil

FOR THE SEA BASS (FISH):

• 2 whole fresh sea bass

• 100g wheat flour

• 4 liters of frying oil

• As needed, salt and pepper

For the rest of the ingredients:

• 200g fresh snow peas

• 20g flake salt

NUMBER OF GUESTS: 4. TYPE: FISH

ALLERGENS: FISH, SOY, GLUTEN.

INGREDIENTES

Para la porra fresca de piparra:

• 150gr piparra encurtida

• 1 diente de ajo pelado

• ½ manojo de hierba buena fresca

• 1 manojo de rúcula

• 40gr vinagre de las propias piparras

• 500gr agua mineral

• c/n migas de pan blanco

• 30ml zumo de lima y su ralladura

• 10ml salsa de soja

• 250gr aceite de oliva suave

PARA LA LUBINA:

• 2und lubina entera fresca

• 100gr harina de trigo

• 4 litros de aceite para fritura

• c/n sal y pimienta

Para el resto de los ingredientes:

• 200gr tirabeques frescos

• 20gr sal en escama

Let’s get started by thoroughly cleaning the piparras, removing the stems, veins, and seeds. Place the cleaned piparra flesh, garlic, mint, arugula, vinegar, water, lime zest and juice, and soy sauce in a blender and blend at maximum speed for 3 minutes. Then, reduce the speed and gradually add the mild olive oil in a thin stream to emulsify the mixture. Finish by adding breadcrumbs to achieve the desired texture, adjust seasoning as needed, strain, and reserve in the refrigerator. Meanwhile, descale and clean the sea bass, removing both fillets while leaving the skin intact. Using tweezers, remove the bones and cut into irregular rhombus shapes.

In a separate pot with boiling water, blanch the snow peas cut in half for 2 minutes, then remove and shock in ice water to stop the cooking process.

Heat frying oil to 175ºC, season the fish fillets with salt and pepper, coat with flour, and fry for approximately 4 minutes. To finish, on a flat plate with straight edges, create a thin layer of the piparra porra, then randomly place 6/7 snow pea halves on top. This will prevent the fried fish from directly touching the porra, ensuring it stays moist. Finish by placing the fish fillets on each snow pea half, and enjoy!

Amendment to the Andalusian Regulations on Tourist Accommodations

The recent Decree 31/2024 issued on 29th January has brought about significant amendments to various provisions of the preceding regulations governing tourist accommodation. Since its inception within the Andalusian Autonomous Community in 2016, this economic sector has surpassed all initial economic projections and outgrown its original regulatory structure. What was once considered a marginal tourist resource facilitated by “individual hosts” operating through collaborative social platforms has experienced

exponential growth, evolving into a mainstream form of accommodation managed by seasoned professionals overseeing properties owned by diverse individuals or major property entities.

Tourist housing and its exploitation have emerged as a multifaceted economic phenomenon in Andalusia, characterized by a nuanced and divergent impact across the region. The distinctions between provincial capitals and small municipalities, as well as between coastal tourist hubs and inland villages with lower exposure to tourism, underscore the complexity of this phenomenon. Harmonizing the diverse interests and conflicting legal frameworks, including civil regulations, housing laws, town planning regulations, and the jurisdictional powers of the State, Autonomous Communities, and Municipalities, presents a formidable challenge.

This recent amendment, implemented since late February, introduces several noteworthy changes, beginning with a shift in terminology. Formerly known as “dwellings for tourist purposes,” these accommodations are now referred to as “dwellings for tourist use.”

Without delving into the specifics of the modifications outlined in the Decree, certain key points deserve attention: Firstly, it’s essential to note that tourist accommodations are prohibited from operating within buildings or properties where the owners’ association explicitly forbids such usage or activities. This prohibition may be articulated

EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE 121

through provisions within the association’s articles or its constitutive title.

Furthermore, local councils will impose limitations on tourist housing, including restrictions on the “maximum number of dwellings per building, sector, area, period, area, or zone.” These limitations must be established based on “clear, unequivocal, and objective criteria” that are made public prior to their implementation. (It’s worth noting that while this may seem straightforward to articulate, ensuring clarity and objectivity in application can be a considerable challenge.)

Lastly, it is important to highlight that VPOs (Social or subsidized housing) are prohibited from being utilized for tourism purposes.

Tourist accommodations are no longer required to possess a First Occupancy License, a development particularly relevant given the ongoing debate, notably in Marbella. Instead, it suffices to confirm that the property is deemed suitable for use as a tourist dwelling in compliance with relevant town planning regulations or ordinances—essentially confirming alignment with zoning regulations. The Regional Administration (Andalusian Tourism) is tasked with communicating the property registration to the respective Town Halls, enabling verification of the declared information. Should any discrepancies arise or if the property fails to meet the required standards, the registration in the Andalusian Tourism Register can be revoked.

This implies that properties not compliant with zoning regulations, as well as those considered equivalent to non-compliance, are ineligible for conversion into tourist accommodation services. However, there is provision for local councils to make exceptions for properties in situations akin to non-compliance, provided they adhere to town planning and environmental regulations.

The possibility of denying stay to users who fail to comply with coexistence rules is included, with owners or operating

companies able to request the assistance of law enforcement for this purpose.

The authority of operating companies, whether individuals or legal entities, overseeing one or multiple tourist accommodations is reinforced. Additionally, entities recognized as operating companies are afforded a sixmonth window to inform the Andalusian Tourism Register of any changes in ownership regarding the management of respective tourist accommodations. In instances where the property is transferred from the owner to an operating company, said company must be registered as the operational owner in the Junta de Andalucía’s Register and consequently assume responsibility before both the administration and clientele.

Finally, updated habitability requirements are introduced, including specifications such as a minimum surface area of 14m² per bed space, provision of two bathrooms for accommodations with more than five beds, and three bathrooms for those with over eight beds. Additionally, requirements encompass direct ventilation for living areas and bedrooms, as well as either direct or forced ventilation for kitchens and bathrooms. Other mandates involve refrigeration availability from May to August and heating from December to March, excluding incandescent elements or the combustion of flammable substances. Furthermore, obligations encompass a 24-hour telephone service, cleaning upon each new user’s arrival and departure, provision of complaint forms, and furnishing users with the community’s coexistence rules where the property is situated, among other minor stipulations.

In essence, this rule represents a regulatory strengthening of a complex issue, as it consolidates various interests and divergent legal frameworks. It involves multiple levels of administration (State, Regional, and Local) intertwined with civil, housing, and town planning regulations, resulting in a general impact that is challenging to foresee.

THE GENESIS OF

ARKITECH:

A STORY OF INNOVATION AND VISION

Eduardo and David are two brothers that along with Curro shared a vision for transforming the home construction industry. Eduardo, having spent his entire life in Spain after returning from Canada at the age of 10, Curro an architect and business entrepreneur and David, who met his wife in Spain before moving to Canada in 2007 with their two children, where he was deeply involved in the construction business. It was in Canada where David witnessed the advanced acceptance of industrialized homes and their associated technologies. In 2022, he saw an opportunity to bring this innovation to Spain, leading to the inception of Arkitech.

The company was officially registered in 2022, with David shaping the business idea and its future strategies while still residing in Canada and Eduardo and Curro taking care of the technical and operational aspect here in Spain. Today, Arkitech stands as the sole provider of this cuttingedge product on the Costa del Sol. Unlike other small companies that offer prefabricated homes, Arkitech specializes in building premium-quality single-family homes. With the largest facilities in Malaga and a team of qualified engineers and architects, they are the pioneers in this field.

“In 2022, I noticed a demand for single-family homes from the international market and the time it took to meet that demand,” says David. “That’s when the idea of building homes in 6 months seemed like a viable solution, and thus Arkitech was born.”

REAL DE LA QUINTA

RESIDENTIAL COUNTRY CLUB RESORT

The Ultimate Luxury Lifestyle Nestled in Nature

There are few, if any, developments along the Costa del Sol and beyond that can match the elevated standards being presented by the projects within Real de La Quinta.

Based on the popular Country Club concept, the Resort is being built on 200 hectares around a serene man made lake with its own sandy beach as well as an array of complementary attractions such as a restaurant, wellness centre, gymnasium, tennis and paddle courts an executive golf course and a spectacular hotel. All within a beautiful natural enclave bordered by the Istán Lake and the Sierra de Las Nieves National Park and designed to elevate the resident experience.

We asked some probing questions of the developers, and their answers help explain the dominant position they hold within the real estate market.

Who are the developers of Real de La Quinta?

Unlike most new developments in the region, Real de La Quinta is not financed by an investment fund but rather by a very

successful family owned Spanish business with significant assets in the food sector. They have invested 35 years in the Marbella area having developed the entire La Quinta urbanisation and Real de La Quinta is their proposition for the next 35 years. They represent two generations of commitment to the area with a promise of stability and continuity for the future.

What marks the difference between Real de La Quinta and other developments?

Real de La Quinta has been conceived as a complete Resort. With El Lago Club forming the heart of the community, residents will enjoy the exceptional attractions of a private, gated Country Club. The expansive lake, spanning over 400 metres, will offer non-motorised water sports such as kayaking and paddle boarding, whilst a sandy beach bordering a swimming lagoon separated from the lake by a sweeping promenade beckons relaxation. The restaurant will offer glorious views across the water and the wellness centre with its indoor pool, gymnasium and treatment rooms will focus on the health and wellbeing of residents and their guests.

playing configurations winds around the lake, and tennis and paddle courts complete the sporting options.

What are the property options in Real de La Quinta?

To date there are five developments within the Resort : Olivos, Quercus, Palmitos, Sabinas and the current gem, Enebros. Each offer apartments and penthouses and all have exceptional views from the elevated, hillside positions on which they stand. All have been very well received by the market and have sold ahead of schedule, with owners seeing significant returns on their investments. More than 200 homes are now occupied with a further 156 under construction of which over 80% are sold. Once completed the Resort will comprise of some 1,600 homes.

Is there an hotel planned for the Resort?

Yes. The Banyan Tree Hotel Group have been selected to operate the hotel and Branded Residences within Real de La Quinta and will do so under their Angsana brand. This is their first venture in Spain and the selection process represented a meeting of the minds in terms of the vision of the future being proposed by both parties.

How significant is the location of the Resort?

Nestled in the hills above the coast, the Resort borders the Sierra de Las Nieves National Park. Real de La Quinta has a steadfast commitment to both minimising the impact of the development on the natural environment and ensuring sustainability going forward. From the outset it was determined that the entire resort would be governed by the dictates of Bream, an independent certification process for construction sustainability. This commitment means that the construction and function of the properties within Real de La Quinta as well as the resort infrastructure - with a Very Good classification - are far in advance of the current legal requirements and underlines their position as leaders in the real estate industry, not only in Marbella, but at a European level.

The project currently being offered is Enebros. Two, three and four bedroom apartments, penthouses and super-penthouses in a prime hillside position.

Situated at Paseo de Reding 25, it boasts a luxury location for the sale of luxury properties

The city of Málaga, capital of the Costa del Sol, is all the rage. Since the recent publication of a study by the prestigious Forbes magazine in which Malaga was named as “the best city to live in”, the demand for luxury properties has skyrocketed in its territory. The capital is certainly the place to be and Christie’s International Real Estate - Costa del Sol has been operating in the city since January.

CONSOLIDATING PRESENCE ON THE COSTA DEL SOL

With a new team, highly specialised in the area, the luxury properties of Málaga city and its surroundings are covered with more determination by the company from this 2024. A new headquarters, on the prestigious and beautiful Paseo de Reding, hosts a magnificent office that, as always, has as its main objective to give more and better service to its select clients. The chosen location is no coincidence. Malaga’s best new-build properties are in and around this neighbourhood.

MALAGA/MARBELLA

The new office means that Christie’s International Real Estate - Costa del Sol, adds another office to the network of more than 900 offices (in 50 countries) of the prestigious CHRISTIE’S real estate company. Until last year, a single office on Marbella’s Golden Mile covered the 14 towns on the Costa del Sol. “Malaga and its metropolitan area are growing steadily and it was time to give them due attention”, says the CEO and owner of the subsidiary, Hans Veenhuijsen.

MALAGA TEAM

At the head of this new office is Miguel Zapico, who has extensive experience in luxury real estate in Spain and Portugal. Among his most important real estate advisors is Monica Gruber, who not only brings her professional experience but also, as a North American who has lived in Malaga for 15 years, offers her personal experience of integration in the city. At a time when luxury homebuyers on the other side of the Atlantic seem to be on the rise, a wellmatched compatriot is the best advisor.

ROBIN WRIGHT

A life in a heartbeat

Una vida a golpe de corazón

Robin Wright has always lived life at a fast pace. American actress and film director, she is famous for her roles as Jenny Curran in the film ‘Forrest Gump’, and Claire Underwood in the series ‘House of Cards’. She grew up in San Diego, California, where she began her professional career as a model at the age of 14. Three years later, she landed her first acting role. At 21, she starred in the film ‘The Princess Bride’, which launched her to stardom.

y the age of 30, Wright had been married twice and had two children. She first got married to actor Dane Witherspoon at the age of 20, whom she met while filming the soap opera Santa Barbara. They divorced two years later. Shortly after, she entered into her second marriage, which was her most turbulent relationship, with actor Sean Penn. She had two children with him at the age of 24 and 27.

“I was very young when I had my first daughter. I had to wait until my children were older to be reborn. I started to be a woman when I was 40,” she has told journalists on different occasions. Her great success came when she returned to the industry after her second pregnancy, playing Jenny in ‘Forrest Gump’. During this time, she had to face the weight of fame with constant separations and reconciliations with the actor. Despite her efforts to conserve a united family, she would end up divorcing him after two decades of turbulence. It was a long and complex process that she would later describe as “devastating”.

Then came a new chance at love, with actor Ben Foster, 14 years her junior. According to Wright, Foster was the person who made her laugh the most in her life. But the relationship ended, and in 2017, the actress began dating Clément Giraudet, a Yves Saint Laurent executive 18 years her junior. They married in secret a year later.

SUCCESS IN MATURITY

Robin currently has a great relationship with her sons, both of whom are actors. Interestingly, in this more mature stage of life, the actress is living a second youth, enjoying both her personal life and professional success, following her appearance in the hit series ‘House of Cards’ as the ruthless Claire Underwood.

Very self-confident, the actress waged a labour war with the show’s producers, demanding the same salary as her co-star, actor Kevin Spacey. And she got it. She has also achieved her dream of becoming a film director, a job she has combined with her big screen appearances as the superheroine Antiope, Wonder Woman’s aunt.

Nowadays, Robin Wright has swapped her eagerness to take the world by storm for a slow-burning life of love, success, and the wisdom that comes with the passage of time. She has a lifetime ahead of her to enjoy it all.

MARCO MASEDA

“I don’t paint portraits, I paint souls” “No pinto retratos pinto almas”

Unclassifiable and highly sensitive artist (PAS)

Marco Maseda has gone through a life in which, often, it seemed like a roller coaster where the ups and downs have been brief transits and adrenaline an essential ingredient of an exciting journey never seen before. The rootlessness and that overflowing talent that only those who are not afraid know, are dressed in urban art and Marco Maseda elevates them to a transgression that challenges academics and the most sensible purists. The desire to scribble, which was born in him almost since he can remember. Bad student, restless, extroverted, “a crazy person about life,” in his own words, he got bored at school and wondered why he had to study subjects that didn’t interest him in the slightest, but at the same time he was a happy child. . Drawing entered him “at a very early age I realized that I was very good at it and that people valued me for that.”

Artista inclasificable y altamente sensible (PAS) Marco

He grabs the brushes and disconnects from the world, it is his meditation, time freezes. In the portraits he finds “the traumas, the fears, the hard things that happen to us in life. What stigmatizes us is in the face, in the eyes, in the wrinkles, in those million gestures, languages... That is why it is normal that that is the place where I stop, because that is where everything about a human being is, or where there is more information: in a grimace, in a wink, in the look.”

The Spanish artist Maseda currently champions ‘street art’ in our country and has become, due to his own merits, one of the most sought-after brushes in urban art. His meteoric rise within the art world tells us a story of talent, effort and tenacity. From his first works in his native Castellón to painting live in the heart of New York for MTV and Paramount, in Starlite, in Dubai for Art World Dubai or the Las Ventas bullring in Madrid for Comunidad de Madrid, there has hardly been any time 15 years. He is currently one of the 3 most sought-after Spanish artists.

An exponent of new figuration with urban touches, Maseda has his best ally in his portrait. Faces with a great expressive charge that show the most hidden corners of the soul. Always in black and white, but with a touch of fluorescent pink that has become the personal trademark that characterizes most of his paintings. Maseda seeks in all his fragile, tormented and sensitive characters a kind of alter ego of his own personality.

AIXA PORTERO

The Culture of Peace

Aixa Portero is an artist from Malaga. She is an artist who is exhibiting her exhibition at the Isolina Arbulu art gallery in Marbella until May 10: “Sturdust: a universal poem” where she reflects about how we are composed of elements forged in the hearts of distant stars. This cosmic connection invites us to recognize our fundamental unity with the universe and relates it with a Culture of Peace.

Contemporary art, in its deepest and most reflective expression, serves as a powerful means to promote a Culture of Peace in the world. At a time when conflict, division and violence persists in many societies, contemporary art emerges as a catalyst for dialogue, understanding and reconciliation. Aixa Portero has been working on it for almost 25 years. The Culture of Peace, in essence, advocates the peaceful resolution of conflicts, the promotion of tolerance and reconciliation, and the building of fairer and more just societies. In this context, contemporary art acts as a mirror of society, reflecting its tensions, but also offering alternative and hopeful visions of society. Following her personal experience of the atrocity of violence, contemporary art was her catharsis and her salvation

( her father was murdered by the terrorist group ETA in 2000). Peace must be born from within to emerge on the outside. Through her work she shows the power of art to challenge narratives of conflict and offer new perspectives that invite reflection and change. Her works seek to generate a safe space for an intercultural encounter and celebration of diversity.

As a lecturer in Fine Arts and a collaborating member of the Institute for Peace and Conflict at the University of Granada for more than 20 years, she understands that education and art are powerful tools for transformation. In addition, her teaching and research work in the field of socially engaged contemporary art enrich her artistic approach to the Culture of Peace.

For three years she was the artistic director of the United Nations Women Together. Women Together PDI, while the NGO was active. And she is also a civilian member of Unesco and a member of the Unesco Club since 2021. Since then all her exhibitions are endorsed, by the FECU (Federation of Unesco Clubs of Spain).

The importance of the Culture of Peace in contemporary art lies in its ability to inspire, educate, and mobilize people in

the search for a better world. Through art, we can imagine and build a future in which cooperation, respect and human dignity prevail. That is why her art proposals explore themes related to peace, non-violence, nature and human dignity. She uses a variety of media and techniques, from drawing, painting, photography and sculpture to installations and digital art, in order to convey messages of hope, awareness and reflection on the importance of the Culture of Peace in the contemporary.

Aixa Portero is trained in Fine Arts (Painting and Sculpture) at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Granada. She completed her degree studies at the Sint Lukas Hoger Instituut in Brussels and developed an interest in new trends in art, new media trends in art and the culture of peace, concluding her training abroad. She obtained a Third Cycle of Advanced Studies in Plastic Research at L’École Supérieure d’Art Visuel de Genève (nowadays called HEAD-ESGE) in Geneva (Switzerland). Subsequently she did a Postgraduate degree at the Piet Zwart Institute, the Fine Arts Programme of the Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam (The Netherlands). She then participated as a research artist at the University of California, San Diego (USA) in the Department of Visual Arts, where she carried out a large part of her research, which resulted in a doctoral thesis in 2006, which was awarded with a European mention by the University of Granada University.

Aixa Portero has an extensive artistic career which includes almost twenty solo exhibitions and more than forty group exhibitions at national and international level. She has exhibited in four museums of contemporary art; the next exhibition will be in the Contemporary Art Museum of México in November. Her work has been shown in international cities such as Brussels, Geneva, Rotterdam, San Diego, Havana, Los Angeles, Paris, Minsk, Vilnius, Bogotá, and San José. She is a lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Granada University in Spain and is a collaborating member of the Institute of Peace and Conflict of the University of Granada. PASTA ONER FRESH POP ART EXHIBITION IN MARBELLA

The exhibition “Happy Meal” by Pasta Oner will take place from the 10th of May until the 31st of July 2024 in SIN Studio Gallery, located on the main avenue in Marbella.

One of the most prominent contemporary artists of the Czech visual scene, Pasta Oner, will cheer up the cultural happenings in Marbella. This renowned artist will hold an exhibition in SIN Studio Gallery Marbella, a glass sculpture gallery, which founded a new sector to present the works of famous Czech and international artists to the south-Spanish public, all that under the patronage of the Czech Embassy.

Pasta Oner, with his real name Zdenek Randa, was born in 1979 in Trencin, Czech Republic. As a creative personality, he has been profiled in recent years within the boundaries of classic independent and public gallery operations, in which he combines and at the same time transcends the classic genre categories of pop art and cartoon aesthetics. Despite the fact that at the core of his work he touches on the principles of “post-production”, the work is different against the current dominant currents of post-conceptual strategies in the visual arts; the focus of Pasta’s work is acrylic painting and the creation of hanging paintings, as well as the design of spatial objects, sculptures, installations and the realization of murals in form of large-format paintings in public spaces. The author

places the traditional themes of fascination with the world of wealth, sex, faith, luxury brands and consumer beauty into the new and current context of the cyber society, the world of exponentially increasing speed of information transfer and clip aesthetics of everyday experience.

The exhibition “Happy Meal” by Pasta Oner will take place from the 10th of May until the 31st of July 2024 in SIN Studio Gallery, located on the main avenue in Marbella. The visitors can look forward to huge pop art canvases and astonishing glass sculptures created as a collaboration through SIN Studio Gallery’s unique glass casting technology. This big cultural event will start with a ceremonial preview on the 9th of May 2024 and will be inaugurated by the artist himself and the representatives of the Czech Embassy in Madrid. For more information about the exhibition and the preview contact directly with the gallery.

A word with

ROGER WIDÉN

PARTNER & HEAD OF SALES

Roger Widén was born and raised in Stockholm, but in 2006, driven by a desire for change and equipped with captain skills perfected in the Swedish Marines, he embarked on a new path. His expertise in navigating waters led him to Marbella initially as yacht captain were he met his wife and started his family.

In 2011, amidst the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, Roger made a strategic move into real estate in Marbella. His timing was impeccable. As one of the few Swedes in the local real estate market, he capitalised on the strong Swedish crown, attracting numerous Swedish buyers. His journey in real estate began in challenging times, with the market still reeling and prices falling until 2014. This challenging start provided Roger with invaluable experience, learning the ropes in a market set against the wind.

After working in real estate for a decade, Roger wanted a fresh challenge and just then, he met Eric Ebbing Founder & CEO of Homerun Brokers. Their similar mindset and goals is what then made Eric welcome Roger into the company as Partner and Head of Sales. Roger plays a key role in the company’s growth by sharing his excellent knowledge and experience.

We sit down with Roger Widen, the newly appointed Partner & Head of Sales at Homerun Brokers. In this interview, we dive into Roger’s vision for the company and gain insight into his strategic direction as he embarks on this exciting journey with us.

On the question of what motivated Roger to join Homerun Brokers as Head of Sales, he explains that this decision was rooted in his two core passions in life; real estate and building or developing businesses. Throughout his career, Roger has engaged in various facets of real estate, from development and investment to asset management and sales. This diverse experience has not only deepened his love for the real estate process, but has also developed extensive skills in building and improving business processes and routines.

“Homerun Brokers is on a very exciting journey, coming from basically nowhere and in three years becoming a major brand in Marbella. I wanted to be part of that journey. And based on my experience, I know that I have a lot to give to this company. And of course, I mean, the team... They’re great people. I wanted to be part of this team.”

We asked Roger what made Homerun Brokers stand out for him, as an outsider looking in, before joining the team, and he explained:

“Well, I mean, first of all, it’s been very difficult to miss Homerun Brokers. You know, marketing has been extremely good. Fresh, new, something different that no one else really does. But then from where I was, I’ve been doing deals with brokers at Homerun Brokers, and it’s been really smooth. I’ve seen how well the team at Homerun Brokers takes care of clients. Marketing is really important, but on top of that comes service level, to actually follow through with the clients and keeping that service at the highest level. In the end, any company can do a lot of marketing, but if you don’t do business, you’re not getting anywhere.”

As someone with over a decades insight into the Marbella real estate market, we asked Roger where the current market stands and where he sees Homerun Brokers positioned in this current market.

“Well, right now, I would say the market is strong. It’s positive. We have to remember that we’re coming out of something unique during Covid. After Covid, the market was stronger worldwide than it’s ever been. And many think it’s ever going to be.

“We are really excited to welcome our clients into our new space on the Golden Mile that we have created in collaboration with Slettvoll”

So we have to compare it with the time before Covid. We’ve had a few really good years in 2021 and 2022. But Homerun Brokers proved to do extremely good in 2023 also, when a lot of companies backed on their numbers. Homerun Brokers had an increase with 50 percent, which is stunning. That’s really well done. And that only comes from hard work.”

Roger continues by explaining that 2024 will bring many new opportunities that will cement Homerun Brokers position on the market even further, such as the opening of the new headquarters on the Golden Mile, the inauguration of the first office in Palma de Mallorca and the company’s very own Netflix show.

“We’ve got the Netflix show that’s airing 2024 which is of course going to bring a lot more attention to our brokers and everyone in the company. So we have a very exciting year to look forward to”

Roger joined Homerun Brokers in the middle of filming for the Netflix show which was quite an unusual situation to walk in to. Meeting the whole team for the first time with cameras rolling was not something he would have imagined a few years back, but Roger embraced the experience and enjoyed it.

In regards to the two new offices opening, Roger sees these as crucial steps in order for Homerun Brokers to continue fortifying its relationships with clients and collaborators.

“We are really excited to welcome our clients into our new space on the Golden Mile that we have created in collaboration with Slettvoll. This space perfectly reflects the high level of brand experience we want to provide for both our clients and employees.”

Roger explains that opening an office in Mallorca has been on Homerun Bokers founder, Eric’s, mind for a long time. Mallorca has a strong real estate market, and the client synergy in addition to the proximity between Marbella and Mallorca made it the next suitable step in Homerun Brokers expansion. Carefully being curated by the new appointment Business Expansion Manager, Robert Bazo.

Bringing it back to the Marbella real estate market, we asked Roger for his opinion on the impact of Homerun Developments entry on the market and what this means for Homerun Brokers.

“The benefit with Homerun Developments is that we are able to produce the product that our clients are looking for. We control what we are doing, how we are doing it, the execution level, the quality level, and making sure we create good homes that our buyers are actually asking for. So obviously for Homerun Brokers, we are going to have the product our clients are looking for, and we can assure them that they are really good quality because we created them ourselves.”

Rounding up “A Word With Roger”, we decided to ask him for advice on three commonly asked asked questions.

What is your best advice to someone who is looking to buy a property in Marbella?

“My advice for anyone that’s looking to buy something in Marbella is to pick your agent. It’s a bit of a jungle here. Other markets are easier to navigate on your own, but in Marbella, find an agent that’s looking out for your interests and is asking you the right questions. That is not only what budget you have, but basically what kind of life do you want to live? What does your family look like? What do you want to do in your spare time? How do you see your life in Marbella?

Find an agent that cares about you more than only making a deal, and stick to that agent, because they will go through fire to find you the right property.

In Marbella, I would say 80% of all transactions are done between two agents. One agent representing the vendor, and one agent representing the buyer. What the buyer’s agent does is basically taking you to all listings, handle all the contacts with the different listing agents, recommending lawyers, finance, show you their favourite grocery stores and so on. A good agent will help you have a smooth overall experience which is why it is the most important advice when entering the Marbella property market.”

What is your best advice to someone who wants to become a successful real estate agent?

“So first of all, if you want to get into real estate, well, there are two different ways. You can do it half time, but you will get half results. If you want to be one of the best, it’s a lifestyle. It’s not just a job. It’s 24/7. If you want to get into the business, what I wish I learned earlier, is find someone that’s good at what they’re doing. Work with them, even if it’s as an assistant or a helping hand, but get close to someone that’s really good at what they are doing and learn. Just the value of being in the same room as a top producing broker and their clients, listening into their conversations is worth gold.”

What is your best advice for someone who’s is thinking of moving to Marbella?

Just do it. I really doubt that you are going to regret it. Just pack your bags and move here. If you are not ready to commit to purchasing a property our rental department is here to assist you. I do not see myself ever moving back to Sweden, so just do it.

I RAQUEL ZAMORA

FOUNDER OF GRUPO RACHEL’S

see you as a very familiar person, tell us about your family.

My priority has always been my family, and I consider them to be my driving force in everything I do. Nothing would make sense to me if I couldn’t share and enjoy it with them. We have a very strong bond and we love spending time all together. We enjoy traveling, eating delicious food, relaxing in Marbella, and, in general, celebrating life and the love we have for each other, which is the most important thing there is.

Tell us when and how did you start, both in the world of hospitality and beauty.

I studied Advertising and Communication in college, and I always had an entrepreneurial spirit running through my veins, a trait I am convinced I inherited from my father. Over 15 years ago, I wanted to create a project that combined my great passions: a love for beauty and well-being, always paying attention to the smallest details of the experience. That’s how Milk&Roses was born, a beauty salon that embodies these values, in addition to positioning ourselves as the showcase in Marbella for international brands pioneering in the beauty and self-care world.

Later, Rachel’s Eco Love came to life with the purpose of encouraging people to take care of themselves from the inside out. With this project, I fell in love with the hospitality industry, and my goal was to bring to Marbella restaurant concepts that did not exist here until then. Inspired by great influencers I discovered during my travels around the world, Rachel’s Eco Love emerged as a space where, in addition to finding healthy and delicious food, you are surrounded by a unique environment that makes you want to come back again and again because the experience makes you feel at home.

What I enjoy the most about Rachel’s is that every time I walk in, I can see and recognize customers as part of a great family and community that we have cultivated with a lot of love and dedication. Without a doubt, I believe there is no better reward.

What is the most satisfying thing about your business?

For me, my work is not just a job; it’s fun, it’s creation, it’s love, and it’s a tremendous amount of passion. There isn’t a day that goes by without me waking up excited and eager for everything I have to do to keep growing. I believe one of the keys for me, based on my personality, is that with such a diversity of projects within Grupo Rachel’s, no two days are alike, and that keeps a very vibrant flame within me. As I mentioned earlier, if I choose something truly satisfying, it would undoubtedly be seeing our

business’s customers happy, and enjoying what we offer. For me, everything we create goes far beyond a restaurant or a beauty salon; it’s an experience, my lifestyle, and my passion for sharing it.

What is the secret of your success as a businesswoman?

Always staying true to what I think and feel. I believe and trust in my intuition, and I simply cannot look the other way when something is calling out to me. I have never embarked on a project thinking that it might not succeed because who would be able to bring it forward with that mindset? I would say that my secret is doing what I love, trusting, and most importantly, gathering all the lessons along the way.

What is your favourite dish and where can we taste it?

Breakfast/brunch: Açaí bowl at Rachel’s Eco Love.

Lunch: Hygge Wrap at Lagom! Café.

Dinner: Wild Sea Bass Ceviche at 11:11 Société.

What is the Rachel’s movement?

The Rachel’s Movement arises from the need to connect, to build a community that shares the same values and interests. It’s about finding a balance between fun and well-being. We create wellness experiences where we gather our community to enjoy events such as Barre&Brunch, Yoga&Brunch, MARBEFORNIA, Bootcamp&Brunch, Pilates&Brunch, and Taco Wednesday.

Our purpose is to bring like-minded individuals together to share a healthy and active lifestyle, providing them with unique and unforgettable experiences.

We know you don’t stop creating, ¿what is next?

The next project is closely tied to the Movimiento Rachel’s community. We wanted to take it to another level and share this lifestyle with as many people as possible, and that’s why we decided to launch Rachel’s World Tour, kicking off in Marbella with these experiences and one-of-a-kind events, we’ll continue traveling a bringing Movimiento Rachel’s to top destinations such as Madrid, London, or Miami.

We know that Gómez & Molina has a great international reputation. What makes you different from other jewellers?

Tell us about your passion for painting, and where can we see your works?

“I started drawing as a child and I’ve exhibited my work in group exhibitions. But it was four years ago that Malvin Gallery in Madrid included me as an artist in their catalogue, along with the painter Alejandro Hermann, exhibiting at the Manchester Art Fair and more recently at the same gallery in Madrid. I currently have paintings in the exhibition space of our store at 15 Avda. de Ramón y Cajal, in Marbella.”

What jewel should every woman have?

“Ultimately, the one that brings a smile to her face, but they do say that diamonds are a girl’s best friend…”

What jewel should every man have?

“In today’s society, we’ve reached a level of sophistication that has led to watches becoming the accessory of the contemporary man. Nowadays, anything goes, for men as well as for women.”

What jewel has surprised you the most?

“A set with centres of Paraiba tourmaline of an extraordinary colour and size.”

We know that many celebrities and famous personalities have been to Gómez & Molina. Could you tell us an anecdote that touched you?

JUAN ANTONIO DOBLAS HIDALGO

ARCHITECT / ARQUITECTO - DOBLAS HIDALGO ARQUITECTOS

How did your interest in architecture begin?

“From a very early age I loved playing with plasticine and creating figures that I imagined were buildings, cities with carts and mountains.”

What’s your main motivation in your profession?

“My greatest motivations are my passion for pushing the boundaries of design, the environment, and innovation to meet our clients’ needs and dreams.”

An architect you admire?

“Tadao Ando.”

How do you envision the future of architecture in Marbella?

“Marbella is currently undergoing a significant transformation in its architectural landscape, with the emergence of unique, exclusive housing developments. We’re at the forefront in the design of luxury homes, setting a standard for other cities worldwide.”

What do you prefer, classic or modern?

“This is the dilemma we’re faced with. Classic refers to what has been established over time, creating a tradition. Classic refers to the experience and wisdom that comes with time. Modern refers to the present time and implies a forward-thinking attitude. But why should they be considered opposites or at odds with each other? Aren’t they complementary?”

Which country has left a lasting impression on you, and why would you recommend visiting it?

“Japan, for its attention to detail and its close relationship with nature, its aesthetics, the culture of emptiness, and its social values.”

What are your hobbies?

“I love travelling, exploring new places and cultures, doing sports, and especially anything to do with the creative arts, reading and music.”

A quote that has had a profound effect on you?

‘Inspiration is everywhere, you just have to know how to see it.’

“Tadao Ando’s words encourage us to keep our eyes and mind open to the endless opportunities that surround us in our daily lives. By simply observing and appreciating our surroundings, we can discover inspiration in every corner.”

From Italy to Marbella Blackshaw Welcomes Paolo Castelli to Costa del Sol

The local interior design and property development firm Blackshaw proudly opened the doors to its Paolo Castelli flagship store, displaying the iconic furniture pieces in their showroom. This partnership brings a touch of Italian luxury and excitement to the sun-kissed shores of Southern Spain.

Innovation and creativity are the pillars on which Blackshaw’s interior design projects are built, formed from the ultimate

ambition of maximising the use of space to develop beautiful yet practical designs that surprise and delight our clients. No designer works alone, of course, and one of the most important relationships that Sally Blackshaw, CEO of Blackshaw Group, has nurtured for many years is with the suppliers of high-end furniture and objects that are perfectly placed to enhance the project’s aesthetic.

VISIONS ALIGN

Sally has long been an admirer of the luxury furniture brand Paolo Castelli SpA, located in Bologna, Italy. Her appreciation

for the brand’s designs stems from a shared artistic sensibility founded on elegance, design creativity and an uncompromising insistence on quality. So, when a chance opportunity arose to meet Paolo Castelli himself in Marbella, Sally wasted no time in accepting. “It felt like the stars were aligning,” Sally says now of this fateful encounter.

The meeting initially took place as an introductory discussion, but soon became something considerably deeper, as both Sally and Paolo realised there was an opportunity to create something much more ambitious together.

The seeds that were sewn at this first meeting quickly grew and became the Blackshaw x Paolo Castelli collaboration, culminating in a partnership that heralds the respected Italian furniture maker’s first venture into mainland Spain, debuting their flagship store located in the Blackshaw premises in central Marbella.

HISTORIC TECHNIQUES, CUTTING-EDGE PROCESSES

The initial conversations between Sally and Paolo were “more like a creative meeting of minds than a business discussion,” affirms Sally, as the two found shared passions for innovation in design as well as a deep-rooted respect for artisanal tradition in furniture manufacturing.

A visit to Bologna and the historic headquarters of the Castelli family further cemented the relationship as Sally learned more about the creative and manufacturing processes that yielded the unique finished pieces.

Although the emphasis on hand-crafted, artisanal, and intricately designed pieces emanates from a long family history with the craftspeople of this area, the design process at the Paolo Castelli headquarters is anything but archaic. Cuttingedge techniques are used both in the design process where 3-D impressions mean even more intricate detail can be examined before going to manufacture, while innovative and state-ofthe-art materials are constantly being developed that further burnish the credentials of this renowned marque and enable them to bring forth their celebrated signature pieces.

FLAGSHIP PAOLO CASTELLI SHOWROOM

The Castelli legacy, which traces back to 1887 with Paolo’s great-grandfather Ettore Castelli’s cabinetry workshop, has evolved through craft and industry, to his transformative leadership as head of the company in 1994. This evolution was further solidified in 2011 with the birth of Paolo Castelli SpA, a fusion of family companies Domodinamica and Modular, ushering in a new era of interior and product design prowess. Under Paolo’s guidance, the brand has embraced cuttingedge processes while honouring historic techniques, culminating in the opening of their flagship showroom in Milan in 2014. This journey now marks a significant milestone in the continuous pursuit of excellence and quality that both Blackshaw Group and Paolo Castelli SpA epitomise, with the Marbella showroom set to continue the legacy that began so long ago in Bologna.

Blackshaw’s team of trusted designers are committed to helping clients find the perfect pieces to suit their unique needs and style. For those unable to visit the showroom in person, Paolo Castelli’s pieces are conveniently accessible through their official Spanish

CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIAS LAS ARRITMIAS CARDIACAS

A curable epidemic / Una epidemia curable

The cardiovascular intervention unit at Hospital Helicopteros Sanitarios, formed by Dr Luis Iñigo, Dr Eduardo Molina, Dr Pedro Brugada and Dr Juan Sieira, performs all types of interventions related to arrhythmias, ischaemic heart disease and congenital or structural heart disease.

Heart conditions remain the number one cause of death in the Western world. One in three people die from heart failure. Heart failure can occur in any of the three components of the heart: mechanical, circulatory or electrical.

How can arrhythmias in people with structural heart disease be treated?

When arrhythmias are the consequence of structural heart disease, correction is the most important basis for preventing sudden death. To do this, we must identify those at risk. Starting with an interview with the patient where we obtain clinical information that we will complete with examinations such as heart imaging through ultrasound, radiology (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that have revolutionised cardiology. The geneticfamilial factor must also be taken into account and all relatives of a patient with heart problems must be investigated. With early diagnosis, there are many possible treatments and they are very effective.

The classic treatment is by means of antiarrhythmic drugs, although these need to be taken daily and do not cure the arrhythmia, merely prevent it or improve the symptoms, apart from the side effects they have. That is why today ablation techniques are preferred, which cure flutter and atrial tachycardia in almost all cases and in a very high percentage of cases of atrial fibrillation. A catheter is used to record local activity within the heart, locate the site of origin of the tachycardia and destroy this area by means of heat or cold.

Other common arrhythmias in young people are Wolff-ParkinsonWhite syndrome or WPW and intranodal tachycardia, the latter very common in young women.

EKATERINA MANAENKO

A photographer with loving eyes

Why Marbella?

I’m new here. Originally from Russia, I moved to Marbella at the end of August, 2022. Why Marbella? THE BEAUTY and THE PEOPLE. I just fell in love with its atmosphere, climate, culture, and so many different locations. In my country I mostly work in photo studios and indoor events because of the weather conditions. So I enjoy having more freedom to do interesting outdoor shoots here! I’d been dreaming of moving to Europe for 15 years,

but I just couldn’t find a SPECIAL place. But then I did! The sea, beach and mountains are the perfect combination for me!

Why am I a photographer?

I’ve been working as a photographer for the last 10 years. It had been my hobby since my student years. I’d take my camera everywhere, and take photos of my family, friends, and just strangers in the street. But when people offered to pay me,

EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE 199

I refused, as I thought they shouldn’t pay for this - it was a hobby for me. At that time, I was working in marketing. But in my dreams, I wanted to work as a photographer.

But in fact, my passion for photography started much earlier. When I was a kid, I loved looking at photos taken by my grandpa - it was like a miracle - to have the possibility to see where he had been when he was young, and become a part of it.

It wasn’t an easy choice to give up my career, a good salary, and start working for myself. But I think this turned out to be one of the best decisions in my life.

Professional mission

I believe that everyone is beautiful and photogenic. Having grown up in a country where women aren’t used to getting compliments, and their self esteem is generally pretty low. I understand how challenging it can be for women to accept their beauty. Instead of focusing on their positive attributes, they tend to dwell on minor details of their appearance.

Many people are afraid of public exposure and using Instagram as a network for personal brand development. As a result, their talents and knowledge aren’t shared with others.

My aim is to capture what I see through my camera lensthe charisma and the personality of each person. Whether it’s a personal photoshoot for art therapy or developing content for social media, the personality of my clients is my focus. I listen carefully to my clients’ wishes, and tailor each photoshoot accordingly, as everyone is unique.

Why people say my clients look like artists in the magazines

Indeed, all my clients are artists, as I believe that every personality has an artistic side. I think that the key to a successful shoot is in the preparation. I meet my clients online or in person before the photoshoot to understand their preferences, develop the creative concept and plan the shoot. We discuss locations and clothes - every detail is important. I do my best to ensure my clients can enjoy the process and trust me.

Being inspired and following trends - that’s also important to develop high quality pictures, continuing your self-education by taking photography courses from the world’s best photographers.

The most valuable feedback from your practice? When clients return for another photoshoot. And sometimes they even compare me with other photographers, and say: “I can be myself with you.”

BETTE DAVIS

A star who went against the current Una estrella a contracorriente

Bette Davis was so much more than the great Hollywood villain. The actress never adhered to the aesthetic canons of the actress of her time, but her enormous talent proved the early predictions of a short film career to be very wrong.

uth Elizabeth Davis was born in Massachusetts. Following her parents’ separation, she and her sister were placed in an orphanage. When she was 12, they moved to New York with their mother, who unfortunately, was never able to overcome her problems with alcoholism.

Betty, as her family called her, always aspired to become an actress. Thanks to her efforts, she managed to secure minor roles in modest Broadway productions and gradually established herself in the industry. Her bulging eyes and such pale skin that it resembled mother-of-pearl drew the attention of the producers. It was her unconventional beauty that earned her such intriguing roles throughout her career.

Bette Davis married actor Harmon Nelson in 1932, but was never happy with him. She suffered several miscarriages, and blamed the quarrels with her husband and her concern for her mother and sister, who were going through psychiatric crises.

Two years after getting married, her career took off with the film ‘Captive Desire’, which received excellent reviews. In 1936, she won her first Oscar for ‘Dangerous’, followed a few years later by a second for ‘Jezebel’. Davis began a romantic relationship with the director William Wyler, who proposed to her, but he ultimately married someone else.

After filming ‘All about Eve’ and ‘Now, Voyager’, the public already hailed her as their favourite villain. Divorced from her first husband, the actress married Arthur Farnsworth, but as fate would have it, he died suddenly. A year later she married William Grant Sherry, with whom she had a daughter, but the marriage lasted only five years.

Along with motherhood came the decline in the actress’ career. Whenever she saw her archnemesis, Joan Crawford, succeed, Bette Davis would become enraged. However, fate gave her another chance with ‘All About Eve’, earning her an Oscar nomination, and a new husband, Gary Merrill, whom she was married to for a decade. He adopted the actress’s daughter, and together they adopted a girl named Margot and a boy named Michael.

Her husband’s heavy drinking caused Davis to separate once more. In 1983, the actress was battling breast cancer and suffered a massive stroke. At the age of 81, she passed away in France, just hours after receiving a career award in San Sebastian. Her epitaph reads: “She did it the hard way.”, although she would probably have preferred to put: “I survived because I was tougher than anybody.”
