A GIRLY GIRL

What type of girl are you? Are you a girly girl? Yes definitely, I’m the girl that was a cheerleader, wore heels everyday since High School and a purse with my uniform. (Laughs) How often do you have quality time with your girlfriends? And what do you do? I work a lot so as often as possible, I love dying laughing with the girls and being super silly.

yandy smith

In your circle of friends, are you the party girl or the homebody? I would say the optimist one. The encourager. I think all bad things come to an end and all bad things past. I always help my friends to look at the glass as half full and to appreciate how green their grass is in their own yards. Who is your female role model and why? Oprah and Mona Scott Young (one I don’t know and one I know well) both of these women tell the rag to riches story with a little twist. They hustled hard with an impeccable grind. Neither was born into money or married rich, they took their situations, and didn’t settle for status quo. In their respective fields, they’ve surpassed expectations, created their own rules and turned back to grab a sister on the way. Do you think women can have it all, the family, career, and amazing social life? How do you find balance in your life? Yes we can have it all. We just have to find that perfect balance and keep a great team. As far as my team, I keep friends more social than me, a man that supports me, and assistants smarter than me.

EGL Girl of the Month and Everything She Loves

Whose your style icon and why? Kelis. She defines her own style, breaks all fashion rules, and creates looks that are uniquely hers making her a trend setter rather than a trend follower. There are so many times in life when you have to “play it safe” fashion should not be one of them. What’s your fashion staple? Items you cannot live with out? A staple item I can’t live with out is my EGL jewelry. Whether I’m headed to the gym, taking a business meeting, or hustling backstage at a show. My EGL accessories allow me to express my individuality. Single, committed, or looking?

EGL girl Yandy Smith talks career, girlfriends, and style inspirations.

All three. Single in my fight, committed to my dreams and looking towards my future. Did I answer that right? (Laughs) What are the must have qualities for a mate? What’s negotiable and what’s an absolute must? Negotiable-Just love me, encourage me and be my biggest supporter. I’m not that picky. What are your goals for 2012? To exceed my goals set for 2012. An EGL girl is... Ambitious, educated, phenomenal, extra-ordinary and definitely #BOSSY!!!

Home Elegance When it comes to decorating your home, use your personal style. You can add luster on a budget, and maximize the impact by repeating or grouping elements. Instead of one huge centerpiece, add a festive yet practical touch to your table by bringing outdoor pieces indoors. Use several glass containers, tall, medium and short, and fill them with flowers, fruits, nuts, shells, floating candles, stones or anything else that will complement the other decorative elements you have in mind. Don’t be afraid to mix and match your favorite glassware and china patterns for a look that’s all your own. The trick is pulling the components together in a way that displays your taste. To expand your entertaining space, clear a side table or drag in a desk from another room to create a dessert station or cocktail bar. Moving the party out of your dining room or eating area is a great way to liven up your gathering.

handle an almost infinite number of variations. Topped with a savory sauce, sweet and sour meatballs can be made ahead of time and frozen. Just before your party, defrost the meatballs, add sauce and reheat. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/the-best-sweet-and-sourmeatballs/detail.aspx

Cheese Platters Preparing cheese platters requires no cooking and can be ready at the table when your guests arrive. Create variety by serving 3-6 different types of cheeses paired with thinly sliced French bread, crackers and fruit to make a stunning spread.

Acorn Muffins/Cornbread Mini muffins shaped like acorns are a festive touch for an autumn meal. The key ingredient to this recipe is the Acorn Cakelet Pan—which can be found on Amazon for under $30. The pan can be used with any recipe you might ordinarily use to make muffins or cornbread, for a warm treat. http://johannainman.blogspot.com/2009/10/recipe-boxacorn-muffins.html

“ so lets take care of ourselfs from the inside out”

Beware Don’t Underestimate the

Importance of Sunscreen Written by Kandes Ross, Aesthetician and Wellness Coach

Ladies, sunscreen is not only for use in the summer, or when we’re relaxing on a beautiful beach somewhere. It is important to protect your skin from the sun all year long! Since eighty percent of the sun’s rays pass through clouds on even the cloudiest of days, experts advise wearing sunscreen daily. But, don’t worry EGL compiled some helpful tips and facts you should know when using sunscreen to protect your skin.

Dangerous Sun Rays According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the sun’s ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays have the greatest impact on our skin. UVA rays (think A for aging) are known for causing premature aging. These rays are also strong enough to pass through window glass, penetrate to the deepest layer of the skin, and suppress your immunity; therefore making it easier for skin cancer to spread. UVB rays (think B for burning) are responsible for painful sunburn. However, overexposure to both rays can lead to cell death, tissue damage, and ultimately skin cancer.

Take Precaution Sunscreen has the ability to prevent skin damage, so don’t wait until you see the signs of aging and deterioration. We’re not saying to run from the sun, but during peak hours (usually between 10am to 3pm) experts recommend avoiding sun exposure if possible. During this time of day the sun is the strongest. It also helps to keep a stylish pair of shades on to protect your eyes and eye area.

Choosing the Right One There are a variety of products available for sun protection, but a product with an SPF of at least 30 is recommended. It’s equally as important to select a product according to your skin type (oily, dry, combination, sensitive, etc.)

Sunscreen & Makeup It’s also possible to protect your skin while wearing the season’s hottest shades of makeup. SPF can be found in most cosmetics today. It’s okay to use both a moisturizer with SPF and then a foundation with SPF over the moisturizer. You also want to choose a product that provides full or broad-spectrum (UVA & UVB) coverage.

Applying Sunscreen The most effective way to protect the skin is to apply a nickel-sized amount to your face, a dime-sized amount to your chest, and a quarter-sized amount to your neck area. You will want to make sure you apply this at least 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors. Incorporate sunscreen into your daily skincare regimen today! No matter what ethnicity you are, sunscreen is a must because the sun does not discriminate.

DATING MATING

Treat Your Relationships Like Your Biggest Investment!

Written by Elle Elmes

“I’m just sayin you could do better, tell me have you heard that lately…” As I sit and listen to the chorus on Drake’s Marvin’s Room, it made me think of a quote I come across often, “When you settle for less, you get even less than you settled for.” So why is it more often than NOT, we settle for less than the best when it comes to choosing our mate? We refuse to settle for a mediocre hairstylist, manicurist/pedicurist, etc. But, when choosing a mate, we cut corners, dumb down our list and make excuse after excuse when considering this person to be a part of our lives.

There is one specific reason we won’t settle when it comes to the things I named above… time! We work hard for our money and we’ll be damned if we allow anyone to shortchange us. Nothing is more valuable in life than time. It is priceless, non refundable, and cannot be exchanged. It does not grow back and cannot be re stocked. So, the next time you look at your mate or if you’re in the process of choosing a mate, ask yourself if this person is worth your most valuable prized possession, Time! If the answer is not an absolute yes, then close that door and move on to the next immediately. Too many women spend months, years, and decades on men and relationships that are simply a waste of time. So I ask, why do women settle in relationships? Is it because options are so limited that we settle for what’s available rather than wait for Mr. Right? That could be, but more than likely women settle for any one of the following reasons: • He’s not perfect but I can fix him. Now don’t get me wrong, nobody’s perfect! However there is a difference between settling and compromising. Compromise is necessary for success in any relationship, but settling is not. You can compromise and learn to love someone that snores, but settling for a guy that doesn’t treat you right is dangerous. Some women see troubled men as a challenge, they convince themselves that if they do everything right, Mr. Wrong will somehow become Mr. Right. Wrong! Men are not children, nor are they pets, it’s not our job to raise them or train them. We shouldn’t have to teach them courtesy or chivalry. Regardless of how hard you try or how much you love them, you can’t change them. In the end, you will end up with years of stress and wasted time. • Fear of Being Alone Being alone for some people is like a death sentence. Some women rather endure the physical and mental pain of an abusive relationship than be alone. Learn to love and be friends with yourself. Read a book or spend time with friends and family. Do any number of things, but don’t waste your time on someone that clearly thinks you’re worthless. Get rid of that insecure way of thinking that tells you someone is better than no one. Choose quality over quantity and learn to enjoy your alone time until you find someone worth sharing it with. • Bad boys are no good and good boys are no fun. If there is one thing I learned in life is that there’s always an exception to the rule. If you’re looking for a good guy with some bad boy swag, trust me he’s out there. He’s also caring, trustworthy, and loyal. He’ll appreciate you and treat you the way a man should treat the woman in his life, with respect. Most importantly of all, he’ll prove himself worthy of your time. Moral of the story is, treat your relationships like your biggest investment. It is one of the most important decisions you will make and will affect every aspect of your life. So ladies, let’s stop settling for less! EGL girls deserve better!

THE FACTS

Who Keeps the Ring? Written by Kalyca Lee-Johnson Esquire

We have all seen it play out in the media over the past few weeks… Kim Kardashian files for divorce from Kris Humphries after only 72 days of marriage! In the unfortunate event that divorce is discussed, the question of who gets the ring is often asked. Most states evaluate an engagement ring as a gift conditioned on entering into marriage. In order to be considered a gift, there are three prerequisites that must be met

1: The giver’s intent to give the item as a gift. 2: The giver’s actual giving of the gift to the receiver 3: The receiver’s acceptance of the gift.

If an engagement is broken most courts take a stance that the ring was a gift that was conditioned on the expectation of marriage. If the marriage did not occur, then the giver is entitled to get the ring back. But, that statement isn’t true in all cases. California State adopts a slightly different approach; once it’s determined who is responsible for breaking the engagement off, the state can determine who ultimately is entitled to keep the ring. If the giver ends the engagement then the receiver is entitled to the ring and vice versa. According to law, Kim is entitled to keep the ring, because the 20.5 carat sparkler was a gift conditioned on marriage, and the marriage did in fact take place. It would be interesting to see how this situation would play out if it were to make it to court in California. Would a judge apply the Californian law regarding engagement rings and look to see who is at fault? Based on that standard, Kris would get the ring back because Kim initiated the divorce filing. However, despite the fact that the marriage did occur, it seems that proper etiquette would be to return the ring to Kris because the marriage was so short lived. Apparently, putting a ring on it doesn’t always guarantee marriage or happily ever after. An EGL girl needs to know her facts if ever placed in a situation like this.

Ladies, what would you do? Would you give back the ring?

Update Your Wardrobe With This Season’s Must Have Trends

Leather

EGL girls love fall! Whether your style is dramatic or demure, the fall tends to bring out the fashionista in everyone. Here we have the 4 hottest trends of the season, use them as inspiration to modernize your fall wardrobe.

• Fur Christian Louboutin Splash Fur Sling back Alexander McQueen Fox Fur Trimmed Vest

Fringe

Fur is definitely big this fall. It was reintroduced in a major way last fall and this trend has returned with a vengeance. This trend can be worn as an accent such as on a shoe, or as a focal fur piece such as a vest or jacket. And for the girl after my own heart, you will go all the the way with neon fur pieces!!

Zadig & Voltaire Tatouc Deluxe leather shirt Gucci Leather-Collard Wool-crepe dress Preen Line Simone Pleated leather skirt

• Fringe

I must say this has to be one of my favorite trends. All the designers have gotten the memo so there is literally something for everyone. My only advice is not to go overboard and end up looking like a costume

• Leather

This trend might seem like a no brainer because everyone owns something leather. Leather was all over the Autumn/Winter 2011 runways in many variations. To be on trend with the leather look, try styles other than just the traditional leather jacket.

• Metallic

Metallics are a wonderful way of transforming classic looks into an updated fashion contender. This is another trend where there is something for everyone: from the cautious to the daring. Again, just be careful not to go overboard and end up looking like the Tin Man.

Nails

Playful jewel tone nails are the way to go this fall. Say bye-bye to a basic manicure. Try topping your tips with prints, designs, multiple colors and lots of glitter!

Prints

Nail adhesives are easy to use and wear longer than a traditional manicure. • Start with clean nails • Choose nail shape that fits the size of your nail • Place nail sticker (start from base), and smooth across nail • File or clip to appropriate length • Finish with Top Coat

Designs

Use decorative nail stickers or nail pens and appliqués to create your own unique look! Check out your local Sephora stores. They offer a variety of nail embellishments and adhesives to choose from.

Multiple Colors

Choose a variety of nail shades in the same family, and paint nails in desired color combinations. Paint nails one shade and choose an accent color to make your pinky (or any other nail) POP!

Glitter

It’s back ladies! The nail polish staple you may have thought inappropriate after the age of 13 has made a comeback! Layer your nails with multiple shades or different glitter sizes or textures to get a look that is totally eye catching. Try the latest nail color created by Nicki Minaj for OPI. The rapper teamed up with the popular brand to create a line of girly polish complete with glitter for their latest OPI Nail Lacquer Collection.

Metallic

Metallic shades are shown in full force on the eye, lip and nails. Choose from highly reflective statement making textures in traditional metallic shades such as gold, bronze and silver; or spice things up with a colored metallic! Metallic shadows can be subtle or bold in impact, depending on the tool used. For a soft wash look, go for a fluffy brush. For something a bit bolder, choose a small densely bristled brush and pat the shadow on the eye. Remember: This look has to be completed with eyeliner, and lots of mascara! Think disco glam! Chanel’s fall 2011 line offers plenty of hot metallic shades to choose from. Go for the glam, just be careful to not overdo it…focus on one facial feature to successfully pull off this look.

Hair

Whether you rock a short do, natural, weave or relaxer, the key for always-fabulous hair is a healthy shine. Take care to invest and utilize leave in conditioners and hydrating product to maintain the integrity of your hair. This is especially important if you opt to rev your look with an eye catching hair color. Any shade is cool! Make sure you feel confident in the color and rock it with pride! Some key hairstyles for fall include ponytails, braids, curls, bangs and hair accessories! Low maintenance or high maintenance…choose from a variety of looks that complement your personal style.
