Do No Harm: Prevent Yoga Injuries

“I

am too stiff for yoga,” the man said when he walked in. I assured him taught properly no one is too stiff.

Then a young lady walks in holding her elbow. She tore muscles at her gym yoga class with too many yoga push ups. I sent her home to protect her arm and suggested she seek medical help.

Many regard yoga as a physical fitness routine rather more than a transformation pathway. Why try a class?

Students share a variety of reasons: ease stress, lose weight, become more flexible, or release back, neck/ shoulder or hip pain. Few share their wish to overcome limitations, ego, or evolve as a person. And that’s okay.

One of the key roles of the teacher is to keep yoga safe. Transformation of bad habits, a change of attitude, or learning how to manage stress may or may not happen; but, injury can be avoided if the teacher is certified and/or credentialed.

In my 30 years of practice, I sustained one injury when I did not pay attention to my pose and pulled a muscle. It was a good lesson. I always pay attention and back off when I know it may be too difficult or at risk for how my body responds that day.

Doing no harm is a philosophy called “ahisma” or creating non-violence in our minds, actions, words and thoughts. It’s a tall order indeed! Our thoughts of guilt, shame, resentment, disappointment all have seeds of “violence” within them.

Non-violence is unconditional love. It holds true compassion for self and others.

How to avoid injury 1. Find your breath and keep it strong throughout your practice.

2. Avoid comparing your pose to anyone in the room. Comparison feeds ego.

3. Understand alignment principles which will protect your joints and prevent injury.

4. As you learn to align the energy or “prana” flows into every fiber of your being 5. Think of a three story building.

What might topple if footings were shaky or out of frame?

6. A good teacher knows how to modify poses. Always inform he/she about current health challenges.

7. Practice at home and observe.

Where do you feel compression?

Where are your edges?

Do you enter a pose with willfulness or mindfulness?

The gift of self -awareness yoga gives is priceless. Now you have tools to turn-around anxiety and fears. You will become aware when you trip yourself up with your own ego or limitations. Your mental, emotional, and physical health soars to new heights. “Do no harm” to self or others becomes part of your heart and your thinking on a daily basis; and yes, you will, help make this world a better place. he intersection of science and sacred traditions is a place of great interest, new learning and, hopefully, profound insight into ideas and practices that make our lives richer. Let’s look at some of these belief systems.

Chief Seattle, speaking in Duwamish in 1854, was reported by Dr. Henry A. Smith to have said, “ This we know: All things are connected like the blood that unites us.

We did not weave the web of life, We are merely in it.

Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.”

Buddhism, a 2,500 year old philosophy, teaches: “At the most fundamental level of life itself, there is no separation between ourselves and the environment…everything around us, including work and family relationships, is the reflection of our inner lives.”(Buddhism in Action for Peace) Buddhism also teaches that everything exists in one eternal moment and that cause and effect are simultaneous.

Quantum Physics, something I don’t pretend to understand, talks about entanglement which says that particles on opposite sides of the universe can be intrinsically linked so that they share information instantly. The rules of time and space, as we have known them, do not apply.

Chaos theory, sometimes called the butterfly effect, postulates that a butterfly’s wing flap may initiate a disturbance that ultimately leads to a hurricane or other phenomenon across the world. Simultaneous cause and effect are occurring. Beginning to see some parallels?

Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D., experienced these realities in her life when she had a left brain stroke at the age of thirty-eight.

She relates her story in My Stroke of Insight, detailing her four hour stroke episode, her recovery process and learning from all of this. Dr. Taylor is, by training, a neuro-anatomist, and had been studying brains for some time.

The morning of the stroke, she knew something was wrong, but as her left brain became more impaired and the right brain was dominant, something very amazing happened. She was thinking very differently. “What a bizarre living being I am. Life! I am life! I am a sea of water inside this membrane pouch. Here in this form, I am a conscious mind and this body is the vehicle through which I am ALIVE! I am trillions of cells sharing a common mind. I am here, now, thriving as life.” She had no ability to call 911 or

call for help. She was having an amazing transcendental experience of the ‘oneness of her body and mind, self and the environment.’ She felt no sense of the ego self, no anger or sadness, only deep inner peace.

In the months and years following the stroke her goal was to keep the sense of deep inner peace alive in her daily life.

She had no desire to return to her egotistical self that was stopped by her fears, anger, regrets and ambitions. She has come to believe that this is a choice for herself and for all of us. As she recovered the use of her left brain, she worked very hard to remember and use the great qualities of her right brain.

When faced with anger, for example, she says “Moment by moment, I make the choice to either hook into my neurocircuitry or move back into the present moment, allowing that reaction to melt away as fleeting physiology.” This is a great example of taking charge of our lives, using the simultaneity of all experiences, the inter-connection as a tool of expanding our awareness and control.

Using the knowledge of the breadth and depth of our experience, we can make healthy choices for creating peace, joy and positive action. It is simple, not easy. It takes practice, conscious awareness, lots of deep breathing and connecting with our many inner and outer resources. Let’s choose that peace!

epression used to have a very good outcome. If you went to your physician with symptoms of depression 30 to 40 years ago, he or she would tell you that you could and would get better. You’d be assured that most depression episodes run their course without specific interventions such as drug treatment. Now advertisements all but hypnotize you into believing that this drug or that will help you feel better – especially if it turns out that you’re one of the two-thirds of people on antidepressants who aren’t getting better. When it comes to side effects, many people are aware of the common ones, such as sexual dysfunction and sleeplessness. Or that others, like substantial weight gain and increased glucose and lipid metabolism, can be so unpleasant that people on these drugs just stop taking them.

Exercise: One of Nature’s Best Alternatives to Maintaining Good Mental Health A Duke University team studied three groups that tried exercise only, exercise plus drugs, and drugs only, to see what treatment best treated depression. They found that after six weeks, the drug-only group was doing a tiny bit better than the other two groups. The drug used was Zoloft. It was hypothesized that the best stay-well rate would be those with drugs plus exercise. But they were wrong! Ten months later, it was the exercise-only group that was most successful in maintaining wellness! The follow-up study, which followed the same participants for an additional six months, found that patients who continued to exercise after completing the initial trial were much less likely to see their depression return. Only eight percent of patients in the exercise group had their depression return, while 38 percent of the drug-only group and 31 percent of the exercise -plus-drug group relapsed.

Nutrition Also Plays an Important Part It’s already known that many additives, preservatives and food colorants can cause behavioral changes and sugar should definitely be on this list. One of the most recent and highly plausible theories that explain sugar’s impact on your mood and mental health is the connection between sugar and chronic inflammation. Other studies have also found significant links between high-sugar diets and mental health problems such as depression and schizophrenia, even though they were not focused on the presence of inflammation per se. For example, a 2004 study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry found that a higher dietary intake of refined sugar and dairy products predicted a worse 2-year outcome of schizophrenia.

As explained by Dr. Russell Blaylock, high sugar content and starchy carbohydrates lead to excessive insulin release, which can lead to falling blood sugar levels, or hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia, in turn, causes your brain to secrete glutamate in levels that can cause agitation, depression, anger, anxiety, panic attacks, and an increase in suicide risk. The dietary answer for treating depression is to severely limit sugars, especially fructose, as well as grains.

How the Sun Can Influence a “Sunnier Disposition” One study found people with the lowest levels of vitamin D were 11 times more prone to be depressed than those who received healthy doses. I strongly recommend optimizing your vitamin D levels, by sunlight and taking a high-quality vitamin D supplement, to your list of depression fighters. Ask your healthcare practitioner to check your blood level to make sure you are not toxic as vitamin D3 is a fat soluble vitamin. An ideal level is 60

Every Decade is Different

teeped in history and tradition, the ancient art of brewing tea blossoms in the heart of our community. You won’t find any tea balls at the Stacie Robertson’s tea shop. “That’s because a tea ball tortures the tea leaves. There must be enough room for each leaf to unfold and become infused in order to release flavor," she explains.

This is but one nugget espoused by Robertson, tea aficionado and owner of the Tea Market in Kansas City’s Crestwood Shops.

As passionate as she is about the many aspects of tea, walk into her shop and it’s hard not to ogle over the sheer volume of 90 whole leaf loose teas properly stored in ceramic canisters. Look beyond the tea to find an array of accoutrements that will dazzle the novice or ‘Teavangelist’ (as Robertson calls her loyal tribe).

“You’ve got to have the right tools as well as the right ingredients. I don’t sell cute, dustables, I sell functional tea equipment from pots and kettles to books, mugs, cups, and infusers,” says Robertson.

The tea shop of her dreams didn’t happen overnight, however.

“When I opened the shop in 2002 the Kansas City area was a wasteland for the tea drinker. The only availability was a smattering of 4-ounce tins you couldn’t even open to smell,” she says.

That’s when Robertson’s idea of opening a tea shop started to bubble. She poured her entrepreneurial spirit and patience into learning the intricacies of brewing.

After years of reading books, attending seminars, participating in workshops and Professional Series classes Robertson received her Certified Tea Specialist designation from the Specialty Tea Institute in Connecticut.

She caught the curve as the popularity of tea exploded on the cultural scene.

“According to the Tea Association of the U.S.A. Inc. the millennials are propelling the tea market. Within the 18-35 year old demographic, tea is trending upward. This age group wants to experience more than coffee,” says Robertson.

Today, Robertson proudly boasts an expert staff trained to help the un-initiated discover a customized blend right down to the gram.

She admits, “We are all about fussing over a perfectly brewed, artisan cup of tea for our customers. Taking a cue from coffee shops that routinely hand-finish a cup of coffee; we’ve opened a Tea Bar in

the shop complete with a reverse osmosis water filtration system. Now anyone can stop in and have a cup of tea to go.”

Beyond her retail shop, other culinarians in the area are taking notice.

Robertson’s signature blends are featured at Dolce Bakery, Woodside Racquet Club and Aixois.

Tackling the learning curve Her classroom is the downstairs level of her shop. Here Robertson provides a series of classes to customers who want to learn more about the history and complexities of tea. “It’s not just dumping tea into a pot of boiling water. Coaxing the most out of the leaves to change water into an aromatic brew comes down to an experience,” she says.

Robertson adds, “I want people to know the Tea Market is a retail shop with the heart of a teacher. I teach various classes from Matcha, (The Mother of All Green Tea) to the Fundamentals of Tea. Every quarter, I host an Afternoon Tea pairing five teas with scones, sandwiches, soup, tart, and dessert.”

And she’s happy with the uptick in customers wanting to know the difference among the various varieties including: white, black, green, oolong, and herbal infusions.

Every once in a while there’s an amusing stickler. “A good customer brought in three friends. Everyone was in high spirits but I wasn’t able to win them over until...exasperated, my customer said to her friends, ‘I don’t get it–you can’t drink vodka all day!’ Admittedly, this was a teachable moment.”

Using Astrology to Manifest What You Want

T

here are many tools available to help people use the law of attraction to manifest what they want in their lives. Some of the more common ways are meditation, mantras, and immersion. Beyond the Law of Attraction

I

t is safe to say that most of us would always welcome more positive experiences, events, and people into our life. By now, most people have heard of using the Law of Attraction to improve their lives, but what’s beyond the Law of Attraction? Let’s take this simple but sometimes elusive principle a step further and discover the Law of Receiving.

In order to be able to receive what we are attracting we first need to know a few important steps. There are three important steps in the Law of Receiving: they are comprised of instinct, removing obstacles, and trust. The first step is to be connected to your instincts. In order to get any break in our day we are increasingly trying to set healthy boundaries with people and technology devices. On an average day we are overly consumed with “doing” tasks, leaving little time to tune into our feelings. I am not talking about all of our emotional feelings, but rather instinctual feelings.

Instinct relies on a gut perception, an innate survival skill that all of us were born with.

The Hindu deity Ganesha is a master at the second step in the law of receiving: removing obstacles. To completely remove an obstacle requires the mental, physical, and spiritual release. I would say that we are masters, like Ganesha, on the mental level, but need some guidance when it comes to the latter two. As a holistic abdominal health practitioner my job is often to take a patient from the mental obstacle and connect them to the physical obstruction in the their body.

Surprisingly, it only takes a few minutes to create this awareness in a patient, or for yourself at home. Start in a reclined position or lying on your back with a bolster under your knees. Take both hands and let your finger tips touch, then turn hands inward toward your abdomen. Inhale completely in the abdomen and on the exhale push downward in your abdomen until you meet resistance. Do this four to six times in different areas of the belly. Notice that you can go deeper in some areas, but there may be almost no movement in other areas. In addition, the places that have no movement often feel a physical discomfort associated with them. You may say this is just the way my abdomen has felt for years, so it is normal for me, but at what cost to receiving abundance in your life?

Ganesha knew that if we stored obstacles internally we would not have the space left to receive the harmonies in life we so desire. This part is vital to take full advantage to the Law of Attraction. Yes, a baby-soft tummy is possible at any age.

People are always amazed after an abdominal session; they can palpate anywhere in their abdomen with a deeper and even softer feel. In this clearing process the mental was known, the physical was discovered, the spiritual was released, and the patient’s clarity was restored.

truths. Thus, what your are attracting in your life is also unclear. Clarity comes from a deep connection within our core, our soul, and our spirit. This deep connection is where our true essence and natural instincts are. So, what happened to us, and how do we recover our natural instincts?

Let’s use the example of a young child.

Observe a young child’s behavior, they can easily discern between a person with positive or negative energy. This is often done with no verbalization, only instinct.

Physically their body is very flexible, the abdomen is soft as a feather pillow and their head is not full of future or past events. Children are living in the moment, and because of their physical fluidity, information about people and the environment is received in their sensory preceptors and decisions are made.

With every aging year our bodies seem to become less flexible. Rigidity has taken over and abdominal breathing is almost nonexistent. As children we began to listen to the adults around us, we hear their fears that become our fears. We hear their anger, that becomes our anger. We hear their sadness, that becomes our sadness, and so on with other emotions.

The trouble is we don’t just hear these messages from adults on a mental level, we feel them, and our body usually traps them inside our gut. When we become an adult we are left with many negative feelings inside us that have a direct affect on our true instincts, thus limiting our ability to attract and receive what we desire.

Most of us can remember that last time we went to an event with family or friends and left with mixed feelings. Our energy felt good, but drained at the same time. If we had a clear unobstructed path to our “instinctual feelings,” I guarantee we would have left with an abundance of good energy. Our internal navigation system would be able to detect any negative energy from a mile away. When internal obstacles have been removed from our mental, physical, and spiritual self, we complete the final and third step in the Law of Receiving—trust. The Wormhole Experience

H

ere’s the thing: If you are reading this article, you are likely someone who is an explorer, open to new ideas, the infinite nature of our existence, and you are seeking a more profound spiritual connection. As spiritual explorers, we often become fascinated with the various spiritual tools available to us. We learn about and interact with crystals, spirit guides, angels, herbs, pendulums, tarot cards, meditative music…the list goes on.

Perhaps you utilize these tools in environments that are in juxtaposition to exploration and then witness the energetic shift. In our journey today however, we will go a level deeper than these tools, as wonderful and fun and interesting as they may be.

As an explorer, you weave your way through a tremendous amount of energy each day. Here on this planet, we physically experience gravity, density and the energy of the elements. And that is life. That is earthly existence, neutral in its nature, yet powerful in its forces.

Today’s journey is about being in energetic alignment with our self, and navigating earthly forces and experiences from this place of strength and truth. So let’s begin by peering through the wormhole—the bridge between spacetime that connects you to your Divine and the energy of alignment.

Foremost, one indicator of misalignment is when we can use words to describe our situation, and it is

typically words like frustrated, stressed, stuck, and drained. Such words and the related feelings are the indicators of misalignment. There is no doubt that in our current collective consciousness the state of misalignment is more readily apparent, but is it really more prevalent? I invite you to personally challenge this notion in your consciousness. Step aside from what mainstream society and media is pointing toward and tune into your inner compass. You are a brilliant individual in an amazing collective of beings on an incredibly diverse blue orb in the middle of an expansive universe beyond your imagination. How dare you think you cannot shift into energetic alignment! So, let’s leave misalignment behind, for it will collapse our energetic wormholes.

Energetic alignment occurs when we not only realize our divine connection, but we experience it. The energy of empowerment and truth arise as we match the frequency of our true nature.

We sense love, bliss and oneness simultaneously and to such a degree that it is difficult if not impossible to explain the experience in words. How very interesting that most native songs do not translate into the English language, because words fall short of the experience!

Immersing in nature supports our alignment because it reminds us of life, resets us in the understanding of cycles, and connects us with the spirit of

exploration. But as you step outside, you are not simply getting fresh air, feeling the sun on your skin, or watching the bird fly.

You are the air, the sun, and the bird.

Music triggers our imagination, ignites our creativity, and transforms us. But, you are not just listening to a song, singing a song, or dancing to the song. You are the melody, the rhythm, the song itself. This is not just movement; this is a dance, a flow. And it is not outside of you, it is you. You are the movement, the dance and the flow. You are the experience.

Let’s consider yet another angle of being in energetic alignment. If you call to an angel or spirit guide and ask for support, protection, or confidence, you are calling forth energetic alignment. A true “angel” or “guide,” another unique expression of the universe, will hold that space for you until you realize there is no separation between you and them.

There are no words to describe them, no names, and no characteristics. You become the angel. You become the guide, and they become you. The beings that are truly connected to the energy of alignment, which connects you to source, hold space for you to be the energy of support, protection, or confidence. In this way, you know yourself as supported and supportive, protected and protective, confident for yourself and others. This is inner peace.

So the idea here, the wormhole experience if you will, is that whatever spiritual tool you are utilizing or experiencing, you become the living realization of it. It is not something outside of you, rather part of your true energetic alignment.

And if any tool or being is not in complimentary energetic frequency with you, it becomes no longer needed, no longer consulted, yet a glorious and valuable partner (albeit short-term) on your journey. That’s another really cool thing about energetic alignment: Releasing

what isn’t a match becomes effortless as you are more and more in alignment— another indicator!

Practically speaking, how does one step into the wormhole of alignment and trust it not to collapse? How does one come into energetic alignment with oneself and maintain that space-time connection? Consider yourself the creator.

Alignment strengthens the wormhole, misalignment collapses it. The wormhole is a vast tunnel of energy just waiting for you to dance through it, with it. Consider your favorite spiritual tool, close your eyes, and imagine that you are it. Become one with it, become it. Describe it with words until words fall short. Be sure to give yourself whatever space and time is needed with this energy. This is the energy that strengthens your wormhole and propels you on a luscious adventure through spacetime. It is valuable to strengthen your familiarity to it. Next, repeat with another tool, another angel or guide, and so on.

What’s happening here!? Everyone is creating and existing in a place of energetic alignment. Individuals are shifting. The collective consciousness is shifting. The earth is shifting. Space-time is becoming one as each wormhole explodes with the energy of alignment to source. Words…they no longer…describe.

I frequently test homes and businesses of people who are sick and/ or don't feel well and find the electricity has a negative effect on their bodies.

Have you ever heard of “Schumann Resonances,” or “Earthing?” The earth has natural frequencies that help rebalance your body, reduce inflammation and help neutralize the negative effects of dirty electricity (www.earthing.com). Negative emotions also have a devastating effect on the body. The emotions are stored as a program in your subconscious and also your cellular matrix (fascia system). Further, each organ (i.e., liver, kidney, gallbladder) has an invisible energetic pathway called the meridian associated with it. If you have long-standing negative emotion, it can affect the performance of the specific organ. For instance, the liver is associated with anger and rage. If you have

experienced a lot of anger you can create an imbalance in the liver meridian, which weakens specific muscles corresponding to the meridian.

The liver is most energetically active between the hours of 1-3 a.m., and you will likely have sleeping issues during this time until you rebalance the liver. Fear affects the kidneys and can set you up for a lifetime of lower back issues because the kidney meridian controls the primary stabilizing muscles of the pelvis, which are the psoas and illiacus. If a client comes in with a chronic lower back issue, the kidney meridian and corresponding muscles are usually what I address first.
